Where can I purchase a Fennec Fox online?

I want to purchase an African Fennec Fox. Where can I locate a breeder, how much do they cost on average. And, which is better male or female as far as health and temperment?

Answer
First things first: find out about the bylaws in your area. In some places it's illegal to keep a wild animal as a pet.

Never mind what the websites say. They are very difficult to keep as pets. They spray, they tear up the house, nip hard, and unlike domestic dogs, don't adapt well to crate or kennel training. They do NOT generally get along with other pets you might have in the house.

If you are interested in exotics, first volunteer or try to get a paying job in a facility that handles them, such as a zoo or wildlife rehabilitation facility. Once you have gained experience, you might be able to keep a wild animal as a pet, but by then you'll probably have learned enough not to.

All the best.

What is your opinion of PETA and what they do?

Doglover

I've heard many opinions of them and they all have certain points. What is your opinion?

Answer
Despise them.
PETA is known to lie to push their agenda- The mass majority of the videos they show you either show the minority, or they have been outright staged and the group pushes these out as "the truth."
PETA kills far more animals than they save- Indeed there has been proof of them pulling animals out of shelters to find them "good homes" to simply euthanize them. It was said they rather see the animals dead than to have to live in a home as a "slave."

Here's a list of examples of some of the stupider things PETA wants to get rid of (see my link, these are straight from their website):
* Dog Crates- Used correctly even. Meaning I should apparently allow my dog free run of the house and chance injury rather than putting her in a secure den like location.

* Charities- Including (but not limited to) March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. PETA's reasoning on this is because scientists find it necessary to eventually test on animals.
While I am not a fan of animal testing personally I think that as far as health testing it is necessary. How many people want to be the ones to test a new drug that could potentially cure them... or kill them horribly? I don't know about you but I rather see a few rats die than a few people.

* No-Kill shelters- Yup you guessed it: PETA rather see them put down than "live their life in a cage"

* Pets- "we believe that it would have been in the animals' best interests if the institution of "pet keeping"âi.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as "pets"ânever existed."
Say goodbye to any animals you keep in your home if PETA got their way.

* Pitbulls- Yes I know this one will cause a big conflict but personally I blame the deed and not the breed: I consider idiotic owners the cause not the dogs.
Heck back in the day when dog fighting was the norm a Pit that would put their teeth on a human was straight out killed (Animal aggression =/= Human aggression).

* Predator-Reintroduction Programs- So we move them from one area, find out we wrecked a habitat, then I'm suppose to drown in deer because you don't want someone to bring them back? Sometimes these programs are necessary.

* Responsible breeding- I'm talking the people that show, health test, and work to bring about healthy purebred dogs not the idiots that throw 2 dogs together in an attempt to make a profit.
I suppose purebred dogs shouldn't exist at all? That I shouldn't be allowed to show, and have a pup with specific characteristic meant for a certain job? Sorry but it's impossible for me to go to a shelter and find a pup that will be good at herding, schutzhund, or a number of other tasks without specific breeding.

* Zoos- Even the ones that have breeding programs to try and keep endangered species around and take in animals that can no longer live in the wild for reason X, Y, and Z (A good example of one of these issues being some idiot trying to keep wild animals as a pet and when it comes time for the person to get rid of the animal it ca not live and function correctly in the wild).

* They support radical, illegal, and sometimes violent ways to bring attention to their cause is supported by PETA. They think that facts aren't good enough for the media.

* PETA is considered a terrorist group- Do you really want to be involved with that?

So my dog is having a hematoma drained tomorrow and surgery is required. The vet said it will be really messy after because they leave a spot open so ot can drain. So we bought a medium sized dog crate. Any ideas on what I should put on the bottom the crate that I can change out. Should I just use towels are do they make stuff for this?

Answer
Put something soft and familiar like his fav blanket or bed and then put a wee wee training pad onto and just change that out. Towels will work as well but may not be as comforting to the dog.

Hope your furry baby feels better soon and heals quickly!

How do I get rid of dog urine smell from her crate, blanket, mats?

KM

My dog, who is completely house broken, still has what I call 'excitement' pee accidents. She's crated while we're at work, but if there's noise from our neighbors upstairs, she'll get excited or scared so she may pee a little, or this is what we think.
Anyways, the worst part is the smell. We use a deodorizing spray to wipe the crate weekly and wash her crate pad and blanket weekly. But I've noticed that isn't helping anymore. I'll wash everything and still notice a lingering pee smell. The more her crate and mad smells like pee, the more she'll think it's ok to pee there.
What are some cleaning or washing tips to get rid of the smell?

Answer
I see Jordan uses the same stuff I do :) Odo-Ban... it is great stuff

safe for use in washing machine (do not use detergent with it.. you will get too much foaminess)
and, because it can have residue.. rinse twice

if this is a plastic crate floor cover in a wire crate... make sure you completely wash the crate (outside with a hose... odo-ban & a car wash brush.. make sure you rinse well) & get a new plastic floor cover

if this is a plastic crate, ditch the crate & get a new one

We got Rosie as a puppy 6 months ago. We believe she is probably a Cattle Dog/Boxer mix.She looks just like a cattle dog only with brindle coloring. She has been crate trained and has no problem with the crate. She will sleep in her crate when we our home but when we leave she will druel excessivly and soak her cage. Now she won't come to us when she is outside if she thinks we are going to leave or even when we are not going to leave. She will stay close to me but won't come to me even for a treat.Eventually she will come inside if I leave a door open and hopefully I will be near it to close the door before she runs outside again. She also bites the kids ankle or arm when they are running or riding their bikes. She runs around the house like a crazy dog and will even jump on the garage roof.Is there any hope for her separation anxiety to get better? What is the best way to get her to stop biting. She went to obedience training but I feel she needs more.Any good agility or obed. books/

Answer
The nipping of the ankles definately makes her a cow dog. Cow dogs are really smart. A sharp "NO" should teach her not to bite. But the herding instinct of stopping your kids on a bike... We had a queensland that had to go because she was more protective of me as a kid than my mom was. She might not outgrow that. She was bred to protect the stock. And if she thinks the kids are getting too far, she is just naturally herding them back to where they should be. That will be much harder to break her of. That's why the queenie left, my parents never found a cure for that. As for fear of being crated, some dogs take to that, others fear the confines. All I can suggest is she will take much more time than most dogs. You will have to pay a lot of attention to her. If you have a ritual you do before leaving (in my family, it's put your shoes on) make sure you catch her before you do that, otherwise she'll see the action and know what's comming next. Good luck.

my dog keeps getting the hick-ups!?

jeez

i don't know why but i give her some water to see if she wants to drink and she flips her bowl over and takes it to her crate. she has had the hick-ups daily for like a week now the first day i kinda kept tapping her back to see if it would stop and eventually she just fell asleep with it help please!

Answer
lol my dog used to do that all the time. she still likes to bury her food and if left alone she might flip over her water too. she is a queensland heeler, just a couple years old. hiccups are completely normal in a puppy for sure, they tend to go away as the dog gets older. some breeds are more prone than others.

she should be fine hiccuping, if there is no breathing problem. if you're really concerned you could bring her to a vet anyway.

you might want to put her water in a dish she cant flip, just so she gets out of the idea of dragging the dish away. my dog rarely flips the water anymore after putting the dishes in a metal holder she couldn't turn so easily.

do dogs who get raw meaty bones 3x a week need to get their teeth brushed?

Q. i feed my dog a high quality kibble as well as raw meaty bones 3 x a week which are supposed to do a great job at keeping plaque and tartar off the teeth and was wondering if this is good enough for dental care? i mean my dog doesn't let anyone brush his teeth so how do you think the two compare? is raw meaty bones just as good?
i dont think wolves got their teeth brushed

Answer
I have never brushed one of my dogs teeth once, and I have never had to have their teeth cleaned once either.

My dogs chew on big ol' knuckle bones for 30 min every day. It's just part of our morning ritual. After they eat... they run outside for about 15 min.. come zooming back in...and pile into their crates. They settle into some serious chewing. When the timer goes off at the 30 min mark... they stand up because they know I'm coming.

I pick up their bones, and we do this day after day... month after month. During the dogs routine annual check-ups the vet always examines their teeth and states they are "good to go".

Works for me!

What breed of dogs is good for a family?

Alan R

My father recently passed away and my family is looking for a dog that is good with children and strangers and other dogs but will protect our family at night or from intruders

also we would like it if the dog didnt shed much (minimally)

Answer
Hi there!

Personally I have chosen a golden retriever - actually, I have 23 goldens and golden mixes! And while breed is very important, it's temperament that is truly the issue.

Mixed breeds, goldens, dachshunds, and many other breeds can and will make wonderful family pets. I've even seen rotties make amazing family pets (I have one of those, too!) - it's really all in the personality and the raising (the way you treat and train them) that makes the difference. I've had mutts become my 'Soul Dog' and steal my heart - it doesn't always matter what the breed is, but it always matters how they take to you and respond to you from the moment you lay your eyes on them.

Also, you need to consider the following questions in your search for the best breed for you and your family:

1.) Your child's/children's age, maturity level and ability to handle the additional responsibility

2.) The size of your home and yard (fenced in or not, near heavy traffic, other dogs nearby, pet deposit, carpets or hardwood floors, do you have a dog door to a fenced in yard, etc.)

3.) The time you will have to spend with your new family member to train, socialize, groom and love them (will someone be there during the day, will they be crated while you are gone, do they have access to food/water/outside, does someone have time to walk them or take them to the park or pet store to socialize, etc.)

4.) The amount of money you are willing to spend (some breeds cost more to buy, feed and maintain, or are you looking to adopt/rescue? Can you afford their shots, healthy and high quality food, bed, toys, training, grooming, etc.)

5.) Any allergies in the family (to dust, pet dander, hair, etc.)

6.) Male or female (temperaments are different per breed based on sex and even hair length - for instance, my mother has 7 mini dachshunds, 4 short hair & 3 long hair - the personality traits of the short haired are different than the long haired. She also finds her dachshunds to be more difficult to train than I have found my goldens and golden mixes to be!) Also, you will want to get them 'fixed' by the time they are 1 - this helps with aggression, mess, personality and over-population.

7.) Do you have other pets (of any kind) or plan on getting other pets in the future?

If you can answer some of the above questions, we can get a better idea of what you are looking for and need, and that way we can help you find the best breed(s) for you and your family!

After all, there is nothing worse than getting a dog based on someone else's suggestion, or the way it looks, or just that it happened to be free and there in front of you, then finding out that dog (and breed) is not want you want/need/can handle, and having to find it a new home or give it to the pound to be killed (or worse yet, have it injure a family member or another pet!)

I hope this helps, and I would love to help in any way I can - just ask!

Warmly,
Michele

What countries in the world require a passport for a dog?

top dogs home boarding image

labrador_l

I plan to go on vacation to another country and I would like to bring along my dog. What countries, do you know require that a dog should have a passport?

Answer
Very few.
You obviously don't understand the difference between the "Pet Passport" used to allow qualifying dogs to travel around the European Economic Community and the British Isles, and the passport-with-visas that a citizen carries when travelling abroad.

EVERY nation places health requirements on livestock and plant materials that people wish to bring in to the nation, in order to keep out viruses and insect pests and bacteria and ticks, etc, that the nation is so far free of. In the case of dogs, the usual requirement is an inspection and blood titration by a vet licensed by the nation's Ministry of Agriculture BEFORE the pooch gets on the ship or plane (my X litter got born in Britain because the pregnant German brood failed one of the titrate tests so was refused access to the plane she was booked onto), and a thorough inspection on arrival. Clean countries such as Australia and NZ then require that the pooch spends a session in quarantine, unless the pooch arrives after a residency period in the other, or Britain, or Hawaii, or Scandinavia. (Points out how few truly clean countries there are, biologically, eh!)

So you need to write down the order of the countries you intend to travel through (which might be none, if you fly non-stop from home to the destination country), then contact either the embassy/consulate of each country you propose to go through, or your own Agriculture Dept, and find out the regulations for entry into each country from each preceding country.

A blind person can have the quarantine set aside for their guide dog, but no-one can have it set aside for a pet dog.

Unless you live in that "Pet Passport" area, I reckon that you'll need to find a top-quality boarding kennel for your pet while you are away travelling.

How can I stop my dog from licking and jumping?

browneyedg

My dog loves to lick everyone and all the other animals. I love my dog to death, but after a while it can get annoying. We can't even pet the top of his head without him licking your hand. I've tried to hold his mouth closed and say no, or tap his nose and nothing has worked. It just makes him want to lick even more. He also loves to jump on us when we get home. Even if we've been gone for a few minutes. We've tried telling him no and pushing him off us, but that hasn't helped either. He's a very loving dog and I don't want to scold him just for trying to love us and show affection. Does anyone have ideas on how I can get him to stop?

Answer
Two Issues: Jumping & Licking

Jumping - fairly easy. He wants to get up to your face to say hello.
1. When you come into a room, you can try kneeling at his level and see what he does. He may not jump, but may still lick. We'll get to that in a moment.
2. For the people who don't want to kneel, turn to the side or turn your back. That is a calming signal, according to Ian Dunbar and to Turid Rugaas, that dogs use to communicate... don't jump.
3. When the dog calms down, and doesn't jump, then praise him immediately. If he jumps, stop petting and turn, again.
4. If you want, you can without attention, until he sits, but pet and praise immediately, when he is quiet... and before he has a chance to get frustrated and bark... If he barks, try to ignore him, because if you pet him, then he will learn that barking gets attention.

Licking
This is easy to stop, but difficult to reduce. I let my dog lick me, because I didn't want it to stop completely.
1. Treat this like nipping, and use bite inhibition techniques. This means that when ever the dog licks, you yipe! as if hurt. He will startle, and stop licking. He will probably come back to you and try to apologize for injuring you. Pet and praise him.
2. If this works as described, then consider carefully and precisely when you want him to lick and when you don't. For example, you may not want him to lick your hand as you pet him. Then, while you pet him, yipe when he licks. If he stops licking then praise him and continue petting.
3. However, yipe a second time and stop petting, if he continues to lick.

Be aware that this is a powerful and effective training tool, but it can be wielded like a 2' x 4' board. Use it carefully and precisely, because you can stop him from licking completely... And most owners like the love and licking ... in appropriate doses.

I still use this method to communicate with my 7 year old Golden, and it is a great communication method.

How can I repair a Wire dog Crate?

Roshelle B

I borrowed a wire dog crate (Coated wire pretty heavy duty) and my crazy beagle messed up the front including pulling some wires off. Is there some way I can fix this at home? I plan on telling her but I at least want to have it fixed!
Buying a new one is not a option right now, That is why I borrowed one. I did not think he would do this but things happen! With recently buying a house as well as 3 new rescues a $200 crate is just not in the budget...

Answer
My dog did the same thing to ours. I repaired mine by taking wire coat hangers and using a pair of linesman pliars.

I wove the new wire to match the old grid, I hope I made myself clear and I hope it helps.

I am hoping to get a yorkie poo pup soon and I was wondering where I could buy a cheap dog crate in Australia? Also, does the dog need the crate when it gets older? If it doesn't, what would be the best age to get rid of the cage? Thanks :)

Answer
Your little mutt (which I hope you are adopting from a shelter!) would do best in a small crate.

Here are a couple to get you started on your research:
http://shop.vebopet.com.au/store/small-24-collapsible-metal-pet-crate.html
http://www.mypetwarehouse.com.au/ALL-FOR-PAWS-WIRE-CRATE-SMALL-61CMX46CMX53CM-p-18188
http://www.petsunleashed.com.au/wire-crate-small

Yes, you can continue to use the crate as the dog gets older. He/she will most likely seek it out to sleep and lie in.

when crate is not used for training is it still okay?

stan_mcman

Ok I have a couple of questions about keeping dogs in crates....

1. Most websites talk about crates as a training tool...does that mean at some point they should not be used anymore w/ a dog like once it's trainined?

1. How much crate time is too much? Like I mean how many hours per day? All I've heard is that it shouldn't be for more than 6-8 hours at at a time, does that mean after that the dog can go back in for another 6 hours? How much total per day is too much?

2. Can keeping a dog in a crate be harmful to it? What are the negative side effects, I mean mentally and socially?

3. If I kept my dog crated too long, could the spca take him away?

4. My dog tries to run out of the front door anytime someone comes over, is there a way to train him to not do that?

5. Has anyone tried those electronic collars that keep the dog in a certain area? Are those okay to use? Better or worse than a crate?

Answer
1) Even though my puppies (now 11 months) are completely housebroken, I do still crate them when I am working during the day because they cannot be trusted by themselves in the house yet. It is a safer option for them and for me. Once the chewing phase is over, I will slowly get them adjusted to having more freedom.

I also still use crates to help prevent bloat (I have large breeds). After each meal I crate them for an hour so they relax and aren't tempted to romp around and exercise or drink water.

2) It is recommended that you don't crate a dog for longer than his/her age. For example, if your puppy is 3 months old, you shouldn't leave him/her in the crate for more than 3 hours at a time. However, I would not recommend leaving a puppy/dog in a crate for longer than 3-5 hours at a time at any age. I know it isn't always possible, but that is my personal opinion.

3) As long as you don't keep your dog in a crate 24/7 they are not allowed to remove him from your home. SPCA can investigate any reports, but most likely will not take your dog unless they are in their crate for lonnnng periods of time, you allow your dog to urinate and have bowel movements and let him lay it in all day, etc. I would like to hope you wouldn't do such a thing anyway!

4) YES! Keep his leash on and DO not open the door until he is sitting politely (and calmly!). It may take several minutes (and several times!!), but do not open the door until he is exibiting a proper, desired behavior. Have friends come over and help you out! Have them ring the door bell/knock and practice sitting and staying with your dog. Use plently of praise and treats to reinforce the behavior! It is important that YOU don't get too excited when someone comes to the door either... dogs react off your energy :)

5) I am against any type of shock collars, again, personal opinion.

Hope this helps!

Is keeping a puppy in an exercise pen during the day okay?

best dog kennel set up on WDAY - Pets
best dog kennel set up image

person

I have a 9 week old Husky/Shepherd mix. He's an awesome little guy, but I have a problem.

When I brought him home I had someone to let him out during the day while I was at work. I work 12 hour shifts, but I only work 3 or 4 days a week. Even though I work long hours, I still have plenty of time with my pup. The person that was letting him out is no longer able to help me out.. and there is no way I can expect this little guy to sit in his kennel and pee on himself for 12 hours!

If I set up an exercise pen in my kitchen attached to his kennel, put a bunch of cozy bedding in his kennel, set up puppy pads, set up food and water, and put a couple toys and something to chew on in there... would that be okay? I know using the puppy pads will delay potty training, and I'm okay with that. I'm more concerned about what to do when he is 6 months old and HUGE! Do I need a pen with a cover?

I was going to just put a baby gate up to keep him in the kitchen, but he tries to eat my walls! :)

And in case anyone cares... He will be left to roam the house like my other dogs as soon as he is potty trained and stops trying to chew on everything under the sun. This is a temporary thing!
Dorothy - I am not giving the puppy up. That is not an option. As I said.. I am home more days than most people are. I only work Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The puppy is very well socialized. On my off days he goes everywhere with me. He goes tons of places and meets tons of people. I have several dogs, raising dogs is nothing new to me.

If you have any negative feedback, please keep it to yourselves. My dogs are very loved and spoiled rotten. I am only looking for alternative suggestions (BESIDES GIVING UP MY PUPPY) and anything else I could do to make the pen better for him.
I am aware that this is not an ideal situation.. but the majority of puppies are crated or left outside while their masters work. Puppies do not need someone 24 hours a day!

Answer
Your puppy will be bored, miserable and lonely if he is left alone all day. A puppy cannot cope with someone just to let it out, he needs you 24 hours a day.

A puppy must be toilet trained and you cannot do this in your absence. Apart from toilet training he must be socialised, if you fail to do this he could become aggressive.

Please don't wait to have him recued. No one wants to adopt a dog who is not toilet trained or anti-social, consequently they are euthanized. Everyone wants to adopt an adorable puppy.

How do I expand my dog kennel?

SamIam82

My dogs stay in a pen outside during the day while we're at work(long story, but they like to dig under the part of the fence that doesn't belong to us). I have equipped the pen with a wooden pallet for them to sun bathe on, water and food, sun shade, a grassy area and a dog house with plastic flaps. As my puppy is getting bigger, the pen is getting smaller! I need to buy a new, bigger pen, but I hate to just discard this one. It is 5 x 8. To put it together, you assemble the poles, then wrap the chain link around it and secure it. Is there something I can buy to expand this one? Does anyone have any experience with this? Any relatively inexpensive ideas? I have 2 cockers and a 7 month basset.

Answer
Buy the exact same kennel as the original one. Assemble just as before, only leave an opening. Then set it next to the old one and cut an opening. Then buy easy to work with wire and wire those babies together and you now have a two room deal.

I had that same 5x8 kennel with chain link and modified it several times.

Could anyone help me with plans for building a dog house?

I have a rottweiler puppy, and i was looking forward to building a dog house. I would like some help with any detailed plans to accommodate a rottweiler at it's adult size. Does not have to be anything to special just something to get the dog by the weather of South Texas.

Answer
This kennel will accommodate a large dog but is still suitable for smaller dogs.
The kennel is constructed out of 1x6 stock (treated lumber) for the floor and roof, 2x2 stock for the framing, 2x2 stock (treated lumber) for the under floor skids and one sheet of 48" x 96" x 3/8" thick exterior type plywood from which the walls are cut.

Note 1. About pressure treated lumber
Do not use treated lumber on any parts the dog may chew. Pressure treated lumber (PT) contains preservatives that can be toxic to your dog.
In this project we have opted to use pressure treated lumber for the roof, floor and skids, as it is unlikely the dog will chew these parts. The walls and inside framing are of untreated lumber, as these are the parts a dog is most likely to gnaw.
If you have any reservations and/or a dog that chews everything in sight, then use untreated lumber for the entire kennel. However if you opt to do this, remember that all untreated lumber exposed to the weather (excepting lumber that has a natural resistance to rot or decay) must be well sealed and painted to prevent moisture uptake and prolong the life of the lumber.

Note 2. The plywood
Exterior plywood has a waterproof, phenolic or melamine glue line, referred to as WBP - water boil proof.
If the exterior plywood is neither pressure treated nor made from a durable rot-resistant wood, then the plywood will also need to be sealed and painted to prevent moisture uptake and prolong its life.

Note 3. Painting
Untreated lumber should be painted using Wood Primer, Enamel Undercoat and Super Gloss Enamel. When dried the paint would be non-toxic to dogs chewing, but any damage taking the paint system back to bare wood would eventually allow water and increase the danger that the lumber may eventually begin to rot.

Fix the rest of the roofing boards in place checking that all overlaps are even.

What countries in the world require a passport for a dog?

My dog is a Jack Russell how do I train him from soiling in the house?

dog crates metal tray image

D Y L

He sleeps with me every night if I keep the door close he will let me know that he needs to go out, but if I leave the door open poor carpet get a dump. Help do you think he needs a little baby sister Jack Russell ?

Answer
You have got to crate train him. Crate training is NOT cruel so don't freak out. Your dog, once in the crate will whine and whine, but eventually he will find it as his safeplace. How old is your dog? Is he a puppy? Puppies up until a certain age cannot hold their eliminations so that may be one problem. Otherwise, go to Walmart or Petsmart and get a crate for a small dog. One that is completely open metal (not one of those plastic carrier deals) that has a removable plastic tray at the bottom. You can take it out and spray it with the waterhose. Good luck. I don't know any sites, but if you do decide to do the crate training, google crate training and you'll find lots of literature about crate training that will help you.

We are leaving our dogs here but with no babysitters and there are seven dogs including two parents and six pu?

seong chi

*ppies. And we've tied them all up to their houses (except the puppies) because the 2 adult dogs love to run away. So what should i Do please answer quick i have to leave pretty soon

Answer
You also need to minimize the possibility of incessant barking that riles your neighbors and results in police showing up on your doorstep.

Here's what has worked for me:

Create an indoor den

Leaving a dog alone outdoors all day is a terrible idea. It guarantees problems with the neighbors and behavior problems from your dog. Further, you can't protect your dog from sudden, bad weather.

Use a crate if you or a surrogate come in during the day to let him out for a break. The rule of thumb is don't keep a dog in a crate longer than 4-hours at a stretch.

If no one is home, use a gate, that he can see out of, to create a den in a room such as the kitchen or laundry room.

Arrange a toilet area in the farthest part of the room using a doggy door to the outside or newspapers, pads or dog litter tray.

Create a haven

Don't let him have the run of the house especially if he's a puppy. A bored dog is a destructive dog and one that can harm himself by chewing or swallowing dangerous objects.

Have a favorite blanket, toy and comfortable bed in his crate or the room where you leave him during the day. He needs a comfortable place to nap during the day.

Create mental stimulation

I like to leave a Kong toy filled with peanut butter or other gooey treat. My dog happily spends the afternoon trying to get the treat. Another good toy is the Buster Cubes which can be filled with dry food.

Create pleasant sounds

Do you like to be a quiet house for hours on end? Leave the radio, TV or CD player on. Some owners tape their own voices and leave that playing all day. My dog loves classical music. Just make sure it's soothing music, no heavy metal bands, please.

Create sustenance

I don't like to leave food out. Bored dogs can overeat just as bored humans do. However, I do think dogs should have drinking water available any time they want it. Try leaving a bowl or two of water for him. If you can afford it, use a water dispensing product.

Create a soothing environment

One of the newest products available is an electric diffuser that releases Dog Appeasing Pheromones (DAP). These mimic the natural pheromones produced by lactating bitches to reassure puppies.

One study showed a 70% reduction in barking and whining when the DAP was used. Sounds weird may be a scent-sible solution for whining puppies.

Create unemotional leaving and return

Don't make a production when you leave and come home. Spend time with your dog (playing to tire him out and taking him to the potty) before you leave in the morning.

When you get home at night, try to wait 5 or 10 minutes before acknowledging him when you get home.

Consider - as a last resort - mood stabilizers

The drug clomipramine is sometimes prescribed for dogs that exhibit extreme hyperactivity or destructive behaviors when their owners are absent and when other treatments haven't been effective.

Think of it as Prozac for dogs. It's not addictive, but it's a last resort that should only be used under veterinarian control.

What is the difference between a dog crate and a dog taxi?

Double O D

Dog crates and taxis are similar. Which should I get if I'm going to leave the dog in it for long periods of time?

Answer
"taxi" is nothing more than what a specific brand chooses to call them. Another calls them a "Pet Porter", and yet another calls them a "Kennel-Cab". This is caused because these companies register these as trade names so that other companies can't use them.

Regardless of what brand they are, or style, I call them a "crate", and all my dogs know them as "kennel"

What should i use as a temporary gate for my indoor dog crate?

Kristjan

I lost the gate to my indoor dog crate but i dont want to buy a whole new crate! I meed to use the crate because my cat has a broken leg and needs to be confined to an indoor dog crate. Please help!

Answer
Cut off the side of one of those plastic wash baskets maybe and use some duct tape to keep it in place. it's ok to do if its temporary. I'm sure you'll find spare pieces for crates on a pet supply website :)

How do i use a dog crate to make it pee outside?

dog crates best on Details about Top Paw Folding Double Door Dog Crate
dog crates best image

Dean

I heard that there were ways of using the dog crate for potty training.
EX. leave it in there and look for any unusual behavior and make it go outside on a leash or something

(dunno if thats right ^^ up there)
So how do i use a dog crate to potty train it?

Answer
Being in the crate doesn't teach your puppy to pee outside, you taking the puppy outside and rewarding it when it pees outside does. Crate training just helps in this process by encouraging the puppy to hold it's bladder.

Dogs instinctively like to "den", they like small, closed in places to sleep and call their own, so a crate is like that for a dog. Once your dog is properly introduced to it's crate, and trained to not mind the door being closed, he will not want to pee in there, because it's his bed. Who likes to sleep in pee? So then the dog will WANT to hold it's bladder until you can take it outside to pee.

BUT, puppies physically can't hold their bladders all that long. Puppy can be in it's crate up to the number of months it is old (so a two month puppy need to be let out every 2 hours). So again, using the crate training method takes consistency on your part, letting the puppy out very often so it can be outside and learn that is where it should go pee.

Puppies need to be let outside after drinking, as soon as they wake up, after eating and after a good play session. Also, just every couple of hours or so when they are really young. If you leave your puppy in the crate too long, it won't want to pee in it's bed, but it will have no choice but to do so, which really slows down the training process.

Good Luck!

Bringing home a shih tzu puppy what do i need?

lbautista2

im bringing home a 8 week old female shih tzu in a couple of days. what are some supplies i need? this will be my first dog. i need to know some information on potty training and training in general. thank you.

Answer
You'll need a crate that fits her. It should be large enough for her to stand up, turn around, and lie flat out on her side and no larger. Since you know she's going to grow, you might choose a live-stages crate that has a movable panel so you can adjust the size as she grows. A crate is an important part of potty training. If all goes well, and you stick with the potty training program she'll only need it for a few months.

A crate is handy to have anyway for transporting her in your car, or for confining her when she is ill, injured, or for a few days after she's spayed when you'd rather she didn't run around and damage her stitches.

Here's a good article on using a crate to housetrain a pup:
http://www.inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html

She'll need food and water bowls, a collar that fits, a leash, and some toys. Poop bags are a definite plus, but you can use sandwich bags or plastic shopping bags in a pinch.

For grooming she'll need puppy shampoo; do not use human shampoo instead. Puppies are messy so expect to give her a few baths. She'll need a pin brush to take out her tangles. Your pet store should be able to point you to the pin brushes. Those are the ones suitable for her coat texture. You'll need nail trimmers and a product called "quik stop." If you accidentally clip too much while trimming her nails, they may bleed. Quik stop stops the bleeding. Or just take her to a groomer and let them deal with the nails.

Talk to the breeder you're getting your pup from and find out what food she is being fed there. You should buy a bag of the same food. A sudden change in food can cause diarrhea which can mask a more serious illness. So at first just keep her on her old food. If you want to change to a different brand, mix it 1 part new with 3 parts old for one week, then half and half for the next week, and finally 1 part old and 3 parts new for the third week. After that you can feed the new food exclusively.

Be sure to take her to your own vet within 24 hours of getting her. It is important for him to examine her and make sure she is healthy. If a problem develops shortly after you get her, you'll want to be able to prove it if she was already sick when you got her. Then the person who sold her to you will be responsible for vet care. Take a poop sample with you to the vet because he'll want to examine it.

She should be about ready for her second set of puppy shots. Take her vaccination record with you from her previous owner. Ask your vet if she has enough vaccination to go to puppy class. As soon as she does, enroll her in a good puppy Kindergarten class. It is the single most important thing you can do to help her develop into a lovely, well-behaved pet. She needs to spend some time interacting with other puppies of similar age and size. She'll meet those in puppy class while you get some instruction in training and dealing with common puppy issues like nipping, housetraining, jumping up, coming when called, begging etc. Your vet may be able to recommend a puppy class.

What size wire dog crate should I get my future Border Collie?

Lost in Th

I plan to get a b/c in April. I will be looking for a female pup. I really don't want to buy two crates, for puppyhood and adulthood, so do you think this would be fine - http://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Homes-Pets-Ovation-36-Inch/dp/B0057H37SI/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1386819546&sr=8-13&keywords=wire+crates+for+dogs
She will be inside, and won't be in that much. Only to eat and sleep. She'll be with me pretty much 24/7. I am in independent study, and a loner in life, other than my dogs! Anyways, let me know what size I should be look to purchase. Thanks, guys.
Also, I'm set on a pup. Please don't attempt to convince me otherwise. And don't write out a whole caresheet for a b/c. I've done weeks of research.

Answer
Yes. 24" x 36" is the size crate I would choose. This crate comes with a divider you can use to make the crate smaller if needed while the dog is a pup & housebreaking.

What brand of dog crates come with dividers for growing puppies?
Is there a brand that you'd recommend?
Thanks :)

Answer
I've got a couple of Mid West, Select model, available at PetSmart. Dividers are easy to move, they fold down quickly - I'd recommend them.

Are there dog crates that will accommodate two dogs with a divider and two doors?

The Truth

We have limited space and I was wondering if any of you have seen dog crates made specifically for two dogs, with a divider between the dogs and two doors.

Answer
There ARE crates that would work like that, but you would have to do a solid divider (like a thick slab of wood) or two wire dividers set inches apart from one another to prevent the dogs from reaching through and getting at one another.

One wire divider would leave enough room for them to get at one another if they get agitated (which can happen), and ears/tails can be injured or lips torn up. My dog's crate has three doors - one in the middle front and one on each end. I could put dividers in there and be able to put one dog on each side no problem.

This one would work just as well (one door on each end):
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3512172&lmdn=Crates+%26amp%3B+Kennels

Please remember that the crate should be only big enough for a dog to sit, stand, turn, and lay down comfortably. That may be difficult to do if you divide one up like that. You may end up with a space that's too big, which may lead to elimination in the crate if the dog(s) can sleep away from it.

And i would NEVER recommend letting two dogs share a crate - if they're shut in and get agitated (again, VERY possible) then they'll fight. Also, a crate should be a dog's personal den. Some dogs can get defensive over their spaces!

what positions are in the animal feild?

salvag3

I would love to have a career in the animal field, but I'm not smart enough to be a vet, I live in Pittsburgh, and I don't plan to move states away
are there any sufficiently paying jobs that I could realistically get

Answer
They have vet technicians now, and assistants and receptionists. The same type of positions you would find at your medical doctor's offices. It depends on the size of the vet office what they would need, but you should check around.

Another option might be a trainer, like dog trainer, lion trainer, etc.

Dog walker? Pet sitter? Work at the kennels?

Those are just some thoughts that might help you and also might help you to come up with some other positions.

Good luck with that.

Try http://www.craigslist.com - usually there are people on there selling unneeded and even new crates for reasonable prices.

You can also try browsing your local newspaper in the classifieds, surely one day you'll come across someone selling an inexpensive crate.

How do you solve a dog problem like this?

Elaine

I have a large dog and he's destroying my yard. His urine is making urine spots, and his poop is everywhere on the grassy area. I was thinking about maybe getting a designated area for his poop and pee, but all the areas are full of plants my dad is growing. I only have the concrete part left. He is also an outdoor only dog, and I don't know what to do. I tried the dog pee pads, but whenever I come home, I always see swarms of flies buzzing around. Is there any ways that I can let my dog relieve himself, prevent flies, and I could also maybe make it myself? I have seen the prices at pet stores and some of the dog poop/pee crates are worth more than how much I bought my dog. Please help!

Answer
You can train a dog to go in one area only. Your dog maybe too old at this stage. How about cleaning up after him every day (I assume you already do so). Maybe ask your Dad if he can free up an area for the dog.
