EXTRA SMALL dog crates?

Emma L

I have a new 8 week old chihuahua and am looking for a crate that is about 12" long, 8" wide, and 10" tall. Does anyone know where I can find one for a somewhat affordable price??

Answer
Get a crate for your dog's adult size, not the puppy size. You'll save money that way. Many crates come with a divider so the puppy can be contained in a smaller area, then as the dog grows, the divider is removed.
Example: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753745

If you want a plastic crate and can't find them small enough in the dog section, look in the cat section. (My dogs have cat crates and cat beds. The size is right and for some reason cat stuff is often cheaper than dog stuff.)
.

Where can I buy a LARGE indoor dog crate for a decent price??

Jen

I have two large dogs that like to sleep together where can I purchase a crate (kennel) for them??

Answer
Try searching sites like e-bay- with two large dogs you may want to look at getting an XXL crate. There are a TON of different crate options on there and if you dont mind it being a wire crate you'll end up spending just over 100$ on the crate including shipping.

My parents are, finally, letting me get my own dog.

I'd preferably want a fluffy dog. c:

Price doesn't matter, I'm paying for it with my own money.
I'm very well aware of the price of a dog over its lifetime, but thank you.

What good for one person is NOT neccessarily good for another. So research carefully. I would recommend a Keeshound or Swedish Vallhund or American Eskimo, Cocker Spaniel, shetland sheepdog, Standard Schanuzer for an active teenage or Dachshund for a lazier teenager, I stay away from the other herding breeds such as Border Collie, Komondor, and Puli, there incrediable beautiful breeds, but there intelligent nature is a double edge sword, as they can proove to be very stubburn, but require experience owners .

Remember puppies cannot be left alone anymore then 2hours. They need extensive socialisation, attention and obedience trainning to ensure they become well developed adults.

Medium dog breeds 25 to 50 pounds
American Eskimo Dog 6-40lbs
American Water Spaniel 25-45lbs
Border Collie 30-45lbs
If Border Collies are so smart, then why aren't they easy to train?

If you are not a precise sort of trainer (most people aren't), then trying to train an intelligent Border Collie can be a frustrating task. Yes, they can pick up commands on two or three tries but they are also very perceptive and are constantly thinking. If, in teaching your dog to sit, you raise your right hand and say "Sit", the dog may pick that up the first time through. However, if the next time you repeat the command, you raise your arm at a different angle and use a slightly lower tone of voice or a different pace, a Border Collie will often pick up the subtle distinction and think that you are using an entirely new command. Border Collies have a difficult time learning to generalize, basically because it takes a dog that is less "critical" to be able to follow a sloppy command. Training a Border Collie can be like trying to teach a nerdy child that likes to overanalyze everything - it can be frustrating and an exhaustive exercise in patience.

What are the other problems with owning a smart dog?

Intelligence in dogs is a double-edged sword. Yes, Border Collies can learn lots of tricks and can have quite a large vocabulary but they also can learn lots of bad things too. Having a smart dog means waging a continual intellectual war with your dog, trying to outsmart them as they figure out each progressive intellectual step you take. Trying to confine a Border Collie can be an exercise in futility. Just when you put in a gate, they figure out how to get over (under) it. When you put in a door, they figure out how to push it open. You put in a latch and they figure out how to turn doorknobs. Some owners even swear that their Border Collies can pick combination locks - though their paws make it hard to turn the dial. If you do not enjoy engaging in intellectual warfare, especially with a non-human, a less "perceptive" and somewhat "denser" breed may be in order.

How do you solve a dog problem like this?

I have a large dog and he's destroying my yard. His urine is making urine spots, and his poop is everywhere on the grassy area. I was thinking about maybe getting a designated area for his poop and pee, but all the areas are full of plants my dad is growing. I only have the concrete part left. He is also an outdoor only dog, and I don't know what to do. I tried the dog pee pads, but whenever I come home, I always see swarms of flies buzzing around. Is there any ways that I can let my dog relieve himself, prevent flies, and I could also maybe make it myself? I have seen the prices at pet stores and some of the dog poop/pee crates are worth more than how much I bought my dog. Please help!

Answer
You can train a dog to go in one area only. Your dog maybe too old at this stage. How about cleaning up after him every day (I assume you already do so). Maybe ask your Dad if he can free up an area for the dog.

I would get the largest one that you can. You want him to have plenty of room to turn around when he is full grown. Depending on where you get one from the price can be from 50 to almost 200 dollars.

How much does it cost to fly your dog with you on the airplane?

dancechik

Is there a difference between the price if its flying in the cargo or if its with you on your seat? Does this cost vary for diff airlines.?

Answer
It varies between airline and where you're travelling.

When we flew with our two dogs from Ottawa to Vancouver it was about $150 per dog. This was the cost essentially of an extra, overweight bag. (Both dogs are about 50 pounds/22 kilos each and travel in large-sized dog crates).

When we flew with them from North America to Europe the cost was $350 (Cdn) per dog (one-way).

When we flew with them from India to North America it was almost $1000 for the two of them (but this was a few years ago).

We've tried to chose airlines that have good reputations for shipping pets and we've always travelled on the same flight. We've heard good things (and travelled with) KLM, Swiss Airways and Air Canada (although I think Air Canada has now changed their policies).

KLM (if you transit via Amsterdam) takes the dogs out of the crates during the layover, walks them, gives them fresh water and fresh newspaper in the crate. During our Swiss Airways short stopover we could see them waiting to get on the plane - and there was an airline employer next to them, monitoring them. In both cases, airline staff were friendly and called the baggage handlers to ensure that our dogs were indeed getting on the plane with us.

If you are lucky to have a small dog (which fits into a carrier which can fit under a seat), there are some airlines which let you take the dog into the cabin (and then you don't have to have the hassle of shipping them in a crate).

Happy dog travels!

What is the best dog crate to start out with?

My puppy will be 6 months old in December. I really want to start crate training him after we get him neutered which will be also around December as well. But I'm wondering what brand would be a good crate to get, that wouldn't be too expensive. My puppy is a small breed if that helps. So he doesn't need a huge crate. But just big enough for him to sit, turn around and sleep in possibly. I found one at Orchard Supply, for like 80 dollars. It also came with a divider.. to make it smaller. But I'm wondering if it would be better to buy one at lets say Pet Smart, or Pet Co. Where do you think I should buy a dog crate, and what brand is a good one to look out for. And how should I start crate training him, should I only have toys specifically his crate? and treats only for his crate too? thank you for the answers and advice in advance.
oh and when should I be putting him in the crate?? Should it only be for when I leave the house? Or should it be at night to when I go to sleep? Even though I really love having him sleep in my bed with me.. I'm wondering if it'd be better to have him sleep in a crate. Because a lot of times he likes to sleep under my bed too.

Answer
I would take your dog with you to a pet store and ask them, say you don't want to spend massive amounts. They'll understand.
They can show you best sizes, makes, prices etc!
If you want to crate train him, I'd keep dry food for in there, incase he knocks it over. And buy him some nice toys and a warm blanket.

Personally I wouldn't put my dogs in a crate, ever. I think its kinda mean.
But its your choice, I'd leave him in it when you go out, but make sure you be nice about putting him in, for short periods building them up slowly? Also as for bedtime.. That's totally your call. But my dog sleeps beside my bed and I wouldn't want her anywhere else.
