Dog problems!!!!!!!!?

LainaBug

I've had a dog for a year now. And she still uses the bathroom in the floor we have the pee pads but she won't use them anything we could do to teach her to use them?

Answer
Why are you using pee pads? What a waste of money! Get a dog crate and use that to house train your dog- it's the easiest way. Petco's website has a huge sale on them right now- it's where I got one for my new dog. Have the dog sleep in the crate or be in it when you're not around to watch it- the dog won't eliminate when it's in the crate. Then when you are there to supervise take the dog outside and when he or she does use the bathroom then give them lots of praise and/or a treat. The dog should learn pretty quick. PS- make sure not to yell at your dog for using the bathroom inside unless you catch them doing it- they won't understand why you're yelling at them and will only make them upset.

Dog Crates???

SamiiLynn

My very active/hyper 5 month old Beagle border collie puppy has out grown her wire crate. She is crate trained and doesn't go to the bathroom in the house/crate anymore. We are going to get her a bigger crate but would a carrier crate calm her down alittle? Her crate would be under a window so she would get light in to it. If we put a blanket over her wire crate, she just pulls it through the bars and chews on it. She gets pleanty of exercise and is only in the crate when we cannot watch her and when we are out.
Which type is better?

And yes i have asked this question before becasue different people are on at different times and i would like to hear their imput too.

Answer
The plastic ones are good because they provide a cavelike feeling for the dogs. However the wire ones are easier to clean. The final decision lies with you. Whatever works best for you. If you decide on the wire crate, they do sell covers to fit snuggly on your crate so that your dog will not chew and pull on it. If you are looking for a reasonable price on crates, try ebay. I bought a brand new 42" wire crate for less than $50 including shipping. It would have costed me $130 at Petco.

Separation anxiety in dogs help?

My shihtzu scratches at the door and barks real loud when we leave. He paces too We have to crate him, or else he will destroy the door. I feel so sorry for him, he acts so happy when we come back like we have been gone forever. How can I cure this?

Answer
My dog gets vary upset during the day when we are at work a local dog store (not a Pet-smart or Petco), have all-natural anti-anxiety treats. We give the dog a treat before we leave for the day and he has been great, he also gets really anxious when we have tons of people over, so the treats help for that as well. Now that he got accustomed to calming down while we are gone, we only give him one every other day or what not to wean him off of them.

How do you know what size crate to get for a growing puppy?

Q. Ive been doing some looking, and crates are quite expensive.. around $50 to $75 and I really dont want to have to buy new ones every time he outgrows them.

Right now I have a 5 month old American Bulldog/Pit mix.

I know the crates are only supposed to be big enough so they can turn 360 and lay, but no more because they will potty in a corner and sleep in another.

Any advise?

Also.. off the subject, my puppy is 5 months, hes about 20-21 inches from the floor to the top of his rump. How long until he if full grown?
Thanks for the answers, we havent bought a crate yet because we really didnt want to crate train him. I havent had many dogs in my life, and this one is like family. I just couldnt stomach the fact of keeping him locked up all day, bored with nothing to do. But, when we go to work, he is inside all day, and pees and poops, and it just really sets back his potty training, hes not trained yet. So we decided this would be the best thing to get him trained, and afterwards we wouldnt use the crate.

Answer
you measure a dog standing, from the floor to the top of his shoulders.
for a crate, go to petsmart/petco, they should have crates already setup. bring your dog and put him in some. make sure when he stands, his head does not hit the top, can turn and lay down nicely stretched out.
he can grow to 27in at the shoulder.
so its better to get a bigger crate than risk a smaller one. there are crates with a panel for life stages that can cut the crate in half or w/e size you want.
crate training is needed no matter what.
the dog is in the crate when you arnt home, or cannot watch over him. the crate should be a safe haven for the dog. but obviously he will hate it for some time.

Where can I get a good deal on a dog crate?

dog crates at petco on ... Dog Crates - Wire Dog Crates and Collapsible Dog Crates from petco.com

I'm hoping to find a wire dog crate that is at least 33" H for under $100. Right now my dog has a 30'' crate, and it's a tad short. They seem to be just over at places like Petsmart/ Petco. Is there somewhere where they are a tad cheaper, on-line is fine!

Answer
Ebay or Craigslist. Or you could find a local rescue near you, and see if they'll trade you for your 30" crate + a donation to their rescue =) I know the rescue I volunteer for would do it because they're not losing out and they'll get a donation.

If you go to petfinder.com and type in your zipcode it'll bring up some rescues near you that you can contact.

Good luck!

Where can I find the bottom plastic piece to a dog crate?

chantakg

We've had our dog crate about a year and the bottom (plastic piece) split in half. I called petsmart and petco and niether of those stores carry them. I was wondering if there was somewhere I could find one online. THanks

Answer
Try www.craigslist.com then pick the state you live in On the right hand side of the page there is a place for pets. You can post a wanted ad and see if any one has one they want to get rid of

How big should the crate be when crate training?

Humble

I bought a collapsible crate from petco for our new jack russle puppy. I bought it big enough so it will fit him comfortably as an adult dog as well. Was that a mistake? I ask because I was told in order to potty train a puppy using the crate training method the crate needs to be just big enough for them to lay down in. Is that true?

Any potty training tips because I don't really want to buy a smaller crate at this point.
Thanks you guys! It's our first dog and it was seriously ticking me off he kept going potty in his crate :P I'll block off half of it... The answer was so simple I feel like a retard.
OMG (laughing at myself) The extra wire thingy! (slaps my forehead) it was the DIVIDER! hahaha

Answer
The crate should be big enough for him to stand up and lay down. They should not have room to really stretch out or to walk around. If they can poo in one corner and lay down in another IT'S TOO BIG. Once the pup had learned, he can be moved up to a crate that is twice his size.
Make sure it is a wire crate with tons of ventelation. You can make your dog sick if he gets to hot. (upset tummy)
**my pup learned NO in less than 10 minutes***
Best way to teach a dog NO is to put a handful food on the ground in between you and the pup. When he goes for the food, cover it with you hand and say NO. When he leaves it alone, give him ONE pellet of the food from A DIFFERENT place. Don't give it to him from the pile. That teaches him it was ok to eat from that pile.
Never spend too long on one lesson. They get REALLY bored really quick. 10 mins at most. Come back to it in an hour if you have to.
Never repremand for them not learning or getting something wrong. They have to have a BIG learning curve!
Shoving your dogs face in the poo they left on your floor will only get you vet bills from your dogs nose getting infected.
When they are in trouble... yelling is enough. They understand when you are over them screaming at them. Don't make it worse by hitting them.
END ON A GOOD NOTE!! If after a couple good tries stop and play with them. They will not listen once they get bored.
LOVE THEM!!!
