Giant breed dog travel crates: Plastic or wire?!? HELP!!!?

Hi! We just got a new minivan to go with our new St. Bernard puppy, and I'm going absolutely NUTS trying to figure out the *BEST* way to keep her safe on the road. Can I please hear from some folks who are owned by giant breed dogs about what you chose to use and why? I've made up my mind that it's either going to be a wire crate or a plastic kennel (as opposed to a barrier, harness, or (horror) nothing), but I'm not sure which one to go with. There seem to be really good reasons to use, and NOT to use, each one. Argh!!! Please help.

Also, if anyone can send me a link that shows where it's possible to get one of those really sturdy wire crates (not the flimsy folding kind--we have an iCrate for her to sleep in, but I'm not about to put one of those in the car), that'd be wonderful, 'cause I can't find 'em. Last, is there some way to "tie a crate down" in the back of a van?

Well from personal experiences, I have mine in a pet taxi's that they use to fly with them on air planes, and I went to walmart one time and bought the wire cage for them, and let me tell you its so open that my dogs didn't feel secure in them and would refuse to sleep in them at bedtime..
SO it may cost a lil more possibly but I think it would be the better of the two choices, plus the wire cage that I had gotten made these weird sounds when ever they'd move in them, it was rather annoying..
I do believe the other pet taxi is the best choice, I wouldn't switch mine, it'd be a waste of my money you know what I mean??? GOOD LUCK and hope this helps with your questions!!

Where to get a GIANT Air Approved Plastic Travel Crate?

We've been looking everywhere online for a GIANT Air Approved Plastic Travel Crate. It needs to be at least 42" HIGH. Also referred to as 700 Series. We can find Wire Crates, but we can't use those, it needs to be plastic. I don't need answers like " Check Google " Because we have. Has anyone ever found one, or do they know a site to get one at?

does any one have an estimate of how much it cost to take your dog on a plane? she weighs about 45 lbs?

You'll need to contact your carrier. She will likely be charged as an extra bag depending on how big the crate is that she will travel in. You are aware that unless she is a service dog she will likely have to travel in the luggage area of the plane? Most airlines no longer permit people to take their dogs in the cabin.

If your dog is used to being in a crate, you should have no problem.
Tips on air travel for dogs:
FREEZE WATER in the small bowl that came with the crate.
It won't spill, and you dog will have drinking water.
DO NOT give tranquilizers!
More canine deaths occur from an overdose, than any other cause.
LOCK the crate any way you can. And mark it 'DO NOT OPEN'
I know of one case that the airline employees thought the dog needed some exercise (the dog had been shipped from Australia to LAX) and the dog ran out on a runway, and was killed.
You need a health certificate from your vet before the airlines will take your pet. And I believe it is only good for 10-14 days.
One of my dogs flew to New York City for Westminster this year. He was given an extra day to acclimate before the show, but he did fine. That was the first time he'd flown.
Your dog should do just fine.

If you tell the Pilot when you are boarding the plane that you have a live animal in the cargo area, it then puts the burden of keeping your animal safe on the airlines. (e.g. You can't stay out on the tarmac for an extended lenght of time).

How should I prepare my dog for air travel?

I'm traveling this Christmas, and decided to bring my mini dachshund with me on the plane instead of putting her in a dreadful kennel for 16 nights. How should I prepare her? she's generally calm and handles long car rides well (18 hours was the longest - with breaks of course). She will be in the cabin with me under the seat. The flight is 5 hours long.

And I've already booked the dogs ticket, so she's aloowed on the plane with everyone else, not with the luggage :o)
I forgot to mention that she' crate trained.
I've heard that people give dogs tranquilizers? Is it necessary? I'm worried to give her something like that.

Most dogs travel on planes quite comfortably and the engine noise and vibration seems to send them right to sleep.

To help ease her, place a shirt or other small item of clothing in the travel crate with her. She will be at your feet and the Sherpa travel crates have mesh sides so she can see and hear you at all times.

Be sure to allow her the chance to potty before going inside the airport and withhold water an hour beforehand so she doesn't have to deal with a full bladder while travelling.

Here are a number of useful tips that will help assure your pet reaches his destination as comfortably and safely as possible.

* Do not feed your pet twelve hours prior to the flight but do allow him to have water. This will help eliminate the possibility of him becoming "air sick" during the flight.
* Provide water for the flight. This can be done by securely attaching a water bottle to the carrier, but sometimes bottles leak or get knocked off. A better solution may be to freeze water in the snap-on cup that came with your carrier and attach it inside of the crate just prior to shipping. This will keep the water cool for a while and keep it from spilling during initial loading.
* Line the bottom of the crate with shredded newspaper to absorb/cover any in-flight accidents.
* Attach your pet's destination address to the outside of the crate, including the name and phone number of the person picking him up, as well as your own name and number for emergency contact.
* Be sure to put an ID name tag on your pet's collar with your home address and phone number in case he becomes lost. If possible, attach a second tag with the name, address and phone number of the person who will be picking him up.
* Whenever possible, try to stay and make sure your dog makes it onto the correct flight. Heightened security may render this no longer possible, but it never hurts to ask.
* Call the person waiting at the other end of the flight to remind him your dog is on the way, the number of the flight, and what time it should be expected to land.

my great dane will be about a year old when i fly and i'm looking for a crate that is suitable for a plane.. any help would be greatly appreciated
i do not drive or else i would :( and i planned on flying with him but unfortunately with his size he has to go on a seperate cargo plane. Was going to take the train so i could be with him but they do not take dogs heavier then 70lbs and i'm going half way across canada

Great danes are huge dogs, I have one myself. They are gentle giants and the sweetest dogs in the world. Since there so big I'm guessing you need a big crate. The airline rules are that your dog needs to be able to stand up turn around, and lay down in the crate comfortably. Make sure the air lines will allow certain crates, some you can't have.

first i want to thank some of you for helping me out with my other air travel question... made me feel a bit better about my baby flying... i just read on the website that she is allowed to have one dog toy in her crate with her... she s too big so she ll be in cargo... she has major seperation anxiety (im not just naming a random disorder she really has it and to a major extent)... this scares me because i know she is just going to freal out and be so scared... of course if i didnt have to bring her i wouldnt... but im moving from CA to PA and theres no other way for us to get there... and i dont want to give her anytihng to calm down because i ve read many things saying it s dangerous during air travel. plus she has a heart mumur.. whats the worst that could happen? if she freaks out to the most whats the worse that will happen? our flight is 7 hours with one lay over. i mean once she sees me all the scare is going to go away and she ll be ok once again right? what toy will calm her?

no toy will. put a piece of clothing that you wore and havent washed when you go to the airport. I work at the airport and no toy will help the unknown sounds sights and smells of the airports. leave the clothing with your scent on it to calm her. I am flying my german shep/coolie who is 60lbs for the first time from hawaii to seattle! I just picked up the kennel today and I am taking to the airport to make sure it okay to fly! Any info or any other kennels for air travel would be great!

The Vari-Kennel is fine. I prefer to zip-tie it together as the screws have been known to loosen and drop off.

One thing you need to realize about a plastic crate - a dog can, if scared enough, push out the door. PLEASE drill a small hole in the lip of the plastic on the top and the bottom by the door posts and ZIP-TIE the door closed when you get to the airport. I say this due to two incidents --- one, a b*tch who I was picking up at the airport was let loose in cargo --- a 7 mile chase after and she'd run the pads off her feet and developed a fear of men (due to the cargo guys chasing and trying to tackle her) and secondly --- the top winning Samoyed in 2001, won the 2000 Nat'l Specialty, and was flying home from Eukanuba when he broke open the door to his crate in the plane, crawled into an area without oxygen and died.

Giving water - I've found it best to freeze water in a plastic container and zip tie it to the door. The dog has access to water for hours but won't get wet.
