Aftab S

hi i was thinking of buying a dog and was wondering is it legal to keep a dog in a kennel in my back garden witch i will insulate so he stays warm and but a bed in for it plz answer asap also im gona keep it in a puppy pen wen its a pup indoor but whne he bit older im gona keep out side plz help me
im live in london and proberly gona get a staffy so what do you reckon ?
and what can i do to prevent my dog barking at night except those collars ?

Answer
it's not illegal with the conditions you would provide but I really don't know why people want an outside dog. they're social animals and think of you as their "pack".

first you should take out a book on just staffys. Then you should take out a book about basic puppy and dog training. Reading those will help you alot. Like someone said, staffys need to do alot of running.

What do you put as bedding in your dogs kennels?

Jaym

I am just wondering what you put as bedding in your dogs kennel (crate)? We are currently using a big dog bed but its a pain to wash and its starting to fall apart. So we are looking at other things to use in there if you could give us some sugestions that would be great! Thanks!

Answer
you can buy fleece at walmart in the fabric crafts section for like 5 dollars a yard , u dont have to do any thing to it , dont need to sew it or any thing it dont fray and is very washable , and you can buy several so u have some while washing .
i buy yrd and half for the kennels and wash every two or three days .

kennel bedding?

Q. What can I put down in my dog's kennel?I have tried hay and gravel both did not do.I need a bedding that will keep them warm if they lay on it cause it is winter(they have dog houses but prefer to lay on the ground),something that can make it easier for me to clean their "messes",and something that is safe for dogs.My dogs are 70-90lbs. so with them play fighting all the time they have wore down the grass and everytime it rains the grass gets wet so it turns to mud so then they get dirty in return.

Answer
My Labs use an Igloo dog house and Stall Bedding.

It's easy at clean up, it's for horses to bed in, just big dogs. Smells fresh, brushes off at cleaning.

Best thing I find, it turns to dirt...poo plus wood = dirt. Well, and with weather, rain, sun and furious '...play fighting..' mixing.

Lay the bedding under their house 4"-6" deep, as well as inside for warmth. It's great, real cozy.

Right now it's much cheaper than straw, 1 yard of bedding is only $6 to 7.50 (here).

It's available at Petsmart, (but shop around $) comes in plastic...vacuumed packed, throw a few more bags in the trunk and, and add more all through the yucky season. Then in the next year or two... till it under, plant corn.

Green renewed soil.

Grins n' giggles, j.

Kennel or bed??

me an i

When i first got my puppy (last week) i felt so bad too put him in his kennel to sleep so i put him to sleep with me and he is so good about it. He doesnt cry or nothing. He doesnt even go potty. I dont want him to get used to it so i started to put him in his kennel and he wakes up at least 2 times to go restroom and to play and when he gets tires he doesnt mind going back into the kennel, but when he slept with me he slept the whole night through. Sometimes when he crys in the middle of the night i dont want to let him out because i dont want him to think that eveytime he cries it means ill let him out but then i feel bad and i take him out. What can i do to make him sleep the whole night like before? Is it ok if i just let him cry until he goes back to sleep since in know he just wants to play or sleep with me?
I have thought about leaving the kennel open but i cant because he is not fully potty trained. He doesnt potty inside the kennel or in my bed.

My problem is that when he sleps with me he sleeps the whole night but when he sleeps in the kennel he wakes up like 2-3 times a night, but he doesnt really mind being in there.

Answer
When I got my dog, she slept on the couch with me for two weeks. Until I knew that she was fully potty trained. I never made her sleep in the kennel because I figured that she spent enough time in there when I was gone at work. So it was, we slept on the couch together for a couple weeks. There's more to it than that, I was on night shift and had a cold when I first got her. But she had no problem with going right to sleep and when she had to go out to potty, I knew when she was awake. After a couple weeks when I was back on dayshift and tired of sleeping on the couch, she started sleeping on her bed, right next to my bed. She did wake up a couple times to go out each night. Keep in mind that their bladders are tiny and they are only doing what you trained them to do, letting you know that they have to go. So let her out and make sure she goes and then go right back to sleep. Make sure that there are no toys in your room so that she doesn't think that it's play time. This has worked well for my dog. It took about 4 months or so I think before she was able to start sleeping the whole night through. Just remember that he's a puppy and this is a puppy thing. It will pass and things will get better, I promise!

What else can I do to keep my dog from destroying bedding I put in his kennel?

masta blas

I have an 15 month old lab/pit mix baby and he loves to chew on everything. He has bones, ropes, and other chew toys around at all times. He's torn up 4 dog beds, 5 comforters, and a carpet when he's in his kennel. I'm out of ideas. I've tried the bitter sprays (he licks those like a lollipop), rawhides, bones, everything I can think of that he can chew on besides his bedding. I'm at wit's end and out of money from constantly buying something to put in his kenel. Any suggestions would be highly valued. Thanks

Answer
Most dogs love their kennel just like it is, without any bedding. Just like they prefer tile to carpet since it is cooler. I assume you are using a crate inside. Dogs should not be left unattended outdoors.

The dog is in the crate when you are not there. You cannot control his action when you are not there. Punishment after the fact is not advisable and confuses the dog. All he knows is when Mom/Dad comes home they are mad at me. He doesn't know what he did. Dogs live in the present. If you don't catch him in the act, it is too late to punish him. And NEVER hit the puppy. That is a good way to get them hand shy. A "NO" or "Don't" with a mean voice may be all you need.

The crate should be large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around. You don't need bedding on the floor of a plastic tray. Hopefully you don't have your dogs outdoors in a large kennel with a concrete floor, If so I feel sorry for the dog.

can you keep a mini lop rabbit in a 20 by 30 plastic dog kennel?

best dog kennel bedding on Round Pet nest, pet bed, dog bed, kennel, cat litter #1
best dog kennel bedding image

just wonde

as ive said before i would like to have a minilop rabbit
(i dont have one yet). would there be enough space in a 20 by 30 dog kennel for a mini lop rabbit? also how much does it cost to own a mini lop rabbit or a year (Canadian $) the cage has ventalation windows and im pretty sure it could fit one mini lop rabbit. i would take the rabbit out of the cage atleast once a day to rome around my back yard . i have two dgs (border collies) and the cage used to be a bed for one of them so its pretty big

Answer
20 by 30 in what units? inches? feet? centimeters? That info would help. Rabbits are okay outside but it is much better to keep them indoors. During the warmer months, especially spring and fall, it is fine to let them roam around outside in a supervised, enclosed location. In the very hot summer months and the winter they should be kept indoors as they easily overheat in the summer and can die of heatstroke.

So to get to your questions, if the kennel is in inches, then it will be okay for the rabbit to sleep in, but it will need to have time outside of it's cage, a few hours a day. This should be in a supervised area where all wires are covered or taken away so the rabbit doesn't chew them. Also you want to make sure he won't chew furniture and rugs that you don't want ruined, which is why you should supervise him. Make sure the dogs are not going to go for the rabbit, and that he isn't too scared of them. I have rabbits and a large dog and they get along alright as long as we keep him away when he gets too playful - he doesn't know how easy he could hurt them.

In terms of cost, for one rabbit, here are the supplies you will need for starters:
cage (which you have)
food: Hay - $6/bag probably 1-2 bags per month, Vegetables - assorted leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, etc., Pellets (5lb bag about $8)
treats - stick with dried cranberries! they love them
water/food dishes: about $20
Litter box - $10-15
Litter - use a non-clumping litter, like Yesterday's News (available in Canada) $8 for 13lb bag
Brush, nail clippers, toys $20-30
So you are looking at about $70-90 just for supplies to start up. After that, you will need to continue purchasing litter, food, and treats.

I would budget $40/month on food and litter and that should be plenty for one rabbit.

If you get a baby, you are going to have to make sure you feed him according to his age. Information on what you should feed at different stages can be found here:
http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html

Please remember that it is easy to litter train bunns. They make very good pets but they are NOT low maintenance and require a lot of social interaction to stay happy and healthy. They can live between 8-12 years. Vet costs should also be considered - the biggest fee will be the cost of spaying/neutering. If you are in the GTA or surrounding area you can email me at amylouie07@yahoo.ca and I can suggest some good vets for bunnies. They do not require yearly shots, but should get yearly checkups and you need to familiarize yourself with the signs of illness, since they can get sick very quickly and it can be costly if not caught and taken care of fast.
http://www.rabbit.org has lots of info all about rabbits. If you are in the GTA area and want to adopt a rabbit, which will come fixed and health checked, check out http://www.rabbitrescue.ca
Email me any other questions and I can help you.

What is an easy and nice annual flowering vine to grow?

Nikki S

We recently built a flower bed bordering our very large dog kennel in order to hide the ugly chain link fence surrounding it. I'd like to plant a fast growing, easy and pretty annual flowering vine and need some ideas. I may also plant some perennial vines, but read that it's best to plant some perennial and annual vines the first year as the perennials may take a year or two to establish. Please help!

Answer
The olny one's i can think of are: Sweet pea, Honey suckle,
passion flower,clematis and even Ivy.
