What is a good dog travel kennel for the SUV?

Looking to buy a travel kennel for our lab to have in the suv while he is a puppy and was wondering what others have used that have worked well for you?

Answer
Most of the collapsible dog crates are fin efor in the car, but it might be best that the crate you buy has two door (some only have one). that way if you are in an accident and one door is blocked, you have an alternative way of releasing the dog.

I would also reocmmend that you do not get one too big for the dog. Yes you want to give the dog ample space, but a crate that is too big can result in the dog being thrown agaisnt the side of the crate in an accident, causing nasty injuries.

There is also a more expensive option, and that is to have a custome made crate built. This woyuld make the most of any available space in your car, where a normal crate may waste some space.

You could also have a tialgate and grille(guard) as opposed to a full crate if you are sure oyur dog would not be destructive.

Is it illegal to leave a dog in a car unattended in New York City?

KL

I don't normally do this and have only done it once for about 10 minutes, with windows slightly open and moon roof slightly opened for air at night in a busy parking lot of a pathmark.

So I'm just wondering if it is illegal IN NEW YORK to leave a dog in the car unattended.

Please don't leave any rude comments, READ CAREFULLY before you answer or else I will considered reporting. Thank You :)

Answer
Yes it is, I live in NY and if someone sees the dogs in car alone they can and will call police.
It takes about 3 mins in 80 plus weather for dogs to die. UKC GSD breeder just lost her 2 UKC GSDS when someone closed the windows on her cab.
Personally I had to take 2 to vet yesterday .
I put on in a crate and left suv door fully opened. Locking it with leash full window open and all other windows WIDE open. Took dog one in, mean while sitting in from of window watching other dog. jacked up A/c , parked in shade.
Then when I had to put dog 2 in .
I started car locked windows in half down position and locked doors windows they could not open with paws.
Put a/c on and they both had water
ran inside and said here is my CC got to go.
i do not travel with dogs in summer other than shows or vet or beach. When we stop at fast food husband comes in places order and than goes back into car to be with a/c . if cooler under 65 we park car where i can see them at all times.
I had smoking so my hubby gets to smoke as many times as he checks on dogs and lets say thats allot.
Sun roof should not be open unless NO sun is out. IT bakes my car I hate the thing.

How cold can a German Shepard/Husky 4 year old dog stand?

Jose

I live in Texas and it supposed to be between 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit in the night. My dog is an outside dog and he has a kennel with a blanket inside. Should I let him inside or leave him outside?

Answer
Keep the dog indoors where it belongs. No dog should be kept outdoors. Its lazy for one and its cruel for two. Dogs are highly social animals that suffer when kept outside

having a fur coat doenst mean a dog shoudl be forced to live outside. People who think this need to put on a fur coat and live outside in the cold, wind and wet for a week.

Could anyone help me with plans for building a dog house?

best material for dog kennel floor on Animal Houses
best material for dog kennel floor image

lil joker

I have a rottweiler puppy, and i was looking forward to building a dog house. I would like some help with any detailed plans to accommodate a rottweiler at it's adult size. Does not have to be anything to special just something to get the dog by the weather of South Texas.

Answer
This kennel will accommodate a large dog but is still suitable for smaller dogs.
The kennel is constructed out of 1x6 stock (treated lumber) for the floor and roof, 2x2 stock for the framing, 2x2 stock (treated lumber) for the under floor skids and one sheet of 48" x 96" x 3/8" thick exterior type plywood from which the walls are cut.

Note 1. About pressure treated lumber
Do not use treated lumber on any parts the dog may chew. Pressure treated lumber (PT) contains preservatives that can be toxic to your dog.
In this project we have opted to use pressure treated lumber for the roof, floor and skids, as it is unlikely the dog will chew these parts. The walls and inside framing are of untreated lumber, as these are the parts a dog is most likely to gnaw.
If you have any reservations and/or a dog that chews everything in sight, then use untreated lumber for the entire kennel. However if you opt to do this, remember that all untreated lumber exposed to the weather (excepting lumber that has a natural resistance to rot or decay) must be well sealed and painted to prevent moisture uptake and prolong the life of the lumber.

Note 2. The plywood
Exterior plywood has a waterproof, phenolic or melamine glue line, referred to as WBP - water boil proof.
If the exterior plywood is neither pressure treated nor made from a durable rot-resistant wood, then the plywood will also need to be sealed and painted to prevent moisture uptake and prolong its life.

Note 3. Painting
Untreated lumber should be painted using Wood Primer, Enamel Undercoat and Super Gloss Enamel. When dried the paint would be non-toxic to dogs chewing, but any damage taking the paint system back to bare wood would eventually allow water and increase the danger that the lumber may eventually begin to rot.

Construction details

Cutting list......
ITEM No.MATERIAL / SIZEAMOUNT AND LENGTHDESCRIPTION
(1) 2x2 treated stock3 @ 48"Under floor skids
(2)1x6 treated stock8 @ 31-1/4"floor
(3)2x2 stock4 @ 31-1/4"Top and bottom plates for front and rear wall frames.
(4)2x2 stock8 @ 14"front and rear wall frame studs
(5)2x2 stock2 @ 44"Side wall top plates
(6)&(8)1 sheet 48" x 96" x 3/8" thick exterior type plywood.cutting dimensions as per pattern belowwall cladding
(7)2x2 stock6 @ 22" (long point) with 45deg angle cut each endRafters. see cutting dimensions in diagram below
(9)1x6 treated stock10 @ 60"Roofing boards
Step one
Pre-cut all the skids, flooring, plates, studs and rafters to the lengths as stated above and cut the plywood wall panels from the plywood sheet to the pattern as shown on the diagram below.

Step two
Fix the 8 floorboards (#2) to the three under floor skids (#1) with 3" galvanized nails. Ensure the finished floor dimensions are 31-1/4" x 48". The three under floor skids should be evenly spaced with two each side and one in the middle.

Step three
Nail the front and rear frames comprising of top and bottom plates (#3) and studs (#4) together. Overall frame dimensions of both front and rear frame should be 18" high and 31-1/4" wide. Ensure the placement of the intermediate studs allow enough of a gap (12") for the doorway. See diagrams for reference. Stand and fix the front and rear frames in place at each end of the floor.

Step four
Fix the 2 sidewall top plates (#5) in place. See diagrams for reference.

Step five
Fix the wall panels (#6,#8) to the frames using 2" galvanized flathead nails.

Step six
Fix the rafters (#7) in place.

Step seven Fix the 10 roofing boards (#9) (5 each side) to the rafters beginning with the lowest board. The roof boards are 60" long and the kennel is 48" long, therefore the roof boards should overhang each end of the kennel by 6". The first roofing board should overhang the sidewalls by 1" to 2". Fix the rest of the roofing boards in place checking that all overlaps are even.

how do you get your dog to stop jumping over our back yard fence?

brianna m

My dog can jump really high. if you leave her alone she will jump on the backyard brick wall and jump in to the street. we lock here but she chews throw the collar! i need help

Answer
My dog can jump really high too but he better not be jumping over your back yard fence... where do you live (smiles)

Maybe you will have to place an electric fence up... She is dog that needs a kennel run - for her own safety and for your peace of mind... make sure it is built with concrete flooring and very strong wired kennel materials... Our one dog chewed a big hole right thru the chain linked fence when he was still young...

Heather, I think if you contact an organization called Animal Agencies or Animal Transport in Sydney, they will put you on the right road, or contact the Export Department of Grace International, I think there in Seven Hills, and ask who they use.

Answer
100% scam.

There is no dog.

There are stolen pictures of someone else's dog.

There is only a scammer trying to steal your hard-earned money.

The next email will be from another of the scammer's fake names and free email addresses pretending to be the "pet shipping company" and will demand you pay for shipping fees, in cash, and only by Western Union or moneygram.

Western Union and moneygram do not verify anything on the form the sender fills out, not the name, not the street address, not the country, not even the gender of the receiver, it all means absolutely nothing. The clerk will not bother to check ID and will simply hand off your cash to whomever walks in the door with the MTCN# and question/answer. Neither company will tell the sender who picked up the cash, at what store location or even in what country your money walked out the door. Neither company has any kind of refund policy, money sent is money gone forever.

Now that you have responded to a scammer, you are on his 'potential sucker' list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of great jobs, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram.

Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don't bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn't worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

If you google "Cameroon pet scam", "fake puppy sale scam Western Union" or something similar you will find hundreds of posts from victims and near-victims of this type of scam. There are sites where you can look up pictures and find the site or sites where the scammer stolen the cute pictures of the puppies.

how much for pet sitting the following animals:?

madra

This is for overnight pet-sitting

Feed at 5pm:

9 dogs (out door during day and come in at 7:30pm in different groups and then ALL finally come inside at 9pm for bedtime, the dogs are in 3 groups because they all do not get along. There are crates inside the house (upstairs and downstairs)

2 indoor cats, 5 outdoor cats

1 hamster

2 indoor bunnies

Throw corn to wild deer outside (am and pm)

All get fresh water AM and PM.

AM routine(6:30AM) is to give them all a treat and then they go back out in there designated yard and you can leave and come back by 5pm.

Thank you in advance!
I meant to ask..how much would you charge for this service? I don't have this many pets..I'm curious how much I should ask for.

Answer
Wow, you have a lot of animals. I don't know how much a pet sitter would charge. I'll just give you a idea on how much boarding would be. But for boarding a dog I charge 18.00 a day and cat 10.00 a day. I don't board hamsters or bunnies. My dog Kennel boarding facility is in Portland Oregon. Make sure you find a good pet sitter, some of them don't have a clue. And the owner ends up having them bring their dogs in to the kennel.

You might try Kalauh Kennels (408-245-1234) on Mathilda in Sunnyvale OR Petsmart PetsHotel (408-920-0472) near SJC airport. I don't know that either of them will have any openings since xmas is already less than 3 weeks away, but at least you could try.

We regularly take our dog to Kalauh and they are always great. Our dog has not stayed overnight at the PetsHotel since it is fairly new, but the facility looked really nice (they even show movies to the dogs!).

Answer
You might consider contact either a shelter or perhaps a few vets in your area. If there are dogs that are going to have puppies, the vets might know or be able to put you in touch with someone who is a reputable breeder of the type of dog for which your are seeking.

I would like to find a good vet to do a good crop... I DO NOT NEED YOUR NEGATIVE INSITE. IM ASKIN FOR VET INFO ONLY NOT YOUR INPUT ON MY CHOICE TO CROP MY DOGS EARS.... im going to do it so please dont waste your breath or my time.... thank you in advance to all that give me some good info :) i want it done right for her

Answer
Go the website of the DPCA (Doberman Pinscher Club of America) and look at the breeder referral list for your area. Contact a couple of those breeders and ask them which Vet they use. Please don't just use any old Vet. You might be very sorry if your Dobe ends up with a crop like an APBT normally has, and once the ear leather is cut off, it can't be glued back on. Take my advice. You won't be sorry in the long run, but also keep in mind that if you want the ears to stand correctly, you have to be also willing to *post* them properly for months. If you don't, the whole procedure will be worthless. Oh, you didn't say how old your pup is. Cropping is usually done between 8-12 weeks on a Dobe.

Here: Scroll all the way down towards the bottom of this page, until you get to the listings for NC. You'll see a breeder under the kennel name of GOLDGROVE. Contact Sharon and she'll tell you who she uses. Keep in mind that Sharon is a VERY busy person, as she is not only a breeder, she's also an AKC judge, so you might not be able to get ahold of her on the weekends. She owned the Sire to my last co-owned show dog. My show dog was purchased from Gorrmae Dobes. Both Sire and Dam of my dog were finished Champions, not that it matters any to you.

How do I best deal with my 5-week old Beagle puppy in the evenings without me getting disturbed in sleep?

dog crates at target on Buy Pedigree Better By Nature Dog Food: Case of 24 Cans at Home ...
dog crates at target image
Q. I have had 2 sleepless nights just to tend to my puppy Beagle who cries in the evenings in his crate. I notice he takes 1.5 hours of sleep and 30 minutes play in between in regular intervals. I just do not want him though to just roam around the room because I need him to get used to staying in his crate. What do you think is the best thing to do?

Answer
Welcome to "Parenthood"... you deal with it . He'll grow out of it soon...

First off Where is the crate?
You may want to drag it into your room or where ever you are at night so that he can hear you and smell you and know he's not alone...or you can take a shirt or something you have just worn and put it in with him so that he has your scent handy for comfort...

Also sometimes people will use a clock to simulate a maternal heartbeat...that sometimes comforts a puppy...(or, at target, they sell a "mommy sounds bear" it's this little stuffed bear that has a heartbeat...)

I know it seems miserable now...but soon enough he'll get used to his crate and he'll get used to sleeping through the night...but its always hard in the beginning...just be patient with your little guy. :)

Extra patient...your breeder or whoever should be smacked for giving you the pup so early in the first place...dogs should not be seperated from their mothers so early...8 to 10 weeks is best...5 weeks is ridiculous borderline cruel. He should be next to his mommy nursing...that's why he's having such a hard time...take good care of him...and don't get mad when he cries at night...he's already having a rough start in life. be extra gentle with him.

How to get my puppy to sleep on her bed I just bought her?

aly (p

I just recently purchased a cute little bed for my doggy from Target! (:
But I can't get her to sleep in it! She likes it, but how can I bring her into sleeping on itt???
Please help!

Answer
You could try
->putting things that smell like you on the bed, like socks or an old t-shirt or even a perfume that you usually wear
->if she usually sleeps on your bed, put her bed on top of yours.
->If you have a crate for your dog, put the bed in the crate and once she gets used to it, take the bed out, remove the crate, and put the bed where the crate was, and later you can move it to where ever you would like.

Good luck ! :]

SUMAN

can anyone help me?

Answer
You should do some research in training especially but for now, get him a reliable vet. He/She will know what shots to give the new puppy. He'll need a distemper, heartworm protection if in warm areas, kennel cough, and some others that i dont remember. He'll need a rabies at 6 months of age and spay/neutered at that age too.

He needs a GOOD quality hollistic premium kibble such as Innova Puppy (which is the best food there is, all human grade meets that pass the USDA inspection) Karma Oragnics, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, etc. These brands are EXPENSIVE but you will save money on it later on vet bills and you feed less becasue they have no fillers. Innova is what i feed and its 20$/6.6 lbs or 48$/16 lbs (in ottawa)

If you can't afford those prices then i suggest a brand like Wellness or Costco's Kirkland dog food. Those are cheaper but still pretty good.

AVOID foods like IAMS, Eukanuba, pedigree, purina. They might be famous but are HORRIBLE for your dog.

Drink: just give her plenty of water.

Other Supplies: a crate with a divider, crate set, playpen, nylabone, kongs, other chew toys, some stuffed toys, food/water dish, collar, leash, harness, training books, puppy classes

good luck :)

How much will all of these cost?

From sleeping arrangements to going to the bathroom. Everything is new to me and I can use some suggestions. I purchased a dog kennel but she has been sleeping with me.Not sure how long is unhealthy to keep dog in kennel.

Answer
HOUSETRAINING

Most dogs give off signs. They will sniff a spot and circle. You can watch for tell-tale behavior like that, and immediatly scoop up your dog and take her outside to "do the deed". Each time you go outside, take her to the same spot and use a code word like, "Go potty!" when you want her to us the bathroom. Gently pet her and praise her in a normal tone when she goes outide.

I hope this helps you. I was so unsure when I got my dog...I read all the books and watched all the DVDs and bought all the best products. I can't imagine when I have kids!

When she does use the bathroom where you don't want her to, don't rub her nose in it or anything else like that. Rubbing her nose in poop can cause infections, especially if she has tapeworms or something like that. Just wipe up the spot and make sure (this is very important!) that you use a pet spot cleaner. You can buy the best stuff on the market at PetSmart or SuperPetz. A less effective brand (but it still works) is available at Wal-Mart. If you only wiped up the spot, your dog will go back to that spot and smell her "target", and decide that's where she's supposed to go next time. The cleaner removes all the doggy scent from your floors and furniture, so the puppy can't smell it, and therefore, it isn't a choice potty spot.

If you must leave your dog alone during the day, you may want to crate train or paper train your dog, at least for a little while. They're both extremely effective until your dog is housetrained.

Also, you could put your dog on a schedule to housetrain her. When I first got my Rotti-Shepard pup, I would take him out every 20 minutes. Most of the time, he wouldn't do anything, but it wasn't the point. It got him used to the idea that outside was where that happened.

You also may need to get up during the night and take her out. My dog is 6 months old and now goes outside every two hours during the day and every four hours at night. He is housetrained, though, so I can tell you that this works.

A puppy will need to relieve herself after playing, eating, sleeping or napping, or any other activity that takes her mind away from the task at hand. I would take my puppy out right after eating, drinking water, playing, sleeping, or just lying around. As soon as he would move, we would go outside.

Limiting your dog's water intake is also a possibility. It may just be that she is drinking too much water and her body can't use it all. Dogs should be provided fresh water with every meal, after playtime and sleeping, except at night. That wouldn't be a good idea. You're dog will not die of thirst or anything like

CRATE TRAINING

A dog who is trained to be content in a crate can be kept safe when traveling in a car, visiting someone elseâs home, or being transported in an airplane. Some dogs really take to the crate, preferring to sleep in it or take refuge there when things get too hectic. Other dogs are never happy in the crate, but will tolerate it when necessary. Still other dogs panic when closed in a crate.
When to use a crate
The use of a crate is especially helpful when introducing a new puppy or dog to the household. The crate can be used to facilitate house training, and to prevent the dog or puppy from engaging in destructive or inappropriate behavior. Puppies need to be taught to inhibit certain behaviors while in the home, such as digging at the furniture and rugs, chewing table legs and cushions, and stealing from the garbage cans or counters. This teaching is only possible when you can observe and monitor the dogâs behavior. Crating can be a lifesaver when this is impossibleâwhen you leave the dog home alone, for example.

WHAT NOT TO DO
Crates can be easily misused:
- The crate should NOT be used to contain a dog simply because the dog is a nuisance and requires attention. A puppy or young dog can be annoying and exhausting, but it is unfair and negligent to lock the animal up rather than provide the training he needs.
- A dog should never be left in a crate for extended periods of time. An 8- to 16-week-old puppy should not crated for longer than an hour at a time, except for during the night. A four- to six-month-old puppy shouldnât be crated for longer than a two- to three-hour period.
- An adult dog can be crated for as long as eight hours, but it is unreasonable to expect a dog to be content in a crate if he hasnât received adequate exercise beforehand. A dog should only be crated during an eight-hour workday if he has been given at least 30-60 minutes of exercise beforehand. This is even more of a concern if the dog is crated at night as well âin which case he should receive 60-90 minutes of exercise outside, in the morning, before being placed back in the crate.

Should crating ever be used as a means of punishing the dog? If this is the only way the crate is used, the dog may come to dislike the crate. Some dogs will view the crate as a safe refuge, seeking it out to escape further punishment. It is acceptable to use the crate sparingly as a time-out place, but the dog should have many additional pleasant experiences with the crate, to counteract any possible negative associations.

A dog who is prone to guarding his belongings may also guard the area around his crate. Always be cautious when walking by an open crate or when removing such a dog from his crate. Do not reach in for the dogâeither entice him out or lift the crate up from the back to âspillâ the dog out. Some dogs appear to feel vulnerable and âtrappedâ in a crate, and may react with aggression when approached by unfamiliar people or dogs while inside.

HOW TO TEACH YOUR DOG TO ENJOY HIS CRATE
The instructions that follow are designed to teach a dog to enjoy being in a crate. The speed with which you progress depends upon the dog and whether he already dislikes the crate. If your dog has a history with the crate and is now reluctant to go in, get a different type of crate and work through the steps very slowly. There are wire crates, plastic airline crates, and mesh crates. The mesh crate is the most portable but is inappropriate for dogs who are big on chewing. The mesh and airline crates provide the most privacy for the dog. Some dogs like to have a blanket or towel draped over the wire crate to give a more âdenlikeâ feel. Truly crate-phobic dogs may need preliminary training with crate-like structures. For instance, you might wish to teach the dog to walk under a suspended tarp, step between two upright boards, or lie down in the bottom half of an airline crate (top removed) before ever introducing him to a crate. Difficult dogs also benefit from training to sit, down, stay, and to step forward and back, as this gives you more precision in instructing the dog on exactly what behavior youâd like him to perform.

The following instructions incorporate the use of a clicker to precisely indicate the behavior you are reinforcing. You can also use a verbal sound marker (such as a clearly enunciated âyesâ) whenever you see the indication to click. You may wish to begin using an airline crate with the door removed, or simply leave it ajar; flip the door of a mesh crate up over the roof. And remember, always progress through the steps at a pace that is appropriate for your dog. Repetition is the key to success, but you donât want to bore the dog by staying at one step for too long.

1. Sit down in front of the crate with your dog. Have a supply of whatever treats he really likes. Show him a treat and toss it just inside the mouth of the crate. Allow the dog to reach in and take the treat. Repeat several times, sometimes requiring that he step a little further inside the crate. Always permit him to step back out at will.

2. Show the dog a treat and move as though you are tossing it inside the crate. When the dog looks in the crate, click or say âYes!â and toss the treat inside. After a few repetitions, wait for the dog to actually take a step toward the crate before clicking and tossing the treat inside. Once the dog is taking a step toward the crate, you are well on your way. With each repetition, always allow the dog to come back out of the crate. If he prefers to stay inside (presumably heâs figured out that he gets treats in there), give him a second treat for coming back out.

3. Dog takes two steps toward the crate, click and toss a treat into the mouth of the crate.

4. Dog moves to the crate and sticks his head inside the mouth, click and toss a treat into the crate.

5. Dog moves to the crate and places one front foot into the crate, click and toss a treat into the crate.

6. Dog moves to the crate and places one front foot, then the other, into the crate, click and toss a treat into
the crate.

7. Dog moves to the crate, places both front feet in the crate, then takes another step deeper into the crate, click and toss a treat into the crate.

8. Dog moves to the crate, steps into the crate, and places one rear foot into the crate, click and toss a treat into the crate.

9. Dog moves to the crate, steps inside the crate, and places rear feet in the crate, click and toss a treat into the crate. At this point, the dog may back out of the crate or may turn around and walk forward out of the crate. Give a second treat when the dog exits the crate. Turning in the crate is preferred to exiting, as it sets you up nicely for subsequent steps. If the dog is inclined to back out, try reaching in with a treat in your hand, and luring the dog around. If the dog is nervous when you reach in, try a wider crate. He may feel more comfortable turning in a wider space or he may be more comfortable with you luring him around. Once turning is well established, wean off reaching in and luring him.

10. Dog moves to crate, steps inside, turns around, click and quickly reach inside to hand the treat.

11. Introduce a verbal cue to tell the dog to go inside the crate, such as âGo in your crate,â âGet in your box,â âLoad up,â etc. Say this just prior to your dog moving toward the crate. If the dog starts to move to the crate before you tell him, thatâs fine.

12. Cue the dog to get in the crate, dog moves to crate, steps inside, turns around, and takes a step toward the exit, click and reach inside to hand the treat. You should skip this step if the crate is so small that the dog can only take one step before exiting the crate.

13. Cue the dog to get in the crate, dog moves to crate, steps inside, turns around, cue the dog to sit or lie downâwhichever he is most likely to do. When he does, click and quickly reach inside to offer the treat. If you need to, cue the dog to sit or lie down, and then reach inside to lure the dog into position.

14. Cue the dog to get in the crate, dog moves to crate, steps inside, turns around, cue the dog to sit or lie down: when he does, cue him to stay, wait 1-2 seconds, click and quickly reach inside to offer the treat. Say âOkayâ and move back out of the crate so the dog can exit.

15. The dog should begin to automatically sit or lie down when he goes into the crate, without you having to cue him. If, at any time, the dog exits the crate before completing the full sequence of turning and sitting or lying down or staying, say âToo bad!â and withhold the treat. Start again. If he fails more than twice in a row, do something to help him succeedâmaybe reach in with a treat to lure him to step farther inside or to adopt the sit or lie down position. Rely on this only once or twice; after that, he should be expected to perform the sequence himself. If he still fails, quit the session (maybe the dog is tired of the training) or revert to an earlier step and get an easier behavior well established before progressing again.

16. When the dog can go inside the crate, sit or lie down and stay for 10-20 seconds, begin closing the door. With a wire or airline crate, touch the door, click and quickly reach inside to offer the treat. Say âOkayâ and move back out of the crate so the dog can exit. With a mesh crate, lift the door slightly off the roof, then replace, click and quickly reach inside to offer the treat. Say âOkayâ and move back out of the crate so the dog can exit. Dogs with a history of disliking a crate will need a long time at this step to become comfortable with the crate door closing.

17. Gradually move the door toward the closed position until it is completely closed. Build the dog up to the point that he can remain in position inside the crate, with it closed for 20-30 seconds, before actually latching the door. Dogs with a history of disliking a crate will need a long time at this step to become comfortable with the crate door closing.

18. Continue to increase the time the dog is inside the crate, with the door latched. If the dog stands up or scratches at the door, say âUh uhâ and cue the dog to lie down again. If he does not lie down, reach in and lure him back into position, tell him to stay, close the door again momentarily, then click and quickly reach inside to offer the treat. Say âOkayâ and open the door fully so the dog can exit.

19. Once the dog is able to lie down in the crate for one to two hours, always give him something nice to eat or chew to pass the time, such as a stuffed Kong, Goodie Ship, Dentabone, Greenie, or chew bone. Skip this step if the dog is inclined to guard these items because it is imperative that you can remove them each time you allow the dog to exit the crate.

20. As the dog tolerates longer periods of time in the crate, vary your position so you are not always sitting right by the crate. Sit farther away, stand up, move about the room, etc. Make sure the dog is comfortable with you moving about the room before you ever attempt to leave the room or the house. Some dogs may never be able to tolerate staying in the crate while you engage in an activity they consider fun, such as sweeping the floor, playing with your child, visiting with guests, or training another pet. If you must crate the dog at these times, it is better to move the crate to a more isolated location. Alternatively, you may have to put up with the dog barking and scratching to be released. Any time the dog is whining, barking, or scratching to be released from the crate, always cue the dog to sit or lie down before opening the door. The dog will learn that sitting or lying down is the best way to get you to open the door. Make sure you donât inadvertently teach the dog to whine, bark, or scratch to be released. Just make sure that most of the time you release the dog from the crate before he engages in these behaviors. If you find that he is always demanding to be released, you need to go back to the beginning steps and build up his comfort level again.

Adopting a Dog: What should I bring to the shelter when adopting for the car trip back?

Dana

Hey! Tomorrow (Friday July 11th) we are gonna go for a 1 1/2 hour drive to adopt our second dog! But what supplies should I bring besides credit cards and cash for the dog? Like a kennel? Do they supply those? My other dog will be with us, and there isn't enough room for them both to sit in the back. Should I also bring toys to keep them occupied? Please help!

Answer
Collar; ID tag (if not issued by the shelter); lead or leash; travel crate or travel harness; towels for the dog to lie upon; more towels or paper towels to clean up if the dog should get carsick; trash bag to contain any clean up materials used (if any); unscented baby wipes or moist towelettes to help clean up the dog if it should get car sick; travel water bowl, since it's going to be a bit of a ride, and you may find yourself stopping along the way; water - either for the dog to drink, or most certainly to help clean the dog up if there's a carsickness problem; poop collecting bags if you have to stop for a nature call.

Good luck, and best joy!

How to you keep your dogs warm inside crates?

Other than placing a blanket over the crate, what are other options to create a cozier crate for the pup? The crate should be ventilated and not stuffy.
Thanks for all your advice. I guess I'm worried about chewing, and want to prevent any destruction as well as dangerous ingestion of flannel/cotton/spongebob.

Answer
I placed soft fleece blankets in my dog's crate. They also have two pillows, which are optional. You can get bumpers for the walls of the crate so that when the pup leans on the walls it's comfy, I wouldn't advise these for a chewer though. I cover their crate in the evening as well. I do not cover it during the day, but when they were puppies I covered 3 sides during the day and left the front uncovered. This seemed to keep them calm. They love their crate and have gotten so used to it, that often times I find them napping in their crate when they want to get away from everything.

To keep ventilation you can make a crate cover out of a thin sheet like material, this will keep the crate airy. I wouldn't use a heavy material, expecially if your home is warm. My dogs always end up burrowing. As soon as they get in their cage, they curl up under their blankets by themselves. So perhaps you could try leaving one side uncovered.

How to figure out the proper size of a crate for my dog?

Trixies Ma

I have a new 7 year old Miniature Pinscher/Chihuahua mix. He is quite fat though, at 16lbs. I do have him on a diet though.
I've decided that due to certain behavioral issues he's having, that he needs to have a crate to be put in.

I've read that a crate shouldn't be too big, or be a metal wire crate. I already have a metal wire crate, and it might be a tad too big (if that can be an issue). Would it be ok to just use this crate (with something soft on the bottom, of course)? Or should I get a different kind and size?

Answer
You need a good size crate, you do not want the dog to get his legs cramped at all.

Not being able to lay down, turn around in the crate is not good at all for him..

People make the mistake of getting a crate only large enough for the dog to stand and hardly turn around.

You can crate train a dog much better if the crate is large, much larger than the dog.

A dog will not want to sleep or lay where it has used the bathroom.

Get some pee pads, put in one area of the crate, this teaches the dog he is to go on the pad only, and slowly reduce the size of the pee pads and he will be crate trained.

Same as having the dog out in the house now to train, you put down the pads, and slowly, and little by little you reduce the size of the pads, then the dog will not be going out in the house any longer, and will be house trained.

This is the way, I always trained all my puppies and it worked like a charm.

Please do not get a crate that is too small for the dog to have room to lay, sit and turn around in, and you need to get an all wire crate. They are the best, the dog gets air from the sides and top as well.

I bought mine from Pets Mart, they have some really good ones, you do not want to buy a carrier, where the front door is the only wire area, the dog is closed up on all sides, even though they have air holes, the open all wire ones, are much better. The dog will be happier, to be able to see out all around them.

Good luck.

What's the best place to buy a chain link dog kennel?

best outdoor dog kennel on Cheap Dog Kennels - Best Places To Find Cheap Outdoor Pet Kennels
best outdoor dog kennel image

Mistress_T

I'm looking for an outdoor dog kennel for a medium-sized, fairly active dog. I seem to find the best prices online, but shipping usually kills the deal. It needs to be 5'-6' wide, 6' tall, and 10'-15' in length, and I need to be able to get a cover for it (it doesn't necessarily have to be included with the kennel though).

Answer
For dogs or for people Mistress?

when buying something used, how much should the buyer expect price to come down?

T.

Buying a used outdoor dog kennel in good condition but lady is only dropping the price about 50 dollars from original price. I would think the price should be cut in half. What do you think?
I think the lady probably had this built for her and this would account for the extra cost. Then there is tax too.She is a nice person and i want to give her the benefit of the doubt. I'll see what condition it is in soon.

Thanks for all the answers.

Answer
Depends on how old and the condition of it. If she has only had 1 year then that price is reasonable but if she has had it a number of years then the price should come down close to $100. You can haggle on the price. Don't sound desperate or she will stick to her price and you will be forced to either pay or walk away. Also depends on the brand of the kennel.

Heather, I think if you contact an organization called Animal Agencies or Animal Transport in Sydney, they will put you on the right road, or contact the Export Department of Grace International, I think there in Seven Hills, and ask who they use.

im getting a 9 week old siberian husky, i know how expensive the crates are and i only want to buy one should i get a 36L or a 42L???

Answer
Don't listen to the first poster. Crates are a great way to train dogs and eventually become a safe home for your pet. My dogs LOVE their crates, they are cosy, warm and a safe place to go. After they get a long walk (one of three walks daily) they sleep in their crates all night.

If you can't afford a crate, you can't afford to own a dog.

I personally like plastic crates, where as some people like the medal ones. I find the plastic ones more cosy and secure for my dogs, less out and the open like the wire medal ones. Your Siberean Husky will weigh (full grown) 40-60lbs, therefore I suggest a 36" L X 25" W X 27" H crate - much too large for a puppy but he will eventually grow into it. Cost $89.99 - less then you will spend a month on high quality dog food - not very expensive. http://www.petco.com/product/11074/Petco-Classic-Kennel.aspx?CoreCat=MM_DogSupplies_CratesKennelsCarriers

The crate pad for inside will be another approx. $20-30.http://www.petco.com/product/110493/Precision-Pet-SnooZZy-Sleeper-Chocolate-Brown-Crate-Mat.aspx?CoreCat=MM_DogSupplies_CratesKennelsCarriers

ETA: I always buy a second hand one (fully bleached first) for the puppy stage. It's cheap and you don't have a puppy in a huge crate.

These crates come with a divider (Which You REALLY WANT), and when your dog first goes into it you only want room for your dog to go in turn around and lay down. Also, be sure not to put down a blanket until your dog is potty trained. Otherwise, your dog will have go to the bathroom on the blanket, push it in the corner and sleep on a clean surface. When you see the mess (i hope) you clean up the mess, and over time this trains your dog to pee in the crate. One last tip, crate your dog whenever you cannot watch him/her. When potty training, your dog should be outside, and if he/she doesn't "go" they should be back in the crate. Wait about a half hour and repeat. When they go praise them, give him/her a treat and if you wish attach a command to it (Go potty).

How do I build an outdoor elevator for my dog?

dog crates heavy duty on Our Strongest Level 3 Heavy Duty Dog Crate 36 for Your Strong Dog
dog crates heavy duty image

AdamM

I want to make a pulley-based, manual elevator for my dog.

My Basset Hound can't climb up the staggered stairs to my bedroom. My bedroom is in the attic of our small house and actually has a very small balcony that hangs over the back yard. The roof sticks out a good distance over the balcony and there is plenty of room on which to securely fasten anything that needs to be fastened.
I was thinking about building a crate for the dog to ride in, and then fastening it to the roof via some sort of pulley system. (Block and Tackle maybe?)
Once the method by which we'll be lifting the crate is decided, I'll also need to figure out how to keep the crate stable during ascent and descent. I don't want it freely swaying in any direction while it's moving.

So the basic questions here are

What pulley system should be used?

and

How do I stabilize the crate while it's in motion?

I'm sure there is much needed information that I haven't provided, so I'll be watching this thread closely for any questions. If needed, I can add pictures of my house.

Thanks all!!

Answer
Best solution that I can think of is a pulley attached to one of the roof support members with a large eyebolt. Fasten a ratcheting crank yo something solid in the room and run cable or rope from the crank, through the pulley, and attach a quick release hook on the end not attached to the crank. Instead of a box I would use a heavy duty fabric sling or a net sling to put the dog in. That will allow the cog's weight to shift without throwing the lift into a bind or frightening the animal.

How much is it to take my dog with me on a plane?

dani94

I am moving to chicago from florida and i really want to take me dog. He weighs 45 pounds BTW. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Answer
It varies from airline to airline.......I've attached some helpful information below:

Pick a reputable airline Fly from a major city to a major city (with possibly some driving at either end) to keep travel to a direct, non-stop flight. Also, be willing to adjust your time and schedule to give your dog the advantage of the best possible flight.

Making reservations. If you have always used a travel agent, consider whether that person is well aware of your dog's importance to the planning. If there isn't that reassurance, make your own plans with the airlines directly. It's easy to do, and the airline reservationist can probably answer all the questions you want to ask. After you decide on the best flight you are going to take, and remember to reserve a place for your dog, you should find out:
a) what type of plane you will be flying on, and the cargo size. Ask if the cargo compartment on that plane is heated or not. Remember that no matter what the ground temperature is at either end of your travel, up 30,000 feet the temperature can be 45 degrees or less. Practically all the main cargo areas are heated, and the temperature is kept at 65 degrees once up in the air. But ask, so you know what your dog is experiencing.
b) ask if any other dogs will be on the flight. There is a limit to the number of dogs allowed on each flight, and it varies by the size of the plane and the sizes of the dogs traveling.
c) realize that your dog can be bumped from a flight if a corpse is being transported (health reasons).
d) check with airlines what records are required for travel; usually a Health Certificate is required.
e) for seat assignment, ask to sit up front as close as possible, so that you can be one of the first ones down to the baggage claim area. At some airports, dogs are unloaded first, and make it to the baggage area quickly.
f) if where you're going to or traveling from may have temperature concerns, schedule morning or evening flights. Also, try to travel at less busy times; mid-morning, instead of first thing when a lot of business people are traveling. Early evening (if hot, any time after 5 may be ok, but again think of prime travel time.

Preparations. Use a high quality, sturdy, airline approved crate. The size should fit the size of the dog; don't buy or borrow a crate too big or too small. Too small means the dog cannot stand up in the crate (also a requirement by the FAA); too large can cause injury to your dog if there is too much room should the crate not be handled carefully and the dog is jostled within the crate. Use an appropriate size Vari-Kennel. Also travel with a separate heavy duty set of wheels, which are loaded with the dog, and most times the dog and wheels come back out together. The set of wheels are not considered a piece of luggage, but as part of the dog's travel equipment. Have a thermal reflective sheet folded and taped on the entire top of the crate to reflect heat, in case dog is left out in the sun for any amount of time. Decorate or stripe the crate to distinguish your crate from others.

Prior to traveling. If your dog has not used an airline crate before, set it up at home and let him sleep in it occasionally. If your dog is very sensitive to being "left", put an article of your clothing in it, with his blanket or pad, and when you leave the house on short errands, close the dog in the crate and let him get use to being "enclosed" by himself. If your dog is sound sensitive, realize airline engines are very loud. Sound sensitize your dog before your trip too. There are tapes, or make one of your own at an airport, of the loud noises. Also, make sure your dog's shots are up to date, and obtain a HEALTH CERTIFICATE for travel. Get the heath certificate from your vet (usually a fee of $10-25) as close to travel time as possible; it has a time limit.

Watch the weather report. Know that the temperature regulations for flying a dog is 10 degrees minimum and 85 degrees maximum, at both cities, at the time of check in (one hour before the flight, usually). They won't fly your dog over or under these extremes. Have in your mind an alternate plan should this happen. Will you allow the airlines to fly your dog without you on a later flight? Be mentally prepared to take another flight if your dog has to or don't go at all.

The day of flying. Get to the airport in of time; one and a half hours early is plenty. You will check in at the main ticket counter, because you have to purchase your dog's ticket then (no pre-purchasing for dog). Your dog is considered "excess baggage", and it is easier if you buy for both flights at once; saves trouble of having to do it a second time. Some people will keep a water dish attached inside the crate door. The problem with that, unless you freeze the water, is that it will usually splash out before your dog is boarded. Instead, carry a small water dish, a bottle of water, and leash in your carry on bag; ss soon as you get to your dog, open the crate, scream "hello" back, and have water in a dish ready immediately. When it's time for your dog to be lo

what it's the proper size of a wire crate for a male akita?

puppylove

Hi, I am going to have a male akita puppy for Xmas. I want to know what wire crate size suit him the best (full grown).

Answer
I would go with a 48 inch long folding crate. I use the Midwest double door crates for my large breed dogs (they are available at Petsmart). They are nice because the 2 doors allow you to put in right next to a wall, and they fold when not in use. Also, the Midwest brand come with a divider panel to go in the crate, making it smaller, and easier to potty train with. Good Luck!

Please help me? My dog has seperation anxiety?

Raawrr

My dog has seperation anxiety and I don't know what to do. I made the mistake of being home all the time when he was a puppy and now whenever he's not near me, he'll whine and bark and screech. I locked him up in my room while Everyone went out and when we got home, he'd ripped up the carpet under the door. He's not a big dog. He's a chihuahua Maltese cross. We're trying crating at the moment but the neighbours are complaining because he won't be quiet.

I put some stones in a can and shook them whenever he barked and that's seemed to work. But any other ideas? Please help! Thank you.

Answer
Yeah, not doing home alone training while you had the possibility for it is a mistake, as is leaving a dog alone cold turkey without having done any home alone training first. Some dogs handle it just fine, but many don't. I do wish that there would be as much emphasis on home alone training as there is on housebreaking because it would prevent a lot of separation anxiety in dogs.

Look up home alone training, pick the method where you first leave the dog for 1 second a gazillion times a day, then 5 seconds then 30 seconds etc. never progressing faster than he can take, if he starts getting upset then you've been to fast and need to take a step back. Once you are doing 20 minutes, then you can increase the time intervals, 1 hour, 1 1/2 hours, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours etc. If you have to leave him during the training period, then try to get a dog sitter. If he is extremely anxious, then look into getting a DAP diffuser to plus in a switch near him. It's not a replacement for training, but it can help ease the training.

Other tricks that can be added to the home alone training: Leave the radio on at low volume. Don't make a fuss about leaving or coming home. Once you start doing 15 minutes intervals, then exercise him before you leave, but do more mental exercise than physical exercise, this will tire him out. Leave 20 minutes for him to calm down after the exercise before you start getting ready to leave.

Usually home alone training takes 10-14 days depending on the dog, some are faster, some need a bit longer, but once the problem is already there, then it generally takes longer.

Oh...and go to your neighbours with a batch of home-made cookies and ask for their patience while you train the dog.

A crate is usually only symptom treatment and you need to address the underlying issue: that he is afraid and panics when left alone.

What do they do with dogs at places like Petsmart day care service?

We're moving in a few days and we don't want our dog to be in the way so my mom is gonna leave him at Petsmart for the day to get groomed and also to stay there until we're done moving. But I'm a bit skeptical about it. I really hope they don't just stick him in a crate for 8 hours and make him miserable, but my mom already made the appointment.

watching this video can answer most of your questions.

I would also go there ahead of time and check it out in person. Looks like the dogs are allowed play time with the other dogs and they have a nice little room where they stay, not in a crate. They even have a special "relief" room.

What is with this crate training for dogs?

Q. I read a question about crates for dogs? Someone suggested leaving the dog in a crate while at work. Thats like 8 hours. Dogs are extremely busy animals, like humans! Could you imagine being locked up for 8 hours in a crate?

Why get a dog if you dont have a yard or a house to keep it in?

Do you think its cruel to keep a dog in a crate? Or not really?

(It's SOO strange the things i hear on yahoo answers, no one i've heard of over here in australia, uses crate training. I'd never even heard of declawing a cat until i got on here)

Crates are wonderful training material for a puppy or dog, but no - never leave them in a crate for 8 hours. They teach positive manners and are not a punishment. When the dog is used to the crate leave the crate door open and they will often consider it their very own "den" or sleeping space where no one will bother them. Your shoes won't be chewed up either You can start with fifteen minutes and gradually work up to a couple hours. If it is a puppy add a safe toy like a Kong for entertainment. However if you plan to be gone all day long a crate is not an option, that is too long for any animal to be confined in a small space.
