Pet Transportation from Dallas TX, to Savannah GA?

inlovewith

My father who lives in Dallas TX needs to ship two small dogs (pomeranian and papillion) to me in Savannah GA (or Jacksonville FL, which ever would provide a better flight). Ive never had to deal with pet transportation and want to make sure my puppies are well taken care of and arrive to me safely. Together they weigh no more than 12-15 pounds and I want them to be crated together as they get very bad seperation anxiety. Does anyone have any information or advise for my situation?

Answer
Jacksonville is a much better choice since there are direct flights from Dallas (pretty sure for American at least, possibly others..if there happen to be direct flights into Savannah, so much the better.) Layovers can be VERY bad for pets since you never know how long they'll be sitting on the tarmac during transfer between flights. Be aware that most carriers will not accept animals at all if the temperatures are expected to be above a certain level. You may want to consider sedating them beforehand, but be sure to consult with a vet and get ones designed for dogs - human medications can have unexpected results when given to animals. (I recall a case when a woman gave some to her cat...that particular human medication had the exact opposite effect on felines and the cat created havoc on the flight.)

Q. I'm (hopefully) getting a rabbit, and I want to know if a dog crate is a big enough cage for it. I know that generally store bought cages for rabbits aren't big enough, and I can't build it, and it needs to be a bit smaller, because my room is quite tiny. Do you think a dog crate would be big enough?

Answer
wellll it is big enough (depending on the breed of the bunny) but i would advise you to get a proper cage designed for rabbits. they have deep trays on the bottom you see for putting hay and sawdust in also all the toys a bunny could dream of. the bottom or dog cages are quite shallow so and poop or peepee will just come riiight over the edge and cover your floor.
good luck with you're bunny

How do I get my dog over separation anxiety issues?

RoyalsOvaC

My dog is 1.5 years old and can not stand being in his kennel when I leave the house. When I get back there is a crazy amount of drool and slobber on his face and on the floor. It has gotten even worse lately with him paying at the door until his foot was bleeding. He even starts to bark non-stop when I place him on a zip line in the back yard.

Answer
The drooling means he's claustrophobic, I know it sounds crazy but my mothers dog did the exact same thing, no matter how much she worked on training her to like the crate my mom would come home to a dog that was soaking wet and a crate tray full of slobber and drool. The only remedy was for her to put the dog in the bathroom with a baby gate up. The dog was much happier in there, maybe you can try using the kitchen and blocking it off with baby gates, he might be happier.

As for the barking in the back yard is this all the exercise he gets? If he's left alone in the back yard to run on the zip line then he's bored and frustrated, frustrated dogs bark to relieve frustration. If you are out there playing with him then he is probably less likely to bark, or if he's being taken for long walks or runs then he will be less likely to bark.

I'd try leaving him in the kitchen when you go out, you'll probably find he does a lot better.

How to help a dog that has separation anxiety?

Like I mentioned before, I've just grown aware that my beagle dog has separation anxiety. What are some tips or advce you guys can give me to lower his separation anxiety. I hate seeing him sad when I leave but I have to work and his dog kennel is where I have to keep him otherwise he'll break everything inside the house.

Help?
I've thought of getting him a mate but I'd rather just wait a little longer.

Answer
Unfortunately, an adult dog with separation anxiety is a tough situation and there are next to no options to correct it once it starts.

You just have to do the best you can to protect the dog and your home when you leave. Couple of ideas for you. that you might try though. (1) being as how it is a lone beagle, I think a companion dog is perfect. Beagles are more 'pack' oriented than any other breed of dog. They hunt in packs and think with one brain - this trait has never been bred out of them. So a companion dog is probably a good option. I don't mean a dog to reproduce with (as in 'mate'), just a doggy friend, preferably another beagle. Beagles just operate so very differently than other dogs so if you are considering another friend, another beagle would be ideal. Seriously, a singleton beagle is a miserable animal as you know. (2) Get a 'busy ball' and learn to be creative with stuffing it with treats, peanut butter, spray cheese, frozen things, etc. Kongs are mostly used which is a brand name, but there are other varieties. I just call them all a 'busy ball'. It keeps them occupied for a while. They work very well with beagles because they are so very food driven and so can distract them from their isolation for a fair amount of time.

I do have a message for others although it is way too late for this to be of much help with your adult dog. The key to not having separation anxiety in adulthood is proper crate training in puppy-hood. Having a den (often even more than one den) is a natural canine instinct and preferred behavior. Puppies just come from a litter + mom which is the perfect 'den' time and is learned for life thus we should immediately build on that natural safety instinct and not 'unlearn' our dogs from it. If a kennel is always open and available for a dog and it is his 'home'. then he seldom will mind at all when you use it to close him up when you are away. If kennels are trained like this is his personal sanctum - ideal safest most comfortable place on earth for him - a place he can go voluntarily when he wants some peace and quiet - a place where no other distraction or animal is allowed - the place where he can relesh his most special treat, INSTEAD of trained like this is your jail cell when I abandon you, then separation anxiety never or only very rarely ever occurs. There are a few other things you can do to help a puppy to avoid separation anxiety for life, but proper kennel training is the main one.

One last item since I'm on the subject, proper kennel training is NEVER a part of potty training! Never teach a dog this is where I am going to lock you up until you have to wallow in your excrement forever until I decide you can get out of this sewer. Using a kennel that way (plus as the jail cell mentioned above) ensures hatred of the kennel and later separation anxiety and always using the house as the toilet.

Proper kennel training = house breaking success AND separation HAPPINESS. It is a WIN WIN! I would bet that if people understood and did proper kennel training, the average dog populaion in shelters would instantly be reduced by 50%. Two of the biggest reasons dogs are put in shelters is because of separation anxiety and potty issues.

Good luck

I have a 3 month old almost 4 beagle who keeps peeing in her kennel and all over the house?

Jessi

She won't poop in her kennel ever anymore, but it's like she can't hold Her pee. We have been potty training for about a month and a half now, but when she's out and about she pees a little here a little there. We have had her seen by vets and they are treating her for Giardia again, and they haven't seen anything indicating kidney problems or a UTI. She drinks a lot of water as well and her urine is like water, not concentrated at all. Also she Is perfectly fine with everything else. Does anyone have any suggestions or have had similar problems?

Answer
How much is she's drinking? Sometimes when the dog is well hydrated it can make their urine a little clear.

Otherwise if it's not that it would be a urinary/kidney problem.
Have you thought of getting a second opinion?

Iv'e attached a link to a forum that also has a dog with clear urine with no other symptoms. Maybe you could find a better answer there to what's wrong with your dog.

I have a malteese, and a papillion, about 4 years old! They still pee on the carpet in my bedroom in the same spot all the time! They will go on rugs too , if I use them! They have done it so much , I can't get the smell out, and the carpet is so worn out in that spot! I put tile in the rest of the house, but I can't afford to do my bedroom yet! I have grass in the back yard, and a doggy door, so they can go out whenever they want! Usually when it's cold , or rainy, they don't want to go on the grass, so when were not looking, they go on the carpet! I use a little green bissel to spot clean, but it seems to be making it smell worse! I can't sleep at night, because the smell bothers me!
Can anyone help me , before I tear out my carpet, and just live on conctete, untill I can afford to put more carpet or tile in my bedroom?
Even If I could afford it , I don't know what to replace the carpet with! If I put more carpet, they will probably pee on it too, and tile would be kind of cold!
I potty trained them when they were puppies, and I've been a stay at home dog owner most of their lives, so I take them out alot!

Answer
House-training an adult dog isnât much different from house-training a puppy â in fact, your adult dogs should be able to âhold itâ for much longer than a puppy, making retraining an adult less labor intense. Dog crates can be useful training tools when it comes to correcting house soiling problems, because dogs generally will not soil in their immediate environment. However, if your dogs have never been placed in a crate, take care to introduce him slowly.
Sry forgot to add that the last link is for home remidies to take out pet odors. Hope this helps.

Also, consider that your dog may define home differently than you do. To you, home may be a multi-story house, but your dog may see everything beyond the kitchen (which he has kept spotless) as âoutside.â By restricting your dogs to a smaller area for a while, and then gradually extending their home area, you can help them learn the ropes.

The procedure: Take your dogs outside, on leash, to a regular âtoilet areaâ and give them a food treat for eliminating there. Try to keep âtoiletingâ walks brief: If they are going to urinate, itâll probably happen right away. If you do not have immediate success with them, take them for a longer walk, try using a different leash, or try exiting from a different doorway. This way you can emphasize that a bathroom walk has only one purpose. If they don't cooperate in time allowed, return indoors and supervise or restrict them, then repeat the bathroom walk in 15 to 30 minutes.

If you discover an âaccidentâ after the fact, clean it up without a fuss â punishment today wonât stop the behavior from being repeated tomorrow. Usually, consistent supervision or confinement and regularly scheduled bathroom walks (donât forget the rewards!) will eventually teach your dog what is expected of him. If you catch him in the act, tell him ``no,ââ but resist the urge to shout. Instead, reward them lavishly when they go where they are supposed to.

In addition to the above measures, it is very important to clean up previous messes. Physical cleanup or masking the odors won't do, instead try a proprietary odor neutralizer should be used. These products contain enzymes or live bacteria that destroy the odors at the source by breaking down the molecules. Without these measure the dog will be attracted right back to a previously soiled area. This will include shampooing the carpet and furniture thoroughly.

Remember animals have a very behavioral nature and they are probably trying to out-mark each other so you have to be very routine as animals love routine. Work with both of them at the same time so they observe each other in training. It may be necessary to take them to a dog trainer to get help with this issue or call a local trainer in your area who can work with your dogs at the house. Make sure if you take on this endeavor yourself that you are able to spend ample time with them as that is what it will take to accomplish this.

how to keep an energetic dog entertained and busy when not home?

vaishya va

i live with a 2 year old male husky dog who seems to have unlimited energy and giant sized stamina. Regardless of how much i play him or take him out for physical activity, he never tires out. In fact i will get tired faster than he will.

And as a result he is often restless and very playful.

When i go to work he is left alone at home all day with sufficient food and water. How to keep him entertained and busy when he's alone for several hours a day?

Answer
Wow--that's a tough one. Here's the deal: good sled dogs run up to 100 miles a day...in the snow...pulling a sled. That's the kind of breed you have. So unlike most who complain about this issue, your problem really is about the breed rather than an owner that expects a dog to just lay there all day and play fetch for 10 minutes.

The short answer is that there is nothing you can do that is going to solve the problem if your dog is crated for 8-9 hours during the day. Putting the dog outside will work for about 1 hour and then he'll start trying to dig under the fence or begin obsessing about birds or passing sounds (which will turn him into a barking maniac--not good). Turning on the TV will quickly become a nonfactor--it will become background noise. Putting dog entertainment CD's or DVD's on is a joke. A good bone or rawhide....well, if your dog is like I suspect he is, he probably finishes off a good rawhide in 30 minutes or less.

You've got a couple of options, none of them easy and none of them free. They all start with you being willing to give your sled dog a good workout in the morning and evening. Instead of reading the paper when you get up in the, put on some headphones, listen to the radio and take a 20-30 minute run with your husky. And plan on taking a 30 minute walk every evening. If you want variety, than get some roller blades. Also try throwing a ball for 10 minutes in the evening as well.

Also, these are smart dogs so you don't just want to push them physically (by going running or a long walk) but also do tricks with them--challenge him mentally.

1. Hire a dog walker. Have someone come to your house mid-day to walk your husky every weekday. It will cost you something like $10-25 a day. But for a 30 minute walk, it will get your dog out of his crate and take the edge off him when you get home.

2. Put him in doggie daycare. Not some place where he's crated all day with 1-2 short bathroom breaks. But one that has space where he's let out to play with other dogs for an hour or so each day. Or look for someone else who has a dog of similar size that your husky plays with well. Offer a trade: if the neighbor will let you keep your husky at their house during the day (so the two dogs can interact and he can be out of his crate most of the day) and maybe 1 outdoor potty break, you'll walk both dogs together for 30-45 minutes after work each day and then take them both to the park to run around on the weekend.

3. Sign him up for a couple of classes. If you can't do the dog walker or doggie daycare, then you need to enroll in 2-3 classes or performance activities during the week. These become things for your dog to look forward to. They get "this is thursday, it's my flyball class" or "this is saturday, time for weight pull." It will improve your bond with your dog, provide physical and mental stimulation for him but also gives him something to look forward to. Once you get into a routine, it makes it easier for him to handle the long day in his crate.

4. Join dog performance activities (agility, weight pull) that you do on weekends. This probably goes in tandem with the idea of classes (because you can't compete effectively without taking a class).

5. Push the dog harder. Get a dog backpack and load it down with water bottles so the dog is carrying more weight. Get some instruction first but then buy a harness and have your dog pull weights on your own. If it snows in your neck of the woods, have him pull you on a sled. The idea is--make the dog work harder. For indoors, there are dog treadmills. They're expensive and not all dogs love them. And you can't just put a dog on and forget him--it requires surveillance. None of these activities work unless you're willing to get up early and push the dog hard in the morning before you head to work.

We recently got a healthy, happy cocker spaniel who had a brief career (few months) in the show dog ring and are surprised that while he does his business on morning and evening walks, he has less control in and around the house throughout day. We'd like him to do in designated area. We've tried the special gravel, pads, crating (at night). We think he was kept in garage kennel with his former original owner who raises lots of show dogs. Not sure how that childhood plays into current situation.

Answer
I think you would train him similar to a puppy. Take him out the same door (on a leash to start) and take him to the same spot everytime. In a corner or something an area about 5ft x 5ft and command them to go potty. When they do reward them by saying their name and how good they are. The bigger fuss you make means more reinforcement for the dog. If he does not go in that area w/i 10 mins, than bring him back in and try again in 10-15 minutes. It is gonna take a little time and work, but it can be done. You can also try the Pee Post from Petco. It works on the same principle except that you put a yellow pheromone treated post in the center of your imaginary box.

What is the difference in kennel clubs?

I'm a dog lover trying to figure this out! I've heard of akc ckc etc. but I don't understand them. I'm wanting to eventually show a dachshund and maybe if she passes all health and fitness and maybe win a show or two breed her bit only if she passes requirements. But I need help understanding all the kennel clubs. Like what are differences how are they connected or what ever also tips on training a show dog and also how do I pick out a show quality dog?

Answer
You've posted from the US site, so you need a dog that's eligible to show conformation in the AKC. A Canadian born dog that's registered with the Canadian Kennel Club can be registered with the AKC and then shown.

The CONtinental Kennel Club is a con. It's for backyard breeders and puppy mills. Pups that only have ConKC papers are not eligible for AKC registration or AKC conformation events.

If you are looking to get involved in showing, then you need to start here: http://dachshund-dca.org/ It can put you in touch with local clubs/groups and local showing breeders.

Answer
Vet, premium quality food, crate, bed, food bowl, water bowl, collar, leash, 25 foot lead for safe play, treats for training, Natures Miracle (an enzyme cleaner) & toys.

Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. The first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck.

Does anyone have any tips for raising a miniature schnauzer?

Ophelia

I'll be getting a miniature schnauzer puppy in about a month. Does anyone have any tips on raising it to be a good, healthy dog? Also, does anyone have any good name ideas for her?

Answer
I have two miniature schnauzers and they are the best dog in the entire world IMO. I love them so much and they are so neat and clean and loyal!
here are my tips:
1) Make sure your mini has a VariKennel. They love their little crates. CRATE TRAINING IS THE BEST METHOD! Do not go there with the newspaper training! I had my first mini housebroken in one week and my second one it took about three weeks.
2)Enroll your mini in obedience classes now! They need to be properly socialized. Minis should never be aggressive or timid.
3) Do not buy low quality brand pet food. Try Eagle Pack Holistic or Purina Pro Plan or Solid Gold.
4) Minis seem to love plush stuffed toys.
5) Routine, routine routine!
6) Pick a groomer that knows how to properly groom a mini. Its easy to go to a Pet Smart location, but often they are not trained to groom a mini the way they should be. Your breeder will tell you who she recommends for grooming.
7) Go to www.simplyschnauzer.net for an amazing forum for everything schnauzer!
8) I would call her Bella, Eva, Hannah, Angel or Glory

What should I expect to pay monthly and what should I purchase? Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

How much does it cost to buy all the things your dog needs? (Bed, food, bowls, bones, etc.)?

Nicky

For the first day?

I'm an adult, and I think I found a dog I want to rescue. I just want a ballpark for how much to spend at the pet-store. What is reasonable?

What do I need to buy?

Answer
At the petstore alone probably around $500, then to the vet in the next 48 hours, another $200. Keep some in the pocked for emergency vet visits too. My shelter expects a donation of at last $200 per dog, dnno about yours though.

You will need to buy a crate, a cage (if you want to leave the dog home alone and give it some space to roam before it has full house privileges), a leash or two, a collar or two, a long leash, pee pads if house training, doggie poop bags, a dog bed, food bowls, food, a brush, lots of toys, nail clippers, a harness, a dog tag, dog treats, training treats, dog shampoo,

and thats all I can think of now.

Most affordable place to buy a 48" L, airline-approved, dog plastic crate? Esp. in Houston?

airline dog crate 700 on images of dog kennels wallpaper
airline dog crate 700 image

I'm having a devil of a time trying to find a 48" long plastic crate in Houston for my big GSD pup. All the stores I've checked carry nothing bigger than a 40 or 41" (and few do at that). I don't want a wire crate, which is the one thing they do carry in the 48" size. And online, the prices are really insane, mostly due to the shipping costs. I prefer to go with the plastic (like a Vari-Kennel 700 size) because I may end up moving out-of-state at some point, so I prefer having a potential double-usage for airline-approved travel. Plus, I also just think a plastic crate has a more cozy, sheltered feel than the metal crates, like the one which I have now and which I cover with a sheet (which he's destroyed).

Most sites I've checked online (and I've spent almost 3 days nonstop checking) have just a 40"L or 41"L crate. eBay had one Giant Vari-Kennel which (with shipping) would have been over $500. Craigslist Houston has nothing. My local Petsmart doesn't carry any plastic kennels over 40". The WalMart site doesn't carry any plastic kennels and I've even tried looking at a few feed stores in Houston, but again, nothing bigger than the 40" size.

HELP! Any suggestions and tips for places to look?

Answer
My only suggestions would be to check the local mom and pop type pet stores if you haven't already, and maybe other cities close by on Craigslist. Maybe even try and find a local Freecycle group.

Need help finding cheap plane ticket for me and my dog. can anyone help?

Cassius_Jo

I need to get from great falls montana to dayton ohio. Just me and my full grown german shepherd. I know i need to buy my own crate for him but thats about all i know. I need to leave ASAP. cant stress that part enough. I only have about 300$ to my name. thanks for reading.
Well HA! My mom just found one from helena to dayton for 200 plus 100 for the dog. thanks for taking the time to help me out though.

Answer
This isn't going to be the answer you want to hear, but it's not going to happen. The cheapest one-way fare from Great Falls to Dayton is just under $550 plus tax, meaning that it would be close to $600 just for the plane ticket. If you need a round-trip ticket, those are well over $400 before tax, but those fares also require 21-day advance purchase, meaning you couldn't buy that ticket and pay that fare for a flight sooner than that. (Even if you were wanting to travel with a week's notice, for example, you'd still be looking at paying close to $700 for a ticket.)

Additionally, flying with a dog isn't free -- in addition to having the proper crate, you'd also need to pay the fee to the airline for transporting your dog as cargo. Those fees depend on the airline, and could be as much as $100 each way.

To do what you want to do, especially on such short notice, is going to take considerably more money than you say you have right now. The only ways I can think of to save money on a last-minute plane ticket, such as Priceline or Hotwire, aren't advisable in this situation, because you don't get to choose your airline, and you might get put onto an airline that has restrictions regarding your dog that you can't meet. Again, this isn't the answer you want to hear, but unless you can come up with more money than what you have, what you're asking for just isn't realistic.

How can you build a small rabbit box?

I just got a little dwarf rabbit today from the shelter and i have him in a huge dog crate. I wanted to build him a little wooden box, but my fear is that he will chew away the wood and could get down to the nails. How can i keep the wood pieces together so that he wont get sick? Thank you!!!

Answer
You can just use a cardboard box instead. It's ok if he chews on it. You can just replace it when it gets too chewed up. Just be sure to use plain cardboard (not shiny or colored).

You can see my rabbits enjoying their cardboard box here:
http://rabbitsindoors.weebly.com/photo-gallery.html

You could also use a seagrass or willow hut, but they will cost a bit more. I like using the cardboard boxes because they are free. (or, if you don't have one, walmart sells packing boxes and you could get one for about $1).

How do I stop my dog from chewing his crate?

Kitty

I have an akita who has separation anxiety. We had a wire crate for him but he destroyed it and kept getting out. Next we built him a thick-wooden crate. He chews at it about half the time he is left in it and has managed to somehow get it worn down enough where he squeezed out. We nailed more wood so that he can't get out again but he will chew through it eventually. My question is, is there anything I can so to stop this? Mind you leaving him chew-toys in there does not work. He wont even eat food that I put in there until I am home. He HAS to be in his crate when no one is here because if he is not he gets into trouble. I also can't muzzle him because in order to get him into the crate we give him food (which he eats til we are gone)
I'm worried he is going to hurt himself.
- He only chews on his crate when no one is home (as this is the only time he is locked in there)
- I can't afford to spend 400+ dollars on a crate

I'll try bitter apple but I don't know if it'll work. Any other suggestions?

Answer
Purchase an aluminum dog box. He won't be able to chew & destroy this kind of crate.
Here is one example.
http://www.gundogsupply.com/great-day-road-dog-kennel.html?utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_source=googlebase&cvsfa=2266&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=47524541542d4441592d524f41442d444f472d4b454e4e454c&utm_content=pla&gclid=CNSu8_jxzrcCFUdk7Aod0g4ADw

I saw some aluminum dog boxes on ebay for under $200.

best dog kennel system image

Squatch

My dog just got diagnosed with Kennel Cough. He just started on antibiotics and just wanted to know when this poor guy will stop the horrible sound. Sorry I feel bad for the poor guy.
Well.. He is 1.5yrs old.. He does have his bordettella shot, so chill, he got an off strain according to the vet.
Yeah my dog got it from Doggie Daycare..

Answer
Unfortunately, kennel cough can last initially from 10-20 days and can rebreak when the dog is put into a stressful situation which puts stress on the dog's immune system.

So hopefully, the antibiotics work and you keep your dog happy so the kennel cough doesn't come back.

Is it possible to treat your dog at home for a canine cough?

AM Writer

I am afraid my dog might have kennel cough. He is coughing and wheezing a lot. Then again, he also does this when allergies are bad. I am going to take him to the vet next week, but is there anything I can do to treat his cough at home?

Answer
Baby cough syrup, humidifier, and ensure that your pup is continuing to drink water.

Ideally it will simply be the viral form of the disease and will clear up on it's own. However, it may turn to a more complicated disease depending on your dog's immune system, which is why the vet is important when you get around to it.

Where are a few pet stores that sell puppies in wayne nj?

dog crates kennel club on ... service from people focused on dog welfare, training and accomodation
dog crates kennel club image

Bridgitte

My mom wont let me get another dog. But I want another dog because i think my dog needs a play mate. So I want to go to a pet store look at puppies.

Answer
The DISadvantages of pet shops

Pet shops acquire their puppies from breeders who don't test their dogs for health problems. You can't look at a pet shop puppy (or any puppy, for that matter) and say, "Well, he looks healthy!" and think that that's the end of it! The health problems I'm talking about are inherited on genes. If your puppy has inherited those genes, these health problems WILL show up eventually, long after you've brought the puppy home.

There are health tests that can determine, with 100% accuracy, whether a puppy has inherited certain serious health problems. There are other health tests that can't say for sure, but can predict the risk. Responsible breeders do these tests. Breeders who sell to pet stores don't.

Pet shop puppies are frequently inbred. Most pet shops don't even have a copy of their puppies' pedigrees for you to look at. Instead, they mail it to you AFTER you've bought the puppy. And you receive only 3 or 4 generations, not nearly enough to evaluate inbreeding.

Pet shop puppies may have "sham" registration papers and pedigrees. More and more pet shops are avoiding the stricter documentation requirements of the AKC and registering their puppies with an "alternative" registry like the Continental Kennel Club, APR, APRI, NKC, and others. Now, the AKC definitely has its problems with people falsifying registration papers and pedigrees, but the alternative registries are even worse. If a puppy has registration papers from any of these registries, I wouldn't believe that the parents listed on the papers are necessarily the true parents, that the ancestors listed on the pedigree are the true ancestors, or that the puppy is even purebred.

Dog with bad temperamentYou can't see the puppy's parents. This is a BIG negative because the parents' genes can have so much influence on how your puppy turns out. If you can't see the parents, how can you tell whether they might have passed on genes for unhealthy structure, bad teeth, or a bad temperament? Virtually ALL puppies look normal and healthy and are friendly and playful. But as the puppies mature, the genes they inherited WILL begin to assert themselves, and that's when all the problems will start!

You can't see where the puppies were raised. Another BIG negative. The majority of pet shop puppies are raised in small wire-bottomed cages in outbuildings. They've never seen the inside of a house. Many of them don't even know how to drink water from a bowl because they've been drinking from hamster bottles since they were born.

Many pet shop puppies are hyperactive and noisy. Raised in a small cage, they haven't been able to run and play and explore like normal puppies, so they've developed frenetic habits like running in small circles and excessive barking.

Many pet shop puppies are nippy. Some were removed from their mother before 7 weeks of age. You'll remember that puppies need a full seven weeks with their mother so she can teach them "bite inhibition". If they haven't learned this lesson, their nippiness will be hard to correct.

Other pet shop puppies have learned to nip from all the people who take them out of their cages and play wrestling games with them. This encourages the puppy to growl and nip and mouth people's hands -- bad lessons that can be hard to correct.

Housebreaking is difficult in petshop puppiesMost pet shop puppies are hard to housebreak. Where does a pet shop puppy go the bathroom? Right there in his cage. It's hard to take such a puppy home and teach him NOT to go to the bathroom in his crate or bed when that's what he's been trained to do!

Pet shop puppies often come with illnesses. You bring the puppy home and a few days later he develops a cough, or diarrhea, or vomiting, or listlessness, or he starts scratching or losing hair.... this happens over and over with pet shop puppies. Kennel cough, parvovirus, coronavirus, giardia, coccidia, mange, ringworm -- these illnesses are commonly found in commercial breeding kennels and pet stores.

Pet shops often overload their puppies with vaccinations and chemicals. Because the puppies are exposed to so many illnesses, pet stores often overdo the vaccines, dewormers, and chemical baths and dips. Overloading the poor puppy's immune system like this is very damaging for his long-term health.

Finally, a major disadvantage of acquiring a pet shop puppy is . . .

You're supporting a bad industry. When you pay money for a pet shop puppy, you're encouraging the industry to keep doing what it's doing.

You've emptied one cage, yes -- which creates demand for another puppy to be born to fill that cage. Even if YOU are lucky and YOUR puppy turns out "okay", a large percentage of the others will not, and YOU helped provide the incentive for them to be born by buying the one who came before them.
So what seems like a simple, isolated purchase actually contributes to:

* The misery of female dogs who spend their lives in a cage, being bred again and again so people will have a "quick and convenient" source from which to buy.
* The misery of future puppies born with health and temperament problems.
* The misery of families who will buy these puppies and then struggle to cope with all the health and temperament problems.
* The misery of animal rescue groups who have to deal with all the pet shop puppies dumped on their doorstep when frustrated families give up on the health and temperament problems.

When you buy one of those cute puppies in the pet shop, you buy more than the puppy. You buy the budding physical, behavioral, and health problems created by the bad genes passed on by untested parents whom you never get to see or evaluate. And you feed a profit-hungry industry that's doing a lot of harm to innocent creatures.

why does my Daddy Dog like to play or even be close to his babies?

PrettyNPin

Mom plays with the babies all the time, But my dog which happens to be the daddy absolutely hates being around his baby. We are keeping one of his pups and we are currently crate and house training her. But if she even come close to him he runs and hides...We would like them to start bonding seeing as they will be with eachother for quite awhile...Thanks any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer
This is normal. Males generally don't bond with the puppies like the mothers do.

I think some more research on breeding needs to be done before you breed again, as this is common knowledge among reputable breeders. Get a breeding mentor with the kennel club you are registered with, and take all of their advice, as they are well experienced and can tell you what you need to do to be a reputable breeder.

Where is the best place to buy a dog crate?

dog crates on craigslist image

shakeyour@

I've been looking for a dog crate for my beagle/ basset hound but everywhere is so expensive! I bought a mesh one from walmart but she ripped that right up. Even Walmart for a cheap one is min 50 dollars for crappy quality! I keep looking on ebay but they are all too expensive too. If anyone knows of any place to buy a good quality dog crate for less money please let me know. Thanks!

Answer
You could try posting it as a need on freecycle.org...you could post a "want to buy" on craigslist.com, or you could try local rummage sales. Do any of your local radio stations have a program to buy/sell/trade items?

A crate is going to cost in the $50-$100 range for that size. I bought a nice one at Sportsman's Warehouse for my toy dog that was reasonably priced. Tractor Supply used to have the best prices on crates. Check out farm stores/hunting supply stores in your area for crates...they often have lower prices on pet supplies (and they are often much higher quality, as well).

Where can I get a good deal on a dog crate?

scat

I'm hoping to find a wire dog crate that is at least 33" H for under $100. Right now my dog has a 30'' crate, and it's a tad short. They seem to be just over at places like Petsmart/ Petco. Is there somewhere where they are a tad cheaper, on-line is fine!

Answer
Ebay or Craigslist. Or you could find a local rescue near you, and see if they'll trade you for your 30" crate + a donation to their rescue =) I know the rescue I volunteer for would do it because they're not losing out and they'll get a donation.

If you go to petfinder.com and type in your zipcode it'll bring up some rescues near you that you can contact.

Good luck!

"I dance i

Ok..its a long story but I will make it as short as possible. I need some ADVICE!!

I work at a dog kennel, and the owners of a wonderful Great Pyreneese have spent many thousands of dollars on this dog. I am almost positive that the dog was bought purely on impulse..they walked into PETLAND and walked out with a pup...now a year later the owners (who are from Taiwan) have boarded him for continuously 4 .5 months, when the owners got back to the States, they had an eviction notice to move out...so ..the dog was to remain here..I absolutely fell in love w/the dog!! I had offered dog sitting him in my home, but they said they were not sure what they were going to do with the dog. AHHH ..I came into work today and the dog was gone, the owners just handed over the leash to a dude, that want him for breeding to his mastiff. GRRR!!! My co-workers told me that the new owner called for the dogs vet records.and proceeded to tell them that his dogs have a skin condition, and one of his dogs died from it..mange maybe? ..
Well..as you can see the Great Pyreenese is going to have a shittyass life! He is most likely to be an outside chained dog..bred from crappypuppymill lines and over populate the area with More unwanted dogs, not to say that the Pyr has had ear problems (needed his ears flushed out) and will most likely have more ear prob. in the future.
What am I supposed to do?? I want to put the Pyr in a breed specific rescue, which if the previous owners had told me they were looking for a new home for him would have told them, and helped him be placed.
I feel so bad, this wonderful dog is going to turn into a mean old monster...

HELP ME!!

I have done some investigating, and I know where the dog is...anyone want to break the law with me and steal this dog?? I am terrified to do it though...
There is no ASPCA around here :(
Alei.. I live in South East Ohio. U can email me.

Answer
Hun, I'd jump any number of fences and shoot any amount of outback rednecks to get this dog for you, believe me.

You can do one of three things, you can

(a) Steal the dog
(b) BUY the dog
(c) LIE about the dog. Tell the guy that he has Epididymitis, and can't produce sperm. Make up SOMETHING.

I personally would try all three, with C being the first. B being the second, and A being the last (but wait a while before trying A, don't let this guy know too much about you!).

Boxer size?

emma

I have seen different sizes for every breed of dog but there is usually a standard size, with boxers, i have only seen the big, muscular ones until i came to the US and found the smaller, more delicate body.I'm also asking this b/c alot of people have told my that my German Shepherd mix is part boxer but i cannot see how that is possible since her snout is not all the way in and stocky like boxers.

Answer
Boxers in the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan & Great Britian are similar (leaner, more refined looking: some even have earned Championship titles in several of these countries to be International Champions), but in Germany, Holland & some other countries they are still bred to be very stocky, more barrel chested & "bulldoggy", like they were when originally developed as a breed.

There is a breed standard for each country's type with the most reputable kennel club registry, such as this for the USA: http://www.akc.org/breeds/boxer/index.cfm The breed standard sets limits on size (among many other things) that good breeders follow as a guide in deciding on mates. Unlike some other breeds (such as with Schnauzers), there is only ONE size - no division into miniature, standard & giant. In the USA, that is to be 21&1/2 to 25 inches - anything under or over is an undesirable fault. Because of the breed's current popularity, irresponsible backyard breeders & puppy mills, there are many less than stellar breed specimens in abundance.

By the way, some breeders in the USA adhere to the German type, particularly the ones who breed for Schutzhund ( http://iupucbio2.iupui.edu/bml/shutzhundboxer.html )& other 'working' dogs. Around the Cincinnati, Ohio area (which has a high percentage of German descent people), you generally see more German-type ones, for instance.

Being a mix, your dog may take more characteristics in it's head shape from the GSD than the Boxer & not get the short muzzle - or, she may not even have any Boxer in her. It's all guesswork with mixes, unless you knew one or both parents!

best wood for dog kennel image

luvslugg

We have a wood chip dog run and the urine smell is so bad that the dog is completely repulsed by it and won't go anywhere near it anymore. I am looking for something safe to use outdoors or possibly an organic / enzyme product. In the meantime I have been hosing it down and there are crazy mushrooms growing. I thought about another layer of woodchips...Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!
I have decided to take Sas1184's advice and rake the old mulch out. I am going to try this enzyme product called Odormute to treat the area then add fresh mulch. http://www.odormute.com/pet_index.html

Answer
I believe the wood chips underneath will get urine soaked and should probably be raked out and replaced. I met a dog in a kennel like this and I cant imagine how else you could do it as eventually the kennel became completely saturated. You are right about an enzyme product but that would get pricey with such a big area you might try Vinigar.

Could i make a guinea pig cage out of a old large dog cage?

kausgomu_m

I have a 6 year old Greman sheperd mix who is verry big. she has one of the extra large dog kennels. its whire not plastic or anything elce. the bace of it is plastic but i can take that out. also if i lined the bottem with something what would be good to use. i was thinking like wood and cardbord but would that work the best or do i have to do something elce.

Answer
Yes, you can use that and with some imagination, make a cool cage.

Be sure the piggie's feet would not be exposed to any wire flooring. This can cause very tragic injuries and sores. Wood and cardboard are not good choices for flooring. You need something more stable and water resistant like coroplast or linoleum.

See this site for some ideas:

How much does a pug puppy cost?

dog crates cheap prices on cheap dog crate cheap dog crate cheap dog crate description
dog crates cheap prices image

Aiden

I want to know how much a pug will cost with all the supplies and vaccinations. But if you can I would appreciate it if you gave me the cost of everything in the three different parts. The price of the pug and the supplies and the vaccinations. I thought pugs were about $400, but I have heard other prices. Oh and one more thing. I want a pug PUPPY! Thanks for your help.

Answer
It depends on the breeder. Sometimes breeders sell as low as $600, but I've always heard for a good purebred you need to pay as much as any dog - $800 or $800+
There is no real standard for dog breeds, so the price varies based on the breeder :)

Supplies also only vary based on the dog's size...Let us see:
Bed ~ $30-$100 (I'm pretty sure you can get cheap ones, but these tend to last longer and have the best comfy quality)
Food ~ $20-$70
Toys ~ It varies exponentially. Some toys cost a ton, others don't cost much at all. It really depends on the place you buy it from and the type of toy.
Crate ~ $20-$$$ ($20 is pretty much the cheapest, but people pay a TON for good crates. It ranges into the hundreds.)
Harness ~ $40 (Pugs need harnesses. Leashes are too much pull for them. They make pugs not be able to breath all that well.)
Dog Bowl ~ $20-$60 (I use a regular, cheap kitchen bowl. The expensive ones are outside my price range.)
Dog Shampoo ~ $4-$10
Treats ~ $5-$20
Dog brushes ~ $3-$10
This is based on my personal experience. It might be more/less expensive for you!

For an 8 week old pup: $52 for the first shots and checkup. $42 for the next 2 shots and check. $100 for the neuter or $112 for a spay. (Once again, an experience...might be more/less for you!)

Talk to your vet about bills after that. It also depends on if your dog gets hurt, ect. because vet bills vary depending on the emergency.

Hope I helped! ~ Good Luck! ~ <3

Hi! What is the best dog age to adopt for a labrador retreiver.. im 14 years old.. i wanna know??

Will there be a lot of vaccinations and demowrning if there like 4 months and younger???

and can u pleas tell me all the information about the labrador retriever?

How many times should we comb his/her hair?
How many times do we check him up at the vet?(age)
How many times do we feed the dog?(age)
How many times do we exercise a dog?(age)
What is a good dog food for the age ur tellin me??
What does the labrador retriver need for example crate and toys? what else??

Answer
What is the best dog age to adopt for a labrador retreiver.. im 14 years old.. i wanna know?? No earlier then 8week old+, but adult will bond with you just fine. Its ILLEGAL to sell a puppy under the age of 8week old

Will there be a lot of vaccinations and demworming if there like 4 months and younger???
Easier Vet Trips. Puppies need a series of puppy shots and fecals, then a rabies shot, then surgery to spay/neuter them, and generally a trip or two to the emergency vet after eating something dangerous. (All of this usually adds up to substantially more than you paid for the dog!) When adopting an adult dog, the adoption fee should get you a dog with current vaccinations, this is altered, heartworm negative and on a preventative, at the minimum

How many times should we comb his/her hair? At least a couple fot times a week, a thorough brusing, brush daily. You NEED more then 1 BRUSH by the way.

How many times do we check him up at the vet?
a REPTUABLE breeder will general give shots at 6week, think there a shot at 6month as well, as another shot as well

Adults only need a yearly trip to the vets, and puppies require it abit more frequently a reptuable breeder or animal shelter will tell you how frequent

How many times do we feed the dog? 8week-6month=3 feeds, daily-Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, 6month-12months=2feeds daily, breakfast and dinner

How many times do we exercise a dog? Start slowly and get him used to the lead and collar 1st, he can be walked safely with a little caution after his 1st vacination. Myth #1:
âPuppies should not go to puppy classes/the mall/friendsâ houses until they have had all their vaccinations at 16 weeks/6 months of age.â (Fails all three tests)
This one lands squarely at the top of the âdangerous mythâ category. Itâs generally perceived as credible by new puppy owners because itâs often offered by the pupâs veterinarian. While it appears scientifically sound on its face (unvaccinated puppy at risk for contracting deadly diseases!), puppies who arenât properly socialized are at a
much greater risk for developing behavior problems, including aggression, that are likely to shorten their lives. The vet is right on one hand â the best way to ensure
that your pup isnât exposed to dog germs is to avoid other dogs. However, while itâs certainly true that you want to prevent your pupâs exposure to unknown and/or possibly
unhealthy dogs (and their waste), it is critically important that your pup get lots of exposure to the rest of the world, including healthy puppies in a controlled environment, before the critical socialization period ends at 12-16 weeks â or risk
serious, sometimes deadly, behavior problems.
In addition, during the period leading up to 4-6 months, your pup has protection from his motherâs immunities, and is receiving âpuppy shotsâ to cover that period of time when his motherâs protection starts to decrease. Not only is it âokayâ to take your pup places while exercising reasonable caution, you have an obligation to provide him with extensive socialization in order to maximize his chances of leading a
long and happy life.

Labrador Retriever
Coat
The Labrador Retriever is a double coat breed. The outer coat is straight, short, very dense, and hard in texture. The under coat is soft, weather-resistant, and protects this breed from cold, all types of ground cover, and water. The color of the coat comes in chocolate, black, and yellow. This breed is an average shedder.

Overview
Originating in Newfoundland during the 1700s, the Labrador Retriever was imported to England in the early 1800s. This breed is among the oldest of the modern recognized breeds. Their versatility and endless positive attributes have made the Labrador Retriever a popular family pet.

Character
The Labrador Retriever is medium in size, strong, athletic, and well balanced. They are friendly, outgoing, and possess an extremely sweet personality. There are two types of Labrador: The American, which is tall and lanky, and the English, which is more thick and heavy. This sporting breed is adept at hunting and retrieving. Labrador Retrievers are revered as companions and highly respected for their loving nature.

Temperament
This breed is highly intelligent, loyal, and deeply devoted. The Labrador Retriever is reliable, affectionate, and thrive on human companionship and attention. They are absolutely wonderful with children and get along exceedingly well with other dogs. They may be reserved with strangers and make good watchdogs. If this breed is left alone for extended periods of time without attention or stimulation they will become lonely, bored, and destructive.

Care
The Labrador Retriever requires regular grooming with a firm bristle brush. Special care should be given to the under coat to prevent mats and tangles. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be done when absolutely necessary. Labrador Retrievers are prone to elbow and hip dysplasia, eye disorders, and PRA.

Training
This breed is easily trained. Early socialization and basic obedience are recommended. The Labrador Retriever is very strong and must be taught not to pull on their leash. They do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. The Labrador Retriever needs fairness, firmness, consistency, reward, and respect. They excel in tracking, police work, search and rescue, agility, competitive obedience, guide for the blind, and as service dogs for the disabled.

Labrador Retrievers need frequent exercise to stay happy and healthy. An urban or country environment with a fenced yard is ideal for this high energy dog breed. Labrador Retrievers love water and enjoy both swimming and retrieving. If you have decided that a Labrador Retriever puppy may be the right choice for your family, there are a few other things that you have to consider. You need to be aware that your Lab puppy will grow and will require proper exercise on a daily basis. Do you have the space in your house to accommodate such an animal, or a fenced in yard so that your dog can go out safely? Will you have enough time to spend on grooming your pet, and also on the training that may be required? Are you willing to spend the resources the keep your pet healthy?

Adopt from a shelter, pound & rescue, you'll save lots of money on the ential fee if you adopt, especially if yo ugo for the slightly grow up dogs-They are good dogs too, so don't knock them. Adoption fees are normally less then $300. However it does vary.

Think again that you'll only need 30dollars a month for the dog care.

Have you really thought about what getting a puppy means? If not, CLICK HERE!

2. Puppies are not housebroken! Most people work during the day and are gone for 8 hours or more at a time. Puppies need to go out on a regular schedule so they have frequent opportunities to eliminate where you want them to. Puppies can't wait for the boss to finish his meeting or the kids to come home from school. Adult dogs can "hold it" for longer periods and, often, a Rescue will have the dog housebroken before it is adopted.

3. Intact Underwear. Puppies chew! You can count on at least 10 mismatched pairs of socks and a variety of unmentionables rendered to the "rag bag" before a puppy cuts all its teeth. Shoes? yes, puppies like to chew them also. Expect holes in your carpet (along with urine stains), backs and pages missing from books, stuffing exposed in couches, and at least one dead remote control. No matter how well you watch them, it will happen. This is a puppy's job! An adult dog can usually have the run of the house without destroying it.

4. A Good Night's Sleep. A puppy can be very demanding at 2am and 4am and 6am. Puppies naturally miss their littermates and a stuffed animal is not a substitute for puppy pile with littermates in the dark of night. Prefer peace and quiet, an adult rescue dog usually sleeps through the night?

5. Finish the Newspaper. With a puppy loose in the house, you will NOT be able to relax when you get home from work. Do you think kids ever really feed the dog? Clean up the messes? Walk in the pouring rain every hour to get the dog housetrained? If so, you probably have a severe case of denial. An adult dog will generally sit calmly beside you as your workday stress flows away and your blood pressure lowers as you pet it.

6. Easier Vet Trips. Puppies need a series of puppy shots and fecals, then a rabies shot, then surgery to spay/neuter them, and generally a trip or two to the emergency vet after eating something dangerous. (All of this usually adds up to substantially more than you paid for the dog!) When adopting an adult dog, the adoption fee should get you a dog with current vaccinations, this is altered, heartworm negative and on a preventative, at the minimum.

7. What You See Is What You Get. How big will the dog get? What will its temperament be? Is it easily trained? What will its personality be like as an adult? Will it be hyperactive? Adult dogs are, to steal a term from Internet lingo, WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get.) All of your questions are easily answered, because the dog is already an adult. You can pick large or small; active or couch potato; goofy or brilliant; sassy or sweet. Further, the rescuer and/or foster homes can help guide you in choosing just the right match for you. (Rescues are FULL of puppies who became the wrong match as they got older!)

8. Unscarred Children (and Adults). If a puppy does not teeth on your possesions, it will teeth on you and your children. Rescuers often get calls from panicked parents sure their dog is about to seriously injure their children. It usually turns out the puppy is just doing what puppies do, i.e., mouth or nip. Parents, too emotional to see the difference, just want to get rid of the dog. A growing puppy is going to put anything and everything in their mouth. It must be taught bite inhibition. As the puppy grows, the puppy's jaws become stronger and its teeth are replaced by its adult teeth. The mouthing and nipping it did as a puppy now can have serious consequences. Far better to get an adult dog that has "been there, done that, moved on."

9. Matchmaker Make Me A Match. Puppy love is emotionally appealing. They are so cute! But, in reality, cute is not a sufficient reason to get a pet, a pet that will probably live 15+ years. It may be cute, but cute can grow up to be hyperactive. It may be not want to share your home with anyone else, including your spouse, children, or other animals. It may want to be a couch potato, when the main reason you got the dog was to run with you every day. Pet/owner mis-matches are the MAIN REASONS owners "give-up" their pets. 60% of the animals in shelters nationwide are there for this reason. Good rescuers extensively evaluate of dogs and applicants to insure both will be happy with one another until death do them part.

10. Instant Companion. With an adult dog, you have a dog that can go everywhere and do anything with you NOW. You don't have to wait until the puppy grows up and hope it will like to do what you to do with it. With an adult rescue, you select the dog mos

I had been evicted from my house recently and tomorrow is my last day to move my stuff into a storage unit i had got. I don't have enough money to put a deposit on a new house(I rent) so I will probably be sleeping in my car with my dog. Im currently not employed either because I go through a temp service and it is hard for me to take any of the jobs they offer because the notice is less than 24 hrs. I live in Iowa and Im wondering where i am and am not allowed to park my car and sleep. I'm an 18 yr old female so Id also like some suggestions on where would be safest. I also would like to know of suggestions on what to do with my dog when I begin working. He is a 10 month old pit. Giving him to someone is not an option for me. I have a mental disorder which he helps keep under control. If anyone has any advice, please let me know. I've been on my own since 16 and had the issue of being homeless once as well, but I wasn't in quite such a mess as I am now. I'm already in debt and owe money to the city and the hospital and I just turned 18 about four months ago. Thank you for any advice.

Answer
you usually go to truck stops or a big 24 hour trave center , like Petro , and sleep in their lot . they are used to travelers parking over night . I have traveled a lot and truck stops is where i would usuall sleep . because it is safe and the cops dont bother you there. just dont do the dog poo there . like i said to that where you dont sleep .What you do is use diff places each night . so find a few places and rotate them. also , you only go to them to sleep , not hang out . so you leave in the AM and dont return untill you are ready to sleep. do your dog walk and poo before you go to your sleep places . you can search for truck stops and travel centers in your area on the internet. just dont stay in the same place everynight . you have to move around . and remember you only go to your sleep spots when you ready for lights out and sleep and then in the morning find another place to hang out during the day.

i guess you have a computer , so google " van dwellers yahoo group " and. just "van dwellers " they are people that live intheir vans and cars and having a place to park is always a topic of concern.
So you would prob find it interesting . In a car , the best thing to do is remove the front passenger seat and put it in your storage . they are easy to remove , just a few bolts . Then just use something like those plastic crates or what ever . and put that on the floor board where you removed the seat. then use long piece of plywood about 30 inches wide to make a bed . you put one end on the crate and the other end just lays on the back seat. This way you have a long enough space to sleep if your back seat is too short for you. A lot of people that live in cars do this .

Pug may be pregnant, What do I do to be prepared and help her???

Q. My 7 and a half month old female pug and 2 year old male pug have mated. They just did it this week so I am not sure if it has taken but I want to prepare for it just incase. They both have perfect health back grounds and bread from show dogs, but this is Maggie's first heat and she is so young I am worried what this will do to her physically and if she will be ok.
I called the vet and they said it was fine, just to feed her good food but I need more information. I need to know when to take her to the vet for a check up and what to ask. I need to know what food to feed her and what to do when she delivers. I need to know how to brake the sac if she cannot and what to do if she cannot break the cord. How will I tell if she needs a c-section? As you can tell I am scared. We have been keeping them apart but he got her while they were eating and once they were stuck it was too late.
If anyone could help it would be more than appriciated!! Thank you so much!

Answer
Don't be scared... Your gal may not be pregnant. But if she is, you can see her through things by remaining calm and collecting as much information as you can before her pups arrive.

You'll be able to tell that your dog is most likely pregnant when her nipples enlarge and darken in color. Her belly will swell over a period of about 60 days, and she may begin ânesting behaviorsâ: tearing up and rearranging blankets, papers, pillows and whatever else is available to make a nest for her puppies as their birth nears. Usually dogs start "showing" they're pregnancy when they're about 45 days along.

The general period of gestation for dogs is 58 to 62 days. Most puppies born before 58 days may not survive. The mom will need someplace quiet and safe from other pets, children, cross-traffic and distraction. You can use a whelping box or a large dog crate for this purpose. Or you can just let the dog whelp wherever she is comfortable. Birthing is messy, so also have clean-up supplies around so you can clean up the birthing area as soon as possible after all of the puppies arrive. Also keep a cellphone on hand in case you need to call the emergency room/ vet.

About 12 to 24 hours before the birth, the damâs temperature may drop a couple of degrees. If her normal temperature is, say, 101°, it may drop to about 99° or 98°. The only way youâll know if her temperature is dropping, of course, is if you regularly take her temperature. Twice a day â once in the morning and once in the evening during the latter part of her pregnancy â is usually sufficient.

The onset of labor is usually accompanied by heavy panting, pacing, and ânest buildingâ behaviors. The dog may whine throughout the process, shriek at the birth of each puppy, or be completely silent. When hard labor starts, the contractions become more severe. The damâs panting will escalate a bit, and she may âhunchâ over and/or lift her tail with each contraction. Just before the birth of each pup, youâll see the puppy as a âbulgeâ just under the damâs tail.

Usually the dam will remove the sac and bite the umbilical cord by herself, but new mothers may be overwhelmed and unsure of what to do when the first pup arrives. If you have to break open the birth sac, do it gently, and pull the sac away from the puppyâs head first. You need to make sure it can breathe. If you have to cut the umbilical cord, cut it with sterile scissors about ½â inch away from the puppyâs belly.

Puppies can come at different intervals. Some will come 15-20 minutes apart, others may be hours apart. It's not uncommon for some pups to be born feet first.

If you see any heavy discharge of blood⦠If the dam has been trying to birth the same puppy for 4-5 hours and the puppy isnât coming outâ¦If you see foul-smelling blackish-green fluid emit from the vaginal area (this usually means a still birth puppy is inside of her)⦠If the puppies are premature or undeveloped or any time you feel things just arenât going right call the emergency room/vet and get your dog immediate assistance. C-sections can be rough on dogs; it's best to let her have her pups normally if she can. Your vet can assist you with this decision when she's nearer her due date.

Otherwise, stay calm and just be there for your pug. Good luck!

Can you use a dog crate for a chick brooder?

Okay, so we are getting chicks tonight, and right now we are preparing their brooder. We were wondering if we could use our dog's crate for the chick brooder. If we cut a hole in it where we would hang the heat lamp, would that be okay? Thanks:)

Answer
I would imagine so as long as it isn't too enclosed so it doesn't over heat, there needs to be a good air flow.

Only day old chicks need intense heat (35C) and just for maybe 4-5 days then it can be lessened quite quickly to say 26-28C within a week if the brooder is indoors. How old are your chicks? If they all lie away from the red heat lamp it is too hot and you need to raise it, they they huddle under it they are cold so lower it slightly.

Best to get a thermometer really and pop it at floor level in the brooder directly under the heat lamp for an hour to see what temperature it actually registers before you get the chicks.

What is the best food I should be feeding an overweight 11 month old dashhound.?

Dora

He weighs 26# and I feed him 1 time per day (1 cup regular dog food) He is crated for 8 - 9 hrs a day with very little exercise.

Answer
I don't understand why you are feeding your CAT dog food and i have never heard of such a breed. No duh take him for regular walks and feed him TWICE a day take him to the vet to see what they recomend. If you don't you are not a suitible dog/cat owner. I don't think a dog should be left alone that long.
