Dog crating problem- Does fine while we're home, panic's when we leave!?

David P

Alright guys, I have a 7 year old terrier/beagle mut and originally he was my dog until I joined the military. I left him with my mom. Ever sense we've had him he's always had seperation anxiety. Eventually my sister bought a puggle (pug/beagle mix) and that inadvertently fixed it. He was fine staying at home. Well she moved about 6 months ago and for the first 4 months he was fine being left alone.

Then me and my fiance moved out of my mom's apartment. We were just living there temporarily. He ate a hole in her drywall. So I took him to our apartment because my mom got really upset. I started reading information about separation anxiety, crate training, and being the alpha dog. I read that the majority of sep anxiety comes from the dog feeling like its his job to protect you and when you leave it confuses him and he takes it out on things, sometimes himself.

So for several weeks I did -everything- suggested to show them your the alpha dog. He was reacting well to this, becoming submissive, I was able to get him to eat his food in his crate when before he wouldn't get near it. Eventually he even slept in his crate during the day and we were home. However, once we'd put him in the crate and leave he'd panic. Either destroying things left in the crate (Like a towel for him to lay on) or he'd lick the bars on the crate until his nose was bleeding and raw.

I really don't think its an alpha dog issue, he isn't showing any traits of feeling like he is the leader and I've been very successful (and so has my fiance) and reinforcing it daily. We do the pack walks, I make him always sit and shake before receiving petting, and I always lead him. At food time he eats after we do and after I walk him. When we feed him we make him sit and stay until we tell him he can go eat.

Any other ideas?
Just some additional information. I do leave things in his crate to do he just won't do anything with them while we leave. He just panic's the whole time. Before we leave he starts panting heavily like he's just getting all worked up.
I don't leave him in the crate day and night lol. He lays in his crate during the day, thats where he chooses to lay down. He isnt locked in there, and at night he sleeps in the living room in his dog bed because he crys if we try to put him in the crate at night. The only time I PUT him in his crate is when we leave and lately I've been forced to leave him in my bedroom because he seems to do good in there alone.

Answer
Hiya i had this problem with my boxer as a pup it sounds like seperation anxiety - it is fairly common (more in younger dogs) but they get worked up and anxious without their owner. I found that using DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) plug in resolved the issue very quickly. It is like an air fresherner plug in but releases a pheromone that relaxes dogs (a similar 1 that a mum releases to their young) this calms the dog of any age. You cant smell anything. Is also useful for times such as bonfire night or new yr if fireworks scare your dog!! It may be worth a try i was not convinced and i tried it within a week my dog didnt stress or howl when i left her.
http://www.doggiesolutions.co.uk/d-a-p-dog-appeasing-pheromone-497-0.html
A couple of other things you could try is
1 - leaving her for a couple of minutes (working up to longer) in another room while you are in
2 - Dont stroke or pet your dog before you leave total ignorance 10 mins before you go out as fussing will increase the anxiety before you actually leave and your dog will think there is something to be scared about
3 - give a nice juicy bone (suitable for dogs obviously) to chew on gives them something else to focus on.
4 - The most important thing when shes calm and doesnt pine reward with lots of fuss and treats
It doesnt sound like a dominance issue you sound as if you have a very well behaved and socialised dog.
You could maybe consider if your circumstances let you getting a play mate that would almost definately solve the issue
Hope you sort it.

Taking two dogs to the UK, what is the quarentine process like. Is it worth it or better to rehome or...?

NoDayButTo

Taking two dogs to the UK, what is the quarentine process like. Is it worth it or better to rehome or find a temp home for the dogs.

I have heard some bad things about the quarentine process. And a friend had told us that has been through it that the dogs would be first having no interaction for atleast the first 3 days. So to put enough food in their cage for 3 days and plenty of water. Then to tape a bag of food to their crate for when they eventually get around to feeding them. She said a lot of dogs are lucky to make it out. Some die just from being there that long, many get lost and misplaced, some get sick and die or are euthanized.

So my question is how long is the quarentine process? Is it really that bad? Is it really worth putting the dogs through?

My husbands co worker is going to London to oversee a major project at their London office and he will be there anywhere from 6 to 9 months.
He has 2 dogs one is a Jack Russell Terrier and the other is an American Staffordshire Terrier.

Now I know the UK has an issue with pit bulls, is the Amstaff consider a "Pit Bull" over there or just the APBT?

Is it worth it to even try to take them or should he rehome them or try to find them a temporary home for the months he is gone? He doesn't want to part with his dogs but he worries about the effects of taking them with him.

Thanks

Answer
Hello
First of all, YES, the Am.Staff is considered a pitbull over here, however, you are able to obtain a special licence through DEFRA when coming into the country under this situation. It may require the dog to be neutered and muzzled in public, but will try and find a link for you to the correct DEFRA page.

Quarantine is a DEFINITELY 6 months, which is a long time considering he will only be here 6 to 9 months. I have to wonder if it is worth this at all.

However I can thoroughly vouch for the Ladyhaye Kennels in Blindley Heath. It is where we keep our rescues and I know all the staff and how they are with the quarantine dogs.

It is in an area not too far from London by car and your friend would be able to visit at any time. I was there this morning walking our dogs. It is close to Gatwick airport.

Add on - here is the link regarding the USA. If the dogs have their qualifying paperwork then they would not need quarantine.

Add again. I cannot find the piece I have read before regarding a license for the dog, although I did come across words used to describe the pit bull - and American Staff was in there.

Dog breaks out of crate?

To me, hor

Okay. Ive gotten the papers I need for my dogs and the papers from the shelter for the cats declawing, and the dog that has its ears cropped (done so by the breeder) I bought as adult. The 6 month PET home quarantine has begun, in-case the house sells we don't want to have to put a 6 month stipulation on it. I have started putting my old staff/lab mix into crate training. She was my first dog and i made the mistake of NOT crate training her. And now I am having major problems crate training her. She does have separation anxiety, but its normally just walking and pacing a whining around the house when im not home. She is 13 years old. I bought brand new plastic travel crates as at home I use the wire ones. The first time I put her in a wire crate, and left, she DEMOLISHED it. And was loose in the 30 mins it took me to run to town. So I opened her brand new plastic crate, and the next day i had to run to town it was 20 mins. She had ripped the little holes along the sides into bigger holes, and bent the crap out of the door enough she got it off. She is fine in the crate for hours when I am home. Or even outside in the yard. However when she hears the truck pull out of the drive. She goes bonkers. Help please?! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkTg._pyPZnX7Z4GJjefF6zsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20120122003143AAphsZt

Answer
Well done for getting all of that horrendous paperwork out of the way. I would not put a 13-year-old dog in an airline crate for 12 hours without sedation (6 hours flying from mainland Canada to UK, plus handling time both ends). However, I don't know whether sedation is OK for a dog that age. You need to speak to a vet who specializes in travel medicine. Contact your shipping airline for further advice.

Re the crate, try muzzling her until she gets used to it. Or give her plenty of chew toys to keep her busy.

Chihuahua Dog Questions?

Hi.xDD

What is a nylabone used for? Sorry I'm new with dogs, *lol.
Should I get it a nylabone or a bone kong, or both?
& Should I buy it just ONE pack of training pads, after I'm not going to use it again.
I just need it for the day when I'm not home.
And what kind of toys should I get it...
Thank you in advance. :)
OKAY. I'll do my freaking research next time. :\
Okay, I think I'll just buy one pack of training pads.
& to eggopepper or w.e. my mom is staying home with it.

Answer
What is a nylabone used for?
A nylabone is used for satisfying your dogs chewing. Once your dog starts to teeth, it will want to chew and chew and chew. My dog is currently teething, and she likes to gnaw on the furniture. So I got her a nylabone. Her nylabone is chicken flavoured, but they have different flavouring. They have flavoured and none flavoured, but most dogs tend to go for the flavoured. Another solution is buying Bitter Apple Spray. I was recommended this, and it really works! In some Pet Stores you can find this in the Cat Section. It does not harm your dog, they just don't like the Bitter taste. So spray some on whatever you don't want your dog to chew on. When I was getting my Bitter Apple Spray, I also saw a Gel kind, it was Bitter Lime. Either one works i'm sure, but i've only had experienced with the Bitter Apple Spray.
Should I get it a nylabone or a bone kong, or both?
I recommend both. Your dog probably wouldn't get satisfied with just one toy. There are also different kinds of kongs. There are different sizes, and different ones used for different things. There are the regular ball shaped kinds, teething kongs, bone kongs, etceterra. Small, medium, big. There are also different colours, i've seen blue, red, and pink. You could stuff the kong with your dog's favourite treat! :) I use a little bit of peanutbutter.
The nylabones also come in different kinds. Different flavours. I've seen bacon and chicken, and i've seen ones that arent flavoured. Different shapes. I've seen one shaped like a drumstick, (or something :P) and I've seen one shaped like a bone. From what I understand there is also edible and not edible. There is also different sizes for different dogs. And different kinds for every kind of chewer (such as powerful chewers and average chewers.) All of the nylabones control tartar and are veterinarian recommended.
Kongs are also veterinarian recommended.
Should I buy it just ONE pack of training pads, after I'm not going to use it again.
Well, you already said you were just going to take the dog out and get a sweater and booties. ;)
So i'll just skip this question.. LMAO
And what kind of toys should I get it...
Take a look at the Pet Store and buy a variety, especially if your going to crate him. Some squeaky toys, soft toys, stuffed animals (my dog LOVES webkinz, LOL), chew toys (the kongs and nylabones), etceterra. :P Don't give your dog rawhides though, they aren't good for dogs.

Nutri-Vet Pet Ease gel for dogs?

megan b

Has anyone ever tried the Nutri-Vet Pet Ease gel for dogs? Have you noticed any change in your dog's behavior? Thanks.

Answer
Actually i have never used this product but i have used similar that i purchased from my vet practice and you can buy in pet stores

DAP

Promote the feeling of safety and reassurance for your dog
This is a new product to the market place. In mammals, all lactating females release a substance which science calls an "appeasing" pheromone. The function of this pheromone is to provide a feeling of comfort, safety and reassurance to the young. A dogs "appeasing" pheromones are secreted by the bitch 3 to 5 days after the puppies birth.

The environment we live in today is full of noises and smells that can be disturbing to some dogs who share our homes. It is now appreciated that anxiety is a real and debilitating condition for our dogs as well as for us. One of the most fascinating and ground-breaking developments to materialise against the stress and phobias experienced by our dogs is the identification and use of pheromone therapy.

Stressed and anxious dogs

A team of French scientists has managed to produce a synthetic version of this dog appeasement pheromone and this has now been launched in the UK as the Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) Diffuser. Tests and trials have been going on for the last two years to assess the products value in the treatment of stressed and anxious dogs, and these have shown that by releasing this familiar signal to the dog, the DAP Diffuser can be very effective in many areas of dog behaviour therapy by making it feel less anxious, calmer and safer. These include destructiveness, vocalisation and house soiling brought on by stress, nervousness or anxiousness.

The DAP Diffuser
The DAP Diffuser works like a plug in air freshener, continuously releasing the odourless natural pheromone into the dogs environment, helping to make it feel safe and calm. The DAP Diffuser is a natural solution, there is no sedative effect and the dogs ability to interact and play is maintained.

A lot of people have dogs who are frightened of fireworks, and it is very distressing for owners to see their beloved friends cowering or shivering in a corner during this season, which seems to get longer each year. The only solution for many is sedatives. This is only a short term solution and is not good long term for the dog.

The DAP Natural Spray

The Natural Spray has exactly the same effect on your dog as the DAP Diffuser, but does not require a mains electricity supply. Ideal for using in the car, can help with travel stress and car sickness.

Simply spray 8 to 10 pumps of D.A.P. 15 minutes prior to expected effects and before your dog is introduced into the environment (car, carrier, Kennel etc...). Effects should last approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours, although each animal will respond differently. Renew application after this time if you notice a reduced effect.
D.A.P. Spray can be sprayed directly on bedding, inside crates, indoor kennels, or in the car. D.A.P. Spray should not be directly sprayed on animals or near an animals face.

Sounds CD

To go with the DAP Diffuser, there is a CD with sounds of fireworks on it. You play the sounds to your pet over a protracted period of time, starting at a very low volume and increasing gradually. This helps to accustom your dog to the sounds it does not like.

When the CD is used in conjunction with the DAP Diffuser it provides an effective, safe and natural way to calm your dogs fears and anxieties without resorting to potentially harmful sedatives and medication.

Where can I get a trendy, cute dog carrier?

bens60r

I have a seven lb. male yorkie. I have a plastic crate/carrier that he uses. I really want a stylish one in turquoise and brown or all turquoise. When I yahoo search, all I get are soft carriers, or crate covers. I was wondering if anyone knew of any where selling cute crates (the kind with a handle and holes in the side, door on front)
Or can I paint the one I have??

Answer
There isnt really a fully turqoise pet crate but I did find this plastic one, thats brown but the doors and windows can come in a variety of colors including turquoise. Heres the link:

http://www.varietystores.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=62

But if you do not like that one, I have just found special non-toxic paint that is safe to use on pet furnitures, at home so basically anywhere your pet can go. Heres the link for that:

http://www.mythicpaint.com/

All the safety information about non toxic paints can also be found on the internet though the link above gives some information too.

Hope this helped!

What makes a better pet, rabbit or ferret?

Kamryn's M

I'm trying to decide whats right for me. I love how lop-ear rabbits are and how cute they are, but since I can remember I wanted a ferret. I love how energetic and playful they are. Please HELP?

Answer
Both rabbits and ferrets live to about the same age so it is really up to you to make up your own mind.

I hand the following out to anyone who buys any of my ferrets. I live in the UK, I exhibit, judge and breed ferrets, also ferret cross European polecat hybrids, I got my first pet ferret and pet rabbit over 50 years ago, when I was a child.

Behaviour of all ferrets Ferrets can sleep up to 20 hours a day and must have a playtime of at least 2-3 hours a day. They can be extremely active during play, dashing up and down stairs and around your home like a mad things, play fights and mock battles are all part of their play.

Feeding Ferrets
Ferrets are carnivores and therefor they should be fed on a raw meat diet, correctly fed ferrets should never need hairball prevention (Ferret Lax).
My ferrets get whole poultry, pigeons, pheasants and waterfowl all with feathers and on the bone also whole rabbits in the fur on the bone. Bovine liver in small amounts, sheep and pigs heart lungs wind pipe and spleen of which is all minced together then fed to the ferrets, they also get diced poultry turkey and pork also beef / pork and turkey mince, the mince can also contain some fish without the bones.
As a treat my ferret like a small amounts of apple and some of them like melon skins

Housing
Almost any type of cage can be used for ferrets, from rabbit hutches, poultry arks and dog crates to home made hutches. For their own safety all ferrets should be put in some sort of cage while the owners are not at home.

Bedding / Care
I use shredded paper, as I find that changed weekly it cuts down on the ferrets normal body odder. Ferrets should never need a bath and if the owner thinks their ferret needs a bath I surgest that they find another type of pet. Once you have bather your ferret the ouder will come back and it will be twice the strenght it was before you bathed it.

Exercise
Ferrets like to have a playtime of at least 2-3 hours a day, although mine can be found to be awake when ever anyone is around. Mine also love to go for walks with me and my dogs around the village.

Health
Some people say that one reason they have hobs castrated is to stop the sexual frustration of the adolescence ferrets.
Then others say about the smell of the ferrets as another reason for having hobs castrated As for the smell of these young ferrets it is a great smell and anyone who thinks differently should think about weather they should have ferrets or maybe they would be better off looking after some inanimate object such as a stone, hence so sexual frustration or smell.
Question;
Would you castrate the male family members because of B.O. or their feet smell? So why do it to ferrets!
Correctly fed ferrets should never need hairball prevention (Ferret Lax). Trimming Nails Sit down and lay your rabbit on its back that way you can get to all 4 feet put your thumb on the sole of the foot with your fingers around the back of the foot and press your thumb down to show the nails take 1/3 rd of the nail off
Healthy ferrets can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Spaying and neutering is not a good thing for ferrets as this leads to Adrenal cancer
Ferrets can catch human flu.
Sneezing and coughing, Runny nose and eyes (discharge should be clear), Fever over 104° F, Lethargy, Wheezing, Diarrhea, Loss of appetite.

Breeding / Sexing
With the male the penis is where the bellybutton usually is and with the female both anus and vagina are just under her tail

Ferret History
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferret - Originally, in 1758 the domestic ferret was classified as a separate genus and was called Mustela Furo. It was believed the steppe polecat to be the closest to the domestic ferret. Then, in 1970, through the examination of external chromosome shape, it was determined that the European polecat (Mustela putorius) was closer to the domestic ferret than the steppe polecat. When this evidence came to light it was decided M. putorius and the domestic ferret were in the same species and the domestic ferret was then renamed Mustela Putorius Furo to distinguish it from the polecat. However, dogs are considered Canis familiars, not Canis lupus familiars which should follow if they are domesticated wolf, Canis lupis. The 1828 Webster's Dictionary defines: FER'RET, n. 1. An animal of the genus Mustela, or Weasel kind, about 14 inches in length, of a pale yellow colour with red eyes.

In 1999 a group of British scientists examined DNA structure and could not make any further determination. So at this point in time we simply do NOT know, with certainty, the ancestor of the domestic ferret. The theories given here are the best possible with the available information. If new evidence is introduced, adjustments may be made. Right now, our best guess is that the domesticated ferret is a descendant of the European polecat.
Here in the UK adults can weigh from 1lb to 7lbs, and can vary according to the time of year up to as much as 50% plus or minus.

Ferrets were imported to the USA in the late 18th century. In the mid 19th century ferrets (then known as fitch) were bred for their fur and even as late as the 1980's fitch fur farming was widespread. Only recently has this practice fallen out of favour with most countries.

Ferrets as pets in the USA
In the United States, ferrets were relatively rare pets until the 1980s. Dr. Wendy Winstead, a veterinarian and former folk singer who had her first ferret in 1969, sold ferrets to a number of celebrities including Dick Smothers and David Carradine while making television appearances on programs such as the David Letterman Show with ferrets in the 1980s[13], writing books and promoting them until her death in the 1990s from cancer. A government study by the California State Bird and Mammal Conservation Program found that by 1996, approximately 800,000 or so domestic ferrets were likely being kept as pets in the United States.

Ferreting
Rabbiting For hundreds of years, the main use of ferrets was for hunting, or ferreting. With their long, lean build and curious nature, ferrets are very well equipped for getting down holes and chasing rodents and rabbits out of their burrows. Caesar Agustus sent ferrets (named "viverrae" by Plinius ) to the Balearic Islands to control the rabbit plagues in 6 BC. They are still used for hunting in some countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, where rabbits are considered a plauge species. However, the practice is illegal in several countries where it is feared that ferreting could unbalance the ecology.
In England, in 1390, a law was enacted restricting the use of ferrets for hunting to those of substantial means: "...it is ordained that no manner of layman which hath not lands to the value of forty shillings a year (the equivalent of about £1,000 in today's money) shall from henceforth keep any greyhound or other dog to hunt, nor shall he use ferrets, nets, heys, harepipes nor cords, nor other engines for to take or destroy deer, hares, nor conies, nor other gentlemen's game, under pain of twelve months' imprisonment." Ferrets were first introduced into the New World in the 17th century, and were used extensively from 1860 until the start of World War 2 to protect grain stores in the American West..

Showing
The Hobby of Breeding & Showing Ferrets is called 'The Fancy'. Almost every weekend, all over the country, ferret shows are taking place. Many are Local Ferret Clubs holding their single-day shows in places such as Village Halls and Scout Huts, others are two-day Championship Shows held in Sports Centres and School Halls.

My Experience
Since having a brain injury I had to cut down on pets from over the 200 that I owned, I have only kept a few Ferrets and European hybrids, Rabbits, Dogs and Rosella Parakeets.
After keeping young ferret hobs form the early 70 'before that I only ever kept jills', I have found that once the young hobs reach adolescence they will try to bully the rest of the group and they soon find out that the older hobs will not stand for their bullying ways. Ferret hobs can be brats when they come into their first season, but after that they just become friends. Being a ferret owner for 50+ years, with 12 ferrets at the moment and my oldest ferrets have lived to 13+ the following group is not just about ferrets, we have members who own all sorts of pets,. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/intact-ferrets/
ALWAYS seek veterinary advice if your pet seems unwell in any way, and research new information as thoroughly as possible then take it to your vet for their opinion before acting on it.
