What size crate should I get for a medium-sized dog that weighs 34 lbs?

It's a border collie/lab retriever mix...she is 1 year old...and will she grow anymore do you think? Because I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a crate that she will end up outgrowing.
Where can I get one for cheap?
@Carol: I would do that, but I'm picking her up from the humane society tomorrow to take her home, and need something to put her in. lol but thanks!

SInce she is a mix, you're going to need to measure her height at the top of her head when she stands square - she will need to be able to stand without ducking down, and turn around comfortably, and lie on her side with her legs stretched out.

Long story short, I need to get a young dog (1 year old lab) from Eastern Pennsylvania to Midwest Ohio and have no clue how to go about it. HELP!!!

Alaska and Continental are the two best airlines to fly a dog (no weather restrictions) , Delta comes in next. You have to make sure the dog is current on all vaccines, take him to the vet for a health certificate prior to travel. Book your flight, get an appropriate crate and you are all set. The price is by weight and crate size, rough guess about $400.

Okay, a lot of people are assuming that I dont know not to buy from a pet store. I understand your assumption, i forgot to mention that i breed dogs. LOL. I just want a poodle as a companion. And to the girl who posted first, I understand that the pom-poms on the HIPS , arent appealing to everyone, but it protects there hip joints from getting cold. So its not just cuz its cute, it has a reason, everything on a poddle has a reason, except for the top not and the braclets. Even the tail, its for hunting, like when the dog is out in the feil getting whatever you shot its tale acts like a flag, so you dont shoot your dog. :), sorry for the lecture, I just love poodles, and i hate when people think there just for looking at.

New Puppy (Shopping) Checklist

General:
Paper towels (a lot of paper towels :)
Old Towels for Crate
Once puppy is reliably crate trained, a "real" crate bed can be used.
Old Blanket or Towel(s) to cover wire Crate
Cotton balls for cleaning ears
Acrylic (Fake) Nail file, cardboard with sandpaper type, for smoothing nails
Hydrogen Peroxide (to induce vomiting, if necessary)
100% Pure canned Pumpkin (from the baking isle of your grocery store)
Pumpkin is a good source of fiber. When puppy has diarrhea or constipation, a tablespoon or two with every meal for several days should help alleviate symptoms. Freeze excess in ice cube tray.

Is it too early for an 11 week old puppy to stay at a kennel for a weekend?

We are going to visit our family next weekend. I want to bring my puppy but our family doesn't want her in their homes. She's not totally housetrained yet and she really doesn't have anywhere to run around in their homes. I know my boys would be upset if she can't come with us. I really don't want to leave her in a kennel and we have no one to watch her while we're gone. Plus the car ride will be about 4 hours. Any suggestions?

If your family doesn't want the puppy in their home, everyone will be miserable if you take him. He will probably have to stay crated most of the time. Talk to your vet, make sure he is up to date on everything he is old enough to have. There are several really good boarding places out there. I have no idea where you live, but look on-line and check out a few. I know there is one here in the Midwest that even gives the dog a TV. That is a bit much...mine are happy with the radio!

Good luck...he will be fine though, it is just a weekend and who can resist playing with a boarded puppy.

My dog is extremely scared to go inside, what do I do?

My dog is a Cockapoo and on average she is inside her cage all day, all night. I can't control this because my parents don't trust her in the house. However, when it's time for her bathroom break around 3pm she barks and gets excited, but she is TERRIFIED of going outside. And when we go to calm her down, she ducks down and urinates. How can I fix this, and hopefully allow her to be calm and not use our house as her toilet?

Additional info: My family doesnt regularly walk her. She wakes at 5am for her feeding and bathroom break. She's around 5-6 years old, in a healthy condition. This activity started around 5-8 months ago.

Keeping her in a cage all day and all night is not appropriate and that is a large part of the reason why you are having problems. And if you continue this, she is going to develop more emotional problems and medical problems as well.

First, get her a puppy pen like this one. It should be at least 5 feet across:

This kind of pen is easy to move around and set up. Set up the puppy pen and line it with a thick layer of newspaper... several sheets. Set her crate inside the pen (door open, so she can go into it and sleep). Her crate should have a soft lining - some old towels or an old blanket in it so she has a soft place to sleep. Set a water bowl and her toys in the pen.

This will allow her some freedom and allow her to move around, and it will help prevent serious joint problems which are painful and expensive to treat. If you keep her in the pen too long for too many years, she will get some flexion contractures of her hips that can only be fixed by intensive (and expensive) water therapy.

Walk her in the morning when she wakens, when you get home from school, and before you go to bed. This should be at least a half hour walk AM and after school, preferably longer, and until she does her evening business in the evening. In the afternoon, she is having the reaction she is having because she is both anxious and excited. Her anxiety can be related to the fact that she is so used to being penned in her cage, she doesn't know how to deal with freedom.

Pick her up out of the pen (or her crate if your parents refuse to buy a pen) often and hold her and cuddle her. That will make her less anxious when you take her out of the pen to take her outside to walk her. Then save your allowance and do odd jobs until you can afford to get a pen. Request one on Freecycle - you may be able to get one free.
