Why is that the media only broadcast certain dog attacks?

My Pony

I don't get this and am just looking for opinions to maybe understand this better.
Why is it when a Pit bull, Rotwieller, German shepard, or any other dog that's stereotyped as "aggressive or vicious" attacks someone weither provoked or not it get plastered all of the news and in the newspaper for days and made into a huge ordeal. But when a Lab, St. bernard, or any other dog stereotyped as "a good family dog" attacks someone weither provoked or not it's never plastered anywhere and if it is its for like a day then its no big deal.
I have 2 pits and had a lab but had to put my lab to sleep because she continued attempted attacks on everyone including me. She's the only dog I've ever owned that I ever put in a kennel and it was only after her 1 first attack on me and 1st attempted attack on my moms puppy. I gave her 1 month and attempted to train her but she continually tried to attack everyone including a professional dog trainer. I had no choice but to put her down because it wasnt getting better and couldnt risk her attacking anyone else especially a child. My 2 pits have never lunged* at anyone or even attempted attack on another animal but yet they are still stereotyped as the vicious fighting dog to most people.
So having owned dogs on "both" sides I think the media needs to be reinformed on what aggressive and vicious means and that its not the breed of the dog, its actually the dog itself. But in actual reality it isn't even the dog thats bad, it's people in general owner and/or victim. "Bad" dogs come from bad owners and/or provoked or abused by bad people.

*****i know this sounds like a rant but I really do want other opinions on this so maybe I can understand the method behind it. Honest opinions only give reasons behind your opinions you can even use personal experiences. I'm honestly just trying to understand.******

Answer
Have you tried flying a plane into a long suspension bridge or into a skyscraper?

The media - esPECIally tv - require shock-horror in order to attract the type of people who watch tv (my tv gets turned on about once a year, to watch the local IRB Rugby 7s tournament - life's too short to waste in front of the idiot box! However, when my radio station announced the first plane hitting the first tower on what was 11 Sept.2001 in the USofA, but the 12th where I am, I switched my set on and watched in horror from midnight to 6am).
Alfred Hitchcock very successfully scared lots of us with "The Birds", where our feathered friends turned against us.
Naturally that inspired a host of imitators where other of our animal friends turned against us - those nice honey bees became "Attack of the Killer Bees"; those nice doggies became "Cujo".

Things like "Rambo" and "The Terminator" don't really scare us - that sort of thing doesn't happen to "us". But the possibility of being turned on by our "friends" DOES terrify us (as with an episode of "The Avengers", where the family cat was made to claw its owner to death). The thought of being eaten alive REVULSES us.
Hence the attraction to the media of "Dog Kills Child" and "Dog Kills Woman then Drags the Body Around".

Next is the "Give a dog a bad name" syndrome.
Back in the 1930s to about 1960, anyone who was nipped by a dog reported it as being an Alsatian if it had prick ears, a Labrador if it was black and didn't have prick-ears, a Collie if it had a shaggy coat.
Then the Dobermann became the popular attacker.
Then the Rottweiler became the popular attacker.
And now the Pit Bull Terrier is the popular attacker.

There is no doubt that SOME members of each breed earned that reputation - survivalists and criminals want to scare rivals away from the HQ, so get hold of the biggest, strongest, most ferocious dogs they can, then train them to be savage. A nasty case a few years ago involved a lawyer who was "looking after" the guard dogs of 2 of his clients while the clients were in gaol - and the dogs escaped from their inadequate enclosure and mauled & killed. GREAT for the media who could get pics of the places where the attacks had happened and could record eyewitness tales!
And naturally they named the breed involved exactly as did the witnesses who followed the "Give a dog a bad name" rule.
If you have tracked down actual investigations you will find that what is reported in the media is rarely the actual breed or crossbreed "as wot done it".
But there ARE characteristics of the bites inflicted by particular "breeds". As examples, GSDs tend to inflict a single bite that stops the person and leaves up to 4 deep painful-but-survivable punctures; whereas PBTs tend to tear a chunk out then come back for another, which sends the victim into shock. (Too many people - yourself included - forget that the PBT has Terrier genes. And a characteristic of Terriers is the shaking action with which they kill vermin. Whereas a characteristic of Bulldogs is to just hold on forever.)

But in simple terms....
The media:
(1) Report what attracts an audience and so sells advertising space/time.
(2) Name the breed as whatever is scariest of the breeds that the "Give a dog a bad name" eye-witnesses said.

And FYI:
⢠The time to start training a dog is the moment you get it home - at that stage you use only reward-reinforcement methods.
⢠The time & place to start SERIOUS training is in a training club class that begins when Pup is 18-22 weeks old - NOT wait until it is an uncontrollable adult with a bad attitude.

how long of a rest should dogs have before they fly on on airplane again?

hj

I'm thinking about taking a trip and want to bring my dogs along because I don't know if i can trust other people looking after it? But before even considering that I want to know how much stress dogs have when flying. Any side effects? How long should I wait between flights before they would be ok to fly again?

Answer
depends on the dog, and how well they travel.

My dog travels well.. he was on a plane twice within a week.

Do check with the airline in advance and find out what arrangements need to be made to fly with your dogs.. you cant just show up at the airport and bring your dogs.

If your dogs are stressed easily about travel, or are nervous or easily stressed in general, You'd be better off to find a good boarding kennel while you travel... your vet or groomer could reccommend one.

Grreat Choice Portable Kennel to fly dogs?

Q. So I will be flying my dogs for the first time in about a month. I just bought 2 portable carriers made by the Grreat Choice brand. Mainly because the tag says IATA and USDA approved, and because the top part doesn't have a "lock" but nuts and bolts. My dogs are around 11-12 lbs each, they are miniature dachshunds, but one of them used to have really bad anxiety before we got him a "sister", so a few years ago I owned a PetMate carrier and when he was left there, I came to find he chewed a whole in between the vents and got out. This Grreat Choice carriers seems a bit more sturdy and the fact that it secures better makes me more comfortable, but I'm afraid he may do that while in the plane? Note they are NOT flying in the cabin with me but as cargo. He's gotten better with his separation anxiety, hasn't done anything crazy since we got the other dog 4 years ago but since they've never been on a flight I just have my hesitations. We will be flying from TX to AK so probably 11 hours total?
I bought them now to start leaving them there during the day for short periods of time and they start getting acclimated, so hopefully that will help and the fact that I'll specify them to put their kennels together during the flights.

Has anyone used these to fly? all the reviews I've read are about daily use at home and crate-training but nothing about traveling by air.
Thanks in advance :o)

Answer
I use Pet-mate products for my dogs only issues I have had are with the Kennel Cab style carriers with the latches not wanting to stay put.

I own the Vari-Kennel which has ventilation panels on each side and they are extremely durable I have had mine for 4 almost 5 years and still look brand new. We travel out of state to shows and vacations often and these are the best!

Starting a Dog Kennel!?

Now, Deer

I want to start my own dog kennel. I have 5 acres and was wondering if you get a good profit. I was planning to have at least ten dogs a night at the price of $25. After building each separate runs and a Kennel and a larger run...A grand total of about $3000-$3500 bucks.
Would I get a lot out of it. I am a very experienced dog person. I would be pulling in about $1250 in a 5 day week...Then subtracting food and electricity and dog needs it'd be around, $1050.
Anyways if you know anything about dog kennels and how to start one, answer here! Also, if you run your own small homey kind of dog kennel...Please give me some advice :)

Answer
Think about the following...

Insurance in case a dog gets injured.
Insurance in case a worker gets bit.
Legal representation in case of a lawsuit (owner doesn't accept insurance payment as sufficient or insurance company not covering incident)
Department of Health Services regulations for this kind of business.
Labor Department requirements for employees of this kind of business.
The ability to provide 24 hour supervision (even when you want to go out of town or are sick)
Heating and A/C or other cooling system (i.e. misting)
Safety measures like a fire alarm system direct to the fire department and automatic sprinkler system.
Evacuation plan (in case of flood, fire, etc) with accessible vans, crates, leashes, etc and an alternate facility willing to take your dogs in an emergency.
How to keep the business a float when you are not a max capacity.
Cleanliness - workers to clean, safe chemicals, supplies, waste disposal, etc
Things needed to be handy to break up an unexpected dog fight.
Canine first aid training for employees and supplies on site.
Contracted service with a nearby vet hospital open 24 hours.
Bookkeeping supplies (customer files, dog vaccination records, owner care preferences, budget, appointments, employee scheduling, etc)
Staff to manage customer calls and appointments, take in dogs, evaluate new dogs, keep records, clean, provide maintenance of grounds, give direct care and supervision to dogs - one person can't do it all.
Staff accommodations (probably required) such as break room, toilet, and hot water.
Bedding, cots, bowls, leashes, and other dog supplies that need to be replaced periodically.
Phone and computer access with the need to communicate with owners who are sometimes out of the state or country for vacation and the bills to show for it.
Facility maintenance to keep everything in safe, functioning order and appealing to customers.
Proper storage facilities for food (so you are not invaded by rats or have mold) and waste (to keep flies, smells, and disease away).
A back up system for water in case your primary system fails.

If you plan to put dogs in kennels alone and feed them and provide for only basic needs without the ability to provide baths, nail trims or medications; manage multiple owners unique requests (i.e. storing special foods for different dogs, protection for dogs who are at risk for sunburn, daily toothbrushing); have help to move dogs quickly to a group location for play and back to kennels; or have help to provide the dogs with interaction and affection; you will really limit the clients who want to leave their dogs with you and may find that you are not at capacity. Check out the other providers in your area. Take tours of the facililties and learn what your competition is doing. I know I would rather drive an hour and pay a little more to take my dogs to a place that gives me piece of mind that the dogs will be well cared for and as happy there as at home (or more) or leave them at home with a visiting caretaker/dog walker or neighbor stopping by a couple of times a day than settle for a dreary place close by where they will not receive much attention. And, you need a LARGE clientele to have 10 dogs 7 days a week 365 days a year.

How common is kennel cough and how does a dog get it?

Shaz

My dog just got kennel cough and i just want some background information on it.

Answer
Kennel cough is very common if you go to the pound it runs ramped there, the reason for it is that Kennel cough ia a virus and it is passed through the air, just like people with colds and when they cough or sneeze, the virus flies in the air, all a dog has to do is breathe it and they will get it. If you have other dog in the house you should separated them or they will get it too. There is a vaccine that they give that sometimes prevents dogs from getting it. How can i get my dad to let me have this dog?

Yesterday i went to a last hope dog kennel and i found a gorgeous sweet laid back calm dog. He is a staffordshire bull terrier mix with something else. He has a brindle coat but the sad thing is he is going to get put to sleep in 13 days. My dad thinks its gonna run down the street and bite people. He has never seen the dog before. I tried to get him to go look at him but he refuses to. Someone please help me find ways to convince him to let me have him.

Answer
Is he allowing you to get a dog of any kind? If he's not convinced at getting a dog then it will be very difficult.

No doubt he's probably concerned about getting a staff cross because of all the negative media. They actually are normally very people friendly and can make fantastic family dogs. I know some people with full staffs and they say they are the most loving dogs they've had and very sweet. Staffs can be very sweet and are adorable.

There is no reason to assume they are going to bite somebody! Most staffs wouldn't hurt a fly, the problem is when you get the wrong people trying to own them and making them aggressive. This is what all the bad media has done! There are now so many staffs in rescue centres because of all the bad media.

It's like with Rottweilers etc aswell, many people think they are monsters when many, many of them are just big softies and very sweet.

The least your dad could do is meet them for himself and see what they are really like.

You should find as much articles and positive media on the Staffordshire Bull Terrier as possible, there is a lot on the internet and get a book on them so he can read it for himself. If he reads about them he will find that actually they can make very, very loving family dogs. They used to have a great rep as one of the best family dogs.

I'm sure when he reads positive information on the staff, he will come around. Also get him to look at pictures of them and remind him that in a week they will be put to sleep unless you take them in. I'm sure he couldn't resist then, they are so adorable especially when their mouth is open, it looks like they are smiling.

This is what irresponsible and idiotic owners who shouldn't be allowed any kind of dog and the media have done to some dog breeds. Very sad.

How do I get my dog adjusted to being at a kennel while I am away?

Lesley C

I am going on vacation without the family dog this time. She has never been in a kennel. We are flying out of town for three to four days over the holidays but cannot take her on the plane and don't want to drive 15 hours with a dog to our destination. Plus many hotels are not dog-friendly.

Answer
Just inspect the boarding kennel before you leave your dog there, and provided you are happy with what you see (and smell!!) and feel comfortable with the owners etc., go on your holiday! Believe me, she's not going to fade away in 3/4 days in any case, much as she'll certainly miss you. Dogs in kennels actually have loads of things to occupy them - if only the other dogs. But there's always lots going on in kennels and my experience (I've worked in Boarding Kennels) is by the time they are shut in their beds, they zonk out. Many kennels will take their boarders out for walks during their stay too.

If you don't like what you see when you check the place out - move on. Some kennels are better than others, but if the boarders in there when you visit look happy and well cared for (water bowls topped up etc.), you have nothing to worry about. Honestly.

ps If you are seriously worried that your girl won't cope with Boarding, have you considered having a home-sitter in to be with her in your own home?

What type of ducks are good in hardy Wisconsin weather?

best dog kennel for flying on American Kennel Club AKC Beefhide Knotted Bones - medium 4 inch - 12 ...
best dog kennel for flying image

shotsallar

I am looking into getting a few ducks this summer. I have a large empty dog kennel (and I'd build a house for them) and was thinking about getting 2-4 ducks.

What type of ducks can handle extreme weather (when provided with shelter) and preferably do not fly?

Answer
I think mallards are the best. They are the only wild duck that is breed. Any other duck is breed for meat and eggs. I can't imagine eating my own ducks. When they are 3-5 month, you can release them into the wild where they will live with other ducks. If you don't buy them, they will be force fed and be slaughter at 2-3 month anyways. I hope you get mallards.

Can anyone with a private jet fly my dog to Nicaragua?

Kelly Ross

I'm trying to fly to Nicaragua on April 3rd. I would LOVE to take my dog with me, she's a Labrador Retriever mix. She is a little over weight which that's whats holding me back from taking her. She weights about 90lbs. The max a dog, the kennel and the food can weight is 100lbs. The kennel itself is about 27lbs. I would really like to know if anyone would take my dog and how much would they charge to take her to Nicaragua for me, on a private jet. Would that be possible?

Answer
Are you moving there? The quarantine times are around 30 days once she arrives. A private jet runs about 1600 - $2500 per flight hour so depending on where you live you can estimate your costs.

I have 2 dog kennels and they are on dirt well the dirt is very hard and it is not soaking up the dog urine and it smells in there i clean and spray it down 2 day but it is not working and the fly's are getting in there and biteing my dogs so what can i do or put in there to help with the poo and pee?

Answer
I'm NOT trying to be mean, I honestly want to help, so if something comes across as mean, know that I didn't mean it that way.

Is it possible for you to keep your dogs inside more often, and housetrain them if they already arent?

Another idea is to have an area with gravel or another kind of dirt (with OUT fertalizer) and designate that as their potty area? Maybe add a "pee post" in it so they learn to go there as opposed to the other area.

Make sure you clean it out every day if not more than once a day. If the flies are getting to your dog, they make a cream for that to put on them where the flies are mainly biting them. They are also EXTREMELY attracted to the poop. You won't get rid of them until you clean it up very often and they have no reason to come back.
