how much does it cost to ship a dog from texas to washington?

m.g

Im trying to find out how much it cost to ship a puppy from texas to washington, I found a puppy for sale on ebay classifieds.and is it legal?

Answer
It is legal to ship, but I would never buy a pup from a breeder I didn't know unless I could go pick it up. I have shipped pups many times and have had them shipped to me. Continental is the best, but if you are in Washington State, be aware that the forecasted temperature on the ground must be at least 35 degrees at the time the plane is scheduled to land otherwise your pup won't be allowed to fly. Shipping is about $100 plus the cost of the crate and vet check.

Can i use a wire dog crate cage for a bunny?

Tick

I was looking on ebay and i typed in rabbit cages and there expensive so then i typed in dog kennels and the cages look the same and the dog ones are cheaper.
It wasnt wire on the bottom of the cage they had a tray that you can take out.

Answer
Dog crates and exercise pens are good for rabbits...
Make sure they can't get out or get caught between the bars...
another great alternative is NIC panels...
that is what we use to make our hutches...
I believe in the US they are available at Target...at a fairly decent price.
The nice thing about NIC's is that you can change their size/shape and add to them as needed!

When were you able to allow your dog freedom in the house?

dog crate training 101 on Wooden Dog Crate | Dog 101
dog crate training 101 image

Treehug

We are using the crate training method...so she is in the crate when we got out or I cannot fully supervise her, which is pretty rare...how soon before I can give her free reign of the house and not worry about accidents?

Answer
Depends on the dog. Some dogs pick up quickly, some take years. I have one dog that was 7 years old before I trusted him loose in the house because he had a personal vendetta agains my couch cushions.

With my own dogs and foster dogs, we do it gradually. First they have to go 2 weeks without pottying in the house when I'm home. They also have to go 2 weeks without tormenting the cats. If they can do that, I give them run of the bedroom at night. After 2 weeks without incident, we try run of the house at night. For some reason, it doesn't matter if I'm awake or asleep, as long as I'm in the house they behave. LOL!

If they prove to be reliable loose at night, I try them loose when I leave. First it's just while I'm outside mowing the lawn or working in the yard. If they do okay with that, then I'll actually get in the car and leave for half an hour or so. If they do okay with that, I leave them for 4 hours, go to work, and come home at lunch to check on them. If they do okay, I leave them loose when I go back to work.

I've had some dogs that can't make it past loose in the bedroom. I've had some that within a matter of a month have 100% house privileges. I've had some that have had house privieges for weeks or months and then decide to act up - then we go back to crate trainin 101. It all depends on the dogs.

I do keep the crates out with the doors open at all times. There have been times I've had 2-3 dogs loose in the house and come home to find all of them asleep in their crates anyway.

Training tips for my german shepherd puppy?

Jasmin

I would be interested to hear other peoples training methods and tips, particually on heel, and other more advanced commands, and even tricks, as I am due to have my GSD pup and will begin advanced training right away. Also with regards to 'puppy training pads' is this not just teaching them it is ok to go in the house? Appreciate your opinions and help.

Answer
When my GSD was a puppy I just brought him outside about every 30 minutes(excluding night time), he never had an accident in the house. He was put in a crate for a little less than a year for at night and when we left the house. To teach him how to heel we started with a harness, but that didn't really work out. So we switched to something called a gentle leader for a little bit, he hated it, but it worked. Once he heeled on command we switched to a pinch collar. Also, to teach tricks I used a book called "101 Dog Tricks", a lot of great ideas and easy to follow :) And remember to socialize the puppy with other dogs and people! I would say this is especially important for GSD, they can be very protective.

Tips for a first time rabbit owner, please?

dog crate xl size on poliestere pieghevole gabbia del cane cassa 42

Julianna

I'm a first time rabbit owner who has some questions! I am very excited about getting my new pet rabbit, and I've been reading about them and their needs for the past few days.
However, I still have some questions.

1. Is it absolutely MANDATORY to get your rabbit spayed or neutered?
2. Are they happy alone sometimes or do they NEED companions?
3. What sort of fruits/vegetables should I avoid feeding them?
4. What kind of bedding(if any at all) should I buy for my rabbit?
5. How big does their cage need to be? Is it better if I get a two story cage or a regular one?
6. How do I know whether my rabbit is healthy or unhealthy, and what are some ways I could tell if my rabbit got sick?

Thank you!

Answer
1. Getting them spayed or neutered is a good idea. Females do have a high risk of cancer and you really won't know until it is far advanced. Both males and female can have hormonal behaviours such as aggressiveness, humping, spraying, and not using the litter box. Some of these behaviours can really impact your ability to do much with your rabbit and people do give up their rabbit due to hormonal behaviours. A spayed or neutered rabbit does generally make a better house pet. I would get a female done just for the health benefits, but males are more due to behaviour. If you want to bond, both rabbits should be spayed or neutered to prevent breeding and so they can live together peacefully.

2. Rabbits can be fine living alone. Some do like to have a companion, but some actually prefer to be alone. Bonding can take time, you can't just put them together and hope for the best. If you did get a second rabbit, you would need to be prepared for them to not get along.

3. Leafy green veggies are best. Fruit is high in sugar as are carrot, so are best given in small amount. Veggies high in calcium should be limited as they can contribute to bladder stones, sludge and other issues. There are a variety of lists of safe and unsafe foods to feed.

4. Rabbits can be litter trained, so do not need litter in the whole cage. You can use fleece or a towel to provide something soft and give traction. In the litter box, wood or paper pellets are good to use and safe. Wood pellets are quite cheap and very effective.

5. The bigger the cage the better. Most sold at pet stores are too small for an adult rabbit. Look into wire dog crates (XL size), x-pens, or NIC / C&C cages. These all tend to be cheaper than a cage, bigger and more suitable for a rabbit. You can add a level, but still need a good floor space.

6. One major sign that a rabbit is not feeling well is they are not eating. Not peeing or pooping does follow the not eating. This is when they start going into GI stasis and can be deadly quite quickly. Tooth problems are common as well, look for drooling and not wanting to eat some foods, the front teeth are easy to see if they are overgrown. You will get to know the rabbit and can watch for things that are different. If you think there might be a problem, call the vet. My friend's rabbit recently had surgery for a big bladder stone and the only obvious symptom was straining to pee and very frequent tail lifting.

Do I need a large puppy crate for my lab puppy?

Kitttay

I already have a coated wire crate with a plastic bottom tray that is only big enough for a regular pillow to fit in and tall enough for the puppy to sit up. My idea was to just use it as a "den" and safe cozy bed for the puppy and to calm him down and put blankets over at night.

but my boyfriend says I need a crate big enough for a water bowl and a bed and a puppy pad for when we go out, but I was just going to use a empty room with the door open and a baby gate up for the puppy when i go out (obv with his water bowl toys puppy pad etc. and no dangerous things around like wires or objects) the room is a very small bedroom that only fits a queen size bed with no room around it.

Do I NEED a XL crate or can I use the empty room and the crate for nightime?

Answer
For a new puppy you just want it in the crate. No pillows blankets or puppy pad. Puppies do not soil in their own dens. They need to be taken out at regular intervals. The crate should be just big enough for the dog so he/she learns not to soil in there. ( the puppy will have accidents at first its a given) that is why you dont put blankets or bedding in there until they can hold it all night long. When you go out for a couple hours the puppy should go in his or her crate but never for longer than 2-3hours a day. So, here is why your bf is wrong. On the other hand a whole room is also too big for the puppy to be left alone....they can be destructive if left alone for long periods of time. What I suggest and have read extensively on is the use of an exercise pen for use when you are gone for long periods of time, if you start to notice destructive behavior. You can place the crate onside the exercise pen along with toys and a water bowl. They also make models that attach to the sides of the exercise pen. It is very important in housetraining and prevention of separation anxiety that you research every possible solution for your new puppy. The puppy pad can be placed inside the exercise pen at the opposite side from where they sleep. That's where the dog naturally will eliminate. Its okay to feed your dog in the crate especially during hectic morning schedules but they should be taken out before and after a feeding. Eating triggers elimination in young dogs. Using the crate only as its den is the right idea. You want the dog to feel safe and secure which is what the crate is intended for. You are right using confinement over crating. Its healthier and the dog shouldn't be crated for longer than 2-3 hours except at night.

What's the cheapest way to travel from NYC to Boston with a small dog?

best dog boarding nyc on , Veterinarians, Vets, Grooming, Boarding, Dogs, Cats, Kennels, Dog ...
best dog boarding nyc image

MossWahoo

Hi!

I have an 18-lb French Bulldog who fits nicely in a Sherpa duffel bag. We will need to travel between NYC and Boston around the holiday. I have kind of a tight budget... renting a car is pretty steep. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Answer
Amtrak and bus companies won't let you bring your dog with you on board. And, if they catch you smuggling your dog on board, they'll kick you off. However, local train services might let you take your dog and you would have to call them to find out. Otherwise, you're left with two options: drive or fly.

If these options are too expensive, the only alternative is to board the dog while you're gone or have someone stay at your house to take care of him. And, the cost of boarding the dog every day is probably more than the daily cost of renting a car.

Do other dogs get freaked out by skateboarders?

Zoe

My dobe is really good when walking on leash and she's a really friendly dog, with one exception. She freaks out anytime a skateboarder whizzes by! She's used to all sorts of city noises since she's lived in San Francisco and NYC most of her life, but without fail, she will bark and growl at any skateboarder! It's really bizarre! Does anybody else have the same experience with their dog? Is there anything I can do to help her get over this strange paranoia of skateboarders?

Answer
You can help the dog. You need to understand counter conditioning and desensitization. You change how the dog feels about skate boards, so instead of being scared it think, hey cool, those noisy fast things that make cheese fall from the sky!

This site will help you understand how to get started. Don't let the dog be so close to the boarders that she freaks, you have to start far enough away so the dog can tolerate them and eat treats.

Is it safe to take my dogs to Australia from USA?

Clara

I plan on moving to Aussie next year and I need to take my 2 small dogs, they are healthy and are not short nosed, I know that has something to do with the limitations of the dogs riding cargo. I am only allowed to take them in cargo because we are traveling over the oceans.

IS IT SAFE?
SHOULD I NOT DO IT?

I hear about so many deaths amongst pets riding airlines.

IS THERE ANY OTHER OPTIONS I HAVE? What airlines are recommended for pets? Help!

Answer
We brought our Maltese and our cat over from Aussie to the US and it wasn't a problem but we hired a company to handle it for us (crating, documentation, etc). They rode in cargo the whole time in a special pressurized cabin. You'll need to get them vaccinated so go to the Australian Consulate website www.usa.embassy.gov.au and call them to see what you need to do. They will also have to be quarantined for 6 months upon entry into Australia because there is no rabies in Australia.

What's the difference between a kennel and a dog crate?

dog crates uk only on Our Dog Crate / Dog Cage Features Include:
dog crates uk only image

Corinne

I learned from the dictionary that a crate is a wicker basket, then what is a dog crate? Isn't it the same as a dog house?

Answer
In the UK (or at least my part of it), a kennel is made of wood or plastic and is usually an outside shelter. I think the US terminology is 'doghouse'. It can also be a structure of individual outdoor runs and shelters for many dogs. A crate would generally be perceived as a travel-cage for transporting a dog when outside the house; crate-training whereby a metal or plastic cage or crate is used for indoor housetraining is fairly novel here.

Essentially, the words are interchangeable.

How to make a dog crate cover (UK)?

Margaret

I want to make a cover for my dog's crate but have no idea how to go about it!

In centimetres it's roughly 55 (w) x 79 (l) x 63 (h) - The crate has a label on the front that says Rosewood Pet Products #078173

I'm not very experienced with sewing so have no idea how to choose which material, how to work out how much material I'll need, and how to make a pattern for it etc etc. Ideally I want a material that doesn't fray too much.

Can you help me by guiding me through this step-by-step OR can you suggest somewhere I can buy one this size?

Please help!

Thank you :)

How to get a dog in a crate?

dog crates great danes image

won_smart_

My dog, Faith, is 3 years old and has never been in a crate before. But for 4H which is Showmanship, obedience, and agility i need her to get in a crate between classes. Like someplace she can relax.

She is a Great Dane so i cant go in the crate with her.

Answer
Well, I would start by just setting the crate down and just letting her sniff it and get used to it. Make it a fun place to go; place rawhide bones, treats, toys, anything she enjoys inside so she knows it is not dangerous. I would put a blanket with your scent on it inside so she can always feel comfortable alone. Now that's getting her to go inside. Once she is inside I would close the door (leaving some sort of entertainment object inside with the dog) and leave the room. Maybe for just a minute at first. Then come back in (to show her you wouldn't leave her) and praise her with love and treats. Over time increase the time were you are gone from the room.
Hope this helps!

How mch does it cost to own a great Dane?

germadirk

I may be adopting a 1 year old great Dane. I'm curious to see how much the expenses are? Yes I will be giving him hwt medicatio , and won't be feeding him generic brand diets!

Answer
A good quality food will cost anywhere from $35 -$65 every couple of weeks depending on brand you feed...some great choices Taste of the Wild, Orijen, Acana, Merrick, From 4 Star, Canidae ALS, Canidae Grain Free, Earthborn just to name a few..I feed my Danes Taste of the Wild.... TOTW is a highly recommended food with many Dane owners/breeders as is Orijen.(Eagle Pack is not as well received or recommended as it use to be..fewer & fewer Dane people feed or recommend it any more. It has fallen out of favor since it was bought out and the formula changed..there are far better and more highly recommended foods out there now.)
Heartworm preventative depends on weight of your Dane, brand used and cost at a particular vet practice...so it can range from $100 - $200 per year Flea product again depends on size of your Dane, brand & vet practice...anywhere from $110 - $ 220 for 6 months worth.
Toys, beds, crates etc...depend on how many you buy, what you get, where you get them, etc so these can end up being as cheap or as expensive as you make it...obedience classes can range from $75 to over $100 There is no cut and dried cost to Dane ownership it depends on way to many factors....if the Dane came from a rescue or an irresponsible breeder then you could be looking at health issues at some point..
***a well bred well cared for Dane can live a good healthy life into their teens, many do just that. The average life of a Dane is 10 years which is the same for many breeds of dog...people are so use to seeing ill bred Danes that are unhealthy and shortlived that they automatically think this is the norm...it is NOT...also a well bred Dane is no more prone to health issues then any other breed/mix.Danes do NOT have health issues because of their size!!! The truth is Danes are less prone to hip dysplasia then Labs & Goldens, Less prone to heart disease then Dobermans, no more prone to bloat then any other deep chested breed...**********

How much yardage of fabric do I need to cover a dog crate ?

dog crates 30 image

Erika

I have been trying to figure out how much yardage I will need to make fabric covers for my dogs crates. One crate is 30" L x 21" W x 24"H and the other crate is 42" L x 28"W x 31"H

The fabric is 58" wide.

PLEASE HELP ME !!!

THANK YOU :)

Answer
Why not use a sheet!! I've done this with my crates - cheap, less fuss and very effective.

ps To the person who suggests otherwise, actually covering the top and 3 sides of a crate is by far the best way to use a crate - it makes them into a little den, a safe and quite spot for a dog to take a nap in peace. And it shuts out any drafts that may be around where the crate is situated. If the dog is crated, and in a draft, he stands no chance of getting out of it.

Does anyone know where I can get a dog crate that will fit my car?

Popcornz_Y

I have a 2007 fiesta, but I can't seem to find a dog crate that will fit in the boot without lowering the rear seats. The dog crate needs to at least fit my cocker spaniel and be about 30" length or more. The only ones I can find are just a tiny bit too deep for the length. Does anyone know where I can get one that will fit or get one custom made?

Answer
The crate that I have for my dog can be taken apart and put back together quite easily, and it's just a basic crate.
But if your'e looking for a crate for the dog to be in while driving...I'd try one made out of material, so its more flexible.

My girlfriend is setting up her dog kennel's and was wondering if anybody knew a good way for advertising for people to see that her service is there we are situated in Ireland. And if anbody knows a good advertising company and if anybody does advertising cards or anything like that would be great thank you.

Answer
You can get discount business cards on the internet- I would also put up fliers at the Vet offices, pet stores and contact as many dog show people as possible. Contact the British Kennel Club for show sites and dates, meet and make contact with people. Hand out cards, do some handshaking and schmoozing. Put ads in local papers, and on the radio. Have a Grand Opening with drawings for prizes and free goodies for the dogs- Like snacks with your business card attached or munchies for the owners with your business name on petit fours in the shape of biscuits. Its lots of work but once your name is out there if she gives little extras as well as great service, word of mouth will do the rest. Good Luck!

Do they make misters that you can put around your dogs kennel outside?

GLAMOROUS

I was wondering if they made a mister (like a soaker hose) that you can put around your dogs kennel. I know the summer is coming and I want my dog to be as comfortable as possible while I'm @ work. And I was wondering if a mister would help him be cool?. I have no room in my garage to put him there and I already have one dog in the house and don't think I can trust them both to be in the house together while I'm not there.

Answer
Sure you can. Just go to Home Depot or Lowes and get the ones ment for the garden and rig it up for the dog! Also get a timer this way you can set it so your dog won't get soaked. It's very inexpensive and a great way to keep your dog cool durring the hot summer day! Just measure out what you will need and then get the right number of mister heads and hose and go to work!

Answer
Make sure you have the money to properly care for a dog.
Vet expenses are $500. - $1200. the first year.
Pups should remain it the litter until 12 weeks old to learn social skills such as bite inhibition.
Patience and lots of love.
Praise and reward.
Google positive reinforcement training
House train. Crate train.
Do not hit. Do not rub the dog's nose in it.
Do not let the pup do anything you do not want it to do as an adult.
Pups have lots of energy. Pups must be walked and exercised every day.
Feed raw or home cooked.
If feeding kibble go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
Select a premium 5 or 6 star food.
Enroll in an obedience class.

Answer
It's going to cost more than $500. Don't get me wrong I'm sure you have already found one somewhere for $500 but the odds of that pup's parents having been thoroughly health-tested are slim to none. That's just what you need -- a $500 puppy that will end up costing you $3,000 in vet bills during the first year....

And once you've found and afforded a puppy and your parents have paid for food, then who pays for the puppy's first vet visit? How about the second, third and fourth visits? (Puppies have to go through a series of vaccinations.) What about dog bed? crate? collar and leash? toys? spay/neuter surgery? puppy classes so that you have a well-socialized dog?

And once all those things are paid for, who's going to care for it once you go back to school? It will still need to be walked and let out several times during the day, and it won't be fully housebroken by the time you go back to school in the fall so there will still be much training to do or else you'll have messes all over the house... your parents would be just thrilled about that...

Another question - initial pet costs.?

The creatu

What are the initial costs for a dog? Such as the buying price, neutering, etc. Thanks knowledgeable people.

Answer
Cost of pet: $0-2,000+ sometimes you find a stray, sometimes you invest in a pup with titled, tested parents. The averages would probably be $50-200 for a shelter dog, $1000-2000 for a pup from a responsible breeder.

Spaying/Neutering: $0-300, many rescues come already altered and there are many low-cost programs for $25-50, but a traditional vet will charge $100-200 and if there are exceptional circumstances (like a b**** that is very small or a spay/abort) it may be $300.

Equipment: budget $20 for a small dog's crate, up to $150 for a giant breed's crate, $50 for puppy collar, adult collar, training collars/harnesses, license tag, and quality leashes, and $50-100 for a bed, toys, etc depending on how elaborate you want to get.

Initial vet visits: puppy shot series, worming, and check-ups for the first year: $50-100

Emergency fund for replacing the chewed-up coffee table, surgery to get the car keys back (puppies eat weird things!), etc, budget $500 for the first year.

Other expenses during your dog's lifetime including training classes, take at least an eight-week obedience class ($150-300 per eight weeks, more for some dog sports), food (I usually assume $1/day for a medium dog and approximate from there for a smaller or larger one), continued vet care (including flea prevention, worming, and emergencies) for $100-500 per year, and equipment replacements or upgrades of $50-100 per year.

Cost of getting a dog, low estimate: $750 for the first year (if dog is free and already altered and no emergencies occur), high estimate: $4000 for the first year (for well-bred pup, surgery, top-of-the-line equipment and at least one training class and one emergency/big puppy damage). And then about $500-1000 for each year after that, assuming no major problems.

Is it ok to crate my kittens at night outside?

dog crates for large dogs on ... on dog crate - Showman dog cage - 42ins large dog crate. Two doors
dog crates for large dogs image

Victoria

I just got two new kitties. They were found in an outdoor shed at our neighbors house and we decided to take two home so they wouldn't be lonely while they adjusted. We intend for them to be outdoor cats once they are grown and we have taken time to adapt them and once they are up to date on shots and fixed. I have had them in our back hallway for a few nights and they have been perfect angels. We have been letting them out during the day to play and love on them also. Tonight at bed time though, they began to climb their enclosure and meow for us to come pet them. I don't want them to make a habit of this at night so I transferred all their things ( litter pan, enclosed bed and blankies, food and water, and toys) into a extra large dog crate and they have ample space to run around. Only thing is we have it on our front porch. I just want to hear some opinions as these are the first kittens we have had in years, on weather or not this will be ok. Our porch is secure, safe from any predators it's enclosed out of the elements and we live away from an area where anyone would steal them. If there were any reason they would be unsafe I would not put them out there but I have a husband who rises very early and a small child who will wake if the kitties get too rambunctious. Thanks in advance for any input.

Answer
A heavy duty crate is what you need to train them. Since you will be housing two of them, something bigger is needed. You can check out http://pets.become.com/heavy-duty-dog-crate for some options. However, training your cats, like dogs is important. Once, they get into the habit of night patting, etc. they will expect it more. Leave some toys in their crate. Leave them outside only once you and your family are awake.

The porch should be relatively safe. Also, as they grow older, they will learn to venture out more, but as of now, you need to keep them in a secure and safe environment and be vigilant! Check on them on and off, you can also get a barrier for the porch to make sure they donât venture off. Their threat right now is not only predators, but other pets too!

How can I keep raccoons away from my kittens?

MeruuMeruu

I've recently gotten three kittens, and they unfortunately have to be outside cats. At night they sleep in a large dog crate, with a bed, and food and water in case someone doesn't wake up to let them out since some mornings I work. A few nights ago we were having problems with a raccoon coming up onto the porch every night and terrorizing them, reaching into the crate. We dealt with that on not to long ago, but tonight two more appeared, and they managed to MOVE the crate. I'm freaked out, because my boyfriend has told me he's had a kitten get killed by a raccoon. How can I keep these raccoons away from the kittens?

DISCLAIMER: I would much prefer they be indoor cats, but my boyfriends mom will not allow it as my boyfriend and his little brother are both very allergic. It is still a better option than someone else having them, if not for me they would be left outside without so much as a crate to protect them. I'm doing my very best to keep them safe and healthy despite them living outdoors. Please don't answer with "You should give them to someone who will keep them inside" or anything like that. People around here don't really have indoor cats.

Answer
racoons are very annoying animals, they'll keep going back until you move the cage places, or set out traps to catch the coons in, and then go let them out in the forest or something. if you dont want to get rid of them their isnt much you can do.. racoons are nasty buggers..
if all that doesnt work, get the shotgun out that'll get rid of the problem haha.

I am going to adopt a dog in a few months either from the local shelter or a rescue group. I have heard that it is better to adopt a younger dog or puppy so it can grow with my daughter. I will be going to the shelter, but am unsure of an adult or puppy. I will always supervise my child no matter what I choose. Has anyone had or know anyone who has adopted an adult dog and has a small child? Any problems with that? Any positive or negitive stories would be great.

Answer
I reccomend going through a rescue group that will help you find the right dog for your situation. Going to the local animal shelter may be risky just because the people there probably don't know much about the temperment of the dogs. They are probably kenneled all the time, and are already frustrated. I imagine that you don't have time to break behaviour problems in a large unruly beast while you take care of a toddler. I would find a breed you are interested in and then contact the rescue group for that breed through the AKC. Alot of breed rescue groups keep their dogs in foster homes where you can talk to someone who know alot about each particular dog. Also NO KILL shelters will do the same. Some breeds I recommend for kids are beagles, labs or goldens, pitbulls or pit mixes, and gentle breeds like great danes

What is the difference between a american Staffordshire bull terrier and a pitbull?

ai.spider

I have this dog and i don't know how to tell if is a pit or a Staffordshire.

Answer
I have a huge long explanation for this, but I'll try to keep it simple.

Essentially, there are TWO different breeds, which originated from the same stock.

AKC registers dogs called American Staffordshire Terriers, they are bigger, more muscular, with squarer heads. They are showing dogs, not working ones.

UKC registers dogs called American Pit Bull Terriers. These dogs are tall, slender, athletic, with longer, wedgier heads. They are working dogs.

AmStaff and APBT originated from the same stock, however, when AKC decided to accept the breed into it's registry, it didn't want to have the words "pit bull" associated with it's organization, so they changed the name to Staffordshire Terrier, and later, American Staffordshire Terrier.

Here are some picture references:

There is also a breed called the American Bully (Sometimes referred to as an APBT, but they are NOT APBTs, they are MIXED BRED dogs (admittedly by Dave Wilson, the man who "created" this breed) They are SEPARATE from the REAL APBT

American Bully:

http://www.bulldogbreeds.com/breeders/pics/american_pit_bull_terrier_35085.jpg

There is also a few breeds called Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bull Terrier which some people confuse with other bully breeds as well.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a small, power packed mini dog, with round, bulbous heads. They stand less than 2 feet tall (normally 1- 1.5 feet)

Bull Terriers (come in standard and mini sizes) are egg headed shaped dogs, which are compact, but SOLIDLY built.

my dog is a fox terrier, a small to medium sized dog, (about 15 pounds?) and he needs a new dog crate and bed because he out grew his old ones. how much could these cost me at my local pet store?

Answer
Have you tried Craigslist.com or Ebay.com? second hand shops might have them..but a small crate can be about $15-20 at walmart about the same for a dog bed too.

What can I use to stop the underside of dog crate from "sweating"?

Amy

My rabbit is housed in a large dog crate, with the plastic slide-out floor cover in spongey shelf liner. He only sleeps in the cage at night. When I move the cage to clean it, I see that the underside of the wire crate and plastic floor have sweated. Is there anything I can put on the floor of the cage to absorb the heat and prevent this?

Answer
Sounds weird but go to acraft store. In there, you can find all the things to make dried flower arrangements. There are some drying agents that you can used, some in crystal or dust form. These will help absorb the moisture and dispel it through out the day. Just make sure that your rabbit can't get to it.

I chose a different dog and the answer was way easier to find. Thank you all for your answers I think Yahoo Answers is a great tool.

Answer
Contact a breeder and ask how much they charge for their pups. I know that an Icelandic Sheepdog from a reputable breeder runs around $1500-$2000. Not that its the same or anything, but that is a rare breed from a similar region.

So do some research online, locate some breeders and call them and ask. These links should get you started.

Whatever tips or advice ANYONE can give would be wonderful...

My family and I (Fiance', 2 Step-Children here a week and at their mothers a week and a 3 year old English Bulldog) decided to rescue/adopt a puppy back in November of last year. His name is Rowdy, now a 1 year old Bull Terrier/Jack Russell mix, 35lb red-headed creature that lives up to his name.

A little background: Herky, the Bulldog, is a very gregarious dog. He loves people, he is a typical lazy, chill/relax and watch TV type of dog. We all were aware of the energy level of a terrier and thought it would be great for Herky (he needs to loose a few pounds). We wanted a dog to play with Herky because he is so social. Herky went to training but is still very much Bull-headed. But, we got the basics down. I have had dogs/animals my entire life and have read/done a lot of training. I used to work with horses and now Intern at a local zoo. I do my research and reading. My fiance' expects my new dog to be a 'Herky' as he likes to say. And trust me, I have explained to him that's not going to happen for a while. He's not a real patient man... take that as you will.

Now to Rowdy, the GOOD: He's a sweetie. He's incredibly smart. He has started to understand the concepts of basic obiendence. He sits, lays and shakes for now. We are working on loose leash, stay and come. Come is getting better. His stay is really bad. He seems very ADD, but, I chalk that up to 'puppy'.

The issues: I have seen a VAST improvement in the walking department. We use a prong collar. I have used these collars on my Rottie (no longer with us) and other larger dogs growing up. Now, I know I'm going to get heat for this but it is the ONLY thing that works. He does not do well with the easy leader, the easy walker and a regular harness. Trust me, I've tried them. And bought all of them. He had literally drug me across a football field one time. I tried the standing still, the waiting, the treats/clicker. NOTHING is working. He pulls like a sled dog. He jumps at dogs walking by. He actually jumped towards a dog and flipped over and landed on his back/head really hard the other day. His hair stands up when dogs bark at him or if he sees another dog. However, this doesn't happen at the dog park for some reason. This dog is destroying every thing we have and whatever he can get in his mouth. Comforter on my bed, an ottoman, various area rugs, PILLOWS, shoes and a chlorinator from our pool (with chlorine in it, didn't eat it, crunched on the tablets though). He has toys, chewies, ropes rawhide's, balls and of course, my other dog to play with. Its almost like a game. He stops when we either: A) squirt him with a squirt bottle B) Yell C) command 'drop it'/'leave it' (which works wonders now).

Family: My family is very upset with things getting chewed on. My house is a MESS ALL THE TIME! My fiance gave me the 'its me or the dog' speech. I talked him into another 60-90 days. I give him Zyrtec for allergies and that usually helps with the hyper-ness (unintentional, I promise!) I want to help him and I want to be better for him but I'm loosing my mind. I don't think we were ready for this... BIG regrets. I know its probably us. I know I'm doing something really wrong. Or we are.

We have a 'Behaviorist' coming out on Saturday (tomorrow) so I'll update then.

Sorry for rambling... I'm distraught. I didn't rescue him for nothing. I don't want to give up but I don't want to loose my family because of a dog.

HELP PLEASE! and thank you
A couple things:

1. He is fixed. Has been for awhile.

2. He is crate trained. However; he pulls anything we put over it into the kennel and destroys it. He likes to look out I assume.

3. He is friendly. Enjoys people. Just acts agressive when walking on a leash.

I'm going to try both the gentle leader (nose harness) as well as a 30 ft lounge lead in order to allow him to run and I'll make a 'flirt pole' with a toy at the end so he can jump and play!

Answer
For the first problem of chewing and destroying furniture, etc: Anything other than furniture should be picked up - shoes, items of clothing, toys, school supplies, etc. should be put in closets or up where he can not reach them. This is a job for each and everyone in your household to learn to pick up after themselves. Really no excuse for a messy house with things lying about when there are so many people living there that are fully capable of keeping things neat and tidy. When you're gone, this dog MUST be crated. Rather than take up space here, just Google Crate Training and you'll find plenty of resources.

Second: While you may have done lots of training in your past and owned animals all your life, it doesn't sound like you've had much experience with a very energetic breed(s) of dogs. It would be a good idea to enlist the help of a professional trainer (one-on-one) so that he can teach you the proper methods of training this dog. And also suggest a really good exercise program for a dog with so much pent up energy. Good hard games of Frisbee out back or at the park, lots of fetch and two LONG walks everyday would be in order. A tired dog is a good dog.

I have bred, trained and shown dogs (professionally for a while, but now retired), and this dog does not sound beyond hope by any means. I seen and handled far worse cases, that turned out wonderfully.

If it were my money, I would cancel the behaviorist (the dog's just unruly) and put my money on a good professional dog trainer. I doubt it will take a good one long to put things in order with the dog.

Best of luck!

ADD: Those Halties and Gentle Leaders are nothing but gimmicks. They don't teach the dog anything. The flirt pole is a good idea for exercise, but eliminate any long lines on him. He must learn that free time is off leash, and structured exercise and obedience come with any type of leash or line on him. Rather than using your money for a bunch of gimmicks/crutches, I urge you to go with the professional trainer. You'd be surprised what you can learn.

I buoy, did you? Both Sal and Ella, Tony and Alan (âIll if too bottle-fed, am I?â) do not. God! A toga! Ed in a Roman one, rehung! Was I, M.P. et al., to get a map? Also get salt? I, hospital lab to offer, am, or felt to be, no fool â a hero.

Will it sleep? No, melting is sad ice. Vital re-push to be raid, I assume. Deer, both sacred roes, Leroy (a doter, eh?) has lived for. I, apt sales repâs idiot to greens, revere vendors selling or fat egg-nog reps.

Murder OâMalley, my mini mate â gun on rack. Calory total: liver, a bad nut or all I wanted (âet puree garnieâ): lots. âDo, oh do, ogle bald racer,â Iâm dared â N.U.S. bar at six.

Esparto, dodoâs lair to name it, not to cage bees, elasticated, is nice. Esteem, as up in space, cite bad local lions, eye can emit now. G.I. boots in ugly rebel or ratâs potato gin (eh?) were hot. Pull a bad egg â epic, I note, no regal slip in it. Ram can ⦠(Iâve lost idea!)

Tarred nets, rifles, nitro, gold â no maid stole it. Put it, rat, back or if Sam (âXâ) sees sub on televised rising, I sedate Goths. I wonât â no way.

Alps, idyllic stage set, are not so gas-emitting, I educe. To nose, peer, far off, I tip mats onto lane. Power grew or got deep so I dare not stir. Of deer, billions sell. I ate lump â mad sign, I do cede â tonsil a pain, acne pang is sad also. Elm I help pot, live â tubâs sold; a ban or a bar, even so, elms, Iâd assume, live for. Effused am I not, up in a manor, not all up in a mess.

Open if a main A.C. plug is in it.

Late men I fed late â pasties or not. âRaptureâ by a maestro prevents a vast sum erased.

Argon in units, albeit at solid eye level, sits in a ⦠(I presume not) ⦠tube, son. No eyes: a hot laser â is Ed wary?

Mermaid, ex- evoker of all A.B.s, I flog. Nil I repaid. Emotion! Emotion, oh so do I dare, woe!

Wee yap-yap dogâs nameâs Ron. An idol lacks a dime tip, or did, as today a potato in a pitta slice costs a lot â tons. A wet adder ate more hay. Ugh! So, pal, ice cost on top? No, miss, Iâm a two-sided rat, erred nut, I base it on erotic ill; It is I, red now; it is debris, rot.

Alf, an idle he-man as âmaster animal liferâ did time, ran off at speed, but a G.I. did nab an idle if dim nit. Upwards rewards are natural lifeâs words, God. Fill up guts, boy, live now or do not emit one later. A rat on site got flu.

Gaelic, Iâm odd Erin, Iâm Eire, esteemed islet. So hostile rifts ebb. Mob, I.R.A., dare not net R.U.C. â no cotton. Erase not, so I dare not nettle men in red rose garden â Iâm in it.

Stop late men if foreign at nine. Esplanades, simple hotel, bath, gin â king is Edward IX; obese; Ma is no pure mater. Go! Rise, sir; part anon.

I also rehash tests â âOâ Level Latin, Italian. S.A.S., so, to track radar. Often nobleman exists alone â not sales reps â I do. Trade ceiling, i.e. final part, lures open if evil trade.

Volga River rises on no steppe. Elsinore has a hamlet â Oh, Bard, row on Avon!

A sacred robot nurses simple heroâs eye; dabs on it a lemon. Gas, iron, Essex often stops, suffers in a mania. Ron fixes several crofts, acer of maple. Hot, I fish; cold, I arise laden; if diary amiss, I know it set no car off. Foe-damned ruby motor, it only rebels.

Ian I swept aside to visit, in a bar of moorside red, Romanis met in a more mossy ale den. Inspired am I, Oswald. A bay bed is nine p on top. No name, niftiness- elder saw it. Oh no! Saw top wet starâs pool â part star, part otter. Refer a baron to idiot, Tony, as I did.

Smart ones use submarine.

Poet, arch-super-artiste, grew artistic. I lost rattle; my amiable, not oh so old, able to hang up, mina, can deliver it, so true. âTa, matey!â â says so Boston (Mass.) elder I hit.

On file S.A.E. was sent â I wrote poster re fat on side, volume one â loved it, never off it, I was in. Aide mocks a manic; I mock comic, I nap: too bad I had a fit, I too. Bottle ban odd, I go drop mine, ergo trial ceded a fatness, sober if not so, or a test is debased.

A vet is agog â no petâs in a cask â corgi dog, royal pet, a risk no more.

Lob a rod at a man I meet. Sewer delays pit fires â a bedlam in a dig â iron ore rots it. No devil is a hero â Nimrod.

At a mall a cod is all I get. I bet on Eva, so Tim ate whole eel bait, I pay tip, Eva had a hood sewed. No B.A. gave car to Nero, we were not to rev it and we lost a trail; Iâm a free pill, I wrong a man. I erase gap; to help miss it, I fill a set. A gent in ire knocks a cadet.

Animalsâ gel on spoon â it is so true to basics â Iâd gel; too bad I hide kangaroo baths â I lived as I won raffle, flew as I did go, dash, to my, also too tired now, star comedy: A wan, inept, upset Iâm retired, nut; its ilk, nicer. Nettle feels a sore; sad, I did no panic in a pain, am an ill or tired, nude, based item; it is a spot.

Semitone, not a tone, radios emit; no, on tape; elsewhere itâs a tone.

Tail is not on; pots open on foot, even on it, so let oven (on, it is) simmer â a hotpotâs a stupid ham stew.

Loop a loop, animal â cat up in air.

Both sacks I rate by apple hewn in elderâs garden if it rates, I was aware â tasted a core.

Zones or areas, Annie, cap, so twelfth girl, lass, alas, simply (alpha beta) done, Kate. Tadpole won top Oscar, Obadiah, âOâ Level axed.

Argon gas did emit no straw, so ozone sure drops argon, oozes up in Ruthâs ample hotel or sits afar off in a bar â of elastic, is it?

I hate cinema; cinema dogs in a mass. Older effusion to old â lost, is it now? Reward: a mood.

All upsets it.

Radar trails an Islamic educer of a riling issue, damages it in Israel. Ceiling is, I say, a plan, a case of one deck. Can knees sag as one Latin image elates, I wonder?

Oboe diverts ultra foe, volatile bald ogre â push to berate; Iâd do, ogre. So, p.m., Oct. first, never play organâs stops â lay or put it up in ward ten.

Final cast like rowing â I sedate play, old as am I, God! Am I! On tacks I ran; I saw rats. A Gemini tramp is May born.

I back colonyâs sober omen of lack of lace. Rome, not Paris, a wonder.

Obey retail law â a noose killed oyster. Reflate my ball, a water-filled one. Disabuse no name of emanating issue.

Damsels, I note, vary tastes so cost now desserts. I say no! Try taste more honeyed. A bad nemesis at naff ruse will upset. I, mere Satanist, e.g. rater of a devil â (Oh wrong is a sin!) â Iâm no devilâs god, damned.

Animals, if on a mat, sit. Rain, a more vile drop, made us site it in a cottage. Breed deer â bottle fits a llama.

I lay, as I emanate, go to sleep, mad ones on docks â air is hot. Entrap, net, nine men in party raid - all if it is in a crab-pot room, an itemised, under-lit, nullified old log den â Iâm sure voles made it rot in knot.

Tubas we see far off lack limit. A cat on still or tall upward paws to no dog is an ample hot-dog, ergo nastier if tastier, eh? We, raw amid a conman, a mama in a mask, corpse et al., err.

Octuple tracks at a sonâs eyelash side distressed a tall eye doctor, a tall ace, rigger of a vote: got put in egress; odd, abased, is ebbed, as I am, Amy, asinine lot! Nine lots! Donât six rams live? Donât six exist?

Alfred, nuts or fool gigolo, trod never if gold locks all in a flap on a red rose; made nine or ten stops.

I heed never, Iâm Daisy, a prod never, I terrorise viler starfish. To me suitors, no lemons, came rowing. Is a sin a mania? Rot!

Sit! I fix a looted amp or delay more, hasten not. A baser if snug stool, wonkier, if not - Alf says - super, a ballet to no devil, is a stool too. Ban it, actor, race to no tune.

May names I wrote wrong (Is no man in it, a long old log?) sit in row, sign irate Goths; I dare drop it. At felonâs eye I peer, fast open â Iâm nosey, esteem eyes. All upset, ample hogs resume totting. Is sad nabob tired? Roots donât evade liver in Alfâs gob.

Deers I held right; oblong, apt enamel or tile rifle on gun spot to get a man â aim is all. I rogate, minister. Feeble gnats, alas late, prosaic, a canine pet is not to consume hot.

Loo, wet, issues old idiot; evading, I sneer, obey a deer, gall a deer, gain alpine dragnet for egg Iâd net to ram in a pan I made to help master. Rags I held, arcane poet, arcane poetic error, all odd; I bottle fine panacean lust. Iâd nag elks I ride if editor toted a minor. I fog a natural life.

Roses, or level dumb ones â rows in a mown, ample, hewn acre. Wolfsbane made it a garden in May, a garden indeed.

Nine mates, nine tons I must save now on time â editor raps a late man. G.I.s edit also, too. Do over if tests in a task radiate. Rob ran; I, too, fled.

âOmegaâ â list in alphabet.

A gander, a line of live ducks, irk cubs. A wart, set at a cast on knee, snug as spots.

A poor denim for a janitor, racer, armed aide, solid idler â rabid; Iâd elastic in a pot, tons to sew.

Tubes or axes went in a clam, in an oyster. Free booze â lap it all up. Pity, my apple hot, so Iâd a root stew. God, a stew! Tip it at feline! Posies, a catâs altar often, no baron packs. A monk caps dog â I meddle here â hot? Pull its leg! A bee was a hoot, eh?

No, it is opposite. Yaks I rode wore hats, albeit on deityâs orders. Rats age more held in a trap, nip and I know it â set no cage now.

Itâs eta; no, itâs a beta â Tsar of Tonga rates isles. Mad Ed is all upset at cider, is Ed? Is a madam too? Snip? Iâd snip, spot a fine position, snip nine more cinemas.

Do ogres sell in a mall? Yes, on a barge so rats row tubs.

Wall last canes up or Eros, an imp, lives to irk, rasp or dam all tides sent. I wonât â I was no Roman â even I saw tired row â a sore. He lives on. âNo!â we yell.

Up, now! Wards are in nursesâ sole care. I, peer, fed, am too fat? Oh, not I, test no dined ruby ale; dote not on salad itâs in â I am sad.

Locks I rifle so troops atone re war. Only rebel or a crofter animates so cottage beheld arcades, so trees are sold, abased. I redo, rehang, I err â a wasted act; nests Iâd â as an owl â laid. A bootâs raw foot, even if a foot to master, germs (ah!) can evil do.

Pan is tune-pipe â so hot notes, paths up to honeydew.

Odd locks, a maddened (I was aware) macaw on top, spot no seen knots, rifts or fan, I saw. Are maces a baton, madam? Oodles, madam? Rare laptops are too late â got too lit up.

Nits rub â snip now, Iâll abate, not snip, nits I held.

Nubile Danish tomboys I led to old loser as no melons I held; no fish to my name. Nod lower, do I dare? No, one nods a hairy snipe. (Edit: one hairy snipe, eh?) See silliness, else weâll ask cornish to obey deityâs or godâs item. I, God, damn it! I was in it! To Hades, acne trap, sad loser! As warts pop, a dosser I â we â vile rat, sack! Same row, oh woe! Macaroni, rats, as a hoot, tie. I vomit on rats.

Need to know what airline will transport my dog and me?

dog crates new york on Crate Escape - New York, NY
dog crates new york image

Kristy

Need to go from columbia SC to Hartford CT. I have a 6 month old pit bull, and its me and my fiance. Looking for something cheap I only have 500 to spend that includes the dogs travel crate and health certificate/shots (by the way what does he need?)

Answer
Unfortunately both airports do not have a lot of flights so ticket prices may be a bit pricy. You can start off with http://www.kayak.com. Once you have the airline picked out, you can call them and ask what is required to transport your pet.

If you are willing to drive to Atlanta, you may be able to get a cheaper ticket. Also instead of flying into Hartford, you can see how much ticket prices are if you fly into either New York LaGuardia or Boston.

Why does my dog pee in the house every night?

roarbear

A few months ago we got a new dog. She's new to me and my mom and new to the house but she is primarily my stepdad's dog who he brought her down from new york to live with us. She either sleeps in my parents bedroom or my bedroom at night, and if we keep the door open she'll go downstairs and pee every night. We make sure she pees right before we go to bed though. Can anybody explain why she does this?

Answer
Crate training could really help. Dogs do not tend to go to the bathroom in their sleeping area.
