I will be driving from Washington, DC to Chicago with my dog next month. The last time we made this trip it was January and the weather was cool enough that he could wait in the car while at rest stops and restaurants. With our horribly hot summer, I am concerned about leaving him in the car for even just a few minutes while I take a bathroom break. I am driving by myself -- any ideas on how to keep my dog safe?

take a spare key with you and when you go to the bathroom just lock the car and leave it running with the air on...
if you are worried about leaving him unattended in a locked car then just put him in a crate. it actually the safest way for you and the dog to travel in the car anyways...

Is a beagle a good apartment dog?

I am moving into an apartment in 2 months and i really want a puppy and someone told me that a beagle would make a good apartment dog.

NO, they are part of the hound group and have a genetic predisposition to barking. They will get you kicked out of any apt. building and drive your neighbors nuts.
They are bred to bark to show you where the prey animal is or let you know where they are in the tall grass/woods. Plus some can be a tad hyper. they are a great dog for a home or in the country where they can sniff away and bark without consequence. They are small and cute and love people, but they are barkers. A friend almost had to get rid of her beagle and she had a nice house in the Chicago suburbs from the barking.
A schnauzer or rat terrier or poodle or some other non-hound breed would be good, some terriers have too much energy for an apt, check with the breeder and maybe get the delta of the litter who is more laid back if you get a terrier (be sure to kennel crate train -it isn't cruel and they do like the den effect) good luck
