I want a dog, but I have expensive carpet and hardwood?

Ok, so, I want to get a small pet dog, but the problem is, my parents bought $6000 Hardwood for the main floor and $12000 carpet for the top floor. The problem with the hardwood is the nails of the dog scratching it. Any accidents can be cleaned up easily. For the carpet, the problem is accidents from the dog. What should I do? I really want a dog!
Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I would pay for the dog and supplies with my own money.

Small dogs are the hardest to train. Might I suggest that you find a medium sized dog that is already house broken (go to your local shelter).

If you do get a puppy, then plan on crate training him or her. Less chance for accidents.
