EXTRA SMALL dog crates?

Emma L

I have a new 8 week old chihuahua and am looking for a crate that is about 12" long, 8" wide, and 10" tall. Does anyone know where I can find one for a somewhat affordable price??

Answer
Get a crate for your dog's adult size, not the puppy size. You'll save money that way. Many crates come with a divider so the puppy can be contained in a smaller area, then as the dog grows, the divider is removed.
Example: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753745

If you want a plastic crate and can't find them small enough in the dog section, look in the cat section. (My dogs have cat crates and cat beds. The size is right and for some reason cat stuff is often cheaper than dog stuff.)
.

can i use a big dog crate for a rat cage???

blair-witc

i might be getting a rat and i want to know if i could use a big dog cage or turtle tank for a cage. i would like glue little stairs and platforms on it if i could. im not being cheap. i just want to know :]
ohhhh. so if i get 2 rats how big do you think the cage should be?

love, kelly. i- uh - uh - i mean the blair witch!!!! muhahahahaha?
what if i get this for a 10 gallon tank (which i have) http://www.petco.com/product/10806/Small-Animal-High-Rise.aspx would that work?

Answer
Wire dog crates have too much spacing between the bars. Plastic dog crates? Well, they're plastic and rats LOVE to chew, so it would be a bad combination.

Turtle tanks are not recommended, due to the low air circulation.

Glue can be dangerous, if ingested.

It's best to get a large WIRE cage with spacing of 1/2 inch between the bars.

It's also best to get 2 or more rats. Never get a single rat! They're happier with a friend, and you should want optimal happiness for them.

EDIT: The cage I purchased for 2 adult male rats is the Super Pet My First Home for Exotics ($99)
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753352

Get anything similar in dimensions, and it should be just fine.

Help please!?

I've been looking online forever now and can not find a metal tray for my dog crate. I have a boxer so the crate is large (42x28x31) I have found some but not the right size. I've had 2 plastic ones and he has dug till he made these long holes in one and somehow got ahold of one of the corners and chewed and broke off piece's. He's in the crate cause he was doing stuff like this to my home while I'm gone. He does not like being alone, but have no tray is hard on him even with his bedding, plus he going to ruin my floor under his crate. My only hope is to find a metal tray, it's the best for the both us! Please if anybody knows of anywhere I can find one to fit his size crate let me know, also the cheaper the better. I have found so many of the wrong sizes that are from different places but be the same in everyway but have a huge differnce in price.

Try ebay. lots of dog stuff there.

potty training yorkies?

manda

we have had our yorkie for a couple years now and he is completly potty trained but recently we got another yorkie who isnt as potty trained. he goes a lot in the house and now our other yorkie is starting to do it. the new yorkie also goes sometimes when he gets excited. our old yorkie can go outside without a leash because he comes right back but the new yorkie has to be on a leash but he wants out every 10 minutes. how can we get them both completly potty trained so they will stop going in the house

Answer
Any dog can be house trained.

The answer is simple. Supervise!
The work involved is not so simple, but it works.

First Do not free feed your dog. Feed them on schedual. Water too can be done on a schedual. Give them a bowl of water, let them drink thier fill. Pick up the bowl and dump it placing the empty bowl on the ground. and take the dog out as noted below. If you see the dog nosing the water bowl give him another drink and go out agian.

Dogs will need to go to the bathroom 5-30 min after they eat/drink. Feed the dog, take him outside on a leash. Wait calmly while they go. If they do not go after 5 minutes go back into teh house and wait 5 min. Do not let the dog off the leash, Keep it with you or put it in a crate. Wait 5 min then take it back outside again. Repeat 5 min out 5 min in till they potty outside. If they potty calmly give them a treat and say good. Do not make a big deal just treat and then walk inside again.

Once they potty outside they have earned the right to wander the house with being on a leash.

Watch for signs:
Circling,
sniffing,
squatting (too late)

Other things to watch:
The type of food you are feeding. A higher quality food will produce less output.
Use a pet Enzyme such as Natures Miracle to clean up the mess to remove the smell of any 'accidents'

backyard dogs inhumane?

Kyo

I have two backyard only dogs. A golden retreiver(female) and a chocolate labrador(male). They are both neutered/spayed and have daily human contact. They are well fed and taken care of. So the other day I planned on adopting this cute little corgi mix dog and since he won't grow big I decided it would be best to have him sleep indoors with me. When I contacted about the dog, they replied that they didn't adopt to people with backyard only dogs even if I planned to keep this one indoors. I find this rather dumb as I take care of my dogs, feed them daily and they each have their own igloo homes. Is it really that bad to have them outside? They are never tied up and run around and have little toys to play with.

Answer
Um... where do they think wild dogs live? Dogs *WANT* to be outside. I have a 6lb Yorkie that would get eaten by hawks, but he still wants to be outside every waking moment.

Dogs are physically able to stay outside. They evolved to live outdoors!

My parents rescued a German Shepard that is an outside dog. He loves the rain. He loves the grass. And that dog is the most spoiled dog on this earth! Just because he lives in the back yard, doesn't mean he's being neglected. They love him as if he was their child.

I seriously dont understand the answers you are getting to this question. You want to RESCUE a neglected dog for pete's sake! Adopt him, make him part of your family, give him the attention he's not getting in the shelter. All of these people (including the ones that say they are trainers - although every trainer I have ever had tell me to treat my dog like a freaking dog) act like you are abusing the ones that you have. If that shelter wont let you have that dog, it's their loss. I'm sure you are a great pet owner and it shows by the fact that you already have two fairly huge dogs (which equates to more expensive) and you want open your home and heart to another. Bravo sir!!

Lay off people!! We talk about fixing the overpopulation animal problem in the shelters and then we find out that the animal shelters arent adopting the animals to loving homes. What gives??

For Shih Tzu lover: Yes, I assumed that the Corgi was neglected. Sure, maybe the shelter sits with her for hours on end petting her.. and only her. But I doubt it. Neglected doesnt mean it's being abused, it just means that it isnt getting the full attention it could be getting at home with a loving family.

Like I said, I dont keep my dog outside. Yorkies dont have undercoats and he would get cold. Labs and retrivers are a bit different.

So how does a wild dog differ physically to an outside "pet" - not a freaking yorkie, but a lab?

And how does being a pack leader have anything to do with where the dog sleeps? Is that any worse than the people that have indoor pets that are kept in crates for 8 hours a day? At least his dogs can run around and play with each other all day!

Why do show dogs have so many names?

aldera22

Answer
Every good breeder has a kennel name - it proudly identifies dogs as coming from their kennel, kind of like a brand name on a product. Sometimes, often when they co-own a litter with the owner of the opposite parent, they will include THAT kennels name in the registered name, also. In the case of a show dog, then all the titles the dog wins are added to the dogs name - Ch. for Champion (conformation title - means the dog has earned enough points being judged against the breeds standard to prove it is is a good representative of its breed), CD for Companion Dog (an obedience title from points earned for properly following commands), TT for Temperment Tested (means the dog has been tested for its reactions to different situations & acts properly according to its breed standard - i.e. protective if a gaurding breed, non-hostile if a companion breed), etc.

So, you may see a dog with a registered name like "Ch. Willow Glens Aphrodite of Bridgewater, CD, TT" - the kennel Willow Glen owned the mother, the kennel Bridgewater owned the father, and the dog has conformation, obedience, and temperment titles. But the owners probably call the dog in from the yard by yelling " Hey, Dottie, come on in!" LOL!

What supplies do I need before adopting a 1 year old dog?

Julia

I'm adopting a doggy named Elmo from the shelter. I've already got an idea of what I need for him but could someone give me a list of things?? Also what can I do to make him feel comferitable? Thank you!!
He's a 17 pound Poodle possibly shih tzu mix.

Answer
Awww, it's fantastic that your rehoming a dog from a shelter! My Jack Russell was from a shelter and she's only 12 weeks old now, so i'll tell you what i bought!

You haven't said much about Elmo's personality, whether he's a little nervous or anything? But most dogs are going into a new home.

Sorry if i state the obvious...:)

-Dog food, preferably the same brand they are feeding him at the shelter, that way if you want to change it you can do it gradually by mixing and phasing the old out and to avoid stomach upsets.
-Some healthy treats, like mini snack bones e.t.c, so you can reward good behaviour.
-Flea drops, the drontal or frontline one-drop stuff is good.
-Wormer drops, Tablets are best and easiest but the panacur paste is good too, whichever your dog will take easiest is best- if in doubt i'd get it presribed by your vet.
-Dog bed, a comfy, squishy one so that your dog is comforted and warm.
-Fleecy blanket, to put in his bed, give him cuddles, or put on the sofa for him to lie on.
-Toys, Lots! Like dog bones filled with tasty stuff and a ball or something to play fetch with him. Playing games will help you bond :)
-Pee Post, he's probably toilet trained at one, but whether he is or isn't a pee post is good cause you can show your dog it's allocated place in the garden as dogs go in the same place as a habit.
-OR puppy pads, if he's not toilet trained. The scent attracts dogs to go on them and helps with accidents.
-Adjustable puppy collar- will allow you to tag him and so you can take him for walks, and you can make it bigger as he grows.
-Lead...
-Puppy Shampoo, a mild one. Your dog will probably only need to be bathed a couple of times a year...unless he's long coated? Then he'll need it more often.
-Food and water bowl, Non slip stainless steel bowls are the best.
-Grooming brush, if he's short haired, once every couple of weeks, if he's long, will help you keep him free of tangles and prevent some of the shedding going in your home if used a few times a week.
-Kennel, crate, pen? If you want to use this as a bed rather than a squishy bed and somewhere to keep him when you do out.
-Dog repellent product, if he's a chewer?
-Dog carrier, if desired, to take him in car e.t.c

What i did on the first night with Ella was assign her a corner in my room (you might decide to use you living room e.t.c?). I put her bed there (some people prefer to use a crate) with some towels on the floor (incase of accidents) along with a puppy pad (in hope that she would pee on there) and some toys. I bought a pen enclosure to go around, because it didn't cage her in with a roof or anything and she had a large sleeping area, so she felt comforted and not alone because she was near me and not restricted.
When we first brought her home, we let her explore everywhere downstairs and we all sat in the living room on the floor quietly without looking at her so she could come and explore us and get used to us. When she whined being alone on her first night, I didn't talk to her, i just picked her up, let her outside to pee and put her straight back in her bed. If she continued to whine, that meant she just wanted atention so I didn't go to her as this teaches them that they can cry to get what they want. It's really important that you reward any good behaviour (like going to the toilet in the right place) because that's how he will learn. Getting into a routine of feeding and walks from the start will mean he'll learn quickly. If he does something wrong or nervously nips at someone, a stern clap disrupts the dog followed by 'No'. Don't shout at him or use his name to tell him off! The first few days you'll need to be patient, affectionate and give him time to get to know you and his new home. Give him plenty of 'good boys' and treats, and plenty of cuddles and reassurance. He needs to know that you are boss from the start :)

I hope everything goes brilliantly with Elmo and i hope i helped! I'm sure he'll be a great dog and that you're giving him a loving home!

Puppy pooped in open crate?

Sally

Our English Staffy is 8weeks (we got him yesterday). We are crate training him. Today I brought his crate in the lounge room and left it for him to go in and out as he pleased. I could see he needed to do a poo (started sniffing) so I took him to his puppy pad. He wouldn't go on the pad so he walked inside his crate (1metre away) and pooped in there! I think the crate might be too big (it's 90cm by 55cm). He pooped on his litter blanket (given by the breeder). Is this just puppy behavior or did I do something wrong?

Answer
It's just dog behaviour,do not worry! :) calm down you're doing fine.

what does your dog sleep on?

tublet cud

I'm looking for the ultimate dog bed for large dogs. If your dog is the size of a cat, please don't be a jerk and waste my time. thank you :)
ok sugar that's a little too ultimate. my dog only jumps on the bed when it thinks i'm not looking

Answer
I made Callie three bean bags. They are an oval shape, about 1 metre by 90cm. They have an inner which is completely sealed with around two bags of polystyrene beans inside. The outers are removable for washing. I put velcro on the first, but have used a zip on the other two.
Callie just loves them, I suppose it is because the beads generate more warmth when she is sleeping on them.

I took one to my Dad's house [where I stay quite a lot] so I didn't have to keep taking one back and forth. The bean bag lives in her dog crate, which is always left open.

Crate training a larger dog?

ht2mlly

I am all for crate-training, but my current dog is only 6lbs, so crate-training is easy...We plan on getting a lab in the next few weeks, and I still want to crate-train. But I can't help but think of it as being harder. Lugging a big huge crate from room to room and I don't know how a huge crate will fit in the car on road trips if we have a lot of luggage...How do most people do it? From room to room I meant that when sleeping, I move my dogs crate in to our room for the night, in the morning after he goes out I block off the kitchen and leave him in there with the crate door open. I just see this as being way too hard to do if we get a 50-80lb lab... but I love the benefits. Help - suggestions?? Thanks!
in regards to johnny B (i can't figure out how to actually respond) - anyways, i really do prefer crate training. i really don't know how i did it with my first dog, but now he absolutely loves his "house" (as we call it). if the door gets shut on accident, he sits right in front and paws at it for you to open it ... he loves it. I could never take it away from him. And, it really does come in handy - not as punishment, but as his safe place. he always feels comfortable no matter where we are if he has his house. And I'd want to pass that sense of security onto our new dog...
In regards to JenVT - like I said, I bring the crates from room to room for sleeping (cuz they will sleep in our room), and then to leave them in the kitchen where they hang out while I'm at work. - But I do like the idea of folding crates for travel. I can fold it up to save room for luggage, but still have their favorite spot to sleep in when we're away. Thanks!

Answer
How about you do not crate your dogs? That gets rid of all your problems there. Also everyone that i know that does travel with there dogs has a break down cage that folds when they travel, unless you keep him in the cage when you drive witch i would not do. Most people DO NOT crate there dogs, its useless and mean. Think about yourself laying in a hard cage all night or most of the day, that's horrible! Train your dogs to be good dogs outside of the crate when you are away. I have had dogs all my life and never had to crate one of them even as puppies. Takes a little bit more time but you have a better dog for it. Just my two cents, im not passing judgment or anything.

Looking for advice on dog crates for extra large dogs.?

stanleyand

I have 100 pound German Shepard. His current crate is heavy duty plastic with a wire front. He has bent the wire in the front enough where he can now push his way out and escape. I am looking for a heavy duty crate for a dog this size, one that is very strong and guaranteed not to let the dog escape! Thanks!

Answer
Try an all wire crate. The plastic crate is more in closed and its easier for him to get leverage to push on the door. I find the wire crates to be much better. I've always used them for my dogs, and I've had some pretty big dogs. Never any escapes. I find the doors on wire crates are more secure than the plasic ones. I don't think you can get a create that will guarantee your dog will not escape, give a wire one a try though. Make sure the wires/bars are thick enough.

what is the point of crate training? And how do you do it?

tru

I watched "It's me or the dog" last saturday and victoria said the longest you should ever leave a dog in a crate is 3 hours...SO Now I feel bad for leaving my 14 week old puppy in her crate all night.I mean It is not making a difference,I mean she still uses the bathroom in her crate.I just dont know what to do
she has the smallest crate that is available...She is a chihuhuha

Answer
I crate trained mine (Pom) starting him at 7 wks old and was very successful at it. Remember, puppies at that age are still developing and they have little bladders that do not hold much.

Nighttime is different than during the day hours. At night before bedtime, he was taken out to do his duty then placed in his crate that was located next to my bed where I was visible to him, his usual sleeping time was about 6hrs.

Usually by early morning when he was ready to go out which he indicated by stirring in his crate, I immediately took him out (same spot) every time, he almost also did his duty.

Now during the day time hours ~ his crate was brought down stairs and placed in the living room w/the door open ~ this was his safe haven that housed his blanket, toys etc ~ during the day, he I would find him periodically napping in his crate snuggled up next to one of his favorite toys.

At night, his crate was brought back upstairs and placed next to my bed. He was the easiest out of my three to train ~ I just wish I would have done it with the other 2 because he made potty training look nature...

My dog won't obey me now? What should I do?

M

I have a one-year-old male pomeranian dog. He is generally well-behaved, but unfortunately my parents keep spoiling him (i.e.: They are constantly giving him treats for no reason at all). When I first got him I took him to dog obedience lessons. For the first few weeks he obeyed all instructions and commands but after being exposed to my parents' treatment he soon began ignoring commands and instructions. Whilst staying with my parents over the holidays, he appears to have developed the habit of barking at anything (or anyone) who moves outside the house. Taking him for walks is a nightmare as he is constantly barking at other dogs who pass by him. I believe that my parents didnt take him for his obedience lessons during my absence. Is there anyway to regain control or will I just have to admit defeat and live with my beloved (although very spoilt) dog?

Answer
Dog obedience is more for the human than for the dog; the trainer is really teaching you how to work with your dog. That being said, you may need a short review course to get your dog back on track.

Did you learn to use a "hush" or "quiet" command? If not, that is where you should start for the indoor barking. My dog got it right away, but when we added a second dog to our home, she started to ignore the command. As soon as she would bark and then ignore the command, she got 5 minutes of time-out in her crate. Now she is back to obeying.

For outdoor on the leash, try what Victoria Stillwell of It's ME or the Dog (on Animal Planet) suggests. As soon as your dog starts barking, turn around and walk the other way. Another suggestion she gives is this: when you see another dog coming the other way, cross the street and have the dog focus on youâlook you in the eye. Use a treat to get his attention if you have to. She uses the look at me command while she holds the treat up next to her eyes. After the dog has passed by, give the treat. It will take lots of repetition and gradually getting closer the the other passers-by.

A good traveling dog crate?

A.Y.

I have a big german shepherd and I want to bring her on the car with me. She's four. make sure it's not that expensive.
oh yeah if you have a link please add it.

Answer
Go to a few pet stores and look around to see what they have. There are 2 different types of crates. Metal and heavy duty plastic. Ask a lot of questions too. The sales people will be very happy to assist you in any way they can. I would take your dog with you too. Let her get in some crates to see how she fits in them. You have to make sure it will be big enough for her to fully lay down in.

Taking your dog to the vet!?

Joli

So my family and I are going out of town tomorrow and we have to take our four dogs to the vet and boarding center. I hate taking my dogs in the car, because they get really excited and happy when we are there, so they jump and scratch me. My dad and I always take the dogs and my mom never wants anything to do with it...which kinda makes me mad. Anyways I have two pit bulls, a large terrier and a shepherd mix.
Anyways..I was wondering if you had any tips on how to make this car ride smoother! It is about 15 minutes away from my house. I was also wondering if you think how my dad gets the dogs all excited is the root of the problem: He will say lets go lets go.. and let them in the garage and hop in the car. He never has them sit or anything before hand.
PLEASE I need tips and HELP

Answer
My dogs almost always ride in crates whenever we go on a car trip, even though they are generally well behaved. Especially if I am hauling more than one dog. Safer for the dog & for anyone else in the car.

Unless you've got crates- and room to put 4 of them in your vehicle (or even 2, if the dogs get along well enough to crate together for 15 minutes), I doubt this advice will help much if you're leaving tomorrow. But for future reference, it might not be a bad idea. They also make removable wire barriers that wall off the rear half of the vehicle so the dogs stay in the back. Mostly made for SUV's, vans and wagons, I think there may be some that work in smaller cars. Again, probably not gonna help you tomorrow, but might be something to try later.

Lack of training overall is why your dogs behave badly on car rides & other places. They don't know how to behave in new/exciting/distracting situations because nobody has spent time teaching them what's expected. Your dad getting them excited probably doesn't help matters much....BUT I'd wager they'd get just as worked up on their own from the car ride & being in a new surrounding.

There is no solution that'll stop their behavior by tomorrow, short of giving them tranquilizers (kind of overkill for a 15 minute car ride, lol- besides you'd have to go to the vet for that anyway). Training and socialization is the only way to fix this kind of behavior, and it will require a good deal of time & effort. You or your dad or whoever is primarily responsible for the dogs- take them places more often and work on their obedience & manners. They need to get used to being in new, distracting situations AND they need consistent reinforcement that the "rules" apply no matter where you are, or what you're doing, or how many exciting things are distracting the dog. Only way the dog will figure it out is if you work with him.

Maybe stay at home with your mom this time- let Dad try and wrangle his 4 unruly dogs by himself? He's the adult, he could have taken the initiative to train his dogs from the beginning & ensure they had decent manners. But he didn't, and now the dogs are out of control, not fair for the dogs or any of the people who encounter them, nobody likes a hyperactive untrained dog. Maybe if Dad has to deal with the consequences by himself, he'll decide to do something about their behavior? Worth a shot, anyway.

Not much else is going to help the car ride, unfortunately.....if you're forced to go along, most likely you're just going to have to deal with whatever happens, there is not an easy overnight solution for this one, sorry :)

Where should I leave my dog while I'm on vacation?

Lady Perso

Basically I'm asking the question above and what should I do?
Also, the place has to be in Houston, Texas.
Taking my little dog with me is not a choice, my parents won't take her. Last time I left my dog without seeing her was only for 3 days, she had tons of food and water but ate or drank absolutely nothing. This time it'll be for a week and I'm afraid she might go into depression. Taking her to some pet hotel or vet clinic to be watched may not be an option unless you recommend a good but affordable(cheap) place to leave my precious little chihuahua.

Answer
Take her to a veterinary hospital and board your dog while on vacation.

How do I find boarding for my dogs?

Q. So here's the situation. I need to find boarding for the dogs listed. Normally my dad's training partner would've looked after them but he is out of town at the moment.

A Yorkshire Terrier
A Belgian Malinois
American pit bull x4
Wolf Dog
Fila Brasileiro

The Malinois and one of the pit bulls are trained in bite work so I know that makes it harder to find some place that accepts them. The Fila HATES all strangers with a passion so again that makes it tough. The other dogs are quite social. My aunt said she might look after my yorkie if it's okay with her husband but I'm not holding my breath. Does anyone knows of a place in California (or a place that's on the way to Houston, TX) that will accept ALL of my dogs? We need to leave Tuesday to go to a wedding.

Answer
I personally don't know of any but I recommend you look for training kennels that specifically train guard dogs and ask if they offer boarding services, that way you know the people are knowledgeable when it comes to your dog's training. I think you're gonna have a hard time finding someone that will accept the wolf hybrid though...

Pcsing with two dogs to Germany... Help!!!?

Amy

My husband has just re-enlisted for Germany, so i'm trying to figure out a couple of things. 1. When should he receive his orders. And how long after he gets them will we be leaving?( He is currently overseas, and will not return until July.) 2. we have two dogs. A 85 lb. German Shepard, and a 60 lb. boxer, how much would it cost us to have them fly on the same airline as us? Any and all information would be great. Only serious and knowledgeable answers please, Thank you!!

Answer
The cost for shipping a dog to Germany will depend on which airline you use, and their fees. Fees will vary based on the location shipping from and where you are arriving. That being said, when I shipped my dog to/from Germany it cost approximately $600 in 2001 (He weighed about 75 lbs). Check with the airlines for specific requirements on a shipping crate, but a general guideline is that the dog has to be able to stand in the crate.

Here is a link to Delta Airlines. It states that military members shipping a pet overseas get a 40% discount (that is new since I shipped). The link also has info on the shipping crate requirements. Be aware Delta states snub nosed breeds (Boxers) will be refused if the temperature is above 75F anywhere enroute (per the link).

Germany does restrict some breeds from import, however German Shepherds and Boxers are NOT on the list at present. Base restrictions may restrict your breed from on base. In that case you would have to live off-base. The second link is from the German Consulate listing the breeds restricted from shipment to Germany.

Good luck and enjoy your overseas assignment.

My dog is escaping from everything.?

Jason L

We have a crate inside the house that he can escape from and we have an outdoor dog area. I have had to reinforce all the fencing, dig cinder blocks into the perimeter to stop him from digging out. He has now broken the clasp off the door of the outside kennel and forced the gate open. He bends the metal gate of the indoor crate and forces the door open. He's an 11 month old, 75 lbs mix from the Humane Society (we've had him since he was 8 weeks) who has decided that he will not be held back. It is driving me crazy. If we can't contain this dog, I don't think we can keep him. Any ideas?

Answer
Does he have enough to do? He is a young active dog, he needs to be thoroughly exercised and tired out each day. A dog who has not been exercised shouldn't be confined. That is asking for trouble.

Have you tried a plastic Vari Kennel? They are a bit more sturdy than wire crates. The doors do not bend.

So last night, my dad said this summer we can get a do. I did some research and found that Norfolk Terriers are really good dogs. All I need now is to know what they need to be cared for. Does anyone have a Norfolk Terrier hat could answer this if not... please just answer my question with what you know ( : Do you know of any small or medium dogs good for smaller homes? thanks!!!!!!

Answer
â¢Physical Needs: Exercise. The Norfolk is a working dog. It was bred, years ago, to hunt small rodents and to chase animals of prey. Nowadays a Norfolk is less apt to dig you up a mole as he is to wake you up to play fetch with his favorite toy. Norfolks need space to sprint and places to dig (one of their favorite pastimes). A yard is not an absolute must for an owner of a Norfolk, but you should give your pooch at least two to three ample walks a day. Norfolks who do not get enough exercise often substitute barking spells for walks and can easily dig their way through Grandma's hand-me-down couch if given nothing better to do.

â¢Physical Needs: Space. Unlike larger breeds, the Norfolk is a good apartment dog, assuming you give him the exercise he needs. Terriers are known barkers, however, so if you live in close quarters with noise-sensitive neighbors, you may want to consider a pug or quieter dog.

â¢Physical Needs: Food. Consult your veterinarian for advice on the best food for your pooch. Dog foods can vary in quality so be sure to scrutinize the diet you will be feeding Fido. Take note of foods that cater to small dogs. Starting your puppy on a specially formulated puppy chow (instead of adult food) is recommended. Make sure you always have plenty of water for your dog as well. Norfolks can be creatures of habit, so having a daily food routine is a good idea. If you leave food out, your Norfolk may pig out until it is all gone-rationing is a good idea.

â¢Physical Needs: Grooming. It is a good idea to give your terrier a daily brushing. His waterproof coat can get mangy if not groomed properly. He is a light shedder, so the grooming remnants should not take over your whole house. Bi-monthly bathing and shampooing is a good idea, particularly in the summer months when your dog is getting down and dirty in your yard.

â¢Physical Needs: Sleeping Quarters. Norfolk terriers, even though they have thick waterproof coats, are inside dogs for the most part. If you have a heated dog house, that is one thing, but most Norfolks will do better sleeping indoors. Norfolks are also not the strongest jumpers, so your bed might be safe. Crates and/or dog sleeping pads are a good solution for sleeping quarters for your pooch.

â¢Health Considerations. Norfolk Terriers are very durable little dogs. The only common ailment, aside from some eye problems, is the life-threatening heart abnormality known as mitral valve disease. This disease attacks the heart in such a way that it creates a backflow of blood into one of the chambers of the heart. Take your dog to the vet for a regular check-up every year to see if there is a chance of this condition happening.

What are Norfolk Terriers like?

JonasBroth

I want to get a Norfolk terrier, but I only have a dog lead (outside), no fence. I was wondering what their "attitude" is like, and how many times they ned to be brushed. Please help!
I know they need a crate, but how big? Should I train him/her in obdience classes? How much excercise? I need info!

Answer
def. need obedience, and exercise..THEY ARE TERRIERS..lol.. and weekly brushing also. The Norfolk Terriers are active, courageous, affectionate, balanced, and without any nervousness or quarrelsomeness. They are easy to train but need consistent rules to follow. These little dogs love everyone and are good with children. He will dig and bark if left outside for long periods of time with nothing to occupy his quick mind. They love toys and balls and are generally good with other pets, but can be difficult to housebreak. Norfolk Terriers should not be let off of their lead unless secure.

Will this crate be big enough for my dog.?

Kellie M

I have an 80lb 8 month old Pyrenees/Bernese dog mix, with a 42 x 28 x 30 fit him comfortable, even if he gets bigger though I don't know how much bigger he will get.

Answer
i looked up the size and it says dogs from 71-90 lbs.
We had a moutian dog/lab and when he "matured" he was 95 so you puppy may be biiger than the crate.

P.S. My grandparents have a bishon frishee and they got him a crate, but when he got older he can only lay in his crate, not turn around like he use to so they have to get him a bigger crate to sleep in.

Does your large dog fit into 33" tall crates?

crzycoooki

And what breed is s/he? I have a labrador/german shepherd mix and he only fits in a 35" tall crate. 33" is too short. He weighs only 85-90 lbs, so it is not like he is that big, yet it is sooo hard to find a 35" tall crate.
Another thing that gets me is 35" tall crates are "good for German Shepherds".. Most german shepherds are TALLER than my dog, so..

Answer
Weight doesn't have much to do with crate height.

My dog weighs 80 lbs and can fit into a 28" tall crate...

But then again, she's only about 21" tall.

She's an American Pit Bull Terrier

I have a male, that is a few inches taller that fits into a crate that's just a few inches taller. He's 85 lbs. Also an American Pit Bull Terrer

EDIT: That seems like a HUGE crate to me!! LOL

if my dog is crated a lot, would that stunt his growth?

cabsmommy

His mother and father were really big and I expected him to be much larger by now. He has to be crated a lot because...well, he's kind of slow and hasn't mastered simple techniques just yet. He's getting there...but slowly. We love him and I just want to make sure I'm not taking anything away from him.
No, he's only in there for training. He's still a pup but he's 9 months and not as big as we were told he would be. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't causing that. He is a large breed (rott/black and tan coonhound mix). He probably weighs about 50 lbs or so. Most of his weight is in the front of his body (he's kind of shaped like a bull lol). His crate is HUGE. I bought one that would house a 110 lb dog. He still has accidents in the house so we can't let him roam free just yet. He doesn't give me signs that he has to go...no sniffing around or barking or anything. I take him out every few hrs but I just sometimes miss the mark. It's kind of frustrating because I'm trying my hardest to pay attention and watch him but I'm just not seeing his signs.
I've had him since he was 7 weeks old. We started out really well. He seemed to be picking up everything on point and it was great. Then our other pup, was hit by a car and everything went downhill from there. His behavior is still good but the pottying in the house is bad. When I say that he is crated a lot, only 50% of the time is by me. The other half is on his own. He goes in there and stays in there. He will only come out for treats when he is in that mood but then goes back inside. He only gets crated when he goes in the house and for twenty to thirty minutes at a time. After that, he is allowed to run in the house or in the backyard.

Feel free to judge, I don't care. If I didn't love him, I wouldn't be on here trying to get help. Say what you want, but I think my dog is depressed because of the loss of his friend and I'm trying to figure out what to while keeping my home clean enough so my child can play on the floors.

Answer
A pup/dog is only as well trained as the owner has been taught to teach

Doesn't sound like you are to interested to invest the time into training him.

To simply shove him in a crate is not helping in training him , its hindering his emotional, psychological and physical well being.

How old is the pup?

How long have you had him?

How long are you crating him?

You have a strange way of showing love .........................

Edit : : :

If you have had him since he was 7 weeks old then you have had ample time to house-train him.

Obviously you were and are not diligent in having him on a schedule and possibly he could have a UTI.

Having a UTI would case him to urinate more often as well as drink quite a bit, something that he would have no control over and which he would need to be seen by a vet and possibly be put on antibiotics.

You have contradicted yourself in your question as well as with the additional information.

How can he be crated for long periods of time, but also only be in there 30 minutes at a time... how can he not be allowed free roam of the house,, but say he is in his crate 20-30 minutes at a time and then can run in the house or yard.

What sense does it make if you put him in his crate when he comes inside for 20-30 minutes and then can run in the house or yard. The time that he would not have an accident is after he had been outside to eliminate, so why crate him? Surely makes sence to crate him after he had eliminated outside and allow him out of his crate so then he can have an accident. Good Job! How about not crating him and getting on a schedule and only using the crate at night... Novel idea huh?

You're not looking for help your looking for someone to correct everything that you have been unable to do yourself from lack of information, patience and understanding. I think you are just overwhelmed with having a puppy due to also having children and it is just to much for you to do.

A pup will use their crate as a safe haven to get away from what may be going on in the house for some quiet time, but a pup would not want to always be in their crate if it was in a happy, loving home. He would want to be with and spend time with his human family. Something is wrong within the household if the pup would rather be in his crate than socialize with the other members of the family.

A pup or dog to be house-trained needs an owner who will continuously be diligent in taking them outside, have it on a regular schedule and not punish for incidents of accidents because the owner didn't know enough to take him outside.

Proper House training .......

Take the pup outside first thing in the morning at 7:00

10-15 minutes after every meal

After every nap

After play time

And every hour until he understands where to eliminate whereas you can then extend the time a bit longer.

You should have never gotten a puppy if having accidents was going to be such a big problem. Puppies are babies and with everything it takes time.

Just like children it takes some a bit longer to be potty trained . No pup comes with a guarantee that house training will be instantaneous but crating the pup continuously is cruel and you are wrong in your methods.

The best thing you could do for the pup is to either return it to the breeder, find it a loving patient home or surrender the pup.

And again yes you can actually stunt his growth, cause emotional and psychological harm. Probably already have!

Take the pup to the vet and have him checked for a UTI, either learn how to house-train him or surrender him.

Again ... You're not looking for help your looking for someone to correct everything that you have been unable to do yourself from lack of information, patience and understanding. I think you are just overwhelmed with having a puppy due to also having children and it is just to much for you to do.

If you do not care for the answers you received then do not post your question on the internet. No one here is going to sugar coat their knowledge and expertise just to make you feel good. The answers are given in direct response to the wording of the question and in the best interest of the pet.

In my contract any and all forms of neglect and abuse is subject to repossession at any time, which means in your case for the neglectful amount of time you are crating the dog, the pup would be repossessed immediately.

If you do not want help then don't post questions and waste our time.

Dog Crates???

My very active/hyper 5 month old Beagle border collie puppy has out grown her wire crate. She is crate trained and doesn't go to the bathroom in the house/crate anymore. We are going to get her a bigger crate but would a carrier crate calm her down alittle? Her crate would be under a window so she would get light in to it. If we put a blanket over her wire crate, she just pulls it through the bars and chews on it. She gets pleanty of exercise and is only in the crate when we cannot watch her and when we are out.
Which type is better?

And yes i have asked this question before becasue different people are on at different times and i would like to hear their imput too.

Answer
The plastic ones are good because they provide a cavelike feeling for the dogs. However the wire ones are easier to clean. The final decision lies with you. Whatever works best for you. If you decide on the wire crate, they do sell covers to fit snuggly on your crate so that your dog will not chew and pull on it. If you are looking for a reasonable price on crates, try ebay. I bought a brand new 42" wire crate for less than $50 including shipping. It would have costed me $130 at Petco.

How to build/buy this dog crate door?

Jennifer

http://design-milk.com/images/2011/03/z-box-6.jpg

Trying to build my own dog crates.... looking at options for doors and I saw these. Not sure if they would've been purchased or built, but I'mnot sure where to start.... this seems like a good option that locks and provides plenty of ventilation.

I'm thinking it might be built with a screen door grate but I'm not sure how to make the hinge..? Or does anyone have any other ideas on a door? I'm probably going to buy some base cabinet frames from IKEA but I'm trying to think of options to make locking doors with plenty of ventilatio

Answer
It'd be a good option to go to homedepot first.

They sell hinges there and you know EVERYTHING. It should be cheaper than ikea too. I would use something like google sketch up to get all the specs, and make it exactly what I want then bring it to homedepot. get all the hard stuff pre-cut and labeled. Then talk to their crew about the best equipment to join the stuff if you're dealing with metal or plastic.

Hopefully, it'll be a one stop. If its not a hardware store is a really good place to save and get all your foundation material and advice from people who build.

I don't know how big your dog is or if it could jump but you might just save alot of time and money if you get it a playpen http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Pet-Supplies-Dog-Playpens/zgbs/pet-supplies/3024198011

Can i use a dog crate for an amazon parrot?

Leslie

I need a temporary cage for a new amazon im getting and im just wondering if i can use a dog crate for a bit of time till i get her a cage

Answer
As long as the spaces between bars are small enough for her not to squeeze through, it should be fine temporarily. It would be smarter to just wait until you can buy a cage to get the actual animal.

I am interested in getting my MN Real Estate license, but then what?

C D

I have always had my eye on Real Estate, and now I have the opportunity to take classes and get my license. The problem is that I cannot find any information on the steps to take afterwards. Do I have to join a Brokerage place like Edina Realty or can I just start selling my friends and family's property? Are there public housing listings, or is everyone a client, etc.... I would like to know where to find this info, or get a general layout of what the steps are after the classes.

Answer
When you are just starting out, you are going to want to work for a brokerage rather than trying to be a sole proprietor. RE is one of those rare occupations where you have to pay to do it, especially at first. So, everyone you talk to is probably going to try to get you on board, it is a very low risk for the brokerage because they only have to pay you if you produce.

What you are going to be offered will vary greatly, there may even be different compensation packages within the office. There may be monthly fees (aka desk fee). There may be all sorts of other things you have to pay too, advertising, website fees, transaction fees, franchise fees, E&O, postage, letterhead, signs, copy fees, etc, it can add up quickly.

Also, you are going to want to inquire about mentoring/training. Some offices will give you a desk and a phone and expect you to figure it out. Others will have nice classes and/or mentoring to get you started. And everything in between.

Another thing you are going to want to check out is the climate of the office. In some offices, the top producers are high maintenance and they basically run the office rather than the owner/broker. Some offices are very laid back, you'll see a dog trotting through, agents toting their kids, people wear jeans. Then the other end of the spectrum would be the power office, everyone is in suits, they would trip their grandmother to get to a sale before you, highly charged, very competitive. And it doesn't matter whose name is on the door, if it isn't a right fit for you, you will be miserable.

People will tell you that it really doesn't matter where you start because you can change offices at any time, and this is true. But it costs money and clients every time you change.

So, there is a lot to consider. Good luck.

Where can I find an affordable small dog crate or kennel?

Tessa4

Next week I am getting a small yorkie. She is gonna live in my room, so I have to have a crate or kennel. I have looked online at the stores like petco, petsmart, etc. They are all like $60.00 to $150.00. I can't find an affordable one HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
Walmart has small plastic crates. They cost about $20. The wire ones are more.
Garage sales and thrift stores might have a crate for $5-10.

As your dog is going to stay small, get a crate that will be suitable for her when she is full grown. One for a 10lb dog will work. If you go too big, she will use part of it to potty and it will make house breaking harder.

Would 2 male ferrets be able to get out of a large dog crate?

Q. Just curious, since I have 2 free roam ferrets but they refuse to sleep when I go to bed. They share my bedroom with me and are constantly nibbling my feet during the night! :-) They have a cage in which they sleep sometimes but it's not a very big cage and they get out of it frequently. I'm considering purchasing a large dog crate since they're cheaper than a ferret cage and I still want my boys to be free roam, I just want them to have somewhere nice, quite roomy, and secure for them to be in whilst I'm asleep.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance.

P.S the crate I'm looking at is the second one, the one underneath the wooden one on here

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8706313/Trail/searchtext%3EDOG+CRATE.htm
They throw themselves at the door whilst one and it swings open quite regularly. I'm generally not happy with that cage lol hence looking for a dog crate.
i don't know where the 'whilst one' came from :S

you think a dog crate would be safe then? I was just worried about the bar spacing to be honest, looks as if they might get through at the bottom.

Answer
I do not think a dog crate is an efficient ferret cage even if they are only in it when you sleeping. I have never seen a dog crate with 1 inch bar spacing and that is what you need. I have one right behind me that I keep open and mine go and sleep in there sometimes when they are out of their ferret nation 142 cage (which is whenever I am awake) and they can slip through the bars if I were to shut them in. I have two girls and two 3-4 lb boys.

Here is very nice and escape proof cage made just for ferrets. It seems to be around the same price you were wanting to spend AND it has levels which means extra space which a dog crate does not have.

http://www.companionschoice.co.uk/product_details_708.htm

I'm almost positive you will like it :]

Edit: It is IMPOSSIBLE for a ferret even at 8 weeks old and if a female to fit through 1 inch bar spacing so don't worry. 1 1/2 inch's in another story, it is a big difference.

I have had ferrets for 2 years and have 4 of them. I got 3 as 8 week olds and none were even close to being able to fit through the bars.

Can a 6 year old dog be crate trained?

Karlie

I have a 6 year old Giant Schnauzer who I have a crate for but we never use it. He didn't used to do this, but now anytime we leave him home alone even if it's for 10 minutes, he gets into trouble. I'm so tired of coming home and cleaning up after him. Some days he goes to daycare and I walk him 3-5 miles a day and some days he goes to the dog park so he's not neglected and he does get a ton of exercise. Is it possible at his age to crate train him? I'm not talking about leaving him in the crate for hours and hours-- maybe just 3-4 hours a few times a week mainly because I'm worried for his safety. One time I came home and a stove eye was on from where he jumped up on the counter looking for food. He's just too curious and nosy for his own good and I'm worried one day he'll manage to hurt himself.

Any other advice would be welcome as well!

Answer
Sure you can! Make sure you get a crate big enough for him to be comfortable in. That means big enough to stand fully up in and that he can turn around easily in. He shouldn't be jammed in there. Next only use the crate as a "Safe place." Never for punishment. If you want to start leaving him in there when you leave, make sure you always put him in there if he is left alone. When you go to the store, when you go to work, anytime you are going to be gone from the house, he needs to go in there so he is used to the routine.
Now the first couple of times you put him in there, you may need to physically help him. But don't force him too roughly. Speak sweetly to him and try to always use the same phrase when you put him in there. (For example, we always say "Okay Frank, let's go to bed!") Reward him when we goes there, give him a cookie or treat every time. He will begin to like going in his kennel. Never punish him in there to give him the idea that being in his kennel is bad. Eventually you will not even have to touch him to get him to go in there. With our dogs and our roommate's dog, all you have to do is say go to bed and hold the door open and all three of them just hop right in their kennels. Haha, they even know who's is who's. It's too cute. Kennel training is a good thing and it does keep them safe. They can't get into anything unsupervised and swallow something they shouldn't. Also I find it to be safer in case of an emergency. In case of a fire or a break in the dog is always in the same spot and you can grab him in a hurry or if you need to let authorities know where they are so that they can be saved, it can happen. (They even have little signs now to alert firemen of whereabouts of pets, like three dogs in kitchen in kennels in case of fire!) I'm glad you are willing to take the steps to keep your pet safe! Good luck!

Male Westy will not house train?

Mary S

I have a little Westy who will turn 2 years old in December. To this day he is not fully house trained. He does not poop in the house - he will only urinate. He does it constantly. Does anyone know if I get him fixed if it will solve this problem??? I have tried crate training, consistency with letting him out every hour, walking, rewarding with treats, firmly telling him he has done wrong when he is actually doing it...........etc. He is always lifting his leg on the corner of things - I find dried pee all the time - especially because I cannot always catch him in the act.

I have two rooms that are carpeted and it is tough to get the smell out if I don't clean it up right away and since I don't always see him doing it, it's hard to know that he has done it until I smell it..................

P.S. For anyone looking for a good product out there for pet odor and stain - Pureayre is great!!! It's totally chemical free and does work! You can spray it directly on your dog and it will not harm him. Also, for hints of getting smells out of carpets - go to a Bed, Bath & Beyond and buy a metal liquid meat injector. It's like a giant syringe. The end is pointy enough that you can stick it into your carpet and dispurse the liquid underneath the carpet. This helps in removing the odor underneath the carpet when you cannot literally lift it to clean underneath!

Thanks!!

Answer
If you find puddles on the floor it is more likely to be pee - with marking the dog deposits a smaller amount of urine usually done to upright surfaces such as a doorway, table leg or piece of furniture. D
Neutering male dogs helps in 50% of marking behavior cases, so yes definitely have it done and hope he is in that half that it works for.
To cure it - Confine your dog to one area of the house where you can watch him. Shut doors to other areas of the house or barricade them off with baby gates or improvise with whatever is at hand. Make yourself a Shaker Bottle, simply an empty cola can with a several coins inside it Watch your dog for any signs (such as sniffing and circling) that he is even thinking about marking. The moment he begins to lift his leg shake the can once only to get his attention. The loud noise should startle him and interrupt what he is doing. As he looks towards where the noise has come from. Give him the command in a stern voice 'NO PEE'. Sometimes throwing the can in his general direction works well too but be careful not to hit him with it as you only want to startle him not harm him. If he then turns around and resumes what he was doing, repeat the process. Try to divert his attention with something fun like a game or throw him a ball. You can deter your dog peeing on the furniture by attaching strips of aluminum foil to his favorite spots. The urine will make a noise when hitting the foil and may splash back on him.

Do i have the right or do you think I am over reacting???

EVANS HERE

I have a shiba Inu puppy who is about 8 months old. We have a big crate 4 him which we lock him in when we go out or at nite cause he chews everything he can get & will climb my dress & stuff 2 get things. My inlaws say this is wrong & mean 2 the dog. (he has gotten electrical wires while we were showing once so its more 4 his safety) If we have 2 go somewhere 4 a long time we take him 2 the inlaws to be watched. Well needless 2 say the other day he "bite" them 4 no reason. When we got there my hubby was told by his bro that his step father took the dog in the bedroom SLAPPED him & then chased him out of the room. The dog shit and pissed himself. His mom told me that she went to pick him up 2 go 2 bed (which they never did before) & he got aggressive (if he dose not want 2 be picked up he will fight 2 get away) She then went 2 punish him 4 it & got bite. To me it sounds like they abused my dog cause a friends daughter who is like 8 picks my dog up & forces him in a stroller (playful) he has never bite her once & he fights to get away. when we went 2 get the dog she argued that it was all because we crate him. Now our pets are spoiled we walk our dog they just let the dogs out on a lead unwatched. Plus their dog had poop matted in her fur for over 3 days (they fed it table scraps, got the runs down her legs bad and did not bath her) I also found out that they have done lines of coke. His mom is also very dependent on beer. NOW i wont for sure let her babysit my son when he is born (he is due this december and is the first grandson in the family) she has stated that her drinking is not a problem & her kids turned out ok when a comment was made about drinking around our son. We dont want anyone drinking when watching our son, and she will drink. (she drives drunk to go get more beer and will drive people around when totally smashed and sees nothing wrong with it) Also after the abuse on the dog cause he never bites unless you attack him I am afraid they might harm my child whats to stop them from hitting my son when they hit my dog & MY SON WILL NEVER BE HIT. we dont believe in it and they tell us we are worng for that as well. (we believe in punishment but if you hit you teach your child hitting is ok) So after all that do you agree or disagree that they should not be alone with my child.....
we also wont let her drive with our child at anytime....
I also dont want her to hold my child unless she is sitting only cause I am afraid she will be to drunk and may drop my son or trip with him...
My dog is spoiled and has a bucket full of toys and bones and many other things (including the cat toys he steals from the cat) to play and chew. We can buy him every bone in the store and spray bitter bite (i think he loves the taste of the stuff cause he will go right to chewing after we spray) He is out with us all day but if we have to run somewhere or when we go to bed because we can not supervise him thats when he will get things he is not suppose to. He gets mad when we go to bed he is an attention hog. we can run him at the park for two hrs straight come home and he still wants to play. The dog is the energizer bunny!!
I am only asking cause I am one of those people who wear my heart on my shirt. I feel bad being mean to anyone. I know what to do I just want to see if others think the same so I dont feel as bad about it.

Answer
Let me get one thing straight..I don't believe in crate training.I believe it to be selfish and mean (you try being locked up in the bathroom for hours!)

But...

you are doing it for the safety of your dog.One thing I would like to suggest is getting chew toys and bones so your dog has something to chew on instead of cables and such.

It was WRONG of them to abuse your dog and your dog bit them because they abused him! why they cannot put two and two together is beyond me.

I would allow the grandparents to see their grandchild but I wouldn't exactly let them babysit your kid knowing that she is a alcoholic.

Good luck.

Bringing you dog from Ireland to the US?

Kinga

I am moving this year from Ireland to the US and I'd like to take my cavalier with me.What do I need and How do I get a passport for her?

Answer
Here are a couple of links to US Govt websites that should have the official information you need.

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/animal_import/animal_imports_pets.shtml

http://www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/

Then you will need to contact the airline and find out what theif requirements are for international travel. They usually require an approved carrier/kennel with food and water bowls that screw onto the door, and you may have to ziploc a small bag of kibble to the top of the crate as a requirement on a long flight since laws often require them to offer food and water to a dog during flight.

-A Cavalier is small enough that you can probably use a small carrier that you can put under your seat on the plane and that way she can be with you through the trip. Depends on the length of the flight how comfortable that is. http://www.1800petmeds.com/Under+Seat+Pet+Carrier-prod60184.html

-If you end up having to fly interstate and she cannot accompany you under the seat for some reason than I strongly recommend Continental/United Airlines PetSafe flights. My experience with this is limited, but very positive. The PetSafe flights mean that the dogs do not fly as 'luggage' in an unpressurized, uncontrolled compartment, they are sent as live cargo in a pressurised, temperature controlled hold. USA is a big country and flights can be long. If the dog cannot be in the cab with you than I would only fly Petsafe with the pressurized cabin. http://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/animals/petsafe.aspx and also see http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/United_Airlines/pets.php

It looks to me like not much is required by fed govt here, but what they don't tell you is that airlines and local governments have their own rules and can still cause delays and stress for you if you are not careful. There are some common sense things I strongly suggest:

-I can't imagine traveling with a dog unless it had a health certificate. We do that here any time we take a dog on an airplane, regardless of what the 'regulation' says, a health certificate is a must and it should accompany the dog at all times. That way you are prepared for any local laws and airline requirements.

Also, even though Ireland is a Rabies-free area, and so the vaccine technically is not required, the USA is a rabies zone and vaccination is required by law throughout the nation. If an unvaccinated dog so much as nips or puts a scratch on somebody, it opens a whole legal pandoras box, so I also suggest having proof of all vaccinations and if it were me I would have the dog vaccinated for Rabies too, at least 30 days before you fly just to make everbody happy. Also just be sure the other boosters are current and document that as well.

You should put all documentation in a ziploc bag and tape it securely to the top of the airline kennel for all to see, and also have photocopies of those documents that you carry with you at all times. That way you are covered in case of any misunderstanding or screw-up. Its just common sense and peace of mind.

-Double check with your veterinarian and with the airlines but I think if you do these things you will have no trouble.

I am happy that you are bringing your dog with you and wish you both a happy welcome to America.

can we emigrate to ireland from the usa with a dog?

Answer
In short...yes you can, but there are procedures that have to be strictly followed if you do not want your dog going into quarantine for 6 months upon arrival in Ireland.

The rules for bringing pets into Ireland seem to be the same as they are for bringing pets to the UK, which i know all about since my partner will be bringing her cats with her when she moves from the USA to England this summer, and we have had to figure all of this out!

You could use a pet moving service, which will probably cost you somewhere between $2000 and $3000 to move your dog.
Or you could save some money and do it yourself, which means having to deal with the travel arrangements and paperwork yourself.

Basically though, you will need to first get your dog microchipped, then rabies vaccinated, then blood tested (to check for rabies anti-bodies in the blood).
The steps MUST be done in this order.
The microchip must be one that can be read by the machines used in Europe, or if not you must bring your own microchip reader.
The rabies shot must be carried out by a government certified vet.
And the blood test must be done by a government authorised lab, as far as i know the only lab that does this blood testing for domestic pets is the FAVN Rabies Laboratory in Kansas ( www.vet.ksu.edu/rabies ) so your vet will have to send the sample there.
After the blood has been tested and passed you then have to wait 6 months from the date the blood was drawn before your pet can travel.
Your dog will also need to be treated for ticks and tapeworms 24 to 48 hours before it is checked in to travel to Ireland.
You must use an approved transport service to ship your dog over, and your dog must be in an approved travel crate which has enough room for your dog to stand, turn around and lay down. There must be ventilation holes in the sides and back of the crate, and there should be a securely locking grate-style door and a water bowl that attaches to the door.
Your dog will most likely have to be checked in as live air cargo, were it will travel in a pressure and temperature controlled room in the luggage/cargo hold of a passenger jet. This room is kept darkened for the duration of the flight, as animals have been shown to relax faster and remain calmer in these conditions. Throughout the trip your dog will be handled by trained animal handlers only.

Ofcourse if you do not have the 7 months it will take to get your animal ready to travel, you can always take the quarantine option. If you do get your pet micro-chipped and vaccinated and blood-tested but can't wait the full six months to travel, say you can only wait 3 months, then your dog should be able to complete the required six month period in quarantine (3 months there in the US and a further 3 months in quarantine in Ireland).
Hope this helps :-)
