Does this dog look like a healthy Maltese puppy? (Link included)?

invisible.

I am looking into buying a Maltese puppy and I have been corresponding with this person and will be going to their house on Sunday to pick him up if all goes according to plan. I specifically asked to pick him up at their home so I could see the environment and all. I think 6 weeks is a little young to be separated from its mother, but that wasn't really my choice. He looks bathed and taken care of to me, but I'm not an experienced dog buyer so I would like a little help. I have asked for photos of the parents, but they said I could see the mother when I came to pick the puppy up. Should I insist or not be worried? Everything seems legitimate to me other than that... Anyway, I am wondering if he looks to have a good coat and the ad seems okay to you. Thanks, here is the link: http://houston.ebayclassifieds.com/dogs-puppies/missouri-city/maltese-male-puppy-500-ckc/?ad=18046800
I would like to know if 500$ would be a reasonable price for a HEALTHY dog, if this puppy looks as if he would be unhealthy. What price range should I expect? Is 500$ actually reasonable with a more reputable seller? I did not know about the AKC classifieds until reading someone's answers until this moment.

Thank you all for the help so far.

Answer
It says he is 'crate trained', which means he has been away from his mother WAY too long already. At 6 weeks old he should still be sleeping with his mother and littermates. He is CKC registered which means he is not from tested stock since they don't list any testing done and most CKC dogs are dogs that can't get AKC registration. Many CKC dogs are dogs that have been thrown out of AKC for improper paperwork or breeding practices.
I would not take this puppy. At 6 weeks he is at risk for a serious bout of hypoglycemia since he has already been under undue stress at a VERY young age.
Go to the AKC website; look up Maltese under the Breeds tab and then go to the National club website. Find a reputable breeder who can sell. you a healthy, happy puppy that comes to you ready to be loved and trained.

Want to travel with German Shepard dog,,,,?

CandyCane

i cant take him on the plane with me cuz he's over 20 lbs. they wont let me put him in cargo because the flight is from dc to phoenix and it could get to hot. im going to visit family in dc and i really want to take him. is there any way i can get him over there or am i just going to have to take him to doggie day care?

Answer
Continental cargo: 800-575-3335...they ship dogs all year. They have kennels in Houston & Newark where they can "overnight" the dog if necessary so you can be there to meet him. Or just schedule yourself on the same flight. Up to 100 pounds (dog + crate) is $300.00 plus taxes & fuel surcharges....101-150 lbs is $359.00 plus tax & surcharges. I ship GSD's with them all year. He'll be fine. If flying stresses him out, it's time to haul him back to the breeder and demand he give you a REAL GSD.

How do you ship a horse across the world? How much would it cost to ship a horse from California to England?

Just wondering. Is it like dangerous to ship horses?? Are they on an airplane or boat?

Answer
From the U.S., horses are usually flown from Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Lexington, New York or sent via trailer to Canada and flown from there. They are loaded into an aluminum crate that is very similar to a straight load horse trailer or a semi-trailer. Each crate can hold three horses so shipping three at a time is the most economical method. A handler usually travels in the crate with them in the area in front that would be the manger in a walk-through two-horse trailer or the space between rows in a semi-trailer. Once they're loaded the crate is placed in the cargo area of a plane using a fork-lift. The previous poster is totally wrong about quarantine in the UK - even dogs no longer do 6 months under the PETS scheme. The horse usually does about a month's quarantine at an approved facility in the US prior to shipping, documents are then issued and the horse is transported to the UK. The horse has to have a passport to enter the UK which is a recent thing. Post transport quarantine in the UK is for up to a month at an approved facility. The total cost just for transportation, quarantine, paperwork etc is around $10,000 plus the cost of the horse.

Shipping a puppy from Nebraska to Houston Hobby Airport?

RM

Does anyone know where in the Houston Hobby airport your pick up shipped animals and the process?

Answer
Call the specific airline and ask for their policies. You might also be able to look them up online. When I shipped a dachshund through Hobby years ago, he arrived on the baggage line (in his crate). Watch the weather though; they won't fly them if its too hot (specific temps are given in the regulations, it can vary depending on the airline) and it can't be too hot anywhere the plane touches down. Look for a direct flight preferably counter to counter. Bring your photo I.D. a secondary form of identification and be at the airport at least an hour before the plane is due to land. Again depending on the airline, they may hold your pup until he recovers from the flight. When you arrive at the airport, go to the baggage counter, tell them you're waiting on a dog and if your puppy doesn't show up ask someone to go check for you in person. Keep asking until they do it. Bring some cleanup supplies, wipes and towels, a leash, collar and plenty of water.

When are puppies ready to be introduced to a leash?

I recently bought a yellow lab puppy which will be 8 weeks on 6-3. I was wondering if it is too early to introduce him to walking on a leash around the block. I tried yesterday and kind of pulled him down the road a few feet and then he seemed to walk alittle bit. I just don't know if this is too early. I also wanted to find out when my puppy should be introduced to crate training. We have put him in his crate real late at night and he still has accidents, which is expected, but when will he be able to use his crate and not have accidents? Any input would be great especially people who also have a Lab.

Answer
We started to put a leash on our dogs, I have 3 shih tzus, at a few months of age just to get them used to it. We have taken them to Petsmart and Petco hundreds of times to socialize them. They love it. Everyong love to pet them and in turn they are extremely friendly. We also have take them to various dog functions around Houston and they love the interaction with other dogs. As soon as they see their leashes, they go balistic. They can't wait to get them on and go in the car. You have to be patient as a leash and collar is new and takes time getting used to it.

How do you fly a dog across the country, alone?

ty97

My brother needs to ship his dog from WV to TX, but my brother won't be flying. We know how he can get the dog home when he flies with him, but how do we 'ship' the dog?

Answer
If you contact the shipping departments of various airlines, they can help you. Contenental is a good one with shipping -- you can check the information on their website as that will give you an idea as to what is expected. Basically they have to have a veterinary health certificate within thirty days of shipping, they need to have a crate that the airlines like the size of -- one large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in - often you can buy them from the airlines but Walmart has them too and a little cheaper I think. You set up for who is going to recieve the dog - there has to be someone designated to recieve the dog. You have to set all this up and then get the dog to the shipping area of the airport fairly early before the flight - some of the airlines the recieving party can pick them up at the terminal and others they need to go to the cargo area. I can't recall but I think the dogs I have gotten in at the Dallas, San Antonio and Houston airports, I have usually gone to the cargo areas except with Delta - they had the dog at the office area in the terminal - they will be able to let you know about that though prior to shipping. It is more expensive shipping without being an accompanying dog so, depending upon size, he needs to check on cost and be ready to pay for it - no CODs or anything like that. There are usually restrictions with regards to weather/temperatures but now isn't a bad time and Contenental supposedly doesn't have these restrictions because they have climate controlled areas they keep the live animals - but check on it beforehand. Try to get straight through flights as well so that there isn't any mix up changing planes in Tinbucktoo or something. If he can drive to a large airport that has a straight through flight, or at least no change of planes but with a short stop somewhere, and ship to a large airport in TX with no changes - I think Houston is a primary for Continental, Dallas for American (wasn't terribly pleased with them) and can't remember San Antonio - maybe Continental too but certain flights I think... anyway, the shipping agents are usually VERY helpful with this so calling and talking to them is a good idea. Good luck!

BTW, I have never had to tranqualize a dog to ship them and wouldn't recommend it -- there is no one in the cargo area of the plane to watch and if they get into trouble with the tranquelizer, it could be dangerous. They will usually settle down in the crate, particularly if they are crate trained prior to shipping. I have just heard too many horror stories with tranquilizing animals for shipment.
