Has anyone put their dog in quarantine in another country?

tamla32

My husband is thinking about taking a job in Australia for 2 years. I am so worried about my dog. She is so loving. I want to know what happens to them if we can not see her in quarantine because she is too far away. Is she going to be abuse and neglected. We do not crate her. So how is this going to affect her. Will they feed her right or give her medication for her hips. Is she going to have any contact with other dogs. I say no job is worth putting her though this. Am I just over protective? She brings us so much joy in our lives.

Answer
it is only 30 days and while i can not comment on australian quarantine, before the pet passport i was going to move to england and the quarantine was 6 months but my dog would have gone to a family not a kennel ... she would have had no contact with anyone but the family for six months ... to me that was too long but 30 days is not too harsh ...

dog crates by kong image

tech10

she is a pitbull, and i have a padlock on the dog crate,but that does'nt help,wat do i do.

Answer
Make the crate a better experience for her. Maybe she's feeling separation anxiety but dogs by nature are den animals, they like to have dens or a safe place. Throw treats in there all the time so she goes in there looking for treats, never force her in. Put her in there for short periods of time and sit there with her, talk to her, put in an item of your clothing to remind her of you. Feed her in there so she associates it as a good place. Give her kongs in there. Is it too big or too small? Maybe she's uncomfortable. It might take a while for her to really get comfortable in there, how old is she? Or why do you put her in the crate? Maybe she needs more exercise? If she's old enough I might suggest putting her somewhere else until she really sees the crate as a happy place.

Is it ok to leave my dogs in their crates?

jacqueline

I have a 8 month old ridgeback/rottweiler, and a 10 month old rottweiler. We live in an 1000 square foot apartment, with a huge deck. They used to stay in their crates when I went to work, but recently we thought we could leave them in the bedroom during the day. They were doing fine at first, but I came home today and they had chewed on the cable wire. I think I need to put them back in their crates. Their crates used to be in the bedroom, but it got so cramped. I was wondering if it would be ok to put them in their crates on the deck. The deck is covered, and has a wicket fence around it, and a net above it. WE live in San Diego, so its not cold or anything. Is it mean to leave dogs in crates? They get plenty of excercise, they go to the dog park for 1 hour a day, and I run them each 15 min a day, and walk them 30 min a day. Plus they have tons of toys, and they have their kongs, with treats. They play all night w/ each other.

Answer
Not if it is more than 4 hours a day.. And certainly not on the deck! Why don't you put them in the kitchen with some chew toys?

What brand of dog crates come with dividers for growing puppies?
Is there a brand that you'd recommend?
Thanks :)

Answer
I've got a couple of Mid West, Select model, available at PetSmart. Dividers are easy to move, they fold down quickly - I'd recommend them.

Are there dog crates that will accommodate two dogs with a divider and two doors?

The Truth

We have limited space and I was wondering if any of you have seen dog crates made specifically for two dogs, with a divider between the dogs and two doors.

Answer
There ARE crates that would work like that, but you would have to do a solid divider (like a thick slab of wood) or two wire dividers set inches apart from one another to prevent the dogs from reaching through and getting at one another.

One wire divider would leave enough room for them to get at one another if they get agitated (which can happen), and ears/tails can be injured or lips torn up. My dog's crate has three doors - one in the middle front and one on each end. I could put dividers in there and be able to put one dog on each side no problem.

This one would work just as well (one door on each end):
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3512172&lmdn=Crates+%26amp%3B+Kennels

Please remember that the crate should be only big enough for a dog to sit, stand, turn, and lay down comfortably. That may be difficult to do if you divide one up like that. You may end up with a space that's too big, which may lead to elimination in the crate if the dog(s) can sleep away from it.

And i would NEVER recommend letting two dogs share a crate - if they're shut in and get agitated (again, VERY possible) then they'll fight. Also, a crate should be a dog's personal den. Some dogs can get defensive over their spaces!

I feel really bad leaving my dog out outside when its really cold I would love to take him inside but he just tears everything apart I took him in my room but he tore my bed my shoes EVERYTHING! But I still feel bad I got him a bed and he tore that too I just wanted some suggetions on where and what should I do so he can have a warm good night sleep

Answer
From seeing my ex mother in laws experience with outside dogs, if you are set on keeping him outside, make sure he has shelter, whether it be a doghouse, a shed with a fence around it, a kennel with a runner, etc. Hay tends to help keep warm, they always filled the kennel with hay, and gave the dogs some old blankets that could be torn apart if they so desired. Their dogs would tear them up and make their own bedding, similar to how a bird makes a nest. They also would insulate the kennel with plastic over the top, and a sheet of rubber. (Her husband is a roofer so had easy access to these items, but you can get them at Home Depot or Lowes).

If you'd like to be able to bring your dog inside, get a crate #1. Crates are life savers! Depending on his age, you may already have a dog with bad habits set in, and possibly need professional help to disrupt this behavior. Some will offer free consults, just look up dog training in your phone book and find someone local. Your vet may also have some good suggestions, knowing your dog more personally than we do here, or be able to refer you to someone reputable in your area that specializes in the exact problem. Other answerers had some good suggestions; Kong, Nylabone and ropes are very good ideas. I personally like the Kong, because you can put treats inside, and this keeps them busy even longer trying to get the treat out! And, they are virtually indestructible. Good luck! Sounds like you really care about your pup, and I'm sure he'd love to be able to be in wtth you. The behavior needs to be controlled though before he destroys your home! My suggestion, insulate his shelter outside like I explained, and gradually work with him inside until you can keep in for good. Good luck!

Where is the best site to get a dog run?

I need to get one on a website. I hv a golden retriever he won't b in it all the time just a couple hours tops when we go somewhere. So a good size but nt too big

Answer
Sometimes you can find a used on on craigslist.org that is not expensive. Home Depot & Lowes carries them too. He might be better off indoors in a large crate or gated off in one room though, if you're not going to be home.

Agility For mixed breeds?

I am going to be adopting a dog from animal friends in Pittsburgh. Could I take my dog to agility competitions? I love doing agility with my dogs but never actually went to a competition. Also does anyone know of a agility training course in Pittsburgh?
I do agility with my dogs just don't compete.

Answer
1. AKC is really the only agility organization that you can't compete in with a mixed breed dog. USDAA, NADAC, CPE are all national organizations and all allow mixed breeds (heck--you can put down anything you want. I know one competitor who lists one of her dogs as "All-Canadian" and another lists her rat terrier under "breed" as "rat terrorist").

So, yes--by all means compete.

2. Here is some Pittsburgh agility info:
--Barb Levinson Dog Training Center in Idlewood Drive
--Golden Triangle Obedience Training Center on Laurel Ridge Drive
--4 Paws Performance Training in Export PA.
--Splash and Dash K9 Sports in Plum PA.
--Western PA. Kennel Association in Crafton PA.
All of these places offer classes. And I'm sure that there are plenty of trials (go to www.agilityevents.com) and trainers besides the clubs I've mentioned above.

I am looking for a RETIRED RACING GREYHOUND ORGINAZATION who has adoptable dogs in the New Castle, pa area????

If you don't mind a bit of a drive there is a greyt adoption program at Wheeling Downs in Martins Ferry, OH. Grey's Ana

I dont know what size to get him now. I would rather haalf one without a divider and buy him a new and better one later. What are the dimensions of a 5 month old male Golden Retriver?

Answer
Get a large quality wire crate now, and use the divider so that it is big enough for your dog to comfortably stand up, turn around, and lay down in. That's all. Adjust as he grows.

There's absolutely no point in getting a brand new crate just because you want to buy him a 'newer and better one', just get him a quality one and keep it clean and I guarantee it will be just as good..

What crate should I get for my female siberian husky?

StarNo5

She is 3 months old, I really have no idea how big she is going get since she is my first husky.
Anyone here have any suggestion how big of a crate I should get for a female siberian husky?

Answer
Joie is the only one who has given you something close to a correct answer.

My Siberian females do fine in a 300-400 size crate. You DO NOT need to go any bigger, certainly not 48"!!

For a plastic crate, this will do:
http://www.dog.com/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemNo=380121%20MD
Go with the 36"L x 24"w x 26"H

For a wire crate, choose something with similar dimensions.

Good luck!

Should I keep my dog or return him to the shelter due to cost of vet bills?

petco dog crate 800 on dog.com coupons, coupon codes and dog.com promotional codes
petco dog crate 800 image

Rhapsody

I adopted a mixed dog from the Humane Society on May 20. I was told he was heartworm positive, but otherwise he was healthy. 2 days later my dog developed Kennel Cough and I found traces of intestinal worms in his stool. I took him to the vet and they charged me $231.51 to treat these problems and to do bloodwork for his upcoming heartworm treatment. I was told heartworm treatment would cost $600 to $1000, which is way more than I thought it would be. I had to wait for his cough to go away before scheduling his first heartworm treatment. When I took him in it cost $321.61 for part 1 of treatment, but in the x-rays a foreign object showed up. Now, I've been home with the dog constantly or he's been in a crate so I doubt he swallowed something at my home. He was severely underweight when I took him home and he has had a lack of appetite since I got him. It's been a struggle to get him to eat, sometimes I have to feed him by hand to get him interested. Now the vet says it'll cost me $176 to bring him in and induce vomiting to see if the object will come up. If not, then the dog will need stomach surgery, plus his second part of heartworm treatment which will cost another $400. I don't know how much surgery will cost.

I still have a week and a half to return the dog to the shelter and get a refund, return all of his belongings to Petco, and get a refund on the pet insurance that I bought but won't cover because these conditions are pre-existing.

I was willing to cough up the $800 heartworm cost because even though I was mistaken about the cost (I thought it would be $200-$300) I knew that my dog had this problem. I am irritated about the other problems that the Humane Society didn't tell me about, although they probably didn't know cause he didn't show any symptoms.

My mom and my fiance think I should return the dog since they think it's ridiculous that I might have to pay for surgery. I've already spent $600 on vet bills and I really love the dog, so I don't want to take him back. However, I only saved up enough money to get a dog and cover any minor health issues; I just graduated from college and I have to pay back my loans in 6 months so I shouldn't empty out my savings account to care for the dog.

I'm really torn about what to do. I can't stop crying when I think about it. I know the reasonable thing to do would be to return the dog since I was under the impression he was healthy and wouldn't cost too much. But I have really enjoyed spending the last 2.5 weeks with my dog and he's the sweetest thing. What should I do?
Yes I should have researched how much heartworm treatment cost, but I could only put the dog on hold for 24 hrs, my family was visiting in town, and I had to get supplies and clean house to make it ready for the dog. I AM WILLING TO PAY for the heartworm treatment, but can't pay for the surgery too.

He has shown NO symptoms for the ingested object aside from being underweight with a low appetite, which he already had when I got him. It has not created a blockage, he poops 3 times a day. It's unlikely that he ate it at my house since he hasn't been left alone.

I have pet insurance just for situations like this one. BUT it doesn't cover this because it happened during the policy waiting period.
Turns out he didn't swallow anything. Additional x rays show that he has a BB embedded in his skin and the object near his stomach is a pellet from a gun. Somebody shot him twice.

Answer
Get back to the rescue and see what they say and see if they can help with this.

You shouldn't be getting a dog and within a couple of weeks spending that sort of money.

Rescues usually have their veterinary treatment at a lower cost and the least they should do is put it through their books. This should of all been done when you took the dog on.

Do go back to them.

crate for an escape artist?

Biscuit

I got my dog from the shelter about 3 months ago. I don't know his breed, he's a true mutt. He's almost 2 years old, over 60 lbs, and has separation anxiety. Most of his behaviors have improved over time, and I was developing confidence in him.

Until yesterday, when I came home from work to find he had dug through the carpet right down to the tile underneath. He had never done serious damage to the house, I wasn't expecting this, but now I'm really upset with him.

I want to put him in a crate while I'm at work. The reason he's in the house in the first place is because he escapes from the yard when I'm not home. But how do I know what crate will keep him in? He is strong and if determined, I can see him breaking out, or digging or chewing his way out. I know people always say positive things about crates, how it helps dogs feel secure, etc. I just don't want to make the investment only to find my dog managing to destroy it too.

Answer
Buy a metal crate, one that has permanently attached sides as the ones with side that all come apart are not sturdy enough to hold a dog like yours.
By extra clips to hold the top on. It should be permanently attached on one side, so use the clips to reinforce where it attaches to the sides of the crate. Take time to get the best you can afford and it will outlast your dog. The crates at Walmart, Petco, Petsmart aren't strong enough. You need to go on line to find the good ones. Plastic and cloth won't work for you. Try talking to these people about crates. Explain what I've described here. That's where I got my best crates;
http://www.kvpet.com 1-800-423-8211
Use a padlock to help hold the door shut and I can guarantee the best "escape" artist in the dog world will not get out of this.

I have signed up my black lab for a agility class in July and i would like to know a little more about it. I have been in love with agility forever and know all of the obsticles and the basic rules but i would like to know how i would go about competing when im ready. also, where can i find cheap agility obstacles because everywhere i look it would cost me $2000+ and i dont have that kind of money.
i live in south jersey and i would like to know if there is any place where i can go and just practice, because i know that the place i am going to has a open agility class, but thats $150 for 6 weeks

also, any other information i should know about agility thanks!

Answer
In the UK we have the Kennel Club, they give out information about competitions. They also have lists of Agility Clubs which cost a lot less to join than classes. I am sure that you will have the equivalent of the Kennel Club in your neck of the woods, try Google.

If you have enough space at home get someone to make a few jumps.You will find instructions on how to make these on the Internet and do practise your obedience training, it's vital if you want to do Agility.

Okayy so if i saved up £200-£300 would i be able to get a beagle puppy from the RSPCA. The price including all supplies that will be needed. and the puppy?
My mum has agreed to pay for the vet coverings and pet insurance.

Answer
Maybe. But this isn't going to cover all the other things we discussed in your previous question. If you have to scrape together £300, how are you going to pay for other vet bills or an emergency?

The price will likely include a basic collar, a leash, vaccinations, and altering the dog, but it's not going to include food, basic vet care, a bed, a crate, etc.

Edit: That's great that mummy is going to pay for vet bills. So you'll be able to get ahold of her in 7 years when you've moved out and have the dog and the dog gets a bowel obstruction at 2am and needs £2500 in surgery? They require payment upfront.
Who is going to pay for training?
Who is going to pay for basic upkeep?
Who is going to care for the dog if you decide that when you head off to uni, you can't take the dog?

I found a hedgehog in the garden, what should I do?

Caz -- X

He is a baby hedgehog, and my next door neighbor found him stuck in their shed, he is very weak, and not interested in food. We have tried ringing our nearest RSPCA center, but no one is answering, What should we do?
He is not like a baby baby hedgehog, he is just quite young :/

Answer
I found this information for you online and I found it quite interesting and cute.

How to care for a baby hedgehog

Hedgehogs should be given a rehydration fluid to begin with which can be made from water with milk and sugar. The milk of cows, goats and ewes are efficient in delivering the amount of nutrients for a baby hedgehog. The colostrums of these animals can be given for the first three weeks. After this, the colostrums should be replaced with normal milk which should be warm.

Weaning should commence at twenty one days old or until the teeth show and from about 100g, things like squashed banana and minced beef or chicken should be added to the diet. At about 150g, boiled egg yolk, canned dog food and mealworms can all be offered. Milk should be given by a dropper/syringe to begin with and then in a shallow dish along with the more solid foods.
Neonate hedgehogs will have to be fed frequently e.g. every half hour and at a few days old, should be fed every two to three hours.

Because baby hedgehogs can easily suffer from hypothermia it is essential that theyâre kept warm when feeding, - hoglets can be kept wrapped in a warm blanket during feeding. The hold on the hoglet should be firm and upright tilting slightly forward. The teat or end of dropper should be pushed gently between the lips and the tongue and the roof of the mouth. A small amount of milk should be given to initiate swallowing.

Small pens such as a fish crate are suitable accommodation although the sides should be high enough to prevent escape. Hypothermia can be avoided by providing a heat lamp or mat, although these should be kept at one end of the housing to provide a gradient.
The floor should be covered with layers of newspaper and soft, shredded paper. Also, providing something like a bobble hat can act as a substitute to a mother hog body.

So are you planning on keeping the baby hedgehog? It's possible that it may be too young to be seperated from its mother and handing it over to the nearest shelter (assuming they take exotics) would be a wise decision. If you decide to keep the precious animal then you will find a ton of information online about hedgehogs @

Few questions on my 6/7 month old staffy puppy?

dog crates gumtree on Huntaway Puppy
dog crates gumtree image

SeanFromLe

I have recently got a 6/7 month old staff 10 days ago, So far I think she is learning very fast. she listens most of the time.

I bought her from Gumtree, the previous owner said she has had all her injections as a puppy. and wont need them for another 6 months.

I thought I would ask a few questions if you would be able to answer them for me?.

1 - How can I tell if my puppy needs more injections

2 - do you know any training tips to help me

3 - do I need to know anything else.

4 - How do I calm her down she is very giddy and she jumps up trying like lick us and she bites our clothes and obviously I tell her NO but she still very giddy.

5 - What's the best way to teach her NO to biting. she doesn't bite nasty its just more of a playing thing.

So far she is excellent, I let her off lead on field and she comes back and I play with her quite often but she gets too giddy and she doesn't get off a playing toy even when told NO.

I live in the UK and don't have money for puppie lessons before anyone states**
Best answer will get 10 points

ALSO HOW DO I GET HER TO STOP BARKING AT PEOPLE!!
@Izzy, I haven't got any papers as they didnt have any, I will try that trick with the barking thank you.

Answer
With those kinds of dogs training is KEY!

You do not need to pay for classes. Go online and get pointers. Youtube, google, and look up Caesar Millan training. Make sure you are consistent and firm. Keep them on a regular schedule. Train her while she is young because she may be harder as she matures.

Hyper activeness- Make sure she is exercised 2-3 hours a day. I suggest buying a doggy treadmill. These dogs have an abundance of energy plus they are "work" dogs. You have to keep them BUSY! walk them, run them, keep them occupied ALL DAY!! OR you will regret it. A dog that is not exercised properly will act out, eat, and scratch things they shouldnt etc.

Barking - With the barking it could be anything. It took my dog months before he quit barking. Could get a bark collar (I never had one though), or she is telling you she wants attention. These dogs are very loyal and protective so best bet is just to put her in another room or out side when company comes over.

Also I suggest you crate train her. It would be heart wrenching for a while, but would prove wise in the end. Call it home every time you take her to it. so you can train her to go in the future. Put her in the room where the family is most of the time.

Biting- I held my pup snout clothes and said NO BITING! Some may disagree with my methods but it worked for me and my pit.

Injections- If you did not get papers on her vaccinations and rabies- go get her RE-Vaccinated just in case.

Jumping on people - IGNORE!! She is looking for attention. Do not encourage this behavior.

** Extra- I quit buying toys for my dog. I give him empty plastic soda bottles (top removed) . He went through toys like it was nothing! The bottles last longer! LOL!
Also soft music helps soothe them.

Hope this helped. Just do some research on line on training and you will do fine. Remember use short phrases.

**If you treat a dog like a human he will treat you like a dog** BE ALPHA!!! :)

What is the best way to bring a dog home from the Humane Society?

dog crates van on Puppies move outside! | Duurstede Kennels | William Ross Van Wyck
dog crates van image

New Girl

Dog seat belt harness or crate? Please provide reasoning for your answer. Thank you.

Answer
Both options are safe for the dog, provided the crate is adequately tethered inside the car so it can't become a projectile in a crash.

However, I'd go with the dog seatbelt because the dog may be calmer if he can see you and be near you. Also, if it's a large dog and you don't have a station wagon, SUV or van, you may find that a crate will not fit in your car.

The only plus to the crate is that if he is carsick or so anxious that he has diarrhea, it's easier to clean the crate than the car.

ETA: If this dog you're adopting is not already acclimated to a crate, you need to be careful introducing him to it as part of his first car ride. If he doesn't like car travel, you're going to have a very hard time getting him to accept the crate after the ride home, as he will associate it with a very stressful experience.

The crate is supposed to be his safe, protected place. It should be introduced carefully, calmly and happily, i.e. in a circumstance in which acceptance is likely.

What kind of Vehicle do you use to cart around your Dogs?

Gehorchen

I current looking for a New or Used car that gets around 30mpg. I take my two dogs to the local dog park about three days a week. Which kind of vehicle should I get? I am currently looking at a new Chevy HHR. But I also took a look at a few Focus, wagons today.
Ya it could be in the car section. But I want to know what dog people use.
I have a 25Lb Mini Schnauzer and a 50Lb Catahola Leopard dog.

Answer
I have a big conversion van. But, my dogs are always secured in a crate or in a seat belt harness. I would recommend something, but you didn't say what kind of dogs you have. How big, etc.... The only thing that makes me mad is when I'm driving on the road and see some stupid pet owner with their dogs unsecured in the open back of a pickup truck. What if the dogs jump out? What kind of ear problems do they end up with? What if they have a car accident, and the dog is thrown out of the bed? Now, I have seen one owner who had his dog in the open bed of his pickup, but it was in one of those metal dog kennel cage things. Now, you know that guy cares about his dog's safety. What ever you decide, just think of the safety of your pet.
Good Luck

How do I take my dogs camping?

Misha

So, I have 2 dogs, a border collie puppy and a springer, and me and my family want to go camping. We don't have a car so they can't stay in that and I don't want to tie them up outside because of wild animals and i don't own a crate for them. What other options are there? Because if they stay inside the tent I'm sure they could/would climb out under the small gap by the door. Idea's anyone?

Answer
OK - crawl out the tent? What gap? If you have a gap in your tent - you don't have a proper tent (the purpose of tents is to SEAL the outside to prevent bugs)

My dogs are leashed in my tent. Because if a bear, or moose, or raccoon or even chipmunk comes near - they MAY decide to blow through the netting. My dogs are older now, and seasoned campers and it hasn't happened but leashing just adds that measure of control.

Please do not tie your dogs out - more than one person has awoken to find their dog killed or injured - and a dog CANNOT stay in a car .

When I took my Doberman puppy camping - I did bring a small crate (a veri-kennel designed for small dogs) and had it inside the tent with me but it was fall and not hot, and its purpose was to keep puppy from getting too cold and from chewing. (Puppies cannot self regulate their body temperature the same way as adults)

Depending where you are - it could be very very hot and putting a dog in a crate in a tent with poor circulation of air will be harmful to puppy.

If you crate the dog outdoors - it will be tormented by deer flies, mosquitoes and every other flying thing. Its unfair to a dog.

You sound like you need to keep your dogs at home or board them.
***************
For clarity - my dogs are not confined in the tent except at night when I sleep. Tents can become extremely hot in summer and its very uncomfortable to be in one. At times, its suffocating.

My puppy was taken on a 2 day trip and only in the tent at night. During the day, I had the dog tied out when I was unable to actively supervise. But again, only 2 days - a short trip in nice weather.

Going on a long trip with a puppy in extreme heat is NOT a good idea.

I'm assuming you are not camping with an RV - I canoe and portage (hump) everything I take on my back. No x-pens or heavy equipment.

How large should my dogs crate be?

dog crates how to size image

I have a German Shepherd puppy. Videos that I have been watching say that I should get a dog crate wherein my dog can stand sit and turn. I've been thinking that if I do get such a size, my dog's growth will stop because of the crate. Also, German Shepherds are large bred dogs. What will happen when it grows up? I find it too expensive to buy a crate everytime the dog grows bigger.

Answer
It will not restrict his size. He might be uncomfortable in a crate that is too small AND you should never leave him in there for too long. My bullmastiff has the largest crate we could buy (even through special order). He now is too big for it, but still sleeps in it every night with the door open...voluntarily. I would never leave him in it for long, but if I can't put him outside when I leave for short periods of time due to weather, etc, I will close the door. He can still stand up and turn around in it, but I would never leave him in there for more than an hour or two...and he LIKES the cage.

As far as restricting growth...as I said before, it won't. My dog is now over 100 lbs...I do not think his growth has been restricted in the slightest.

Buy the largest one you can buy...german shepherds are not as big as bullmastiffs, but they are still very large. If he seems to like it more cozy, divide off part of the crate so the area is smaller while he is still little. My dog didn't care wither way.

Problem with getting rabbits from cage to crate in garden?

celine

So I have 2 Flemish giant rabbits, they have a pretty big cage, but we bought a large metal dog crate (biggest size) so we can let them in the garden in the summer

*you can skip this part if you want*
First we only had the male (he's castrated), and we had grass and sand in his cage, but when we got the female a year later, she started to dig, not that much of a problem, because we have concrete plates 50cm deep in the ground and around the cage in the ground, so they cant escape (that was for our dwarf rabbits we had before), but we also have chickens in the same cage, but they're seperated by a fence, but whatever

So to give them the chance to also be able to eat fresh grass, we bought the crate, they can't dig through the holes in the bottom but the grass comes through it, they really enjoy it

*start reading again here*

But the problem is that we have a pretty big garden, and in the middle is a tree and we have the crate under it so there's shadow in it
My rabbits love to get petted, but hate it to be carried, the one we had first could go freely in the garden but when we got the 2nd, it wasn't possible since she'll definately run away,
So we have to carry them from their cage to the crate, wish causes them a lot of stress, my hands and arms a lot of scratches and they lose a lot of fur so my clothes are full of fur if I carry them

Can someone give me an idea/advice how I could fix this? I thought of buying a XXL rabbit tunnel (they're 15m) but they're too small for my rabbits (since they're flemish giants)
Is there anything else I could use to get them from the cage to the crate without having to carry them?
(I also can't carry the crate with them in since their paws will stick through it)
@Elizabeth
They're flemish giants, and most harnesses are made for dwarf or normal sized rabbits, so they won't fit
I bought a puppy harness and triedto but it on the female (did it very slowly and patiently) but she hated it :(
The male can easily be free in the garden, he won't run away, but I don't dare it with the female since she a bit euhh.... aggressive? Active? You know what I mean.... She's born the August 15th so her zodiac sign is Leo, I nickname her Pretty Little Lion :p
But if the male is free in the garden, and the female in the crate, she just flips out, so I can't just put her alone in the crate

@Other two
Thank you! Hadn't even thought of that! We have a carrier for if they have to go to the vet, they're scared of it, so maybe in this way I can teach them something fun is gonna happen when they go in it!

Answer
what u could do is buy a large dog carrier and when you want them to move, tempt them into it and carry it across to the crate. When they go in and out the crate give them a treat and praise them, it works, when you carry them in a carrier walk really slowly and try to either get a really dark one or one thats really airy and they can see around them (that one is best), the plastic ones last longest. Hope it helped,

How to clean up after a parvo dog has died?

I know parvo is not airbourne. my little dog had it and died. I can use bleach on the hardwood floors to sterile them but what can I use on the carpet to clean them. Also the bedding can be washed and the beds sprayed with lysol. Can I steam clean the carpets to disinfect them? What else do I need to clean?

Answer
Sorry for your troubles.One part bleach to 30 parts water kills the virus in your yard and washable surfaces. Animal Health is a company that sells a product called Kennel Care that has been proven to kill the virus and can safely be used on carpets and furniture. It is reasonably priced. May the end of this year grant you good fortune. Their # is 1-800-424-7536

My dog is refusing to walk on his back leg?

~~~
My dog was put into a Kennel (dog boarding) from Tuesday till Saturday. I picked him up around 12pm and he was fine and was eager to get back home. Once home he laid in my room until 5pm when i fed him. And that's when i noticed he refused to use his leg, he holds it up in the air. I checked his foot and nothing seems to be wrong. The Kennel never told me anything had happened but now i'm confused? What could be wrong?
Answer
Couple questions...what type of dog and age?? Any major running around, especially like sprinting runs (at the kennel or when got home). Front leg or back?? What kind of ground surface are dogs let out on to play and do their business?
Be sure to check the paw...pads, inbetween toes, and claws for anything abnormal. Check the leg for any lump, bumps, swelling, or tenderness, fur loss, or wounds. Also check shoulder (if front leg) or hip and knee (if back leg).
There could be lots of possibilities ranging from just being sore up to cruciate tear (back leg) or fracture.
If you don't find anything by checking the things I listed above and being that he appeared fine for a few hours back home, it likely is not something that needs to see a vet ASAP. If you don't find anything, I would probably let him rest a few days...then see how it is. It may just need that rest if he is sore or just stepped on it wrong. If not better in a few days or gets worse, then a vet visit is warranted.
Which airline do you recommend to ship my dogs?
I have to have my dogs flown from Portland Oregon to Dallas Texas. I always fly Southwest when I fly home, but Southwest doesn't allow pets to fly as cargo. So I have no idea which airlines allow pets to fly cargo. What do you recommend? I want to pay less than $300 for one dog
I just called Continental and it's so cheap! Only $199!
Answer
Continental. Best care and handling of carrier/crates with easiest and most efficient drop-off and claim of "pet cargo."
What to expect when shipping a puppy?
Indi
So ill be getting an 8 week old male akita puppy shipped to me in mid June by Alaskan airlines. He's coming from Stevinsen, CA to Portland, Oregon. How long o a flight is that for him? Will I be able to take him out of his crate in the airport (I've been waiting to get this dog for 2 years and ill be excited) or do I have to wait until we leave? Should I ring hi food and water (ride home from airlines in only about 20 minutes) I know he may be stressed but I thought I'd ask. Also, ill take him potty before the ride home. Any other things I should expect or any advice? Thanks :)
Answer
A minor with an akita and a breeder selling an akita and shipping without seeing the owner... and knowing it is going to be handled by a minor who cannot possibly have the experience to deal with a dog of this nature. Great !!!!!
I'd think twice about taking one on and I've had rottweilers for 25 yrs. All the mature, experienced adults that I know of in rottweilers that also have akitas still say they are hard work.
Get your parents to sort this out.
Why does my dog eat my carpet and carpet padding?
I just put down a new area rug with some padding underneath. My 1 year old beagle molly has been chewing the carpet and the padding underneath. I have tried all of the anti chew sprays, my dog acts like its topping on a sundae. She also like anything citrus and loves tobasco sauce. Nothings works! She has chew bones and a kong but prefers to chew soft cloth things like my couch and the carpet. She also chews everything wood or plastic. She is crated at night and when we are gone from home, but i cant crate her 24/7. How can i stop her from chewing up my carpet?
Answer
Find some old tea towels, tie them in knots, wet them down, put them in individual baggies and freeze them. When she begins to chew on something, give her a firm 'NO' in a hard, deep voice, not loud. Then take her to the kitchen and give her one of the knotted towels.
This is a training exercise that I teach in Puppy Kindergarten for teething. But because the towel gets soft quickly it might help with your dog. If it's an old towel, she can chew it up and then you just throw it away.
You can also try soaking it in bouillon or making bouillon ice cubes or just ice cubes. I know that she is not teething at this time but some of my students are still using these things for chew toys. They tell me that it has saved all sorts of furniture from destruction.
It's inexpensive, give it a try.
Good Luck
What is the best way to get a puppy from using the bathroom in the house?
The Lost S
I have a crate that I put him in when I'm gone but, when I'm here I let him roam free and take him out a lot. He uses the bathroom outside and I treat him but then he'll use it whenever he pleases inside. I tried the whole rubbing the nose in it and put him outside afterwards but he doesn't get it. I'm tired of cleaning up his messes and carpet sucks for that. He's really young so I guess I'll just have to be patient. I read other responses to the same question I'm asking and they said just to use a crate. My puppy is a whiner and there is no way I'm just going to leave him in the crate 24/7. He sleeps with me and anytime away from me he whines. I can't even take a shower without him having to be there in the room. Also, he bites alot. He has chew toys but won't stop nibbling on u when u try to pet him and he's been snapping in my face lately. What do I do? I go a little terriorizer with an overactive bladder on my hands. HELP!
Answer
Please don't rub his nose in it. It does not help matters. Take a paper towel or toilet paper to the mess with your puppy under your other arm let him/her see you remove the poop with the paper. Proceed outside with poop and pup. Put poop on the grass and pup on the grass. Repeat at least 4 times. Pup should begin to ask to be let outside to poop. You did not say what breed your pup is. Biting can be discouraged too. Place you hand gently around his snout when he bites say 'no' firmly. Wether he is biting out of aggression or excitation you also failed to mention. Either way, being constant with your pup will win the day for you and your friend.
Use of the crate:- you should only use it when you have to ie while your out. Playtoys should be given to the dog. You should not use the crate as a punishment zone as the pup will not want to be put there when you go out and will not see it as his bed. Once you have established better pooping behaviour crating should become unnecessary. He is probably crying when you go because they get abandonment issues. Leave a TV going for company. A loud ticking clock also gives comfort. But toys often helps this problem as well. This problem should disappear also as he gets older and used to household occurances. Dogs work best when they know whats going on and what time it will happen each day. As for him being in the room when your are showering really just what do you want from your friend he doesnt care wether you are clothed or not and is only trying to establish the routine of his new home. Love him and the puppy time will be over before you know it and you will wonder what to do with this now lathargic dog that just lolls around doing stuff all.
I've been looking for a dog crate for my beagle/ basset hound but everywhere is so expensive! I bought a mesh one from walmart but she ripped that right up. Even Walmart for a cheap one is min 50 dollars for crappy quality! I keep looking on ebay but they are all too expensive too. If anyone knows of any place to buy a good quality dog crate for less money please let me know. Thanks!
Answer
You could try posting it as a need on freecycle.org...you could post a "want to buy" on craigslist.com, or you could try local rummage sales. Do any of your local radio stations have a program to buy/sell/trade items?
A crate is going to cost in the $50-$100 range for that size. I bought a nice one at Sportsman's Warehouse for my toy dog that was reasonably priced. Tractor Supply used to have the best prices on crates. Check out farm stores/hunting supply stores in your area for crates...they often have lower prices on pet supplies (and they are often much higher quality, as well).
Where can I get absorbent dog mats for airplane travel?
Vikky J.
I need to buy some absorbent material to put in my dog crate when we go to Japan. The flight is 12 hours so it needs to be really good because I know he will pee sometime along the way and I want him to be comfortable and not have to lay in it. I'm not sure what the best material would be to buy or where I can even get it. Any suggestions would be great.
