(thats wot it wil look like).

Answer
1) I am 16, Dakota and Blade are my mother's dogs, and Chaos is my dog.

2) Yes, I would probably get an extra one :]. I love dogs, and once you figure out what works with the dog, training is a breeze.

3) That's a hard one, I'm not sure how much my mom pays for hers. So far this year I would have to say about $500.00, because I just got him and he is not even 1 year old yet. This year I had to buy a crate, dog toys, food, and vet bills. He is getting nuetered next week so that is going to be about another $200.00

4) My mom's dogs are:
Dakota, female German Shepherd, 5 yrs. old
http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp180/ardb1993/002.jpg

Blade, male Heinz 57, 2 yrs. old.

My dog:
Chaos, male Border Collie mix, 7 months old.

Dog name, I really like Delilah or Daisy.

Good luck!

What are some new, fun things I can do with my dog? :)?

MyPianoKey

I have a 3 year old male shih-tzu, who is my absolute joy, and I want to do new things with him this summer. I'm not asking for typical answers like go to the park, or out for a drive, or to the beach, or a walk in the woods. I'm looking for more along the lines of cute ways to dress him up (without making him boil in the summer sun), or how to make him homemade bandanas and stuff! :D Or make him a homemade doggy bed, things like that! I spoil him! hahahaa!!

Answer
This is a cute website. ***** http://doglinks.co.nz/thingstodo/thingstodo.htm *****

Some other cute ideas are.....
*boy mani and pedis together <3
*dress him up like and have a theme
*if he sleeps in a crate you could decorate it along with the theme of his clothes:)
*homemade doggy treats **** http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art6804.asp (scroll down and click the cookies to see the recipes) *****

Hope this helps...I love my dog so maybe I will try the homemade treat

I found a ferret..now what!?

Soon to be

I was walking my dog at the park today, and out of no where a ferret climbed up my leg (scared the beejesuses out of me) and followed me where ever I went. I took it home with me and called the local animal shelter about the ferret. They say they don't take ferrets, but they'll try and help me in my quest to find the owners (she was wearing a pink collar but had no identification). I have no problem looking after her for a few days, but I have NO clue on how to care for a ferret! Can anyone give me some helpful tips?
PS. She's quite filthy as well. Do I bathe her?
Right now she's just roaming the house. I could put her in my dog's crate but that seems somewhat cruel.

Answer
ferrets are carnivores and not able to digest veg.
i found my ferret years ago, he crossed the road to me.
Bath her with ferret or baby shampoo in warm not too hot or cold water.
Feed dry or wet kitten food, or commercial ferret food. Dog food not enough protein.
She will use a litter tray with paper or wood based litter.
Bed in dog crate if want but they can get through small spaces so she may get out.
Sleep long hours but need plenty exercise.
Ferrets are curious by nature she will have gotten out and wandered off.
I would take her if lived near you but im in glasgow, where are you?
i phoned local vets to see if anyone missing ferret, put posters up in area i found him.
You could also put notices in local newsagents near where you found her.
She probably has a sad owner looking for her.
Despite their smell they are fun, cute and lovely pets.
I love freddy to bits :) x

Do they make extra large crate for big dogs like my dobe?

dog crates big image

==D - - (

My doberman Thor has the largest crate ive found at pet stores and as hes grown to almost a year now, he cant stad up proper in his crate. The top of the crate is about 3 inches from the top of his back. Where can i find a crate big enough for him to be comfortable and stand if hd wants to? Im worried he will develop neck problems. Hes probably 3 to 3'5" on all fours.

Answer
A wide range of crates, some in fashion colors which would be for the owner's benefit not the dog's at it would not care if it as pretty blue or black, for all sizes, including a Doberman and range of prices, some quite reasonable.

http://www.petedge.com/category/Cages-Crates/310.uts

Perhaps you should measure your Doberman again as three foot would make him 36 inches at the withers and the standard for what is a medium size breed is between 27 â 28 inches (Fédération Cynologique Internationale Dobermann standard, size 63 â 68 cm)

What is the best sized crate for my female Sheltie?

Wywy Group

I'm planning to build my own dog crate using wood, and I want to know what's the best size for a full grown female Sheltie (l X w X h). I know that a crate should be just big enough for a dog to stand comfortably, turn round, and lie down, but that doesn't really help me to determine exactly how big I should make my coming Sheltie's crate. Please help? And thanks in advance!

Answer
Why bother? You can get perfectly good crates in any pet shop, and for a dog that small, for under $24:

what do you believe is a reasonable price for a siberian husky puppy?

top dog kennels rescue on AKC Rottweiler Breeder, Rottweiler Puppies for sale, rottie breed ...
top dog kennels rescue image
Q. at first i was considering spending $300 for one because im inlove with the siberian husky breed. i've always loved snow dogs and im a jogger and i love taking walks in the park so he/she and i are like a match made in heaven.

however after looking online i've come across people selling them for $500-$1000

are these reasonable prices? am i naive to try to spend $300? i mean i know they're beautiful dogs but darn!

what's your take?
no i want an active dog not a chuaha or however you spell it.

Answer
A husky for 300 quid is too cheap. Roughly, I'd spend about 600quid + of your looking for a healthy dog that's kennel club registered. A 300 quid pedigree husky is most likely from a puppy mill and had most likely never seen a vet. I'm a breeder in the Republic Of Ireland, not a puppy mill or a BYB but a responsible breeder, we breed our dogs not to make money but to improve the breed. Well as you know dog breeding does make a lot of moment anyways. Me and my family breed our Newfoundlands once a year and we sell their pups for 800 and plus. If you want a good healthy pedigree that come with his vet records , proof that he's registerd with a kennel club , and comes from a good bloodline that's the price your going to have to pay. You could also go to your local rescue shelter and maybe adopt a husky in need of a loving home?

As the other person stated, Siberian huskys can sometimes be quite a handful. They shed pretty much constantly , are escape artists and can actually kill small animals and develope behavioural issues. You can NOT under ANY circumstances let that dog of a lead. They can be very stubborn and have selective hearing and often do not return when called, and if there's a small animal such as a cat or rabbit near by, we'll their toast. You must be really dedicated to the huskys care because you spend so much money on them!

Pedigree dogs come with a hefty price tag, and that's just how it is in afraid of you want a healthy dog from a responsible breeder. Don't pay anything under around 600 quid for a husky as the dog most likely came from a BYB and will probably develop Heath issues in the near future. Our dogs are show quality and so come with a hefty price tag , and that's basically how it is for all pedigree dogs. If you active , have you ever considered some of the other breeds such as the Greyhound or maybe even the Border collie, Australian shepherd and what not? Their not as dear as the Siberian husky and the greyhound is relatively easy to maintain as they have a short coat. If a husky is simply too dear to purchase just imagine all the vet bills and grooming bills on top of that. Maybe you should choose one of the Lower matinance breeds instead?

What can be done to become a reputable breeder?

mandy

IF someone wanted to become a breeder, that's an IF, how would they go about finding out the necissary information and still avoid the accusations of being a BYB wannabe?
I ask because there seems to be a lack of availible websites that are usefull in learning things along the lines of what to do if a puppy get's "stuck" or what normal gestation is and the things involved in the actual act of breeding *mating, gestation, birth, what to do with the pups before they're 6weeks old* There's plenty of information availible on what the qualifications are, but being responsible and having all the vet chacks and stuff is useless when you don't know what a dog should look like when pregnant or how to tell if a puppy "is having problems *not the obvious not breathing type problems, more like a coat not coming in properly*
If the internet fails, and any questions asked are answerd with accusations of irrisponsibility, what's left to do?
I didn't ask about what makes a BYB, I knew that. Most of us do.
Hmmm, let's throw out a situation to any breeder. If someone comes to you asking for you to take them on as an "apprentice" are you more likely to take them on if they know what they're talking about a little vs. completely clueless? I'm talking the things you can do to prepare yourself so you don't go in*just to talk to a breeder*looking like an idiot.
Lots of times I ask questions here because of anonymity*sp?* and no one's going to tell me I'm wrong for thinking the way I do simply because I'm 17. Seeing as I don't sound mature in the voice, breeders I've called looking to buy a pet have turned me down because I am so young no matter what the questions are I'm asking. No one seems to want to invest their time in the "next generation" if they are mere teens.
This is my observation, and I can give an example involving a bengalcat breeder, me, and my dad that supports.
But how would a teenager get to know the basics? I've seen how-tos *so to speak* on breeding rodents and I can't find anything even close to that on breeding dogs. Or cats, even, though I s'pose they're very prolific on their own *whoever coined the term "multiplying like rabits" has never dealt with cats and doesn't know that in just a few years, one mamma cat could populate a city*
But it seems that asking questions regarding breeding dogs, no matter what the question, is met with hostility. Some people have questions they want answered just to know, not to put in practice.
I don't get it. Even asking the right way to do it was met with hostility on some bits, as in the fact that it's not entirely hypthetical. I thought it was a good idea to start educating yourself when you have the drive for it, not waiting until your 25 and capable of getting the things you need *ie. the experience pup, that i've been after for a while. people tell me i'm wrong for wanting the puppy experience, but is it so wrong to want to understand the responsibilities of house breaking and obedience training and other stuff first hand?*
How do i put without sounding like I want to jump in and make a puppy right now? I didn't think that's how what I've already said would go across.
But as for breeding to better the breed, what about breeding quality dogs with the healthchecks and that meat breed standards but don't have the pricetag of champion dogs? I wouldn't be in it for the money/glory but the joy I know a puppy can bring anyone and the companionship when they grow up.
I missed saying something a second ago. Started a thought, then half forgot it.
If you want to learn NOW and are willing to wait till then to put it into practice, what's the harm in getting in early?
If at, say, 15 you have a burning interest in psychology, but people tell you you're too young to begin to understand and you shouldn't even try, what will that cause? Who'll be better off, the college freshman who took psychology as a class in highschool or the freshman who doesn't even know what depression is *thinks it's just a mood*?
I NEVER made meantion to "where can I get a dog to breed" in this post, and when I had made the question about is it an ok idea to make my own puppy *so to speak* I didn't know some of the things that I know now. Yes, the learning process progresses that quickly sometimes. Mostly only with teens though, because when we want something, we try for it, fail, then learn the right way and go that rout. those that don't try lose interest.

Answer
You get involved with other breeders, of your breed and other breeds.

You go to shows, join breed clubs and kennel clubs, attend educational events.

If you have a breed that was created for some sort of work, you go to trials to learn about the work your breed is supposed to do.

You read everything you can about your breed and dogs in general. You learn about your breed, health problems, training, dog psychology, nutrition, breeding etc.

You learn about breeding ethics.

Best if you can find someone in your breed to mentor you.

Edit: Just because you are a teenager doesn't mean you can't join the clubs. Some places even have a junior kennel club, or programs specifically for juniors. This will help to show you are serious. If you have a registered dog already, train and compete with it in a performance event, like obedience or agility. If you have a purebred that's not registered, you can get an ILP number and compete in performance. Again, competing with your dog will show that you are committed enough to put some effort into it. If you have a groomed breed, learn the correct grooming. People WILL get to know you, if you are persistent. Keep attending the shows and meetings. Meet people, network and learn. Just phoning people and asking questions will not do it. Nobody wants to trust a dog to a fly-by-nighter, but someone who shows serious interest and committment is more likely to get a second look.

One thing sure to put a serious breeder off is if your first interest appears to be "breeding", rather than "the breed".

Edit 2: There's nothing to stop you from starting now and "getting in early". I did.

When I was a teenager, we adopted a Basset Hound from a family member who didn't want it any more. Fortunately, he had come from a good breeder but had been sold as a pet. I was also fortunate that he had grown up to be good enough to show. When I watched my first dog show, I thought "Sam is as good as any of these, I think I'll show him".

So we attended our first match when I was 15. Then our first show. As a handler, I stank. When going around the ring my dog lay down and refused to move. We got reserve in spite of this. I decided he needed some training. I was also inspired by the fact that there were TWO bassets entered in obedience that weekend, as up until then I'd believed that bassets were untrainable. So that's how I also got into obedience.

As I said, I was a poor handler. Our first year showing, we got 2 points. Our second year showing, ditto (though we did earn a CD). I spent the next winter attending handling classes, and in the spring we finished his Championship right away with a group placement.

Unfortunately, a couple of months later he escaped from the yard and drowned in a neighbor's pool. I went to his breeder for a new puppy to show. This dog did not turn out to be show quality, but I showed him anyways for practice and because I enjoyed it. We also did obedience and earned his CDX (and top obedience basset). During this time I was also training and showing/trialing dogs belonging to friends, and learning all-breed grooming as a career. I also got involved in rescue.

By this time I was ready for a foundation bi tch. The breeders all knew me now, new that I was responsible and serious about the breed. I was able to purchase a nice girl from a breeder in Texas, and then another from Quebec.

The rest is history.

Where is the best place to buy a dog crate?

dog crates for sale on Dog Crate - $50 (whistler) for sale in Whistler, British Columbia ...
dog crates for sale image

shakeyour@

I've been looking for a dog crate for my beagle/ basset hound but everywhere is so expensive! I bought a mesh one from walmart but she ripped that right up. Even Walmart for a cheap one is min 50 dollars for crappy quality! I keep looking on ebay but they are all too expensive too. If anyone knows of any place to buy a good quality dog crate for less money please let me know. Thanks!

Answer
You could try posting it as a need on freecycle.org...you could post a "want to buy" on craigslist.com, or you could try local rummage sales. Do any of your local radio stations have a program to buy/sell/trade items?

A crate is going to cost in the $50-$100 range for that size. I bought a nice one at Sportsman's Warehouse for my toy dog that was reasonably priced. Tractor Supply used to have the best prices on crates. Check out farm stores/hunting supply stores in your area for crates...they often have lower prices on pet supplies (and they are often much higher quality, as well).

What SUV can fit multiple dog crates?

Audra

I am looking for an SUV that can fit a total of three dog crates. Rear seats can be up or down, as long as 2 crates pointed out the back and one pointed out the side can fit! Thank you!

Answer
What size crates?
Most SUV's can fit 2- 22"x36" (special SUV side-by-side) crates side by side in the back & then a similar sized crate in front of these across, with an end crate door out the side of the vehicle. Some vehicles like a Honda Element or pretty much any Minivan or Van can even fit 2- 24"x36" crates side by side in the back. A Ford Transit offers a LOT of room for crates.
I have a Subaru Forester & I can fit 2- 20"x30" crates side by side easily. I currently have 2 Medium RuffTough Kennels in the back & a Small RuffTough in front of them sitting across facing to the side.
My recommendation is know the size of your crates & take a measuring tape with you when you vehicle shop. Then try your crates in the new vehicle before you finalize the purchase.
A good car sales person will be supportive of your needs.

How can I train my dog to not pee or poo inside my house?

dog crates wooden on dog crates wood dog crate end table oak dog crate
dog crates wooden image

Hey, Steve

I just got a new puppy , because puppies are easier to train, right? I want a dog I can let sleep on the foot of my bed and not fart on my face or poop on my boxers like last time.. Damn that chihuahua....lol nonetheless he was a great dog

Anyway, should I just let him go to a dog training school thing?

Answer
Always train your dog yourself. Take him to puppy training classes after he is vaccinated, then at 6 months join a dog training club.
As for housetraining,. take him to the spot you WANT him to use, and reward him for using it.
Don't let him wander around the house. Confine him to the kitchen with a child safety
gate when you can't watch him, until he is housetrained. Or crate train him.
Mark off a toilet spot for him to use, bait it with some of his poop and pee stained paper
to give him the idea. For male dogs consider putting in a pee post - a short wooden fence
post is ideal.
Once an hour put him on the lead and take him out. When you put the lead on, walk him to the door and say 'do you want to go out?'
When he goes, give your chosen command 'thats the spot' or 'busy', and reward him like he won you the lottery.
Eventually he will twig what you want. He won't need to go for a couple of outings, then on the next
trip will go 'ta da'- aren't I clever! and ask for his reward.
Ignore any mess anywhere else from now on - thats essential! He can't learn where NOT to go, but
he can learn where to go and on command.

What exactly is a pallet of dog food?

Butterfly

How big is the pallet?

Someone said to go to your nearest city and buy a pallet of the best dog food so that way you won't have to go back and buy more for awhile.

How is that possible?

Answer
A pallet is the wooden "crates" that a large shipment is placed on; generally, they can only be lifted w/ a forklift.

I'm sure it's a good deal to buy in bulk, but that might be pushing it unless you have A LOT of animals! And the food may go bad by the time you get to it (depending on how you store it).

My dog's legs went out, because one of her disk slipped in her lower back. The only way they will be better is if I find the right specialist. I don't want the surgery to be expensive or i will have to go with the other alternitive, putting her to sleep.

Answer
You either need a board certified veterinary neurologist/srugeon, or a veterinary surgeon preferable specializing in orthopedics. Unfortunately the surgery is expensive and can run anywhere from $2000-4000 dollars. The reason for this expense is before the surgery is performed several tests have to be performed. X-rays have to be taken of the back to localize the disc and also a special test called a CT may be needed. Some clinics offer what is called Care Credit which is where you apply for credit so you can pay monthly payments for the surgery.

Possible Paranormal Activity? HELP?

Courtney

Before I give the details, I just have to say that i've always been a skeptic. i believe in my younger years I have experianced a few things worth questioning, but could possibly have explainations. I've never been able to prove anything when dealing with strange happenings, which still leaves me as a skeptic.

The following events have happened sometime between Friday, January 15th through today, January 26th.

A couple of friends of mine, brought an Ouija board over to our new apartment on the 15th. We were having somewhat of a get together, and drinking. I didn't touch the thing, I haven't messed with one of those in about five - six years.

Now. I believe what followed after, all has an explaination. I believe their could be a reason behind everything we're witnessing, but I can't help to be spoked, considering I haven't heard any of the following before, and we have lived here almost two months.

THE 15TH AND 16TH: The night of the 15th, and 16th, I can't recall anything happening. Although, both mornings, when my fiance and I woke up, at the same time, we could hear a popping noise in the kitchen, while we are both in bed. Both mornings this has occured at the exact same time. It almost sounds as if it's a two litter popping, when the air rises in it. Though, we don't have any bottles in the kitchen. I'm sure there's an explaination for the noise, though we find it odd it has happened at the same time both mornings.

THE 16TH - 17TH: On the night of the 16th. We were laying in bed, we have a blowup matress, considering we just moved to Knoxville, from Jacksonville, FL. And don't have all of our items. I was laying closest to the bedroom door, and our dog was laying on my side of the bed, on the floor. It took me sometime to get to sleep. We hadn't thought anything about the bottles, I didn't even consider anything paranormal at this point. Our bedroom door will not open on it's own. If anything, it wants to close by itself, and refuses to stay open. I shut all doors when I go to sleep. It's an OCD thing for me. I was having trouble sleeping. I had this feeling that someone was staring at me, or watching me. Jenova, our dog, was having trouble sleeping too. Around 10 minutes after I finally got to sleep, I heard the door pop open, and the handle jingled, as if someone had twisted it, and let go. The door creaked up a bit, and then stopped. It did not close back. As I have said before, this door, closes on its own.

THE 17TH: Adam had the day off, and we were hanging out at the house. At some point, he walked into the bedroom, and shortly came out. He then asked me why I set the Space Heater in the bedroom, to 100 degree's. We've NEVER touched the heater, as our heater works well enough, and have never had to use it. It's not digital, it's a knob that you have to turn, and it sticks as well. There is no reason for me to have turned it all the way up. I hadn't told him about the handle. But I found the heater turned all the way up odd, and decided to tell him. After explaining to him what happened with the bedroom door the previous night, he laughed a little, and joked that maybe it was because of the board. This is around the time I started thinking about it. But, me being skeptic, and thinking there could be a reason for everything that's happened. About two minutes after telling him what happened, the same thing happened, this time with the closet door. And, the closet door, acts just as the bedroom door. I walked into the bedroom, the closet was completely open. I tapped it, and it closed. We tried to get it to stay open, but it wouldn't stay on it's own. Although, previously, it was.

Nothing to odd happened the next few days.

I don't remember which day it was, but he confronted me about the space heater again. This time, it was on 60. Again, I hadn't touched it. Now, the knob is NOT on the heater. It's on the opposite wall, and it's too high for any of my dogs to accidently knock into it. It's about level with my head.

LAST NIGHT THE 25TH - 26TH: We were sleeping in the living room. I woke up, at around 3AM. And Adam was awake next to me, I asked him why he wasn't sleeping, and he told me to hush. So, I listended for a bit, and could hear what SOUNDED like, a few notes of music, every few minutes. Just barely auidable. It sounded as if it was coming from the TV. It would switch from sounding like music, to sounding like a conversation on the TV. Imagine your TV being on very low, almost to the point where you cant here it, but can pick up a few bits of conversation. Only, your TV is completly off. I thought, maybe the neighbors were playing music, or had their TV loud. The thing is, there is 10 apartments to a Unit. And we're 1 of 3 families that live in our unit. There are three floors, us on the top, and the other two on the first floor. There's nobody directly beside, or below us.

As for today. Adam left the house for work around 10AM. I went back to sleep, awaking

Answer
Ouija boards don't summon spirits or anything they work by the ideometer effect, you push it around subconsciously yourself so you may as well have said that your friends had a nice game of checkers or any other game, since playing them will have exactly the same effect as the ouija - that is none.

It's a bit hard for any of us to identify where your noises and stuff are coming from since we can't hear them and don't have access to your house to investigate, but that seeing you said in the first sentence that you are a skeptic I'm sure you will find answers that aren't based on spooky magic. And sometimes we hear noises and never work out exactly what they are - which doesn't matter since they are causing us no harm and being skeptics we know that they don't originate from some paranormal source.

How do I get my dog over separation anxiety issues?

dog crates trays on Types of Dog Crates | DogCrates.com.au
dog crates trays image

RoyalsOvaC

My dog is 1.5 years old and can not stand being in his kennel when I leave the house. When I get back there is a crazy amount of drool and slobber on his face and on the floor. It has gotten even worse lately with him paying at the door until his foot was bleeding. He even starts to bark non-stop when I place him on a zip line in the back yard.

Answer
The drooling means he's claustrophobic, I know it sounds crazy but my mothers dog did the exact same thing, no matter how much she worked on training her to like the crate my mom would come home to a dog that was soaking wet and a crate tray full of slobber and drool. The only remedy was for her to put the dog in the bathroom with a baby gate up. The dog was much happier in there, maybe you can try using the kitchen and blocking it off with baby gates, he might be happier.

As for the barking in the back yard is this all the exercise he gets? If he's left alone in the back yard to run on the zip line then he's bored and frustrated, frustrated dogs bark to relieve frustration. If you are out there playing with him then he is probably less likely to bark, or if he's being taken for long walks or runs then he will be less likely to bark.

I'd try leaving him in the kitchen when you go out, you'll probably find he does a lot better.

Where can I get a replacement tray for my dog's crate?

gaminmeg

My dog destroyed the plastic tray in her crate due to severe separation anxiety. Does anyone know a good place online where I can order another one?

Answer
Depending what brand it is, go on-line an google the manufacturer - they all sell parts for their crates.

If it's a smaller crate, as a last resort, take measurements and you may be able to find the right size metal sheet pan with edges at a restaurant supply outlet. Don't laugh, they work but it depends on the size of the crate. Whole and half sheet pans.

I would like to start up a dog kennel and reptile breeding buisness in the near future because I just love dogs and exotic animals, but what would be an interesting name for such a place. I'd like a professional name, of course nothing too dumb and corny or anything. What do you think of CanineHerps? I thought of that name because dogs are, of course called canines (or canids) and we associate reptiles & amphibians with herping, herpetoculture, and herpetology and I thought that name would fit, but what are some others that can tell people its a place for dogs and reptiles?

Answer
"What do you think of CanineHerps?"

Well...it would be an attention grabber, since most people would read it as Canine Herpes. That's what I did when I skimmed your question...

And sorry, but unless you're going to be a "satellite" agency to your local Humane Society and deal only with rescue dogs, I doubt you're going to get much help from the folks on this forum. We detest puppy mills.

What would be a nice professional name for a dog kennel/reptile breeding business?

it is nearly winter and is getting really cold
i want to bring my rabbit inside but can only find normal Guinea pig and dwarf rabbit cages.
there are to small
does anyone know where i can get my rabbit a big indoor cage and a cheap price?
do you think it is ok if i leave him in a dog crate like this? i found this picture and is not my rabbit
http://leeds.gumtree.com/leeds/49/63213849.html
thanks

Answer
While a dog crate can be used fine for a rabbit, have you considered making a cage out of shelving cubes? They can be incredibly cheap to buy, and a fairly roomy cage can cost as little as 20$ if you shop around to find the lowest prices. They are easy to dismantle, can be made to whatever shape and size you want and take up a lot less room than a giant dog crate if you ever decide to bring your rabbit back outside for the summer.

You could try Pure Breeds dog shop or Pet Network both based in Victoria. There are usually dog show supply seller at shows in Melbourne on most weekends, ring Dogs Vic and they can tell you where shows are being held this weekend. Good luck.

How much does it cost to own a dog annually?

dog crate 600 on Yu Shan 600-24 Pet Crate End Table, 27-3/4-Inch
dog crate 600 image

I've been wondering how much it would cost to own a dog. I want to get a Labrador Retriever, and I plan on feeding it high-quality food, give it good toys, etc. If you can, could you do a first year and a regular year because first year will have a lot of expenses with everything being new and all of the vaccinations, etc.

Thanks!

Answer
First year is going to be well over a $1,000 dollars.

The one time expenses that you have in the first year:
Purchase price
Spay/Neuter surgery
Puppy vaccinations
Crate
Feeding bowls
Grooming tools
Leashes and collars
Dog bed
Obedience classes
Microchipping
Baby gates
Seatbelt for the car
More variety of chew toys as he grows--the puppy ones will be too easy for him to destroy as he ages
He's going to chew something that he shouldn't and you'll need to replace it or repair it
More frequent petsitting expenses--he needs to go out at least 4 times a day, while an older dog could do with 2-3 walks per day
You'll probably make a few extra trips to the vet as you learn to distinguish emergencies from non-emergencies

After the first year, average is $600-$1,000 per year. You have the basics at home by now, his vet visits will be annual or a few times a year, and you've been through obedience. The biggest variable expense that people overlook is boarding or petsitting. I''ve spent more than $1k on those in some years.

What should I do about my new dog who has severe separation anxiety?

Cruize

The dog is a one year old border collie mix and has been living with us for two months. He is very sweet and well behaved when we are around him. Anytime we leave our house he starts whining and yelping immediately, he will scratch at the doors to try and get out of the house. We have tried to crate train, use products such as Comfort Zone with DAP, homeopet anxiety drops, bark collars, etc and nothing has worked. We exercise him regularly, practice our comings and goings for short periods of time and he has plenty of chew toys such as kongs, stuffed animals, and bones to keep him busy during the day. Our vet recommended we see an animal behaviorist and put our dog on essentially doggy-prozac. The behaviorists we have spoken with will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $450 to $600. The dog is great but I'd probably have to return him before I could drop that much money on him. He attends doggie day care 2 days a week and obedience class 1day. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer
I went through the very same thing with my chihuahua, and it was ruining my life. He was the most, is, the most amazing dog, but he too suffered from this. We did everyhting you wrote about and paid for costly behaviouists. Her advice was basically to make LOVE his crate. We fed him in there, praised him when he would step in, give him treats in there. He would go in it after weeks of doing this for seconds at a time, and then the second we would make a move, he would run out of there in fear we would close the door and leave. I didn't feel right about medicating him for the rest of his life so I continued to stand my ground. I would put him in his crate, but instead of leaving I would do house work etc. to show him that his crate wasn't a bad place where we would put him before we did his worst nightmare- leave. To try to make a long story short, put soothing music on...Start off slowely by leaving for short periods of time before hours long, and if all else fails...get a second dog! We have two, so what we ended up doing was putting them together. Now he is happy because he is with his big sister. We didn't do this in the beginning because our girl liked to be in her crate alone, but we were desperate. Now all is well, and they love being together. Problem solved. Seperation anxiety, has been explained to me by various highly respected vets as a HORRIBLE many times forever long problem. You are doing everything right it seems...making sure he is mentally stimulated (walks), DAP, etc. So if he is truesly a great dog everyother time except when you leave, consider a second dog, or having a dog walker come by once or twice a day, depending on your work schedual. They usually charge, well in my area $10 every visit. That would definitely help..PLUS...remember...you are this guys, or girls...second or third home past puppy hood. Eventhough he loves you and they know you love him...technically he has been abandoned by his previous loved ones in his eyes. Remain consistant for the next months, and you could have a completely changed dog. One that feels at ease that you wont abandon him. Because that's what seperation anxiety is ultimately....a fear or being abandoned. Hope this helped you soom. I am a true animal lover, and my dogs are my life..if you need anymore help, or have any other questions feel free to email me directly. alllanas@yahoo.com Good luck, and stay strong. :)

How to transport my dog to another state without me being there?

dog crates york on Boarding Kennels - York Cattery - York Dog Grooming - York

baxasuka

I need to transport my dog to New York from Denver. My friend is currently watching her and how do I bring her over here without me being there to take her and most importantly, what company offers those services...She is a German Shepard that weighs around 70-75 lbs. Please let me know, Im desperate.

Answer
your friend could ship her to you by plane. Of course she would have to be in the cargo hold. She would need a health clearance from the vet just before being shipped. And a crate approved by the airline for shipping. You could check out dofferent airlines regarding costs and other requirements.

How well do Cats travel on a plane?

shywink

My friend is planning on taking a long plane trip from New York to Seattle.
Are there any special preparations she should do first?
She is worried the cat will get overly scared or excited and have a bad experience. Is there some medicine she can give him to keep him calm?

Answer
A sedative should NEVER EVER be used on a cat on a plane. Cats can have adverse reactions to medications especially since the effect of the meds will be greatly increased due to the altitude. And if the cat gets sick or starts siezuring mid-flight - what then? The pilot isn't going to make an emergency for the landing for the cat and the CAT WILL DIE.

Hopefully the cat is flying in the cabin with her so she'll be able to talk to the cat and/or put her fingers in the front of the carrier by her feet to give him a scratch. If she has the option - definitely recommend her carrying the cat on. Note that some airlines, though, don't allow pets in the cabin and ALL airlines limit the number of animals in the cabin at a time (most as little as two per flight) so she needs to let the airline know she intends to have a cat with her onboard. She'll also pay a fee - usually around $100.

As for getting the cat ready for the flight if it's not a cat that's used to going in a crate to vet she needs to start doing that right away. Get a hard crate - NOT a fabric one - as a) the hard crates are more secure, b) they permit more airflow, c) they give the cat a better view out and d) they are easily cleaned up. The airline can let her know what the maximum dimensions of the crate can be. Tell her to get the crate and set it up without the front gate in. Put a soft blanket inside the crate and toss a few toys or catnip inside of it. The key is getting the cat to go into it ON ITS OWN. You do NOT want to just force the cat into it and assume it'll be OK.

When I moved from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Seattle, WA five years ago I flew with my ferrets in the cabin and my dog and cats in cargo. Everyone did just fine, but, like I said, if it's just the one cat recommend that it's with her in cabin. I also recently flew to California to a show with one of my cats. She was a bit scared during takeoff - which makes perfect sense as the plane gets very loud and rumbly - but the rest of the flight she was just fine. Going home she just stuck a paw out on put it on my foot during takeoff - and then settled down and napped.

What size crate should I get for a medium-sized dog that weighs 34 lbs?

It's a border collie/lab retriever mix...she is 1 year old...and will she grow anymore do you think? Because I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a crate that she will end up outgrowing.
Where can I get one for cheap?
@Carol: I would do that, but I'm picking her up from the humane society tomorrow to take her home, and need something to put her in. lol but thanks!

Answer
You will often see crates on Craig's List for sale
SInce she is a mix, you're going to need to measure her height at the top of her head when she stands square - she will need to be able to stand without ducking down, and turn around comfortably, and lie on her side with her legs stretched out.

What is involved with shipping a dog?

Silverwolf

Long story short, I need to get a young dog (1 year old lab) from Eastern Pennsylvania to Midwest Ohio and have no clue how to go about it. HELP!!!

How much does it cost?
What do I do?
Who do I contact?

Any info is appreciated.

Answer
Alaska and Continental are the two best airlines to fly a dog (no weather restrictions) , Delta comes in next. You have to make sure the dog is current on all vaccines, take him to the vet for a health certificate prior to travel. Book your flight, get an appropriate crate and you are all set. The price is by weight and crate size, rough guess about $400.

You can check out the airlines web page for more detailed info.

Need help arranging furniture in a large living room...?

dog crates decorative on Decorative Wicker Pet Residence Dog Den, Dog Den, Dog Crate Furniture
dog crates decorative image

.KNL.

We have a fairly large living room. Furniture consists of a couch, love seat, large round coffee table, large decorative table, hide-away entertainment center, and a recliner.
The problem is that I have pretty terrible vision, and even with glasses I can't see the television from more than six or so feet away, and I have a hard time with even that. There is a hallway from one wall, the kitchen behind the living room, and the door to the office on the next wall, so we only have two walls to work with, and it's frustrating! I kinda don't want the couch just floating in the middle of the room, but I'm afraid that may be what has to happen.

Does anyone else have any ideas or advice?
We also have a HUGE bedroom that only has a bed, dog crate, dog bed, and two night stands in it, which leaves a HUGE space full of nothingness. (Our clothes and closet are in the master bathroom). Ideas to make it look less empty and huge??

Thanks in advance! :D

Answer
I'm not sure if you're prepared to buy anymore furniture..if you are..a large library table or writing desk may be in order..to put behind the floating couch..if you can't see the tv..the room won't be very functional...if $ is an issue...you can find lovely pieces of furniture at garage sales..resale shops..etc..all they may need is a coat of paint or some elbow grease..we recently downsized and our old house had a huge living rm and master bedroom too..i used 2 sofas..one placed.. "floating",if you will..in the center of the room...i put a large "ladie's writng desk" behind it..used it to display pictures..some bric a brac..etc..maybe you could do the loveseat and recliner on one side of the room..the tv..and entertainment center on one wall..and the couch floating..with the large decorative table placed behind it..the round coffee table..maybe in front of the couch..between the loveseat and recliner you could consider a round, skirted table..these can be found fairly reasonably or even made with an old barstool and a round wooden top nailed to it..you could make or have made a round tablecloth that would blend with whatever fabrics you may have..In the bedroom..again..i would consider adding a dresser..or chest of drawers..or both..go to garage sales and try to find something that is sturdy and simple..you can do all sorts of things with paint..you can, again, use a skirted table..maybe add a chair from a garage or resale shop..and voila!! I am assuming that you do not want to spend much $..so these are all thrify ideas..good luck to you..I have found that the most charming houses are those that required some imagination to put together instead of just throwing $ at them..

I'm having some inside dog problems.?

Foxworthy

My dog is an outside dog and i recently trained him to be i an inside dog (via not peeing or crapping anywhere, completely calm, obeys commands), but there is one more things to scratch off the list.

1: my room mate just has to have her little square pillows on the couch. PROBLEM: My dog thinks her pillows are chew toys.

if anyone can help me with this, respond. please.

-Jeff "Foxworthy" Koen

PS: BLAM >:( (from newgrounds.com)

Answer
You could try getting some of that "bitter" spray that makes the object taste nasty. However, I had a lab (and I tired every single kind of spray out there) and he just thought it was sort of like icing on a cake. Yum!
Some dogs are just chewers. You are not going to be able to avoid that. So instead you need to adjust your way of doing things to protect the dogs and your home (a pillow is full of fluffy stuff that can cause obstruction when eaten - very dangerous for a dog)

Give him a bed of his own, on the floor in the main living area - then tell him the couch is off limits. If he's not on the couch, he won't be able to get at the pillow.

Don't get him any cloth chew-toys. To a dog that regularly gets fabric chew-toys, that pillow is nothing but a great big chew toy that, for some reason you are not sharing. They don't get it.

Offer him other toys. If you catch him chewing on the pillow, say "no" in a very stern voice. Then hand him something that he *can* chew on. Take him over to his bed and praise him when he chews on the correct object.

Lastly, consider crating him when you are not home to make sure that he is not chewing things. While some owners find this cruel, dogs actually like their crate, considering it their own special little den.

Good luck to you! On both counts - the dog who is still learning and the roommate who won't budge on decorative pillows. :)

Answer
A cheap place. Yeah that last time a friend of mine used a cheap place her dog got cancer and passed away. Of course the sued, but the money wasn't worth losing their beloved pet.

EDIT~!!
and for the person that said cancer hsa nothing to do with it She got something from the kennel that caused her to get cancer. so thats my bad wording she didnt "get cancer", but something she got caused her to get cancer.

Don't look for "cheap" go to different boarding places walk around in each to see the cleanliness how they treat the animals..etc..

Me personally I never board my dog. I always pay family to keep her for me when I leave. I would think thats the best thing especially when its a small dog.
__________________________________________

HA well if your neighbor is worse than the boarding place well then "duh" don't let your neighbor take care of them...thats just common sense.

I pay my neighbor and she always takes care of my dog. Feeds her brings her dogs over to play with her. BUT like I said I pay her lol. I do trust my neighbor if I didnt well then she would'nt be watching my dogs so if you have someone you can "trust" then I think thats the best way to go.

Amish dog breeders?

teenabeena

I recently moved to NJ and I am looking to buy a puppy. Most people tell me they got their dog from an Amish breeder closeby in PA. I did some research and I found that the Amish view thier dogs as a crop and mass produce them in puppymills. Is this true of all Amish breeders. My friends dog seems healthy. Are there any good Amish breeders around here? Do they all run puppy mills?
I am looking for a chihuahua or a miniature pinscher.

Answer
YES it is very true.. They are well known to be puppymills, especially in the PA area.. Do a google on the whole thing, you'll see that it's awful. Lots of news stories about how they don't care for their animals and breed them just to make money without regard for the dog's health or anything else..

There was a puppymill busted around here not too long ago. 40 dogs left in a barn without food and water, some dead, most dying, all full of parasites.. It was one of the Amish.

We see them in town now and then... They get their horse from the slaughter house before it is killed... Then they work it to death... I maybe wouldn't say 100% of them are puppymills because that would be a ridiculous statement, obviously there is maybe maybe maybe some that aren't like that. But it is a well known fact that they are puppymills.

Pennsylvaniaâs moniker as the âpuppy mill capitol of the Eastâ is no secret. If the state is to shed its shameful reputation, changes to Dog Law are absolutely necessary to protect dogs being bred in terrible conditions. No reasonable person or organization would argue with this.

The breeding of dogs in Pennsylvania represents a multi-million dollar industry, so it should come as no surprise that those who have the most to lose are putting forth the biggest opposition to reform. The American Kennel Club is leading the pack in across-the-board opposition. Nipping at the their heels is the Pennsylvania Federation of Dog Clubs. Both are campaigning furiously to stop humane legislation.

A member of the Agriculture Committee, Rep. Jim Cox (R-Berks), said this about high volume breeders at a recent Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee meeting: âThey breed some dogs, find them good homes, and make a buck in the process.â His ignorance of a major problem in Pennsylvania is mind-boggling.

Irving Vas

I'm basically looking to buy a few plastic kennels but I don't want to pay prices like $150 for a large kennel.

Answer
Are there any Walmarts nearby? Years ago I bought a wire crate there that was much cheaper and larger than the one I bought previously at Petco. Or try www.craigslist.org or maybe www.ebay.com or www.amazon.com .

Im about to get a 4 week old male Husky puppy, Is there any special foods i need? what are some good treats?

Ana Flores

Do i need any special Home? Can it live in the warm temperatures of Los Angeles?

Answer
That is only when better breeders start weaning. It will need puppy milk replacer plus dry puppy chow almost liquified with water. Don't worry about treats. It isn't the end of the world to remove a puppy fromits litter that soon, but it will harm how it relates to other dogs. It really needs continuing contact with other dogs, but only carefully selected healthy ones.

I would buy a small crate. Don't leave it shut up too long, or you will force it to learn to foul its crate.

As long as it has shade and water, it should be OK in the heat. Be3 ready to respond to signs of discomfort.

What SUV can fit multiple dog crates?

dog crates van on Boarding Dog Kennels & Cattery, Oxfordshire | Avalon Kennels & Cattery
dog crates van image

How to secure dog crates/cages in a van?

Limbo

Have my own pet services business and recently got a van. How can I secure the crates to the floor when moving? Thanks

Answer
You could get bolts for the floor, custom made. Actually I use a crate in my Peugeot SW and have the rear seats down, so I can use the anchor brackets for the rear seat to attach benching chains to, anchoring the crate as my Whippet is light, and the crate could fly in a crash. Obviously any chain, rope or other attachment would be fine as long as there's an anchor point to attach it to - I just use my old benching chains which I used when I was exhibiting at benched shows (in the UK).
