Bring this collar so everyone will know he's yours. Bring this leash to keep him safe by your side. Bring these treats to make him happy. Put this crate in your room so he can sleep next to your side." etc. That way the new dog/puppy doesn't have to deal with the stress inherent in Christmas day and your nephew can pick out exactly which dog he wants. The instructions can also be modified to say that the puppy will be delivered on a certain date.

A Christmas day delivery will be stressful for everyone.

Please please please let the pup stay with it's mother and siblings, ideally until 13 weeks, do not bring the pup home sooner than 8 weeks. Puppies miss out on important life lessons, like bite inhibition, from their siblings and mother.

You do not want the pup to sleep in your bed, borrow a very small crate from someone, put some old towels in there. The crate should be in your room, next to your bed. The learning to be in a crate, will be a big help in housebreaking.

When you know your bringing your pup home, the first thing you need to do is take the pup to your vet. This should be within a couple of days of having the pup, just to make sure he's healthy. Many states have a Puppy Lemon Law, to protect people from being sold sick puppies. When you take your pup to the vet for this "wellness" vet visit, she will discuss with you the vaccination schedule. Do discuss with her that some Miniature Dachshunds have a reaction to vaccines. You should ask the breeder if any of the dogs she breed has had a vaccine reaction.

Try to get the pup into a routine. You need to feed it 3 small meals a day. Do not feed to much or the pup will get diareahh. You will have to get up in the middle of the night to potty the puppy. If the pup has trouble getting back to sleep, cover the crate with a towel.

Remember, that little puppies are pooping and peeing machines. It amazes me how much water can come out of that little body. So just be prepared.

All dogs have their own personalitites. I own Standard Wirehair Dachshunds. Dachshunds were bred as hunting dogs, so they have a lot of energy. They will gladly kill squirrels, mice, rats and anything else they can get their teeth on. They can be stubborn and indepenent thinkers, they can also be over-protective of their people, home, food, toys, etc. Do not tolerate bad behavior, it will only escalate. You need to be a fair but firm owner.

As for the back. Hopefully, the breeder your getting your pup from is responsible and had not had any dogs go down and if she did, bred away from the problem as best she could. However, this can happen in well-bred dogs and poorly bred dogs, the problem is poly genetic. They do not break their backs, IVDD has to do with the spinal Disc. It is very important that you do not allow your dachshund to get fat and out of shape. Your dachshund should be fit and firm. Lots of exercise, hiking, swiming,

I have a 4 yo male Standard Wire. He's very serious and a real mommy's boy. He will do anything I ask him, he's very smart, has been very easy to train, he's very agile and there's nothing he can't do. He is stand-offish with strangers. He does agility, obedience, field, breed and does actual hunting, all successfully. He well play fetch until his feet fall off or until a squirrel crosses his path.

I also have a 5 month old female Standard Wire, is a love bug and a real social butterfly. She loves the world. She's very smart, I housebroke her quite easily, but she has more of an independent streak than my male. She's not so interested in fetch, but likes to play tug with fuzzy furry toys. Today, she discovered the squirrels go up trees.

Whether or not a dachshund or any breed or mix become mean, depends not only on the breeding, but also on you. It's important that you socialize socialize socialize your pup with lots of people and really nice stable dogs. When your pup is old enough, find a good Puppy obedience class and enroll. The instructors will teach you to train your puppy some very basic but important commands, games to play and can give housebreaking advice and can help with any other problems you may be having.

UPS driver Pepper sprayed my dog INSIDE THE HOUSE - what should I do?

I am reaching out to see what I can do. Our UPS driver came in our home while we were gone without permission. He left packages inside on our steps to the kitchen about. 6pm according to tracking. We got home later than we expected to. @9:15pm. And when we came in thought was weird the packages were inside ...but once we got to kitchen found our yellow lab. Having severe difficulty breathing and his eyes were watering,squinting, and bloodshot!! We took him outside to get fresh air and try to calm him down and start to catch his breath...then wiped his face for almost an hour will cold cloths trying to get whatever was on him off. He was crying and moaning once he could breath. We think he was pepper sprayed IN our house

I called the on call vet which told us to do what we were doing and watch him thru the night and the next few days. Tis happened on fri night......he was super clingy and couldn't keep eyes open...lethargic... But seemed to b breathing ok. Monday morning I noticed he was bumping into things...when I looked at his eyes they were completely white like an old dog......rushed him to the vet....he ran a bunch of tests..said he was blind. Sent me to a specialist 3hrs away......his eyesight is getting better with numerous medications and eye drops...not allowed in sun or cold.....will have to keep up treatment for a few more weeks before we can tell the permanent damage. He is only 5 and He is also a service dog. And now there is a serious question if he will b able to continue this once he is better. ESP around men. The sheriff is involved and ups supervisor initially offered to pay get bills but now can't get N answer from anyone.

We would like to know our rights....it infuriates us that he was in his home. And this happened to him....plus the fact that the driver did not let someone know what he had done so the dog could receive medical attention.....the dog was by himself for a few hours not knowing what had happend and thank goodness didn't stop breathing or fall down the stairs.

Of course the driver is denying that he did anything....and has lied about what happened. Said he rang our doorbell...we dont have one....that he never heard or saw a dog....we have 2 labs. One was in her crate and the other was the one he had the run in with. Said he left the pckgs at front door...were at the back.....and that he was just putting them out of the weather..but he didn't put my neighbors inside" who lives right next door..

Any insight or suggestions you can give us would greatly be appreciated!

Off-hand, I see several problems with your story.

First, if no one was home, how did anyone gain access to your kitchen to leave a package? Why wasn't the door locked? Generally speaking, any delivery person will try to find the closest, covered spot to leave a package. The faster they can leave the package, the faster they can move to the next stop, and be done with their route.

Second, are you SURE your dog was pepper-sprayed? Is there any chance he may have come into contact with a chemical or other substance in the house? If you have two dogs, and they were both in the house, was there any harm to the other one? As dogs are pack animals, and respond to signs of distress from a member of the pack, it would be expected that the second dog would have come to aid the first dog and would have been sprayed as well.

Third, did any (human) notice signs of pepper spray when they arrived home? I had a container of pepper spray that accidentally leaked on my gloves one time. I threw the pepper spray out, left my gloves in the car, and a friend and I who were going out to dinner were coughing and our eyes were watering. It wasn't as bad, but we still had symptoms when we returned to the car after dinner. If pepper spray was discharged in the house, humans would have likely noticed.

Fourth, even if the dog was pepper-sprayed, how can you be sure that it was the UPS driver who did it? If it was that easy to gain access to your home, it could have just as easily been neighborhood kids who were causing trouble.

Fifth, if the driver was performing his job within the limits of the company's policy, and reasonably feared for his safety from the dog, that may be a sufficient defense.

Your best avenue would likely be to continue your complaint with UPS. Alternatively, you could consult with an attorney, but the most you would likely be able to recover is the cost of the vet bills, and possibly any lost income you would have received from the dog as a service animal. Still, in order to recover anything, you (as the plaintiff) would have the burden of proving that there was negligence on the part of UPS and/or the driver, and that the negligence was the proximate cause of the injury to the dog.

Do you know what it entails and how much it costs when a litter goes wrong?

For example, when the b1tch needs a c-section. What do you have to do and how much does it cost? Do you know what you would have to do if she died? Are you willing to loose your dog like this?

How about if the litter is early? Bottle feeding or inserting a feeding tube? How about the several vet visits to examine the puppies to determine if their hearts and lungs are developing properly?

What happens when you havev done everything you can and the puppy (or puppies) die anyway? How about if you have puppies that no one wants because they are sickly? What if a puppy doesn't fit in its new home, are you able to take it back?

Are you willing to accept that your puppies may end up in a pound and be put down? Do you understand the costs involve in avoiding this? Are you willing to pay them?

Over the years Ive had very good luck, much better than many I know but here are a few examples of some of the costs.

Even breeding a healthy litter and having a normal uneventful delivery can can a few thousand dollars if you do it right. A litter I bred back in '93 using fresh chilled semen cost me over $3,000 by the time I finished paying for the semen, shipping, tests to determine the right time for the breeding, etc. The end result was a litter of 8 pups (7m, 1f) and one the only female passed away when she was less than 24 hrs old. Very disappointing given I had bred the litter planning on keeping a female for myself. On the other hand it was a very nice litter 4 of the pups finished their Championships.

Try three I give in and say okay I'll ship her, run all the timing tests, get her health certificates, drive her to the airport and receive a phone call almost 5 hours later from the airline saying that they failed to put her on the plane!!! Since the sires owner is leaving for shows the next morning so much for that season. Fourth try....well that didn't happened because the male had been sold and shipped to a new owner in a different country on the other side of the planet. Net result I spent about $1,500 wasted over 2 1/2 yrs and no puppies.

With a litter I had three years ago mom had to have a c-section and we were only able to save 3 puppies. Because of the c-section mom wasn't interested in the pups for about 3 days so that meant feeding puppies every 2 hours and basically no sleep for 3 days. After the first day I was down to only 2 pups having lost the smallest of the three.

Over the years I've had very few pups returned primarily because I'm very fussing abotu placements. However a few years ago I had one puppy buyer call and want to return his almost 5 yr old dog who he'd had since she was 9 wks old because his new girlfriend didn't like her. He didn't want to go to the effort of taking her to the airport, fortunantly I had a friend within a couple of hours who picked her up and shipped her back to me. However shipping and the crate alone were over $500. A few months later after he broke up with the girlfriend he actually wanted her back, needless to say I told him No!

how would i pay this person?? and if i did how would i know after paying that they would fufill the end of the bargain? like how would i know i wouldnt pay 110 and then receive no dog??

Daschund baby puppy infromation?

Hey there! So, I'm buying myself a smooth coated miniature daschund in the next month or so. Can you pleas tell me more information about them? If you could also tell me about what to do on the first night with the puppy, cause i hear they cry a lot the first few nights? Anyways, explain their personalities, how they act like. How do they mostly like, you know, what do they do on a daily basis? Are they funny, mean, anything. Just swarm me with information of anykind of the miniature daschund breed. Thanks ;)

Please please please let the pup stay with it's mother and siblings, ideally until 13 weeks, do not bring the pup home sooner than 8 weeks. Puppies miss out on important life lessons, like bite inhibition, from their siblings and mother.

To learn more about the dachshund, visit the Dachshund Club of America website http://www.dachshund-dca.org. Also, do pick up the book Dachshunds for Dummies, it is quite good, despite it's title.

You do not want the pup to sleep in your bed, borrow a very small crate from someone, put some old towels in there. The crate should be in your room, next to your bed. The learning to be in a crate, will be a big help in housebreaking.

When you know your bringing your pup home, the first thing you need to do is take the pup to your vet. This should be within a couple of days of having the pup, just to make sure he's healthy. Many states have a Puppy Lemon Law, to protect people from being sold sick puppies. When you take your pup to the vet for this "wellness" vet visit, she will discuss with you the vaccination schedule. Do discuss with her that some Miniature Dachshunds have a reaction to vaccines. You should ask the breeder if any of the dogs she breed has had a vaccine reaction.

Try to get the pup into a routine. You need to feed it 3 small meals a day. Do not feed to much or the pup will get diareahh. You will have to get up in the middle of the night to potty the puppy. If the pup has trouble getting back to sleep, cover the crate with a towel.

Remember, that little puppies are pooping and peeing machines. It amazes me how much water can come out of that little body. So just be prepared.

All dogs have their own personalitites. I own Standard Wirehair Dachshunds. Dachshunds were bred as hunting dogs, so they have a lot of energy. They will gladly kill squirrels, mice, rats and anything else they can get their teeth on. They can be stubborn and indepenent thinkers, they can also be over-protective of their people, home, food, toys, etc. Do not tolerate bad behavior, it will only escalate. You need to be a fair but firm owner.

As for the back. Hopefully, the breeder your getting your pup from is responsible and had not had any dogs go down and if she did, bred away from the problem as best she could. However, this can happen in well-bred dogs and poorly bred dogs, the problem is poly genetic. They do not break their backs, IVDD has to do with the spinal Disc. It is very important that you do not allow your dachshund to get fat and out of shape. Your dachshund should be fit and firm. Lots of exercise, hiking, swiming,

So far, I've had 3 dachshunds, all very different in personality. My first Standard Wire female, was very sweet (she was a rescue) but not hte brightest lightbulb in the box, however, she could unsnap, unzip, unbutton anything if there was hope of getting a piece of food. She once dragged a delivery of a 20 pound box of dog food at least 15 feet, ate through the cardboard box, then ate thru the bag until she got to the kibble. She lived to be 17, passed last year.

I have a 4 yo male Standard Wire. He's very serious and a real mommy's boy. He will do anything I ask him, he's very smart, has been very easy to train, he's very agile and there's nothing he can't do. He is stand-offish with strangers. He does agility, obedience, field, breed and does actual hunting, all successfully. He well play fetch until his feet fall off or until a squirrel crosses his path.

I also have a 5 month old female Standard Wire, is a love bug and a real social butterfly. She loves the world. She's very smart, I housebroke her quite easily, but she has more of an independent streak than my male. She's not so interested in fetch, but likes to play tug with fuzzy furry toys. Today, she discovered the squirrels go up trees.

Whether or not a dachshund or any breed or mix become mean, depends not only on the breeding, but also on you. It's important that you socialize socialize socialize your pup with lots of people and really nice stable dogs. When your pup is old enough, find a good Puppy obedience class and enroll. The instructors will teach you to train your puppy some very basic but important commands, games to play and can give housebreaking advice and can help with any other problems you may be having.

For example, when the b1tch needs a c-section. What do you have to do and how much does it cost? Do you know what you would have to do if she died? Are you willing to loose your dog like this?

How about if the litter is early? Bottle feeding or inserting a feeding tube? How about the several vet visits to examine the puppies to determine if their hearts and lungs are developing properly?

What happens when you havev done everything you can and the puppy (or puppies) die anyway? How about if you have puppies that no one wants because they are sickly? What if a puppy doesn't fit in its new home, are you able to take it back?

Are you willing to accept that your puppies may end up in a pound and be put down? Do you understand the costs involve in avoiding this? Are you willing to pay them?

Do you REALLY understand the costs and are you willing to accept them?

Unfortunately most folks have no idea of the potential risks and costs (both $$ and emotional risks).

Over the years Ive had very good luck, much better than many I know but here are a few examples of some of the costs.

Even breeding a healthy litter and having a normal uneventful delivery can can a few thousand dollars if you do it right. A litter I bred back in '93 using fresh chilled semen cost me over $3,000 by the time I finished paying for the semen, shipping, tests to determine the right time for the breeding, etc. The end result was a litter of 8 pups (7m, 1f) and one the only female passed away when she was less than 24 hrs old. Very disappointing given I had bred the litter planning on keeping a female for myself. On the other hand it was a very nice litter 4 of the pups finished their Championships.
