so i have a dog crate as a rabbit cage, and it seems really small? it is an XL dog crate but it's still pretty small... the dimensions are 48x30x33 inches.

i mean with the litter box in there (a normal cat litter box, average sized) it seems kind of small? is there anything i can do to make the cage bigger? i plan to buy a dog pen and stuff but my room is REALLY small. and i doubt a dog pen will fit in my room -.-... i plan to let my rabbit out whenever i am home and only put him in the cage when im sleeping and at school.

would a dog crate be sufficient for a small rabbit? like a dutch? or even a medium sized rabbit like a mini lop? i have two rabbits in mind. a dutch or a mini lop (the mini lop isnt neutered yet but will be neutered on tuesday and im gonna meet him on monday). i REALLY like the dutch (i've met him twice and he is super sweet and i LOVE him) but i already made plans with the foster mom to meet the lop on monday night and hey who knows, i might like the lop more? but i mean mini lops are kind of big... compared to dutches! so i dont really know.. i dont want to wait too long because everytime i decide on a rabbit i want to adopt the rabbit gets adopted the next day. no joke. this has happened around 5 times. i email the rescue about a rabbit and on petfinder the next day it shows that the rabbit has been adopted. but i didnt know that when i emailed the rescue. every. freaking. time. either that or the rabbit has problems and needs to be placed in an experienced bunny home.

*sigh* but anyway, would a dog crate be okay for a rabbit like a dutch? thanks. btw i am adopting from a rescue

Answer
Provided he gets his daily hop time this would be adequate. Not a bad size for a little guy. I have such a set up for fosters. You could add a shelf too to give him a place to lounge. There are pluses to those crates. They are quite sturdy, have very secure latches and are easy clean, the top can be used to store supplies.

Do you think i can do this?

im getting a rabbit soon and i was thinking of using an old hamster cage i have instead of buying a new cage

Answer
NO. NO. NO. NO. NOOOOOOOO!
my 8 week old rabbit, here she is for size reference (she's laying down next to a red box dvd case, if you've ever rented a red box you will see how small she is) most bunnies are tiny at 8 weeks:

she lives in an XL dog crate, but since it is too big i divided it in half with a divider. my male rabbit is neutered and around 4lbs (he is a holland lop) around a 1 year and 1/2 years old, he lives in an xpen but its bigger than the average xpen and the dimensions are:
6'10" long, by 28" wide with a 40" by 27 and a 1/2" SECOND shelf.
that's pretty big for ONE small rabbit. but to a rabbit that's just about right.

if you dont want to use an xpen or make your own, get a dog crate. but it might be too small for your bunny when it grows up depending on the breed. i found that the dog crate was too small so i upgraded to a much bigger cage which is better - for me and my rabbit
