The size crate I'm going to get is:

And the only sizes the kennel pads have are:
19" L X 13" W

You can probably find them cheaper but they are easy to clean, replace, hold up well and you can cut them down to size...

You can always throw a blanket on top of them if you want to use it for the crate in the house, to make it more comfortable...

Ok... it depends on what kind of dog you want, what size you want and can properly care for, and if you want a purebred or not.

If you rent, there's probably going to be a one-time pet deposit.

If you want a purebred, for showing purposes, then kiss your money good-bye. LOL.. It can be verrrrrry addicting taking the dog to show after show, and can cost a lot! ;) The initial cost for a purebred is a lot, however, you won't have to pay it again, and over time the cost for the dog's care would be the same as any other dog.

The cost of feeding a dog, of course, depends on the size of the dog. I have a standard-size dachshund and feed him the highest quality food possible, for his health. (I feed him IAMS). This is, of course, expensive as compared to other dog food, yet in the long run will save me tonssssss of money in not having to take him to the vet. Regular dog food and the cheapest kind add questionable fillers that your dog doesn't need at all. That's why I get IAMS, cuz they do not add any fillers like that. You really need to look at what is in the dog food. Even tho IAMS is the best, I still only pay $10 a month for his food. lol.. that's not much at all, but then again he's a little dog. You'd pay a whopping lot more for a St. Bernard or something like that. ;)

Vet bills.. Initial vet costs for shots, worming, and neutering/spaying, plus an annual check-up. These costs are likely to be a bit different in whatever area you are in, but usually don't add up to very much. My doxie is a purebred, and the shots and worming were paid for by his breeder. All I paid for in the beginning (after paying the $600 for him! lol) was about $20 to have him neutered and the cost of the office visit, which was $10. When he was a bit older he had a rabies shot, and then got his license. I think I paid about $25 total. No office visit cuz here they have certain Saturdays where rabies shot are given by a vet in the parking lot at a local store. That will be an annual cost I think, since they have to be renewed.

Grooming.. Again depends on what kind of dog you get. My doxie costs nothing to groom, except for shampoo and conditioner, and I just pop him in the shower for that. (which he loves!) But there are dogs who need to go to the groomer to keep their hair trimmed (such as a Yorkie, for example.. and Poodles). Groomers can be verrrrrrrrry expensive, but depending on the breed of dog and size, might not be too costly. And that of course, would be every month or every couple of months.

Crate/Carrier/Bedding... You'll need a crate. For my doxie it costs about $35 at Walmart. And if you travel, you'll need a carrier. Bedding can range from a simple soft blanket or bed to specially made dog furniture. Depends on what you like!

Collar/Leash... These aren't very expensive at all.

Misc: Food and water dishes, sweater and/or coat for a smaller dog. We live where it snows, so for my lil doxie who doesn't have tons of hair a coat is a must outside. Kennel, if your dog is going to stay outside during the day or something.

Toys/treats/bones... THIS is where you'll likely end up spending any extra money each month that you have. ahaha.. But remember, dogs can also have fun with inexpensive things to play with too. Of course I buy him stuff each month to play with, to keep him busy too. But one of his most fav things to play with is an empty toilet paper roll. LOL.. Go figure...

Think of it this way... you could spend about as much money on a dog, over the years, as you'd spend sending a kid to college.. ;) However! Dogs actually need very little, it's what we decide they need that can add up... LOL.. But the love, loyalty, devotion and protection that a dog will give to you is FAR worth every penny and more that you'll spend for his care.

Having a dog is in fact, priceless......

Can i stack my dog crates/kennels? Small home.?

They aren't designed to be stacked but they both are big. Both are inside dogs.

The story is that we had our beagle for 2 years and we were fine, but then a 3 month stray (the lab, Yes! She was a stray.) showed up on our yard and we kept her.

One is this one in MEDIUM. for my beagle that is 30 lbs

If i cannot stack them does anyone have any suggestions? I rather work with what i have and not have to purchase stackable kennels.

Keep in mind my house is small. They only go into the kennels to sleep at night, and when we run errands that will take less than 4 hours.

Don't they're too unstable and the top one could fall off. I can only see this working if both were attached to the walls next to them. I.e. both are in a corner. The bottom one is bolted to the floor and both are bolted to the wall behind and to the side.

The floor can be skipped if its an apartment. To bolt them to the wall locate the studs in the walls. Run at least two bolts into both the rear and side wall for each crate. I.e. 8 total or 4 per crate. Each bolt goes into a wall stud. Each bolt has a fender washer inside the crate just under the bolt head. These bolts are 1/4 inch by 2" long minimum.

Pre drill with a 3/8's inch drill bit and use a wrench to screw in the bolts. Don't forget those fender washers. Any hardware store can sell you both items and the wrench as well as a stud finder.

If the rear wall does not have two studs you can use the wall board. Ask at the hardware store how to safely seat a bolt into a wall board. Special bolts are needed but still use the fender washers.

Next week I am getting a small yorkie. She is gonna live in my room, so I have to have a crate or kennel. I have looked online at the stores like petco, petsmart, etc.They are all like $60.00 to $150.00. Walmart has small plastic crates. They cost about $20. The wire ones are more.
Garage sales and thrift stores might have a crate for $5-10.

As your dog is going to stay small, get a crate that will be suitable for her when she is full grown. One for a 10lb dog will work. If you go too big, she will use part of it to potty and it will make house breaking harder.

I am having trouble finding a 30-40 dollar wire mesh dog crate for my new puppy. I mean the dog will only be 7 pounds when full grown so it doesn't need to be giant. I have tried Petco but they only have the one I want online and the shipping is alot. Any suggestions?

Whatever wire crate you get, DO NOT buy a Petmate wire kennel that has been sold in Walmart stores!! Here is a link showing what has happened to puppies left in these crates. http://www.kennelsafety.com/ We had all heard about this several years ago. A friend of mine sold a pup a few years back. The people had the pup for 5 days, before they called her and told her that the pup had been killed by a Petmate wire kennel! Look at the pictures on that link to see how it is constructed. Just make sure that whatever crate that you buy, it has secure hooks and connectors when the crate is put together.

I live in a studio apartment and I currently have a dog crate for him while im gone. He needs more than that. He isn't neutered nor will I ever get him neutered because its not like he can get prego and have puppies, so i want to let him walk aroung and stuff without him chewing on stuff or marking everywhere in the apartment. Kinda like a giant crate for him. German Shepherds cant be confined in a crate for 8 or 9 hours and a time without walking space. I am barely home because of work or because im out exercising him hours at a time at dog parks, regular parks playing fetch, or just sociallizing him at pet stores or walmart. I had him since he was a young puppy and he is well trained and socialized and exercised all day. No need to get him neutered.

How can I prepare for my new puppy?

I'm 13 years old and I'm getting a puppy in 7 weeks time. It is a boxer puppy. We haven't prepared or anything yet because we have over almost 2m to do so but I feel like now is the best time to get ready for him because it will be hectic when i get him. What can I do to prepare? I havent got anything ready at the moment so what should i buy for Him? My house is a bit messy and dirty at the mement so what can I do to clean to puppy proofe my house? I dont want him to die of eating something! And, i have a 12 year old brothr who I REALLY hate and i dont want him to hurt my puppy like he does to our 7 month old kitten! What can I say to Nathan to make him learn that it is a living thing and that he can't hurt our pets? mom tells him off when he hurts the cat but he just keeps doing it anyway and dad doesn't care he just laughs. dont think my family is bad though!

You first want to start by cleaning up the house. Make sure you have a place for his kennel and food and water dish. If there are any electrical cords exposed try to hide them as best as you can. Any foods that are near the floor such as stored box foods should be moved above the counters. Any cleaning products should be out of reach as well as plants. Many plants are toxic to dogs. Second you need to get a large enough kenel for crate training, a cushion for the kennel, dishes, leash, collar, chew toys, sleeking brush, and a highly digestible food. By highly digestible I mean a meat product should be the first ingredient. I would recommend Innova Evo but if your family is on a budget you should try Maximum Nutrition from Walmart. It is cheaper than most pet foods but is a much much better quality. You will also need to make a list of things to accomplish at the vet such as Rabies, Parvo, and Distemper vaccinations, heartworm testing, and spay or neutering. These are just the basics. You may also want to consider getting your dog micro chiped. It's only $17.50 if you get the Home Again brand. You also need to consider a flea, tick, and heartworm preventative. I would recommend Revolution because it's an all in one treatment and cheaper than getting two different treatments. You may want to do some research on the breed and on crate training and obedience training. You will definetly have your work cut out but it's well worth it in the end.

How can I tame my dogs anxiety?

I got my dog (beagle) as a teen while living with my parents. When we would have to leave him alone there,he was fine. However,when I moved out,he's had really bad seperation anxiety. I lived in an apartment for a year-he was so loud all of the time,and kept scratching the door up,I ended up having to take him to my parents during the day. This continued for a year.
Now that I live in a house,and I'm not as concerned as I was about the noise,I've been trying to leave him alone again. He's torn up blinds,eaten hardwood floor,chewed the front door knob,etc (pretty much anything he can get ahold of,he chews up). I've tried a kennel,but he seems to freak out more when he's in there and I feel bad. I have also tried using a Kong as a distraction,but he doesnt even really touch it unless I'm there. At first,I knew it was probably just a new place kind of thing...but I introduced both the apartment and house gradually. I also have made a point not to leave him alone too long initially (1/2 hr,1 or 2 hrs).
Is there anything someone can suggest? I would hate to restrict him to a kennel,but will have to if it continues.

Separation anxiety is really tough to manage, especially when it has been as long-standing as it has been with this little guy.

You can try behavior modification, exercising him with a long, bracing jog in the morning before you leave, and consult an animal behaviorist, and my guess is that you'll need to do all of that, plus put him on some meds. An excellent animal behaviorist who has several articles on the vet school website and who has published several books is Dr.Nicholas Dodman of Tufts Veterinary School. He's world renowned in is field and his books should be in your public library. Definitely look at the articles he has written (many are on the web) and check his books. He has some excellent ideas.



For the short term, leave the TV on for distraction, try to arrange for someone to come over during the middle part of the day to break up the day for him - like a dog walking service, to take him for a good run and give him a treat. One other thing you might do (but consult a behaviorist first) is get a second dog so he is not so alone during the day.

The bottom line, however, is that your dog is very, very anxious and the best thing you can do is relieve his anxiety. Just like people who have anxiety that requires medication, the same holds for dogs. For some dogs, no matter what else you employ, they still need medication to help relieve their stress and anxiety.

We adopted a dog who was anxious and after many unsuccessful attempts to comfort her with affection, attention, support, etc., we ended up seeing an animal behaviorist and after consultation with Dr. Dodman and one of his colleagues, our vet now now prescribes citalopram for her. It has been life-changing. It takes sometimes as long as 6-8 weeks for a full effect, depending on which medication they use, but she is sweet, content, affectionate, and a truly happy, relaxed girl, even when she is left alone.

The medications used for anxiety in a dog are the same medication used for humans and can be obtained at the regular pharmacy for much less than at the vet. Ask your vet for a prescription. Our dog is on citalopram, which is on the Walmart $4 list - it costs $4 month or $10 for a 3 month supply.

Unfortunately, until you get this under control, you will need to keep him crated or perhaps leave him off at your mom's. I would spend a couple of days reading Dr. Dodman's articles and those chapters in his books that deal with anxiety and then have a heart to heart with your vet. When our vet called down to Tufts, the staff there were very helpful in giving him dosage guidance for another of our dogs.
