I think my dog has kennel cough?

She has been coughing for a straight 3 days now and it isn't stopping. Is there anything I can do to help her get better other than taking her to the vet? How serious is kennel cough? She is a beagle 10 yrs old and she is outside most of the time. Any suggestions?

You're dog most likely has a case of kennel cough. The seriousness of the case depends on the dog. In your case, it may be more severe or seem to be more severe than usual because you have an older dog. If she is outside all of the time, she could have developed allergies or gotten kennel cough from another dog in your neighborhood. It could also be old age.

Is she coughing up white gunk? This is a sign of kennel cough. Think of kennel cough like bronchitis. She will cough and cough and cough, and basically, it's mucus.

If it is kennel cough, your vet will give her an antibiotic, and she will take it, etc. If you have other dogs, bring them too, they should probably get a Bordetello shot, which prevents against kennel cough. If you have other dogs and they start coughing, they can also be sick, so you may end up getting more than one set of pills.

Whatever it truely is, I recommend going to the vet's.

I picked him up yesterday from an animal shelter, he was in there for 5 days. Hes been sniffling and he just started coughing earlier today. Then about 2 hours ago he threw up...alot. Hes acting sluggish and not himself. Im going to have to hold off on the vet til tuesday...until then what can i do??

Kennel cough is an upper respiratory infection in dogs, and no- you can't catch it from him. Bacteria and viruses are species specific. It might be caused by either a bacteria or a virus, and there are some of the dog diseases which can also cause the cough. Hopefully your dog was fully immunized at the kennel when he arrived or at least before you left. It's a very contagious condition among dogs, and not uncommon to have it happen in kennels where there are large numbers in close quarters. Hence the name. There's not a lot you can do for your dog until you get him to a vet, unfortunately. The vet can provide both antibiotics and cough relief medications. Until you can get to the vet, about all you can do is keep your dog warm and reasonably comfortable, with food and water available. Even with treatment, it may last for several weeks, but the cough will become less frequent and he will feel better as time goes on.

Has anyone's dog had kennel cough?

I ask this because there was a question by Monica Rae and she described the symptoms exactly of kennel cough. We got our dog from the pound and he has all his shots but developed kennel cough. He would get stiff as a board, gasp for breath and that would last for about 20 seconds. It's nothing to worry about. The vet and articles online say to rub the throat and talk calmly to the dog while that's happening. Eventually, it stops but it took about 6 weeks. No vet visit is needed. A lot of dogs get it, even when they have not been in a kennel.
My dog was vaccinated against it but got it anyway.

Both my dogs have had kennel cough, at separate times. My older dog got it from a puppy that came from the Humane Society and then a year later my new Lab puppy got from the vet's office (of all places). I was told by the vet once they have it they build an immunity to it and I am assuming it is a correct statement because my older dog never got it when my Lab puppy had it. Kennel Cough is extremely contagious and as I was told you neighbors dog up the street could get it and if your dog is down wind he could also get it. Your heart breaks when you dog is going thru it and there is nothing you really can do, but let it run its course.

My friend was given a 5yr old male Chihuahua , he was completely house trained and did not mark any furniture of the previous owners. he has been living in a kennel and breeding / producing No puppies for a year . My question is if I take him as a house dog will he pee on everything i own? The kennel owner says you can never bring a male that has bred back into a house . I don't want him to be homeless or worse , but have new furniture and carpet in a new house and husband NOT an animal person Infomation of experienced owner please!
to Jen , no he has been outside with 40 other dogs , peeing and pooing on cement and marking every corner and post . I would rather say no than say yes and feel guilty for not wanting the dog . I know he needs a home , I don't need a problem .

First sadly the kennel owner is right. An intact or neutered male who has experienced coitious (as they say on Big Bang Theory *0) ) will mark its territory 99% of the time. I liken this to a guy with a vasectomy. The urge to mate does not leave & when a dog wishes to mate they mark. However; you do mention that he was housebroken before entering the life of a stud. Let me ask you this. Does your friend have him in the house? If so how is he doing? That may be your answer right there.
I had a dog that I had to give up due to the fact that he was cryptorchid (meaning he had one testicul that never descended) and the breeder told me he was fixed before I bought him. I had him properly neutered when I got him he was 6 months old then, and according to the said breeder who had lied to me before he was a virgin. He marked & marked for three years. I did everything I know. I have house trained dogs from the age of 11 and I could not get him to stop. Dogs mark with both urine and feces btw.
I am an animal LOVER but I needed to re-home this dog. He ended up having a terrific life with another animal lover who had allergies and lots of $$. She had had her two car garage set up with dog furniture and a tv so she could hang out with the dog, with heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. There was drainage He was a Schipperke so he was hypo allergenic as well. He needed to stay in the garage with visitation from mom but he has been doing great.

Bottom line though. You & your friend may not find an ideal situation such as the one I've described (I have this thing with luck) but if you are open and honest and look into Chihuahua rescues I am sure the little burrito will be fine. Don't ask something of your hubby like that hon. Marriage is hard enough without this kind of added pressure. As I said I am an animal LOVER and could not deal with it.

How do you keep a husky from breaking out of a plastic dog kennel?

We purchased a plastic dog kennel that snaps together on all four sides for potty training purposes. After feeling confident to come home and not have a mess all over my house for the first time since we got the little guy, he has discovered a way to break out. I believe he is pushing against the side till he can pop open the metal door. Any suggestions of how to prevent this would be greatly valued!!!

Be EXTREMELY careful with this.. more than one dog has accidentally gutted themselves with the crate door post and DIED by escaping from an airline kennel...

I'll try to find a link on this when I get home.

Suffice it to say - dogs have managed, thru force, to unlatch the top part of the door either by pulling in or bracing against the rear and pushing out... and then squished through the opening.... HOWEVER the post did horrific damage to the dog's abdomen on the way through. - to keep this from happening you can drill a small hole on the top and bottom of the crate door lip and zip tie the door shut as well as using the latches.

I've found wire crates to work better (and yes, I've augmented sides with zip ties as needed when I've had a dog clever enough to dismantle the crate).

I live in GA where the ground is mostly sand and brown dirt mixed. I let my dog in at night, but during the day I keep him in a 10X6 dog kennel/run. He gets this dried up cement like mixture stuck to his fur because he digs all over the kennel to stay cool. Don't get me wrong, I put sun screen shade fabric on one side and the roof, and I give him water. Its just hot down here. I can't keep him inside though, because he pees when I leave him alone. I want to put something on the floor of the kennel, but I don't know what. I thought about cedar chips but wouldn't he just dig through those? Anybody have a solution?

straw or shavings would help but they do need to be changed out pretty regular due to urine and poop smells.
I used to use paver stones/bricks in mine or pea gravel works well.
right now my kennels are on cement and I like it. the cement stays cool and I can just spray it off.

It depends on the kennel. The one we take our yorki poo to has 3 different kinds of rooms. Plain (and only our dog is in that kennel); private room with french doors and a fancy raised bed (princess or racing car) and a private room complete with TV and raised bed. each one is slightly more in price than the other; but so are hotel rooms. They are walked 4x a day and you can buy play time etc.

I'd like a professional name, of course nothing too dumb and corny or anything. What do you think of CanineHerps? I thought of that name because dogs are, of course called canines (or canids) and we associate reptiles & amphibians with herping, herpetoculture, and herpetology and I thought that name would fit, but what are some others that can tell people its a place for dogs and reptiles?

And sorry, but unless you're going to be a "satellite" agency to your local Humane Society and deal only with rescue dogs, I doubt you're going to get much help from the folks on this forum. We detest puppy mills.
