I already know all the basics i need to know for getting my new puppy like making sure it gets its shots and de-wormings, having a crate for him, toys to play with, giving him plenty of water and making sure he eats enough a day, giving him plenty of exercise, etc. But i'm interested in any tips and helpful hints that will help make life a little easier for my pup and me. Anything you may have learned throughout the years.
Thanks (:

Answer
Dont take your animal to dog parks

Dont take your animal to places were large numbers of animals have been, example petsmart, petco and other places like this.
(You never knwo if other animals are utd on shots)

Always keep your animal on a leash regardless of where you are b/c ppl can sue you without a leash.

Always carry an extra poop bag with you on walks and a treat for the pup

Freeze teething toys for extra teething relief

Kong are great toys that work the mind of your animal. You can fill these with peanut butter and freeze them for a treat that will keep your dog happy for 45 min- to an hour.

Don't use discount clinics! (They killer one of my dogs due to improper care)

Always make sure that your animal wears their tag on their collor just in case they get off the leash.

Keep good records of the vet and shots that your animal has received! ( Should you ever need to board the animal they will require these!)

Yogart with an animals food helps bacterial infections and digestion.

If your animal has food allergies you will need a non- grain based food with the first ingredent being non- grain... example Beef... chicken,.. rice... ( Normally organic food lines)

Pet Tab vitamins are the BEST vitamins I have found on the market!!!!

Remember that training takes time.( It took 2 years and my dog is still learning to listen to new commands) But don't give up! Your animal loves you and wants to please you.. but sometimes acciedents happen

Answer
It depends on what style and quality of crate you want.

For an already crate trained dog you might get mesh crate.

For travel, you'd need a special soft-sided carrier that fits under the seat on the airplane.

For use in a car, choose a special seat belt instead. They are safer than crates. If you must use a crate in the car, choose a plastic one. They are less likely to injure a dog if they break on impact.

For home, for general use and for crate training (which is what I assume you want), choose between a plastic (airline) crate or a wire crate.

If your dog is shy or barky, go for the plastic--it's more den-like and calming. If your dog is confident and curious, and/or you enjoy seeing him from anywhere in the room, choose a wire crate--it has better ventilation and a better view.

Here's a link to a good, middle quality plastic crate:
http://www.upco.com/vari-kennel-small-top-handle-olive-color
That one is $38.95. Shipping is $5.50.

Here's a link to a good, middle quality wire crate:
http://www.upco.com/general-cage-folding-cage-gold-side-door-only-small
That one is $79. Shipping will actually be a bit less, $4.00.

With this company the cost of shipping goes down the more your order totals. You may find other online stores or catalogs with lower prices, but double check the shipping. That's usually where they get you, especially on crates. Usually UPCO has the best prices in my experience.

You can find similar crates at your local pet store, usually for a lot more. You can find cheaper crates, both in price and quality, at discount stores like Walmart.

Make sure the crate actually fits your dog. I have a crate that claims to be suited for a Great Dane, but it is actually too small for my German Shepherd.

Your dog should be able to stand naturally (head up) without bumping his head. He should be able to turn around easily, and lie flat on his side with his legs extended. It should be no larger than that if you intend to use it for crate training.

Over-sized crates permit an untrained dog to set aside a section of the crate for toileting. A crate that is just big enough to comfortably lie in discourages crate soiling because dogs don't like to soil where they sleep.
