Answer
Yes, it's a GREAT deal if you can get it for that. However, you have to bid on the item and it depends on how much the other people and yourself are willing to pay. You will not find a new crate for $20 though. Crates are expensive unless you can find a good one used on craigslist or at a yard sale.

Where can I buy a cheap dog crate in Aus?

Joni

I am hoping to get a yorkie poo pup soon and I was wondering where I could buy a cheap dog crate in Australia? Also, does the dog need the crate when it gets older? If it doesn't, what would be the best age to get rid of the cage? Thanks :)

Answer
Your little mutt (which I hope you are adopting from a shelter!) would do best in a small crate.

Here are a couple to get you started on your research:
http://shop.vebopet.com.au/store/small-24-collapsible-metal-pet-crate.html
http://www.mypetwarehouse.com.au/ALL-FOR-PAWS-WIRE-CRATE-SMALL-61CMX46CMX53CM-p-18188
http://www.petsunleashed.com.au/wire-crate-small

Yes, you can continue to use the crate as the dog gets older. He/she will most likely seek it out to sleep and lie in.

is there anywhere that you can buy CHEAP dog crates?

carststr

We are going to be getting an Australian Shepherd Puppy in the next couple of months and are looking to find a dog crate- pref. used- that is on the cheaper side. Does anyone have any or anything that they are selling, reduced price?

Answer
Try http://www.craigslist.com - usually there are people on there selling unneeded and even new crates for reasonable prices.

You can also try browsing your local newspaper in the classifieds, surely one day you'll come across someone selling an inexpensive crate.

What size Dog crate should i get?

Lilly Hami

i have a husky mix (we think its a husky shepherd) hes only about a year old so he might grow a little more. But anyway he goes crazy everytime i leave the house, if i put him inside he scratches every door in the house, if hes in the garage he actually chewed half way threw the garage door, and in the back yard he digs holes every where. i dont really like crating dogs but im gonna have to untill he calms down a bit. im not sure where i could find one for cheap and what size i should get. please help! thanks!!!!!

i take him on three walks a day and only leave him 2 hours every day, he has tons on exercise. so that is not the problem

Answer
I am a big believer in crates, but hate to see any dog left over 4-5 hours. If you can't make it back to give it a mid day break, see if a neighbor or professional dog walker can. Doggy day care is a great idea too.

A crate only needs to be big enough for the dog to stretch out in. Note, if you will ever fly with it, it must be able to stand with its head erect. A 24'' plastic crate might or might not be big enough. Y9u may need to go up to the 36'' ones.

EXTRA SMALL dog crates?

Emma L

I have a new 8 week old chihuahua and am looking for a crate that is about 12" long, 8" wide, and 10" tall. Does anyone know where I can find one for a somewhat affordable price??

Answer
Get a crate for your dog's adult size, not the puppy size. You'll save money that way. Many crates come with a divider so the puppy can be contained in a smaller area, then as the dog grows, the divider is removed.
Example: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753745

If you want a plastic crate and can't find them small enough in the dog section, look in the cat section. (My dogs have cat crates and cat beds. The size is right and for some reason cat stuff is often cheaper than dog stuff.)
.

can i use a big dog crate for a rat cage???

blair-witc

i might be getting a rat and i want to know if i could use a big dog cage or turtle tank for a cage. i would like glue little stairs and platforms on it if i could. im not being cheap. i just want to know :]
ohhhh. so if i get 2 rats how big do you think the cage should be?

love, kelly. i- uh - uh - i mean the blair witch!!!! muhahahahaha?
what if i get this for a 10 gallon tank (which i have) http://www.petco.com/product/10806/Small-Animal-High-Rise.aspx would that work?

Answer
Wire dog crates have too much spacing between the bars. Plastic dog crates? Well, they're plastic and rats LOVE to chew, so it would be a bad combination.

Turtle tanks are not recommended, due to the low air circulation.

Glue can be dangerous, if ingested.

It's best to get a large WIRE cage with spacing of 1/2 inch between the bars.

It's also best to get 2 or more rats. Never get a single rat! They're happier with a friend, and you should want optimal happiness for them.

EDIT: The cage I purchased for 2 adult male rats is the Super Pet My First Home for Exotics ($99)
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753352

Get anything similar in dimensions, and it should be just fine.
30"L x 18" W x 30"H

Would it be possible to convert a dog kennel into an outdoor rabbit/guinea pig hutch?

Darkhallow

I've been looking around for a cheap out door hutch for my guinea pigs during spring/summer, and found a rather large dog crate for sale... with some adjustments, could I turn it into a guinea pig hutch?

Answer
It depends what type of dog crate. I would most definitely not try it is the dog crate was previously used by a dog, as the scent (even if it was washed) will scare the animals.

This type will not work ---> http://blog.timesunion.com/bark/files/2009/06/dog-crate.jpg

But this type should. ---> http://www.extralargedogcrateshop.com/images/DogCrate.jpg

Just make sure there are no big openings or loose wires/cables that a dog wouldn't be affected by but a Guinea Pig would. Good Luck!

How much yardage of fabric do I need to cover a dog crate ?

Erika

I have been trying to figure out how much yardage I will need to make fabric covers for my dogs crates. One crate is 30" L x 21" W x 24"H and the other crate is 42" L x 28"W x 31"H

The fabric is 58" wide.

PLEASE HELP ME !!!

THANK YOU :)

Answer
Why not use a sheet!! I've done this with my crates - cheap, less fuss and very effective.

ps To the person who suggests otherwise, actually covering the top and 3 sides of a crate is by far the best way to use a crate - it makes them into a little den, a safe and quite spot for a dog to take a nap in peace. And it shuts out any drafts that may be around where the crate is situated. If the dog is crated, and in a draft, he stands no chance of getting out of it.
