Best way to get a pet shipped from another state?

Saphire

My friend is selling a puppy but she lives in MO and i live in CA. Is there anyway for her to ship it to me at low cost (under $100). I looked up some info online, but all I could find were pet relocators. If you have had any experience with this, how did you handle it?

Answer
The easiest is by air. Unfortunately, all the airlines have gone up this year. I ship everything in a 500 series crate (extra large). Continental $299 (plus taxes, fuel surcharges, etc) if crate + dog are 99 lbs or less. $369 (plus fees) for 100 to 149 lbs. Right now, they are the cheapest. United is the most expensive at around $800. Delta $577 + tax & fees....Northwest is just slightly less.
Again, this is with 500 crates, and always slightly over 100 pounds. Either way, other than Continental, all the airlines have gone up drastically this year.
There are places that do it by truck. They do a few trips a month coast to coast at substantially less money. I've never used them and would not recommend them.

Often times it's cheaper to fly there yourself and carry the dog on (if small enough) or check them as baggage. There's still a fee to check as baggage ( with United, Delta, & Northwest & American), but it's not as high as shipping via "cargo". Contitnental only does "cargo", they don't allow you to check the dog as baggage.

PS Delta and Northwest no longer require health certificates for the US and Canada when travelling with the dog as checked baggage. Each state requires a rabies vaccine...but nobody has ever check mine.

how much do it cost to give a dog there shots?

i am thinking about getting a dog/puppy.

Answer
Short answer: If you're worried about how much vaccines are, you can't afford a dog.

Long answer: If you give vaccines yourself, $20 or so for the series. However, I do not recommend this if you do not have experience with veterinary work and if you don't have epinephrine on hand. At a vet clinic, expect to pay between $40 and $150 every few weeks for vaccinations and the office fee while the puppy is receiving his puppy series of vaccinations, then the same charge yearly. Current protocols recommend vaccinating every three years AFTER the puppy series is done, but many vet clinics, boarding facilities, and training classes still require proof of yearly vaccinations.

Care expenses for a dog add up quickly. Quality dog food is at least $40 for a 30-lb bag. Safe toys and treats are expensive. Depending on the dog's breed, you will need to pay for professional grooming or invest in the tools to do it yourself. This can be as simple as a grooming glove or curry comb for a short-coated breed, or as complicated as several different combs, brushes, and rakes plus a forced-air dryer specifically for dogs for other breeds. You will need to pay license fees in your community. You will probably want to spay/neuter your pet, which runs in the vicinity of $100 - $500 depending on where you live and the size of the animal. You will want to go to at least a few months of training classes to assure your new pet and you are working well together toward obedience. You will need to replace items that your puppy chews. You will need to purchase a safe crate to confine the puppy in when you cannot watch it-- $20 - $150 for that, too.

Add in unforeseen costs like emergency vet bills (most puppies will need at least one emergency visit before one year of age-- usually due to something they ate) and you should have the means to pay for this care. If you would have to deny your pet veterinary care due to cost, reconsider owning a pet.

Dogs are expensive. Purchase price is a mere fraction of the expenses. Costs vary widely for all aspects of care, but plan at least a few thousand a year for non-emegency essentials.

Questions

Answer
As baggage...an "extra large" (500) crate will fit all the 727-777 series...airbus, MD 80-90, DC9. As cargo pretty much anything except Embraer RJ's.
Giant crates have a much smaller fleet to deal with.

Answer
It's going to cost more than $500. Don't get me wrong I'm sure you have already found one somewhere for $500 but the odds of that pup's parents having been thoroughly health-tested are slim to none. That's just what you need -- a $500 puppy that will end up costing you $3,000 in vet bills during the first year....

And once you've found and afforded a puppy and your parents have paid for food, then who pays for the puppy's first vet visit? How about the second, third and fourth visits? (Puppies have to go through a series of vaccinations.) What about dog bed? crate? collar and leash? toys? spay/neuter surgery? puppy classes so that you have a well-socialized dog?

And once all those things are paid for, who's going to care for it once you go back to school? It will still need to be walked and let out several times during the day, and it won't be fully housebroken by the time you go back to school in the fall so there will still be much training to do or else you'll have messes all over the house... your parents would be just thrilled about that...

Another question - initial pet costs.?

The creatu

What are the initial costs for a dog? Such as the buying price, neutering, etc. Thanks knowledgeable people.

Answer
Cost of pet: $0-2,000+ sometimes you find a stray, sometimes you invest in a pup with titled, tested parents. The averages would probably be $50-200 for a shelter dog, $1000-2000 for a pup from a responsible breeder.

Spaying/Neutering: $0-300, many rescues come already altered and there are many low-cost programs for $25-50, but a traditional vet will charge $100-200 and if there are exceptional circumstances (like a b**** that is very small or a spay/abort) it may be $300.

Equipment: budget $20 for a small dog's crate, up to $150 for a giant breed's crate, $50 for puppy collar, adult collar, training collars/harnesses, license tag, and quality leashes, and $50-100 for a bed, toys, etc depending on how elaborate you want to get.

Initial vet visits: puppy shot series, worming, and check-ups for the first year: $50-100

Emergency fund for replacing the chewed-up coffee table, surgery to get the car keys back (puppies eat weird things!), etc, budget $500 for the first year.

Other expenses during your dog's lifetime including training classes, take at least an eight-week obedience class ($150-300 per eight weeks, more for some dog sports), food (I usually assume $1/day for a medium dog and approximate from there for a smaller or larger one), continued vet care (including flea prevention, worming, and emergencies) for $100-500 per year, and equipment replacements or upgrades of $50-100 per year.

Cost of getting a dog, low estimate: $750 for the first year (if dog is free and already altered and no emergencies occur), high estimate: $4000 for the first year (for well-bred pup, surgery, top-of-the-line equipment and at least one training class and one emergency/big puppy damage). And then about $500-1000 for each year after that, assuming no major problems.
