guinea pig sitter??

Sarah :]

HI im going to be gone in a month or to for 2 weeks and more and i need some on to Babbie sit my guinea pig.Is there some on in Calgary that can baby sit my guinea pig!1must be a experience's guinea pig sitter!
I live in Calgary Alberta Canada

Answer
Talk to your local pet shops, expecially any privately owned ones (ie, not corporations like petsmart, petland, or petco). Also try boarding kennels. I used to work for a pet store that boarded birds, but also boarded a customer's 2 g. pigs from time to time. The kennel I now work at mainly boards dogs, but sometimes will do cats as well, and we even got a rabbit yesterday that we'll be watching for the weekend.

Also, sometimes kennels and pet stores will know of someone you can contact about boarding your pig if they can't. Another possibility is try an internet search (yellowpages.com would be a good place to start) for "pet sitting" in your area.

shiba inu??

Q. does anyone here own a shiba inu? im looking into buying one but i dont know if they are the right dog for me.
im at school from 8am - 4pm so how will the dog be when its alone? especially if its a puppy
i live in calgary nd the weather changes a lot. if its too cold outside i wont be able to take the dog out for a walk. is this ok or are daily walks mandatory. it will only happen occasionally during the winter.
how often do they need to be groomed when they are not shedding?
how much food do they eat per day?
if i were to leave it home, would it destroy anything? ive heard that they eat through drywall.
where can i leave it during the day. should i leave it in a kennel or buy one of those play fences or w/e?
thanks thats all the questions i have so far.
also.. can they be "potty trained"
someone once told me that you can train a shiba inu to use a litterbox
one more thing
which dog is better based on what i have said. a shiba inu or a jack russel terrier?

Answer
I have a two year old Shiba Inu. She is wonderful!!

Time Alone:
I am a teacher, so I am also in school all day. We actually adopted her in May so that I wouldn't have to leave her during the day all summer. Then when I was ready to go back to school, she went in a crate/kennel. YES!! They do chew everything the first year! Put her in a kennel. Ours is 2 and is just now able to be kennel free all day.

Walks:
We are bad and don't walk her a lot. She runs around the house and backyard several times a day.

Groom:
We just brush ours every couple of days when she is shedding. Other than that, her coat takes care of itself.

Food:
I don't know...not a lot. We just fill her bowl every 2-3 days when it is empty.

I really love this breed. Mine is so sweet and playful. She loves people and other animals. I can't get enough of my little girl. :)

MY PUPPY?? Home alone!!?

Q. My puppy very new to the world is soo young and, my family and I are going to Calgary tommorrow, there's no one to take care of her and she is too young to stay in a crate for 10 hours. What should I do?? Should I stay home, because we're going my best friends family that I haven't seen in FOREVER, and I'm really excited to see her.
We cant take her to Calgary cause where would she stay?
Calgary is about 24 hours away from us, we couldn't take her with us she'd get car sick!!

Answer
Well, there are a few solutions to your dillema. I am a fellow dog-owner and understand your fear. Since it's not very nice to put her in a crate for that long, and she can't have free reign of your house, you can A) Give her some part of the house (e.g. a somewhat small room, that she can roam around in) so she's not trapped, B) Take her to Calgary, if possible, C) Take her to the kennel D) Leave her home with a friend or E) worst case scenario, miss out on your Calgary trip.

I would highly disregard the kennel, unless it's a place that they let her be with other dogs. (PetSmart has a really nice kennel), although most vets provide this service.

Also, on an unrelated note, I hope you have fun seeing your friend!

Curious about Shipping a Puppy from the USA into Canada?

Dixie's Mo

I'm looking into buying a shih tzu puppy from the USA, the dog is $850 US, and there is an hour long flight into where I live in Ontario, Canada. Shipping costs an additional $300 US.

What will be needed when I pick up the puppy from the airport? His veterinary papers, health certificate, should all be shipped with him as it's needed for shipping.

Also, will I have to pay any duty fees? or taxes?

Answer
In Calgary, I believe it's $45.00 Canadian.....somewhere close to that. But that is for a GSD. I'm not sure if they're charging us by weight, kennel size, or just what they want for lunch that day. I ship alot of dogs there, but I've only picked up the dog twice.

Hi, we are having ALOT of problems at home between our dogs. We have: 11 year old spayed female pit bull - K-C
6 year old female spayed female border collie mix - Tippy
4 year old intact female great Pyrenees mix - Izzy
9 month old Maltipoo intact male (for sale) - Billy
4 month old male red heeler intact.- Rocky

My dogs are Rocky and K-C. My moms dogs are Billy, Izzy and tippy.
The 1st problem is that Tippy constantly growls, if the other dogs walk by her kennel her food, when she is laying down and they go around her, if the is getting petted or even just walk in the room she will put her head down and growl. My mom lets her get away with this and wont say anything, she will even go as far as biting K-C heels when she walks, what Tippy does this K-C bites back at her, when mom breaks up the fight she yells at my dog for attacking her, and while mom yells at my dog Tippy keeps biting her heels.

2nd problem: Billy grabs all the bones in the house and puts them on the couch. When Rocky wants one, he will attack and bite his nose, Billy Takes them right from Rockys mouth. When Rocky Growls at Billy, mom yells at him. But then she does nothing when the little dog bites my dog.

Problem 3: The great pyrannes has proved herself un trust worthy around animals as she has killed a little dog and killed a cat, both of whom she knew for years. Yet, mom still insists she is "harmless"

None of moms dogs are obidiance trained, leash trained or have had ANY socalization. They growl at people and attack other dogs, and they are either inside in a kennel or outside in a kennel.

My dogs have formal obidiance and have CGC and other awards. The pupps is still learning. They come to calgary and have been from coast to coast and from north canada to florida.

Please help.
Billy is from a puppy mill. My mom tries to rescue dogs. I dont agree with it. It causes problems. That is how she got her 3 dogs. Both of mine came from good breeders.

Im not a bad owner.
I take care of my dogs, 2 4 hour walks a day. Raw diet, lots of attention.
Mom doesnt do anything with my dogs. I dont do anything with her dogs.

its not my fault her dogs are the way they are.
i cant neuter the heeler. The herding club in our area doesnt alow it. As does the breeder we bought him from cause she has half rights.

Answer
Asides from kicking your Mom and her dogs out (that's a joke by the way!) you need to put some obedience into her dogs! She needs to step up to the plate and realize this also and contribute to their training or give her dogs up to someone who will put the training into them. Or even though they are not your dogs, you could put some training into them. Definitely aside from getting rid of them the only solution I can see would be to train them and make sure they get their physical and mental stimulation, and sit down with your Mom and lay it down straight out how she needs to stop being naive and get training into her dogs. She needs to be correcting her dogs when they are out of line, and perhaps look to a proffesional dog trainer for a good base obedience and then keep it up. From what I get out of what you wrote she will reprimand your dogs more then hers?! And her dogs seem to be causing the most problems? I can imagine that this is causing alot of tension between the two of you also?!

Kathy

My parents are devorcing and i have a dog that i have been with for 4 years and i really don't want to sell him or leave him behide, he means alot to me and my brother, but I want to move to ontario to live snice calgary is bring bad memories and bad times.
can i bring my dog along with me, but on the plane? and what would be need to done and how much would it be

Answer
You need to check with your airline. With summer coming up, Continental will be the only airline accepting dogs as cargo. If the dog is small enough, you will be charged a fee to carry it on board as a carry on. Not all airlines allow this though, so you will need to call ahead of time.

To ship any animal, you will need a health certificate current to within 10 days as well as shot records, a kennel large enough for the dog to stand up and turn a circle in without hitting the sides or top, and a couple hundred bucks for the expenses.

Tips?!! Adivce?!!? i really need help!!?

Answer
If your mother doesn't obedience train the dogs she rescues, then she's not doing any of them, or your dogs a favor.

I'm sorry to hear you chose to buy a dog where you aren't allowed to spay the dog. In your situation, this isn't a good home for that dog as he'll learn more bad habits than good habits and that will make any pups he parents less desirable.

You cannot change your mother from what you say, so your best bet is to move out on your own.

There's something drastically wrong if a pyr kills an animal she's been friends with for 6 years. She could have a brain tumor or some other serious problem. She needs a serious vet check. All your mom's dogs need obedience training, but from what you say, your mom won't do what is right and be a strong, loving, alpha pack leader. You can be that for your own dogs and try to undo the bad influence.

I recommend you see if you can get on either the Cesar Millan or Victoria Stillwell show. They could help you AND your mother.

Good luck with your difficult situation. -!-
