How to transport my dog to another state without me being there?

baxasuka

I need to transport my dog to New York from Denver. My friend is currently watching her and how do I bring her over here without me being there to take her and most importantly, what company offers those services...She is a German Shepard that weighs around 70-75 lbs. Please let me know, Im desperate.

Answer
your friend could ship her to you by plane. Of course she would have to be in the cargo hold. She would need a health clearance from the vet just before being shipped. And a crate approved by the airline for shipping. You could check out dofferent airlines regarding costs and other requirements.

How well do Cats travel on a plane?

shywink

My friend is planning on taking a long plane trip from New York to Seattle.
Are there any special preparations she should do first?
She is worried the cat will get overly scared or excited and have a bad experience. Is there some medicine she can give him to keep him calm?

Answer
A sedative should NEVER EVER be used on a cat on a plane. Cats can have adverse reactions to medications especially since the effect of the meds will be greatly increased due to the altitude. And if the cat gets sick or starts siezuring mid-flight - what then? The pilot isn't going to make an emergency for the landing for the cat and the CAT WILL DIE.

Hopefully the cat is flying in the cabin with her so she'll be able to talk to the cat and/or put her fingers in the front of the carrier by her feet to give him a scratch. If she has the option - definitely recommend her carrying the cat on. Note that some airlines, though, don't allow pets in the cabin and ALL airlines limit the number of animals in the cabin at a time (most as little as two per flight) so she needs to let the airline know she intends to have a cat with her onboard. She'll also pay a fee - usually around $100.

As for getting the cat ready for the flight if it's not a cat that's used to going in a crate to vet she needs to start doing that right away. Get a hard crate - NOT a fabric one - as a) the hard crates are more secure, b) they permit more airflow, c) they give the cat a better view out and d) they are easily cleaned up. The airline can let her know what the maximum dimensions of the crate can be. Tell her to get the crate and set it up without the front gate in. Put a soft blanket inside the crate and toss a few toys or catnip inside of it. The key is getting the cat to go into it ON ITS OWN. You do NOT want to just force the cat into it and assume it'll be OK.

When I moved from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Seattle, WA five years ago I flew with my ferrets in the cabin and my dog and cats in cargo. Everyone did just fine, but, like I said, if it's just the one cat recommend that it's with her in cabin. I also recently flew to California to a show with one of my cats. She was a bit scared during takeoff - which makes perfect sense as the plane gets very loud and rumbly - but the rest of the flight she was just fine. Going home she just stuck a paw out on put it on my foot during takeoff - and then settled down and napped.

What size crate should I get for a medium-sized dog that weighs 34 lbs?

It's a border collie/lab retriever mix...she is 1 year old...and will she grow anymore do you think? Because I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a crate that she will end up outgrowing.
Where can I get one for cheap?
@Carol: I would do that, but I'm picking her up from the humane society tomorrow to take her home, and need something to put her in. lol but thanks!

Answer
You will often see crates on Craig's List for sale
SInce she is a mix, you're going to need to measure her height at the top of her head when she stands square - she will need to be able to stand without ducking down, and turn around comfortably, and lie on her side with her legs stretched out.

What is involved with shipping a dog?

Silverwolf

Long story short, I need to get a young dog (1 year old lab) from Eastern Pennsylvania to Midwest Ohio and have no clue how to go about it. HELP!!!

How much does it cost?
What do I do?
Who do I contact?

Any info is appreciated.

Answer
Alaska and Continental are the two best airlines to fly a dog (no weather restrictions) , Delta comes in next. You have to make sure the dog is current on all vaccines, take him to the vet for a health certificate prior to travel. Book your flight, get an appropriate crate and you are all set. The price is by weight and crate size, rough guess about $400.

You can check out the airlines web page for more detailed info.

Need help arranging furniture in a large living room...?

dog crates decorative on Decorative Wicker Pet Residence Dog Den, Dog Den, Dog Crate Furniture
dog crates decorative image

.KNL.

We have a fairly large living room. Furniture consists of a couch, love seat, large round coffee table, large decorative table, hide-away entertainment center, and a recliner.
The problem is that I have pretty terrible vision, and even with glasses I can't see the television from more than six or so feet away, and I have a hard time with even that. There is a hallway from one wall, the kitchen behind the living room, and the door to the office on the next wall, so we only have two walls to work with, and it's frustrating! I kinda don't want the couch just floating in the middle of the room, but I'm afraid that may be what has to happen.

Does anyone else have any ideas or advice?
We also have a HUGE bedroom that only has a bed, dog crate, dog bed, and two night stands in it, which leaves a HUGE space full of nothingness. (Our clothes and closet are in the master bathroom). Ideas to make it look less empty and huge??

Thanks in advance! :D

Answer
I'm not sure if you're prepared to buy anymore furniture..if you are..a large library table or writing desk may be in order..to put behind the floating couch..if you can't see the tv..the room won't be very functional...if $ is an issue...you can find lovely pieces of furniture at garage sales..resale shops..etc..all they may need is a coat of paint or some elbow grease..we recently downsized and our old house had a huge living rm and master bedroom too..i used 2 sofas..one placed.. "floating",if you will..in the center of the room...i put a large "ladie's writng desk" behind it..used it to display pictures..some bric a brac..etc..maybe you could do the loveseat and recliner on one side of the room..the tv..and entertainment center on one wall..and the couch floating..with the large decorative table placed behind it..the round coffee table..maybe in front of the couch..between the loveseat and recliner you could consider a round, skirted table..these can be found fairly reasonably or even made with an old barstool and a round wooden top nailed to it..you could make or have made a round tablecloth that would blend with whatever fabrics you may have..In the bedroom..again..i would consider adding a dresser..or chest of drawers..or both..go to garage sales and try to find something that is sturdy and simple..you can do all sorts of things with paint..you can, again, use a skirted table..maybe add a chair from a garage or resale shop..and voila!! I am assuming that you do not want to spend much $..so these are all thrify ideas..good luck to you..I have found that the most charming houses are those that required some imagination to put together instead of just throwing $ at them..

I'm having some inside dog problems.?

Foxworthy

My dog is an outside dog and i recently trained him to be i an inside dog (via not peeing or crapping anywhere, completely calm, obeys commands), but there is one more things to scratch off the list.

1: my room mate just has to have her little square pillows on the couch. PROBLEM: My dog thinks her pillows are chew toys.

if anyone can help me with this, respond. please.

-Jeff "Foxworthy" Koen

PS: BLAM >:( (from newgrounds.com)

Answer
You could try getting some of that "bitter" spray that makes the object taste nasty. However, I had a lab (and I tired every single kind of spray out there) and he just thought it was sort of like icing on a cake. Yum!
Some dogs are just chewers. You are not going to be able to avoid that. So instead you need to adjust your way of doing things to protect the dogs and your home (a pillow is full of fluffy stuff that can cause obstruction when eaten - very dangerous for a dog)

Give him a bed of his own, on the floor in the main living area - then tell him the couch is off limits. If he's not on the couch, he won't be able to get at the pillow.

Don't get him any cloth chew-toys. To a dog that regularly gets fabric chew-toys, that pillow is nothing but a great big chew toy that, for some reason you are not sharing. They don't get it.

Offer him other toys. If you catch him chewing on the pillow, say "no" in a very stern voice. Then hand him something that he *can* chew on. Take him over to his bed and praise him when he chews on the correct object.

Lastly, consider crating him when you are not home to make sure that he is not chewing things. While some owners find this cruel, dogs actually like their crate, considering it their own special little den.

Good luck to you! On both counts - the dog who is still learning and the roommate who won't budge on decorative pillows. :)

Answer
A cheap place. Yeah that last time a friend of mine used a cheap place her dog got cancer and passed away. Of course the sued, but the money wasn't worth losing their beloved pet.

EDIT~!!
and for the person that said cancer hsa nothing to do with it She got something from the kennel that caused her to get cancer. so thats my bad wording she didnt "get cancer", but something she got caused her to get cancer.

Don't look for "cheap" go to different boarding places walk around in each to see the cleanliness how they treat the animals..etc..

Me personally I never board my dog. I always pay family to keep her for me when I leave. I would think thats the best thing especially when its a small dog.
__________________________________________

HA well if your neighbor is worse than the boarding place well then "duh" don't let your neighbor take care of them...thats just common sense.

I pay my neighbor and she always takes care of my dog. Feeds her brings her dogs over to play with her. BUT like I said I pay her lol. I do trust my neighbor if I didnt well then she would'nt be watching my dogs so if you have someone you can "trust" then I think thats the best way to go.

Amish dog breeders?

teenabeena

I recently moved to NJ and I am looking to buy a puppy. Most people tell me they got their dog from an Amish breeder closeby in PA. I did some research and I found that the Amish view thier dogs as a crop and mass produce them in puppymills. Is this true of all Amish breeders. My friends dog seems healthy. Are there any good Amish breeders around here? Do they all run puppy mills?
I am looking for a chihuahua or a miniature pinscher.

Answer
YES it is very true.. They are well known to be puppymills, especially in the PA area.. Do a google on the whole thing, you'll see that it's awful. Lots of news stories about how they don't care for their animals and breed them just to make money without regard for the dog's health or anything else..

There was a puppymill busted around here not too long ago. 40 dogs left in a barn without food and water, some dead, most dying, all full of parasites.. It was one of the Amish.

We see them in town now and then... They get their horse from the slaughter house before it is killed... Then they work it to death... I maybe wouldn't say 100% of them are puppymills because that would be a ridiculous statement, obviously there is maybe maybe maybe some that aren't like that. But it is a well known fact that they are puppymills.

Pennsylvaniaâs moniker as the âpuppy mill capitol of the Eastâ is no secret. If the state is to shed its shameful reputation, changes to Dog Law are absolutely necessary to protect dogs being bred in terrible conditions. No reasonable person or organization would argue with this.

The breeding of dogs in Pennsylvania represents a multi-million dollar industry, so it should come as no surprise that those who have the most to lose are putting forth the biggest opposition to reform. The American Kennel Club is leading the pack in across-the-board opposition. Nipping at the their heels is the Pennsylvania Federation of Dog Clubs. Both are campaigning furiously to stop humane legislation.

A member of the Agriculture Committee, Rep. Jim Cox (R-Berks), said this about high volume breeders at a recent Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee meeting: âThey breed some dogs, find them good homes, and make a buck in the process.â His ignorance of a major problem in Pennsylvania is mind-boggling.

Irving Vas

I'm basically looking to buy a few plastic kennels but I don't want to pay prices like $150 for a large kennel.

Answer
Are there any Walmarts nearby? Years ago I bought a wire crate there that was much cheaper and larger than the one I bought previously at Petco. Or try www.craigslist.org or maybe www.ebay.com or www.amazon.com .

Im about to get a 4 week old male Husky puppy, Is there any special foods i need? what are some good treats?

Ana Flores

Do i need any special Home? Can it live in the warm temperatures of Los Angeles?

Answer
That is only when better breeders start weaning. It will need puppy milk replacer plus dry puppy chow almost liquified with water. Don't worry about treats. It isn't the end of the world to remove a puppy fromits litter that soon, but it will harm how it relates to other dogs. It really needs continuing contact with other dogs, but only carefully selected healthy ones.

I would buy a small crate. Don't leave it shut up too long, or you will force it to learn to foul its crate.

As long as it has shade and water, it should be OK in the heat. Be3 ready to respond to signs of discomfort.

What SUV can fit multiple dog crates?

dog crates van image

Audra

I am looking for an SUV that can fit a total of three dog crates. Rear seats can be up or down, as long as 2 crates pointed out the back and one pointed out the side can fit! Thank you!

Answer
What size crates?
Most SUV's can fit 2- 22"x36" (special SUV side-by-side) crates side by side in the back & then a similar sized crate in front of these across, with an end crate door out the side of the vehicle. Some vehicles like a Honda Element or pretty much any Minivan or Van can even fit 2- 24"x36" crates side by side in the back. A Ford Transit offers a LOT of room for crates.
I have a Subaru Forester & I can fit 2- 20"x30" crates side by side easily. I currently have 2 Medium RuffTough Kennels in the back & a Small RuffTough in front of them sitting across facing to the side.
My recommendation is know the size of your crates & take a measuring tape with you when you vehicle shop. Then try your crates in the new vehicle before you finalize the purchase.
A good car sales person will be supportive of your needs.

How to secure dog crates/cages in a van?

Limbo

Have my own pet services business and recently got a van. How can I secure the crates to the floor when moving? Thanks

Answer
You could get bolts for the floor, custom made. Actually I use a crate in my Peugeot SW and have the rear seats down, so I can use the anchor brackets for the rear seat to attach benching chains to, anchoring the crate as my Whippet is light, and the crate could fly in a crash. Obviously any chain, rope or other attachment would be fine as long as there's an anchor point to attach it to - I just use my old benching chains which I used when I was exhibiting at benched shows (in the UK).

What's the difference between a kennel and a dog crate?

dog crates kennels on Portable Dog Kennels. Chain Link, Large, Crate, Carriers, Pet
dog crates kennels image

Corinne

I learned from the dictionary that a crate is a wicker basket, then what is a dog crate? Isn't it the same as a dog house?

Answer
In the UK (or at least my part of it), a kennel is made of wood or plastic and is usually an outside shelter. I think the US terminology is 'doghouse'. It can also be a structure of individual outdoor runs and shelters for many dogs. A crate would generally be perceived as a travel-cage for transporting a dog when outside the house; crate-training whereby a metal or plastic cage or crate is used for indoor housetraining is fairly novel here.

Essentially, the words are interchangeable.

Can using an old plastic dog crate be dangerous even after cleaning?

IamU

I bought a used dog crate from good will that was very filthy but plan on washing it. I don't know if I want to use it for my future puppy. Can that material harbor parasites, fleas ect...
I bought it cause it was a good deal 8$.

Answer
It can't habor parasites, but it can harbor parovirus and distemper. I would clean it with bleach very thoroughly and then a good rinse before allowing your puppy to be inside of it. It takes a powerful cleaner, like bleach, to kill parvo and distemper! There are special cleaners for kennels, but they are expensive and you usually have to special order them.

How do I stop my roomates dog from pooping on the carpet?

dog crates yorkies on Home of champion Lhasa apsos 353.28 miles
dog crates yorkies image

omgridicul

Hello everyone, this is a pretty self explanatory problem. I live with two roomates, one of which has a small dog. I believe it is a yorkie, roughly 3 years old. He is quite a spastic little fellow. My question is this, whenever we leave him at home for a few hours at a time, he will almost always defacate(poop) on the floor. We live in a very large apartment, and he has a good amount of room to run amok.

Whenever we are home, he goes to the bathroom, both urinating and defacating on the little pad the he is "trained" to use. However, it seems like he almost does it to spite us.

I've tried scolding him, gave him a spanking(not hard, I truly love animals) and said "bad dog" in a firm voice. I don't want to rub the feces in his face, that just seems wrong. Leaving him outdoors is not an option, as we do not have a backyard. He does however, have a place where he is supposedly trained to poop. Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Answer
DO NOT SMACK OR PUNISH YOUR DOG. First of all the dog will NEVER associate the mess on the floor with the act of going. He will think you're mad at the mess not the fact that he went on the carpet and he will then begin to hide his poop.

You should not let him run amok in the apartment when you are not home he cannot be trusted. Either crate him when you leave or confine him to a room that has an easy to clean floor, tile, linoleum like a kitchen or a large bathroom.

When you get home take him straight outside to go, when he does praise him and give him a treat, he has to know where you want him to poop. Yorkies are one of the hardest breeds to house break so it might take a while. I crate my dog when we go out because she chews, so if I don't want to be angry when I get home or have a destroyed house I crate her. Crating guarantees a happy return to your house after being away and no surprises upon your return.

If your dog is trained to go on a pad in the house, then the dog cannot associate going on the pad with going on the rug, if you allow him to poop in the house then why can't he poop on the rug, or anywhere else for that fact, that's how he sees it, he doesn't think oh I can't go on the rug I have to go on the pad, it doesn't work like that, dogs don't make that kind of association you've trained him to go inside so the entire house is his toilet. Tell your roommate to housebreak him outside so he learns that the inside is not where he goes.

How to you get a yorky to not get sick in the car ?

butterflys

How do you keep a yorky calm in there car?

Answer
Training, training, training, LOL. Short trips when the dog has an empty stomach, like up the driveway and back, then three houses down and back, building up to the distance you need at a gradual pace (an extra block per day). As long as the dog is crated, there shouldn't be any concern with this training exercize.

People tend to let the smaller dogs run loose in the vehicle, which is dangerous for you and the dog. They can cause accidents by distracting the driver, and by getting underfoot. Plus, if it's getting sick in the car, I'm sure you'd want to confine the messes to a washable crate rather than an upholstered seat, right? LOL.

If it is a matter of calming the dog down, you might try a clicker training exercize out of the car where you click the instant the dog is calm, and immediately give the dog a treat (like turkey) Use the same command (like "quiet" or "settle") Keep it consistant, and do it every day for at least twice a day. Practice outside, inside, at the park, in the car when it's not running, in the car while you start the motor and then shut it off, in the car backing down the driveway, etc. Build up the same for the carsickness. Gradually.

Hope it helps!

I am having trouble finding a 30-40 dollar wire mesh dog crate for my new puppy. I mean the dog will only be 7 pounds when full grown so it doesn't need to be giant. I have tried Petco but they only have the one I want online and the shipping is alot. Any suggestions?

Answer
Whatever wire crate you get, DO NOT buy a Petmate wire kennel that has been sold in Walmart stores!! Here is a link showing what has happened to puppies left in these crates. http://www.kennelsafety.com/ We had all heard about this several years ago. A friend of mine sold a pup a few years back. The people had the pup for 5 days, before they called her and told her that the pup had been killed by a Petmate wire kennel! Look at the pictures on that link to see how it is constructed. Just make sure that whatever crate that you buy, it has secure hooks and connectors when the crate is put together.

Where can I get a good deal on a dog crate?

scat

I'm hoping to find a wire dog crate that is at least 33" H for under $100. Right now my dog has a 30'' crate, and it's a tad short. They seem to be just over at places like Petsmart/ Petco. Is there somewhere where they are a tad cheaper, on-line is fine!

Answer
Ebay or Craigslist. Or you could find a local rescue near you, and see if they'll trade you for your 30" crate + a donation to their rescue =) I know the rescue I volunteer for would do it because they're not losing out and they'll get a donation.

If you go to petfinder.com and type in your zipcode it'll bring up some rescues near you that you can contact.

Good luck!

Like the Question Says. Please no joke answers. It's completely legal and the birds will not be harmed
TO ANDREA. TO TRAIN A POINTING DOG YOU NEED LIVE BIRDS. YOU ARE THE DUMMY.

Answer
In many locations, it is legal to net or trap wild pigeons - they are considered a pest. It is fairly easy to catch enough for dog training with a long-handled fishing net under a bridge or in someone's barn in a few hours at most. That's where my boss used to get them when I worked at a gundog training kennel.

Other possible suppliers would be pigeon fanciers willing to sell culled birds cheap. Call the local extension office to find out if there are 4-H members who raise pigeons in your area or if they know of any poultry fanciers, or look up local poultry organizations, or head to your local feed store and ask if you can post a "wanted" on their door or if they can give your contact info to the people who regularly buy pigeon feed from them.

Good luck!

I really want an alaskan Malamute, But it seems that the closest registered breeder is Howling pines, which is 6 hours away from Ottawa, Does anyone have any advice?

Answer
i will say yes. ask to look at the gene tests that they say the parents have passed.
ask about contracts, vaccinations, guarantees. ask about what they do for their pups. the dogs are shown in the Canadian kennel club which is reputable and not to be confused with the continental kennel club that is disreputable.

they also show and work the dogs which makes me warm up to them

I know this sounds comical, and that it is really sad, but I am a self-admitted slow learner and typically I am the village idiot in any social setting, and I have no experience as a janitor. I may however have the opportunity to become one, and I would actually make a lot more money then what I am making now. I am worried however if I have the intelligence for it.

I can mop, sweep, dust, vacuum, and take out trash, but that's it, I've never buffed a floor, can't do landscaping, and have no experience doing plumbing or electrical-related work or changing out lightbulbs or changing lights in general like the ones used on ceilings.

On a personal note - If I get this job, I would be doing a lot more physical work, and would be working a lot more hours. I've had a very cushy job for most of my life, but the pay is terrible, and working there is essentially just one step above unemployment. If I can get this other job, it will be eight hours everyday, with weekends and some holidays off. I'll also be making almost ten thousand more dollars a year then what I am making now, but I am also a self-admitted lazy guy, and facing such an adjustment will be hard.

FYI - I lived with my parents until I was twenty-six, then I saved up, and moved out, and I was living on my own in an apartment for four years, but had to move back in with my parents almost four months ago at age thirty due to making little money. If I can get and keep this custodial job, I could move out again, and stay moved out.

My passions outweigh my fears, and I don't always wanna be some lazy and stupid single bum. I'd like to get my own place and be a working-man, but these insecurities and fears make me nervous. I.e. Quitting a well-established job to do something I have never done before.

This one time, back in 2006, I was fired on the second day when I was a dog kennel-tech because I was literally too dumb to figure the job out, and the person showing me the ropes would not show me anything, was extremely inpatient, and had a horrible temper. I called the boss, and left a voicemail complaining how rude this person was. The boss called me back and fired me.

So how does this all read besides really sad/funny?

Note - Committing suicide is not an option so no one suggest that please.

I also don't drive, so no need to worry about literally running into me on the highway if anyone is concerned.

Answer
I went to a technical school during high school and there was a program for mentally disabled students with extreme learning disabilities. Their program was called custodial services. They were taught just about everything custodial.
For having a learning disability you write very well.
I say go for it and be upfront about it. Tell them it takes awhile for you to catch on but you'll be one of the best and most loyal workers possible.

Answer
Go to your local shelter. I have two shelter dogs and they are just as wonderful as any purebred I have ever had. And a bonus is that if you choose a good mixed breed you often escape the health problems that can come with purebreds. If you must have a purebreed dog -- check the Canadian Kennel Club's website for breeders near Winnipeg -- DO NOT BUY A DOG THAT MIGHT HAVE COME FROM A PUPPY MILL.

Answer
Its a puppy mill broker site, meaning all those pups come from different puppy mills or at least a few puppy mills. You got scammed big time into paying big bucks for a MUTT from a puppy mill that will cost you even more big bucks to keep alive. Next time think before buying, never buy on impulse. A spoodle is not a dog breed, and never will be, in the 30 years they have been breeding this type of mutt they still have not gotten any consistency and are still breeding F1, there is no purpose for breeding them anyways. NO reputable breeder breeds mutts ok.

What do I need to prepare for my new schnauzer/ shih tzu mix?

Gina

I'm preparing for a new puppy dog and I don't know what I need for it. Please give me advice.

Answer
These are the main points:

Food: Soft puppy food, then hard puppy food, then normal dog food.

Waking: One hour minimum, but as a pup, half hour should be fine.

Training: Victoria Stilwell.

Toys: soft teddies when a pup, then rubber hard toys when teething. And get a LONG and fill it with PB and treats when you leave it for long times.

Things You Need:

1. Food and Water
2. A kennel/cage or area to keep the puppy in
3. Toys
4. Food and Water bowls
5. Puppy mats (Optional, might want to use them at first, but you'll need to potty train the puppy to go outside anyways.)
6. Collar
7. Leash
8. Some small treats as rewards for good behavior, or for when you want to train him/her
9. Micro Chipped, and tag.
10. A brush to groom.

Also, you will need to puppy proof your house. Making sure the stairs are off limits etc.

Good Luck!! xxx

What can i give my 7 week old puppy to stop her chweing?

Tab B

I knew she would chew everthing when we got her but she doesnt chew what we give her to chew, what works for your dogs?
We can have a dog at the minuim of 6 weeks old and ours is 7! They don't have to wait 10 weeks before leaving the litter.
Oh she is a Black Lab X Kelpie

Answer
She is still a puppy and puppies will chew. Like human babies puppies grow teeth. When their new teeth are growing in it feels good to chew things. Here are some tips that i have figured out with my threee puppies. One of the things you may not be prepared for when adopting a new puppy is its unrelenting desire to chew on everything. More times than not this can be quite destructive depending on exactly how you handle the situation.

Puppies often chew instinctively because they need to- this is not done because they want to destroy your personal property. When puppies begin to loose their âbaby teethâ and get their 42 adult teeth they will chew to help alleviate some of the discomfort they are experiencing, much like a small child teething. The best thing you can do is try to protect your puppy from potentially harmful items.

Below we have listed several ideas that may help your puppy from being âbadâ and help it through this normal stage of development.

Provide plenty of exercise and attention to help relieve boredom which can often lead to chewing
Crate train the puppy if you are not able to watch it
Use commercial sprays (available at pet stores and discount stores)to alleviate chewing of household items- Listerine will also work.
Do not give your puppy old shoes or socks to chew on- your puppy cannot differentiate old items from your brand new ones and will chew on both.
Give your puppy toys of its own to chew on- it is also a good idea to give these to your puppy when he begins to teeth on you.
Move items you do not want the puppy to chew out of its reach- you should cover all power cords, remove any pens/ pencils, plants (many are poisonous), books, etc. Facts about Puppy Teething
There are 3 chewing phases that most dogs go through: 5 wk. to 5 months, again at 7 months, then at approx. 15 months. (The 15 month one is an emotional or growth stage not related to tooth eruption.)

The teething stages that have the most negative effect on training are the second/third ones. For instance, if you start the formal retrieve at 4 months or so, you know you are going to lose at least 3 to 5 days of training when the canines fall out. A cranky pup behaves just like a cranky teething human baby & is difficult to train.

Also, a teething 5-6 month old pup is chewing alot due to mouth discomfort, damages furniture if not crate and bite inhibit trained. Nipping and biting humans is common at this stage and must be stopped.

Todays Teething Lynnie-ism.......
Attitudes of a teething pup:
1. The world is NEW and I want to eat it!
2. The world is FUN and I want to taste it!
3. The world is BORING and I want to chew it up!
STOP the boredom! Keep that pup BUSY with appropriate chew toys such as Kongs (filled with Peanut Butter and healthy biscuits), Plantation Rubber toys, and Raw Meaty Leg Bones! AVOID medical disaster do not give your dog rawhide and pigs ear products. Cooked bones will splinter, so those should be eliminated as well.

Types of Bite Inhibition

1. Bite inhibition learned from Mother:
Mother growls at pup to halt behavior

2. Bite inhibition learned from litter mates:
Litter mates bite and play, if bites get too rough they growl-bite back

3. Management:
Don't encourage the behavior, stop it with.........appropriate object replacement. This helps divert the pup from the biting, nipping behavior with appropriate, alternative behavior.

The first two items listed above are extremely important. If the pup is removed from its mother and litter mates too early, both of those inhibitions will probably not be present, making nipping a much more serious problem. The bite inhibition management and object replacement techniques will help but it will take a LOT longer to elicit desired behavior.

Bite Inhibition Tips
This trick works well with puppy biting hands......
I bend a cheap metal spoon handle over my thumb. I hold the bowl of the spoon in my hand. When the pup or dog chomps down, they hit metal. I have had luck with bite inhibiting pups by using bitter apple or Tabasco sauce on my fingers, so they will pull back. Then I offer to,let them nibble a treat out of my other hand. If I am using a clicker to train, I then click and treat. I have met several pups and dogs who are ever so gentle if you remember to give the "gentle" cue, but, if you don't, they seem unchanged. Before going to the spoon or bitter apple, I usually go back to square one and train the bite inhibition behavior by presenting a closed palm, then an open palm in a repeated routine, in areas of increasing distraction.

Teaching a Replacement Behavior
Instead of fighting the tooth contact, try teaching the pup to "kiss" instead of "nip".
When the pup licks, give it a name like "kisses" and encourage it with high-pitched praise. If instead, the pups teeth touch you, or the pup nips, make an abrupt, sharp noise . The pup will be SO startled, that the pup will stop mouthing, at least for a second. The minute he stops mouthing, praise as you would for the licking behavior. Good timing is essential. This exercise will halt the mouthing/nipping and replace it with licking. Licking or 'not biting' equals praise, tooth contact equals a sharp reprimand. When this takes place between the ages of 6 weeks to 10 weeks, the process is VERY fast. But, the process will be totally ineffective if just one person allows biting to occur. Young children are not able to perform this procedure very well, so please keep children and pups separate until the bite inhibiting/or lick training is complete. Allowing a child, whose timing may be poor or inconsistent to do this, will simply confuse the dog.

What custom work have you done to your bike?

a2z_altere

How has it worked for you? What suggestion do you have for performance? I have a Sportster 883, but now I am outgrowing it and looking for more.

If you are going to get a Big Twin ,I swear by the FXR, but what one chooses to ride is pretty personal, hell they're all sweet.

Transport dog crates - How can I choose the right one ?

dog crates medium on Premium Black Dog Cages: Doggie Solutions
dog crates medium image

astrauskis

Can anyone give me some info how can I choose the right transport dog crate for my dog ?

Answer
Choose a crate that is 1 1/2 times the length of your dog when fully grown. Your dog should be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in the crate comfortably. If it's for a puppy, a partition should be placed so that she has 1 1/2 times her length to move around. Some crates come with a divider panel that can be adjusted to the different growth stages. If you prefer, you can choose one without dividers and make your own out of something indestructible, such as plywood.

Size the crate according to your dog's breed. The following is a good guide: Extra small: Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu Small: Boston Terrier, Jack Russell, Yorkie, Maltese Medium: Cairn Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Llasa Apso, Dachshund Large: Basset Hound, Bulldog, Welsh Corgi, Shar-Pei XLarge: Chow, Collie, Dalmation XXLarge: German Shepherd, Greyhound, Golden/Labrador Retriever

What are some items that a pigeon should have in it's cage?

Leigh C

He is currently in a 4' x 1 1/2' metal dog crate, lined with newspapers. It has water and food, and there are towels covering the cage at night, but specifically what food should we give him and what other items should be available?

Answer
I have a pigeon that was a rescue and is blind in one eye. I bought her a large ferret cage that has 2 loft like platforms in it. I took one out and left one near the top. This is where her food and water are as well as a blanket that she uses to lay eggs on. Then on the bottom I have lined with newspaper and have additional water and food. I also have a nest box for her to go in or just step up or lay on. I have a rock perch and a wood perch for her also. I also hung a few small toys for her. She comes out often to fly in one room only that is bird safe and she baths outside of cage and I mist her. She eats a speical seed mix for doves and pigeons available at pet stores and loves safflower seed and black oil sunflower seeds as well as raw nuts. Also needs grit to help digest seed. I get medium size grit like for parrots and some crushed oyster shell as well for the calcium. I also ordered pigeon grit on line for her and give that on and off. She is not as fond of that. I cover cage half way at night so she feels safe and is warm enough. Hope this helped some.

Best product to use to neutralize dog urine smell from dog run?

best wood for dog kennel image

luvslugg

We have a wood chip dog run and the urine smell is so bad that the dog is completely repulsed by it and won't go anywhere near it anymore. I am looking for something safe to use outdoors or possibly an organic / enzyme product. In the meantime I have been hosing it down and there are crazy mushrooms growing. I thought about another layer of woodchips...Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!
I have decided to take Sas1184's advice and rake the old mulch out. I am going to try this enzyme product called Odormute to treat the area then add fresh mulch. http://www.odormute.com/pet_index.html

Answer
I believe the wood chips underneath will get urine soaked and should probably be raked out and replaced. I met a dog in a kennel like this and I cant imagine how else you could do it as eventually the kennel became completely saturated. You are right about an enzyme product but that would get pricey with such a big area you might try Vinigar.

Could i make a guinea pig cage out of a old large dog cage?

kausgomu_m

I have a 6 year old Greman sheperd mix who is verry big. she has one of the extra large dog kennels. its whire not plastic or anything elce. the bace of it is plastic but i can take that out. also if i lined the bottem with something what would be good to use. i was thinking like wood and cardbord but would that work the best or do i have to do something elce.

Answer
Yes, you can use that and with some imagination, make a cool cage.

Be sure the piggie's feet would not be exposed to any wire flooring. This can cause very tragic injuries and sores. Wood and cardboard are not good choices for flooring. You need something more stable and water resistant like coroplast or linoleum.

How to keep my Houdini German shepherd in a crate or kennel?

dog crates remington on Best Dog Crate Covers: Remington Plastic Kennel, Beige/Green
dog crates remington image

Apple Juic

Well we went out of town so she flipped her cage on it's side and got out of the other side that was on top. She has figured out how to kick in the back and walk over it and get out. She can get things around her cage and eat it. She actually really loves her crate, she is in there most of the day, but she doesn't like being locked in there when we leave sometimes, so hers is pretty messed up. This is frequent, just enough to have ruined her cage. Can you suggest a durable cage/kennel for large dogs for indoor use?
Well you should assume, as it makes an ass out of YOU. We have a HUGE back yard, and a 9 foot tall fence, which she can climb over and escapre. Did the houdini part clue you in at all? I was thinking of those kennels with the hard plastic walls or whatever with the "windows" in the? Her cage is shot to hell right now.

Answer
The Remington Pet Carrier is really good. I have an XL one. My dog use to flip it over when he was being crate trained, but he could never get out of it. He finally figured out that it was useless and is now very well behaved.

New puppy, supplies, names, breeds help!?

who cares

I will be getting a new puppy in August but I was thinking I would go ahead and buy some things. I wanted help on what I should buy BEFORE I get him and than wait I should wait to get until after he is already here.
I would also like any suggestions on breeds if you have any, right now I am probably going to get a black lab but want other options.
Temperament is a big one as we are going to have the dog trained to be a service dog for me (Yes, I am disabled and we have done plenty of research and know everything we need to about this.)
We want the dog to be active, smart, and stay by my side and listen to me. I know when I pick out the dog I will need to look for this myself.
It needs to be a short haired dog please! I want a hunting/cattle dog because that is what I have grown up with and we have experience with them, such breeds as Blue Lacy, Catahoula, and Blue Heeler. But I do not believe any of those breeds would be good for a service dog, but what is your opinion on that?
Any other breeds you would like to recommend me? One that will be easy to get in Texas and has to be medium-large in size but I really do not want it bigger than the size of a full grown lab.

Another thing I would like help with would be names. I am going for names in the country/western theme, and hunting type names. I have a dog named Ranger so I do not want the names to clash too much. Any recommendations? And which do you think would be best out of the ones I have chosen.

Ruger
Remi or Remy (Remington)
Chevy
Stetson
Diesel
Wrangler
Cinch
Gunner
Gannon
Cabela
Trigger
Bowen
Bronc
Skeeter
Cooper

Thanks for your help and no rude answers please.

Answer
I think the Labrador Retriever is a great service dog. Many people who are blind or have physical disabilities use Labs. They are gentle, patient, eager to please, smart, & easily trained. I've never seen or heard of an aggressive Lab. You'll need puppy food-I like Hills Science Diet, a crate for crate training and house breaking, chew toys, squeaky toys, balls, brush, and ask your vet about ear cleaning supplies-they are prone to ear infections if not regularly cleaned because of the floppy ears. I like the names Remi and Gunner. I hope you have a lot of good years with your new puppy.
