Answer
Can you be more specific? Do you mean Edmonton UK or US or Canada? If you mean the UK you need to search the kennels but a home and back-ground check will be carried out before you're allowed a dog or pup. If your UK side ring Battersea Dogs Home, go and visit, talk to the kennel maids, see the Alsations, choose one and arrange a home visit. Dogs there cost around £85 - £100 and you'll have to sign a document that allows random home checks whenever they decide to do one! They could turn up whilst you're eating your break-fast or dinner - you'll never know but the reason is because they need to know their pup's and dog's are going to be very well cared for! Best of luck in your search, i hope you find what your looking for.

does anyone know if there is any buses that will allow puppies on the bus in canada? ?

supladita

i am going to edmonton in 3weeks and yet i can not find a bus that will allow our puppy on the bus knowing that it will be in it's kennel. should i just sneak it in or will they kick me off the bus if i do? or do i have to pay a penalty? if not does anyone know how much for a pet mobile to transport my puppy from toronto ontario to edmonton?

Answer
I think you'de have to look at Air Canada Cargo for shipping a dog. Buses do cargo runs, but I wouldn't trust a pet in cargo for that long since no one will probably walk or feed it during the time, and cargo isn't always shipped on the same bus you would travel on. At least by plane it's only a few hours in a kennel rather than a few days.

If that doesn't work, you may have to explore the train (Via Rail) or driving yourself.

How can I train my dog to have "accidents" in a more desirable place>?

My indoor dog is 3.5 years old and she is great. She rarely has accidents in the house. While I fully expect accidents, I need to know how to train her to use a certain place in the house for those accidents. I am patient and I know this takes time, I'm simply looking for technique advice.

Answer
I use a special treats as a reward (one that he normally doesn't get)... the dog only gets it when he/she goes OUTSIDE.

I start out by taking the dog outside, and saying "go pee" or "go poop" over and over. When the dog goes, then I carry on like I the Publishers Clearing House Prize Van just pulled in to my driveway!!!! And, I give the treat right there on the spot!

It's important that you pay very close attention to the dog. Keeping it leashing inside with her will help with this. If you can't be right there, then you should crate the dog.

You should take the dog out frequently. If you doesn't know what times he/she generally needs to potty, then keeping a log might help.

How much would it cost to ship an adult 65 pound dog?

foxfirefly

I am giving away my 2 year old Australian Cattle dog to a woman who lives in Arkansas and I am in California. Does anyone know an estimate of how much it would cost to ship the dog to her? And would it even be safe for the dog because she's so big? I know of people shipping puppies to people and that costing around $200 but has anyone ever tried to ship a bigger dog?
Thanks for the help in advance.
I have to give my dog away because she keeps getting out of our yard, no matter what we do, we can't seem to keep her inside our yard. We are giving her to a person who owns a farm where the dog will have more room and more to do. I don't want to give her up but I don't want anything bad to happen to her since she keeps getting loose.

Answer
Call Continental Airlines 800.575.3335 and press #8 and someone can help you. Continental has a wonderful pet shipping service. The dogs are in a climate and pressure controlled cabin with the same climate and pressure as people; they are safely in the crate you provide, which is then put in an appropriate sized bin and strapped in. They have trained personnel. They are never left out on the runway. They are in Pet Cargo (heated or cooled, depending on the season); they go to the plane by van; they are brought inside for layover or change of plane by van.

I've shipped many, many puppies and birds with Continental and have never had anything but a wonderful experience. In fact, a parrot missed its connecting flight and they called me to tell me.

I know the price for up to 50 pounds is right at $200, but don't know the price for over 50 pounds. They do require that the dog has been seen by a vet and has a Health Certificate and, if over 4 months, a rabies shot.

Good luck!

how to keep an energetic dog entertained and busy when not home?

i live with a 2 year old male husky dog who seems to have unlimited energy and giant sized stamina. Regardless of how much i play him or take him out for physical activity, he never tires out. In fact i will get tired faster than he will.

And as a result he is often restless and very playful.

When i go to work he is left alone at home all day with sufficient food and water. How to keep him entertained and busy when he's alone for several hours a day?

Answer
Wow--that's a tough one. Here's the deal: good sled dogs run up to 100 miles a day...in the snow...pulling a sled. That's the kind of breed you have. So unlike most who complain about this issue, your problem really is about the breed rather than an owner that expects a dog to just lay there all day and play fetch for 10 minutes.

The short answer is that there is nothing you can do that is going to solve the problem if your dog is crated for 8-9 hours during the day. Putting the dog outside will work for about 1 hour and then he'll start trying to dig under the fence or begin obsessing about birds or passing sounds (which will turn him into a barking maniac--not good). Turning on the TV will quickly become a nonfactor--it will become background noise. Putting dog entertainment CD's or DVD's on is a joke. A good bone or rawhide....well, if your dog is like I suspect he is, he probably finishes off a good rawhide in 30 minutes or less.

You've got a couple of options, none of them easy and none of them free. They all start with you being willing to give your sled dog a good workout in the morning and evening. Instead of reading the paper when you get up in the, put on some headphones, listen to the radio and take a 20-30 minute run with your husky. And plan on taking a 30 minute walk every evening. If you want variety, than get some roller blades. Also try throwing a ball for 10 minutes in the evening as well.

Also, these are smart dogs so you don't just want to push them physically (by going running or a long walk) but also do tricks with them--challenge him mentally.

1. Hire a dog walker. Have someone come to your house mid-day to walk your husky every weekday. It will cost you something like $10-25 a day. But for a 30 minute walk, it will get your dog out of his crate and take the edge off him when you get home.

2. Put him in doggie daycare. Not some place where he's crated all day with 1-2 short bathroom breaks. But one that has space where he's let out to play with other dogs for an hour or so each day. Or look for someone else who has a dog of similar size that your husky plays with well. Offer a trade: if the neighbor will let you keep your husky at their house during the day (so the two dogs can interact and he can be out of his crate most of the day) and maybe 1 outdoor potty break, you'll walk both dogs together for 30-45 minutes after work each day and then take them both to the park to run around on the weekend.

3. Sign him up for a couple of classes. If you can't do the dog walker or doggie daycare, then you need to enroll in 2-3 classes or performance activities during the week. These become things for your dog to look forward to. They get "this is thursday, it's my flyball class" or "this is saturday, time for weight pull." It will improve your bond with your dog, provide physical and mental stimulation for him but also gives him something to look forward to. Once you get into a routine, it makes it easier for him to handle the long day in his crate.

4. Join dog performance activities (agility, weight pull) that you do on weekends. This probably goes in tandem with the idea of classes (because you can't compete effectively without taking a class).

5. Push the dog harder. Get a dog backpack and load it down with water bottles so the dog is carrying more weight. Get some instruction first but then buy a harness and have your dog pull weights on your own. If it snows in your neck of the woods, have him pull you on a sled. The idea is--make the dog work harder. For indoors, there are dog treadmills. They're expensive and not all dogs love them. And you can't just put a dog on and forget him--it requires surveillance. None of these activities work unless you're willing to get up early and push the dog hard in the morning before you head to work.

What is the best way to train a dog not to go potty in the house?

Q. Well we have had our dog for about a month and a half and sometimes she likes to go potty on the floor and we don't know why. She doesn't even go to the door if she has to go. Please HELP me if you can!!!

Answer
You need to watch her for signals, like sniffing around or whining, and House-train her as if she were a puppy. It is not uncommon for a dog to "foget" her house-training in a new house, but if she was previously trained, the re-training will take very quickly.

House Training
Don't use ammonia to clean up any messes, because it smells like urine to the dog. Use vinegar or the special pet stain cleaners, instead.

1. Watch her very carefully when you are home and take her outside after she drinks, eats, or sniffs around. Keep her outside for 5 minutes, then come back in.... but keep careful watch. Always take her to the exact same spot outside for her toilet, and clean up solid waste every few days.

2. When you can't watch her, put her in a crate. It is only cruel, if you keep her in the crate all the time. You want to try to let her out about every four hours, but she is old enough that she can handle 8 hours, if you are diligent in walking her before and after meals, and before and after leaving for work/school.

3. If you don't use a crate, then confine her in a room, like the bathroom or kitchen that you can cover with newspaper.

4. Put food, water, toys, and bedding in one corner. When you come back after a few hours, take her outside for a walk. Then clean up soiled newspaper, clean the floor underneath with vinegar, and save a small piece for the smell. Place some clean newspaper in another corner of the room, away from her food, and place the smelly piece of newspaper in the corner. Keep newspaper on the rest of the floor.

5. The next day she should have tried to go to the bathroom close to the smelly corner. Repeat the process from above, clean the floor, use new paper, place a new smelly piece of paper in the corner opposite her food.

You are trying to teach her where her toilet is by placing a large blinking sign that says bathroom. Since your dog can't read, you are using a small piece of paper for the same purpose. Your dog has a good sense of smell, so the smelly paper doesn't have to be very large or disgusting. Just a few inches.

6. Keep doing this for a few days, until your dog goes to the bathroom consistently in the same 5' x 5' area. If you are patient and loving, then she may learn to go in an area less than 2' x 2' in less than 4 days, but don't push it.

7. If things are on track after 5 or 6 days, then remove all of the paper, except a 5' x 5' area in the corner, with a small smelly piece of paper.

8. Advanced: If she is a small dog, then you might slowly reduce the area to about 1' x 1', then you can train her to use a kitty litter box inside... but that may be pushing things.

9. When she is consistent, then remove all the paper, and move the smelly piece of paper to the outside to show her where her bathroom is. She may have a few accidents, so try to understand what happened and why she had the accident.
But this method should work for most puppies and dogs.

10. Things to remember:
A. You can remove the paper when you are home and watching her. You only need the paper during the training period of about two weeks, and only when no one is home to watch her, while she is confined in the kitchen/bathroom.
B. Always clean up the floor under any mess or mistake with lots of vinegar to remove the smell.
C. Remember that the smell to a dog is like a large, red, blinking sign to people.
D. Always get rid of soiled newspaper, except for a tiny piece with smell. Replace the soiled newspaper with clean newspaper for the first few days.

Also, walk her, pet her, and talk to her softly... so that she will learn that she has a loving home.

HI im going to be gone in a month or to for 2 weeks and more and i need some on to Babbie sit my guinea pig.Is there some on in Calgary that can baby sit my guinea pig!1must be a experience's guinea pig sitter!
I live in Calgary Alberta Canada

Answer
Talk to your local pet shops, expecially any privately owned ones (ie, not corporations like petsmart, petland, or petco). Also try boarding kennels. I used to work for a pet store that boarded birds, but also boarded a customer's 2 g. pigs from time to time. The kennel I now work at mainly boards dogs, but sometimes will do cats as well, and we even got a rabbit yesterday that we'll be watching for the weekend.

Also, sometimes kennels and pet stores will know of someone you can contact about boarding your pig if they can't. Another possibility is try an internet search (yellowpages.com would be a good place to start) for "pet sitting" in your area.

How do I get my dog flea free?

dog crates k9 on ... Articles Dogs & Kids Preventing Dog Bites in Children

Jamie

My dog got fleas about three months ago. I bought bath soap that was supposed to get rid of fleas along with advantage medication. I know you're supposed to put the medicine on once a month but I've been doing it every three weeks and it still hasn't helped! People keep saying I have fleas in the carpet, but my house doesn't have carpet. What can I do to get rid of them?

Answer
Bathe your dog again, give him a Capstar and treat him with K9 Advantix II. This is more effective than the Advantage. Crate your dog somewhere flea-free like the garage or a friend's house while you tackle the house. Fleas can live in your couches, mattress, curtains and clothes. Treating your pet just isn't enough. You need to thoroughly vacuum everything and wash all your bedding, curtains, pillows and clothes that have been lying around. Also wash your dog's bed. Once you have everything thoroughly washed and vacuumed set off a flea bomb, then re-vacuum everything again.

Make sure to keep your house clean by vacuuming everything at least a few times a week, wash your pet's bed frequently, change your sheets on a regular basis and reapply the spot-on treatment on your dog every 20-30 days.

I know of a helpful blog that covers flea removal more in detail that would probably be helpful to you. I'll post a link to it in the source box.

How do I keep my dog comfortable during a storm?

Torchwood-

One of my dogs is terrified of storms, she has been ever since she was a puppy. She is about 7 now and is a medium sized mixed breed dog. Whenever storm come about I usually try to ignore the negative behavior or hold her wrapped up (you know the comforting pressure thing). She gets hot during storms and normally does not want to stay still or be wrapped up. Recently she has taken to hiding under my bed since I often ignore her behavior during night time storms. My question is, What can I do to help relieve her stress when I'm not here? Here separation anxiety isn't bad any more since she has another dog as a friend so I'm mainly worried about her during storms. In August I'm going off to a college that is five hour away. Obviously I'm not going to be here to take care of her and my parents don't understand that my dog is truly scared during storms. When I'm gone the dogs won't be able to get in my room (as my other dog steals things) and my parents do not allow pets in their room. I'm trying to figure out if I should use a crate or something for her to have as a safe spot? I figure I can I can tuck something behind the couch near my bedroom door Any ideas on how to set up a safe spot for her and how to get her to recognize it as that are greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Disney World - Stay In Park Or Out Of Park With 3 Kids And Dog?

best friends dog kennel disney on Cartoon Dog Pictures To Print
best friends dog kennel disney image

Lydia

My husband and I are overwhelmed with all the options of a WDW Vacation. We plan on going to the parks about 7 days of our visit. 5 people total and a dog. Are the kennels at the parks good? Or would we be better off getting a hotel out of the park that is pet friendly? There are so many pros and cons to both of these options I can't decide which to choose.
Leaving the dog home is NOT an option! I want the best for kids and dog.
Dog HAS to come with us. He is treated as a family member. We don't have anyone else to care for him anyway. If you have used the kennels at the parks please let me know how well your pet did and how you felt about the kennel experience.
This is going to be a one time Disney experience for my children so I want the best for ALL.

Answer
Normally I always recommend staying onsite at Disney. It is the best way to experience Disney, especially if this is a once in a lifetime trip. However, Disney does not allow dogs at their resorts (except for service animals). The only option you would have with Disney is Fort Wilderness Campgrounds, not sure if you are wanting to camp for the vacation, but that would be the only place you can bring your dog.

If you really want to stay somewhere nice that will allow pets and make for a really nice vacaton, I would recommend staying at one of the Universal Resorts. They are a little higher in cost then most of the Disney resorts, but very nice and worth the cost. I believe they charge a $25 fee to allow pets.

The other option is going to be offsite. If you choose to go this way, just be sure to do a lot of research. Many of the hotels offsite are not in the best condition. When they allow pets, the overall quality can be decreased, as many of them don't clean very well.

Just be sure that you find out all requirements that you need. You will likely need proof of vaccinations, and a paper from your vet stating that the pooch is healthy. You definitely don't want to get there and find out that you are missing something.

I personally have not taken my pets with me on vacation. One is pretty sensitive to heat, the other has allergies and things like that, and I have several pets, so it would be difficult to take them with me. Also, I've always been a little concerned how well the rooms are cleaned so that I know my dog is not going to catch anything from staying there. I've had some friends stay in pet-friendly rooms that they were not very satisfied with the quality. So, I leave my pets at home with their regular care-takers and things so I know they are well taken care of.

Now, as far as kennels, again, I've not used them. However, the people I've talked to that have has been very happy. I believe that Disney does require you come by a few times a day to walk your dog and play with them a little bit. So, you will have to schedule that into your day. I will include a link with some reviews of the kennels for you to look over.

I hope this helps!

does orlando studios allow pets?

Melody

is there some sort of dog boarding area? how much?

Answer
What is this "Orlando Studios" that you speak of? Do you mean Disney's Hollywood Studios? Or Universal Studios Orlando?

Both Universal and Disney have provisions for those who wish to board pets.

Universal Studios has a daytime kennel for cats and dogs only, and it is by a first-come, first-served basis. You must have proof of vaccinations, and you are able to leave your animals there from 8 AM to 3 AM. The kennel is locked after 2 ours after the last Universal park is closed, but you can reach them by telephone.

Further info: https://www.universalorlando.com/Resort-Information/Theme-Park-Services.aspx#kennel

Disney also has "Best Friends Pet Care" kennels available. Reservations are strongly encouraged to ensure you have room for your animal.

Disney's official info: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-services/best-friends-pet-care/

Disney resort guests have a base rate of $34 for an Indoor Suite, and you can pay up to $15 for a playgroup option, $4 for an ice cream break, $8 for a walk/explore option, etc.

How do I house break the poor thing...?

chi_girl20

I'm getting a 6 month old Norfolk Terrier from a friend, the dog was raised outside and never comes in the house. When I bring it home it will be more of an inside dog. How do I house break the dog? Any suggestions will help. I go to work everyday, adn it will most likely stay in it's crate while i'm gone, how do I transition it so it's not such a shock, as it's used to roaming free?

Answer
That's going to be tuff. For my dogs, I have 3, it was all about positive reinforcement. I would watch them like a hawk, and when they would show signs of needing to go potty (ie: sniffing around in a circle, pawing at the ground after a little bit you can tell when they need to go) I would take them outside immediatley. I also put them on a schedule, every morning and when I get home from work about the same time I let them outside to go potty and when they do they would get a treat and LOTS of praise. Now when they go potty inside I would put their snout very close to it and tell them it's bad in a stern voice and give them a spanking on the butt. Not too hard or anything, it usually doesn't take much for them to get the point. After a few weeks of continuously doing that they got it. None of them have ever had formal obedience training and now they are much older and NEVER have accidents in the house. It's certainly not easy. I hope this helps.

How can I get my dog to pee outside again ?

Kayleigh

I have recently moved into my forst house and took my dog, Monty with me. He's a 3 year old border collie amd fully house trained. The first night he was here he weed and pooed in the yard but since then hes deliberately holding it in! He refuses to do his business outside and eventually ends up caught short and goes inside.
Its not a medical problem because when I take him back to my grandmas (where we used to live) he goes to the toilet as normal ! I think its psychological but how do I get him out of this habit ? I've tried putting his mess outside where I want him to go but this has no effect :(
please help !!

Answer
In response to the above question, do not leave your dog outside all night. Throughout the day constanly take him outside. Make it like he's a puppy again. Also, get a crate (you can get a cheap one on craigslist). Make sure it's just big enough for him to stand and turn around. He wont want to go to the bathroom while he's in a crate. Put him in there if you're not home and at night. He will just take some time to get used to his new enviroment.

Importing a dog into Dubai?

Salman

I am interested in importing a dog into Dubai.
Most preferably a golden retriever. Can someone please provide some information on how to go about it and the approximate cost of the whole procedure including airline tickets as well
P.s I am planning to import a dog from India

Answer
I can't vouch for the accuracy of this, but it comes from a book called Globe trotting pets, which I got to help me plan travel with my dog. This is information about importing to the UAE (Abu Dhabi, Dubai etc.)

It's likely to be very expensive. His flight costs were about the same as a cheap human ticket price for the same flight.
You have to make sure that the crate is IATA standard. (See the link in sources) or it's likely the dog wont be able to travel.

You will need import permits from the ministry of agriculture and fisheries (Link below - it's annoyingly not working, you'll have to look this up your self) if you aren't traveling with them, and you'll still need prior permission from them even if you are traveling with the pet checked as 'baggage' on the same flight, not shipped as cargo.

You will need a current International Health Certificate to import the dog regardless.

Please, Dog teeth extraction, putting him down or any other immidiate options?

Hi there! I have a dog, and I love him, he lives in my parents' house wher my sister and her kids stays too. My dog is an aggressive one, he snaps at everybody except me, recently, he has bitten one of my nephews who was just visiting. It left 2 deep wounds. I thought neutering him would improve his behavior, but apparently, it did not, or just not yet. I've already bought a book about dog training, but still, I haven't used the whole thing on him yet, I barely have time to do it because I work in the city, and I stay there for the weekdays while spending only the weekends in my parents'. I need and immidiate action for my family's safety, should i consider pulling off his canines rather than putting him down?
Hi sunshine, Ok, just to correct my question, It is my family's dog, I just say it is mine becoz it obviously loves noone but me. I am only talking about the canine teeth not all, just the four sharp ones.. tnx for the answer
Hi everyone, tnx a lot for ur answers, but in the Philippines, putting a dog in a shelter is like killing him. Shelters here are the most dangerous things for them, they let them get sick, w/out proper food and medications, besides the fact he is a mongrel..
Hi liz m, of course i wouldn't do it myself, nobody in his right mind would, i suppose. Tnx fishmom, ur the best!!

Answer
No, don't pull all his teeth. Your family needs to manage the dog to keep the teeth off other people. That means put the dog away when people are visiting. There is no excuse to have children get bitten when adults KNOW that this dog bites. Get a basket muzzle for him, crate him in another room, etc. etc. He should NOT be loose ever around anybody again. Period. He doesn't bite with his testicles, so just neutering him would do no good.

You don't live there, so the responsibility falls to your parents here. They need to manage him to keep his teeth off people, or talk to the vet about euthanasia. It's not responsible to rehome dogs that bite, especially if it has bitten someone badly like this. If your parents want to hire a trainer, here's an option for them (if they don't work with aggressive dogs, they'll be able to refer you):

I live in a similar type of area in the midwestern US and I know for certain the market for pet boarding is quite limited when you're rural AND that far from a metro area. (looked into it myself)

It goes without saying that the 800-resident town will not sustain your business by itself; so you are going to need to pull most of your clientele from the city area. Whether or not you can do it depends partly on how big the "big city" is....in my state, the biggest metro area is still under 230,000 people, which would be considered a small-to-medium city in some other states. The smaller the population, the more limited your market is going to be anyway. If you have a metro area of over a half-million to a million people or more, AND there aren't enough boarding kennels in the area to cover existing demand, you might have better luck. It all depends on specifics. Market research is a must.

Most likely there is already more than one boarding facility in or near the city- automatically giving the "competition" a huge advantage. All things being more or less equal- price, facilities, services, etc....potential clients are going to lean towards what's most convenient. Unless you can offer a service that is unique and/or far superior to the city business in some way AND you can do it at a competitive price, you are going to have a hard time convincing people to make the drive.

Holidays might be the only time you'd see decent business- people are far more likely to make the drive when they're desperate & everything in the city is booked up already. But you can't pay the bills off of a few holiday weekends a year.

If you offer a variety of services- for instance, grooming, training, daycare AND boarding, you might do better than if you did boarding only. Like I said, any way that you can make your business stand out- try and offer a service that is not only unique but also in high demand. Perhaps the lack of zoning restrictions in a rural/agricultural area would enable you to do something unique with your kennel design, that the city businesses can't do? Like huge individual indoor/outdoor runs, or large communal play areas seperate from the actual kennels, where dogs get turned out for "playtime" once or twice a day as an extra service?

To give you an idea here's a similar example of a great kennel in Washington where I boarded one of my dogs in 2005- this type of setup generally requires acreage in a rural area without too many zoning laws: http://www.happytailsboardingwa.com/services.htm

Again going back to what I mentioned earlier, this kennel is in a rural area- but it's roughly an hour's drive (in traffic) from Seattle- which has over 3 million people in the metro area. There are actually a LOT of boarding & training kennels in the rural country even further away from Seattle that still get plenty of business- being "rural" yet still near a major US city is a lot different than being "rural" and an hour away from Fargo ND, for instance. Hope this helps, and good luck.

Answer
Get the Times of India/Hindustan Times sunday edition. Turn to the Classified section. Unlike America where reputable breeders usually do not like to advertise in the papers, Reputable Indian breeders do advertise in the papers. Also contact the IKC or the INKC (Indian Kennel Club or Indian National Kennel Club)- and they will refer you to breeders.

Best, is go to Blue Cross. They have wonderful dogs. They are rescues and by giving them a home, you will be saving their lives and that is very good Karma.

As for the strange people who think Indians eat dogs- you have seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom too many times. Indians are most likely to be vegetarian. If they are not- chicken and goat are the consumed meats- Very few Indians even eat the pork and beef that you most likely do. Dogs are eaten in the far east yes, but by getting your countries confused, you are displaying shocking ignorance.

I am planning a trip there(Los Angeles or Hollywood) and I would like to know good places to go.i am not interested in amusement parks.Any ideas.

Answer
There are literally hundreds of things to do here in LA. Here is my top ten list (minus the top two attractions, Disneyland and Universal Studios):

Universal City Walk is a fun place to hang out in the evening whether or not you go visit the Studio tour.

Hollywood: Hollywood Boulevard is ready for its close-up, thanks to years of urban renewal and renovation. Enjoy the Walk of Fame, Entertainment Museum, Chinese Theatre and more. You can see a lot for free. The Hollywood & Highland complex has lots of shops and restaurants, and the Kodak Theater (home of the Academy Awards). I also like the El Capitan theater, because it has been restored to its former glory.

Rodeo Drive, 90210: Packed with exclusive shops, full of gawkers. They all came to enjoy the excess. Free, unless you intend to buy something.

Venice Beach: Los Angeles kitsch and over-the-top culture at its best. Here you'll find Muscle Beach, street performers and tacky shops galore. Fun, VERY interesting, but I avoid it after dark, when it gets a little TOO interesting for my taste. And it's a short bike ride from Santa Monica Pier.

Santa Monica Beach and Pier: Great beach scene and a classic seaside amusement park, complete with antique carousel that has been in a lot of TV and movies. (The Sting and "Three's Company" come immediately to mind). After visiting the pier, you can ride a bike south a couple miles to Venice Beach.

Santa Monica Third Street Promenade - Downtown Santa Monica's shopping promenade is often the scene of movie star-sightings. Just a short walk from the Santa Monica Pier.

Sunset Boulevard: Perhaps one of the world's most famous streets, it began as a route between the stars' posh neighborhoods and the Hollywood studios. It runs from downtown to the ocean, passing through the "Sunset Strip" on its way. It makes for a fun drive. Along the way, you see a lot of different neighborhoods: Hollywood, West Hollywood, Bel Air, and Pacific Palisades. When you get to the ocean, stop at Gladstone's for Fish.

Queen Mary: Once the largest ship afloat, she's been docked in Long Beach for longer than she sailed, and her elegance never fails to impress. Free to visit. You can actually stay on board, for a price.

Farmers Market and The Grove - A new shopping complex right next to a Los Angeles landmark, The Grove and Farmers Market coexist. Enjoy a movie or shopping, and then take the trolley to the Farmers Market for lunch or dinner. It is right next to CBS, so walk across the lot to see if they are taping "The Price is Right". You might even get in.

Griffith Park - Home of the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park Observatory, Travel Town, the Greek Theatre, and Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage.

Getty Museum - The Getty's architecture is so beautiful that it keeps me fascinated. No matter whether you like their art or architecture better (or maybe you'll just enjoy the view), the Getty is sure to please. Free.

Attend a TV taping - You can get free tickets at audiencesunlimited.com, tvtix.com, or see the booth at Universal City walk. It's very interesting to see a show being taped. The most popular, by far, is the Tonight show with Jay Leno. Check the NBC web site for all the details there.

Places to eat:
In-N-Out Burger: Multiple locations, best burger in LA, ask anyone.
Pinkâs Hot Dogs: 709 N. La Brea, just north of Melrose. You might even see a celebrity. Maybe.
Tommyâs Chili Burgers: Look for the shack, an LA tradition. The original location is at Beverly & Rampart, a couple miles west of downtown.
Canterâs Deli: 419 N. Fairfax, between Beverly & Melrose. Near CBS, you might spot a celebrity.
Phillippeâs: 1001 N. Alameda. Great roast beef sandwiches. Near Union Station and Olvera Street. Watch the mustard, itâs hot.
The Pantry: Corner of Figueroa and 9th, downtown. Huge portions, they never close, (I NEVER eat there after dark), GREAT steak and eggs.

Places to Stay:
In Hollywood, I recommend the Renaissance Hotel at Hollywood and Highland, the Best Western Sunset Plaza, or the Holiday Inn Walk of Fame.
In Anaheim, I recommend the HoJo Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. If you want to splurge and make this a most memorable trip, stay at Disneyâs Grand Californian. You get the full Disney experience.
In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced.

Places to Shop:
Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica
Beverly Center, Los Angeles
Citadel Outlets, Commerce
Brea Mall, Brea
The Block at Orange, Orange
South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa
Fashion Island, Newport Beach

is there a place where my dogs can live full time and i can visit? like pet bording?

Brianna

i am going to live in an appartment in los angeles soon and sadly my two large dogs are not welcome, does anyone know of a place where my dogs can live and i can come visit? p.s. please dont tell me just to get rid of them, i wont.

Answer
Sure, your dogs can be boarded somewhere- if you let them know it's going to be very long term and you pay for it.

If you can't afford or find a kennel that will allow long term boarding, then you need to find friends or family who can take the dogs in but still allow you to see them.

How can I house break my 8 year old dog?

dog crates rspca on New York Outlet, Burberry, Crate & Barrel, Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue ...
dog crates rspca image

The Aviato

Yesterday we got an 8 year old dog from the RSPCA centre. In her previous home she had been kept in the garden all the time and when she was in the centre she was used to doing her business all over her kennel. When we came downstairs this morning we found she'd left us a present. How can we train her to do her business outside?
She's a Collie X by the way :P

Answer
Time, patience, and a crate, or somewhere she's contained at least.

She doesn't know the house-rules yet. With an 8 year old, especially a b itch, it's going to be comparatively easy and I'd bet she'll be fine in a matter of days, provided you are firm with her, set the ground rules, let her out regularly, and pick up on her habits (needs to go). Most dogs, on 2 meals a day, only need to go say 4 times (poohs that is) but if she's on new food, you may find she goes a bit loose to start with, so cut her some slack. Just take her outside and, like with a puppy, when she goes, loads of praise.

If you have a crate for her, it will help with the overnight thing.

Mine went through 6 months in quarantine. Housetrained when they went in, but obviously with an inside cubical and outside pen so they got pretty used to going as and when. But it didn't take long to sort the 'bad habits' out once they came home.

She'll be fine but I do think you have to expect this for a little while so be kind.

How can I get my dog and cat to get along?

Jessica

I have a four year old Australian terrier, and adopted an adult cat from the RSPCA in November. Although I introduced them slowly as the vet recommended, the dog still chases the cat every time he sees him. This has resulted in the cat spending the majority of his time in his room, except during the day when he spends time outside and on some nights when he sleeps with me. Of course I feel incredibly guilty about this, and am desperate for them to get along so the cat can move freely through the house at will.

What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Answer
First you need to let your dog know that he or she isnt the boss, and has no buisness telling the cat what to do. YOU are the boss.

You can get a squirt bottle ( fill it with water this wont hurt her) and watch as the dog starts to chase or show too much intrest in the cat, squirt the dog saying NO KITTYS quickly and firmly. If after trying this a few times doesnt work you can put a leash on the dog, just let her drag it around the house and if she trys to chase the cat step on the leash or tug it quickly and firmly with your hand and say NO KITTYS. After doing this for a while she will learn that it is a bad thing to chase the kitty.
If you have a plastic crate you could put in the room, whenever she chases the cat tell her NO NO BAD DOG, NO KITTYS. Then as a timeout she has to go in her crate and go get the cat so she can see him with you and talk to him and pet him and when you look at her say BAD DOG NO KITTYS. She will then learn that this behavior gets her locked up and she doesnt want that. When you let your dog chase the cat away shes getting when she wants with no punishment so she doesnt see this as bad behavior.

After youve worked with her for a while you should be able to just verbally correct her by saying NO KITTYS whenever she shows intrest.

I MIGHT be getting my first dog soon, need some help?

We are TALKING about getting a dog. So i need your help with figuring out costs for a medium/large breed dog. I live in an apartment that requires a $400 pet deposit and $15 a month for your pets rent. Adoption fee should be around $100-150. I work at a vet clinic, so i get a 50% discount on Everything plus free exams. I figure $50 for vaccines and around $100 for neuter if niether are already done. $60 for year round heartgard. These are based on prices at my clinic with my discount. A dog license is $7. Things that i don't know prices for are food bowls, collar and leash, toys, and crate. Also, cost for obedience training. And food cost per month. Is there any other costs i am missing? Is there any other good advice you can give me about owning a dog? I have done a lot of research, and i work with dogs everyday. But i want to make sure i do what is best for my dog. We are not posotive yet if we are getting one, I just want to be prepared. We plan to adopt an adult dog.
i do plan to adopt from my local humane society where i used to volunteer. I don't have an overly busy schedule, my boyfriend and i both work, but we have weekends off, and we work different hours, so the dog would not be home for long periods of time. I just prefer adult dogs to puppies. Though we live in an apartment, i do want a medium/large sized dog, we will be taking him for walks at LEAST once daily, but probably also in the evening. And there will be plenty of play time inside. thank you for any help.

Answer
I like the convenience of one-stop shopping. If you like that, I'd recommend PetSmart because they are a large store with better prices overall and a large inventory of supplies to choose from, varying in price. Also, depending on your dogs needs, the type of collar, leash or "Easy Walk" you might get can vary.
PetSmart has an excellent food that is a bit cheaper than other premium foods (and better than many of the premium foods)- I'd recommend their Authority Harvest Baked. That would cost you about 30 dollars a month. I feed my dogs Nature's Recipe because one has a sensitive stomach. I add Pet Botanics Lamb Log and Beef Log sliced and cubed- and mix it in their food.
Treats are something that I spend about 20 dollars a month for three dogs.
Toys: Big stores have big sales. Some essentials are objects for chewing like a Kong, large Nylabones, hard biscuits. Your initial expense will of course be quite a bit more if you get everything at once.
Dogs are often destructive with dog beds or they tear easily or wear out soon. What I do for my dogs is fold a king sized comforter two times and it makes a comfortable bed they can arrange as they like and it is easily washable. I get them from a store like Family Dollar or WalMart on sale and for less than 25 dollars you can have a great bed.
PetSmart offers beginner obedience classes for a reasonable price. Basically your dog will get to socialize and learn the basics like sit, down, stay, come, etc. If you get an adult dog he or she will likely know a lot of that already but the socialization would be good. Daily walks outside of their yard or house is important.
Many places have great dog parks now that are free. My city has at least four that I know of, funded by the city.
For food and water bowls I like the stainless steel ones and you can get a stand which holds two bowls and is adjustable to height. I can't remember how much that was, but it was well worth the purchase. Another thing I have is an air tight container to store their food in to eliminate the bug factor and smell.

Good discount pet store?

Megan Stof

Looking for dog items. Crates, carriers, clothes, dog beds, leashes, collars. Lower priced than petsmart, ect.

No online stores.

Thanks,
Megan
I live in Pittsburgh, PA, if that helps

Answer
Walmart has a limited selection in their stores but you can order online from them and have them ship to the store. It is called site to store. This works well for larger items such as crates and carriers that would cost a lot to ship. Site to Store shipping at Walmart is free and they usually can have the item there in a few days. You can also return it to your local Walmart if you are not satisfied. We use Petedge for our online orders and they are less expensive and have quality products. You other options are to look for sale prices at Petsmart and Petco.

I have two cats and my boyfriend has a dog. We would live together but the dog (a large yorkie) just wants to chase and try to bite the cats.

Answer
Remember, all dogs and cats have the same basic instincts. Some are rather difficult to train. Just like potty training it will take some time and alot of patience. Try the crate training/water bottle method I use for most of my animals. Give them time facing each other in their own crates several minutes each day increasing several minutes every other day. Then when they are together and the dog chases the cat use a higher powered squirt bottle or gun and squirt the animal in the face telling it "no" at the same time. After a while it will equate the word "no" with the squirt and mind when you just speak the word. All the while you are still reinforcing positive behavior among them by keeping them in their own cages in close proximatey to each other. It is much like having to seperate restless or sqabbling siblings. They will grow on each other in time.
Also remember, however, that Yorkies were bred to hunt and catch small animals so chasing the cat is a sport to them and keeps them healthy. You may have to choose eventually because genetically they are not supposed to like cats. I have seen them get along, but each case of course could be different.

What are some good tricks to teach Yorkies?

Jessika

I'm getting a baby yorkie puppy soon ( as you can see in my profile ). I want to know some good tricks for it. Escpically ways to potty train it. Not crate training though. I wouldn't like if someone put me in a cage and I will not make my little puppy feel like she is in jail. Thanks!

I reconsidered about crate training...
Just post some other ways too. Also post how to crate train it. Also post HOW TO do the tricks! Lol.
Thanks,

Answer
yorkies are extremely stubborn when it comes to potty training you might want to reconsider crate training. it's only to help regulate their small bladders because it goes against a dog's nature to pee where they sleep.

I got my yorkie at 14 wks so he didn't need to go out as much as younger puppies. i crate trained my yorkie and even still it was hard at first but now he uses it like a little den and it's only whenever he wants to. sometimes he chills out in there when he wants to get away from the other dogs.

the biggest thing is to keep at it. don't get discouraged. set up a schedule and take them out often. stick to the schedule as closely as possible. i'm not sure where you're getting your dog from but if it's from a breeder most responsible breeder won't let it go before 10 wks just for developement purposes. around this age they should go out 5-6 times to avoid accidents at minimum.

if you are very against crate training i would suggest a puppy play pen to avoid making messes everywhere. you can line it with newspaper or puppy wee wee pads. make sure you invest in a good pet stain remover. remember don't reprimand the dog if you didn't see him doing anything, he won't know what he's being punished for

yorkies are very energetic so you can use almost anything as a training tool. my yorkie responded very well to treats but not clickers because the sound scared him

edit-crate training in the beginning is letting him get familiar with the crate. put a treat at the back and let him walk in to get it. don't close it the first time he goes in you just want to get him used to it. if he becomes whiny when you finally put him in then take a used shirt of yours and put it in with him. i had my yorkies crate in my room so i didn't have to do that.

never leave a dog in a crate for more than four hours unless it's to go to sleep at night. cut off food and water around 7pm so they can sleep through the night.

is there some sort of dog boarding area? how much?

Q. I'm 12 and i want to go to Disney world for our 2010 summer i know It's like a whole year from now but what. so what should i do to start planning and i found this hotel that is pet friendly. HELP ME PLAN AND SHOULD I BRING MY PUPPY i found out the at the outer gate of each park there is a kennel for pet. and should we drive which is like 2 days or take a airplane

Answer
I would wait a little bit until you book, or start looking around for prices. Disney may have a special offer, and if you book before that time you may not get it. You can to the Disney World website and mock up a vacation.

I wouldn't bring your dog, I would leave him with a relative or friend he knows. You probably won't see him to much, and Disney doesn't allow pets at their resort.

I would also recommend flying. It maybe a little expensive, but so is gas.

I would stay on Disney Property.

Since you're planning to go to Disney World I would suggest Disney's Pop Century Resort. It is only about $82 per night and they give your transportation around the Walt Disney World Resort and to your hotel from Orlando International Airport free.

Here is Pop Century's Website:

Answer
Overview
Although veterinarians in many countries may have been awarded with doctoral degrees and receive extensive training in veterinary medical practice, there are many career fields open to those with veterinary degrees other than clinical practice. Those that do work in clinical settings often practice medicine in specific fields, such as companion animal or "pet" medicine, livestock medicine, equine medicine (e.g. sport, race track, show, rodeo), laboratory animal medicine, reptile medicine, or ratite medicine or they may specialize in medical disciplines such as surgery, dermatology or internal medicine, after post-graduate training and certification.

Many veterinarians pursue post-graduate training and enter research careers and have contributed many advances in many human and veterinary medical fields, including pharmacology. Research veterinarians were the first to isolate oncoviruses, Salmonella species, Brucella species, and various other pathogenic agents. Veterinarians were in the fore-front in the effort to suppress malaria and yellow fever in the United States, and a veterinarian was the first to note disease caused by West Nile Virus in New York zoo animals. Veterinarians determined the identity of the botulism disease-causing agent; produced an anticoagulant used to treat human heart disease; and developed surgical techniques for humans, such as hip-joint replacement, and limb and organ transplants.

Like physicians, veterinarians must make serious ethical decisions about their patients' care. For example, there is ongoing debate within the profession over the ethics of performing declawing of cats and docking or cropping tails and ears, as well as "debarking" dogs and in the housing of sows in gestation crates.

Education and regulation
According to the US Department of Labor, only 1 in 3 applicants were accepted into a veterinary program in 2002. Prerequisites for admission include the undergraduate studies listed under veterinary medicine and extensive veterinary and other animal-related experience (typically about 1000 or more hours combined). The average veterinary medical student has an undergraduate GPA of 3.5 and a GRE score of approximately 1350. US graduates are awarded either a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or the less common Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree, depending upon the traditions of the veterinary school. Veterinary school lasts for four years just like human medicine programs, with at least one year being dedicated to clinical rotations. After completion of the national board examination, some newly-accredited veterinarians choose to pursue residencies or internships in certain (usually more competitive) fields.

There are some inconsistencies concerning the titles awarded upon completion of veterinary studies. In Great Britain and Ireland, a qualified veterinary surgeon merely holds a Bachelor's Degree (BVSc). In continental Europe und other regions adhering to the Bologna regulations of university education, the graduate is awarded a Master's Degree (MVM) that allows him/her to practice clinically. In these regions, the Doctorate (Dr. med. vet. or DVM) is a postgraduate title that requires the writing of an original scientific research thesis. This can sometimes cause confusion when comparing the North American DVM title to the European DVM.

There is some reciprocal international recognition of veterinary degrees. For example:

Veterinarians graduating from AVMA (North American accredited universities), (e.g. Glasgow, Royal Veterinary College, Sydney, Massey, Murdoch, Melbourne, etc.) may work in the USA after passing the NAVLE, a veterinary licensing exam taken by all American veterinarians. Graduates from these Universities are granted a BVSc degree which has been accredited in the US and Canadia and is equivalent to the DVM and VMD degrees.

Non-AVMA accredited university graduates must also sit a week long Clinical Proficiency Examination in order to work in the USA.

In the United Kingdom and some Commonwealth nations, a veterinary surgeon is an animal practicioner regulated by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. This legislation restricts the treatment of animals in the UK to qualified veterinary surgeons only, with certain specific exceptions, including physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, on the under the supervision of a veterinary surgeon. Various alternative medicine therapies (such as homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine) can only be performed by a veterinary surgeon.

Career
In the United States veterinarians in private practice earn an average salary of $66,590 per year, while those working for the US government average $78,769 per year (2004 Bureau of Labor Statistics data). More recent data from the American Veterinary Medical Association reports median earnings of $77,500-$98,500, for all types of private, public, and corporate veterinarians. Most veterinarians are paid based on production, rather than a straight salary, so earnings can vary based on type of practice, location of practice, and even the season of the year.

The economic outlook for newly graduated veterinarians is clouded by the high debt level carried by many graduates, as the cost of veterinary medical education rises. As in other medical fields, new veterinarians tend to concentrate in urbanized areas and economic competition is limiting post-graduate opportunities in private practice. On the other hand, veterinarians are able to set-up successful new practices in established markets by providing special services such as an emergency and critical care clinics for pets and mobile veterinary clinics or by obtaining advanced training and certification in specialty fields of medicine. More than 3,800 veterinarians in the USA currently work at veterinary schools where they participate in research and teach vet students; teaching is another career path for a veterinarian.

I found a ferret..now what!?

Soon to be

I was walking my dog at the park today, and out of no where a ferret climbed up my leg (scared the beejesuses out of me) and followed me where ever I went. I took it home with me and called the local animal shelter about the ferret. They say they don't take ferrets, but they'll try and help me in my quest to find the owners (she was wearing a pink collar but had no identification). I have no problem looking after her for a few days, but I have NO clue on how to care for a ferret! Can anyone give me some helpful tips?
PS. She's quite filthy as well. Do I bathe her?
Right now she's just roaming the house. I could put her in my dog's crate but that seems somewhat cruel.

Answer
ferrets are carnivores and not able to digest veg.
i found my ferret years ago, he crossed the road to me.
Bath her with ferret or baby shampoo in warm not too hot or cold water.
Feed dry or wet kitten food, or commercial ferret food. Dog food not enough protein.
She will use a litter tray with paper or wood based litter.
Bed in dog crate if want but they can get through small spaces so she may get out.
Sleep long hours but need plenty exercise.
Ferrets are curious by nature she will have gotten out and wandered off.
I would take her if lived near you but im in glasgow, where are you?
i phoned local vets to see if anyone missing ferret, put posters up in area i found him.
You could also put notices in local newsagents near where you found her.
She probably has a sad owner looking for her.
Despite their smell they are fun, cute and lovely pets.
I love freddy to bits :) x

How to get crate trained dog to calm down?

dog crates in cars on Dog Crates, Dog Carriers and Pet Transport

My dog is crate trained. He is very well behaved in his crates at home. However, I just brought him up to college with me. And I feel like I have just made a huge mistake.
He will have much more attention and time out of his crate here. However, he currently will not settle in his crate. I sympathize because he spent 12 hours in his crate in the car on the way here. However once we got here he has been nothing but problems.
He pooped in the house, something he has NEVER done. I put him in his crate so I could go socialize with some guests my roommate had over, and he started frantically whining, barking, and digging at his crate.
We have been here for about an hour and a half. Am I over reacting? I'm know it's a new place, new people, new smells, and he had a very long day. However, I do not think I will be able to keep him here if this behavior continues. He is 4 years old, and I have had him and shown him since he was a pup.

Answer
Did you take him for a long walk/jog/whatever exercise that is appropriate for the breed, before you put him in the crate for the trip over and did you take him out for some exercise once you arrived?.

It's always a wise idea to exercise a dog before crating them.

Where do you put a dog crate in a car?

When transporting a puppy in carrier crate (Plastic with metal gate) where do you put it inside a car? The front passenger seat, or the back seats? And also how do you secure the carrier crate safely into the car?

Answer
It is your choice as to where to put it.
You should be able to secure it in place with the seat belts.
Enjoy your puppy.
