Toller

Getting a puppy soon and her name will be Sydney. Looking for suggestions for the long name, as I'm not all that creative. My other dog, London, ended up with a lame-o name because I didn't take the time to think of anything cool.

Sydney will be a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, and will compete in AKC hunt tests.

Looking forward to your ideas!

Answer
What you need are names that go with the breeder's kennel pre-fix name. ( unless the breeder doesn't want it used) Some ideas, are a nearby landmark, ( or a landmark from country of origin) a favorite song, a play on your own name, or just something that is 'pretty' or meaningful to you. You should also ask the breeder if the litter has a name 'theme'.

The registered name doesn't need to 'go with' the call name. Very few do.
For instance, I have "Xerses of _ _ _ _ _ _ _",..but his call name is Honi ( long 'o' sound)
Another is, " Diadema Archon Ek _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "..but call name is Nougat.

My hounds' grandsire is Kibik's The Challenger..(Westminster winner) but his call name was Pepsi.

If you want the call name to match, that's fine, but not necessary.

Here are some guidelines from AKC:
# The AKC permits thirty-seven (37) dogs of each breed to be assigned the same name.
Note: Effective, February 1, 2008, AKC is testing a pilot program that allows for the registered name of a dog to contain up to (50) fifty characters. An additional $10 fee will be incurred when more than (36) thirty-six characters are chosen.

# Words and phrases that may not be included in a dog's name:

* Champion, champ, sieger or any other AKC title or show term, either spelled out or abbreviated.
* Obscenities and words derogatory to any race, creed or nationality or transliterations of such words.
* Kennel(s), male, stud, sire, bitch, dam and female.
* Breed names alone.

Why does my Red Heeler (Dog) growl and often attack when he is looked at or bothered while laying down?

XxMonsterz

My family consists of 3 dogs, one of them is a Jack Russel/Fox Terrier, another is our Chug (chihuahua/pug) and the youngest of all 3 is our Australian Cattle Dog a.k.a Red Heeler, We adopted Him from an SPCA (animal shelter) in Florida, He is almost a year old now, and he has a strange burn mark on his paw, he also gets very aggressive when we raise a hand to him while he is in the cage and tries to attack, which leads my family to believe he was abused, he doesn't get along with any of our other dogs (they are all male, but they are also neutered), there have been many random "episodes", where Cala (Red Heeler) gets very quiet and paranoid, he begins to look around very quickly, and then usually my mother will say "What's wrong Cala"? and he will growl and bear his teeth and go to his bed (cage). Then we have other strange attacks when his "mane" will stick up and he will just, out of nowhere, attack my Jack Russel/Fox Terrier, The attacks have gotten so bad that the Jack Russel no longer trusts Cala and we CAN NOT let them out of their cage's together, He has bitten my mother's hand, my brother's face and my father's arm (it made him bleed). Lately though, My dog has been very strange, I will sit down and He will lie down next to me, It's nice at first but then he gets "funny", I will move to get up to do something and He growls, It's almost like I'm bothering him by moving! We have no control over him, We think (if it's possible) that our dog may have a split personality disorder, I want answers so we can try to either help our dog with his problem or cope with it, I really don't want to have to put him down or give him away. Please Help!

Answer
Yes he was probly mentally and verbally abused. This breed of dog was created to treat aggression with aggression. Being a cattle dog if cattle get out of hand and can charge them they wil automaticallyly charge back nipping the heels and showing a ton of aggressionon till they listen. this being said who ever owned him before probly beat on him as punishment not knowing about the breed. or even cause thier are some assholes out there and beat dogs. sorry for the language. but anyways thier are several things you can do such as consult a behavior counciler . or for agression i use separation or a bad tast in thier mouth. for instance if my Blue heeler shows agression at the other dogs i will remove him from the room put him in his kennel and make sure he can see me. for a dog to want to be next to you and cant is bad for them. only for a few mins though dont make it torture. or i will use a sour apple spray and it leaves a bad tast in his mouth but it cured his probs with agression. thie ris a good website for this breed that will give you alot of info about the breed and diff ways of training for certain things. http://www.newhopecattledogs.com/index.htm on the right hand side of the page thier is a quick links, click on ACD FAQ the sixth one down i think.
this website is where i got the crate and sour apple thingy. it helped out alot. as far as him with other dogs that could be from not having much contact if any with other dogs at a younger age to the other dogs he used to live with beat up on him alot. he could also be trying to establish dominance. same thing there though. if uyou wanna try it with the cage. when he starts getting agressive put him in kennel and let him see you. make him think about the situation no matter how silly that sounds. here is another thing you can watch its a partial episode of Its Me or The Dog. the episode u want is the one on sydney. He hates other dogs and try to viciously attack other dogs here is the link http://animal.discovery.com/videos/its-me-or-dog-difficult-dogs/ hope this helps but i would consider a behavior councelor i hope this helps and good luck. O ya on the first link i put up thier is also right before the acd faq link thier is a link called training your acd thier seems to be good stuff there too. let me know if it helps and becareful
