I buy one 40lb bag of dog food thats 16% protein (20% during hunting season when hes working hard) for $20 at the feed store once every 6 months.
I bought electric clippers and cut my dogs hair when I feel like it and they paid for themself on the first use ($40).
I bought 3 in 1 dog vaccines Kennel Cough (Bordetella), and Leptospirosis and Rabies and administer them myself for $60 and thats the entire series of shots (you dont need to keep giving shots after one year old).
Lastly a flea bath once a month or so in the summer (not needed when indoors in the winter usually) for maybe $20 for the whole year.

Thats a repeat expense of $100 per year, and an upfront cost of $100. Of course to train your dog your going to want a kennel, or house, for him. You can make one yourself for $50-$100, and your going to want water and food dishes so maybe another $10 there. If your not satisfied with a rope leash (free) then your going to have to buy a collar and leash for say $30.

As far as the classes go, they arent worth it. Many places have free dog training seminars, and if you really want to learn how to get your dog to behave then get a book and read up on it. For the first year of your dog's life I wouldn't even worry about training, your dog should be happy and care free for its first year and you need to spend time developing a relationship with it. That way you can effectively discipline it later on. Simple things like "No" and "Potty" are fine, but don't discipline for wrong behaviour until its old enough to understand.

All told I can't possibly see any sane person with a non-show dog spending more than $100-200 a year on it. Buy from a feed store not a "pet store" and get a healthy dog from good breeders and you will not have to worry about sickness. Any decent breeder should guarantee the dog for life.

how much does a dog usually cost to take care of monthly?

Answer
There isn't going to be a set price.
There are too many variables. The size and breed of the dog for one as well as where you live. The prices in Ohio are about double what I paid in Texas for vet care.

For example the size of the dog can significantly impact the food price. A 50 pound bag at $25 will last a 10 pound dog alot longer than a 100 pound dog. You may need 2-3 bags a month.

There is also flea protection, heartworm protection.. which are also based on weight. Shots are going to cost alot in the beginning for puppy series, however an older dog may only need boosters.
Depending on the breed, there may be grooming needs. That can run quite a bit. Make sure to look at the needs of the breed you are thinking about.

And don't forget about any emergencies that come up. I have a dog that was diagnosed with epilepsy this month. The ER visit cost me $330. The meds will run $30 a month, plus bloodwork every 6 months at $100.
Also, add in your initial costs. A crate, dishes, dog pen or chain, leashes..etc.

Good luck!
