I'm flying with my dog in Cargo where can I get something called the "Crate Mate" that attaches to the crate?

We're flying USA 3000, from Tampa to Detroit, in about 3 weeks. The "Crate Mate" thing is supposedly made of heavy duty backpack like material that bolts to the dogs crate, it holds all paperwork required to fly, and spare water and food, in case of any problems. I read about it on this website: http://www.bcrescue.org/flying.html...

Answer
Call your pet store and find out if they have it. Look it up on the internet, I'm sure you can buy one from an online store.

During World War II, African American servicemen served in segregated units. true or false?

Rashid

Answer
when the US army arrived in London they Unpacked Crates and took out Signage to put on the Outside of all the Buildings allocated the the US Military

""""" Whites Only Coloreds around the Back """""" we said look they cannot spell

Churchill and the British High command Complained but FDR being a Racist said it was Good For Moral Yes only the Whites

the Coloureds arrived later and Lived On separate Bases

and when the Coloured Mustang Squadrons arrived they were on separate Bases

In France African American troops Liberated a Town in France from the Nazis

they returned for some R & R and were Denied access until the white Major in charge said we took this town from the Nazis i think we can take it back from from you Green troops the African Americans enjoyed their R & R

there were signs on British Pubs No Dogs and Irish and one Publican Put up his Own Sign

No Dogs and Irish

Regulars and Coloreds Only are Welcome

we Found the African Americans Cleaner Better Spoken Better Mannered than the White Americans

and Most Of My Family were appalled that the USA had come to Fight the worlds Biggest Racist yet they Carried their racism all the way to Berlin

after the USA went Home My Family used the American Racist Signs as Fire wood

During the World War II, African-American enlistment was at an all time high, with more than 1 million serving in the armed forces. However, the U.S. military was still heavily segregated. The air force and the marines had no blacks enlisted in their ranks, and the navy only accepted blacks as cooks and waiters. The army had only five African-American officers.

In addition, no African-American would receive the Medal of Honor during the war, and their tasks in the war were largely reserved to noncombat units.

Black soldiers were Ordered to give up their seats in trains to the Nazi prisoners of war

Eisenhower ordered all Black and Coloured troops to be placed at least 50 miles Outside Paris During the Paris Liberation March to show this was a White Victory

the British and French refused and of Course the Jew Eisnehower got his own way

and when we organized the Liberation March through Paris he ordered all Non whites to be positioned 50 miles from Paris and in His words we the USA will show the World this was a White Victory

Due to American pressure for a white-only liberation force, black French troops were excluded from the triumphal return to Paris on the 25th

Papers unearthed by the BBC reveal that American commanders ensured that the liberation of Paris on 25 August 1944 was seen as a "whites only" victory.

Many who fought Nazi Germany during World War II did so to defeat the vicious racism that left millions of Jews dead.

Yet the BBC's Document programme has seen evidence that black colonial soldiers - who made up around two-thirds of Free French forces - were deliberately removed from the unit that led the Allied advance into the French capital.

By the time France fell in June 1940, 17,000 of its black, mainly West African colonial troops, known as the Tirailleurs Senegalais, lay dead.

Many of them were simply shot where they stood soon after surrendering to German troops who often regarded them as sub-human savages.

Their chance for revenge came in August 1944 as Allied troops prepared to retake Paris. But despite their overwhelming numbers, they were not to get it.

'More desirable'

The leader of the Free French forces, Charles de Gaulle, made it clear that he wanted his Frenchmen to lead the liberation of Paris.

I have told Colonel de Chevene that his chances of getting what he wants will be vastly improved if he can produce a white infantry division
General Frederick Morgan

Allied High Command agreed, but only on one condition: De Gaulle's division must not contain any black soldiers.

In January 1944 Eisenhower's Chief of Staff, Major General Walter Bedell Smith, was to write in a memo stamped, "confidential": "It is more desirable that the division mentioned above consist of white personnel.

"This would indicate the Second Armoured Division, which with only one fourth native personnel, is the only French division operationally available that could be made one hundred percent white."

At the time America segregated its own troops along racial lines and did not allow black GIs to fight alongside their white comrades until the late stages of the war.

Eisenhower Ordered the Bulk of African Americans back to the USA before the Bulk of American Forces to ensure they would Miss out on the Victory Marches In American Cities

and they made this arrogant Racist Adulterer a President of a so called Christian Country

What are your favorite dog products and what do they cost?

Heres a list of what I need :

-Shampoo
-Treats
-Brush
-Dog Deodorizer
-Food
-Toys

I am writing an essay to my parents and I need costs for a Shih Tzu puppy I hope to get.

Answer
Hartz has a line of combs and brushes (I LOVE the large slicker brush) that are as high a quality as the best ones you can buy but cost around $2.59 each. I recommend a slicker, a rake and a pin brush.

Shampoo: My favorite is Pure Pearl by PurePet. $9 a 12 oz bottle but it dilutes w/ water at 20:1 so a very good buy and very gentle.

Food: Premium brand.. probably $15 for a small bag

Treats: I like to use ANOTHER premium brand of dogfood as cookies.. or cat food. Also itty bitty bits of cut up leftovers make good training treats.

Toys: Kong $9. Stuffies (I get mine at garage sales) plastic soda bottles w/ rings/lids/labels removed.

I've never used a deodorizer.. mostly because my dogs eat high quality food.

For cleaning up: Simple Solution available at Petco and PetSmart $25 for a gallon (put it in a spray bottle to use).

Crate: for a small dog $20-40.

Training classes: $100

Well-puppy care: Vet visits- $250 for first year.

How old are you? Please take into account that the dog will probably live to 12-16 years of age.. where will YOU be in 8 years (college? finding an apartment?) and are your parents willing to be stuck with your dog? My daughter's father was unwilling to keep her then 17 year old cat when she left for college... she had to fly the cat out to me.

What breed of dogs is good for a family?

Alan R

My father recently passed away and my family is looking for a dog that is good with children and strangers and other dogs but will protect our family at night or from intruders

also we would like it if the dog didnt shed much (minimally)

Answer
Hi there!

Personally I have chosen a golden retriever - actually, I have 23 goldens and golden mixes! And while breed is very important, it's temperament that is truly the issue.

Mixed breeds, goldens, dachshunds, and many other breeds can and will make wonderful family pets. I've even seen rotties make amazing family pets (I have one of those, too!) - it's really all in the personality and the raising (the way you treat and train them) that makes the difference. I've had mutts become my 'Soul Dog' and steal my heart - it doesn't always matter what the breed is, but it always matters how they take to you and respond to you from the moment you lay your eyes on them.

Also, you need to consider the following questions in your search for the best breed for you and your family:

1.) Your child's/children's age, maturity level and ability to handle the additional responsibility

2.) The size of your home and yard (fenced in or not, near heavy traffic, other dogs nearby, pet deposit, carpets or hardwood floors, do you have a dog door to a fenced in yard, etc.)

3.) The time you will have to spend with your new family member to train, socialize, groom and love them (will someone be there during the day, will they be crated while you are gone, do they have access to food/water/outside, does someone have time to walk them or take them to the park or pet store to socialize, etc.)

4.) The amount of money you are willing to spend (some breeds cost more to buy, feed and maintain, or are you looking to adopt/rescue? Can you afford their shots, healthy and high quality food, bed, toys, training, grooming, etc.)

5.) Any allergies in the family (to dust, pet dander, hair, etc.)

6.) Male or female (temperaments are different per breed based on sex and even hair length - for instance, my mother has 7 mini dachshunds, 4 short hair & 3 long hair - the personality traits of the short haired are different than the long haired. She also finds her dachshunds to be more difficult to train than I have found my goldens and golden mixes to be!) Also, you will want to get them 'fixed' by the time they are 1 - this helps with aggression, mess, personality and over-population.

7.) Do you have other pets (of any kind) or plan on getting other pets in the future?

If you can answer some of the above questions, we can get a better idea of what you are looking for and need, and that way we can help you find the best breed(s) for you and your family!

After all, there is nothing worse than getting a dog based on someone else's suggestion, or the way it looks, or just that it happened to be free and there in front of you, then finding out that dog (and breed) is not want you want/need/can handle, and having to find it a new home or give it to the pound to be killed (or worse yet, have it injure a family member or another pet!)

I hope this helps, and I would love to help in any way I can - just ask!

Warmly,
Michele

Does anyone have any good tips for traveling with a cat?

best dog kennel for car travel on SturdiBag Small Black Pet Carrier
best dog kennel for car travel image

July

I'm moving and taking my big black cat with me on the eight or nine hour drive to my new place. I once took him on a trip of that length sitting on my lap with no problems, but he's reacted much less well to trips since, perhaps because he's been in a cat carrier. He yowls constantly whenever he's in the car. I've bought a bigger, more comfortable carrier that he can move around in--actually a portable dog kennel--and have been getting him used to it. I'd take him on some shorter drives but I don't own a car. I'd really prefer not to give him drugs at all. Is there anything else I can do to make sure he's comfortable and calm?

Answer
Catnip. It is not a drug. Cats love it and it drives them crazy for about 15 minutes, then it calms them down. You do not say how you will handle litter issues on the trip. I have a carrier big enough for a small litter box and food and water. If it will be really hot, he will at least need water on the trip. Put a layer of catnip in the bottom of the cage/carrier then put a blanket over top of it. Make sure you use high quality fresh catnip. It really works with mine. I live 13 miles from the nearest vet and mine hate the car. It makes a little bit of a mess, but the calming effect is well worth the mess.

Would a Suburban fit our dog kennel and luggage for a road trip?

DoDucksLay

We're driving from Houston to Florida in a few weeks and we're thinking about renting either a Suburban or an Expedition for the trip. We need to carry 5 people, a dog (in a kennel), and maybe 4 or 5 suitcases. The kennel is about 2 feet high, 3 feet long, and 2 feet wide. Will all this fit in the trunk of a Suburban or Expedition? Where can we rent one?

Answer
The kennel you describe should fit in a Suburban, as well as the rest of your passengers. You might need a luggage rack for the suitcases if you want to have some sort of comfort level while you travel.

You'll have to call around and see what company might rent these larger vehicles. Be prepared to pay a premium for the big cars. You might also consider a 9-passenger van. It could give a bit more room to spread out.

Can anyone list all the vaccine my puppy had to take.?

itzel_po

Can some one please name all the vaccine that my dog has to have. I really don't want to miss one. And are all vaccine need to be taken every year or it it only the rabies.

Answer
Canine Parvovirus
Parvovirus is still common especially in lower income areas where people try to save money by avoiding vaccinations. When Parvovirus first occurred 15 years ago, there was no vaccine available and large numbers of dogs lost their lives. When the first Parvovirus vaccine arrived, vets had queues around the street corners.

It causes sudden vomiting and diarrhoea of watery blood, severe shock, acute abdominal pain and death within 24 hours.

Treatment is prolonged, costly and not always successful. The virus spreads easily and can survive up to one year in contaminated soil- a dog has only to sniff where a dog went to the toilet one year ago to pick up the infection eg on its walk in the park

Canine Distemper
Canine Distemper occurs occasionally. It is a highly contagious viral disease. Symptoms vary but can include fever, sneezing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and depression. Muscle tremors, fits and paralysis occur later in the disease. Treatment is usually ineffective and for those that do survive, there is risk of permanent brain damage.

Canine Hepatitis
This is a very serious viral disease affecting the liver of dogs. Symptoms include high fever, depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea and acute abdominal pain. In severe cases, death can occur within 24-36 hours. Dogs that recover may develop long term liver and kidney problems.

Prevention of Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus
These days, dogs receive annual booster to protect them from Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus (see table below) as a bare minimum.

Kennel Cough
Dogs coming into contact with large numbers of other dogs e.g. boarding kennels, shows, often catch kennel cough and develop a nasty throat and/or chest infection.
There are several "bugs" which can cause kennel cough of which the two worse are Bordetella and Parainfluenza.

Prevention of Kennel Cough
Both Bordetella and Parainfluenza are preventable by use of vaccines. There are still a few other "bugs" which can cause a milder kennel cough, especially in dogs that bark all day long when in kennels, but they are not as serious. It's like over-doing it when you go to support your kid's soccer match (not me!)
Boarding kennels will not allow dogs onto there premises if these vaccines are not current, as they are highly contagious and makes dogs feel very ill.
Coronavirus
Coronavirus causes severe bloody watery diarrhoea, shock, abdominal pain and vomiting. There is variable mortality amongst puppies and older dogs. Signs appear very suddenly. The diarrhoea looks and smells just like Parvovirus. We see approx. 1-2 affected dogs each month.
For more information, go to our Coronavirus page.
Leptospirosis
This is a disease spread by infected rodents. The bacteria affect the kidneys and livers and dogs can get seriously ill. It is more common in places where there is a lot of stagnant water. The South Strathfield Emergency centre sees approx. 2-3 cases each year in dogs from the western suburbs of Sydney. It's something to be wary of.

Prevention of Leptospirosis and Coronavirus
Leptospirosis and Coronavirus can be prevented by using the combined Protech Duramune C2i (Protech C2) vaccine. It needs to shots 4 weeks apart to work. Once this has happened, then its an annual vaccine in combination with either Protech C3 or Protech C5

Annual Booster
Components

Protech C3 Distemper, Hepatitis & Parvovirus
Protech C5 C3 & Kennel Cough
Protech C2 Leptospirosis and Coronavirus
Protech C7 C5 & C2
Protech C3-C2 C3 & C2
Make sure your dog has an annual booster
- they are vital to a dog's health

Where can I buy cubes for a guinea C&C cage in Sydney (Australia)?

Janie

Hi everyone, I want to build a C&C cage although it is pretty hard to find the cubes here in Sydney.
Any suggestions?
ty.

Answer
If you cannot find cubes, you may use other materials.
Perhaps a used large dog pen would work?
I used one for my guinea oigs when I didn't have cubes at the moment.
Some people have used kiddie pools (the large plastic kind with high sides) as a cage instead of cubes, and you could even use a sand box.
I'll show you examples:

I would like to start up a dog kennel and reptile breeding buisness in the near future because I just love dogs and exotic animals, but what would be an interesting name for such a place. I'd like a professional name, of course nothing too dumb and corny or anything. What do you think of CanineHerps? I thought of that name because dogs are, of course called canines (or canids) and we associate reptiles & amphibians with herping, herpetoculture, and herpetology and I thought that name would fit, but what are some others that can tell people its a place for dogs and reptiles?

Answer
"What do you think of CanineHerps?"

Well...it would be an attention grabber, since most people would read it as Canine Herpes. That's what I did when I skimmed your question...

And sorry, but unless you're going to be a "satellite" agency to your local Humane Society and deal only with rescue dogs, I doubt you're going to get much help from the folks on this forum. We detest puppy mills.

Where can I find an affordable small dog crate or kennel?

dog crates on sale walmart image

Next week I am getting a small yorkie. She is gonna live in my room, so I have to have a crate or kennel. I have looked online at the stores like petco, petsmart, etc. They are all like $60.00 to $150.00. I can't find an affordable one HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
Walmart has small plastic crates. They cost about $20. The wire ones are more.
Garage sales and thrift stores might have a crate for $5-10.

As your dog is going to stay small, get a crate that will be suitable for her when she is full grown. One for a 10lb dog will work. If you go too big, she will use part of it to potty and it will make house breaking harder.

I MIGHT be getting my first dog soon, need some help?

Stark

We are TALKING about getting a dog. So i need your help with figuring out costs for a medium/large breed dog. I live in an apartment that requires a $400 pet deposit and $15 a month for your pets rent. Adoption fee should be around $100-150. I work at a vet clinic, so i get a 50% discount on Everything plus free exams. I figure $50 for vaccines and around $100 for neuter if niether are already done. $60 for year round heartgard. These are based on prices at my clinic with my discount. A dog license is $7. Things that i don't know prices for are food bowls, collar and leash, toys, and crate. Also, cost for obedience training. And food cost per month. Is there any other costs i am missing? Is there any other good advice you can give me about owning a dog? I have done a lot of research, and i work with dogs everyday. But i want to make sure i do what is best for my dog. We are not posotive yet if we are getting one, I just want to be prepared. We plan to adopt an adult dog.
i do plan to adopt from my local humane society where i used to volunteer. I don't have an overly busy schedule, my boyfriend and i both work, but we have weekends off, and we work different hours, so the dog would not be home for long periods of time. I just prefer adult dogs to puppies. Though we live in an apartment, i do want a medium/large sized dog, we will be taking him for walks at LEAST once daily, but probably also in the evening. And there will be plenty of play time inside. thank you for any help.

Answer
I like the convenience of one-stop shopping. If you like that, I'd recommend PetSmart because they are a large store with better prices overall and a large inventory of supplies to choose from, varying in price. Also, depending on your dogs needs, the type of collar, leash or "Easy Walk" you might get can vary.
PetSmart has an excellent food that is a bit cheaper than other premium foods (and better than many of the premium foods)- I'd recommend their Authority Harvest Baked. That would cost you about 30 dollars a month. I feed my dogs Nature's Recipe because one has a sensitive stomach. I add Pet Botanics Lamb Log and Beef Log sliced and cubed- and mix it in their food.
Treats are something that I spend about 20 dollars a month for three dogs.
Toys: Big stores have big sales. Some essentials are objects for chewing like a Kong, large Nylabones, hard biscuits. Your initial expense will of course be quite a bit more if you get everything at once.
Dogs are often destructive with dog beds or they tear easily or wear out soon. What I do for my dogs is fold a king sized comforter two times and it makes a comfortable bed they can arrange as they like and it is easily washable. I get them from a store like Family Dollar or WalMart on sale and for less than 25 dollars you can have a great bed.
PetSmart offers beginner obedience classes for a reasonable price. Basically your dog will get to socialize and learn the basics like sit, down, stay, come, etc. If you get an adult dog he or she will likely know a lot of that already but the socialization would be good. Daily walks outside of their yard or house is important.
Many places have great dog parks now that are free. My city has at least four that I know of, funded by the city.
For food and water bowls I like the stainless steel ones and you can get a stand which holds two bowls and is adjustable to height. I can't remember how much that was, but it was well worth the purchase. Another thing I have is an air tight container to store their food in to eliminate the bug factor and smell.

I think a medium would suit your dog just fine! But please look for yourself!

A dog should not be put into one of these crates for outdooors at all. You may want to look into a outdoor kennel they have them at Home Depot.

How can I train my dog to have "accidents" in a more desirable place>?

litlady_19

My indoor dog is 3.5 years old and she is great. She rarely has accidents in the house. While I fully expect accidents, I need to know how to train her to use a certain place in the house for those accidents. I am patient and I know this takes time, I'm simply looking for technique advice.

Answer
I use a special treats as a reward (one that he normally doesn't get)... the dog only gets it when he/she goes OUTSIDE.

I start out by taking the dog outside, and saying "go pee" or "go poop" over and over. When the dog goes, then I carry on like I the Publishers Clearing House Prize Van just pulled in to my driveway!!!! And, I give the treat right there on the spot!

It's important that you pay very close attention to the dog. Keeping it leashing inside with her will help with this. If you can't be right there, then you should crate the dog.

You should take the dog out frequently. If you doesn't know what times he/she generally needs to potty, then keeping a log might help.

ruphalfa

I have a regular cab truck and train dogs. I was looking at dog kennels and covering it with a tarp vs these dog boxes. What are the pros and cons of these dog boxes?

Answer
If you are not going to get a real vehicle to transport dogs safely in-such as a van, I suggest that you purchase a camper shell for your truck AND install a sliding rear window in your cab (if you do not have one-but who doesn't) so that the animals can get heat and air.

Crates in the back and a tarp? No responsible dog owner would let you transport their dogs like that.

How to train what seems to be an untrainable dog?

Jesus Dick

I've had this dog for a little over 4 months. We've tried taking her outside after eating, crate training her, everything. We put her in a crate over night, and the next morning you poops and pees all in the cage. Me and my dad don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?

Answer
4 months old is still a puppy.
Puppies need outside a minimum of 8 times a day.
Dogs hate to have messes in their cages/kennels/dens.
Try putting potty pads all over one room - then day by day remove one - until there is only one left by the door.
Or try: After he has finished his meal, take him out and wait for him to go. If he does not produce anything after 10 minutes, bring him back in, and then turn right around and go straight back out again. Repeat this until he has eliminated outside. Then he gets praise, a treat, and his walk, If it takes all day, it takes all day. Break the pattern once and you won't have to again.
To clean up the accidents you have to use a special pet cleaner that destroys the enzymes and gets rid of the smell for you [and gets rid of the smell for the dog]. Dogs can still smell where they have gone if it has not been properly cleaned with a pet cleaner.

RAbbit cages? c&c england?

kittycat

I am getting a rabbit, or two and want to try and provide them a good amount of space in an indoor cage without spending too much money. One idea is to use a dog crate or cage which i have read could be good although it is important to be careful about the bars and their width apart (with limbs and getting stuck etc)

I then thought about c&c caging as it can be quite cheap and is customizable. I have found a good kit with the squares of metal, cable ties and clips but i thought that if that wasn't enough then maybe i could get something very similar but meant for shoes from amazon:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/C-C-GUINEA-PIG-HEDGEHOG-LARGE-INDOOR-RUN-PLAY-PEN-CAGE-METAL-GRID-CUBE-NEW-UK-/360394794681?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Small_Animals&hash=item53e93426b9

http://www.amazon.co.uk/INTERLOCKING-SHOE-ORGANIZER-STORAGE-PAIRS/dp/B001BYR1A6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327706660&sr=8-1

Would something like this be good if they fit together etc.

also the 'shoe' ones would go at the back as a way of keeping in sawdust and litter.
I think i could make them fit!

Answer
The ones from ebay are very versatile. I've made many cages with these type grids.

What are you using sawdust for??? I'll assume you plan to use it as bedding?
That is way too messy for my taste. I never used bedding of any kind -- it's totally unnecessary.

If you have a litter pan (preferably high-backed) and a good litter (like Yesterday's News, unscented, or Carefresh) then that is all you need. (I'm in US, so don't know if those litters are available to you)

Here are two such cages I made. The first was for one bunny and the other was for two.

For a cage bottom you can use linoleum, untreated drywall, or even carpet (to name a few ideas). Only use carpet, though, if he's not ingesting it. You can also put in an old towel for him to dig, scrunch and cuddle with.

What is the difference between a dog crate and a dog taxi?

Double O D

Dog crates and taxis are similar. Which should I get if I'm going to leave the dog in it for long periods of time?

Answer
"taxi" is nothing more than what a specific brand chooses to call them. Another calls them a "Pet Porter", and yet another calls them a "Kennel-Cab". This is caused because these companies register these as trade names so that other companies can't use them.

Regardless of what brand they are, or style, I call them a "crate", and all my dogs know them as "kennel"

We got her yesterday and she slept with my brother. Today, my dad bought a pretty big cage so she can sleep there tonight so we can actually we sleep! I think they only wanna use it for a little while until we train her. I feel bad for the dog! What should we do?

Answer
It is important to be sure the crate is not too big. She needs enough room to stand up and lie down, but not enough to defecate in the crate and have room to stay away from it. This will prevent her from messing in her crate. you can use partitions in the crate as she grows, so it is not too big. You also want to be to not leave her alone and in the crate for too long. The general rule is her age in months, plus one hour. So if she is two months old, be sure to let her out to potty every three hours. It is not a good idea to leave her in a crate for longer than 8 hours at a time when she is older. Make sure to make the crate a positive place for her. Don't make her go in the crate when you punish her, give her treats for going in the crate. Crate-training is always a good idea for a puppy. If you make it a positive place for her, it is ideal.

What to do with my German shepard with work?

Discover

So we just recently got a German Shepard puppy like last week litterally. But my wife got short orders for deployment (we are in the Air Force) what should I do when I'm gone at work for 6-8 hours a day? I love this dog but I don't know exactly what's right or wrong with him
Being home alone. Is a crate a good idea for now since he's not properly potty trained? I will not leave him outside or in a garage. This is my house loving pet.

Answer
SHEPHERD 1 - The crate should never be used for punishment. That is the fastest way to guarantee your pup will hate the crate. Remember that when you are tempted to force the pup in the crate when you are upset with him/her for making a pile, puddle or tearing up something. Remember when the pup does behavior like that, you failed to keep close enough watch on the pup. 2 - The crate should be large enough that when your dog is grown there will be room to sit, stand, turn around and stretch out fully. You may want to get a smaller crate for when she is a pup or get a crate that comes with a partition to block off a small area for the pup. Don't allow him room enough to turn a corner of the crate into a toilet. 3 - The crate should be an inviting place. Dogs are den animals, they like a den to call their own. It is their safe place, where they go to chill out, to take a nap. Or to get away from something that may be scares them a little, like the vacuum, thunder or arguing humans. Some dogs like a blanket or large towel draped over their crate to give it that cave effect. Keep the crate with the family, not stuck in the basement or garage. Dogs are pack animals and her family is now her pack. While the pup is being house trained do not use a thick absorbent pad for the bottom of the crate. You don't want something that will easily soak up all the pee. Maybe just use a towel at first. When the pup is no longer eliminating in his crate then you can put in more comfortable bedding. Most dogs like a blanket as they can bumble it up, do their nesting. Put a good chew toy in the crate. One they can not get chunks off. Put a couple of treats in the crate, make it inviting. Praise the pup for going in. 4 - Lure your pup into his crate, do not push him in. Forcing her in could cause a dislike of the crate as it will be a negative experience. After the pup has went in and out of the crate a few times and seems okay with it, not apprehensive, you can close the door when she goes in. Leave it closed, with you in the room, for about 10 minutes. Open the door when the pup is not whining. If he starts whining, wait for the whining to stop before you open the door. If you let her out while protesting you will quickly teach "whine and you come out". Not the message you want to send. As the pup gets used to the 10 minutes add another 10, and so on. When the pup is comfortable with short stays in the crate start leaving the room for short intervals 5 - While being house trained your pup should not have the run of the house. The pup should either be right with you so you can see what he is doing or crated. Some people leash the pup to them.If you are in the kitchen and the pup is in the front room, don't blame the pup for that pile or puddle you find. You were not watching close enough. Put the pup where she can not see you and clean up the mess with an enzyme cleaner. If the pup sees you cleaning the mess it will give the idea that is your job. It's okay if they see you pick up outside, but not inside. The enzyme cleaners eliminate the odor, not cover it up. You want to eliminate the smell. You can't cover it to where the dog can't smell it. Just because you can't smell it doesn't mean the dog can't. 6 - As you, and the pup, progresses make sure you use the crate some when you are home, not just when leaving the house. When you do have to leave give the pup a good long walk so she can do the deeds then have him go in the crate about 10 minutes before you go. Do not do long good-byes, reassuring the pup she will be okay. It will have the reverse effect telling the pup something is wrong. When you come home, no big immediate greeting. Ignore the pup for 10 minutes before letting him out. You don't want the pup thinking your coming and going is a big deal. 7 - To help reinforce that the crate is a good experience feed the pup her meals in the crate. Be sensitive to the pups needs, don't leave him in the crate longer than that little bladder can be controlled. At night you will have to get up and take the pup out. They can only hold their bladder for roughly 1 hour for each month of age. A 3 month old pup can hold herself roughly 3 hours. Rule of thumb, some maybe a little longer, some maybe a little less. The smaller the breed, the smaller the bladder. Do not leave the pup longer than he can wait, then be upset because there is a mess. Your fault, not the pups. 8 - Teach your pup a verbal command for getting in the crate. You pick how involved you want the command to be. Remember to when
giving a command, any command, preface it with the pups name. Do not repeat commands. That gives your dog the choice of when to respond. When she goes in give a treat and praise. 9 - Do not leave toys in the crate they can chunk pieces off and choke on. Remember rawhides are choke hazards, if you allow them do not leave the pup unattended with them. Remove your dogs collar while crated.

He is a 1 year old purebred American Eskimo. I have all his paper work showing who his parents are and who the breeder was. All his shots are up to date and he is in amazing health. I will also be giving his kennel, bed, toys, food/water dish, his food and all the other little accessories i have for him. He also has been recently groomed. I paid between 1500 and 1600 for him when he was 12 weeks old. He is also eligible to become a show dog if the next family he goes to chooses to have him become one. The only reason i have to find a new home for him is because i am never home enough to spend any time with him. Any information will be helpful.

Answer
A dog like that needs to be returned to the breeder. If he is show quality, it is probably written in the contract that you must return him if you can no longer care for him. Check your paperwork.

What type of advertising would be good for dog kennells?

My girlfriend is setting up her dog kennel's and was wondering if anybody knew a good way for advertising for people to see that her service is there we are situated in Ireland. And if anbody knows a good advertising company and if anybody does advertising cards or anything like that would be great thank you.

Answer
You can get discount business cards on the internet- I would also put up fliers at the Vet offices, pet stores and contact as many dog show people as possible. Contact the British Kennel Club for show sites and dates, meet and make contact with people. Hand out cards, do some handshaking and schmoozing. Put ads in local papers, and on the radio. Have a Grand Opening with drawings for prizes and free goodies for the dogs- Like snacks with your business card attached or munchies for the owners with your business name on petit fours in the shape of biscuits. Its lots of work but once your name is out there if she gives little extras as well as great service, word of mouth will do the rest. Good Luck!

When crossing the border from canada to the US, do they check bags?

Hi! So i'm 16 and in high school for a bit of context, and in about a month, i'm going on a school trip with 28 other students to New York City. We're going to be using a motor coach as means for transportation. I was wondering if they check carry-on bags? And do they check loaded luggage in the side of the bus? What kind of questions would they ask seeing as everyone going on the trip with me is school-organized and doing the same thing? Thanks.

Answer
They can and do check bags when they want to. They usually use a dog to check out the luggage.

You will be asked few questions if you are travelling as a group. They know you are coming and have started checking you out before you even boarded the bus to start your trip.

Smoking materials for non tobacco products is dumb to take across the border. If you must just get it on the other side.

Enjoy your visit be careful with your cash and things many pickpockets in the big city. Do not carry all your money in one pocket while out and about.

Why do we need high-end dog/cat hotels when people are homeless?

Just saw that they opened a high end hotel for dogs in Chelsea, New York City for people who just can't use a regular dog boarding kennel.

How do they come up with show dogs' names?

Inga

I love them, but I'm curious. And I think dogs from a common breeder will all share one of the names? Have any of you tried to come up with a show dog type name for your pet? We were trying it the other night and had a hoot. It was funny. "Alacazam's Sugar Coated Monty Python." LOL (don't even ask how we got to that one, i can't remember.)
Oh that is cool.
Thanks.

Answer
Good breeders insist that their kennel name is attached to the registration name. When I use to breed, I always wrote my kennel name on the AKC registration application, since the AKC won't accept any papers that have been altered. Also, some breeders choose a theme for the litter, where it's required, or at the very least suggested, that the reg. name follow that theme. Some breeders actually registered each puppy in their OWN name first, choosing each reg. name, and then transfer ownership to the buyer. That way, the breeder HAS chosen the reg. name. I never cared what my pup's call names were, but most people did try to find a common ground with the litter theme and their call name. Some examples of my litter themes were wines, cruise ships, the word eclipse, etc. Here's another example of one of my pup's names. Reg. name was *kennel name) Crimson 'N' Clover, and her call name was CC. Of all the pups I ever produced, I can say there was only one call name I hated and that was Pinky. Can you imagine a Doberman named Pinky? Yuck!

Add: My new Dobe pup's registered name is (kennel name) Molten Lava. She's a red/rust Dobe b*tch with the call name Ava, which happens to be in the last word Lava.

Add #2: Just to let you know that their *show name* IS their registered name.

how to introducing a energetic dog to two old cats?

we are getting a jack russel but she is very bouncy and energetic , she goes at other dogs and the two old cats i already have hate other cats ,whats the best way to introduce them without tearing each other apart and make them learn to get along?

Answer
The first step in the process of acclimating a dog to your cat is to provide controlled safe exposure. The dog must either be in a dog crate or on a leash in the house 100% for a long long time. At the least this period will be weeks but many times it can be months. There is no hurry. Those who rush the process are those owners who end up with problems.

I recommend the use of a dog crates. The use of a dog crate is the safest way to make sure you can control the environment. It allows you to focus on the cats while the dog is in the room.

In the beginning cats are put in a separate room before the dog is brought into the house. I always put my new dogs on leash when I bring them into the house. This shows them that coming into the house is a controlled experience and not someplace where the dog can charge around and act crazy.

In other words I ALWAYS control the animals and the environment I allow the animals to be in. That's how accidents are avoided. I don't leave things to chance. By having the dog on leash I have control of him if the cat runs and he tries to chase.

People often ask "When can the dog be off leash?" The answer is simple - when you can control the dog under distraction. If you can't call your dog to you when it is highly distracted by your cat - then the dog is not under your control and it should either be on leash, in a dog crate or wearing a remote collar.

This test can be made by made by putting the cat in the dog crate before the dog is brought into the house. The dog should be on leash. The owner can drop the leash and let the dog drags it. If the dog then gets out of control and won't mind the handler can simply grab the leash and take the dog back outside outside.

A family Kitty investigating the new smells of the new pack member

The decision to correct or not correct the dog or how hard to correct the dog depends on if you are training the dog or just testing the dog. I wrote a free ebook titled "THE THEORY OF CORRECTIONS IN DOG TRAINING" You may want to review that material.

In The Crate

Once in the crate the dog is expected to be calm and quiet. If the dog barks at the cats they are verbally scolded. If they will not stop barking we either cover the crate with a sheet, spray lemon water in the dogs face or make them wear a No-Bark collar. We normally don't use bark collars on puppies until they are 16 weeks old.

The dog is never allowed to be in the house and out of the crate unless it's on leash. It's never taken out of the crate (on leash) when the cat is in the room until it has gone ONE WEEK without barking at the cats.

This does not mean the dogs are locked in dog crates for weeks at a time. They can have free (on leash) time in the house but in the beginning the cats are always put in a different room when the dog is out.

When I get a new adult dog my first priority is to establish pack structure. I normally wait several weeks before I allow the dog to have on leash house time. This program is covered in detail in my dvd ESTABLISHING PACK STRUCTURE WITH THE FAMILY DOG If you are a new dog owner I highly recommend that you get this dvd and run your dog through this program.

Cat owners who acquire dogs have two processes going on at the same time. They should be establishing pack structure with the new dog at the same time they are teaching the dog that their cats are now part of the dogs family pack. When owners take their time there are seldom problems.
During the period of time that an adult dog spends in the crate, he can be acclimated to a muzzle. I like the wire basket muzzles we sell because they are less restrictive to the dog. Dogs accept these muzzles quicker than the plastic muzzles we sell. The down side is they are a little more expensive.

For those people who do not want to spend the money on a wire muzzle the plastic Jafco muzzles are inexpensive and work just fine. It is important to learn to put them on properly. When done incorrectly the dog could possibly get them off. We always us marker training to put muzzles on (refer to my ebook on marker training if you have questions on this)

Getting the dog used to the muzzle during these first weeks gives the dog something else to think about other than the cats in the house. After weeks of wearing it in the crate it becomes second nature for the dog to have it on. When the day comes to allow the dog to be loose in the rooms with the cats it is important to do this while the dog is on leash. If that goes well then have the dog in a muzzle.

Should the adult dog shows the slightest sign of aggression towards the cats it needs to get a correction. The severity of the correction will vary by the temperament of the dog. Some dogs simply need to be told NO !! - while other dogs require a level 10 prong collar correction.

The correction needs to be strong enough that the dog will remember it the next time it thinks about being aggressive to
