I am getting a dog, i need some opinions/advice...?

Q. Question number one:
I'm going to be adopting a one year old American Pit Bull Terrier with in the next couple weeks(Female - 52 pounds) from my local animal shelter and i am ordering some stuff off of a website (A reputable website!) i already ordered a twelve month supply of both Frontline Plus and Heartgard Plus. I also ordered Super Pure Omega 3 240 capsules (I am ordering everything i need all at once.) I have already bought multiple toys, three leashes (A nylon leash, a chain leash, and a leather leash), two flat collars, Shampoo, a crate/kennel, a extra large dog bed, an elevated food and water dish holder, food and water bowls (Four), and i have $2,500 set aside in the bank for any emergencies (Unexpected Veterinary Emergency)... I do have a veterinarian appointment set up for June 16th (I will be getting my American Pit Bull Terrier on the 12th) and i am signing her up for obedience classes that start on June 22nd.
Is there anything else that i need for my new companion that i am missing?

Question number two:
I am wondering how long a 30 pound bag of Taste Of The Wild Wetlands Canine with Roasted Fowl Dry Dog Food along with 12 cans of Taste Of The Wild Wetlands Canine with Roasted Fowl Canned Dog Food (13.3 OZ in each can) would last (An estimate would be fantastic!)? I don't know if i should order two bags and 24 cans, or just one bag and 12 cans for the time being.

I am so excited to get my dog, i have been saving up for my own dog since i was 17 years old (I am now 26 years old) and waiting until i was in a good place (Both financially and having my own home/fenced in yard/etc..) to adopt my own dog.
Dragonfry,
First of all, i want to say thank you so much.
I want to add though, that the metal leash has chain links but the handle is leather, i probably should have mentioned that previously. (Like this: http://www.google.com/#q=Chain+leash&hl=en&rlz=1R2ADFA_enUS414&prmd=ivns&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&ei=8JPjTeXRIMXi0QHcvojCBw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CFAQzAMwAA&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=3462ed02299704e9&biw=1345&bih=496 )
Also, the elevated water/food dish holder attaches to the crate so my dog won't be able to tip/spill it, i won't be using it regularly.. Just for travel/etc..

Answer
CONGRATS on getting a dog. You seem very excited. What you have now should be fine, the dog will be lots of work but it is so worth it. Depending on how well shes trained i sugest preparing yourself lol your house is ready, but make sure before you get her your 100% willing to take the time and do the work having a dog means. Normally a dog should be fed once or twice a day, smaller bowlfuls if twice. But it also depends on the dog. I sugest ordering the smaller ammount. Rember you cant dictate how the dog will react to the food. Maybe it upsets her tummy, maybe it causes her to have issues taking a dump, maybe she just hates the food. Dogs can be picky. My own lost there taste for the old food and wouldnt eat, now i have to buy another kind. Id be happy to say more about how to care for a dog if youd like to im or message me.

Could i leave my dog outside? Read description!?

Baxter

My dog has had diahrrea all day. I dont want him in the house because he keeps going every 30 minutes its 10:52 pm and im thinking about leaving my dog outside in a crate with sheets...its raining so i could put a tarp on top...would he get sick?? its about 46 degrees outside and again its raining. Please help i dont know what to do=(

Answer
Dear god, I'm appalled both that you would even ask this and that a couple people encouraged it. I do APBT rescue and this is one of the most heartless things I have ever heard. You want to leave a sick dog outside in the cold rain, stuck in a crate filled with his own feces?! Please, please dont tell me that this is for real. What a pathetic, lazy excuse for a dog owner. People like you are the reason that the world we live in is so heartless. Please reasses what is important in life- you need a reality check.

Most aggressive dog breed?

rebecca

I herd from someone that Dachshunds are the most aggressive dog breed????? Okay... But how come every Chihuahua I met NEVER let me pet them, one never accepted a treat from me, and two bit me on the finger or leg. They had good owners and were never abused, they were mean to everyone except there owner. One of them just came up and bit me in the back of the leg, for no reason. I was calm, cool, collected, not nervous at all, and then she took a big chunk out of my calf. As for dachshunds, only one out of the 52 I met wouldn't stop barking. That's because he had a previous owner who abused him. As for biting, never have I met a Dachshund who even attempted. I have met 3 dachshunds who get nervous around children, and they growl at them. All you have to do is either put the dog in the crate until the child leaves, or tell the child to ignore the dog and the dog will do nothing, except try to sniff the kid. I know Dachshunds hunt badgers... maybe that's the bad rep?

Answer
The Chihuahuas you are describing are unstable and/or untrained. A dog that is aggressive is not going to be mindlessly lashing out and biting people or animals unless they are perceived as a threat or as prey, unless the dog is also totally unstable. Aggression is merely a dog's innate genetic response of fight being more prevalent than flight, it is coupled with some level of drive (prey, territorial, dominance, protective, possessive) and then with a threshold level for arousal. It is only when these three are out of balance (or totally left to develop without any training or guidance) that you get one of those nasty dogs that just likes to bite everyone it sees - that dog is UNSTABLE, the aggression or willingness to engage is not the issue.

Ideal dimensions of dog crate for Jack Russell Terriers?

dog crate 52 on Folding Dog Cage Crate Wire Kennel Cat Bird Cage Pet Supply New
dog crate 52 image

Looking into buying a Vari Kennel Dog Crate and they have two options:
Size 1 (S): L 53 x W 41 x H 38 cm (L 20", W 16", H 15")
Size 2 (M): L 71 x W 52 x H 55 cm (L 28", 20.5", H 22")

Is the S to small for a full grown Jack Russell?
Thanks.

Answer
It depends on the size of your dog. I think that the crate is supposed to be big enough for them to stand up in and one and a half times the length of the dog. Good luck!

Where are some great hikes I can take my dogs on in/near San Francisco?

Karin

I will be taking my dogs (and my husband) on a weekend trip to San Francisco, and we'll have some time to kill in the mornings. Where can we hike that is dog-friendly and not just on the streets/sidewalks of the city? We like being in nature, so any woodsy areas would appeal to us. Thanks!

Answer
Here are some suggestions.

NOTE: Non-service animals may ride on transit vehicles during non-commute hours. Avoid 5-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. on weekdays. Leashes and muzzles are required for larger dogs. Containers or crates are sufficient for smaller ones.

----

Golden Gate Park. San Francisco's version of Central Park. You'll see lots of people walking their dogs in the morning. Despite the large spaces and woodsy surroundings, however, this is a fully urban environment. The expectation is you'll clean up after your dog and keep it under control at all times.

Metro: N
Bus: 5, 16, 18, 28, 29, 44, 71

-----

Dolores Park. Small and urban. Not much space to roam and the rules are strict. But it is also fairly popular with dog owners. Excellent views of the skyline.

Metro: J
Bus: 33

-----

Alamo Square. Same as above.

Bus: 5, 21, 22, 24

-----

Lake Merced and Fort Funston. Near the San Francisco Zoo. Nice semi-wild park near the beach. Very dog friendly.

Metro: L
Bus: 18, 88

-----

Glen Canyon Park. Definitely off the beaten track as well. Quieter than most San Francisco parks. Also very dog friendly.

Metro: J, BART (Glen Park)
Bus: 44, 52

-----

Golden Gate National Recreation Area (in Marin County). This is the largest urban national park in the country. Lots of hiking opportunities. You'll probably see deer, rabbits, racoons, and skunks. And maybe a hawk or coyote. Numerous forests, meadows, beaches, streams, etc.

Bus: 76 Limited (Sundays and Holidays only)

What is the best cleaning method for throw up?

dog crate 52 on Designer Dog Bed Cot - Dog Beds - Designer Dog Beds - Dog Bed Cots ...

VerdeOjos

Gross, sorry. But one of my puppies is randomly throwing up, like once or twice a week (we have taken them to the vet and he says they probably just havee a tummy ache, are eating too fast, playing too hard, etc.) But the problem is they have more freedom cause they are older and I don't always know when or where they throw up until hours, or even days later. What is the best way to clean it up? I have tried the stuff that I used when I was house training them to spray on it, but it doesn't get the stain out... I am getting my carpets cleaned because we are all done with house training, but I can't be sure that throwing up is never gonna happen! Thank you !!!

Answer
I share your pain, sort of. I have a cat who does the same thing- vomits without warning and for no consistant reason. I called the vet and told them my cat was bulemic. (ha) She was placed on anti-nausea pills which helped tremendously, but was a management tool as well as a short term fix. A week after she stopped taking them, she began the vomiting again. (Maybe I shouldn't have asked her why she couldn't be more like her step-sister (not really)). I have no idea what is causing it, neither does the vet yet.

I *do* know that it is not uncommon for some dogs to be pukers after playing or after just eating. If s/he is eating too fast because s/he doesn't want the other dog(s) to eat her food, let him/her eat in a separate area so the other dogs cannot eat his/her food (or vice versa if s/he is eating fast in order to eat someone else's food). If you just need him/her to slow down during chow time, scatter the food- some in the bowl, some around the bowl on the floor. It helped my dogs to slow down when they had to play "52 kibble pick up".

Back to your main problem- cleaning the dog vomit. I would start with Nature's Miracle. It comes in a white plastic bottle with red lettering and red lid. (Find it at Petsmart, Petco, specialty pet supply stores, etc, and online at PetEdge and & Drs. Foster & Smith to name a few. You won't find it at Walmart, Target, or grocery store unless you have a really cool grocery like Bare Essentials or some other "granola" type market). I have used that for housesoiling problems and for vomit. It works great for me. Blot the "blat" up with a wet towel first. Then spray Nature's Miracle on it and follow the directions on the bottle. It has always worked better than Simple Solution (which is now called something else) for me. I have not had to clean carpets of the disgustingly florescant yellow "green grass puke" yet, so I can't say how it works on that. It certainly works for dog food vomit and empty stomach vomit.

Have you considered crating your dogs separately while you are away? (I realize they can puke the second you walk out of the room while you are home, and I am not suggesting that you imprison them.)

If I knew what kind of food you were feeding them, I might be able to offer more advice. I am sure that since you have gone to the vet, you have already explored that. Glad you have taken him/her to the vet. I am assuming you have a good vet that you trust. That's important. I hope your dog gets better and is not chronically bulemic like my cat. Peer pressure stinks, I guess. ;-)

How much does it cost monthly to keep a german shepherd dog?

Navid

Answer
As Rolls Royce salesmen are reputed to say:
"If you have to ask the cost, you can't afford it."

And as with cars. the first and last year are usually the most expensive!

Including fence-&-gate repairs to make it unlikely that she can escape, purchase price, petrol to collect her from 4½ hours away, feeding, vaccinations, micro chipping & licensing with the city council, replacing phone & power cables she'd chomped through, my pup cost me $2662.58 from 20 July to 28 December, which would average $532.52 a month - or $304.32 without the fencing & purchase price. I have not yet replaced the leash she pulled out of its bag and chomped into about 7 bits. Nor have I fixed or replaced the bagless vacuum-cleaner whose internal air passages got blocked when I tried to vacuum up the shreds of chomped "fire-wood" she left on the carpet in the hallway. I haven't counted the cost of replacing the shirt she damaged when she decided that the laundry out on the line was dry enough so leapt up, removed it from the clothes line, and brought it inside to me. Nor the irreplaceable magazines that she removed from my bookshelf & shredded, nor the fine for the library book she "discovered" in my bedroom and chomped a corner off. Nor have I counted the cost of the 2-years-old briskets waiting in my deep freezers since my previous GSD died - so far she has had only 2 bags of them, as they were extra large ones and so it took a while for her jaws to develop enough power to "destroy & swallow" them. Today, those bags would probably cost about $60. I have no idea what the electricity to power the freezers has cost during those 2 years.

Feeding costs are the most variable. Using a butcher is the most expensive. Using an abattoir is the cheapest except for having friendly hunters drop you their spare meat (especially duck hunters who clean last year's kill out of their freezer ready for the start of the new season). Dogs can survive on kibble mucks, but those are not the RAW meat that dogs do best on.

I already had security pens outside, a crate for when I have to shut her away while she's in the house, slip-chains & leashes, dishes for food & water, various balls that had arrived from neighbour's places and not been asked for, a brush & comb & anti-flea shampoo, nail clippers, old towels for rubbing her down when she's wet or dirty.

If you sensibly join a training club, you will need a dumbbell of the right size & weight to suit your pooch from 18 weeks old onwards. (My current pup likes a challenge, so she "finds" logs almost too big to fit in her mouth, a yard broom that is too big to fit through the doorway and along the passage until she allows it to revolve instead of it sticking out several feet each side of her mouth...)

If you are in a heart-worm area you WILL need to buy the preventative on-schedule.
You do NOT need to buy "treats". But you do need a source of cheap bones - chicken wings, oxtail or lamb-spines are suitable for the last-thing-at-night bone every pup should get daily. Do NOT buy the ox-leg bones that supermarkets want you to take away - they are far too dense for an adult dog, even; yes, dogs gnaw lovingly on them, hoping to reach the marrow inside (more than a level teaspoonful of marrow is too rich for the tummies of most dogs), but are more likely to shatter a tooth than shatter an ox-shin or ox-thigh.
