I am moving soon and I have no idea how to unassemble the crate since the i bought it in the summer and the instructions are long gone. Is there any way to get the instructions online?

Answer
Ok, I looked it up online and its like mine, but different company.

You want to close up the door.
Have one hand on the top near the front
One hand on the door
Lift up the top of the cage with your hand
Then you should be able to push the door inward inside the cage.

Then go to the back of the cage and lift up on the top, while you push inward the back.

Then its kind of weird the way it folds down, but you will figure that out ok.

Go ahead and see if you can do it and let me know.

What type of dog crate is best to buy for disaster evacuations?

dani

Ever since I heard about all the dogs left behind during Katrina and the ones that were not allowed into shelters because their owners didn't have proper crates for them, i have been so worried the same would happen to my dogs. Although I think I'd rather die in a disaster than leave my dogs behind, I want to be prepared in case this happens. Are there certain crates that are acceptable for evacuations on public transit and entrance into shelters? There are so many different types and I just don't know if certain ones would not be permissable for this purpose. Can anyone help?

Answer
Buy a folding crate it can be stored folded down and carried like a suitcase, then very easily assembled. They are best because the dog has full view out of the metal bars to see it's surroundings. Dogs in plastic vari kennels don't have a very good view out and can become more agitated in them. Four Paws makes a nice one called a Dlx Folding Crate and comes in lengths of 19,24,30,36,42 and 48" long

What is the over-all things that "Search & Rescue" Team does?

dog crates japan image

TheDreamer

When I grow up, I want to be part of the Search and Rescue Team. The ones who rescue stray dogs. What do they do aside from rescuing the dogs?

Answer
What you are interested in is NOT Search & Rescue (SAR). That is finding LOST people (like missing kids, hikers, Alzheimer's victims that have wandered off) or recovering bodies due to: drownings, building collapses, storms (stuff like what happened in Japan) due to the earthquake & tsunami. VERY important work, IMO, & very rewarding, finding lost/missing people. Some folks even train dog to find/track lost pets.

We already have people who do Animal Control & who generally pick up stray or lost pets. That can be very sad or frustrating work, especially if you have to see animal cruelty or you have to put animals to sleep. These folks do sometimes have to go to court to testify aginst animal abusers.

Doing rescue and adoption through a group (set up to do that) is still different. Most of these dogs are either surrendered to the Rescue group or gotten out of kill shelters, by the groups just before they would be euthanized. (There is no money in it, although many people feel a great sense of accomplishment in doing it as a volunteer).

Dogs have to be transported to a vet, have to be given a health exam, shots, spay/neuter a check for heart worms, fecal worms etc. & treated for any ailments, infections etc. Dogs usually go into foster care until they heal from their spay/neuter. This can last 2 weeks, but can become longer, if the pet isn't easy to re-home or has an ongoing health problem. While waiting a good permanent home, the foster parent tries to house-break, crate-train the dog, lead break, etc. The dog needs to be EVALUATED as to how it is with other: dogs, cats & children before being offered for adoption. Rasing money to help fund this is tough & a constant battle. Adoption fees rarely cover all the costs. Finding homes can also be challenging & ads are expensive.

How do i get my son 2 sleep all night?

Angela

My son is almost 9 months old. He always used to sleep all night in his own crib, since he was 5 weeks old. I started letting him take naps with me on the couch or in our bed. Now, he wont sleep at all in his crib. I think he should cry it out, but my husband always runs to the rescue. How do i get him to fall asleep and stay asleep in his own crib again? And if i do let him cry it out, how long should i let him cry for? How long will I have to do it? Im scared to go in his room and pick him up because i think im feeding the problem. But everytime I do, he instantly stops crying and sleeps on my chest. sometimes i go in there and give him his pacifer and try to walk out, but he gets even more upset. If i pick him up, he can sleep on me all night....but as soon as i try laying him back down, it starts again. What should I do?

Answer
For small babies, crying is the only way of communicating their needs as they cannot verbalise these yet. If a baby consistently gets the message that their attempts to communicate with you are ignored, they will eventually give up trying. So you may think you have won the battle, but you may have lost the war. People who think they have "broken a bad habit" now after "only" a few nights/weeks (!) of letting their babies "cry it out" now, should not be surprised when that baby grows into a sullen teenager who rejects your attempts to communicate with him/her then. I challenge the person who mentions 'several studies' to name just one--why did they not give a link to their source?
Why did you start letting your baby take naps with you in the first place? Probably because babies are so cute, so vulnerable, it is our instinct as a parent to protect them as much as we can. Your husband is still following this instinct. Don't let so-called experts who make money selling books make you doubt your own instincts. Follow your heart. Isn't it heartbreaking for you to listen to your little precious one crying when all it takes is a cuddle from you for him to stop? Isn't this causing you more loss of sleep than a contented baby peacefully sleeping curled up against you? There are extremely few cases recorded of a baby being crushed by a parent in their sleep if they co-sleep, the only contraindications would be if the parent is obese or reflexes are dulled by alcohol or drugs. To offset these, many more babies' lives have been saved from cot death because a co-sleeping parent is aware of changes in breathing and wakes up in time to save the baby. Have you ever heard of a cat or dog suffocating her litter? Only sows need farrowing crates because commercial farming has rendered them obese.
Co-sleeping was the norm in human history, and still is, not just in "primitive" societies but in countries that I have personal experience of such as Japan and Greece. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Bed_of_Ware for a bed in England big enough for 15 people. The early American pioneer log cabins only had one room and the whole family would have shared a bed simply to stay warm. The idea of babies sleeping separately only came recently when affluence brought central heating and houses/apartments large enough for separate rooms for each member. So why do Mum and Dad still share a bed? The sex is just a few minutes, not even every night, it could easily happen elsewhere. No, it is the need to cuddle up to somebody for warmth and comfort. Do you think Baby needs this less?
Furthermore, I am concerned by a common thread running through many answers. Pacifiers, special CDs with music to resemble the heartbeat, separate cribs, bottles--all artificial substitutes, all material objects invented by companies to make money, to replace natural things like mother's breast and milk, and her heartbeat which after all the baby heard for nine months, and still wants to be soothed by outside the womb.
Personally I read a great number of parenting books while I was pregnant, and I found the "cry it out" "sleep-training" approach horrifying and cruel. The one author I found consistently congenial, intuitively appealing but also with sound science to back up his approach, is Dr William Sears. I have all his Parenting Library books but you can get a good idea of the basics of attachment parenting, including sleep, here: http://www.askdrsears.com/
Listen to your son rather than the "experts", his crying when he is alone, his 'instantly stops crying' when he is with you, tell it all. You should not be 'scared' to listen to your heart. If you didn't have doubts about the "cry it out" approach you wouldn't have posted the question here. You are lucky that your husband is already on the right wave-length and will support you in this. You will be rewarded by a secure, affectionate little boy as he grows up. One day he will want to be alone (and it will hurt you!), right now he wants to be with you all the time. Is that too much to ask?

Are there dog crates that will accommodate two dogs with a divider and two doors?

The Truth

We have limited space and I was wondering if any of you have seen dog crates made specifically for two dogs, with a divider between the dogs and two doors.

Answer
There ARE crates that would work like that, but you would have to do a solid divider (like a thick slab of wood) or two wire dividers set inches apart from one another to prevent the dogs from reaching through and getting at one another.

One wire divider would leave enough room for them to get at one another if they get agitated (which can happen), and ears/tails can be injured or lips torn up. My dog's crate has three doors - one in the middle front and one on each end. I could put dividers in there and be able to put one dog on each side no problem.

This one would work just as well (one door on each end):
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3512172&lmdn=Crates+%26amp%3B+Kennels

Please remember that the crate should be only big enough for a dog to sit, stand, turn, and lay down comfortably. That may be difficult to do if you divide one up like that. You may end up with a space that's too big, which may lead to elimination in the crate if the dog(s) can sleep away from it.

And i would NEVER recommend letting two dogs share a crate - if they're shut in and get agitated (again, VERY possible) then they'll fight. Also, a crate should be a dog's personal den. Some dogs can get defensive over their spaces!

What to expect - Military move to Hawaii?

dog crates 48 cheapest image

Brittany

My husband and I will be moving to hawaii (military) I had some questions in regards to it. It's also our very first big move

I hear its more expensive there, just how much more expensive?

Would it be in our best interest to live on or off base?

I'm hearing of OCONUS but I'm not sure what it is and/or how it differs from BAH

How long does it usually take for a car and furniture to get there and HOW does it all get there?

Is it best to take our car or just buy one there?

Do we have to register our vehicles in HI or our drivers licenses?

Any issues to expect flying our dog? (We are aware of the 5 days or less program and our husky only flying in certain temperatures)

Answer
CONUS - Continental United States, OCONUS - Outside Continental United States. Hawaii and Alaska are outside the lower 48 so they are considered to be OCONUS locations, BUT they are still US States so therefore you get BAH w/dependents. OHA is paid when you are outside the 50 States.

Yes it is expensive in Hawaii but it depends on where you are coming from to how much. Places like New York, San Fran, San Diego, etc... are all expensive than other places. In Hawaii you get OCONUS COLA which is a Cost of Living Allowance which will MORE than make up for the price difference. Plus you have several commissaries and exchanges to purchase from, so you can actually bank some of the COLA if you budget and use it for trips.

He will be authorized a few days of TLE (Temporary Lodging) when leaving and then up to 60 days of TLA when arriving in Hawaii. The difference is TLE will only cover the hotel up to a certain amount while TLA will cover hotel & food. With TLA if you are offered a house and turn it down then you have 10 days to find a place then it stops. He will need to file for TLA every 10 days for a refund and it will come quickly.

Base living it really depends on where he is stationed and the size of your family. If it is just the two of you then it can be just as easy to live out in the area as long as you are not too far from the base/post. Some housing is actually not on base/post so he does have to drive to work. Make sure your rental is at least $400 under the BAH so you can include utilities and gas. If you have a dog/cat then make sure you take that into consideration for pet deposit and sometimes it can then be better on base/post. The cost of taking the dog with you is out of pocket, so use the DLA for it. They will refund up to $550 in quarantine costs.

YES take your vehicle, they do ship one for free for you. As long as it is in good condition. http://www.whereismypov.com is the link to the website as you will be required to take the vehicle to one of the locations. It can take up to 6 weeks to get your vehicle so make sure you do try and ship it as soon as possible and borrow one from a friend/family member. If you need a rental car while there then use Enterprise on base/post as it is cheaper. This is out of pocket as well for expenses. Register your vehicle in Hawaii is actually cheap, he needs to get a slip from his command and then you take it to registration. If you need another car then buy one from the lemon lots on base/post.

You will be authorized 2 shipments of things. The first is Express shipment where they will come and pack up your basic essentials such as pots/pans, small TV (under 19"), air mattress, towels, etc... and it is shipped immediately for you. The second is the remaining HHG, the movers will come pack up your things, place them into crates and they will be shipped via a train or truck to the location and then freighter to Hawaii. Depending on where you are moving from and what time of year it can be anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks. Summer from the East Coast then expect up to 8 weeks for example.

Your spouse never has to change his Driver's License while for you it depends on the State. Hawaii is one that will allow you to keep the license from the previous state or your Home State.

Just have an open attitude, be respectful, get out and do things (just not all at once) and you will be fine. Pearl-Hickam offers a Welcome class that will give a lot of information about the area which can be helpful. He should have a sponsor which will give some information as well.

Im about to get a chihuahua puppy but i dont know what shots it needs, what medication it needs and food/drink?

SUMAN

can anyone help me?

Answer
You should do some research in training especially but for now, get him a reliable vet. He/She will know what shots to give the new puppy. He'll need a distemper, heartworm protection if in warm areas, kennel cough, and some others that i dont remember. He'll need a rabies at 6 months of age and spay/neutered at that age too.

He needs a GOOD quality hollistic premium kibble such as Innova Puppy (which is the best food there is, all human grade meets that pass the USDA inspection) Karma Oragnics, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, etc. These brands are EXPENSIVE but you will save money on it later on vet bills and you feed less becasue they have no fillers. Innova is what i feed and its 20$/6.6 lbs or 48$/16 lbs (in ottawa)

If you can't afford those prices then i suggest a brand like Wellness or Costco's Kirkland dog food. Those are cheaper but still pretty good.

AVOID foods like IAMS, Eukanuba, pedigree, purina. They might be famous but are HORRIBLE for your dog.

Drink: just give her plenty of water.

Other Supplies: a crate with a divider, crate set, playpen, nylabone, kongs, other chew toys, some stuffed toys, food/water dish, collar, leash, harness, training books, puppy classes

good luck :)

I have been trying to figure out how much yardage I will need to make fabric covers for my dogs crates. One crate is 30" L x 21" W x 24"H and the other crate is 42" L x 28"W x 31"H

The fabric is 58" wide.

PLEASE HELP ME !!!

THANK YOU :)

Answer
Why not use a sheet!! I've done this with my crates - cheap, less fuss and very effective.

ps To the person who suggests otherwise, actually covering the top and 3 sides of a crate is by far the best way to use a crate - it makes them into a little den, a safe and quite spot for a dog to take a nap in peace. And it shuts out any drafts that may be around where the crate is situated. If the dog is crated, and in a draft, he stands no chance of getting out of it.

How much does a pug puppy cost?

dog crates cheap prices on ... Crate Mat | BEST DOG BED - Sale Cheap Indestructible dog bed with
dog crates cheap prices image

Aiden

I want to know how much a pug will cost with all the supplies and vaccinations. But if you can I would appreciate it if you gave me the cost of everything in the three different parts. The price of the pug and the supplies and the vaccinations. I thought pugs were about $400, but I have heard other prices. Oh and one more thing. I want a pug PUPPY! Thanks for your help.

Answer
It depends on the breeder. Sometimes breeders sell as low as $600, but I've always heard for a good purebred you need to pay as much as any dog - $800 or $800+
There is no real standard for dog breeds, so the price varies based on the breeder :)

Supplies also only vary based on the dog's size...Let us see:
Bed ~ $30-$100 (I'm pretty sure you can get cheap ones, but these tend to last longer and have the best comfy quality)
Food ~ $20-$70
Toys ~ It varies exponentially. Some toys cost a ton, others don't cost much at all. It really depends on the place you buy it from and the type of toy.
Crate ~ $20-$$$ ($20 is pretty much the cheapest, but people pay a TON for good crates. It ranges into the hundreds.)
Harness ~ $40 (Pugs need harnesses. Leashes are too much pull for them. They make pugs not be able to breath all that well.)
Dog Bowl ~ $20-$60 (I use a regular, cheap kitchen bowl. The expensive ones are outside my price range.)
Dog Shampoo ~ $4-$10
Treats ~ $5-$20
Dog brushes ~ $3-$10
This is based on my personal experience. It might be more/less expensive for you!

For an 8 week old pup: $52 for the first shots and checkup. $42 for the next 2 shots and check. $100 for the neuter or $112 for a spay. (Once again, an experience...might be more/less for you!)

Talk to your vet about bills after that. It also depends on if your dog gets hurt, ect. because vet bills vary depending on the emergency.

Hope I helped! ~ Good Luck! ~ <3

I have a 40 lb pitbull that I would love to be able to take on the subway. Trouble is, there are no carriers large enough for her. The only one I've found is $400, which is absurd. Has anyone found a soft duffel-style or even a suitcase-style carrier that can handle my 27" long pet?

Answer
You plan to carry a 40 lb dog onto the subway? WHY? The only reason you should do that is if it's absolutely necessary, like taking it to the vet. I hope you're a man, because a 40 pound dog plus a 10-20 lb kennel is gunna be pretty difficult to carry around.
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3196957&lmdn=Pet+Size&ab=pt_crates_medium this "carrier" needs to be large enough for the dog to stand and turn around in.

How much do you spend on your dog a month?

Mika

I want to know how much you spend on your dog a month or a year.

I adopted a dog a month ago and I have already spent almost $400 on his food, equitments, vet visits and grooming... It's a lot! I really want to know how much other pet owners are spending on their furry babies.

Answer
We just adopted two puppies who "bestowed the gift of Parvo" upon us, so in the past month, adoption fees + vet visits + food + crates + toys = about $1500.

We also have two medium-sized adult dogs who only cost about $60 a month for food/toys.

What makes a better pet, rabbit or ferret?

Kamryn's M

I'm trying to decide whats right for me. I love how lop-ear rabbits are and how cute they are, but since I can remember I wanted a ferret. I love how energetic and playful they are. Please HELP?

Answer
Both rabbits and ferrets live to about the same age so it is really up to you to make up your own mind.

I hand the following out to anyone who buys any of my ferrets. I live in the UK, I exhibit, judge and breed ferrets, also ferret cross European polecat hybrids, I got my first pet ferret and pet rabbit over 50 years ago, when I was a child.

Behaviour of all ferrets Ferrets can sleep up to 20 hours a day and must have a playtime of at least 2-3 hours a day. They can be extremely active during play, dashing up and down stairs and around your home like a mad things, play fights and mock battles are all part of their play.

Feeding Ferrets
Ferrets are carnivores and therefor they should be fed on a raw meat diet, correctly fed ferrets should never need hairball prevention (Ferret Lax).
My ferrets get whole poultry, pigeons, pheasants and waterfowl all with feathers and on the bone also whole rabbits in the fur on the bone. Bovine liver in small amounts, sheep and pigs heart lungs wind pipe and spleen of which is all minced together then fed to the ferrets, they also get diced poultry turkey and pork also beef / pork and turkey mince, the mince can also contain some fish without the bones.
As a treat my ferret like a small amounts of apple and some of them like melon skins

Housing
Almost any type of cage can be used for ferrets, from rabbit hutches, poultry arks and dog crates to home made hutches. For their own safety all ferrets should be put in some sort of cage while the owners are not at home.

Bedding / Care
I use shredded paper, as I find that changed weekly it cuts down on the ferrets normal body odder. Ferrets should never need a bath and if the owner thinks their ferret needs a bath I surgest that they find another type of pet. Once you have bather your ferret the ouder will come back and it will be twice the strenght it was before you bathed it.

Exercise
Ferrets like to have a playtime of at least 2-3 hours a day, although mine can be found to be awake when ever anyone is around. Mine also love to go for walks with me and my dogs around the village.

Health
Some people say that one reason they have hobs castrated is to stop the sexual frustration of the adolescence ferrets.
Then others say about the smell of the ferrets as another reason for having hobs castrated As for the smell of these young ferrets it is a great smell and anyone who thinks differently should think about weather they should have ferrets or maybe they would be better off looking after some inanimate object such as a stone, hence so sexual frustration or smell.
Question;
Would you castrate the male family members because of B.O. or their feet smell? So why do it to ferrets!
Correctly fed ferrets should never need hairball prevention (Ferret Lax). Trimming Nails Sit down and lay your rabbit on its back that way you can get to all 4 feet put your thumb on the sole of the foot with your fingers around the back of the foot and press your thumb down to show the nails take 1/3 rd of the nail off
Healthy ferrets can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Spaying and neutering is not a good thing for ferrets as this leads to Adrenal cancer
Ferrets can catch human flu.
Sneezing and coughing, Runny nose and eyes (discharge should be clear), Fever over 104° F, Lethargy, Wheezing, Diarrhea, Loss of appetite.

Breeding / Sexing
With the male the penis is where the bellybutton usually is and with the female both anus and vagina are just under her tail

Ferret History
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferret - Originally, in 1758 the domestic ferret was classified as a separate genus and was called Mustela Furo. It was believed the steppe polecat to be the closest to the domestic ferret. Then, in 1970, through the examination of external chromosome shape, it was determined that the European polecat (Mustela putorius) was closer to the domestic ferret than the steppe polecat. When this evidence came to light it was decided M. putorius and the domestic ferret were in the same species and the domestic ferret was then renamed Mustela Putorius Furo to distinguish it from the polecat. However, dogs are considered Canis familiars, not Canis lupus familiars which should follow if they are domesticated wolf, Canis lupis. The 1828 Webster's Dictionary defines: FER'RET, n. 1. An animal of the genus Mustela, or Weasel kind, about 14 inches in length, of a pale yellow colour with red eyes.

In 1999 a group of British scientists examined DNA structure and could not make any further determination. So at this point in time we simply do NOT know, with certainty, the ancestor of the domestic ferret. The theories given here are the best possible with the available information. If new evidence is introduced, adjustments may be made. Right now, our best guess is that the domesticated ferret is a descendant of the European polecat.
Here in the UK adults can weigh from 1lb to 7lbs, and can vary according to the time of year up to as much as 50% plus or minus.

Ferrets were imported to the USA in the late 18th century. In the mid 19th century ferrets (then known as fitch) were bred for their fur and even as late as the 1980's fitch fur farming was widespread. Only recently has this practice fallen out of favour with most countries.

Ferrets as pets in the USA
In the United States, ferrets were relatively rare pets until the 1980s. Dr. Wendy Winstead, a veterinarian and former folk singer who had her first ferret in 1969, sold ferrets to a number of celebrities including Dick Smothers and David Carradine while making television appearances on programs such as the David Letterman Show with ferrets in the 1980s[13], writing books and promoting them until her death in the 1990s from cancer. A government study by the California State Bird and Mammal Conservation Program found that by 1996, approximately 800,000 or so domestic ferrets were likely being kept as pets in the United States.

Ferreting
Rabbiting For hundreds of years, the main use of ferrets was for hunting, or ferreting. With their long, lean build and curious nature, ferrets are very well equipped for getting down holes and chasing rodents and rabbits out of their burrows. Caesar Agustus sent ferrets (named "viverrae" by Plinius ) to the Balearic Islands to control the rabbit plagues in 6 BC. They are still used for hunting in some countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, where rabbits are considered a plauge species. However, the practice is illegal in several countries where it is feared that ferreting could unbalance the ecology.
In England, in 1390, a law was enacted restricting the use of ferrets for hunting to those of substantial means: "...it is ordained that no manner of layman which hath not lands to the value of forty shillings a year (the equivalent of about £1,000 in today's money) shall from henceforth keep any greyhound or other dog to hunt, nor shall he use ferrets, nets, heys, harepipes nor cords, nor other engines for to take or destroy deer, hares, nor conies, nor other gentlemen's game, under pain of twelve months' imprisonment." Ferrets were first introduced into the New World in the 17th century, and were used extensively from 1860 until the start of World War 2 to protect grain stores in the American West..

Showing
The Hobby of Breeding & Showing Ferrets is called 'The Fancy'. Almost every weekend, all over the country, ferret shows are taking place. Many are Local Ferret Clubs holding their single-day shows in places such as Village Halls and Scout Huts, others are two-day Championship Shows held in Sports Centres and School Halls.

My Experience
Since having a brain injury I had to cut down on pets from over the 200 that I owned, I have only kept a few Ferrets and European hybrids, Rabbits, Dogs and Rosella Parakeets.
After keeping young ferret hobs form the early 70 'before that I only ever kept jills', I have found that once the young hobs reach adolescence they will try to bully the rest of the group and they soon find out that the older hobs will not stand for their bullying ways. Ferret hobs can be brats when they come into their first season, but after that they just become friends. Being a ferret owner for 50+ years, with 12 ferrets at the moment and my oldest ferrets have lived to 13+ the following group is not just about ferrets, we have members who own all sorts of pets,. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/intact-ferrets/
ALWAYS seek veterinary advice if your pet seems unwell in any way, and research new information as thoroughly as possible then take it to your vet for their opinion before acting on it.

How do you ship a horse across the world? How much would it cost to ship a horse from California to England?

blahblahbl

Just wondering. Is it like dangerous to ship horses?? Are they on an airplane or boat?

Answer
From the U.S., horses are usually flown from Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Lexington, New York or sent via trailer to Canada and flown from there. They are loaded into an aluminum crate that is very similar to a straight load horse trailer or a semi-trailer. Each crate can hold three horses so shipping three at a time is the most economical method. A handler usually travels in the crate with them in the area in front that would be the manger in a walk-through two-horse trailer or the space between rows in a semi-trailer. Once they're loaded the crate is placed in the cargo area of a plane using a fork-lift. The previous poster is totally wrong about quarantine in the UK - even dogs no longer do 6 months under the PETS scheme. The horse usually does about a month's quarantine at an approved facility in the US prior to shipping, documents are then issued and the horse is transported to the UK. The horse has to have a passport to enter the UK which is a recent thing. Post transport quarantine in the UK is for up to a month at an approved facility. The total cost just for transportation, quarantine, paperwork etc is around $10,000 plus the cost of the horse.

Shipping a puppy from Nebraska to Houston Hobby Airport?

RM

Does anyone know where in the Houston Hobby airport your pick up shipped animals and the process?

Answer
Call the specific airline and ask for their policies. You might also be able to look them up online. When I shipped a dachshund through Hobby years ago, he arrived on the baggage line (in his crate). Watch the weather though; they won't fly them if its too hot (specific temps are given in the regulations, it can vary depending on the airline) and it can't be too hot anywhere the plane touches down. Look for a direct flight preferably counter to counter. Bring your photo I.D. a secondary form of identification and be at the airport at least an hour before the plane is due to land. Again depending on the airline, they may hold your pup until he recovers from the flight. When you arrive at the airport, go to the baggage counter, tell them you're waiting on a dog and if your puppy doesn't show up ask someone to go check for you in person. Keep asking until they do it. Bring some cleanup supplies, wipes and towels, a leash, collar and plenty of water.

Hi, we are having ALOT of problems at home between our dogs. We have: 11 year old spayed female pit bull - K-C
6 year old female spayed female border collie mix - Tippy
4 year old intact female great Pyrenees mix - Izzy
9 month old Maltipoo intact male (for sale) - Billy
4 month old male red heeler intact.- Rocky

My dogs are Rocky and K-C. My moms dogs are Billy, Izzy and tippy.
The 1st problem is that Tippy constantly growls, if the other dogs walk by her kennel her food, when she is laying down and they go around her, if the is getting petted or even just walk in the room she will put her head down and growl. My mom lets her get away with this and wont say anything, she will even go as far as biting K-C heels when she walks, what Tippy does this K-C bites back at her, when mom breaks up the fight she yells at my dog for attacking her, and while mom yells at my dog Tippy keeps biting her heels.

2nd problem: Billy grabs all the bones in the house and puts them on the couch. When Rocky wants one, he will attack and bite his nose, Billy Takes them right from Rockys mouth. When Rocky Growls at Billy, mom yells at him. But then she does nothing when the little dog bites my dog.

Problem 3: The great pyrannes has proved herself un trust worthy around animals as she has killed a little dog and killed a cat, both of whom she knew for years. Yet, mom still insists she is "harmless"

None of moms dogs are obidiance trained, leash trained or have had ANY socalization. They growl at people and attack other dogs, and they are either inside in a kennel or outside in a kennel.

My dogs have formal obidiance and have CGC and other awards. The pupps is still learning. They come to calgary and have been from coast to coast and from north canada to florida.

Please help.
Billy is from a puppy mill. My mom tries to rescue dogs. I dont agree with it. It causes problems. That is how she got her 3 dogs. Both of mine came from good breeders.

Im not a bad owner.
I take care of my dogs, 2 4 hour walks a day. Raw diet, lots of attention.
Mom doesnt do anything with my dogs. I dont do anything with her dogs.

its not my fault her dogs are the way they are.
i cant neuter the heeler. The herding club in our area doesnt alow it. As does the breeder we bought him from cause she has half rights.

Answer
Asides from kicking your Mom and her dogs out (that's a joke by the way!) you need to put some obedience into her dogs! She needs to step up to the plate and realize this also and contribute to their training or give her dogs up to someone who will put the training into them. Or even though they are not your dogs, you could put some training into them. Definitely aside from getting rid of them the only solution I can see would be to train them and make sure they get their physical and mental stimulation, and sit down with your Mom and lay it down straight out how she needs to stop being naive and get training into her dogs. She needs to be correcting her dogs when they are out of line, and perhaps look to a proffesional dog trainer for a good base obedience and then keep it up. From what I get out of what you wrote she will reprimand your dogs more then hers?! And her dogs seem to be causing the most problems? I can imagine that this is causing alot of tension between the two of you also?!

MY PUPPY?? Home alone!!?

haloween g

My puppy very new to the world is soo young and, my family and I are going to Calgary tommorrow, there's no one to take care of her and she is too young to stay in a crate for 10 hours. What should I do?? Should I stay home, because we're going my best friends family that I haven't seen in FOREVER, and I'm really excited to see her.
We cant take her to Calgary cause where would she stay?
Calgary is about 24 hours away from us, we couldn't take her with us she'd get car sick!!

Answer
Well, there are a few solutions to your dillema. I am a fellow dog-owner and understand your fear. Since it's not very nice to put her in a crate for that long, and she can't have free reign of your house, you can A) Give her some part of the house (e.g. a somewhat small room, that she can roam around in) so she's not trapped, B) Take her to Calgary, if possible, C) Take her to the kennel D) Leave her home with a friend or E) worst case scenario, miss out on your Calgary trip.

I would highly disregard the kennel, unless it's a place that they let her be with other dogs. (PetSmart has a really nice kennel), although most vets provide this service.

Also, on an unrelated note, I hope you have fun seeing your friend!

What suggestions do seasoned dog owners have to offer?

dog crates discount on Dog Crates for travel and Home.
dog crates discount image

Coco

I already know all the basics i need to know for getting my new puppy like making sure it gets its shots and de-wormings, having a crate for him, toys to play with, giving him plenty of water and making sure he eats enough a day, giving him plenty of exercise, etc. But i'm interested in any tips and helpful hints that will help make life a little easier for my pup and me. Anything you may have learned throughout the years.
Thanks (:

Answer
Dont take your animal to dog parks

Dont take your animal to places were large numbers of animals have been, example petsmart, petco and other places like this.
(You never knwo if other animals are utd on shots)

Always keep your animal on a leash regardless of where you are b/c ppl can sue you without a leash.

Always carry an extra poop bag with you on walks and a treat for the pup

Freeze teething toys for extra teething relief

Kong are great toys that work the mind of your animal. You can fill these with peanut butter and freeze them for a treat that will keep your dog happy for 45 min- to an hour.

Don't use discount clinics! (They killer one of my dogs due to improper care)

Always make sure that your animal wears their tag on their collor just in case they get off the leash.

Keep good records of the vet and shots that your animal has received! ( Should you ever need to board the animal they will require these!)

Yogart with an animals food helps bacterial infections and digestion.

If your animal has food allergies you will need a non- grain based food with the first ingredent being non- grain... example Beef... chicken,.. rice... ( Normally organic food lines)

Pet Tab vitamins are the BEST vitamins I have found on the market!!!!

Remember that training takes time.( It took 2 years and my dog is still learning to listen to new commands) But don't give up! Your animal loves you and wants to please you.. but sometimes acciedents happen

How much does a crate cost?

meggie Xox

my dog is small only weighs 4-9 pounds and is a morkie (malteese and yorkie)

Answer
It depends on what style and quality of crate you want.

For an already crate trained dog you might get mesh crate.

For travel, you'd need a special soft-sided carrier that fits under the seat on the airplane.

For use in a car, choose a special seat belt instead. They are safer than crates. If you must use a crate in the car, choose a plastic one. They are less likely to injure a dog if they break on impact.

For home, for general use and for crate training (which is what I assume you want), choose between a plastic (airline) crate or a wire crate.

If your dog is shy or barky, go for the plastic--it's more den-like and calming. If your dog is confident and curious, and/or you enjoy seeing him from anywhere in the room, choose a wire crate--it has better ventilation and a better view.

Here's a link to a good, middle quality plastic crate:
http://www.upco.com/vari-kennel-small-top-handle-olive-color
That one is $38.95. Shipping is $5.50.

Here's a link to a good, middle quality wire crate:
http://www.upco.com/general-cage-folding-cage-gold-side-door-only-small
That one is $79. Shipping will actually be a bit less, $4.00.

With this company the cost of shipping goes down the more your order totals. You may find other online stores or catalogs with lower prices, but double check the shipping. That's usually where they get you, especially on crates. Usually UPCO has the best prices in my experience.

You can find similar crates at your local pet store, usually for a lot more. You can find cheaper crates, both in price and quality, at discount stores like Walmart.

Make sure the crate actually fits your dog. I have a crate that claims to be suited for a Great Dane, but it is actually too small for my German Shepherd.

Your dog should be able to stand naturally (head up) without bumping his head. He should be able to turn around easily, and lie flat on his side with his legs extended. It should be no larger than that if you intend to use it for crate training.

Over-sized crates permit an untrained dog to set aside a section of the crate for toileting. A crate that is just big enough to comfortably lie in discourages crate soiling because dogs don't like to soil where they sleep.

is a dog crate big enough for a rabbit?

dog crates big on ... - products - Folding Fabric Pet Crate-Dog Carrier-Oxford 600D-Beige

Q. I'm (hopefully) getting a rabbit, and I want to know if a dog crate is a big enough cage for it. I know that generally store bought cages for rabbits aren't big enough, and I can't build it, and it needs to be a bit smaller, because my room is quite tiny. Do you think a dog crate would be big enough?

Answer
wellll it is big enough (depending on the breed of the bunny) but i would advise you to get a proper cage designed for rabbits. they have deep trays on the bottom you see for putting hay and sawdust in also all the toys a bunny could dream of. the bottom or dog cages are quite shallow so and poop or peepee will just come riiight over the edge and cover your floor.
good luck with you're bunny

How large should my dogs crate be?

chris

I have a German Shepherd puppy. Videos that I have been watching say that I should get a dog crate wherein my dog can stand sit and turn. I've been thinking that if I do get such a size, my dog's growth will stop because of the crate. Also, German Shepherds are large bred dogs. What will happen when it grows up? I find it too expensive to buy a crate everytime the dog grows bigger.

Answer
It will not restrict his size. He might be uncomfortable in a crate that is too small AND you should never leave him in there for too long. My bullmastiff has the largest crate we could buy (even through special order). He now is too big for it, but still sleeps in it every night with the door open...voluntarily. I would never leave him in it for long, but if I can't put him outside when I leave for short periods of time due to weather, etc, I will close the door. He can still stand up and turn around in it, but I would never leave him in there for more than an hour or two...and he LIKES the cage.

As far as restricting growth...as I said before, it won't. My dog is now over 100 lbs...I do not think his growth has been restricted in the slightest.

Buy the largest one you can buy...german shepherds are not as big as bullmastiffs, but they are still very large. If he seems to like it more cozy, divide off part of the crate so the area is smaller while he is still little. My dog didn't care wither way.

My mom takes her dogs out in her car is extremely filthy with dirt marks and smells like wet dog. The mats are stained dark brown. I have a steam vac and it might not cut it, or might take forever. Also she spilled ice cream on the trunk mat. I need a good list of products to clean the vinyl, leather, fabric mats, windows, headlights, taillights, tires, rims, hand vacuum or whatever to make the car really clean. Thanks.

Answer
Those SUV's can get dirty I recommend spending the money for professional detailing in instances of gross interior neglect. Then go to pet smart and get canine crates or wire cages that fit the rear of the Lexus so people will want to ride in the seats again. Lexol makes saddle soap leather cleaners and conditioners Self Spray car wash soap and rinse all the floor mats shampoo with the steam cleaner the floors polish and wax the exterior and shine up the windows put new wiper blades in at this time. leave the under hood to some mechanic. Armor-all the tires and vinyl around the seat backs and door panels but just wash the dash and towel dry. Shine on dash reflects in the glass. Get one of those cans of car fresnener at Lowe's on the ends of the front isles by scent labs "aroma pots" lasts up to sixty days Jasmine, Mango Tangerine all good on top of dog smell.

I can't catch my dog when he escapes can anyone help me with tips?

Susan D

My dog is 9 months old and if he is able to get out he runs into the street. I am afraid he will get out and get hurt. He almost got hit by a car and i realized this is a serious problem. Can anyone give me tips on how to train him not to run away?

Answer
You might want to get a dog run. They are bigger than a crate and provide safety when your not around. They cannot jump out of them if you get one with a top. Work with him everyday to establish boundaries. He clearly does not know where he is supposed to be. You as the OWNER need to show and work on this. Very soon may I add. Is he digging to get out? How is he getting out of your yard? Fix that problem. If he is diggin you can use Cayenne pepper to stop the digging. Start by filling in any holes with dirt and sprinkle the Cayenne pepper on the places he likes to dig. This may help! It helped me with my 3 month old puppy. She always wanted into my neighbors yard. She no longer digs there or any where else I put the pepper! Good luck and I hope you can fix this before your precious dog gets hurt! Check out Lowe's or Home Depot they have dog runs already in packages!

I just got 2 labradoodles that are 1 1/2 years old. They lived in a puppy mill. They are VERY shy and skittish. How do I get them used to being inside and being loved?

Answer
A puppy is like a baby. He will relieve himself anywhere, anytime. Because a newly adopted adult dog is unfamiliar with your home, he may not understand where he should "go"! Housetraining, or teaching your dog to go outside to relieve himself, is an important lesson your dog must learn.
It is up to you, the new parent, to housetrain your new puppy or dog with patience, love and understanding.
CRATE TRAINING
In the wild, wolves live in a den or cave. It is important the entire wolf pack keep this area clean. The same idea works with your family pet. Your dogâs crate is his home, his bedroom. It is likely that your dog will not like to soil his bed. Therefore, he will wait until he is let out to do his business.
HOUSETRAINING WITH YOUR CRATE
On average, puppies can hold their bladders one hour for every month they have been alive, plus one hour. For example, if you have a three month old puppy, he can wait 3 + 1 = 4 hours. If you work longer than this, the best solution is to have someone (a neighbour, a relative, a dog walker) come in at an appropriate time to let your dog out.

100 PER CENT SUPERVISION
Supervision is the key to housetraining! While you are at home, your dog must be supervised. Whether you are watching television, making dinner, on the phone or on the computer, your puppy must be watched. While it sounds like an impossible task, it isnât. Keeping the crate in a social part of the house makes it easier. Using a house lead â a small, thin lead with a little clip on it â also helps immensely. Outside, you put a lead on your dog so you can control him. If the lead is removed after returning home, control is lost. For example, when watching television, have the lead tied to a couch leg. Your dog can have his blanket and toys with him. Heâll feel safe and comfortable. The majority of accidents happen when your pup wanders off and you havenât noticed. You donât want him to sneak off into the kitchen and find a puddle a short time later. If your pup is kept from wandering, the possibility of an accident is diminished because he will not eliminate where he is sitting. 100 per cent supervision means ensuring your dog is playing with you, in his crate, outside or on his house lead.

SCHEDULING
In the morning, take your dog outside. He should urinate and possibly have a bowel movement. Spend about five to seven minutes with him and then bring him in. Do not play with him yet. Feed him breakfast, either in the crate or with the lead, and supervise it. If your pup did not have a bowel movement earlier, take him back outside about 15 minutes after he has eaten. Use the lead to keep your pup moving along while outside. Otherwise, he may start sniffing, stopping and playing to avoid the job at hand. You can say âhurry upâ and your dog will begin to associate these words with the task at hand. Praise him excessively when he has eliminated. Bring him back in the house and place him in his crate if you are going to work. Continue to supervise him with the crate or the lead if you are home. When returning after being out, go directly to the crate, let him out, praise him and put him back in. Feed him his meal, take him outside 15 minutes after he has eaten, praise him after he eliminates, and bring him back in. Continue to follow the same steps consistently.

While you are home, you should take your pup outside on a regular basis. Even if your pup is in a crate or on a house lead, he still needs the opportunity to eliminate. Also, be careful what you wish for! A pup who barks to go outside may be cute and clever now. However, you must try not to fall into the habit of leaping up every time your dog wants in or out. It is a very submissive gesture on your part. Have your pup wait a moment or two.

Setting up a schedule is also a good idea. If your pup is under four months of age, take him out for five minutes every hour on the hour. If your pup is over four months old, take him out every second hour on the hour. The schedule will help you remember when to take him out. Go out for five minutes only. It provides the opportunity to eliminate even if your pup may not need to go. Take your dog out after active play and also after napping. If an accident occurs, you may have forgotten to take him out .

FEEDING TIME
Having a puppy drink a lot of water and then placing him in his crate is much more unkind than letting him be a bit thirsty for an hour or two. Adult dogs should have access to drinking water at all times. However, this is not the case for untrained pups. Most parents will not allow their children to drink a big glass of water before going to bed. Avoid setting your pup up for failure. Restrict his water intake to three or four drinks daily and make sure you remove the water dish about three hours before bedtime. This will help your dog sleep more comfortably.

If it is a hot evening, supply your pup with a few ice cubes. They will enter your dogâs system at a slower pace. When feeding your pup, provide a high-quality food that is a good source of protein. The food must be concentrated so your puppyâs body doesnât require much of it. If you feed less, your puppy eliminates less. Food is directly related to how well puppies do in their housetraining.

EXERCISE
It is important that your pup gets a lot of exercise, especially while crate training. You can play fetch, chase or hide and seek in your home. You can call âcomeâ at the same time to provide further training. Anyway you do it, your pup needs to be able to run and play.

How do you get over a dog that's only been with you for 2 1\2 years but is so special to you?

Q. My dog bit me and I have to put him down. He bit me 4 times in the face and is 4 years old. I know we're doing the right thing but it just doesn't feel right. I am 10 years old and very upset even though we're getting a puppy soon. HELP!!!
We adopted him when he was 2 so its hard to teach an old dog new tricks be we'll put a lot of time and effort into our new puppy.

Answer
Training begins in the hands of the owner.
Its unfortunate, that your dog never had any proper training. His behavior was ignored and never stopped when he was a pup. PLEASE, unless your family is willing to become educated on proper puppy training and dislipine, DON'T get another dog! It takes a commitment from ALL family members. Raising a puppy takes a great deal of work. There is beginner obedience classes to attend, crate training, house-breaking, leash-training, and so much more!
I am truly sorry for your dog. :{

How do I teach a new dog to get along with our dog?

noname

We have adopted our cousin's dog, (for serious health reasons, he had to give her away). We have a dog 2 years older than her. They are both mellow, laid-back dogs EXCEPT when I come in the door, the new dog kinda goes after our dog to get her away from me. Any suggestions until I sign her up for obedience classes?

Answer
Choosing a housemate that will be compatible with your current dog is an important consideration for anyone thinking about expanding their family. Before bringing home that cute little puppy or adorable mutt from the local shelter take some time to evaluate the personality, training and history of your current dog(s) and the one that you are considering. Some thoughtful reflection now can spare you unnecessary headaches later.

Choosing The Right Pet For The Right Reasons
If your dog is active and outgoing, adopt a dog with similar qualities. If your dog is quiet and more reserved, look for a dog that will compliment this type of lifestyle. Try to find out as much information from the adopting agency as possible. Most shelters and rescue groups have some form of temperament testing used to evaluate the dogs in their charge. Look to see that the adoptable dog has been around other dogs before. Most dogs have to âlearnâ how to get along with each other.

If the dog you are considering has not been socialized properly, it might be best to consider another dog with better social skills. The same goes for your own dog. Even though we tend to think otherwise, itâs generally not a good idea to get your current dog a âpetâ. If and when you do decide to bring a second (or third or fourth) home, make sure you are doing it for you!

Steps For Introducing New Dogs To Current Family Dogs

1) Donât force your âhome teamâ dog to protect their home turf. If the dogs meet in a neutral location, they are less likely to view the other as an intruder. Start in a neutral zone such as a neighborâs fenced in yard or enclosed park that your resident dog has not visited. Each dog should be on a leash and handled by a separate person.

2) Positive reinforcement works. You want your dogs to have positive experiences with each other right from the start. Let your dogs sniff each other and greet each other normally. Give them positive reinforcement through calm verbal affirmations. After letting them play for a while, put both dogs in a âsitâ or âstayâ, then let them interact again. Finally, take them on walks together, allowing them to sniff each other along the way.

3) Play close attention the both dogâs body posture. Watch out for body postures that show a defensive response. Defensive body postures include hair standing up the back, teeth-baring, deep growls, a stiff legged gait or a prolonged stare. If a dog goes into these postures, immediately switch into positive reinforcement mode and get your dog to follow your teachings. Let your dogs interact again, shorten the distance between the two.

4) Once your dogs seem to be tolerating each other, itâs time to bring them home. Whether they ride in the same car or not is really a judgment call on how well you think they are getting along and the size of your car or SUV. We have found that allowing the new dog to enter the home first can reduce the chance of your family dog feeling that they need to âprotect their turfâ.

Special Advice For Helping New Puppies Get Along With Adult Dogs

As anyone with a puppy can tell you, they can often be a handful. Also, because puppies are still learning, they usually wind up bothering adult dogs to no end. Puppies simply have trouble recognizing that their actions are bothering adult dogs. Most adult dogs with good temperaments will growl or snarl at recklessly playful puppies in order to set boundaries of acceptable behavior. This is normal and is actually a positive thing. However, never allow a puppy and an adult dog to be left alone together, for the safety of both dogs. Also give your adult dog plenty of time away from the puppy, and try to give them some quality time alone with you and your family whenever time permits.

Never allow your puppy and the adult dog to eat out of the same dog bowl, as this may lead to resource guarding. Feeding each dog in a separate dog crate is a great way to keep food fights to a minimum. This is also true if you give your dogs raw bones or chews. Good luck Ponygirl I hope this helps you.

How long can a dog hold their bladder?

dog crates 42 on Details about 42

I'm trying to convince my parents to let us get a dog, but one of their concerns is that it would be alone in the house for about 7 and 1/2 hours during the week. Is this too long to ask the dog, possibly a lab or golden retriever, to hold their bladder, and would it be cruel to leave them alone for so long on the weekdays?

Answer
As a puppy YES it is too long but you can use a crate to contain the puppy where you have newspaper put down and its bedding in the back and if desperate the puppy will wee on thee paper,,that is your only answer.
Adult dogs varies from dog to dog but l can assure you l could leave my dogs for 18 hours straight and they would not wee in the house but than they are show dogs and obedience dogs but that does not matter they are adults not pups.so recommend to your parents the idea of the crate and if you are getting the above breed you need a 36in to 42 crate which is the fold down variety and nearly everyone uses them for house training pups or containing dogs in certain situations.
Good luck hope you get a puppy as you will get so much joy out of it

Can I still potty train my dog? & How?

Julissa

My dog is 6 years old (42 human years) and I wanted to know if it's still possible for me to potty train him. And how?

Answer
Yes, my rescue group house trains adult dogs all the time. You treat him just as you would a new puppy;
1) Watch the dog carefully, to avoid indoor accidents,
2) Take out frequently (every 2 hr.) to attempt to potty,
3) Praise for all outdoor efforts, put all accidents OUTSIDE in your potty area or leave weighted down paper towels used to clean up urine in that location.
4) Confine the dog to one cleanable floor or crate, when inside. Crate training can help SPEED housebreaking.
5) Do NOT give the unhousebroken dog the freedom to roam around the house, at will.

I'm thinking more like gardens or something...

Answer
Gardens, eh? Not many of those, in overdeveloped Orange County.

The only gardens I can think of are:

Orange County Arboretum, Fullerton
Huntington Library and Gardens, San Marino
LA County Arboretum, Arcadia
Dscanso Gardens, La Canada
Santa Ana Zoological Gardens, Santa Ana

My personal favs are the Huntington Library and Descanso Gardens.

As for other things, you can try:

Disneyland: The Happiest Place on Earth. Half a billion visitors canât be wrong. (Sometimes it seems all at once)

Universal Studios: A theme park that grew out of a studio tour. Check out eBay. You can find some discounted tickets there. And Universal City Walk is a fun place to hang out in the evening after your day inside the park.

Hollywood: Hollywood Boulevard is ready for its close-up, thanks to years of urban renewal and renovation. Enjoy the Walk of Fame, Entertainment Museum, Mann's Theatre and more. You can see a lot for free. I have also added the Hollywood & Highland complex to my top ten list⦠it has lots of shops and restaurants, and the Kodak Theater (home of the Academy Awards). I like the El Capitan theater, because it has been restored to its former glory, unlike the Chinese, which was essentially gutted and turned into a multiplex.

Rodeo Drive, 90210: Packed with exclusive shops, full of gawkers. They all came to enjoy the excess. Free, unless you intend to buy something.

Venice Beach: Los Angeles kitsch and over-the-top culture at its best.
Here you'll find Muscle Beach, street performers and tacky shops galore.
Fun, VERY interesting, but I avoid it after dark, when it gets a little TOO interesting for my taste. And it's a short bike ride from:

Santa Monica Beach and Pier: Great beach scene and a classic seaside amusement park, complete with antique carousel that has been in a lot of TV and movies. (The Sting and "Three's Company" come immediately to mind).
After visiting the pier, you can ride a bike south a couple miles to Venice Beach.

Santa Monica Third Street Promenade - Downtown Santa Monica's shopping promenade is often the scene of movie star-sightings. Just a short walk from the Santa Monica Pier.

Sunset Boulevard: Perhaps one of the world's most famous streets, it began as a route between the stars' posh neighborhoods and the Hollywood studios. It runs from downtown to the ocean, passing through the "Sunset Strip" on its way. It makes for a fun drive. Along the way, you see a lot of different neighborhoods. Hollywood, West Hollywood, Bel Air, and Pacific Palisades. When you get to the ocean, stop at Gladstone's for Fish.

Queen Mary: Once the largest ship afloat, she's been docked in Long Beach for longer than she sailed, and her elegance never fails to impress. Free to visit. You can actually stay on board, for a price.

Farmers Market and The Grove - A new shopping complex right next to a Los Angeles landmark, The Grove and Farmers Market coexist. Enjoy a movie or shopping, then take the trolley to the Farmers Market for lunch or dinner.
Farmer's Market is right next to CBS, so walk across the lot to see if they are taping "The Price is Right". You might even get in.

Griffith Park - Home of the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park Observatory, Travel Town, the Greek Theatre, and Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage.

Getty Museum - The Getty's architecture is so beautiful that it keeps me fascinated. No matter whether you like their art or architecture better (or maybe you'll just enjoy the view), the Getty is sure to please. Free.

Attend a TV taping - You can get free tickets at audiencesunlimited.com, or see the booth at Universal City walk. It's very interesting to see a show being taped. The most popular, by far, is the tonight show. Check the NBC web site for all the details there.

Places to eat:
In-N-Out Burger: Multiple locations, best burger in LA, ask anyone.
Pinkâs Hot Dogs: 709 N. La Brea, just north of Melrose. Might see a celebrity.
Tommyâs Chili Burgers: Look for the shack, an LA tradition. Original location at Beverly & Rampart, a couple miles west of downtown.
Canterâs Deli: 419 N. Fairfax, between Beverly & Melrose. Near CBS, might spot a celebrity.
Phillippeâs: 1001 N. Alameda. Great roast beef sandwiches. Near Union Station, Olvera Street. Watch the mustard, itâs hot.

Places to Stay:
In Hollywood, I recommend the Hollywood Celebrity Hotel and the Farmer's Daughter Hotel.
In Anaheim, I recommend the HoJo Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. If you want to splurge and make this a most memorable trip, stay at Disneyâs Grand Californian. You get the full Disney experience.
In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced.

any suggestions for a good boarding kennel in orange county, cheap but good.?

Q. I just moved to OC and am staying with a friend who lives in a manufactured home. I haven't found a place yet and while my current situation is fine for me my dogs are stressing and confined. I would like a place where they will feel love and be able to run and jump and play for about a week until I find a home.

Answer
you can call Signal Hill Animal Hospital at 562-597-5533, they're located in Long Beach ca. They board animals for a low daily fee - for extended stays they give discounts. I have taken my dog & cats there now for close to 9 yrs now. I once had to board my beloved cat there for 3 weeks. They give great, loving attention and quality food daily - they also have an exercise area where they let the dogs run and play with other dogs! If you dont do it there - if you ask they can provide you w/names or ph. #'s of other places. good luck with this.

Yesterday i went to a last hope dog kennel and i found a gorgeous sweet laid back calm dog. He is a staffordshire bull terrier mix with something else. He has a brindle coat but the sad thing is he is going to get put to sleep in 13 days. My dad thinks its gonna run down the street and bite people. He has never seen the dog before. I tried to get him to go look at him but he refuses to. Someone please help me find ways to convince him to let me have him.

Answer
Is he allowing you to get a dog of any kind? If he's not convinced at getting a dog then it will be very difficult.

No doubt he's probably concerned about getting a staff cross because of all the negative media. They actually are normally very people friendly and can make fantastic family dogs. I know some people with full staffs and they say they are the most loving dogs they've had and very sweet. Staffs can be very sweet and are adorable.

There is no reason to assume they are going to bite somebody! Most staffs wouldn't hurt a fly, the problem is when you get the wrong people trying to own them and making them aggressive. This is what all the bad media has done! There are now so many staffs in rescue centres because of all the bad media.

It's like with Rottweilers etc aswell, many people think they are monsters when many, many of them are just big softies and very sweet.

The least your dad could do is meet them for himself and see what they are really like.

You should find as much articles and positive media on the Staffordshire Bull Terrier as possible, there is a lot on the internet and get a book on them so he can read it for himself. If he reads about them he will find that actually they can make very, very loving family dogs. They used to have a great rep as one of the best family dogs.

I'm sure when he reads positive information on the staff, he will come around. Also get him to look at pictures of them and remind him that in a week they will be put to sleep unless you take them in. I'm sure he couldn't resist then, they are so adorable especially when their mouth is open, it looks like they are smiling.

This is what irresponsible and idiotic owners who shouldn't be allowed any kind of dog and the media have done to some dog breeds. Very sad.

How do I get my dog adjusted to being at a kennel while I am away?

I am going on vacation without the family dog this time. She has never been in a kennel. We are flying out of town for three to four days over the holidays but cannot take her on the plane and don't want to drive 15 hours with a dog to our destination. Plus many hotels are not dog-friendly.

Answer
Just inspect the boarding kennel before you leave your dog there, and provided you are happy with what you see (and smell!!) and feel comfortable with the owners etc., go on your holiday! Believe me, she's not going to fade away in 3/4 days in any case, much as she'll certainly miss you. Dogs in kennels actually have loads of things to occupy them - if only the other dogs. But there's always lots going on in kennels and my experience (I've worked in Boarding Kennels) is by the time they are shut in their beds, they zonk out. Many kennels will take their boarders out for walks during their stay too.

If you don't like what you see when you check the place out - move on. Some kennels are better than others, but if the boarders in there when you visit look happy and well cared for (water bowls topped up etc.), you have nothing to worry about. Honestly.

ps If you are seriously worried that your girl won't cope with Boarding, have you considered having a home-sitter in to be with her in your own home?
