A good traveling dog crate?

A.Y.

I have a big german shepherd and I want to bring her on the car with me. She's four. make sure it's not that expensive.
oh yeah if you have a link please add it.

Answer
Go to a few pet stores and look around to see what they have. There are 2 different types of crates. Metal and heavy duty plastic. Ask a lot of questions too. The sales people will be very happy to assist you in any way they can. I would take your dog with you too. Let her get in some crates to see how she fits in them. You have to make sure it will be big enough for her to fully lay down in.

Dog problems!!!!!!!!?

I've had a dog for a year now. And she still uses the bathroom in the floor we have the pee pads but she won't use them anything we could do to teach her to use them?

Answer
Why are you using pee pads? What a waste of money! Get a dog crate and use that to house train your dog- it's the easiest way. Petco's website has a huge sale on them right now- it's where I got one for my new dog. Have the dog sleep in the crate or be in it when you're not around to watch it- the dog won't eliminate when it's in the crate. Then when you are there to supervise take the dog outside and when he or she does use the bathroom then give them lots of praise and/or a treat. The dog should learn pretty quick. PS- make sure not to yell at your dog for using the bathroom inside unless you catch them doing it- they won't understand why you're yelling at them and will only make them upset.

Where can I find a good dog crate for not so much money?

Robin

From Craigslist? Garage sale?
I need a crate for a 90 lbs. dog.
The pet store has one for 70$ and Im trying to beat that price!
Thanks!

Answer
Sure, you could try Craigslist or garage sales, but if you buy one used, make sure you bleach it before use. Honestly, $70.00 is not a bad price for a new one for a dog that size.

Out of Control Dogs!?

L

So i have a five year old Lab and a three year old Puggle (pug and beagle.) These dogs are the most spoiled things i have ever seen. My mom treats them better than me and and brother sometimes. But this along with he never training them has led to them having run of the house. The puggle poops EVERYWHERE and they are constantly getting out of the fence. In fact today i spent over two hours looking for them. We've tried electric fences and everything, but my mom thinks it's to inhumane. I told her what's inhumane is letting them get run over by a truck, since the highway is near our house. So we've had to spend 3k on a new fence, which didn't work, and about 500 on a bottom barrier, which they usually go around or find a new spot. It's fifteen dollars for a one foot piece, and we have a big yard, and we haven't even done half of it yet.
Ten minutes ago i left my dinner to go wash my hands and came back to my lab eating the salad and the puggle chewing on the steak bone. This isn't the first time, either. They've eaten everything from three dozen school bake sale cupcakes to two trash bags full of Halloween candy. They're favorite is bread, which is why I hardly ever get sandwiches.
I'm so sick of these dogs. Yes I love them, but i can't stand this anymore. No one wants to do anything about it, but I'm SO done.
Can you help us? Is there any advice you can give about to keep dogs inside the fence and from jumping up on the counters and eating everything in sight? Thanks!

Answer
Don't let the dogs outside unsupervised-crate them or put them in a separate room and make it so they are not allowed in the room when there is food and not until the food is put away/cleaned up.

Your family either needs to enroll in obedience class with the dogs(the whole family needs to go and be on the same page) or your family needs to find a private trainer to come to your house and assess the dogs/household and have them teach your family how to correct the dogs/train them/etc.

Also make sure your dogs are getting daily walks/runs/jogs. Make sure they are getting exercise and mental stimulation daily.

Would it be possible to convert a dog kennel into an outdoor rabbit/guinea pig hutch?

I've been looking around for a cheap out door hutch for my guinea pigs during spring/summer, and found a rather large dog crate for sale... with some adjustments, could I turn it into a guinea pig hutch?

Answer
It depends what type of dog crate. I would most definitely not try it is the dog crate was previously used by a dog, as the scent (even if it was washed) will scare the animals.

This type will not work ---> http://blog.timesunion.com/bark/files/2009/06/dog-crate.jpg

But this type should. ---> http://www.extralargedogcrateshop.com/images/DogCrate.jpg

Just make sure there are no big openings or loose wires/cables that a dog wouldn't be affected by but a Guinea Pig would. Good Luck!

Where is the best place to buy a dog crate?

shakeyour@

I've been looking for a dog crate for my beagle/ basset hound but everywhere is so expensive! I bought a mesh one from walmart but she ripped that right up. Even Walmart for a cheap one is min 50 dollars for crappy quality! I keep looking on ebay but they are all too expensive too. If anyone knows of any place to buy a good quality dog crate for less money please let me know. Thanks!

Answer
You could try posting it as a need on freecycle.org...you could post a "want to buy" on craigslist.com, or you could try local rummage sales. Do any of your local radio stations have a program to buy/sell/trade items?

A crate is going to cost in the $50-$100 range for that size. I bought a nice one at Sportsman's Warehouse for my toy dog that was reasonably priced. Tractor Supply used to have the best prices on crates. Check out farm stores/hunting supply stores in your area for crates...they often have lower prices on pet supplies (and they are often much higher quality, as well).

I have a very limited budget and I need something to be able to confine my dog in. For potty training. In Fullerton, Placentia or Brea.

Answer
You're crate training your dog - good for you, this is the best way. You need a crate big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around - sleeping space and maybe an area for his food - but no bigger or they'll just do their business at the other end of the crate. They're not that expensive. One route you could take - if you have the luxury of some wait time - is Freecycle.com. I use it to 'give' away my stuff I want to see go to a good home - and yes, it is free ... you just have to pick it up. Good luck to you and your puppy!

How to confine my dog while I'm gone?

KS

My dog is still in puppy phase and is chewing my house to pieces! Kennels for his size are out of my price range at the moment. Does anyone have suggestions for keeping a dog confined to one room such as the kitchen while I'm at work?

Answer
VariKennel Crates are on sale at PetCo right now, and I think it's free shipping.

Until you get a crate, I would be careful of the kitchen...yummy smells can get dogs in trouble - opening (or chewing) cabinets. Do you have a foyer or small room where you can gate him in? Even a hallway might work.

I also suggest leaving a Kongsicle (Kong toy with velveeta in the small end to block it, then filled with Kibble/Water/Yogurt and frozen.) Dogs NEED to chew, may as well point them in the right direction. A frozen Kong will usually take at least an hour for the dog to get everything out.

Hope that helps!

What are your favorite dog products and what do they cost?

Heres a list of what I need :

-Shampoo
-Treats
-Brush
-Dog Deodorizer
-Food
-Toys

I am writing an essay to my parents and I need costs for a Shih Tzu puppy I hope to get.

Answer
Hartz has a line of combs and brushes (I LOVE the large slicker brush) that are as high a quality as the best ones you can buy but cost around $2.59 each. I recommend a slicker, a rake and a pin brush.

Shampoo: My favorite is Pure Pearl by PurePet. $9 a 12 oz bottle but it dilutes w/ water at 20:1 so a very good buy and very gentle.

Food: Premium brand.. probably $15 for a small bag

Treats: I like to use ANOTHER premium brand of dogfood as cookies.. or cat food. Also itty bitty bits of cut up leftovers make good training treats.

Toys: Kong $9. Stuffies (I get mine at garage sales) plastic soda bottles w/ rings/lids/labels removed.

I've never used a deodorizer.. mostly because my dogs eat high quality food.

For cleaning up: Simple Solution available at Petco and PetSmart $25 for a gallon (put it in a spray bottle to use).

Crate: for a small dog $20-40.

Training classes: $100

Well-puppy care: Vet visits- $250 for first year.

How old are you? Please take into account that the dog will probably live to 12-16 years of age.. where will YOU be in 8 years (college? finding an apartment?) and are your parents willing to be stuck with your dog? My daughter's father was unwilling to keep her then 17 year old cat when she left for college... she had to fly the cat out to me.
