Would a portable dog crate be OK?

L

I want to know if a portable dog crate is just as good as a standard crate for my golden retriever. It seems cozy and more comfortable than a hard metal crate.

Here is the link to the portable dog crate I am considering using for crate training:
http://www.dogtoys.com/dockdogscrates.html

Answer
your dog may learn quickly how to collapse or escape that crate.
those portable crates are meant for dogs who are already crate trained.

a hard metal or plastic crate is comfortable for your dog, because you put a rubber mat or dog bed in the bottom, and then it makes no difference what the sides are made of. your dog won't be laying on the sides, only the bottom. having a sturdy crate is important, especially for a dog who is not yet crate trained.

i prefer the plastic airline crates, they are easier to wipe clean, seem more den-ish to the dogs, and contain the hair better so i can just vacuum them out, and it doesn't get behind them and all over the sides (and stuck around the metal bars)

Indestructible dog crate?

Opt to ado

I need to know if there is a website or store that sells indoor, large dog crates that are made out of steel or some tough metal that is virtually indestructable...?
He's broken out of wire, vari-kennel (plastic and wire), and wood...
He's a tough cookie!
It isn't that he isn't trained...He's very social, he knows obedience, doesn't bark ever...He was very abused from his former owner and as a result he doesn't want to be left alone ever...I got him from a shelter on his last day before euth...

Answer
There are a number of manufacturers of metal crates --
http://www.kustomkrates.com/ is one but there are others and if you do a search on 'metal dog crates' you should find a lot of them.

add; Being destructive and poorly trained enough to not be contented staying where you put him doesn't in any way denote that the dog is 'tough' -- I have known many quite wussy dogs that easily break out of crates because they lack the capability to control themselves when crated. I have had dogs that almost dismantled the metal crates as well -- missing bolts and bent bars now, but they were not in the least bit 'tough' dogs... merely destructive and incapable of being trusted to calmly be confined when needed. Know too if you are leaving the dog too long in the crate, it will learn to break out and once learned, they remember it... takes repetition to teach them anything else but one time destroying a crate and they remember it forever!

Dog crating?

Margastar

What is "crating" a dog. I've never heard of this before, it sounds awful, especially for the larger dogs. I've never known a single person to "crate" their dogs. What is the purpose of it.
Sounds like a kennel, but they are in the backyard. I assume crates are for those which live in apartments. No way would I leave my dog stuck indoors all day with just a space for them to turn around in.

Answer
Crating a dog is simply training him to stay in his crate. The crate is like a plastic or wire "dog house" that the dog can move around in and see out of. A lot of dogs like to have the crate as a place to retire to when everything gets hectic and he's had enough. They bury their treats there and bring in toys to keep from other dogs.

People usually crate their dog either to sleep at night or if they are not going to be home and do not want the dog having the run of the house. Sometimes it as used as a little room to put the dog when visitors are afraid of the dog.
Some people use a crate to transport the dog to shows in the car. This is for safety.

Sound awful, but some dogs actually like having a space of their own! The crate comes in different sizes and you would get it for the size of your breed as an adult. The dog should be able to stand up and turn around in the crate.

It is a temporary place for the dog and should not take the place of being with the owner.

why does my dog hates his crate so much?

i have a 9 months German shepherd dog, he's free and out of his crate from 9 pm to 6 am then i keep him until 3 then I lock him in at 6 pm and then out again at 9, the problem is every time he's in his crate he wont stop barking until we let him out I don't know why he hates it that much he even pooped in it, it's hard to change it because we built him a small house we can't just buy one,so what can cause this? and is there anything i can do to make him accept his crate ?

thanks in advance

Answer
Dogs are den animals, therefore crates provide the environment appropriately for them. When a dog does Not like his or her crate that is caused from the following; used as punishment or time out area, crated for extended lengths of time, not properly desensitized to the crate, too big or too small, or has learned behaviors of how he or she can convince owners to let them out.

When you put your pup in the crate, make sure he is fed, has eliminated and has things to chew on. Never use the crate as punishment or they associate the crate with a place they go when they displeased their owners, also be sure to never let him out for inappropriate behavior. If he barks or whines and you let him out he is opt to do this again since it has successfully communicated to you what he wants. He needs to understand the.crate is a good place. Instead drop treats in his crate for being quiet. Even if it's a single second, he will try to understand how he received the treat. In short time, if done proper he will whinr less and less to receive treats or to come out of the crate.

How to crate train a dog?

nicole

i am getting a jack russell puppy soon. i am trying to prepare myself for when he comes. i need some tips on how to potty train him b/c i have never owned a dog before. i am planning on feeding him three times a day, if that helps. i do not work so i will be at home most of the time with my puppy unless i have dinner plans or something at night. i am also willing to walk this puppy everyday and play with it lots. So, how do you crate train a dog? If there is anything else i should know about getting my first puppy thast would be great..THANKS EVERYONE!

Answer
Below are Crate Training/House Training Tips.

When you are leaving the house, or going to bed for the night, do the following. Never actually shove the dog in the crate, either throw treats in there, or sqeek a toy and put it in there. The dog will eventually learn that they have to go in, if you place them in front of the crate, and say the word.. Place the dog in the crate, along with some safe toys. Close the door, give a treat, and say your crate command.(Such as, night night, crate, or bed). Leave.
**I DO NOT SUGGEST CRATING PUPPIES THAT ARE YOUNGER THAN 12 WEEKS**
Repeat slowly extending the time, and make sure you leave time between kennel times, to spend with your puppy. Never expect your puppy to stay in his kennel longer than the age he is in months plus one. (example, if your puppy is 5 months old, only leave it in there for 6 hours. No dog/puppy should stay in it's kennel longer than 7-8 hours.

Rules:
1.Try to teach them that their crate is a good place. Reward them when you place them in the crate. This is teaching them, that a treat comes with good crate behavior. Always keep your dog in the crate, unless you can keep a good eye on him.
2. Another option, if you do not want to place your dog in the kennel all of the time, hook his leash to your belt loop, this way he can not go off and use the restroom somewhere, and you don't know about it.
3.Always take him outside after;(ON A LEASH); rough play, after he eats or drinks, after being let out of his crate, after he wakes up after a night or if he is,
sniffing, staring at you, whining, or sitting at the door.
4.Don't ever hit your dog, or rub his nose in his mess. This will just teach the dog to be afraid of you.
5.Don't feed him or give him to much water, before you plan to put him in his cage.
6.Don't expect your dog to hold it's restroom, more than the age of the dog in months, plus one. But no dog should have to hold it's bladder more than a 7-8 hours.
7.Be patient!! That is the key, to housetraining. Of course if you get too overwelmed, you can always buy a book, or ask a professional trainer!
8.Always, when he goes to the bathroom ouside, give lots of praise and treats!!
9. If you expect your puppy to go outside, and dont use puppy pads when he gets older, starting out with puppy pads, is not a good idea, because this trains them that it's ok to go inside, and then before they know it, they cant, it is to confusing for them.
10. Work out a schedule that fits your lifestyle. Feed your dog the same time every day.
11.When you go outside, stay outside until he uses the restroom.
12. Dogs while first potty training, need to go outside every 2-3 hours.
13.Do not make the dog smell his mess, strike him or lock him ouside. This will just confuse the pup, and it might be afraid of you.
14. Ignore whining, unless you KNOW that he/she has to go to the bathroom.
Good Luck!

How do i use a dog crate to make it pee outside?

dog crates best on Details about Top Paw Folding Double Door Dog Crate

Dean

I heard that there were ways of using the dog crate for potty training.
EX. leave it in there and look for any unusual behavior and make it go outside on a leash or something

(dunno if thats right ^^ up there)
So how do i use a dog crate to potty train it?

Answer
Being in the crate doesn't teach your puppy to pee outside, you taking the puppy outside and rewarding it when it pees outside does. Crate training just helps in this process by encouraging the puppy to hold it's bladder.

Dogs instinctively like to "den", they like small, closed in places to sleep and call their own, so a crate is like that for a dog. Once your dog is properly introduced to it's crate, and trained to not mind the door being closed, he will not want to pee in there, because it's his bed. Who likes to sleep in pee? So then the dog will WANT to hold it's bladder until you can take it outside to pee.

BUT, puppies physically can't hold their bladders all that long. Puppy can be in it's crate up to the number of months it is old (so a two month puppy need to be let out every 2 hours). So again, using the crate training method takes consistency on your part, letting the puppy out very often so it can be outside and learn that is where it should go pee.

Puppies need to be let outside after drinking, as soon as they wake up, after eating and after a good play session. Also, just every couple of hours or so when they are really young. If you leave your puppy in the crate too long, it won't want to pee in it's bed, but it will have no choice but to do so, which really slows down the training process.

Good Luck!

I bought a used dog crate from good will that was very filthy but plan on washing it. I don't know if I want to use it for my future puppy. Can that material harbor parasites, fleas ect...
I bought it cause it was a good deal 8$.

Answer
It can't habor parasites, but it can harbor parovirus and distemper. I would clean it with bleach very thoroughly and then a good rinse before allowing your puppy to be inside of it. It takes a powerful cleaner, like bleach, to kill parvo and distemper! There are special cleaners for kennels, but they are expensive and you usually have to special order them.

Where can I get an inexpensive, good dog crate?

Vball is a

I am having trouble finding a 30-40 dollar wire mesh dog crate for my new puppy. I mean the dog will only be 7 pounds when full grown so it doesn't need to be giant. I have tried Petco but they only have the one I want online and the shipping is alot. Any suggestions?

Answer
Whatever wire crate you get, DO NOT buy a Petmate wire kennel that has been sold in Walmart stores!! Here is a link showing what has happened to puppies left in these crates. http://www.kennelsafety.com/ We had all heard about this several years ago. A friend of mine sold a pup a few years back. The people had the pup for 5 days, before they called her and told her that the pup had been killed by a Petmate wire kennel! Look at the pictures on that link to see how it is constructed. Just make sure that whatever crate that you buy, it has secure hooks and connectors when the crate is put together.

What's the difference between a kennel and a dog crate?

Corinne

I learned from the dictionary that a crate is a wicker basket, then what is a dog crate? Isn't it the same as a dog house?

Answer
In the UK (or at least my part of it), a kennel is made of wood or plastic and is usually an outside shelter. I think the US terminology is 'doghouse'. It can also be a structure of individual outdoor runs and shelters for many dogs. A crate would generally be perceived as a travel-cage for transporting a dog when outside the house; crate-training whereby a metal or plastic cage or crate is used for indoor housetraining is fairly novel here.

Essentially, the words are interchangeable.
