Alternative Kennel Tray?

Pythoness

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but Midwest's quality has gone downhill. It's really irritating me. When I bought my Lab, they had metal trays. I understand the reason why there are no longer metal trays, but the plastic ones they use now break - all the time. My current dog's crate tray has broken three times in the last two years - and considering they cost forty dollars a pop, that's completely ridiculous. I'm very annoyed.

Does anyone know of another (sturdier) brand of crate tray that sells seperately and will also fit Midwest's kennels?

Answer
Nope. My dogs also break the trays. I found that cutting a board to fit and just putting a sheet on it (wrapped under) works well. If the dog will eat the sheet, you can probably just use the board. Also, rubber mats (for horse stalls) work well. Just cut to the size you need. The dogs won't slip on these.

Would this work for a dog crate or no?

Answer
That is a carrier and is meant for short term transportation of dogs. If you're looking for a crate to use to start house training a dog/puppy, then this isn't a very good choice. You need something that you can actually see what's going on, if they've had any accidents, etc. and where the two of you can see each other. Although you generally put the dog in the crate when you're busy and can't watch it and don't want it to get mischievous (time out period), to sleep, etc. the dog will do better where they can see what's going on around them. This crate won't allow for that.

Additionally, if the dog does have an accident in the crate, if the carrier is made of material it may be harder to clean and get the odor out. Crates typically have a metal tray at the bottom that can be removed for easy cleaning/disinfecting.

Also, not sure what size dog you have, but the dog has to have room to lay down, stand up, turn around, etc. in a crate. The carrier is not designed to give them that much room.

Attached is a link for reasonably priced crates. There is actually a plastic crate that is comparable in price and is better suited for use than a dog carrier. It's the Pet Den Dog crate.

My dog is a Jack Russell how do I train him from soiling in the house?

He sleeps with me every night if I keep the door close he will let me know that he needs to go out, but if I leave the door open poor carpet get a dump. Help do you think he needs a little baby sister Jack Russell ?

Answer
You have got to crate train him. Crate training is NOT cruel so don't freak out. Your dog, once in the crate will whine and whine, but eventually he will find it as his safeplace. How old is your dog? Is he a puppy? Puppies up until a certain age cannot hold their eliminations so that may be one problem. Otherwise, go to Walmart or Petsmart and get a crate for a small dog. One that is completely open metal (not one of those plastic carrier deals) that has a removable plastic tray at the bottom. You can take it out and spray it with the waterhose. Good luck. I don't know any sites, but if you do decide to do the crate training, google crate training and you'll find lots of literature about crate training that will help you.

You also need to minimize the possibility of incessant barking that riles your neighbors and results in police showing up on your doorstep.

Here's what has worked for me:

Create an indoor den

Leaving a dog alone outdoors all day is a terrible idea. It guarantees problems with the neighbors and behavior problems from your dog. Further, you can't protect your dog from sudden, bad weather.

Use a crate if you or a surrogate come in during the day to let him out for a break. The rule of thumb is don't keep a dog in a crate longer than 4-hours at a stretch.

If no one is home, use a gate, that he can see out of, to create a den in a room such as the kitchen or laundry room.

Arrange a toilet area in the farthest part of the room using a doggy door to the outside or newspapers, pads or dog litter tray.

Create a haven

Don't let him have the run of the house especially if he's a puppy. A bored dog is a destructive dog and one that can harm himself by chewing or swallowing dangerous objects.

Have a favorite blanket, toy and comfortable bed in his crate or the room where you leave him during the day. He needs a comfortable place to nap during the day.

Create mental stimulation

I like to leave a Kong toy filled with peanut butter or other gooey treat. My dog happily spends the afternoon trying to get the treat. Another good toy is the Buster Cubes which can be filled with dry food.

Create pleasant sounds

Do you like to be a quiet house for hours on end? Leave the radio, TV or CD player on. Some owners tape their own voices and leave that playing all day. My dog loves classical music. Just make sure it's soothing music, no heavy metal bands, please.

Create sustenance

I don't like to leave food out. Bored dogs can overeat just as bored humans do. However, I do think dogs should have drinking water available any time they want it. Try leaving a bowl or two of water for him. If you can afford it, use a water dispensing product.

Create a soothing environment

One of the newest products available is an electric diffuser that releases Dog Appeasing Pheromones (DAP). These mimic the natural pheromones produced by lactating bitches to reassure puppies.

One study showed a 70% reduction in barking and whining when the DAP was used. Sounds weird may be a scent-sible solution for whining puppies.

Create unemotional leaving and return

Don't make a production when you leave and come home. Spend time with your dog (playing to tire him out and taking him to the potty) before you leave in the morning.

When you get home at night, try to wait 5 or 10 minutes before acknowledging him when you get home.

Consider - as a last resort - mood stabilizers

The drug clomipramine is sometimes prescribed for dogs that exhibit extreme hyperactivity or destructive behaviors when their owners are absent and when other treatments haven't been effective.

Think of it as Prozac for dogs. It's not addictive, but it's a last resort that should only be used under veterinarian control.

Can two guinea pigs live in a dog crate?

Just one of the regular ones with wire top and sides and metal tray (fleece as the bedding). It's 107cm long and 66cm wide.

Answer
unlike what someone else recommended, DO NOT use cedar shavings. they can cause respiratory problems.

fleece is a very good choice; my piggies love it! aspen shavings, kiln-dried pine shavings and carefresh are also good choices, but fleece is my absolute favorite.

that size would be acceptable (about the minimum), but i would recommend personally a C&C cage. they're very easy to make and quite inexpensive. www.guineapigcages.com

that being said, that size is much better than pet store cages, which are so sad and tiny.

Where can I get a replacement tray for my dog's crate?

My dog destroyed the plastic tray in her crate due to severe separation anxiety. Does anyone know a good place online where I can order another one?

Answer
Depending what brand it is, go on-line an google the manufacturer - they all sell parts for their crates.

If it's a smaller crate, as a last resort, take measurements and you may be able to find the right size metal sheet pan with edges at a restaurant supply outlet. Don't laugh, they work but it depends on the size of the crate. Whole and half sheet pans.
