Should I keep my cat away from others while she recovers from a spay?

Chitters

I borrowed a rather large medium sized dog crate to take her to the vet in. Huge, I know~ But this was the only carrier I had available to me so I jumped at it. All of my pet carriers were stolen out of my garage.

I was wondering if I should let her heal in it for a day or two since I have three other cats and three dogs in the house.

Answer
I would put her in a room by herself with the crate open so she can come out are her own will. Put a small amount of food and water in their with her because she is still going to be a little groggy. Make sure you put a litter box in their with her and I am not sure about getting a special kind of cat littler but I would ask the vet about that. Keep an eye on her stitches and her because you don't want her to pull her stitches out. I would even suggest putting a towell or a blanket in the crate with her. I would wait a few days before bringing her back in with the other animals or let her do it at her own will but keep an eye on them to make sure they don't rough house with her and hurt her. Hope I could help.

how cheap can i get a dog crate and dog bed?

MAYDAY!par

my dog is a fox terrier, a small to medium sized dog, (about 15 pounds?) and he needs a new dog crate and bed because he out grew his old ones. how much could these cost me at my local pet store?

Answer
Have you tried Craigslist.com or Ebay.com? second hand shops might have them..but a small crate can be about $15-20 at walmart about the same for a dog bed too.

Should I take my dog to Australia from the UK?

Emma W

Hi I am emigrating to Australia in January. I am going to Melbourne. I am going out in a few days to check out the quarantine situation.
What I would like advice on is whether i should take him or not.
You see he could stay with my parents. I have been living with them for the past 4 months (since the breakdown of my relationship). My mini schnauzer (1 1/2 years old) is comfortable here, my father works from home and he gets regular walks. However he is very much my dog; we have a very close relationship and he is like my child. He follows me where ever I go.
I worry that without me he will be depressed.
However I am also worried that if I take him he will find the 30 days in quarantine too hard. He loves running and chasing balls etc and is such a happy boy.
I would really appreciate advice on what to do and also if anyone else has been through this how did their dog cope with the quarantine? Also what is quarantine like? Do they get exercise or are they just kept in a small enclosure?
Sorry for the rambling but I really need advice.
Thanks

Answer
This site says to read the pdf information before contacting the quarantine stations>
http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs/countries/cat2

This is a quote from that site>
You can visit and interact with your pet during its stay in quarantine. As visiting hours differ between stations, please refer to the individual Quarantine Station information sheet for further details .

AQIS does not allow the visiting of animals on the day of arrival. Man playing with dog

Staff are busy making the trip to and from the airport, checking your pet into the station, providing food, and water and settling the animal into the accommodation.

Our staff are experienced and carefully selected, ensuring that cats and dogs receive expert care and attention throughout their stay in quarantine. Staff are fully trained and in many cases have prior experience as veterinary nurses and boarding kennel attendants. Cats and dogs will be assigned a carer who will attend to them throughout their stay.

I have a large dog crate, can I use it as a cage for a rabbit?

Kendyl

I have a large dog crate, its probably 4 or 5 by 4 or 5 ft. The bars are maybe an inch apart?
If I put a sheet of plastic at the bottom and running maybe an inch or two up the walls and put the usual rabbit toys and bedding and such would it work as a cage?
If not why?

Answer
Yes! My bunny Candi uses my puppies large dog crate from when she was potty training. My dog crate already comes with a plastic sheet, and she likes it. We made a second story out of wood and it is 1 foot off the ground. She loves sleeping there, and she still has plenty of room to stand up on her hind legs on the second level and first level.

The dog crate is way better than a expensive but too small crate from the pet store. I would say use it! But, with dog crates your bunny may scatter hay out of the cage, so we made a border out of coroplast, and it works just fine.

Good luck for you an your BunBun (:

I have a German Shepherd puppy. Videos that I have been watching say that I should get a dog crate wherein my dog can stand sit and turn. I've been thinking that if I do get such a size, my dog's growth will stop because of the crate. Also, German Shepherds are large bred dogs. What will happen when it grows up? I find it too expensive to buy a crate everytime the dog grows bigger.

Answer
It will not restrict his size. He might be uncomfortable in a crate that is too small AND you should never leave him in there for too long. My bullmastiff has the largest crate we could buy (even through special order). He now is too big for it, but still sleeps in it every night with the door open...voluntarily. I would never leave him in it for long, but if I can't put him outside when I leave for short periods of time due to weather, etc, I will close the door. He can still stand up and turn around in it, but I would never leave him in there for more than an hour or two...and he LIKES the cage.

As far as restricting growth...as I said before, it won't. My dog is now over 100 lbs...I do not think his growth has been restricted in the slightest.

Buy the largest one you can buy...german shepherds are not as big as bullmastiffs, but they are still very large. If he seems to like it more cozy, divide off part of the crate so the area is smaller while he is still little. My dog didn't care wither way.

How can I stop my new dog from bothering my other dog?

help pleas

We recently adopted a (98 lb. 7 year old) Giant Schnauzer *sp* We have two other dogs a terrier and english bulldog. Everything seems to be going fine besides the fact the new dog is obsessed with our male terrier's private area.(both are neutered males). This is causing the terrier to become very annoyed and cranky.(growling, snipping) Does anyone know how to fix this?

Answer
honestly, when our puppy starts bothering her big brothers too much, or our 16 yr old cat, we just intervene and tell her to stop. if she continues she gets a timeout in her chair until she settles down.

letting them work it out is rarely a good idea. our pup is 15 lbs and the older dogs are up to 100.
crating can work, but i hate to use it for a punishment.

Can you show an Albino dog in a dogshow?

kennel club best dog for children on dogs is creating a pet therapy program for New York's leading children ...
kennel club best dog for children image

Karsyn

Ok, so I am writing a children's book involving dogs.
(Well, mostly scribbling ideas, making a storyboard, and doing my research at this point.)

So, I was curious, can you show an Albino dog in the showring? AKC specifically, but if any other kennel clubs allow it I would like to know that as well. I can not seem to find any articles on it anywhere. But I may just no be looking in the right places? Any ideas?
EDIT:

The idea I had for the story was not to celebrate a serious fault such as this one. I was hoping to educate on the importance of proper breeding through a sad (think Where the Red Fern Grows or Old Yeller), but heart warming tale. Though I am not one hundred percent sure how I aim to go about doing this yet (as I am still in the very early stages of development) I was just hoping to confirm the fact that Albinos cannot be shown due this defect. Just if you were curious~

Answer
No self respecting breeder is going to bench an albino anything at a conformation show. That said, take a look at the AKC breed standard for the subject breed.

You can, btw, show albino in the AKC performances classes (examples: obedience, rally, agility, tracking, etc., etc.); so if you write your story around one of those events, you can maintain some plausibility.

Hopefully your story line will consider undue prejudice vs valid concerns in some fair way; hopefully the story won't attempt to celebrate this serious genetic fault.

What is the difference between an old english sheepdog and a bearded collie?

amrefr

I'm sorry if this seems like a stupid question to dog experts, but we are looking at dogs and I want to know what I am getting. I'd like to know the difference in the breeds and their personalities. Any insight is appreciated. :)

Answer
Even though I am not a big fan of the American Kennel Club ... the information they have on dog breeds is very extensive and accurate ( as it pertains to my dog who is a mix of Chow/Collie mix ) their website is

http://www.akc.org

The biggest thing to look at with those breeds is they have to have exercise and a job... if you have children or other animals both breeds will "herd" and can become a problem. These are working dogs so they NEED a job and exercise or they will not be as happy as they could be. They both will make great friends and they have wonderful personalities, you will laugh your a** off at the stuff they do. One big point to consider in your choice is what type of home do you have, as an apartment (even a big one) will not cut it for them.

The fact that you are doing your research prior to bringing one home is wonderful, as most people just say " oh he's cute" or "wow that the same dog Paris Hilton wears in her bag". So I respect you for that.

In my opinion, the decision to bring a dog into ones life and family is a big one. This animal is going to be your best friend, protector, activity partner and is going to love you no matter what.Your dog is going to feel your pain, happiness, excitement and sorrow. When adopting or buying a dog ask yourself this...

Am I right for this dog? As the dogs parent, protector, best friend and "owner" (i hate that term, ha ha) are you the right "breed" of human for him/her?

Do you need to have a health certificate for a dog?

In August we are moving to Korea to be with my Husband on a command sponsored tour, Do we need to obtain a health certificate for our dog? And do we have to pay for the dogs travel?
Thanks Dina, that site was very helpful! :D But on the travel expense of our pet, doesnt the military provide the travel expenses just not the care expense?

Answer
Yes, you will need to obtain a USDA/APHIS United States Interstate an International Certificate of Health Examination for Small Animals (APHIS Form 7001). The form isn't available online for download as it is in sextuplicate and the forms are numbered. It is only good for 10 days from the date stamped. You will also need a current rabies certificate. The rabies shot must be given more than 30 days before entering the country, but less than a year; South Korea does not recognize 3 year rabies certificates.

Not all vets (in the US) are USDA accredited to use the USDA form (APHIS Form 7001). You will need to call your vet to specifically ask about authorization. They will have a letter of authorization from the Area Veterinarian in Charge for that specific State. Your other option is to call the office of the Veterinary Services Area Veterinarian in Charge or the office of the State Veterinarian in your State to verify if a specific veterinarian is accredited or to obtain a list of accredited veterinarians in your area. The list is available at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/downloads/vsavic.pdf

The offices listed in the .pdf are where you then need to take or mail the form to get the actual seal affixed. If you are military, base vets are all accredited and most states allow them to possess/use the seal (which will save you a trip to the USDA office).

Current endorsement fees are $35.00 for the first animal and $6.25 for each additional animal listed on the form. Fees are scheduled to increase October 1, 2010. Fee info is near the bottom of the page. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/mrpbs/fmd/vs_import_export_fees.shtml#13020

They do also list the cost of endorsement fees if you need them signed outside of normal business hours (after hours/weekends/holidays). It also has the fee schedule for those going to England/EU/Japan or any country that requires a FAVN.

As for travel costs, no, the military will not pay for their travel and you should be aware that it is generally 2-3X more expensive to ship animals back to the US. You can, however, deduct them on your income taxes as part of moving expenses.

Most of the airlines have heat embargoes in effect for checked baggage and cargo pets from June through September as the temps will be above 85 degrees. Additionally, most of the Asian airlines (including KAL) will not accept the pet as checked baggage if the total weight of the dog (in the crate) is 70 pounds or more; it will have to go as cargo (which means additional fees will be collected at the quarantine office at ICN as well as being more expensive than checked baggage fees).

As long as your dog's rabies vax is within the stated time frame, the animal will not be quarantined. The same basically applies to animals going back to the US from Korea, except that instead of the APHIS form, you will get the Korean version.

If you are flying over with the MM, you will need to make arrangements at one of the base kennels as base lodging (like the Dragon Hill Lodge at Yongsan) do not allow pets. You should also be aware that some base housing is no-pets which means you will have to request a waiver to live off post.

What all do I need to bring home a new puppy?

Charlie

I'm bringing home my Alaskan malamute puppy in 2 weeks. I'm going shopping tomorrow and I need help coming up with a list. I know the basics but what are things that will come in handy that are east to forget?

Answer
This should've all been done months ago...

What is currently on your shopping list?
I am guessing you are buying, please correct me if I am wrong, but why not ask the breeder this?

You will need:
Leashes particularly one to put around your waist as the puppy learns how to go outside and you learn how to recognize the pups gotta go signs
Collars(preferably martingales)
nail trimmers
quickstop although flour or other powders work just as well
Dremel (introduce early and with positive associations)
Food(what are you planning to feed? if you say anything by purina, what the vet recommends, iams/eukanuba, grocery store/dollar store, Science diet, royal canin, etc., you need to visit this site: www.dogfoodproject.com and make sure kibble is what you really want to feed, then visit this site: www.rawmeatybones.com to make sure you know about raw feeding should you ever decide to feed the way nature intended dogs to eat)
Vaccines that need to be done, which is only rabies vs choose to be done. Don't let fear make you pump your dog/puppy up with formaldehyde, mercury, aluminum, foreign tissues, etc. Know what the shot is for, what it will do, and what it won't do for example lepto is a vaccine known for its high reaction rates, but no one seems to realize the two serovars in the vaccine are not active and carry no crossover immunity, and the bordatella vaccine is just as wrong with only two of the over 100 active strains, no crossover immunity, a six month duration of "protection" if you consider it such because no matter what you do, the dog will likely get kennel cough because it is the "common cold" for the dog world.
Keep in mind the vaccines go straight into the dogs muscle tissue, bypassing all known checkpoints that would alert the body of something foreign. A lot of problems can occur, just imagine an airline doing that. Not only that, imagine a combo shot...where does anyone come in contact with 5 different virus' at once. We'd all be dead if that were the case.

Anyway, continuing on with the list..
shampoo
Depending on what you feed: toothbrush and paste or raw fed dog
Crate big enough for adulthood with divider in it to use as the puppy grows
dog bowls unless you plan to feed raw or use current household dishes
Baby gates
training treats(although liver dehydrated is what I prefer for mine)

Are there any plans to have the puppy work in the future as an adult?
Do you already have a vet ready? If not, get started interviewing and finding a good vet. Not all vets are created equal. Your best way to find out is to ask a controversial question about vaccines, food i.e. raw, and see how they handle your question/statement. If they don't handle you voicing what you think about your dog well, go elsewhere.

The best thing to give your puppy is your time. Nothing you can find in a store will replace that. A tired puppy is a good puppy so if you haven't already thought about it, dog daycare is a good option for a puppy to socialize and wear himself out.

How much does it cost to ship a 3 lb maltese from Billings, Montana to Indianapolis, Indiana?

avontatert

I am wanting to buy a maltese puppy that is about 2.35lbs right now. I am really wanting her, and I have never shipped an animal across the United States. I don't know much about crate or anything but I could talk to the person who is giving her to me. I would like to know if anybody knows around how much it would cost me to get her or some good airlines at low prices. I am wanting to spend about $160 or less and I am wondering if that is even possible. Thanks for helping out.

Answer
Before you spend all that kind of money why not ask for a rescue group that does transports. We do Great dane rescue"s and they have a transport for dogs all over the midwest and Canada.
We have transported dogs from Danes to Daschounds with our group to get them to their destinations.
Try looking for dogs/transports and rescue"s to see if you can find any info on this for sure.
As far as shipping I am not sure what that cost best to contact airports and see what the charge is. Crates of course are extra and I am not sure how long this trip would take but I suggest you contact the Indianapolis International airport and some of the airlines to see.
I cannot see it costing that much but with the crate it sounds about right.

Good Luck:)

Traveling tips for solo drive with dog?

Cody

So... I'm 25 years old, preparing to take a lengthy road trip across the country in a car with my dog next spring. I'm currently saving money while living in Indianapolis and am eagerly awaiting this much needed experience.. but I want to prepare and get good advice from some people who know more about it.
My plan is to leave here and spend approx. a month or two on the road, mostly camping to prolong funds and spend some real time out in the open country. I am going to attempt and make a mapout of sorts, but I would also like to be able to "go with the flow" whenever I may feel the urge.
I fully intend on making sure my car is in good shape, and to gather everthing I may need, while still trying to maintain a reasonably minimal supply.
My end result would be to land in Austin and attempt to get my feet on solid ground with remaining funds long enough possibly stick around for a year or so.

so even though I'm sure the question is somewhat vague, and some of you are going to tell me all about how bad it could/will go for whatever reason.. keep in mind that the risk and/or possibilities are a big part of why I want to do it in the first place...so I am just asking for any advice, or good sources for more information, or useful tips, or even places I must visit... anything at all really, I have time to prepare and plan and no date is set in stone, so all is open right now. Thanks ahead of time

Answer
Austin Texas is gawd-awful hot in the summer so plan things for arrival in the Spring, say April-May. Your dog will feel comfortable traveling in a wire crate secured to the car. It is necessary to have some kind of carpet on the floor of this crate so that the dog can "hold on." Slinging around is not secure for them. You can also do some dog seat-belt arrangement.

There are so many things you cannot do with a dog. So forget going into a restaurant. Best bet is the drive up window and that gets really old. Don't even know how you'd manage to go to a grocery store.

Answer
You're going to get a lot of people saying the shelter or breed rescues, which are great options but since you unfortunately want an intact or unneutered male to breed your female with, you're going to have to look for a new litter of puppies.

Seriously though, if you're too damn stupid to find the dog you shouldn't breed.

What is the general layout of a dog kennel? Also I want to know if there is any specific kennel lingo that applies to the different rooms throughout the building?

Answer
It depends on the kennel. The one we take our yorki poo to has 3 different kinds of rooms. Plain (and only our dog is in that kennel); private room with french doors and a fancy raised bed (princess or racing car) and a private room complete with TV and raised bed. each one is slightly more in price than the other; but so are hotel rooms. They are walked 4x a day and you can buy play time etc.

What would be a nice professional name for a dog kennel/reptile breeding buisness?

E-Murda187

I would like to start up a dog kennel and reptile breeding buisness in the near future because I just love dogs and exotic animals, but what would be an interesting name for such a place. I'd like a professional name, of course nothing too dumb and corny or anything. What do you think of CanineHerps? I thought of that name because dogs are, of course called canines (or canids) and we associate reptiles & amphibians with herping, herpetoculture, and herpetology and I thought that name would fit, but what are some others that can tell people its a place for dogs and reptiles?

Answer
"What do you think of CanineHerps?"

Well...it would be an attention grabber, since most people would read it as Canine Herpes. That's what I did when I skimmed your question...

And sorry, but unless you're going to be a "satellite" agency to your local Humane Society and deal only with rescue dogs, I doubt you're going to get much help from the folks on this forum. We detest puppy mills.

Disney World - Stay In Park Or Out Of Park With 3 Kids And Dog?

best friends dog kennel disney on In what seems like the newest doggy trend, pets can relax on vacation ...
best friends dog kennel disney image

Lydia

My husband and I are overwhelmed with all the options of a WDW Vacation. We plan on going to the parks about 7 days of our visit. 5 people total and a dog. Are the kennels at the parks good? Or would we be better off getting a hotel out of the park that is pet friendly? There are so many pros and cons to both of these options I can't decide which to choose.
Leaving the dog home is NOT an option! I want the best for kids and dog.
Dog HAS to come with us. He is treated as a family member. We don't have anyone else to care for him anyway. If you have used the kennels at the parks please let me know how well your pet did and how you felt about the kennel experience.
This is going to be a one time Disney experience for my children so I want the best for ALL.

Answer
Normally I always recommend staying onsite at Disney. It is the best way to experience Disney, especially if this is a once in a lifetime trip. However, Disney does not allow dogs at their resorts (except for service animals). The only option you would have with Disney is Fort Wilderness Campgrounds, not sure if you are wanting to camp for the vacation, but that would be the only place you can bring your dog.

If you really want to stay somewhere nice that will allow pets and make for a really nice vacaton, I would recommend staying at one of the Universal Resorts. They are a little higher in cost then most of the Disney resorts, but very nice and worth the cost. I believe they charge a $25 fee to allow pets.

The other option is going to be offsite. If you choose to go this way, just be sure to do a lot of research. Many of the hotels offsite are not in the best condition. When they allow pets, the overall quality can be decreased, as many of them don't clean very well.

Just be sure that you find out all requirements that you need. You will likely need proof of vaccinations, and a paper from your vet stating that the pooch is healthy. You definitely don't want to get there and find out that you are missing something.

I personally have not taken my pets with me on vacation. One is pretty sensitive to heat, the other has allergies and things like that, and I have several pets, so it would be difficult to take them with me. Also, I've always been a little concerned how well the rooms are cleaned so that I know my dog is not going to catch anything from staying there. I've had some friends stay in pet-friendly rooms that they were not very satisfied with the quality. So, I leave my pets at home with their regular care-takers and things so I know they are well taken care of.

Now, as far as kennels, again, I've not used them. However, the people I've talked to that have has been very happy. I believe that Disney does require you come by a few times a day to walk your dog and play with them a little bit. So, you will have to schedule that into your day. I will include a link with some reviews of the kennels for you to look over.

I hope this helps!

does orlando studios allow pets?

Melody

is there some sort of dog boarding area? how much?

Answer
What is this "Orlando Studios" that you speak of? Do you mean Disney's Hollywood Studios? Or Universal Studios Orlando?

Both Universal and Disney have provisions for those who wish to board pets.

Universal Studios has a daytime kennel for cats and dogs only, and it is by a first-come, first-served basis. You must have proof of vaccinations, and you are able to leave your animals there from 8 AM to 3 AM. The kennel is locked after 2 ours after the last Universal park is closed, but you can reach them by telephone.

Further info: https://www.universalorlando.com/Resort-Information/Theme-Park-Services.aspx#kennel

Disney also has "Best Friends Pet Care" kennels available. Reservations are strongly encouraged to ensure you have room for your animal.

Disney's official info: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-services/best-friends-pet-care/

Disney resort guests have a base rate of $34 for an Indoor Suite, and you can pay up to $15 for a playgroup option, $4 for an ice cream break, $8 for a walk/explore option, etc.

Best Place to buy a Puppy in Charlotte,NC 28205?

I wanted a puppy but i just moved here with my family and i have no idea where the pet stores are in this state. Please help me find a good store. Thanks:D

Answer
Don't go to a pet store -- they only receive their puppies from mills. No breeder worth spit would sell their puppies to a middle man.

Don't use craigslist - you have no guarantee and no place to return the pup or complain if things go wrong.

Your best bet is to visit your local animal shelter. There will be numerous puppies and adult dogs available. Please consider adopting an adult or even a senior dog. They need homes too and often are fully trained and house-broken (a major plus!!!). Obviously - if you just moved with your family - it's going to be a family decision. So - get everyone together and figure out the characteristics you want in a dog. You may find out that you want a pure-bred dog. Then use the AKC's website to find a reputable breeder in your area. If no breeders are listed - try your local kennel club -- there are numerous AKC clubs (breed specific and general dog clubs) in NC.

GOOD LUCK!!

Answer
Go the website of the DPCA (Doberman Pinscher Club of America) and look at the breeder referral list for your area. Contact a couple of those breeders and ask them which Vet they use. Please don't just use any old Vet. You might be very sorry if your Dobe ends up with a crop like an APBT normally has, and once the ear leather is cut off, it can't be glued back on. Take my advice. You won't be sorry in the long run, but also keep in mind that if you want the ears to stand correctly, you have to be also willing to *post* them properly for months. If you don't, the whole procedure will be worthless. Oh, you didn't say how old your pup is. Cropping is usually done between 8-12 weeks on a Dobe.

Here: Scroll all the way down towards the bottom of this page, until you get to the listings for NC. You'll see a breeder under the kennel name of GOLDGROVE. Contact Sharon and she'll tell you who she uses. Keep in mind that Sharon is a VERY busy person, as she is not only a breeder, she's also an AKC judge, so you might not be able to get ahold of her on the weekends. She owned the Sire to my last co-owned show dog. My show dog was purchased from Gorrmae Dobes. Both Sire and Dam of my dog were finished Champions, not that it matters any to you.

I want to build a small, cheap, and relatively Earth-friendly home...?

best material for dog kennel floor on Reeds Sporting Goods: Stansport Camo Deluxe Dog Kennel - Large
best material for dog kennel floor image

trey

do you know the best way for me to do this? I don't have much knowledge or experience in terms of building... I am used to being in the office more than construction...

I would appreciate any non-judgemental input!
If the environment impacts the effectiveness or suitability, I live in temperate Southeast U.S.

Answer
Hi Trey,
First, get out of the office and look. Check out every building site, every home, even every barn or garage.
Check out the areas that you might like to build. Which suburb, which state? What are the necessities of the building. Is it freezing cold for 9 months of the year, or is it in the middle of the desert with 50 deg C days and 2 deg C nights?
Start making lists of what you require in a small home. 1 bedroom, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. List all of your requirements. Also keep a check on what you actually like. From designs and floorplans to building materials, to wall and window styles. EVERYTHING!!!
How much maintenance do you want to do in the future? Minimal maintenance is usually brick whereas mudbrick or strawbale require a reasonable amount of maintenance to keep them up to scratch.
If you want to owner build, start getting some experience. Every time you see someone building ANYTHING ask if you can help. This will also allow you to evaluate your skills that would help you decide if you can or actually want to build it yourself.
Go to your local library and borrow every book you can on architecture, building, self-sufficency, environmentally friendly building.
As you read more and evaluate your own skills you may well find your tastes change.
Surf the net. There is an absolutly incredible amount of info there. More than enough to get you started. If you live in an area (I am in Australia and there isnt anywhere the building code doesnt cover) where your building code doesnt need to be followed or you dont need approval there is enough info on the net to get you started and well and truly finished.
If you want to use recycled materials, find somewhere to start storing them. Be really critical of what you buy. There really isnt any point in collecting 30 beautiful doors if you only need 3.
Build something small. Start with a dog kennel - give it away if you dont have a dog. If you enjoy it great, if you hate it and dont finish then maybe owner building isnt for you.
I should clarify that here, owner building doesnt have to mean doing everything yourself. You can still contract out all of the work, it just means that you are not paying for someone else to organise the work being done.
Check out some of the kit home web sites. There is some fantastic small homes available. You dont have to order one, but its great to be able to see what the floor plan actually looks like in reality. There is some big difference in what is called small.
Given you lack of experience in building I would imagine the task is daunting, but there is a load of help out there, there is also many places that offer hands on training. Many books and websites offer a wealth of practical information. Much is written in basic terms.
Check out secondhand book shops, you may find some really helpful stuff.
Start saving money. You will need it in bucketloads. Small homes dont have to cost a lot, but they still cost.
Dont let your inexperience put you off. There is no reason why enthusiasm, ingenuity and self belief can not see you thru.
Good Luck
Jo

New German Shepherd owner, what can I expect?

Metallichi

I've recently acquired a beautiful female, 10 months old, but she needs work. I've read that I need to be very stern with my girl because of the nature of her breed. I've been walking her and slowly trying to get her to not chase my 2 old cats. She has free reign in the backyard, lots of toys, but she needs to learn to settle down in the house.
What should I expect from her in the next year or so?

Answer
10 months is not the ideal age for a newbie to take on a pup - that is traditionally when under-trained pooches perform in much the same obnoxious ways as do rebellious human teenagers. If she & you ARE under-trained you might get a week before she starts testing out your "boundaries" - both territory boundaries and behaviour boundaries.
But if she has been well-bred and well-reared and YOU do your bit re sensible & consistent training you should have 11 to 14 happy, fun-filled years ahead of you.

I am, of course, assuming that you have been sensible enough to get your bit.ch from a breeder who uses only hip-&-elbow certificated stock and is confident enough to supply a printed & signed Guarantee stating what he/she will do if any of the genetic "unthinkables" happens. If not, all bets are off, and you will have to keep you fingers crossed..

Your phrasing "I need to be very stern with my girl" indicates that you are either a poor reader or you have been reading the WRONG material.
The genuine herding breeds (Border Collies, GSDs, Heading Dogs, Huntaways, Kelpies, Malinois) have been developed to WANT to please their human, and so are the easiest to train of all breeds. The next easiest-to-train category is the bird dogs.
Although I was an obedience instructor in my early days, I do very little formal training nowadays - my pups mimic their elders, and so for "household" type training I just reinforce them when they guess right, reprimand them when they guess wrong. As I said - GSDs are easy to train.

What you should be doing right now is using a light happy voice to praise your bit.ch every time she does something right. Two reinforcers always being more effective than one, whenever she is close enough you also reward her - the obvious rewards are a pat, a chest rub or ear-base massage or croup rub, a game, a tiny tidbit (sliver of cheese, peanut, sliver of hard-baked liver, etc).
When she does something that is absolutely forbidden, reprimand her - the deepest sternest growl you can manage. Suitable reinforcers for that are stamping your foot on the floor or "snapping" her lead or throwing something light to hit her - I emphasise the LIGHT - a balled up sock is fine, as the intention isn't to hurt her, just to startle her and make her think that you have an amazing retractable/extendible arm that can reach her where-ever she happens to be. Time your growl to start just as you stamp or as the object hits her or the lead "snaps".
The lead "snap" is easy to show, difficult to describe. I operate with a straight-link slip chain (aptly nicknamed a "choke chain", because Sod's Law explains that if it is left on an unsupervised pooch the trailing ring WILL catch on something and the chain WILL choke that pooch) and a flat leather or nylon leash. I choose a chain with links open enough for me to put the tongue of the horse-clip through so that I can, when appropriate, lock the slip-chain to whichever size I need and it cannot then tighten to choke nor loosen to slide off - important if I tether a pooch outside a shop.
To produce a "snap" you must first ensure that the lead goes totally slack; then you either use the lead to flick the chain or you pull suddenly so that the chain tightens and pulls the pooch off-balance. With a dog that pulls you need to coordinate your arm to produce that slackness - slowly haul the dog back so that there is very little lead between you and it, and your lead hand is close to your chest; then punch your hand into the direction the dog is going - the result is instant slack, albeit not for very long; but long enough to then "snap" it.

Now go visit every training class within driving range (if you need contacts, ring your Animal Control Officers; local vets probably know of some training groups; if you strike out on both sources, contact your country's Kennel Club) then book yourself into the club that has happy dogs and happy handlers. Although training is basically common sense, common sense is nowhere near as common as it should be, and so being in a club means that you get advice on your use of "the voices", your body language, your timing, your use of rewards & reprimands.

I suggest you also join a couple of the 300+ YahooGroups devoted to discussing various aspects of the GSD. When a group's name attracts your attention, click on its name to go to its Home Page. Once there:
⢠read its "mission statement" to see whether they are likely to discuss what you want to talk about (some groups let you look through their messages; others are more secretive), and
⢠scroll down to the Monthly Activity "calendar" to see how much "traffic" they tend to produce - you want neither a group that is "dead" nor one producing so much that you can't cope with the flood into your Mailbox.

What crate should I get for my female siberian husky?

dog crates 36 on 36
dog crates 36 image

StarNo5

She is 3 months old, I really have no idea how big she is going get since she is my first husky.
Anyone here have any suggestion how big of a crate I should get for a female siberian husky?

Answer
Joie is the only one who has given you something close to a correct answer.

My Siberian females do fine in a 300-400 size crate. You DO NOT need to go any bigger, certainly not 48"!!

For a plastic crate, this will do:
http://www.dog.com/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemNo=380121%20MD
Go with the 36"L x 24"w x 26"H

For a wire crate, choose something with similar dimensions.

Good luck!

What size airline approved crate should I use for my 1 year old male Siberian Husky?

Katee

He is 1 year old and around 70 lbs tops. I am flying home and I want to order a crate from online but Im not sure if I should get a Large or XL??

Thank you!

Answer
I have a large Pet Porter, 36''. I think it would be just right for your dog. Unfortunately, activists have fussed to where the airlines require crates big enough for the dog's head to clear the top when it is standing. I measured and my crate is 24''-25'' floor to ceiling, perhaps not high enough for your Husky.

Remember the only person whose opinion counts is the airline employee whose name you have written down.

Do you think I should have a Bernese Mountain Dog?

My family and I live in a small town in New Hampshire in a house with about a 1 acre land surrounded by woods. Our family has two children, one is 12 , the other 14. We want a dog that will be friendly with the family, playful, and will enjoy walks. Do we have enough space, and is the Bernese Mountain Dog ideal for our family?

Answer
You have way more than enough space, you can live in a 1 bedroom apartment and have one.

The question is dedication. Do you want the children to care for the dog? If so this is a bad idea, children will rarely upkeep a dog, so be sure there is an adult available to step in!

Are you getting a puppy? if so make sure there will be someone there st first for potty training.

Make sure you have funds available for vet visits, supplies, and a fund for emergencies (or pet insurance). Make sure you get all vaccines, and make SURE you get a crate.

Are you going to make sure you get a high quality food? It is VERY dangerous for dogs this size to be on poor food. Stay away from:

Ol Roy
Iam
Pedigree
Purina
SCIENCE DIET
Alpo

Or anything else at walmart or the grocery store, and please buy:

Innova
Wellness
Canidae
Solid Gold
Eagle Pack
Blue Buffalo

or another high quality food. You will avoid so many HUGE vet bills!! :-)

Make sure you have the dedication to train and exercise a dog of this size, boredom can lead to destruction.
Lastly, PLEASE buy from a reputable breeder! With large dogs, health testing is so important, and it will keep you from having to put your dog down in a year.

What should you have for a puppy when you first get it?

Kate P

I am getting a German Shephard/Husky cross dog who is 7 weeks old. She will be a big dog in the end as well.

Answer
Vet, premium quality food, crate, bed, food bowl, water bowl, collar, leash, 25 foot lead for safe play, treats for training, Natures Miracle (an enzyme cleaner) & toys.

Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. The first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck.

what pain meds can i give my dog for a hurt leg?

Amanda Har

my Vizsla jumped up to grab a frisbee from our bradford pear tree and landed on a steel bucket (bobcat) and continued to play and is now hurting WHAT DO WE DO?

Answer
Make sure there's no broken skin nor torn nails etc.
Cage rest your dog for the rest of the weekend, and only walk on a leash outside to potty and right back in. If your dog will sit quietly without being in a crate, then ok to leave out with the family. No playing, no running, no leaping, no frisbee, no playing with other dogs. Rest.

If your dog stops using a leg, carrying it, then I would go to an emergency vet. If just sore, then it can probably wait until Monday. If your dog gets worse and worse, need to see a vet before Monday.

Do NOT give your dog human meds!!!!! They can cause stomach ulcer, and then you'll have your dog vomiting blood, in addition to pain from the injury. Don't even think about giving human meds.
I have seen the ulcers before from that, and it's bad.

Can you tell me more about this breed called Vizsla?

*l*

Please tell me more about this breed like how much you feed him and ....

Answer
My major concerns would be:
Providing enough exercise and mental stimulation. Vizslas MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored Vizslas are famous for chewing through drywall, ripping the stuffing out of sofas, and turning your yard into a moonscape of giant craters.

If you simply want a pet for your family, and don't have the time or inclination to take your dog running or hiking or biking, or to get involved in hunting, or advanced obedience, or tracking, or agility (obstacle course), or a similar canine activity, I do not recommend this breed. Trying to suppress their "hardwired" desire to run and work, without providing alternate outlets for their high energy level, can be difficult.

Bounciness. Young Vizslas (up to about two years old) romp and jump with great vigor, and things can go flying, including people.

If you have small children, or if you or anyone who lives with you is elderly or infirm, I do not recommend Vizsla puppies. The temptation to bounce is just too strong in many young Vizslas.

Separation anxiety. More than most other breeds, Vizslas need a great deal of companionship and do not like being left alone for more than a few hours. They tend to express their unhappiness through destructive chewing and barking. If you work all day, this is not the breed for you.

Providing enough socialization. Vizslas need extensive exposure to people and to unusual sights and sounds. Otherwise their natural caution can become shyness or suspiciousness, which are difficult to live with.

Mind of their own. Vizslas are not Golden Retrievers. The best Vizslas are versatile working dogs, capable of learning a great deal, but they have an independent mind of their own, can be stubborn, and are easily distracted by exciting sights, scents, and sounds. You must show them, through absolute consistency and great patience, that you mean what you say and that they must pay attention to you.

Shedding. For such a shorthaired dog, Vizslas shed more than you might think. Their short coarse hairs come off on your hands when you pet them, and stick tenaciously to your clothing, upholstery, and carpeting.

Housebreaking. The pointing breeds can be a bit slow to pick this up. Expect several months of consistent crate training.

Health problems. Seizures and epilepsy are major problems, along with hip and eye disorders, bleeding disorders, skin diseases, and cancer

We're flying USA 3000, from Tampa to Detroit, in about 3 weeks. The "Crate Mate" thing is supposedly made of heavy duty backpack like material that bolts to the dogs crate, it holds all paperwork required to fly, and spare water and food, in case of any problems. I read about it on this website: http://www.bcrescue.org/flying.html...

Call your pet store and find out if they have it. Look it up on the internet, I'm sure you can buy one from an online store.

During World War II, African American servicemen served in segregated units. true or false?

Answer
when the US army arrived in London they Unpacked Crates and took out Signage to put on the Outside of all the Buildings allocated the the US Military

""""" Whites Only Coloreds around the Back """""" we said look they cannot spell

Churchill and the British High command Complained but FDR being a Racist said it was Good For Moral Yes only the Whites

the Coloureds arrived later and Lived On separate Bases

and when the Coloured Mustang Squadrons arrived they were on separate Bases

In France African American troops Liberated a Town in France from the Nazis

they returned for some R & R and were Denied access until the white Major in charge said we took this town from the Nazis i think we can take it back from from you Green troops the African Americans enjoyed their R & R

there were signs on British Pubs No Dogs and Irish and one Publican Put up his Own Sign

No Dogs and Irish

Regulars and Coloreds Only are Welcome

we Found the African Americans Cleaner Better Spoken Better Mannered than the White Americans

and Most Of My Family were appalled that the USA had come to Fight the worlds Biggest Racist yet they Carried their racism all the way to Berlin

after the USA went Home My Family used the American Racist Signs as Fire wood

During the World War II, African-American enlistment was at an all time high, with more than 1 million serving in the armed forces. However, the U.S. military was still heavily segregated. The air force and the marines had no blacks enlisted in their ranks, and the navy only accepted blacks as cooks and waiters. The army had only five African-American officers.

In addition, no African-American would receive the Medal of Honor during the war, and their tasks in the war were largely reserved to noncombat units.

Black soldiers were Ordered to give up their seats in trains to the Nazi prisoners of war

Eisenhower ordered all Black and Coloured troops to be placed at least 50 miles Outside Paris During the Paris Liberation March to show this was a White Victory

the British and French refused and of Course the Jew Eisnehower got his own way

and when we organized the Liberation March through Paris he ordered all Non whites to be positioned 50 miles from Paris and in His words we the USA will show the World this was a White Victory

Due to American pressure for a white-only liberation force, black French troops were excluded from the triumphal return to Paris on the 25th

Papers unearthed by the BBC reveal that American commanders ensured that the liberation of Paris on 25 August 1944 was seen as a "whites only" victory.

Many who fought Nazi Germany during World War II did so to defeat the vicious racism that left millions of Jews dead.

Yet the BBC's Document programme has seen evidence that black colonial soldiers - who made up around two-thirds of Free French forces - were deliberately removed from the unit that led the Allied advance into the French capital.

By the time France fell in June 1940, 17,000 of its black, mainly West African colonial troops, known as the Tirailleurs Senegalais, lay dead.

Many of them were simply shot where they stood soon after surrendering to German troops who often regarded them as sub-human savages.

Their chance for revenge came in August 1944 as Allied troops prepared to retake Paris. But despite their overwhelming numbers, they were not to get it.

'More desirable'

The leader of the Free French forces, Charles de Gaulle, made it clear that he wanted his Frenchmen to lead the liberation of Paris.

I have told Colonel de Chevene that his chances of getting what he wants will be vastly improved if he can produce a white infantry division
General Frederick Morgan

Allied High Command agreed, but only on one condition: De Gaulle's division must not contain any black soldiers.

In January 1944 Eisenhower's Chief of Staff, Major General Walter Bedell Smith, was to write in a memo stamped, "confidential": "It is more desirable that the division mentioned above consist of white personnel.

"This would indicate the Second Armoured Division, which with only one fourth native personnel, is the only French division operationally available that could be made one hundred percent white."

At the time America segregated its own troops along racial lines and did not allow black GIs to fight alongside their white comrades until the late stages of the war.

Eisenhower Ordered the Bulk of African Americans back to the USA before the Bulk of American Forces to ensure they would Miss out on the Victory Marches In American Cities

and they made this arrogant Racist Adulterer a President of a so called Christian Country

Answer
Try your local shelters or breed rescues. If you feel you must use a breeder, find a reputable one.

Once you have decided on the breed you are looking for, visit the internet and find the NATIONAL BREED CLUB for your breed. Review all the information about the breed and find the web pages or phone contacts of breeders that are listed there. National breed clubs almost always have certain standards and ethics quides for any breeders which are listed on their pages.
Step2
Prepare a questionnaire of questions you want to ask the breeder. This is a good one:
What health guarantees do you have?
Can you give me a vet reference?
Can I visit your kennel and if so, when?
How long have you been breeding?
Do you enter your own dogs in AKC events?
Can you send me a sample copy of your contract?
Do you sell your litters to pet stores or brokers?
(there is NO responsible breeder that will sell to a broker or a pet store, since it is too difficult to follow through on who is getting your puppy!!)
The LAST question should be "how much do your puppies cost?" but it is of course an important question
Step3
Do make plans to visit the kennel and while there check the following things:
Are the dogs healthy and happy?
Does the kennel owner know each one by name?
Do the dogs have places to run outside their pens?
Are the pens clean and roomy?
(even if the home is a mess or in an uproar and not very neat, the kennels should be clean and all dogs should have food and fresh water available)
Is the whelping area in the house?
(puppies should be raised INSIDE a home for at least the first four weeks in order to get all the necessary social and physical attention needed in the first few weeks)
Do the sire and the dam act friendly and sociable?
(sometimes the STUD dog may not be available, the female may have been shipped elsewhere for breeding)

Any opinions on Dog Boarding for Christmas in San Jose, CA?

Can't seem to find a good one with room for x-mas..

Answer
You might try Kalauh Kennels (408-245-1234) on Mathilda in Sunnyvale OR Petsmart PetsHotel (408-920-0472) near SJC airport. I don't know that either of them will have any openings since xmas is already less than 3 weeks away, but at least you could try.

We regularly take our dog to Kalauh and they are always great. Our dog has not stayed overnight at the PetsHotel since it is fairly new, but the facility looked really nice (they even show movies to the dogs!).
