I am going to be adopting a dog from animal friends in Pittsburgh. Could I take my dog to agility competitions? I love doing agility with my dogs but never actually went to a competition. Also does anyone know of a agility training course in Pittsburgh?
I do agility with my dogs just don't compete.
Answer
1. AKC is really the only agility organization that you can't compete in with a mixed breed dog. USDAA, NADAC, CPE are all national organizations and all allow mixed breeds (heck--you can put down anything you want. I know one competitor who lists one of her dogs as "All-Canadian" and another lists her rat terrier under "breed" as "rat terrorist").
So, yes--by all means compete.
2. Here is some Pittsburgh agility info:
--Barb Levinson Dog Training Center in Idlewood Drive
--Golden Triangle Obedience Training Center on Laurel Ridge Drive
--4 Paws Performance Training in Export PA.
--Splash and Dash K9 Sports in Plum PA.
--Western PA. Kennel Association in Crafton PA.
All of these places offer classes. And I'm sure that there are plenty of trials (go to www.agilityevents.com) and trainers besides the clubs I've mentioned above.

http://www.steelcitygreyhounds.org - Pittsburgh
http://www.keystonegreys.org - Harrisburg
http://www.makepeacewithanimals.org/ - New Hope *this group is run by author Cynthia Branigan who's books on greyhounds are quite famous and worth a read.

http://www.ngap.org/ - Philadelphia
If you don't mind a bit of a drive there is a greyt adoption program at Wheeling Downs in Martins Ferry, OH. Adopting through a track program offers quite a few benefits and if you have ever been interested in attending a race or learning about kennel life then this is the way to go. http://www.gpawheeling.org/index.html
