What do I need to get?

Sarah

I am going to be getting a dog in July. I am going to be adopting from a shelter not buying a dog. I would like to know what I need to have when I bring the dog home so that I can be fully prepared. My boyfriend and I are both full time students getting master's degrees so the dog will be in a crate during the day when we are in school. I would like some opinions on supplies that I need to have before getting the dog.
Thanks!

Hi! Congrats on getting a dog! You are doing a great thing by adopting a pet, and not encouraging breeding!

Things to get:
Food and Water bowls: I suggest metal, or ceramic, plastic often holds in bacteria and mold, even in water changed daily.

Get have the dog's food and treats upon bringing the dog home. Treats will help encourage an anxious dog. I'm extremely opinionated on food, and believe that any food you buy in a supermarket is crap and will literally be crapped out of your dog, leaving it malnutritioned. When looking for a food, be sure it is free of corn, corn meal, and by products. The food should list the type of protein and fat, not a generic "animal fat" but instead say "chicken fat" for example. The first 5 ingredients should be protein and fats, avoiding fillers and grains as much as possible. Some good brands of dog food include : Solid Gold, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, and Canidae. They are expensive, but worth it, your dog will eat less, and poop less and be healthier. I suggest researching, most dog foods have their own websites! You can find these foods in feed supply stores, or pet specialty stores like petco and petsmart. * keep in mind treats are rewards, so nutrition in them is not a high priority for most manufacturers, just be ware of calorie content, and waste products. A variety of treats can be nice, my dog loves peanut butter and cheese flavored ones.

Have the leash available for the dog, and some toys. Chew toys, squeaky toys, rope toys, ball toys.

* I left out a collar on purpose. I believe taking your dog to the store to try on a collor is a good thing. Be sure if it has decorative decals that on the back of the collar, the part rubbing on the dog's neck, there is nothing that will irritate it's skin, like metal snaps etc. Leather is a great way to go. While you're at the store, you may want to get an ID tag made too. Include the dog's name and at least two phone numbers. Phone numbers are more important than even your address, as you may not be home when the dog has been lost.

Grooming supplies are up to you. You may want a hypoallergenic dog shampoo, depending on the breed, conditioner is not always necessary. Nail trimmers are important too. Dogs need nails trimmed, if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, groomers or your vet office's vet tech can do it for you. But it needs to be done often, (once a month) so you may want to invest on a good pair of nail clippers.

My best wishes to you! Have a lot of fun!!!

Why do people think you need to be the perfect owner?

i see all these answers of people saying you need the best food(or even raw eww), read books, hire trainers, be ready to pay $10000 for a vet if needed, socialize dog, crate train them or they should just rehome them. theres so many dogs needing homes its not that easy. my town has no dog park, sells nothing but supermarket food, doesnt have trainers, and i dont own a crate, never read a dog book. guess what i live in a hick town full of happy healthy pets! my dog is very well behaved and was trained by me not a professional. i got her at 10 as a birthday present and will be 18 soon. so my question is why does everyone think dogs need to be in "perfect" homes when the alternative for many dogs would be death at the pound?
jen got what i meant with the rehome thing. i think most of you fall into my category "the average pet owner". and yes i agree there are some people on here that just dont get it with dogs. my dog had a seizure what do i do? that worries me when people dont know that means vet. the worst thing that my dog has had is a flea allergy. which i put about $150 into shots monthly flea pills and 2 rounds of steroids. so i consider myself lucky and hope my dog never has something i cant afford. i also
got lucky with the fact that my dog loves kids and other animals. if she was mean to a
toddler thats at my house every once in a while i would be driving a half hour to find a dog trainer. id do whats necessary and that i can which pretty much all of you would im sure. some people just dont have common sense and some people overreact. im done rambling thank you have fun with your doggys

Answer
you don't have to be a perfect pet owner. no one is perfect and incidents happen. you do need to have a good idea of what your doing to own a pet though. i've seen and heard of many people who are first time dog owners and have no idea what they are doing, but with a little advice and some reading up on the internet, they do fine. that does not make them perfect but they are trying and working to better themselves and that's all that matters.
