Puppy pooped in open crate?

Sally

Our English Staffy is 8weeks (we got him yesterday). We are crate training him. Today I brought his crate in the lounge room and left it for him to go in and out as he pleased. I could see he needed to do a poo (started sniffing) so I took him to his puppy pad. He wouldn't go on the pad so he walked inside his crate (1metre away) and pooped in there! I think the crate might be too big (it's 90cm by 55cm). He pooped on his litter blanket (given by the breeder). Is this just puppy behavior or did I do something wrong?

I'm looking for the ultimate dog bed for large dogs. If your dog is the size of a cat, please don't be a jerk and waste my time. thank you :)
ok sugar that's a little too ultimate. my dog only jumps on the bed when it thinks i'm not looking

I made Callie three bean bags. They are an oval shape, about 1 metre by 90cm. They have an inner which is completely sealed with around two bags of polystyrene beans inside. The outers are removable for washing. I put velcro on the first, but have used a zip on the other two.
Callie just loves them, I suppose it is because the beads generate more warmth when she is sleeping on them.

I took one to my Dad's house [where I stay quite a lot] so I didn't have to keep taking one back and forth. The bean bag lives in her dog crate, which is always left open.
