Where should I leave my dog while I'm on vacation?

Lady Perso

Basically I'm asking the question above and what should I do?
Also, the place has to be in Houston, Texas.
Taking my little dog with me is not a choice, my parents won't take her. Last time I left my dog without seeing her was only for 3 days, she had tons of food and water but ate or drank absolutely nothing. This time it'll be for a week and I'm afraid she might go into depression. Taking her to some pet hotel or vet clinic to be watched may not be an option unless you recommend a good but affordable(cheap) place to leave my precious little chihuahua.

Answer
Take her to a veterinary hospital and board your dog while on vacation.

How do I find boarding for my dogs?

Q. So here's the situation. I need to find boarding for the dogs listed. Normally my dad's training partner would've looked after them but he is out of town at the moment.

A Yorkshire Terrier
A Belgian Malinois
American pit bull x4
Wolf Dog
Fila Brasileiro

The Malinois and one of the pit bulls are trained in bite work so I know that makes it harder to find some place that accepts them. The Fila HATES all strangers with a passion so again that makes it tough. The other dogs are quite social. My aunt said she might look after my yorkie if it's okay with her husband but I'm not holding my breath. Does anyone knows of a place in California (or a place that's on the way to Houston, TX) that will accept ALL of my dogs? We need to leave Tuesday to go to a wedding.

Answer
I personally don't know of any but I recommend you look for training kennels that specifically train guard dogs and ask if they offer boarding services, that way you know the people are knowledgeable when it comes to your dog's training. I think you're gonna have a hard time finding someone that will accept the wolf hybrid though...

Tips for moving from California to Houston with two dachshunds?

I'm moving from California to Houston with my two Dachshunds. It'll take four days driving about 8 hours each day and spending the night in different places. I need advice about the best way to do this (feeding time, potting breaks, etc)
How can I make this trip comfortable for my dogs.

Answer
When my family drove from California to Louisiana and back, we would start 6 or 7 in the morning and drive until 6 or 7 in the evening. However, we would stop for lunch and other necessities. You will love Houston, I go there every month. Downtown is fantastic, Westheimer is one of the main avenues in Downtown Houston. They have art, theater, museums and a thousand other things to do. Be sure to check out the underground stores during the week. Make sure you keep plenty of water on board at all times and make stops throughout the day to give your dogs time to stretch their legs. The dogs will be fine, we brought along my short haired dachshund and she came through with flying colors. Try not to let them eat too much while they are in the car, they could get sick at their stomach. Please make sure you have your dogs on a leash before you allow them out of the car, it only takes a minute for disaster to happen.

How much does a hip replacement for a dog usually cost?

SUNNY

I have a pug that is 9 and approx 22lbs. I haven't made an apt for the vet yet but would like an idea of what I could possibly be looking at. Lets just say 1 hip and not THR (total hip replcement). Thanks!

Answer
In Houston, TX the cost of a hip replacement is somewhere around $6000 for one hip. The price will be different in different states and with different vets. Since your dog is small the cost may be a little lower because less anesthesia and smaller hardware. You will want to make sure that the vet you choose to do the surgery is a board certified orthopedic surgeon. Your vet should be able to give you a referral and if not you can find one in your area at www.acvs.org

Sorry, I wasn't specific enough with my last question. I'm trying to find out what the Health Board rules are regarding pets on restaurant or bar patios in Houston.

Answer
(f) Prohibiting animals.
(1) Except as specified in item (2) of this subsection, live animals may not be allowed on the premises of a food establishment.
(2) Live animals may be allowed in the following situations if the contamination of food, clean equipment, utensils, linens, and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles cannot result:
a. Edible fish or decorative fish in aquariums, shell fish or crustacea on ice or under refrigeration, and shellfish and crustacea in display tank systems;
b. Patrol dogs accompanying police or security officers in offices and dining, sales, and storage areas, and sentry dogs running loose in outside fenced areas;
c. In areas that are not used for food preparation and that are usually open for customers, such as dining and sales areas, service animals that are controlled by the individual with a disability, or service animals in training when accompanied by an approved trainer, if a health or safety hazard will not result from the presence or activities of the service animal;
d. Pets in the common dining areas of institutional care facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, group homes, or residential care facilities at times other than during meals if:
[1] Effective partitioning and self-closing doors separate the common dining areas from food storage or food preparation areas;
[2] Condiments, equipment, and utensils are stored in enclosed cabinets or removed from the common dining areas when pets are present; and
[3] Dining areas including tables, counter tops, and similar surfaces are effectively cleaned before the next meal service; and
e. In areas that are not used for food preparation, storage, sales, display, or dining, in which there are caged animals or animals that are similarly confined, such as in a variety store that sells pets or a tourist park that displays animals.
(3) Live or dead fish bait may be stored if contamination of food, clean equipment, utensils, linens, and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles cannot result.
(Ord. No. 99-1346, § 1, 12-15-99; Ord. No. 07-1051, § 2(Exh. A), 9-12-07)

So the answer is no, pets are not allowed on the patios of restaurants or bars. But I have seen many people tie thier dogs to the railing on the outside of the patio and sit at one of the tables beside the railing.

What is the cheapest airline? And is there an airline that will let you bring a yorkie on board?

~aTm~

Is there an airline that is decently cheap to get from IAH(Houston) to TUS(Tucson)...?

and is there an airline that will let you bring a yorkshire terrior on board for free?

Answer
If you buy a ticket from southwest.com at least two weeks prior to take off you could get it for A HECK OF A LOT CHEAPER than any other airline. && they do let you bring a dog on board because I brought my boston terrier on board just about a week and a half ago.. And Im actually leaving tomorrow with him again!

Example of how much cheaper Southwest is:::

I bought a ticket for $89 from southwest exactly two weeks before I was to leave... I checked Expedia, Cheaptickets, Travelocity, etc.. And they were no cheaper than $267.
