Need indestructible cage for Mastiff?

Britta

He has broken out the regular large dog wire crates (by bending the door down!!), he escaped selfmade crate made of 2x4's (chewed threw and pooped out the top boards with tons of screws!!).
Help, he destroys the house when he is home alone. Anybody have an idea? He is fine in the crate when I am home but when I am gone, all bets are off...

Answer
No cage is indestructible. However, the best wire crates on the market are "Central Metal" crates. and "East Coast" crates for solid crates made from aircraft grade aodized aluminum. Neither are cheap. Both last forever!

These are the gold standard for crates and you'll never find them in a pet store.

Does the Fort Wilderness Campground in Disney World allow dogs or offer dog day care?

Answer
Yes, Fort Wilderness is the only pet friendly Disney hotel! It is set up in "loops," and several loops are designated pet friendly. http://allears.net/acc/faq_fw.htm

in addition, Disney World does have kennels which are managed by Best Friends Pet Care. One of these kennels is located near Fort Wilderness's entrance. They offer day care, grooming, and doggy day camp. http://allears.net/tp/kennels.htm

u might think I'm crazy Disney world?

Q. I'm 12 and i want to go to Disney world for our 2010 summer i know It's like a whole year from now but what. so what should i do to start planning and i found this hotel that is pet friendly. HELP ME PLAN AND SHOULD I BRING MY PUPPY i found out the at the outer gate of each park there is a kennel for pet. and should we drive which is like 2 days or take a airplane

Answer
I would wait a little bit until you book, or start looking around for prices. Disney may have a special offer, and if you book before that time you may not get it. You can to the Disney World website and mock up a vacation.

I wouldn't bring your dog, I would leave him with a relative or friend he knows. You probably won't see him to much, and Disney doesn't allow pets at their resort.

I would also recommend flying. It maybe a little expensive, but so is gas.

I would stay on Disney Property.

Since you're planning to go to Disney World I would suggest Disney's Pop Century Resort. It is only about $82 per night and they give your transportation around the Walt Disney World Resort and to your hotel from Orlando International Airport free.

Here is Pop Century's Website:

Here are benefits of staying on Disney Property:

Use this website as well, it great for when you're planning or just need a Disney fix:

How much is a dog crate?

I want to get a crate for my dog to be in in the house when we're sleeping and stuff. I don't know what is the best kind to get. My dog is 45 lbs, and he is a little taller than knee high. I want a crate that's comfortable sized for him, but I don't really make much money, so I need it to be about 50-70 dollars or less. Also, where is the best place to get a crate? I usually shop at Pet Smart, but would it be cheaper to get it somewhere else?

Answer
PetSmart and Petco have reasonably-priced crates and can help you pick a size.

As a bonus, they're having a sale this weekend. PetSmart that has a 36" crate on sale for like $36.

What do I need for a Siberian Husky?

Malzy

I have never had a dog before and I'm very excited. An acquaintance is selling me his dog and I wanna know what I should get for him. He has his dog crate and feeding bowls and a shedding brush thing. He is a Siberian Husky and is 1 year old. What do I need? A collar, a leash, shew toys, a kong, whatever it is please list what you give your husky. Also, what kind of food should I give him. I know it should be 2 cups a day one in the morning and one in the evening but what kind of food brands do you suggest. When should I take him out for exercise and when do your dogs normally poop? Right after food? Half an hour after food? I need some beginner help.

Answer
Huskies certainly are not good first time dogs and I recommend not even THINKING about taking this dog unless you can put 4-5 hours aside of your day to run with it. These, along with Border Collies and German Shepherds, are some of the most active breeds out there. You can't just walk them an hour and be done. They need LOTS of mental stimulation and physical exercise.

They need about three 1 hour walks a day along with other activities like swimming, fetch, agility, obedience, and many other activities. They are VERY good escape artists and you usually can't trust them off-leash. Most Huskies will take off whenever they have a chance and usually do not have a very good recall.

They need to be brushed every single day for about an hour. They DO howl when they're lonely and your neighbors won't be very keen on that. Don't get it if you don't plan on keeping it for the rest of its life. You can't just lock them in a cage when they are excited and need exercise.

They need lots of training and rules for them to be stable.

Some things you will need are:
Collar
Leash
ID Tag
Crate
Bed
Grooming Supplies
Harness

For food, really, the best food you could feed your dog would be a Prey-Model-Raw (PMR) diet. No veggies, no fruit, no grains, and no dairy products. Just 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, and 5% other organs. It's fresh, healthy, natural, and species appropriate. Much better than preservative filled processed kibble from a plastic bag. The meat and organs has all the nutrients and the bone provides calcium and strengthens the stomach wall. If you're resourceful, feeding a raw diet is cheap and very affordable. I used to spend $200 a month on premium kibble and now I only spend $30 or less on PMR. The key is to find cheap meat from sales, scraps from hunters, culls and stillborns from farmers, old and freezer-burnt meat from friends, and you could post an ad on craigslist for unwanted raw meat. Any wild meat should be frozen for 3-4 weeks before feeding. Be sure to research this diet before feeding it! Good luck!!!!

For exercise, you need to walk them in the morning, afternoon, and evening. He is a bit older so you can take him outside about 1 hour after eating to poop/pee.

Good luck with your dog!!

What is the best cleaning method for throw up?

VerdeOjos

Gross, sorry. But one of my puppies is randomly throwing up, like once or twice a week (we have taken them to the vet and he says they probably just havee a tummy ache, are eating too fast, playing too hard, etc.) But the problem is they have more freedom cause they are older and I don't always know when or where they throw up until hours, or even days later. What is the best way to clean it up? I have tried the stuff that I used when I was house training them to spray on it, but it doesn't get the stain out... I am getting my carpets cleaned because we are all done with house training, but I can't be sure that throwing up is never gonna happen! Thank you !!!

Answer
I share your pain, sort of. I have a cat who does the same thing- vomits without warning and for no consistant reason. I called the vet and told them my cat was bulemic. (ha) She was placed on anti-nausea pills which helped tremendously, but was a management tool as well as a short term fix. A week after she stopped taking them, she began the vomiting again. (Maybe I shouldn't have asked her why she couldn't be more like her step-sister (not really)). I have no idea what is causing it, neither does the vet yet.

I *do* know that it is not uncommon for some dogs to be pukers after playing or after just eating. If s/he is eating too fast because s/he doesn't want the other dog(s) to eat her food, let him/her eat in a separate area so the other dogs cannot eat his/her food (or vice versa if s/he is eating fast in order to eat someone else's food). If you just need him/her to slow down during chow time, scatter the food- some in the bowl, some around the bowl on the floor. It helped my dogs to slow down when they had to play "52 kibble pick up".

Back to your main problem- cleaning the dog vomit. I would start with Nature's Miracle. It comes in a white plastic bottle with red lettering and red lid. (Find it at Petsmart, Petco, specialty pet supply stores, etc, and online at PetEdge and & Drs. Foster & Smith to name a few. You won't find it at Walmart, Target, or grocery store unless you have a really cool grocery like Bare Essentials or some other "granola" type market). I have used that for housesoiling problems and for vomit. It works great for me. Blot the "blat" up with a wet towel first. Then spray Nature's Miracle on it and follow the directions on the bottle. It has always worked better than Simple Solution (which is now called something else) for me. I have not had to clean carpets of the disgustingly florescant yellow "green grass puke" yet, so I can't say how it works on that. It certainly works for dog food vomit and empty stomach vomit.

Have you considered crating your dogs separately while you are away? (I realize they can puke the second you walk out of the room while you are home, and I am not suggesting that you imprison them.)

If I knew what kind of food you were feeding them, I might be able to offer more advice. I am sure that since you have gone to the vet, you have already explored that. Glad you have taken him/her to the vet. I am assuming you have a good vet that you trust. That's important. I hope your dog gets better and is not chronically bulemic like my cat. Peer pressure stinks, I guess. ;-)

How much does it cost monthly to keep a german shepherd dog?

Navid

Answer
As Rolls Royce salesmen are reputed to say:
"If you have to ask the cost, you can't afford it."

And as with cars. the first and last year are usually the most expensive!

Including fence-&-gate repairs to make it unlikely that she can escape, purchase price, petrol to collect her from 4½ hours away, feeding, vaccinations, micro chipping & licensing with the city council, replacing phone & power cables she'd chomped through, my pup cost me $2662.58 from 20 July to 28 December, which would average $532.52 a month - or $304.32 without the fencing & purchase price. I have not yet replaced the leash she pulled out of its bag and chomped into about 7 bits. Nor have I fixed or replaced the bagless vacuum-cleaner whose internal air passages got blocked when I tried to vacuum up the shreds of chomped "fire-wood" she left on the carpet in the hallway. I haven't counted the cost of replacing the shirt she damaged when she decided that the laundry out on the line was dry enough so leapt up, removed it from the clothes line, and brought it inside to me. Nor the irreplaceable magazines that she removed from my bookshelf & shredded, nor the fine for the library book she "discovered" in my bedroom and chomped a corner off. Nor have I counted the cost of the 2-years-old briskets waiting in my deep freezers since my previous GSD died - so far she has had only 2 bags of them, as they were extra large ones and so it took a while for her jaws to develop enough power to "destroy & swallow" them. Today, those bags would probably cost about $60. I have no idea what the electricity to power the freezers has cost during those 2 years.

Feeding costs are the most variable. Using a butcher is the most expensive. Using an abattoir is the cheapest except for having friendly hunters drop you their spare meat (especially duck hunters who clean last year's kill out of their freezer ready for the start of the new season). Dogs can survive on kibble mucks, but those are not the RAW meat that dogs do best on.

I already had security pens outside, a crate for when I have to shut her away while she's in the house, slip-chains & leashes, dishes for food & water, various balls that had arrived from neighbour's places and not been asked for, a brush & comb & anti-flea shampoo, nail clippers, old towels for rubbing her down when she's wet or dirty.

If you sensibly join a training club, you will need a dumbbell of the right size & weight to suit your pooch from 18 weeks old onwards. (My current pup likes a challenge, so she "finds" logs almost too big to fit in her mouth, a yard broom that is too big to fit through the doorway and along the passage until she allows it to revolve instead of it sticking out several feet each side of her mouth...)

If you are in a heart-worm area you WILL need to buy the preventative on-schedule.
You do NOT need to buy "treats". But you do need a source of cheap bones - chicken wings, oxtail or lamb-spines are suitable for the last-thing-at-night bone every pup should get daily. Do NOT buy the ox-leg bones that supermarkets want you to take away - they are far too dense for an adult dog, even; yes, dogs gnaw lovingly on them, hoping to reach the marrow inside (more than a level teaspoonful of marrow is too rich for the tummies of most dogs), but are more likely to shatter a tooth than shatter an ox-shin or ox-thigh.

How do I build a stall for a horse?

Baa_Baa_Bl

I want to build a dog kennel similar to a stall but not exact. This way my guys are protected from the elements and I can easily collect fecal matter and monitor their intake of water. They would only be in there during the day.
Sorry I see stable as the whole thing while a stall is just a stall within a stable. It will be a dog kennel with a similar build to keep all elements out.

Answer
if you are in the uk and building a permanent stall then you need planning permission. there are lots of different ways you could do the whole thing in brick or half brick/ half wood or all wood, then there are different eays to do the roof. you can buy ready made ones that are flat packed and you dont need permission for these as they dont have foundations and can be taken down easily.

Best product to use to neutralize dog urine smell from dog run?

luvslugg

We have a wood chip dog run and the urine smell is so bad that the dog is completely repulsed by it and won't go anywhere near it anymore. I am looking for something safe to use outdoors or possibly an organic / enzyme product. In the meantime I have been hosing it down and there are crazy mushrooms growing. I thought about another layer of woodchips...Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!
I have decided to take Sas1184's advice and rake the old mulch out. I am going to try this enzyme product called Odormute to treat the area then add fresh mulch. http://www.odormute.com/pet_index.html

Answer
I believe the wood chips underneath will get urine soaked and should probably be raked out and replaced. I met a dog in a kennel like this and I cant imagine how else you could do it as eventually the kennel became completely saturated. You are right about an enzyme product but that would get pricey with such a big area you might try Vinigar.

Can anyone answer a goat fencing question?

best chain link dog kennel image

Jamie

I will have two goats for about 5 months (Im in 4 H) My plan so far is to use the old chain link dog kennel to keep their shelter in and build their house around it. The question is...what fencing to use? I want something fairly inexpensive and most importantly will keep coyotes OUT. That is my biggest thing. Preferably someone with goat experience to answer

Answer
STRONGEST: use 2x4 horse fencing, with a hot wire on the outside top and bottom. ( keeps the 'yotes out) Put a third hot wire at nose level on the inside(keeps the goats in)
CHEAPER: wood 3x3s as posts, top and bottom 2x4 wood.rails. use poultry wire between top and bottom rails. Again- 3 rows of hot wire.

Put something for the goats to play 'king of the mountain' on in their pasture area.

What's the best place to buy a chain link dog kennel?

Mistress_T

I'm looking for an outdoor dog kennel for a medium-sized, fairly active dog. I seem to find the best prices online, but shipping usually kills the deal. It needs to be 5'-6' wide, 6' tall, and 10'-15' in length, and I need to be able to get a cover for it (it doesn't necessarily have to be included with the kennel though).

Can a dog get rabies by eating an animal infected with rabies?

My dog ate something in the backyard this morning. He wouldn't let me get near him to see what it was. He's never done this before (granted he's only a year and a half). It looked to me like a bunny or squirrel (I saw gray fur sticking out of his mouth) but when he picked it up I heard a squeaky noise like a toy so maybe it's a mouse. I'm wondering if it was infected with a disease, can it pass to him? I crated him so I could watch him more closely and see if I need to take him in or it nature will take its course. I can't find any animal remains in the backyard. What, if any, disease can be passed from one animal eating a diseased animal? Anyone have a similar experience and what to share?

Answer
It's highly unlikely. Rabies is NOT the big scare as people seem to think. It is a VERY rare disease and some parts of the country rarely ever see it. For an example, in my county there has NEVER been a case of rabies reported in history. In southern Indiana there are more cases but mostly in bats. In 10 years in Indiana there have only been a little over 700 cases and of those, only one dog, one horse, 3 skunks. The rest were bats. You can check with your counties health department on line to get the facts on rabies in your area.
Rabies vaccine by law for the most part is a huge scam. Please read the articles.
http://www.naturalrearing.com/articles/GuestAuthors/RABIESSCAM.html

http://www.dogsadversereactions.com/rabiesChallenge.html

The facts on rabies and the vaccine for rabies speak volumes about the disease. Rabies was never a disease that has been controlled by vaccines. Rabies generally kills animals with in 7 to 10 days so there is NO way it could ever spread to an epidemic level. Rabies is no less common now that BILLIONS of pets are being over vaccinated then it was before the vaccine came out. It is a self limiting disease meaning that animals die quickly and do not have the opportunity to caue major spread of the disease.
There are thousands of pets in my county getting rabies vaccines at 50 bucks a pop annually for a disease that has never been seen here. It's more about the money it brings to vets and drug makers and the county for officials then it is about the prevention of a disease that doesn't even exist here. Ridiculous!
All that said... I would not be concerned about your pet eating a dead animal and getting rabies.
There is conflicting info out there on whether or not it could even be spread by eating a dead animal. A fact we do know is that rabies disease can not survive or thrive in animals with a temperature of lower then 99 degrees. For example.. opposums do not carry rabies because of their body temperature being 98. So it only stands to reason that if an animal has been dead for a while it wouldn't have the temperature to support the disease. Yet I saw one web site that claimed in warm weather the disease would die with in 24 hours on a dead animal but they claim in winter months it could live in the animal for many months. This doesn't make a drop of sense! lol If the facts are the disease can't live under 99 degrees then how the hell is it going to live in freezing temps?
Anyway... don't worry about it. :)

How much extra does a puppy cost?

Kelly W

I want a puppy really bad and i want to know how much extra i would have to add onto the price. If i got a dog for 400$ would saving up 700 be enough?

Answer
The extra $300 is just about enough to get you set up with basic supplies, food, and first wellness check/puppy vacs.

A puppy's first year is VERY expensive ... between vet-visits and vaccinations, spay/neuter, and continuously replacing collars, leashes, (puppies grow), toys (puppies destroy them), bigger dog bed and crate ... you can see how it adds up quick.

If you adopt an adult dog from a rescue or shelter, the dog will already be up-to-date on shots, spayed or neutered, temperament-tested, probably housetrained, and perhaps will have had some obedience training. Definitely a money-saver in the long run.

How much do you spend on a dog in a year?

dog crates 300 on XL big dog crate: soft travel dog crate
dog crates 300 image
Q. How much money do you spend on a dog in a year including treats, food, collar, leash, vaccinations, etc.?
I want to get a dog and I want to know to make a good estimate.
I want to get a medium or large dog. I'm looking toward a Border Collie or a Golden Retriever girl. I want to buy less popular food, not the really expensive, high class stuff.
I don't want to spoil the puppy to death but I do want a decent amount of toys and treats for her. I would like to get her in a kennel if I could. I would want one leash and one collar that can be adjusted and could last for a good amount of years. A dental bone or two also.

Answer
First of all, It takes more than $300 to get started, whether you adopt or buy an animal from a breeder. Most animals are not up to date on all of their shots and are not nuetered or spayed. Shelters usually give the first round of shots (Distemper/Parvo/Coronavirus) and you are required to take the animal back for three more rounds of the vaccinations listed over a period of twelve weeks which will cost you anywhere from $15-$50 for each vaccination (for a grand total of $45-$150) and a rabies vaccination that will last one year which will cost about $30-$50. In addition you will have to pay a vet fee for that visit that could cost between $45 and $75 ( a grand total of $135-$225) depending on which vet you choose. You are now required in most states to have a chip put in your dog and register it through Homeagain, which is smart anyway because your dog get's lost you'll want to find it. That will cost you about $50- $100 depending on what services you choose. In addition to that, you will have to register your animal with the state/city where you live ($30-$60).If you get a puppy, you will have to buy a new collar about every three weeks because it will either grow out of it or chew it up, that will cost you about $20 every time you get a new one, and you could be doing that for about a year so that will cost you well over $300 for the year. Food will cost you too. If you feed your dog cheap food, which I don't recommend, you could get away with paying about $10 a month ($120 a year). But, you will pay a fortune in vet bills because your dog will not be healthy ( it would be like you eating Mc Donalds and nothing else for the rest of your life, don't believe me, watch the documentary "Supersize Me). So if you feed your dog the best (like I do), which would be something like Science Diet (properly balanced nutrition), you are going to spend anywhere from $40-$80 a month depending on the size of the dog you choose and how much it needs to eat. That will cost you $480-$960 a year, and dogs usually live about 15-18 years (you do the math). You will probably spend about $40 a month on bones and treats if you are going to spoil it the way you claim (that is another $480). And I'm sure you will need to have it's nails clipped every month which is about $20-$30 ($240-$360). and you need to allot for at least $1000 a year or more to pay for emergencies. Vets want upfront payment for emergency prcedures and even if you have Pet Insurance (about $100-$300 a year) you will still have to pay up front and receive reimbursement later for only a portion of the vet cost. If you get a puppy you will need a crate which is about $50 and puppy pads for training which is about $40-$80 a month because you will go through them fast. So your grand total will be between $2,050 and $3,865
But this is on the higher side, and will only be for the first year, then it will go down about1000 dollors, moaking a new grand total of around 1000 to 2000
I hope this helps :)

Can a dog live in a garden storage house?

You know the ones they sell at home depot,
like the big green garden storage houses, with doors, and windows,
It seems same as an outdoor dog kennel. Can an outdoor dog live in there with a smaller dog house in it? Instead of a dog kennel?
It looks like this
http://www.lancasterbarns.com/acatalog/garden-shed-399.jpg

Answer
I don't think a dog would be happy living in a house like that without a yard. Would you be happy inside a box all day with no company? They sell dog houses like Trigunmarksman said, but they have a doggy door that opens into a yard. If they weren't air conditioned/heated the animal might overheat, or get too cold in the winter. A dog kennel like this one might work, although of course it would be better with a bigger yard. It would keep a small dog safe from predators also. Why get a dog if you don't have the space for it to run and do natural doggy things? Unless it was an indoor dog in your house all the time.

Information on opening a dog kennel in MN?

angel m

I want to open a dog kennel in MN. I'm planning on doing only nails, bathing, drying and ear cleaning, I do not want to do hair cutting. I would also be doing boarding, dog walking....what do I need to start my business? I'm a HS graduate but would I need a diploma or certification? Which one would be better to have?

Answer
This will help with the business end of it. http://networthbb.tumblr.com/dogboardingminneapolis

If I brought my Newfoundland in to your place of business - how would you do their nails? We use a Dremel on their nails. What about those dogs that hate to have their nails done or their ears cleaned - you will need different size muzzles or an assistant to help. Will you have one of those huge stainless steel tubs (easily a thousand $$$, some cost more than that) Do you know that it takes at least 2 hours to bathe and dry a newfoundland? Will you have that kind of time to be able to run your kennel too? I am not even including the time it takes to brush the dog out before and after the bath.

Really, what I am saying is there is so much to consider when starting up this kind of business. Do you have property out of town where noise won't be an issue? Which vaccinations will you require besides rabies? Do you have a wholesale source for dog food for those people that don't bring food for their dogs? You will need a computer program for data entry (there are good kennel programs out there). Your indoor kennels will need to be air conditioned. I know of a Newfoundland that was left in an outdoor run at a boarding kennel that died of heat exhaustion during a heat wave in summer, how well do you know your breeds? You will need insurance, kennel runs (indoor and outdoor) a play area, etc. Are you willing to give up your weekends because you can't afford to hire (and TRAIN) qualified help?

These questions are just the tip of the iceberg, there are so many more things to consider. If you choose to start this business, start small and invest your money back into the business so you can grow.

Should I keep my cat away from others while she recovers from a spay?

dog crates medium size on Dog Crate (Medium Size) - $40 (Lexington, SC ) for Sale in Columbia ...
dog crates medium size image

Chitters

I borrowed a rather large medium sized dog crate to take her to the vet in. Huge, I know~ But this was the only carrier I had available to me so I jumped at it. All of my pet carriers were stolen out of my garage.

I was wondering if I should let her heal in it for a day or two since I have three other cats and three dogs in the house.

Answer
I would put her in a room by herself with the crate open so she can come out are her own will. Put a small amount of food and water in their with her because she is still going to be a little groggy. Make sure you put a litter box in their with her and I am not sure about getting a special kind of cat littler but I would ask the vet about that. Keep an eye on her stitches and her because you don't want her to pull her stitches out. I would even suggest putting a towell or a blanket in the crate with her. I would wait a few days before bringing her back in with the other animals or let her do it at her own will but keep an eye on them to make sure they don't rough house with her and hurt her. Hope I could help.

how cheap can i get a dog crate and dog bed?

MAYDAY!par

my dog is a fox terrier, a small to medium sized dog, (about 15 pounds?) and he needs a new dog crate and bed because he out grew his old ones. how much could these cost me at my local pet store?

Answer
Have you tried Craigslist.com or Ebay.com? second hand shops might have them..but a small crate can be about $15-20 at walmart about the same for a dog bed too.

I just came from a week's vacation (long overdue) from Singapore and I had to leave my dog, a 10 y/o mixed pom at home, w/ my dad and older brother. I found out when I got back that my dog refused to come down from the front of my room for the first two days, refused to eat for the first 2 days, refused to socialize for the whole week, she was aggressive to people who come near my room, and has been moping around the house, and sleeping at either the front of my room or the front of the house.

My dad told me that she was very sad for that whole week. And very territorial on my stuff - like my slippers, my room, my laundry basket etc.

I'll be going to Hong Kong in a couple of months and will be staying there for about a week. I am trying to train my dog to be less anxious and stressed out by not getting too overemotional around her whenever I leave the house - w/c was something I learned from a dog groomer here in YA that seemed to work (but then I was only gone for the weekend, not a whole week).

That was the longest time my dog and I were separated btw.

Should I get another dog for her? Is there some sort of special training that we can do? I don't want to get another dog just for her really, I want to get another dog when I know and am sure that I can take care of both of them properly - w/c I'm not really sure as I currently got my hands full w/ family responsibilities and my dog too.

Any suggestions?

Answer
In my opinion, two dogs aren't that hard, if you've got one already. I've got two beagles, and the only difficulty we're having is dominance.

You could try getting her a crate, and when you leave, take the shirt you wore to bed (make sure its an old t-shirt) and leave it in her crate.
it'll give her some sort of way to cope.

As for eating, try getting some of that gravy stuff to put on the food, it'll tingle her senses enough to get her interested.

One other thing you could do that my friend had some success with is ask a friend to look after her for a day a week. Then two, then four and so on, so she gets used to being around people other than you.

Again, this is all my opinion, I'm not a specialist. But these are things I've heard and seen work..

Goodluck!

Is my German Shepherd small for his age? I think so.. Picture here.?

Bunnypunch

Well, I live in Hong Kong and I got a German Shepherd Pure and a Tibetian Mastiff mega mix from another country. Now the country I bought it from apparently falls into the "category 3" countries and therefore, it's mandatory under law to keep it in a government kennel for 4 months for "quarantine" from the day it lands here.

It's been almost two months in the kennel now and currently my German Shepherd is 7 months old and Mastiff is 8. But I noticed that my German Shepherd is not as big as he's supposed to be.. or not think enough. I don't really care about my Mastiff mix because he stopped growing 4 months ago. I think he's terribly mixed up. But German Shepherds at that age are suppose to be thicker and maybe even taller than what he is right now. Even the kennel personal agree that he's smaller. Is it their fault?

Here are the pics~
http://s963.photobucket.com/albums/ae115/Away_ng/?action=view&current=IMG_1488.jpg
http://s963.photobucket.com/albums/ae115/Away_ng/?action=view&current=IMG_1484.jpg
http://s963.photobucket.com/albums/ae115/Away_ng/?action=view&current=IMG_1485.jpg

Well, here are the facts about how they treat him there (which I think is not right, considering his age):

- They feed him only twice a day when puppies are supposed to be fed light food 3-4 times a day.
- They tell me after 5 months dogs aren't puppies anymore when I've been told by vets that they are puppies until they stop growing.. which is about 14 months for height and then 4 more months for width.
- They feed my dogs adult food.
- They don't get exercise, bath or whatever unless I go visit them. But I'm working full-time and the only time I have got to visit them is once per two weeks. And the location is so bleeping far out in terms of geography because it's on the other side of where I live. I have to take a Cab... There is no direct route.

Maybe I'm wrong. I use 70% of my salary just paying for them every month. I don't want to see my dogs weak, you know. I'm gonna take some vitamin and protein supplements next time I go.

What do you think? Is his size okay? What do you think is the problem here? Any suggestion is helpful. Thanks.

Answer
I have a German Shepherd, so I relate to your worries. Unfortunately, you didn't include what his height is at the withers, nor how much he weighs.By the picture alone, I can tell his is skinny and a bit small, but it's hard to truly compare through a picture. Is this the red variety, by the way? I just hope he isn't crossed.
A 7 month old German Shepherd should weight around 55-65 pounds.
This sites posts a weight-age table for puppies
http://www.german-shepherd-lore.com/german-shepherd-growth-chart.html
At 7 months old, your GSD should be maybe 22-25 inches tall at the withers, depending on whether your is female or male.
General Info: Puppy food is essential. It contains a higher dosage of fats than adult food. This is necessary for a healthy digestive system and growth.
At this age, the dog should be fed no more than 3 times.
Dogs are puppies until they reach sexual maturation.
Don't feed protein supplements until your dog is mature enough or your vet recommends it. I think the problem here could be:
1. Genetics: Your dog COULD be a cross, even if he has papers stating otherwise. DNA testing is expensive, but it would eliminate all suspicions.
2. Runt: Your dog might be the runt of the litter, that is to say, that puppy that received that least amount of nourishment (milk). If the dog received scanty amounts of it, his growth would have been impaired compared to his brothers and sisters.
3. Diseases: Diseases that cause anemia; roundworms, tapeworms and any other parasite that interferes with the absorption of foods and nutrients
4. Exercise: Lack of exercise and a small crate will atrophy his muscles, joints and bones.
5. Food: Lacking nutrients needed by a puppy, such as when feeding adult dog food , especially of the cheap ones.

It could be a mix of all these things or some of them.
Hope you can fix this problem soon. The quicker you do this, the quicker the problem can be targeted and hopefully, reduce the impact later on. Talk to a vet about his weight and size, and see what he/she recommends.

the vaccines and i only needed to pay the 100 refundable dollars i dont know if should send the 100

this is the email i got in the morning..... the lady offering email is roselinewont@gmail.com
DEAR CLIENT

WE ARE CURRENTLY AT THE KANSAS CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WHERE WE HAD THE TRANSIT. YOUR FEMALE PUPPY ANITA IS NOT SO COMFORTABLE AT HER PRESENT STATE. WHEN WE SENT TO YOU YOUR PUPPIES FLIGHT DETAILS, YOUR FEMALE AND MALE PUPPY WERE TO FLY FROM THE WASHINGTON DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND TAKING A TRANSIT FLIGHT TO THE KANSAS CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND THEN TAKE A BREAK FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS AND LATER CONTINUE THEIR JOURNEY TO THE EL MONTE AIRPORT TO BE LATER TRANSPORTED TO YOUR HOME ADDRESS.
UNFORTUNATELY SIR/MADAM, DURING THE FLIGHT FROM THE WASHINGTON DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO THE KANSAS CITY AIRPORT, YOUR PUPPY ANITA CRIED SEVERALLY IN THE CRATE WE PUT HER IN FOR TRANSPORTATION TO YOUR HOME ADDRESS.
SOME OF OUR PET CARE GIVERS COMPLAINED SEVERALLY ABOUT ANITA'S REACTION TO THE CRATE SHE WAS PUT IN. MRS. BRACKSON, ONE OF OUR PET CARE GIVERS COMPLAINED THAT, BEFORE ANITA WAS PUT IN TO THE CRATE, SHE WAS REALLY A HAPPY PET BUT AFTER SHE WAS PUT IN THERE, SHE BECAME SO SO SAD. AND THIS CAN BE TREATING. AND IT CAN ENDANGER THE LIFE OF ANITA. AND WE ARE OUT TO CARE FOR YOUR PET AND THAT OF OTHERS.
SO SIR/MADAM, WHAT WE ARE SUGGESTING NOW IS THAT YOU HAVE TO RENT AN AIR CONDITIONAL CRATE FOR 100$,WHICH IS REFUNDABLE UPON THE ARRIVAL OF YOUR PUPPIES. WHEN ANITA WAS PUT IN ONE OF OUR AIR CONDITIONAL CRATES, SHE WAS SO HAPPY AND THEN WE REALIZED THAT THE OLD ANITA IS BACK.
SIR/MADAM, PLEASE WE ARE SORRY THAT WE CAN'T OFFER YOU THIS SERVICES FOR FREE. THAT IS OUR COMPANY POLICY. ANITA IS ALREADY HALF OF HER JOURNEY AND WE WILL ADVICE YOU DO ALL YOU CAN TO GET HER TO YOUR LOCATION AS WE CAN NOT HOLD HER FOR LONG. AS YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THE FEEDING FEE. NOW THE AGENCY IS DOING YOU A FAVOR OF PAYING YOUR PUPPY FEEDING FEE. BUT WE DO NOT THINK THE FAVOR MAY LAST LONGER.
PLEASE SIR/MADAM, WE ARE ALSO SUPPOSED TO ISSUE A PRESSURE VACCINE FOR BOTH PUPPIES,WITH EACH COSTING 50$ GIVING A TOTAL OF 100$ WHICH IS NON REFUNDABLE .OTHER PETS THAT TOOK THIS FLIGHT ALSO NEED TO TAKE THIS VACCINES TO ENSURE A SAFE FLIGHT. CONSIDERING THE LIFE OF YOUR PUPPIES AT THE MOMENT, WE CAN'T GO AHEAD TO DELIVER THEM AS ANYTHING MAY HAPPEN. WE CANNOT GO FURTHER TO DELIVER THE PETS EXCEPT THE SITUATION IS TREATED WITHIN THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE TIME.THIS AGENCY HAS HAD A SERIES OF MISHAPS WITH THE PETS OF OUR CLIENTS JUST BECAUSE THEY REFUSED TO PAY THE MONEY FOR A RENTAL CRATE.
NOTE THAT THIS SUM OF MONEY YOU PAY FOR THE RENTAL OF YOUR AIR CONDITIONAL CRATE FOR YOUR PUPPY AND IT IS REFUNDABLE. IF YOU WISH TO RENT IT, IT WILL COST YOU $100 WHICH IS REFUNDABLE TO YOU AND THE CRATE WILL BE TAKEN AWAY BY OUR PET CARRIERS WHO WILL DELIVER YOUR PUPPIES... OR YOU EITHER BUY IT WHICH WILL COST YOU $300. EITHER WAYS YOU CHOOSE,. IS THE ONLY WAY BOTH PUPPIES ARE GOING TO LEAVE THE KANSAS CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. AT THE MOMENT YOUR PUPPIES ARE AT THE TRANSIT AIRPORT. SO THEY JUST HAVE SOME FEW HOURS AWAY FROM YOU.
AS SOON AS YOU MAKE THE PAYMENT TO OUR SUB-BRANCH IN BRITISH CAMEROON. TO THE MANAGER (Mr. EKANE DERICK) OVER THERE. HE WILL THEN NOTIFY US AGAIN THEN YOU CAN BE REST ASSURED THAT YOUR PUPPIES WILL BE WITH YOU IN SOME FEW HOURS.
AS SOONEST AS YOU MAKE THE PAYMENT EMAIL US WITH THE MTCN NUMBERS AGAIN AS YOU LASTLY DID. STILL FOLLOW THE SAME PROCEDURE AND OUR COMPANY ADVICE WHICH WE GIVE TO OUR CLIENTS. THE ADVICE OF SEND IT TO A FRIEND OR A RELATIVE SO THEY WOULDN'T CHARGE YOU HIGH AS WE LASTLY TOLD YOU.
PLEASE THE EARLIER YOU MAKE IT, THE BETTER AND FASTER WILL YOU HAVE YOUR PUPPIES AT YOUR RESIDENCE. SO WE SHALL ADVICE YOU TO DO THE PAYMENT LATEST 10:15 AM THIS MORNING SO EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE PROCESSED.

* LASTLY WE ARE HERE TO TAKE VERY GOOD C

Answer
Yes, it's a common scam. Report this ASAP to the FBI's IC3 if you've already lost money http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
Did you even call the Kansas City airport General Information number to see if there were any dogs there http://www.flykci.com/ContactUs/PublicNumbers/Index.htm or anyone by that name working at the airport? There are NO puppies. You will never get anything

That rosalinewont@gmail.com address has already been reported as a scam on an email blacklist site - same exact email you received:
http://blacklistedemails.blogspot.com/2010/07/cameroon-puppy-scam-roselinewontgmailco.html
Here she is still advertising the same puppies but says she is in San Francisco http://www.cathaylist.com/usa/1/posts/1-Pets/5-Dogs-and-Puppies/313391-Adorable-Yorkshire-Puppies-For-Free-Adoption.html
Here she is on another site advertising the same puppies but says they are in Los Angeles http://www.kugli.com/Classified_Ads/adid/448292/adtitle/Absolute_gogeous_Yorkie_puppy_for_free_adoption/

Email one of her other ads from a different address with a different name asking if the puppies are still available and you'll get the same exact response she already sent you. Then you'll know for sure this is a scam

How do you get dog crates in Ireland?

dog crates at petco image

Hi my name is Robert and was wondering if anybody knew if somebody sells dog crates in Ireland or Northern Ireland they are a big thing in America and have had no look looking for them my girlfriend is setting up dog kennel's and she would really like to get them but there is none were we have looked thank you for your time and help

Answer
Do you have petstores there? Petco and Petsmart sells them.
they may be able to ship... i dont know though since your out of country..

If not you could make one... not hard to do 3 sides and a door

How big should the crate be when crate training?

Humble

I bought a collapsible crate from petco for our new jack russle puppy. I bought it big enough so it will fit him comfortably as an adult dog as well. Was that a mistake? I ask because I was told in order to potty train a puppy using the crate training method the crate needs to be just big enough for them to lay down in. Is that true?

Any potty training tips because I don't really want to buy a smaller crate at this point.
Thanks you guys! It's our first dog and it was seriously ticking me off he kept going potty in his crate :P I'll block off half of it... The answer was so simple I feel like a retard.
OMG (laughing at myself) The extra wire thingy! (slaps my forehead) it was the DIVIDER! hahaha

Answer
The crate should be big enough for him to stand up and lay down. They should not have room to really stretch out or to walk around. If they can poo in one corner and lay down in another IT'S TOO BIG. Once the pup had learned, he can be moved up to a crate that is twice his size.
Make sure it is a wire crate with tons of ventelation. You can make your dog sick if he gets to hot. (upset tummy)
**my pup learned NO in less than 10 minutes***
Best way to teach a dog NO is to put a handful food on the ground in between you and the pup. When he goes for the food, cover it with you hand and say NO. When he leaves it alone, give him ONE pellet of the food from A DIFFERENT place. Don't give it to him from the pile. That teaches him it was ok to eat from that pile.
Never spend too long on one lesson. They get REALLY bored really quick. 10 mins at most. Come back to it in an hour if you have to.
Never repremand for them not learning or getting something wrong. They have to have a BIG learning curve!
Shoving your dogs face in the poo they left on your floor will only get you vet bills from your dogs nose getting infected.
When they are in trouble... yelling is enough. They understand when you are over them screaming at them. Don't make it worse by hitting them.
END ON A GOOD NOTE!! If after a couple good tries stop and play with them. They will not listen once they get bored.
LOVE THEM!!!

Problem with Dogs...Please read description!?

Rachel

I've got some problems with my two dogs. My dogs have separation anxiety. Whenever I leave the room, for a few examples...When I leave the house, when I take a shower, when I go to sleep, when I go on the computer and close the door, when I leave the house for 15 minutes, and once when I was standing outside the house on the other side of the door.
I've recorded them on tape a few times to see how long it takes before they get into the trash and to see which dog does what. It only takes 2-5 minutes for my first dog to get into the trash and kitty litter. Then, my second dog comes along in another 5 minutes and goes through the trash that is already out and gets into the kitty litter.
They get into the trash, they get into the kitty litter, and I'm fearing they will start tearing up furniture because they've done it before. The landlord forbids people to leave dogs outside without supervision. I would crate train them, but I have no room for the crates (They are BIG dogs and would need really BIG crates and I just don't have the room). I would stick them in rooms while I leave, but all the rooms I have are occupied. I thought about telling them "no" every time they got into the trash or kitty litter, but I'm NEVER around when they do get into the trash or kitty litter. My trashcan is not in a cupboard that I can close or lock and I have no pantry to stick it in. I've thought about gating in the kitty litter so that they can't get into it, but the only kind of gate that can fit is one that is an "L" shape or curve with screws on both sides that can go into a wall. I found one, but itâs near $300 and I cannot afford it right now.
I will soon start walking them in the morning and evening in hopes that it will help some. They also get plenty of exercise when I take them to the dog park for an hour or so every day when I get home. Please help with any suggestions you may have.
If it helps, they are an Akita/German Shepherd and a Border Collie/Great Pyrenees.

Answer
You say you have no room for crates! Then how do you believe you have room for two large dogs? The crate is supposed to be just big enough for the dog to turn around and lie down in. And I have a link below for a crate my neighbor uses that's 40"x27"x30" and is for large breed dogs. This one costs ONLY $119. I don't recommend the wire crates for YOUR dogs as they will rip that kind of crate apart. You can use the crate as end tables on either side of your couch or your bed, if room is at a premium. You didn't tell us what your square footage is and if you're in a house or an apartment and how many rooms you have, so it's hard to know where else to recommend putting these crates.

You didn't give us enough information to help you better.
How old is each dog?
What sex is each dog?
Are the dogs intact or neutered?
How old were they when you got them & how long have you had them?
How long have these problems been going on?
Which dog gets into trouble FIRST? Which one comes later?

I have an 8mo old pup who jumps on the door when I go outside. It's puppy impatience and I'm working on training him to be calmer. You don't say anything that indicates you've made any effort to train these dogs.

If you recorded them, why didn't you upload your videos to YouTube and give us a link so we could SEE what's happening? That would help.

When my cats were inside the house, I put a baby gate up in the door to the bathroom and the litter box was inside the bathroom so the cats could get to it and the dogs could not . The other option is to put the kitty litter box inside a small wire crate that's too small for the dogs to get inside, but the cat can come and go as needed.

Since they get into the trash, take your trash out when you go out, as someone else recommended.

They WILL start tearing up your furniture because they are untrained and under exercised and terribly bored. Akitas, GSD's and BC's are ALL VERY HIGH ENERGY breeds. Only the pyr can be quite for prolongued periods of time and are medium energy dogs.... so your dogs parentage indicates they need a LOT of exercise. Training in carting (if they're old enough) or agility training would help. You needed to learn about these breeds BEFORE you got these dogs to make sure you were the right owner for them who would give them proper discipline and guidance and adequate exercise to make them happy and calm.

Cripes... you duplicates most of your message twice. That's awkward.
If you join the group below, you can get some help from pyr owners many of whom know some of those other breeds as well.

You describe an L shaped gate which is the impossible dream, and I have NO idea where you would put that. You didn't upload a photo of your floor plan to clarify that comment so it makes NO sense. If you gate your bathroom for the cat's litter box, you should be able to use a regular epansion gate like I use. If you put the litter box inside a wire crate, that also solves that problem.

If these dogs are pups, this kind of disruptive activity is often part of puppy over-curiosity. If they are adults, then you have a more serious problem and should contact either Cesar Millan or Victoria Stillwell and ask to be on one of their programs. I think they do the behavior training free maybe if your dog is going to be on the show. -!-

can I fix my dog?

Brand New

I have a very stubborn German Shepard/Border Collie Mix male dog! and I can't train him to save my life. in all honesty I don't care if he sits on demand and what not but I have been trying to teach him like crazy because he has started to show some aggressive behaviors! and I can't figure out what his trigger is (he has snaped at 3 people over the last year and a half and all of them were being nice to him and the most recent one I know he was fond of! the only thing I can link them together with is baby talk "OOOHHH ROCKY" and they were all touching him at the time. and what's weird is that he seems to know it was wrong because he mopes around for days after each one. the only thing is my Fiance and I want to start having kids next year and I am afraid to have him around people! I got him a crate and he seems okay sleeping in it. He's so good 95% of the time and has stopped barking at so many people (like roofers and kids climbing the fence) but I need more help training him! any
thing will help! I can't stand the thought of putting him down but am reaching the end of my rope. He loves Dogs (like at the Dog park he is okay with everyone there) but if say my fiance and I do the whole piggy back thing or wrestle it freaks him out! and he doesn't like people coming to our house or on the leash but if he gets out and can run free he loves everyone! so he's not just aggressive for the sake of being aggressive he even shares his food with our much smaller welsh terrier. I plan on consulting a dog behavioralist as soon as I get the money in about a month but until then I need something has anyone else had this problem or know how to train particularly protective and stubborn dogs?
sorry for the confusion he has been nutered and I absoultly don't want to put him down! that is what I am trying to avoid! I tried taking him in to a no kill shelter and they refused him and the regular one said they wouldn't even try before putting him down. and nobody I know will take him! this is my last resort. as for the pining thing we have tried that it only works for 15 or so minutes once the scenery changes he's back to normal (like if we do it on a walk he's good for the rest of that walk only!) he didn't used to be like this and I know it's my fault I just want to fix the behaivor!

Answer
Glad you're going to a behaviorist in the next month. I suspect the evaluation will say your dog has fear aggression and you are NOT Alpha Pack Leader, which IS YOUR JOB!

Both GSD and BC are FABULOUS TRAINABLE DOGS! Unless your dog has something like a brain tumor, these breeds are well known for being SMART and among the fastest and easiest to train. They were BRED to be trainable and to work with a human handler.

SO... the problem is you! Sorry... but it's a fact.
If YOU cannot train your dog, then you are NOT Alpha Pack Leader. Alpha Pack Leader is always listened to by the dogs in the pack. The Pack Leader's wishes MUST be listened to and followed! That's the law of the pack.

I'll give you links to 2 excellent websites to learn how to be Alpha Pack Leader. READ them! LEARN & DO what they tell you.

I'll give you 3 excellent websites that give you insights into dog behavior. READ them! Learn to understand your dog.

His trigger is that he's got the heavy job of being the Pack Leader, so, instead of enjoying just being a dog, he has the responsibility of controlling everything around the pack. If in his doggie mind, someone's actions are a potential threat, his response is to lunge to bite. He's trying to protect you. He's trying to ward off perceived threats to himself as well.

If you have the right channels, watch the shows "It's Me or the Dog" with Victoria Stillwell, and The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. What I've learned from watching them is the fact that the majority of major dog control problems come from the fact that the owner is NOT the Pack Leader. This always leads to the WORST offenders and LEAST socialized dogs

AND ... as another responder said... if he's intact, get him neutered... That's a must

Addendum: both GSD and BC are high energy dogs. They need a JOB to do, and if you haven't given him a job, he's selected guarding YOU as his job. You need to give him more exercise... he needs a LOT of running and a LOT of exercise. I suspect you don't give him enough exercise to tire him out and challenge and excite him. That is another part of the problem.

And ignore the comment by "Petsitter" who shouldn't be a petsitter with that uneducated view of dogs. -!-

Any opinions on what might be happening with this gang moving in East Los Angeles?

Jaun Ramos

The Riverdale Gang is a New York/Cleavland based gang. They are hired hands of the Mafia. The Armenians who have been apart of this in LA are famous working dogs for the Odessa crime outfit. This is a sign that the Italians and Russians are trying to push out the Mexicans.

In New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ontario, Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois the crime is run differently. In these areas the Calabrese's, Genovese's, Mazzini's, and a group of former soviet block gangs have a board. There are 24 members, 6 voting members, and chairman.

These organized crime organizations have one rule we handle the money you do the work. They do this by hiring an "angency" normally a motor cycle club. They have them clean the money using front investments and companies. They have their contractor hire a subcontractor i.e. the fall guys who normally get whacked or put in prison. They have normally 10 to 12 subcontractors in a city and 2 to 3 contractors who don't know enough of the puzzle to talk when they go down.

These guy normally take more then the $40,000 to $60,000 that they offer as pay and the board orders a "extermenator" to come in and take them out. That is why the murder rate in these cities changes so much year to year. They hire professionals often from mid west or South America and clean house. These gangs are no match for their grenades and heavy fire power not to mention training.

The only good news is if this is happening they are much cleaner running, the mob does not like bad press. They will also have less drug running and only allow a few smaller operations because Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky are their only drug green zones they made for the Russians concerning their drug business. They can still transport though. If there are people in this area who deal, produce, or sell drugs they might want to do business else where. Just ask the crips from youngstown oh thats right there all gone.

Answer
I left the LAPD to work in Dayton Ohio thinking it would be easier. The truth is until this news I wanted to go back. These boys are how I found out they only play gang in East LA. They will kill off all of the local gang leaders and replace theM. They did it in Cincinnati. These guys are just bullet proof. You try to start a case sue and bribe officials. The courts here work for them!

How do I know if they are a Puppy Mill or not?

My family and I are trying to find a good dog breeder. We've found some close by, but don't know if they are a puppy mill or not. How would we find that out or find a good breeder?

Answer
First, youi likely won't be invited to look at a puppy mill. They sell through pet shops. You are looking to avoid back yard breeders.

Google the name of the breed + club to find the national breed club. Then find the nearest local club. Breeders who are members of breed clubs are generally checked out pretty carefully. Then go and see the facility. They will likely be in a kennel situation, so here are some things to look for: is it clean, are the kennels (not a cage or crate but a long kennel) roomy enough to the puppies can run and play, do the dogs look healthy and well cared for, is the mother dog friendly and will she let you handle the puppies.

Things to ask: Do they offer a health guarantee, will they take back the dog if you are not able to keep it and is that in their contract, do they health test their breeding stock?

If any of the answers are "no" look elsewhere.

What do you need for a new dog and whats the cost?

hihihihihi

I'm getting a new dog(my first one) and i wanna know what I need and how much it costs.Thx in advance

Answer
New Puppy Checklist:
Collar/Leash
Crate
Food
Treat (one kind for now)
ID Tag
Food Bowl
Water Bowl
Carpet Cleaner
Books (General Breed, Training, etc)
Toys

You'll also need a vet check within the week (preferably that day or the following day of getting the dog.) Just to make sure the dog doesn't have worms, fleas, and to set up a shot schedule.

A ballpark amount for all supplies: $200
A ballpark amount for vet check: $200
(Based on what i spent for my dog.)

Monthly fees will always be there - food, flea/tick prevention, heart worm prevention: about $150 depending on size of dog. You can also buy in bulk.
Emergency fees - illness or injury - can always arise, so please make sure you have some money saved up. I've heard of fees being as low as $400 and as high as $5,000 or more depending on what was needed testing and treatment wise.
Grooming fees are dependent on the dog. I pay about $60 for my dog to be trimmed every four-five months. Short haired dogs need less.

May also want to look into joining a group training session at your local kennel club - they're great for socialization and you get tips from a professional on training and any possible behavior issues.

How do you ship a horse across the world? How much would it cost to ship a horse from California to England?

Just wondering. Is it like dangerous to ship horses?? Are they on an airplane or boat?

Answer
From the U.S., horses are usually flown from Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Lexington, New York or sent via trailer to Canada and flown from there. They are loaded into an aluminum crate that is very similar to a straight load horse trailer or a semi-trailer. Each crate can hold three horses so shipping three at a time is the most economical method. A handler usually travels in the crate with them in the area in front that would be the manger in a walk-through two-horse trailer or the space between rows in a semi-trailer. Once they're loaded the crate is placed in the cargo area of a plane using a fork-lift. The previous poster is totally wrong about quarantine in the UK - even dogs no longer do 6 months under the PETS scheme. The horse usually does about a month's quarantine at an approved facility in the US prior to shipping, documents are then issued and the horse is transported to the UK. The horse has to have a passport to enter the UK which is a recent thing. Post transport quarantine in the UK is for up to a month at an approved facility. The total cost just for transportation, quarantine, paperwork etc is around $10,000 plus the cost of the horse.

Shipping a puppy from Nebraska to Houston Hobby Airport?

RM

Does anyone know where in the Houston Hobby airport your pick up shipped animals and the process?

Answer
Call the specific airline and ask for their policies. You might also be able to look them up online. When I shipped a dachshund through Hobby years ago, he arrived on the baggage line (in his crate). Watch the weather though; they won't fly them if its too hot (specific temps are given in the regulations, it can vary depending on the airline) and it can't be too hot anywhere the plane touches down. Look for a direct flight preferably counter to counter. Bring your photo I.D. a secondary form of identification and be at the airport at least an hour before the plane is due to land. Again depending on the airline, they may hold your pup until he recovers from the flight. When you arrive at the airport, go to the baggage counter, tell them you're waiting on a dog and if your puppy doesn't show up ask someone to go check for you in person. Keep asking until they do it. Bring some cleanup supplies, wipes and towels, a leash, collar and plenty of water.

Chain link fencing for dog kennel- can you buy and attach bottom pipe separatley?

best wire dog kennel on Dog Kennel photo

Looking for a dog kennel, had an offer for some cheap chain link fencing BUT it has no 'pole' on the bottom, concerned dogs would just push it out. anything you can buy separately to keep it solid along the bottom to keep dogs from pushing it out?

Answer
You can buy galvanized pipe, but it should be put on with proper fixtures on the bottom of the upright, you can also stretch air line cable along the bottom weaving it in and out every two foot or so, either way if your dogs like to dig they can still get out, probably the cheapest and simplest solution is to buy chicken wire and dig a trench under the fence to the inside of the run and bury it, you can wire a foot or so of the chicken wire to the bottom of the fence then take it thru the bottom on the fence at least two foot and bury....depending on what size run you are putting in it might be easier to put a regular kennel run up, if you want to do it right check with Crest Line Kennel Runs..

Can you keep a chinchilla in a large dog kennel?

Megan A

I'm getting two chinchillas tomorrow and I really don't want to pay for a 70 dollar cage when I can get a better one online, So i was wondering can they temporarily stay in a dog kennel that's pretty big?

Answer
Purchase the right cage. Your cage needs to be large enough to accommodate your chinchilla and in a relatively quiet room. For chinchillas, the bigger the cage, the better. They like to run around and bounce off cage walls as well as hop small platforms.

Make sure your cage is chin-proof. No hard plastics or soft plastics and only chinchilla-safe wood in the cage. Chinchillas need to chew and will chew on anything and everything they can. They can nibble through wood without a problem.

Everyone starts with a small cage and, within a year or two, upgrades to something bigger and nicer. Why not take the plunge right away and save yourself the expense of purchasing two cages? By getting a cage you will be happy with forever you will save yourself the annual search for "the perfect cage".

Of course, if you REALLY want to save money you can build your own cage. This might be a good choice anyway, as it's the only way you might achieve several features that you want.

HOW TO DO IT

So you need a sturdy metal cage. If you're keeping adults 1 inch gaps are fine. If you are planning on breeding you'll need no larger than 1 inch by 1/2 inch spacing between the bars. Wooden or wire (or some unchewable surface) are a must for shelves. Ramps should be eliminated as they present an unnecessary hazard. You don't need a very large cage, especially if you plan on letting your chinchilla our for frequent exercise. The bottom may be solid or wire, but if it is wire give your chinchilla a piece of wood to rest their paws on.
The Ferret Nation cage is easily adaptable for the chinchilla with some custom pans. It can be divided into two separate cages or provide one huge cage. The cage should cost about $175 plus shipping, and you can get the custom pans for a reasonable price from Bass Equipment. The ramps are removable and you can upgrade afterwards to wooden shelves (purchased separately).

This is probably the most popular choice among knowledgeable chinchilla owners, as it is an attractive cage that will last a very long time.

Another solid choice is a chinchilla cage from Quality Cage. These cages come with wooden shelves, and they have cages of several sizes. This is a cage you would also be happy with, and you may well be getting a wheel from Quality Cage anyway.

You might find a similar cage locally, although that seems more and more difficult as the pet stores seem to be moving more to online sales. Smaller metal cages will be available, but I strongly urge you to carefully consider whether you will be happy with this cage in six months or a year. Of course, you should also consider the space you have, for these cages can run rather large (perfect for that big exercise wheel!)

You may be considering a more commercial cage if you are becoming a breeder.

If you can find the right cage, and you're a little handy, you also have the option to build a cage.

hoped i helped, if u ask me this is the fastest ans easiest and cheapest way for your solution.. this would help u alot. good luck :::::::
