Please I need advise..Dog/Dad trouble?

...

Please I need help. My Japanese Spitz of 4 years is in huge trouble. We just moved from a condo to a house and my parents said that they don;t want the dog in the house so we have to keep her outside. the problem is that she has always lived in the house sense she was little and well lately she's been really aggresive and i know its because shes angry with us. Earlier today she got in the house and my dad got mad, yelled at her and she growled and snapped at my father. he got mad and kicked her and after went and beat her with a plastic crate..its not the first time he's don't it either. My dog is aggresive went harmed so she gets mad when they hurt her and everytimes my dad hurts her she gets mad and turns back onto him which angers my father more. Untill now shes never been this aggreisive and its more with my dad.

How can I make him understand that not shes hurting because we are leaving her outside when she has lived inside all her live. I've tryed talking to him and telling him hes abusing my dog but he yells at me and says she has to learn. I;ve told him yelling at her and hurting her won't do anything positive, but negative. He told me that is she growls or attempts to bite him again that she will let her go on the streets or take her to a dog pound. I really need some advise on what to do, how can I avoid my dog being taken from me and how to make my dad understand.

Answer
I'm so sorry to have to tell you this, but you need to rehome your dog, immediately. I know that is probably the last thing you want to do, but let me be very clear - if you do not, your dog WILL be taken away and presumed aggressive and un-rehomeable. Your Father will not listen to you and I know how frustrated and sad you must be. But your Father is going to seriously damage your dog permanently, and your dog will eventually really hurt him and I dont really blame the dog.

Please, look inside your heart and find that poor dog a new home. You seem like a good person and I know this must be hard but this has to stop, immediately. Find a home where someone knows your dog's history and is able to deal with an aggressive dog - don't go to the humane society, as they may put her to sleep. Look for a home, post ads on Kijiji, anyone who is able to really give this dog special attention and rehabilitate her. I wish you all the luck in the world, and if you need any more help or advice, e-mail me at Carolyn_555@hotmail.com. I am a dog trainer and can help you in this process if you need me to.

Receiving a dog overseas - is this suspicious?

My gut is telling me this is odd. A woman answered my craigslist ad for a GSD saying she has a four month old with all papers, AKC certified, that she can't keep because the country she is in will not allow the dog. She said she has two weeks to send her back. She wants me to send the airport $125 for a new travel crate and asked basic questions, if I'm a breeder, have kids. She then asked for my name, number, address, and my nearest airport.

I'm not sure what to do. She doesn't want any direct money for the actual dog, but it seems odd. Thoughts?

Answer
Definitely a scam. One of those ancient copy-and-paste ones that are almost identical every time they're sent out. I've personally received three - one for a siberian husky, one for a german shepherd, and one for a shih-tzu. (Keeping in mind that I've only ever posted on Kijiji looking for a GSD)

It's a really pathetic ruse that gets really old really fast. What I noticed in all three of the e-mails I received was that the text was colored, and the woman kept using "dear" in almost every sentence. Example being;

"so you really want this puppy, ok dear?"

If you think it might be a scam, just walk away. Have you ever heard of an entire country banning a single breed of dog?

Where can I get a replacement tray for my dog's crate?

gaminmeg

My dog destroyed the plastic tray in her crate due to severe separation anxiety. Does anyone know a good place online where I can order another one?

Answer
Depending what brand it is, go on-line an google the manufacturer - they all sell parts for their crates.

If it's a smaller crate, as a last resort, take measurements and you may be able to find the right size metal sheet pan with edges at a restaurant supply outlet. Don't laugh, they work but it depends on the size of the crate. Whole and half sheet pans.

Calling All Dog Breeders or Vets?

Our basset hound puppies are 5 weeks old today. They will be going to their new homes in about 3 weeks. My question is this. How much socialization should they be getting? I want them to be very well socialized before they go to their new homes. Here is a picture of where they are sleeping and playing.

It's a six sided gate, with a big sheet of linoleum under it. I have newspaper on one side and a blanket on the other side. It's working out really well, because they are learning to use the paper to potty. And of course, they have lots of stuffed animals and other toys to play with.

My children, husband and I go in the bedroom with them constantly throughout the day and usually pick one or two of them up for snuggle time. Also, I let them out of the gate for about an hour each day and I sit on the floor and play with them. Their mom still nurses them about 3 times a day. Do you think they are getting enough in terms of being socialized?
Thanks

Can dogs feel guilty for something they have done bad?

Ashley

some say no but it seems like they can sometimes

Answer
No, some people think the dog is displaying quilt if they slink away or crouch down. They are responding to your body language and voice. If your dog has done something wrong chances are you are standing very angrily and your voice is loud.

Many times owners will come home to something damaged and starting their war dance. The dog is responding to your behavior and if this happens every time you come home then the dog will not look forward to you coming home and will try to get away.

In the above instance it would be a good idea to put the dog in a crate while your gone or confined to a small area. That way you won't be mad when you come home.

concussion likely or not? -sort of long details of the past days?

Brandon

thursday-
was biking downtown to see if I could find any friends. thought I could cross the street fast enough to beat the red light. It was the car's turn to go, got hit, fell down, arm caught on bike seat, went level with the ground, hit the cement but no pain in my head, got up, went to the side of the road with bike, knees were scratched up, giddy and high on adrenaline, felt fine, knees stung a bit. While standing at one point vision went white and slight ringing in my right ear. Was a bit off balance. Thought it was from the adrenaline. A tad trouble remembering details of home information but not much more than usual.
-went to a friends', sat on their couch with ice packs, they didn't think I had a concussion because I could remember everything. I had slurring of words and poor phrasing, tad trouble figuring out what to do for cutting vegetables, clear the food on the other, or use the table. Finally asked for another cutting board.
-thought I hadn't seen their dog between puppy age and grown, then realized that was wrong. I had seen the dog a few times between.
-We had dinner, started getting a light head ache, it moved to the front of my head (frontal lobe), before was in the back, kept returning to couch because of dizziness but didn't say anything except for asking for a pain killer. started worrying about going to sleep. Head felt a tad bit sore.
-Got a ride home, took two more pain killers, head ache finally went away, went to go to bed, felt sick, head ache returned a tad, slept ok- a bit light

Friday:
-woke up, another sick wave and urge to puke, spent the day relaxing with ice
packs, had trouble cracking eggs well and sort of ate egg shells, lol. Had ice cream for dinner. when trying to eat I felt sick with some head ache, went to bed, felt sick and head ache.
-off balance going down the dark hallway and didn't realize it until I got to the door when I was leaning heavily towards the second door.

Saturday:
-went to the saturday market thinking i'd be fine. Didn't recognize someone's face- they looked like a stranger but I knew I knew them. I almost never forget faces) I knew them by my name being called out (their voice mostly, that's how I knew where I knew them from without really thinking about it).
-Hung out with a friend but kept getting dizzy, light headed and feeling more sick the more I walked. The friend finally got me to call my dad. I left a message saying I was feeling sick and light headed or had a head ache (not sure anymore). But I didn't want to go home because I was functioning almost fully. If I hadn't gotten sick or light headed or the friend pressuring me to call family, I wouldn't have bothered at all and kept going like nothing was wrong.
-Food scents were making me feel sick and hungry at the same time. Noise made me feel queasy as well. Kept having to stop and lay down in the grass. Several times I felt like I was going to pass out due to light headedness, feeling sick or trying to breath deeply and calmly. Head felt sore at times.
-rested enough to attend a dance. Some sick feelings, rested a bit though.

Sunday: seemed fine, went home after eating some but got full easy and didn't want to upset my stomach by eating too much.
-since thursday almost constantly asking things over and over again to double check because my head was foggy on details of plans or not understanding what people are asking for. Phrasing things strangely and mixing up words. Asking easy to answer questions as clarifications to details of plans to make sure I have it right and then getting confused.
-constantly forgetting I asked things already.
-couldn't remember what i'd eaten before heading out thursday, took 5-10 minutes to remember faintly i'd made the pizza i'd been staring at while trying to figure it out. Even now I get confused on when I ate the pizza. Sometime between wednesday and friday.
Head felt sore at times.
-dad talked to me, thinks i'm a hypocondriac and saying things for attention. doesn't take me seriously because i say i'm worried but am "running around normally".

Today: Monday: seem fine. Still forgetting thins that were said earlier. Friends keep telling me I already said that and I have no memories of saying it. still getting light head aches.
-got tired at 9:59pm. O_O I'm never tired this early.
the part of my head that hit the ground was the back left side on the upper corner area. the part that keeps getting these light head aches is the frontal lobe and above the eyes. some pressure in the nose area as if it were sinuses but i don't think they are.
family won't take me to see a doctor due to money concerns and they think i'm a hypocondriac.. -_- its so stupid.
thanks metomn, that was very helpful information and i did wear a helmet that day. :)

Answer
You likely have a mild-moderate concussion- type 2 would be my guess. It sounds as though your brain, when you fell, struck the front portion of your skull which is why the majority of your pain is now centered toward the front despite hitting the back, left quadrant against the ground. It may also be possible that when you were in your accident, your brain hit your skull hard enough to cause a leak in brain fluid. A decrease in fluid around the brain would also explain/lend to why you're getting dizzier when you stand as well as why you're having increased nausea. To maintain food intake while minimizing nausea, try eating the B.R.A.T. diet (bananas, plain rice, applesauce, toast) for the next 2-3 days. While it might not fill you up as much, it will provide you with much needed nutrients while calming your stomach. You'll want to avoid loud noises, bright/flashing lights, and further injury to your head and neck for about a week until the symptoms begin to dissipate. Maintain the recommended dosage of an over the counter prescription pain killer such as ibuprofen/motrin or aspirin. Try not to take too much Tylenol if that's all you have as that will often upset your stomach more and potentially cause other issues. Keep up on your fluid intake by drinking lots of water but in slow, steady sips. If you don't begin to feel better or your symptoms don't improve within 5-7 days, it would be a good idea to seek medical attention. If you don't have a doctor or money is tight, you can always go to the ER and talk to a case manager or someone in billing who should be able to either set up a payment plan or use a donation-funded account to cover some or all of your costs. If you were in a crosswalk when you got hit, had police involved, and you got the person's insurance info, it might be a good idea to be seeking medical care through their insurance as part of an accident claim. Most importantly, this is why it's so crucial to wear a helmet. Granted, your supposed adrenaline rush aided in protecting you from more harm, but nothing protects better than a good helmet....even if they don't always look so "cool." Good luck to you!

I have been talking to a dog behaviour specialist. we had an appointment to start training him. but he just bit a family member for no reason and i cant keep him. the kid and him were playing all day.. it was late at night, the boy walked by food on the stove and the dog lunged at him out of no where. both bites were in the face, both bites seemed out of no where, and both children had to get stitches. i would never give the dog away and not tell the person who i was giving him to about his history. both incidents are recorded. i dont understand why he is this way with children. he was raised in my home with my children since week 7 of his life.

Answer
If your boy has bitten, twice, you can't simply rehome him, put him out there with another unsuspecting owner. So obviously you are going to have to make any prospective owner aware. And that's going to make it extremely difficult to find him another home. Where this dog is now depends on the circumstances surrounding these two bites. What were the kids doing with this puppy that caused him to bite. 'He doesn't like kids'......... I'd suggest this isn't normal, in itself. And if this is the case then there is every possibility his 'not liking' isn't going to stop at kids. In which case, worst possible, he's going to be best pts.

However, I don't see this is the answer here. First of all, get back to his breeder. Good breeders will always want to be involved in any rehoming and usually have a return clause in the sale Contract. It may not be possible for her to physically take him back if she has males in her kennel set-up already, but she should at least, be willing to help you find him a suitable home - and ASSESS him first.

If his breeder isn't interested, then contact Breed Rescue. They may well have experienced people on their waiting list who might be willing to take on this boy in the hope of rehabilitating him. And on that score, I'd get a trainer in to assess him - assuming his breeder is out of the picture. To find a Dane Rescue, contact the Breed Club, and ask.

How much does it cost to take care of a dog?

Valerie

My brothers friend's dad found a dog that was left at his work and they cannot find the owner, so my mom said we could maybe keep it. she just wants to know how much the crate will cost and all of the accessories, plus the trips to the vet. please tell me the prices of the things listed below if you know! thx in advance!
Food?
Crate?
Vet trips?
Toys?
Clothes?

Answer
Food: I double checked this on the walmart website and a medium size 8kg bag of of regular food (Dog Chow, Beneful) costs around $20.00. Dogs really only need fed twice a day and if you avoid overfeeding (follow directions from the bag or ask your vet) you shouldn't be over spending on food. Shop around, different stores can have different prices or sales. My large dog probably goes through a large bag at least once a month but she is a puppy (technically doesn't look like it though) so she gets fed more/ Our medium sized dog (cocker spaniel) takes around a month to work through a medium bag if that helps.

Crate: Dog crates can be upwards from $50 (again wal-mart) but its not a necessary thing right away so you can take your time trying to find used ones for cheaper. My dogs don't have crates, instead they each have an old comforter (the spaniel destroyed his last bed when he got mad at us so no more expensiive bedding in our house) and they both like to lay in their corner or wherever the blanket is at that moment. A dog should have something soft (and their's, not your mom's favorite rug) to lie on available most of the time, especially if you don't want them on the couch.

Vet bills: I don't know where you live but I can give you the prices from my clinic, however keep in mind that this one is rural are government subsidized so a city price can be several times as much depending on where you go.

Because its a stray, vaccinations should be started from scratch as you don not know for sure if the dog has ever been vaccinated. The dog will need it's first distemper shot (approx $38) and in a month it will need a booster for this, same price as before. This is necessary or the first shot will be useless, this shot protects against several life threatening illnesses. The next shot is the rabies shot(approx$26) which for obvious reasons is necessary to be given to your dog. Both of these vaccinations will need to be boosted again in a year and then you can move to having them done every other year. At my clinic an examination is included with each vaccination so most people eventually switch to a program wherethey altenate shots every year, that way they don't pay as much in a single shot and their dog gets the health check each year.

In addition to shots you can deworm the dog, which I recommend just in case it has eaten something like a bird or a muskrat. Deworming can cost $10-15 I think, it really depends on the size of your dog. You can also do a topical flea treatment that also deworms so you basically hit two birds with one stone. (similar in pricing as dewormer)

These are just the basic components to keeping up with your dogs health care, I really recommend taking the dog to the vet and asking for "the works" basically. You want to start out right with your dog and getting him healthy with go a long way to making him/her a great pet. While there they can help you with any questions you may have. They can also check to see if the dog has been spayed/neutered, if it hasn't then please please please do, I know its an added cost but it makes for a much nicer pet and reduces their risk of developing cancer (mammary/prostate). I know the initial cost of everything seems like quite a lot but after the first visit its not as bad.

Toys: Most dogs like to be busy so toys can be fun. Its really up to you to find out what your dog likes to play with and go from there but I'll tell you what my dogs like: Lucy(large dog) loves to chew, I got her a kong, which I totally recommend as an awesome toy. Kongs come in different shapes and types of toys but they are virtually indestructible ($5-15) on average it depends what you are getting. Rawhides can be expensive when you think about it, som type sell for like $7 for two but you can get a bag of them for around 10.
Charlie(medium) loves balls, especially the rubber ones with bells inside, they cost about four dollars at superstore. Both dogs love milkbones (they get one at bedtime) again its a choice to spend the money and different stores have different prices, in my experience petvalu sells them at a decent price. the dogs also love empty milk jugs, which cost the price of...milk, they love runing around with them and pushing them across the snow same goes for 2L pop bottles (wouldn't let them chew them though)

Clothes: I would say not necessary unless its a short haired dog like a doberman or a chihuahua and is in contact with cold weather, then its nice to get them a winter coat if they`re spending an extanded amount of time outside. Don`t know the price though...

Extras: licensing, some areas ask for your dog to be licensed. (price will vary too for depending on area I`m sure)Also you will need a collar, and leash for sure. My clinic sells collars and leashes 10-15 dollars each, rogz is a great brand with fun styles and sturdy designs!

Hope this helps!

Where is the best place to buy a dog crate?

shakeyour@

I've been looking for a dog crate for my beagle/ basset hound but everywhere is so expensive! I bought a mesh one from walmart but she ripped that right up. Even Walmart for a cheap one is min 50 dollars for crappy quality! I keep looking on ebay but they are all too expensive too. If anyone knows of any place to buy a good quality dog crate for less money please let me know. Thanks!

Answer
You could try posting it as a need on freecycle.org...you could post a "want to buy" on craigslist.com, or you could try local rummage sales. Do any of your local radio stations have a program to buy/sell/trade items?

A crate is going to cost in the $50-$100 range for that size. I bought a nice one at Sportsman's Warehouse for my toy dog that was reasonably priced. Tractor Supply used to have the best prices on crates. Check out farm stores/hunting supply stores in your area for crates...they often have lower prices on pet supplies (and they are often much higher quality, as well).

Is Buying A Dog Right For Me?

Rob B

okay, so i'm looking at buying a dog. I only want one and ive been looking all over the internet and seem to have found a few i like. I have a very big garden which is easily capable of playing in etc. But the only downside is im at work from about 8 o clock in the morning until around 4 in the afternoon, sometimes im back earlier, sometimes later. but usually someone will be home around 4 o clock, and then from then on i am able to put my full attention towards my dog. Is this too long to leave a dog on its own? and is there anyway i can keep the dog company without actually being there or having another dog? e.g i heard about toys, leaving the radio on etc? thank you

Answer
No dog or puppy deserves being left alone for that long with no socialization. No, a radio may calm him but it won't supply his needs or keep him company, it will just keep him distracted. Especially since dogs need a fairly amount of exercise, depending on the breed. Like Border's and Setters go for 2 hours of exercise whereas Min Pins need 30 minutes-1hr and a JRT -1hr to 2hrs.... The puppy stage of a dog is the most important time for it. It NEEDS to be socialized, as this is the stage for it to develop it's personality. You can try crate training, but that requires a lot of time and work and it's only use it Potty Training mainly. If you decide to get a dog and leave it locked up in a cage, don't blame me for goin roid rage after I'm telling you it's not a good idea, especially a puppy/dog, or anywhere from 8Wks-1yr.

Can you get a dog? Yeah.... If you do I'd suggest a lazier breed such as the Newfie or Norfolk. Or a Mutt or different Pure bred from a shelter/rescue(:

Should you right now? NO

ADD : @Cn, Puppies can't 'hold it in' for very long. And better yet, you can't train them. If he were to get an adult, the chances will be better for it to hold it in.

Is this a good schedule for a new dog?

9:00 pm- Take dog outside for break
9:30- Bed Time- Let Dog loose and sleep in my room

ive never had a dog before so please help...

i plan on getting a-
norfolk terrier or pembroke welsh corgi

im at school from 6 45 to 3 and my parents wont help, they want me to do it all in order to have a dog

Answer
No, better to do this.

Take out dog at 6:15am to pee. Make sure you take him to the same spot everytime and don't let him pee anywhere else. Keep him in the same area until he pees. Will help later;)

6:30am: Feed Dog.
6:45am: Take dog outside to pee and poop. Dogs usually feel like going pee and poop after they eat in the morning.
12:00pm: Take dog outside to go potty, walk him.
3:45pm: Take dog outside to potty
4:00pm: Feed dog
4:15pm: Take dog outside to potty
8:15pm: Take dog outside to potty
8:30pm: Feed dog a little less than the first two times.
9:00pm: Take dog outside to potty

If you go to sleep at 9:30 also, then its fine to make him go to sleep to. But please keep in mind, if you don't want accidents in the crate, you must take him out in the middle of the night, say around 1am.

If you yourself don't sleep at 9:30pm, keep him up with you until you do go to sleep. And take him out to potty before you do. Remember, the more times you take him out to potty, less chance of accidents happening in the house. You SHOULD NOT let him loose when you are sleeping. Unless you want everything chewed up. And, you SHOULD NOT let him sleep in bed with you. That puts him on the same level as you and you will never establish a dominant role. Put him in his crate at night. Ignore the crying for the first few days until he realizes that crying will not get him out of the crate. Hope this is helpful.

Dog Crate??

camille t

Whenever we try to put our dog in the kitchen, (big space, with her bed), and block it off with a baby gate she will tear at the baby gate until she gets out. she is only a 16 lb dog, and she ripped it out of our wall.

We now bought her a excersise pen, for her and her puppies, and she will scratch and bite and pull it every which way. I'm nervous that she is going to pinch one of her puppies in it...

Any reccomendations on how to make her less stressed out when she is gated away from us??

We give her treats, and have tried to make it a happy place, but she is just not interested.

Also, whenever she gets out, she tears up anything that we have out. ie: garbage, toys, paper, really anything.

Answer
Hi. I agree with your answer from "German Shepard." The SIZE of the crate shouldn't be to large because dogs are part of the wolf pack. As such, they are used to "dens" which is exactly what you are doing when you "Crate them."
Go to any petstore...or supply store. Add an attachable water bowl to the inside of the crate.
Add stuffed animals to the inside of the crate.
Add ONE large suffed animal.....this simulates "littermates" and gives her company.
One last suggestion: Place a light blanket OVER the top and three sides of the crate...to create that "den" atsmophere and she should be good to go.
Have a great weekend. Blessings, Patti

can i use a big dog crate for a rat cage???

blair-witc

i might be getting a rat and i want to know if i could use a big dog cage or turtle tank for a cage. i would like glue little stairs and platforms on it if i could. im not being cheap. i just want to know :]
ohhhh. so if i get 2 rats how big do you think the cage should be?

love, kelly. i- uh - uh - i mean the blair witch!!!! muhahahahaha?
what if i get this for a 10 gallon tank (which i have) http://www.petco.com/product/10806/Small-Animal-High-Rise.aspx would that work?

Answer
Wire dog crates have too much spacing between the bars. Plastic dog crates? Well, they're plastic and rats LOVE to chew, so it would be a bad combination.

Turtle tanks are not recommended, due to the low air circulation.

Glue can be dangerous, if ingested.

It's best to get a large WIRE cage with spacing of 1/2 inch between the bars.

It's also best to get 2 or more rats. Never get a single rat! They're happier with a friend, and you should want optimal happiness for them.

EDIT: The cage I purchased for 2 adult male rats is the Super Pet My First Home for Exotics ($99)
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753352

Get anything similar in dimensions, and it should be just fine.
30"L x 18" W x 30"H

Looking for advice on dog crates for extra large dogs.?

stanleyand

I have 100 pound German Shepard. His current crate is heavy duty plastic with a wire front. He has bent the wire in the front enough where he can now push his way out and escape. I am looking for a heavy duty crate for a dog this size, one that is very strong and guaranteed not to let the dog escape! Thanks!

Answer
Try an all wire crate. The plastic crate is more in closed and its easier for him to get leverage to push on the door. I find the wire crates to be much better. I've always used them for my dogs, and I've had some pretty big dogs. Never any escapes. I find the doors on wire crates are more secure than the plasic ones. I don't think you can get a create that will guarantee your dog will not escape, give a wire one a try though. Make sure the wires/bars are thick enough.

Dog crating?

Margastar

What is "crating" a dog. I've never heard of this before, it sounds awful, especially for the larger dogs. I've never known a single person to "crate" their dogs. What is the purpose of it.
Sounds like a kennel, but they are in the backyard. I assume crates are for those which live in apartments. No way would I leave my dog stuck indoors all day with just a space for them to turn around in.

Answer
Crating a dog is simply training him to stay in his crate. The crate is like a plastic or wire "dog house" that the dog can move around in and see out of. A lot of dogs like to have the crate as a place to retire to when everything gets hectic and he's had enough. They bury their treats there and bring in toys to keep from other dogs.

People usually crate their dog either to sleep at night or if they are not going to be home and do not want the dog having the run of the house. Sometimes it as used as a little room to put the dog when visitors are afraid of the dog.
Some people use a crate to transport the dog to shows in the car. This is for safety.

Sound awful, but some dogs actually like having a space of their own! The crate comes in different sizes and you would get it for the size of your breed as an adult. The dog should be able to stand up and turn around in the crate.

It is a temporary place for the dog and should not take the place of being with the owner.

Dog crate?

Nafe

I have two Jack russell terriers and unfortunately there left alone on weekdays for about 5-6 hours. I walk them as much as possible but I have some serious trouble leaving them at home. I leave them in the living room and the preparation involved is crazy, I put a gate up, move furniture, take cushions off couches as they occasionally wee, so now i'm considering getting a crate or pen. Should I leave one in crate and one out? Buy two pens? Leave them In same pen? I also feel I should get one as big as poss so they're not too confined or would it be better to leave them in one recommended for their size ( cosy ) ? I cant leave them in any other rooms and the living room setting up is so tiring. Any advice would be great, thanks

Answer
get a crate for each that is only big enough for them to stand up, turn around and lay down in. anything bigger is just room to poop. crate training is a fabulous way to housetraining. it should be started from when you get them, that is probably why you have such a hard time with them going in the house. without proper training in a cage a dog can't learn to respect the enviroment they live in.

How should I crate train my Jack Russell Terrier at night?

tman426

I know puppies can only hold their bladders for so long, but I don't want mine getting used to going at 2 in the morning everyday.

Answer
Crate training can be a great way to help with house training. You should make the crate a positive thing though. Dogs I know that are crate trained actually like to go in their crate, and will go in easily when you tell them.

The main thing about crate training is showing the dog that the crate is a good place to be.

The best way I know of is to throw a small treat inside, and hopefully the dog will go inside after the treat. If he doesn't then just guide him in, but don't force him to stay. As the dog enters tell him or her crate, or whatever word you want to use, and give him a lot of praise, and another treat or two. Let him leave when he wants. then repeat, telling him how good he is when he's inside. The crate should always be a plesant place the dog wants to be.

After he goes in on his own, you can try saying crate without the treat, and just praise when he's in. You can probably also try putting him in the crate at night after he's learned it's a good place.

Never ever put him in the crate as punishment, when he goes in there it's only for something good.

Getting A dog how much money do I need??

Logan

Im very close to getting my new puppy. I know how much she costs but how much will I need to pay for shots, spay/neutering, food, crate, toys, ect... Im also not sure if this petco trainig class is worth it. Its 99.99. It teaches the puppy basic tricks, potty training, and other stuff. Oh yea Im 13. Ok thx

Answer
I buy one 40lb bag of dog food thats 16% protein (20% during hunting season when hes working hard) for $20 at the feed store once every 6 months.
I bought electric clippers and cut my dogs hair when I feel like it and they paid for themself on the first use ($40).
I bought 3 in 1 dog vaccines Kennel Cough (Bordetella), and Leptospirosis and Rabies and administer them myself for $60 and thats the entire series of shots (you dont need to keep giving shots after one year old).
Lastly a flea bath once a month or so in the summer (not needed when indoors in the winter usually) for maybe $20 for the whole year.

Thats a repeat expense of $100 per year, and an upfront cost of $100. Of course to train your dog your going to want a kennel, or house, for him. You can make one yourself for $50-$100, and your going to want water and food dishes so maybe another $10 there. If your not satisfied with a rope leash (free) then your going to have to buy a collar and leash for say $30.

As far as the classes go, they arent worth it. Many places have free dog training seminars, and if you really want to learn how to get your dog to behave then get a book and read up on it. For the first year of your dog's life I wouldn't even worry about training, your dog should be happy and care free for its first year and you need to spend time developing a relationship with it. That way you can effectively discipline it later on. Simple things like "No" and "Potty" are fine, but don't discipline for wrong behaviour until its old enough to understand.

All told I can't possibly see any sane person with a non-show dog spending more than $100-200 a year on it. Buy from a feed store not a "pet store" and get a healthy dog from good breeders and you will not have to worry about sickness. Any decent breeder should guarantee the dog for life.

how much does a dog usually cost to take care of monthly?

sparkyrae9

i want to get a dog but i have to research care of dogs so my mom will let me get one i need to know how much what i will be paying for and how much the individual thing will cost.

Thanks a lot Rachel

Answer
There isn't going to be a set price.
There are too many variables. The size and breed of the dog for one as well as where you live. The prices in Ohio are about double what I paid in Texas for vet care.

For example the size of the dog can significantly impact the food price. A 50 pound bag at $25 will last a 10 pound dog alot longer than a 100 pound dog. You may need 2-3 bags a month.

There is also flea protection, heartworm protection.. which are also based on weight. Shots are going to cost alot in the beginning for puppy series, however an older dog may only need boosters.
Depending on the breed, there may be grooming needs. That can run quite a bit. Make sure to look at the needs of the breed you are thinking about.

And don't forget about any emergencies that come up. I have a dog that was diagnosed with epilepsy this month. The ER visit cost me $330. The meds will run $30 a month, plus bloodwork every 6 months at $100.
Also, add in your initial costs. A crate, dishes, dog pen or chain, leashes..etc.

Good luck!

What is the best way to wrap a Puppy for Christmas?

Q. I will be sending my nephew a dog this christmas.

Answer
I assume his parents know, that the whole family is ok with it, and that he is responsible enough to care for this dog for the next 10-15 years (like when he heads to college)?

I would give him a package of all the dog's equipment with instructions - "On January 2nd you have an all-expense paid trip to the local dog rescue to pick out a new friend. Bring this collar so everyone will know he's yours. Bring this leash to keep him safe by your side. Bring these treats to make him happy. Put this crate in your room so he can sleep next to your side." etc. That way the new dog/puppy doesn't have to deal with the stress inherent in Christmas day and your nephew can pick out exactly which dog he wants. The instructions can also be modified to say that the puppy will be delivered on a certain date.

A Christmas day delivery will be stressful for everyone.

Daschund baby puppy infromation?

Hey there! So, I'm buying myself a smooth coated miniature daschund in the next month or so. Can you pleas tell me more information about them? If you could also tell me about what to do on the first night with the puppy, cause i hear they cry a lot the first few nights? Anyways, explain their personalities, how they act like. How do they mostly like, you know, what do they do on a daily basis? Are they funny, mean, anything. Just swarm me with information of anykind of the miniature daschund breed. Thanks ;)

Answer
Please please please let the pup stay with it's mother and siblings, ideally until 13 weeks, do not bring the pup home sooner than 8 weeks. Puppies miss out on important life lessons, like bite inhibition, from their siblings and mother.

To learn more about the dachshund, visit the Dachshund Club of America website http://www.dachshund-dca.org. Also, do pick up the book Dachshunds for Dummies, it is quite good, despite it's title.

You do not want the pup to sleep in your bed, borrow a very small crate from someone, put some old towels in there. The crate should be in your room, next to your bed. The learning to be in a crate, will be a big help in housebreaking.

When you know your bringing your pup home, the first thing you need to do is take the pup to your vet. This should be within a couple of days of having the pup, just to make sure he's healthy. Many states have a Puppy Lemon Law, to protect people from being sold sick puppies. When you take your pup to the vet for this "wellness" vet visit, she will discuss with you the vaccination schedule. Do discuss with her that some Miniature Dachshunds have a reaction to vaccines. You should ask the breeder if any of the dogs she breed has had a vaccine reaction.

Try to get the pup into a routine. You need to feed it 3 small meals a day. Do not feed to much or the pup will get diareahh. You will have to get up in the middle of the night to potty the puppy. If the pup has trouble getting back to sleep, cover the crate with a towel.

Remember, that little puppies are pooping and peeing machines. It amazes me how much water can come out of that little body. So just be prepared.

All dogs have their own personalitites. I own Standard Wirehair Dachshunds. Dachshunds were bred as hunting dogs, so they have a lot of energy. They will gladly kill squirrels, mice, rats and anything else they can get their teeth on. They can be stubborn and indepenent thinkers, they can also be over-protective of their people, home, food, toys, etc. Do not tolerate bad behavior, it will only escalate. You need to be a fair but firm owner.

As for the back. Hopefully, the breeder your getting your pup from is responsible and had not had any dogs go down and if she did, bred away from the problem as best she could. However, this can happen in well-bred dogs and poorly bred dogs, the problem is poly genetic. They do not break their backs, IVDD has to do with the spinal Disc. It is very important that you do not allow your dachshund to get fat and out of shape. Your dachshund should be fit and firm. Lots of exercise, hiking, swiming,

So far, I've had 3 dachshunds, all very different in personality. My first Standard Wire female, was very sweet (she was a rescue) but not hte brightest lightbulb in the box, however, she could unsnap, unzip, unbutton anything if there was hope of getting a piece of food. She once dragged a delivery of a 20 pound box of dog food at least 15 feet, ate through the cardboard box, then ate thru the bag until she got to the kibble. She lived to be 17, passed last year.

I have a 4 yo male Standard Wire. He's very serious and a real mommy's boy. He will do anything I ask him, he's very smart, has been very easy to train, he's very agile and there's nothing he can't do. He is stand-offish with strangers. He does agility, obedience, field, breed and does actual hunting, all successfully. He well play fetch until his feet fall off or until a squirrel crosses his path.

I also have a 5 month old female Standard Wire, is a love bug and a real social butterfly. She loves the world. She's very smart, I housebroke her quite easily, but she has more of an independent streak than my male. She's not so interested in fetch, but likes to play tug with fuzzy furry toys. Today, she discovered the squirrels go up trees.

Whether or not a dachshund or any breed or mix become mean, depends not only on the breeding, but also on you. It's important that you socialize socialize socialize your pup with lots of people and really nice stable dogs. When your pup is old enough, find a good Puppy obedience class and enroll. The instructors will teach you to train your puppy some very basic but important commands, games to play and can give housebreaking advice and can help with any other problems you may be having.

Should I give my dog to my Dad?

Miss Motiv

Last year, my Dad's dog passed away in my arms. She was 14, & I'm very happy I was there with her, because my Dad works all day & is hardly home. He was OBSESSED with this dog, she was his baby! But because she was so old, she'd just lay around & wait for him. He really wants my dog now, who's a pyreneese/husky mix. He's only 7 months old & over 70 pounds! If he isn't crated or kept in my fenced in yard while I'm gone, he gets bored & tears things up-he's a puppy. My Dad always walked his dog several times a day, but while he's gone I know he'd leave this dog out. My Dad doesnt like crating & doesnt have a fenced in yard.
I keep trying to tell him, he's never going to find another dog like his last one. It'll be hard! She was just so old & well behaved. He owns a restaurant chain & is never home during the day. He really wants a dog to come home to. I gave him my cat, & he loves it! But he still wants the company of a dog.
Should I give him mine? Or wait till he's older. Or should I try to get him to get a fence? I don't know! He has a really nice house & if he gets a puppy, they need to stay entertained or they'll get into anything. My Dad is pretty much alone & will get a dog either way.

**No, it really doesn't bother me that I gave my Dad my cat & am considering giving my dog. I still get to see them & I know my Dad spoils his pets rotten!

Answer
Check at animal shelters.. There are tons of well trained dogs that would be perfect for him. It sounds like a puppy wouldn't be a good fit for his lifestyle since they need a ton of attention. There are dogs that need homes and would love being spoiled by your dad. I suggest that you take your dad to a shelter or SPCA and tell them about his lifestyle and they will find a perfect fit for him. Also, if you don't want to spend a ton of money, there are dogs on websites such as kijiji that are free and their owners just want them to go to a loving home. Hope one of these suggestions works out for you guys :) best of luck!

Where can I put my dogs when theres no one home?

Almost Fam

Like when I got to school (no ones home, my parents are working) I put them in the garage 'cause therees no other place. But, it takes me a long time everyday to get them in, the big dog (Great dane) runs around the house trying to get away but I have no other play to put them. If I put the outside the little one will find a way to escape the backyard (although we have fences, nothing works). If we keep them in the house, they'll pee all over the place, rip things and make a mess. I cant hire a dog sitter cause I dont have enough money.. Where should I put them when I got to school or is there someway to calm them down?
The greatdane is 1 year old and the puggle is 2 years old.

Answer
The best thing you can do is to crate train your dogs.
One dog alone can make a lot of mess, two dogs together can feed off eachother and create a disaster of a mess.
Crate training is not cruel and it keeps them safe (and your stuff safe) while you are gone.
Crate training also helps housetraining because a dog won't generally soil their "dens".
Dogs mostly sleep during the day anyway, and your dogs are old enough that they can hold it for
several hours.

Buy a crate for each dog that's big enough for them to stand, turn around and lie down, but not bigger. If money is an issue, try craigslist or Kijiji they always have second hand crates.

Make the crate a nice place for them. Give them a nice chew toy so they'll relax while you leave.
Never use the crate as punishment.

Here are some articles on Crate training:

http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/training/training15.htm

Never tie a dog out on a chain and leave him. It's dangerous.

Questionma

Do they allow pets in the Biltmore Hotel? I want to know because my family is probably going to take a new year's vacation in Baltimore Hotel in North Carolina and we want to know if we can take our pet miniature schnauzer named Pepper. Where to find a dog crate w/ divider AND folds up?

mkt

I need a 36 inch crate for our puppy that has the divider for growth, AND is possible to fold or easily dismantle & make flat for travel.

Does this exist?

Answer
Petsmart has a pretty good selection - and they have crates with dividers that fold flat. I got a 36" crate there.

Soft Dog Crate that Exceeds 33in in Height?

Maria N

Hi, I have an English Mastiff and his current crate which is 33in is starting to be too small for him. His head rubs and his back rubs. Id prefer the cloth instead of wire because its lighter for me to carry and more portable. Can anyone help me find a portable/soft crate that is around 33-54in in height?

Answer
You mentioned that your dog's crate was starting to get too small so I am assuming he is not fully grown. The largest soft-sided dog crate I have seen was 36" inches tall. The tallest wire crate is also 36". May I suggest a soft sided dog exercise pen which is lightweight and portable at 48" tall. Good luck in your search.

Stray dog showing signs of labor...?

KMM

I asked a question about a stray pregnant dog I found earlier, but now she's been panting heavy, nesting, and now she is really tired. She hasn't been trying to push though still, so I'm sure pups will be here today or tomorrow. My question is should I sleep in the living room with her just in case she goes into full labor and has complications, or should I put her in my labs XL wire kennel (she's a smaller dog) and sleep in my bedroom? I am trying to stay up as late as I can, but she is finally sleeping, so I thought about leaving her on my dogs bed (where she has made her nest today) in the corner of the living room and just sleeping on the couch in case she starts crying. I called the emergency vet, but it is 45 mins away, but I just let them know what was going on in case I have any complications with her. I sure wish this sweet girl was home with her family, but I can not find them and I think someone dumped her out here. :(

Answer
Putting her in a crate would likely upset her, so just leave her where she is. Dogs can normally give birth on their own without assistance, but there is always the exception, so staying near her might be a good idea.

You get what you pay for - what is the best brand of crate for dogs?

crzycoooki

Just went and bought a XL crate for $70 brand new; thought it was too good to be true and it was. The thing collapses at the the slightest poke. It is an off-brand crate. So, since I hope to avoid this mistake next time, what brand of crate(wire), in your experience, is best built?

Answer
I would die to have one of these: http://www.tejascrates.com/

But for wire crates, Petmate makes a decent wire crate. The model they sell at Walmart isn't very durable but the one from Petedge.com is great.

Dog Kennel Aggression?

Jake Frant

I own a Pitbull and she is the sweetest girl, she is nice to every human she meets, and other dogs. But the second lunch time comes around, she turns in to a mean dog. Lately, I've taken it upon my self to train the dog since no one else in my family will, and she finally stopped growling and chasing after my other dog when i pick up the food bowls, but there is still one more problem.

When its time for her to go into her kennel, she will run in and instantly start growling and barking at anyone who is trying to close it, or come near it, or touch it. Why does she do this? If you open it up and she walks out she won't growl or anything, only when she is IN her kennel.

How can I stop this? Please do not tell me to hire some dog expert, cause I can't afford that. I'm not afraid of being bit by her cause she might be a pitbull, but she is tiny. Please I'd like any advice as to what I can do to stop this.

Answer
I would feed separately and make your dog sit and watch you get the food and set it down. I would then stand over the food while looking at the dog and making sure the dog sat and waited. Walk away from the food a few feet and tell it to go eat. Next, "out of it" Take an object of interesting smell that your dog really doesn't care about and place in the floor. Bring your dog into the room and allow it to investigate for a few seconds and then say "out of it". When you say it you want to walk to the dog and object using your body to move the dog back. Think magnets pushing away from each other. They don't touch but when one moves towards the other it moves back. Repeating the command as you do so you want to place yourself over the object and the dog a few feet away. Once it has the idea of "out of it" when you are moving the dog backwards after it has left the object use the words "back up" repeatedly. Once you are there tell your dog to sit and stay. Then you mess with the object, walk away and tell your dog whatever command you want use, investigate, check it out, whatever and allow the dog to come back to the object. I would also suggest having a cane or something like with you randomly and to rub on your dog with it petting it with it getting the dog use to the object and seeing it as something good, not something to be be fearful of. So now your dog knows "out of it", "back up", "check it out", and is friendly with a cane. Now that all of that is down, use it during meal time. After you've gone through the feeding routine while the dog is eating, tell it "out of it" and do the same thing as the object. Hopefully through the course of training your dog sees you as the dominate and it as the submissive and will obey the command remove itself from the food without issue. If the dog tenses up or growls do not advance on it. Repeat the command firmer and make yourself stand bigger. You may want something like a cane (assuming your dog doesn't freak over you holding something like that see above) and if the dog does not move back repeat command even firmer and use the cane to touch the dog (like an extension of your arm to simply break the space and try to redirect the focus from food to my master just touched me). This is not to be menacing, just a touch and gentle redirection. You can slightly push against the dog repeating back up. This should go like it did with the object and you should be able to stand over the bowl and mess with the food without issue. * If the dog does not comply or shows any aggression, tenses up, growls, odd posture, or anything odd the dog may have severe aggression and you could get hurt* Now for the kennel issue. If all has gone well with the other training the dog should obey you and go in and out of it's cage whether it wants to or not without issue because the dog will have learned through training to obey commands. So open the cage and back away from it and tell the dog to sit then give the command to get in it's cage firmly. If the dog just stands repeat the command. Once inside tell her to sit. and stay without closing the cage. (this is where repeating the basic training every day comes in handy) If the dog tries to move tense or anything you tell it at or no very firmly! I would also have the dog lay down and stay. Any time the dog growls or tenses you verbally reprimand him telling at harshly and lay down. When doing this you try to become larger to emphasize you mean business if needed. After a minute or two of laying down have the dog come out of the cage and sit a few feet away and close the door. Love on the dog and tell it good. Repeat having the dog go in and out without closing it like that. Sometimes let the dog come right back out on command, sometimes leave it for several minutes. Sometimes stand away from the cage sometimes right next to it. After several successful times with no tenseness or aggression (definitely no fear) command it to go in and lay down and stay. Reach for the door as if to close it. If the dog even tenses give a very firm/harsh at or no without letting go of the door. Once the dog is relaxed again let go of the door and step away, Then tell the dog to come out. Repeat. Once the dog is calm for that close it half way using the same methods. The goal it to get so that you can close the door with the dog at minimum accepting it without action-growling or such. Once you can close the door wait a minute or so and let the dog out again. Repeat often!! Once the dog is ok with it all leave it in the cage for 30 minutes, then a few hours later for an hour and so on.
*If you are ever afraid of your dog get help or don't keep the dog*

Is my dog a full brindle pitbull?

Erwan

Hi there meet Mia , she's 7 months old and healthy and happy !

I don't mind either she's a pit or a staff so it's all Gud but I just wanna be sure .

Thanks dog s lover

Answer
Without paperwork from a reputable kennel club (for an American Pit Bull Terrier that would be the United Kennel Club (UKC) or American Dog Breeder's Association (ADBA)) from a breeder that you trust (as some individuals will falsify paperwork) there is no way to be sure if the dog is purebred or not.

"Brindle" is a color and is not significant in determining the dog's breed (nor is it special, rare, a bloodline, or any other silly hogwash people commonly say). It's the equivalent of saying "Is my dog a purebred black tri Australian Shepherd?" (or any other 'color' and 'breed' combination).

Bully breed mixes are more common than true APBTs anymore, and depending how the genetic gamble turns out a mixed breed of any two breeds have a chance of looking like a purebred dog. Statistically speaking if you got her from someone that was not reputable and you got her without paperwork, she's probably your run of the mill pit-mix. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it is what it is.

Not a good photo of the dog to give you an idea how close to standard she may be for either breed either (stack shot from the side works best, and something to give an idea of size is helpful as well regardless if it's something in the photo or a note that the dog weighs X pounds)

Looks like she needs a bath though, and a vet check if she has not had one already.

Crates for Dogs?

Cryptic Sh

I'm just wondering what size would be best for a dog about 24 inches tall? Like...small, medium, or large? Thanks!

Answer
The 28 inch wide by 30 inch high by 42 inch long should be about the right size.

bed in crate?

Padma M

should i get a dog bed which fits in a crate? if yes, what should the sizes be for both? it should fit a golden retriever

Answer
The crate should be bid enough for the dog to stand up in and turn around. I have a 70 pound Siberian who has a 42 inch crate. I bought a fleece pad to put on the bottom of the crate, but most of the time he pushes it to the side, preferring the coolness of the tray.

Anyone travel by air with their dogs?

Trophy Wif

I have a puppy and I will be going out of town for a week and want to take him with me because I would be able to take better care of him where I am going then a kennel would, or my husband who will be working. I am worried though because he is getting big so I don't know if he will be too big to take on the flight. He will be 12 weeks going there and 13 weeks when he comes back. Have you flown with your dog? How big was your dog? Did it fit under the seat? Im concerned.
I have a Vera Bradley carrier for my little princess Izzy, who is a ragdoll. The puppy does not fit in there though. Too bad it is perfect for the puppy since it is waterproof. He is about 7 lbs right now. I was considering getting a bigger Vera Bradley, but he would out grow it immediately, so I may get a cheap one. I dont get the fear of flying comment or I would laugh?!? Im not sure sorry. Also the dog would be much happier with me and would be outside and going on walks practically all day. Also can you add what airline you flew with your puppy?

Thanks!
Thanks for the health certification tip! I will make sure that I get it the day before I leave so that it does not expire for the trip back! I didnt even think of that! It was very very helpful.

Answer
CALL THE AIRLINES for size restrictions!!!

Remember, the health cert. is ONLY valid for TEN DAYS!

Sure wish folks could stop projecting *their* fear-of-flying on a dog. I've shipped dozens of dogs-in cargo. It is SAFE!

added=rotflmao...OK...you said "concerned"...my apologies. A pup of 7lbs. will NOT outgrow a carrier in a week,though.
&...there are a billion "OMG! dogggy-woggies DIE in horrible scary ary-o-pwanes!!!" posted here daily. I went on auto-pilot..harharharharhar

how much does it cost?? for maltese dog in air travel?

Q. i know wrong category but people will notice see i really want a dog and this is a 5 to 7 pound dog and i want to know how much it would cost for airtravel for example dallas texas to newyork then newyork to albania (14hrs) is it even possible that we could check on the dog during the flight

Answer
Some airlines don't accept pets at all, or allow them only in the passenger cabin. Others offer three options. From most to least desirable, they are:

* in the passenger cabin
* as excess baggage, or
* as cargo.

In the Cabin

If your dog is tiny enough - generally under 20 pounds - to be comfortable in a pet carrier that fits under an airline seat, you can take it on the plane with you. You can find out the exact measurements of the under-seat space from the airline. Most airlines allow only one animal in the cabin per flight, so don't just show up with your dog; make arrangements when you purchase your own ticket.

Most airlines charge about $50 to $100 for the animal's one-way fare, regardless of destination. Many will also rent or sell you a kennel that will fit under the seat.

This is by far the best way to fly with your dog. Aside from being stuck in a carrier for a while (and not being able to stick its head out the window), it's not much different for the dog than a car ride.

Hope this helps!

fold up dog crate for a big dog that folds up as small as possible?

Bekah

my husband does K9 search and rescue. he currently has a wire crate for his search dog that folds up flat but it still takes up way too much space and is not great to carry everywhere with him like he needs to. we train Bloodhounds so the crate needs to be big enough for a 95 pound dog. does anyone know of a good crate for a big dog that folds up as small as possible so it can easily be thrown in a car without taking up too much space? the crate we are currently using is 42" wide by 26" long.

Answer
I don't know if this would be the kind of crate you would be considering, but have you thought about using the material fold up crate? It might take up the same amount of room, but at least it would be lighter to carry.

Also, there are crates that we use in agility, that are sort of like "pop-ups", you pull a chord and it opens, made out of like parachute material, it folds up into a bag. Something like this:
http://www.mightymightdoggear.com or check CleanRun http://www.cleanrun.com they have another type of nylon pop-up crate also, there's another type of pop-up that folds like an umbrella and I think it's called the Umbra Pet Tent.

I have friends who have the Umbra Pet Tent and they love it, they have medium sized dogs though, ones a Portie and the other is a Beardie.
