What is the best small dog for a first time dog owning family?

Well my mom really wants to get a dog and seems very serious. She wants a small dog that will not be to loud and obedient. Their is a 12 year old son and a 15 year old girl in the family.My mom likes chihuahuas but I heard those weren't great to keep with kids and were a bit nippy and loud. What would be the best dog for us considering this is going to be our first time owning a dog?

with the ages of the kids nippy or not, it shouldn't be an issue like it would with toddlers or younger children. these kids should know better about teasing a dog.

go to your local shelter. they will have many purebred and mixed breed small dogs. the workers there can take your info and make what is the best match for what dog will fit into your home permanetly.

as for obediant and barking and biting. that's going to be up to you. these are all things that require training on the owners part. no dog comes trained for these things. they must be taught.

my suggestion is for mom to look into what it takes to own a dog and do it properly. take a look at what vet care expenses will be required of her. food, dailly walks, crate training and socialization and basic obedience training are a must. the better prepared she is before ever setting foot into a shelter the better chance she has of standing out and being picked for that perfect dog.

if the new owner is as prepared as they can be, the better the dog will adjust to it's new home and the easier training for the no barking, no biting and more obediant the dog will be.

How do you stop the dog from peeing on the floor?

I have a small dog that gets taken out to pee all day long and yet she still pees on the floor. For when we are unable to catch her she pees on the puppy pad and the surrounding area. I don't know what to do. Real close to finding a new home for hear. Like I said she indeed gets taken outside.

is she still a puppy? lots of times puppies have a tough time with the house training rules. i've heard from several that puppies don't even realize what's going on till about six months of age.

do you crate your dog? crate training helps a lot to house break a dog.

then again, accidents will happen. all our pups are at least 3 and we still have to get out a mop occasionally. sometimes these things just happen.

what kind of dog is she? has she been spayed? is she an only dog or do you have others?

my dog is a fox terrier, a small to medium sized dog, (about 15 pounds?) and he needs a new dog crate and bed because he out grew his old ones. how much could these cost me at my local pet store?

Have you tried Craigslist.com or Ebay.com? second hand shops might have them..but a small crate can be about $15-20 at walmart about the same for a dog bed too.

How long can you leave a small dog by itself? What do you do to make sure it's satisfied when alone?

What methods do u use to have your small dog OK being left alone? Crate training? toys? recommendations or methods for gradually training them to be OK alone?

If it's a puppy then generally the amount of months it is, is the amount of time it can hold it's waste in. :p
Also get the puppy used to the crate with things it likes inside and associate it with good things, that way it will like the crate. If you have nothing valuable to chew in a certain part of the house you can use a baby gate or use a room. Give the dog a toy it will have to work with to get the treat, it keeps them entertained for ages!
Also make sure you leave them a soft toy, a chew toy and a treat toy at the very least. A dog that's no longer a puppy will be able to last around 7 hours without needing to go but put a training pad down just in case if emergencies.
