Why is my dog suddenly yelping in her crate at night?

For the past couple weeks my 6 month old puppy has decided to start yelping/whining/crying at night when we put her in her crate... She has never done this before and we have had her since she was 2 months old. It literatly sounds like someone is strangling her as she is trying to bark.. she will do this for up to 10 minutes at a time and then finally stop but then at random times in the night she will do it again.. it is so loud that it wakes me up. Her crate is not too big and not too small. Everyone is telling me it sounds like anxiety... Yet she just started this only at night a couple weeks ago... I went and let her out of her crate when she was doing it one night just to see how she would react and it seemed like she just wanted out.. now the past 4-5 nights she has began pooping all over her crate and it is runny.. yet all day Long when she goles outside her poop is normal and solid.. she is really stressing me out considering im already under so much stress being 38 weeks pregnant and it is getting ridiculous! I just want to know what is wrong with my dog.. any help is greatly appreciated! Why is my dog suddenly yelping in her crate at night

Answer
If she is suddenly yelping in the crate now, and "uses the bathroom" in her crate, while it being runny, it could be anxiety, because people with anxiety usually have the same "bathroom problems", or it could be a type of food that's making her stomach hurt, and want to go outside.

Samoyeds are intelligent, gentle, friendly, loyal and affectionate. Sammys have none of the aggressiveness found in other sled dogs. The breed loves people, especially children and makes an outstanding family pet. However Sammys have a reputation for stubbornness that is not fully deserved. They need early socialization and obedience training that must be started when they are young puppies. Training must be carefully and sensitively undertaken by ensuring that the Samoyed understands what is required. All training must be done using food and praise and never through physical enforcement. If you try jerking a Sammy around by his lead and collar then you will create a stubborn dog. Sammyâs have a great sense of humour and often seem to be laughing at you while failing to understand a standard command. Persevere and you will be rewarded. Samoyeds can bark a lot and make pretty good watchdogs but since they like everybody, they will cheerfully welcome burglars. Sammys do fine with novice or first time dog owners

How to keep my dog warm in the garage while I'm out?

dog crates 38 on Wooden Dog Crate Furniture / Wooden Dog Crate Orvis UK
dog crates 38 image

Lynne915

We just got a golden retriever puppy we're still working on potty training and teaching him not to nip at us. While I go out to run errands during the day, I put him in the garage, he has his crate (with the door open) out there with 2 layers of folded blankets on the bottom, 1 rolled blanket going around the sides and the back of the crate, and a blanket going over the crate to keep the heat in. I also have a heating pad I warm up in the microwave and place in his crate. We live in Kansas, today it was 38 degrees, he seemed fine when I got back, wasn't shivering and looked really comfy. Should I also get a small space heater for him. I don't trust him enough to leave him in the house alone yet. He's 4 months old. Thanks!

Answer
I think he's just fine. He's out of any wind and has blankets. If the weather gets even colder, as it can in Kansas, then you could always bring his crate inside and leave him in there. Most people actually do it that way. I'd worry about the safety of a space heater. At 4 months, he's pretty able to regulate his temp, unlike tiny puppies. You could always get another puppy for him to cuddle up with !

What's a good medium sized dog breed for a teenager?

My parents are, finally, letting me get my own dog.

I'd preferably want a fluffy dog. c:

Price doesn't matter, I'm paying for it with my own money.
I'm very well aware of the price of a dog over its lifetime, but thank you.

What good for one person is NOT neccessarily good for another. So research carefully. I would recommend a Keeshound or Swedish Vallhund or American Eskimo, Cocker Spaniel, shetland sheepdog, Standard Schanuzer for an active teenage or Dachshund for a lazier teenager, I stay away from the other herding breeds such as Border Collie, Komondor, and Puli, there incrediable beautiful breeds, but there intelligent nature is a double edge sword, as they can proove to be very stubburn, but require experience owners .

Remember puppies cannot be left alone anymore then 2hours. They need extensive socialisation, attention and obedience trainning to ensure they become well developed adults.

Medium dog breeds 25 to 50 pounds
American Eskimo Dog 6-40lbs
American Water Spaniel 25-45lbs
Border Collie 30-45lbs
If Border Collies are so smart, then why aren't they easy to train?

If you are not a precise sort of trainer (most people aren't), then trying to train an intelligent Border Collie can be a frustrating task. Yes, they can pick up commands on two or three tries but they are also very perceptive and are constantly thinking. If, in teaching your dog to sit, you raise your right hand and say "Sit", the dog may pick that up the first time through. However, if the next time you repeat the command, you raise your arm at a different angle and use a slightly lower tone of voice or a different pace, a Border Collie will often pick up the subtle distinction and think that you are using an entirely new command. Border Collies have a difficult time learning to generalize, basically because it takes a dog that is less "critical" to be able to follow a sloppy command. Training a Border Collie can be like trying to teach a nerdy child that likes to overanalyze everything - it can be frustrating and an exhaustive exercise in patience.

What are the other problems with owning a smart dog?

Intelligence in dogs is a double-edged sword. Yes, Border Collies can learn lots of tricks and can have quite a large vocabulary but they also can learn lots of bad things too. Having a smart dog means waging a continual intellectual war with your dog, trying to outsmart them as they figure out each progressive intellectual step you take. Trying to confine a Border Collie can be an exercise in futility. Just when you put in a gate, they figure out how to get over (under) it. When you put in a door, they figure out how to push it open. You put in a latch and they figure out how to turn doorknobs. Some owners even swear that their Border Collies can pick combination locks - though their paws make it hard to turn the dial. If you do not enjoy engaging in intellectual warfare, especially with a non-human, a less "perceptive" and somewhat "denser" breed may be in order.

Is it ok for a dog that's on steroids for inflamation be restricted from water over night?

Tee

My 87 year old Father is living with us right now and he has a dachshund that is MORBIDLY obese. (working on that and she has lost 8 pounds since coming here 3 months ago) I have told him repeatedly, after seeing him do this, to not allow his dog on the furniture with him as her risk of injuring her back is GREAT. Woke up to an injured dachshund. Back. Steroids. He doesn't listen to anyone.

Steroids are reducing the swelling and she urinates often. My Dad being lazy over the years, she has lost her good habits and replaced them with bad. She ruined his floors, now she is ruining mine. I take her out every 2 hours when home. Over night last night she urinated in 2 places on my hard wood floors and I woke up to walking thru sticky (semi dried) urine covering an 8' by 8' area.

I plan on crating her at night now against my Dad's beliefs as he feels crates are cruel. Too bad.

This 28 pound dachshund that should weigh 18 pounds and did weigh 38 pounds at one point, drains BOTH water bowls ( I have 4 dogs of my own, none of which would eliminate in the house ) while we are sleeping.

Would I harm her if I removed the water overnight?

That is really my only question. But I would accept any suggestions as well as far as getting my Dad to take some responsibility as he told me this morning..... (me) "Dad, Cricket peed all over the floors"....(Dad).."well it couldn't have been Cricket". Geesh!!!! The frustration!!! To top that off, my Dad is incontinent as well and between the two, they are ruining the hard wood, carpet and every rug. My job (although a civil designer by trade) has become the urine clean up beech.

Sorry to vent. Any suggestions? Will this harm her?
add: 'ginbark'..unfortunately our bathroom is carpeted. She will sleep in a crate from now on. Ice cubes are a good idea though! She drinks at least 1.5 quarts of water at night. My dogs sleep.
add: 'dakota dog' : I agree...that's a lot of water!!!! Thanks for answering. I appreciate seeing your answers and glad you answered mine :)
add" 'cookie'...thanks, no td's from me! Your info is spot on as I knew this already. In order to not screw up the steroids, I wrote out a schedule so I wouldn't lose track! Not only is Dad beginning the stages of demetia but at this point I think I am as well..LOL!! Great info!!!!
add : Out of concern for her heavy drinking I had the vet do blood work and it all came back good. No diabetes.

Answer
Edit; Usually I don't give a rats behind whether I TDs or not, but in this case it is extremely important that the questioner recognizes how serious a steroid drug is and how important it is not to blame the dog for something he can't help and also how very important it is to reduce the drug very slowly rather than abruptly. giving a TD to correct information is not helpful, particularly in the case of medications.

First of all, steroids can increase a dogs need to urinate, sometimes without any warning to the dog, so don't blame the dog for this.
Steroids also can cause a weight gain, usually a puffy looking stomach and sometimes a wide-eyed stare.
Steroids also increase thirst and removing water from a dog on steroids is not recommended.
Crating will keep the urine from ruining your house but will not keep a dog on steroids from urinating in the crate.
When the dog is taken off the steroids his housebreaking will return, however it is extremely important that you do not stop the prednisone quickly. The dog will need to be weaned off the medication slowly over a period of at least 4 to 8 days depending upon the dose he is on now and how often the prednisone is given during the day. Hopefully the vet has explained all this as removing prednisone too fast can cause major problems.

How much does it cost to take care of a dog?

dog crates 38 on Service Dog Cape Vest with Patch

My brothers friend's dad found a dog that was left at his work and they cannot find the owner, so my mom said we could maybe keep it. she just wants to know how much the crate will cost and all of the accessories, plus the trips to the vet. please tell me the prices of the things listed below if you know! thx in advance!
Food?
Crate?
Vet trips?
Toys?
Clothes?

Answer
Food: I double checked this on the walmart website and a medium size 8kg bag of of regular food (Dog Chow, Beneful) costs around $20.00. Dogs really only need fed twice a day and if you avoid overfeeding (follow directions from the bag or ask your vet) you shouldn't be over spending on food. Shop around, different stores can have different prices or sales. My large dog probably goes through a large bag at least once a month but she is a puppy (technically doesn't look like it though) so she gets fed more/ Our medium sized dog (cocker spaniel) takes around a month to work through a medium bag if that helps.

Crate: Dog crates can be upwards from $50 (again wal-mart) but its not a necessary thing right away so you can take your time trying to find used ones for cheaper. My dogs don't have crates, instead they each have an old comforter (the spaniel destroyed his last bed when he got mad at us so no more expensiive bedding in our house) and they both like to lay in their corner or wherever the blanket is at that moment. A dog should have something soft (and their's, not your mom's favorite rug) to lie on available most of the time, especially if you don't want them on the couch.

Vet bills: I don't know where you live but I can give you the prices from my clinic, however keep in mind that this one is rural are government subsidized so a city price can be several times as much depending on where you go.

Because its a stray, vaccinations should be started from scratch as you don not know for sure if the dog has ever been vaccinated. The dog will need it's first distemper shot (approx $38) and in a month it will need a booster for this, same price as before. This is necessary or the first shot will be useless, this shot protects against several life threatening illnesses. The next shot is the rabies shot(approx$26) which for obvious reasons is necessary to be given to your dog. Both of these vaccinations will need to be boosted again in a year and then you can move to having them done every other year. At my clinic an examination is included with each vaccination so most people eventually switch to a program wherethey altenate shots every year, that way they don't pay as much in a single shot and their dog gets the health check each year.

In addition to shots you can deworm the dog, which I recommend just in case it has eaten something like a bird or a muskrat. Deworming can cost $10-15 I think, it really depends on the size of your dog. You can also do a topical flea treatment that also deworms so you basically hit two birds with one stone. (similar in pricing as dewormer)

These are just the basic components to keeping up with your dogs health care, I really recommend taking the dog to the vet and asking for "the works" basically. You want to start out right with your dog and getting him healthy with go a long way to making him/her a great pet. While there they can help you with any questions you may have. They can also check to see if the dog has been spayed/neutered, if it hasn't then please please please do, I know its an added cost but it makes for a much nicer pet and reduces their risk of developing cancer (mammary/prostate). I know the initial cost of everything seems like quite a lot but after the first visit its not as bad.

Toys: Most dogs like to be busy so toys can be fun. Its really up to you to find out what your dog likes to play with and go from there but I'll tell you what my dogs like: Lucy(large dog) loves to chew, I got her a kong, which I totally recommend as an awesome toy. Kongs come in different shapes and types of toys but they are virtually indestructible ($5-15) on average it depends what you are getting. Rawhides can be expensive when you think about it, som type sell for like $7 for two but you can get a bag of them for around 10.
Charlie(medium) loves balls, especially the rubber ones with bells inside, they cost about four dollars at superstore. Both dogs love milkbones (they get one at bedtime) again its a choice to spend the money and different stores have different prices, in my experience petvalu sells them at a decent price. the dogs also love empty milk jugs, which cost the price of...milk, they love runing around with them and pushing them across the snow same goes for 2L pop bottles (wouldn't let them chew them though)

Clothes: I would say not necessary unless its a short haired dog like a doberman or a chihuahua and is in contact with cold weather, then its nice to get them a winter coat if they`re spending an extanded amount of time outside. Don`t know the price though...

Extras: licensing, some areas ask for your dog to be licensed. (price will vary too for depending on area I`m sure)Also you will need a collar, and leash for sure. My clinic sells collars and leashes 10-15 dollars each, rogz is a great brand with fun styles and sturdy designs!

Hope this helps!

How much does a crate cost?

meggie Xox

my dog is small only weighs 4-9 pounds and is a morkie (malteese and yorkie)

Answer
It depends on what style and quality of crate you want.

For an already crate trained dog you might get mesh crate.

For travel, you'd need a special soft-sided carrier that fits under the seat on the airplane.

For use in a car, choose a special seat belt instead. They are safer than crates. If you must use a crate in the car, choose a plastic one. They are less likely to injure a dog if they break on impact.

For home, for general use and for crate training (which is what I assume you want), choose between a plastic (airline) crate or a wire crate.

If your dog is shy or barky, go for the plastic--it's more den-like and calming. If your dog is confident and curious, and/or you enjoy seeing him from anywhere in the room, choose a wire crate--it has better ventilation and a better view.

Here's a link to a good, middle quality plastic crate:
http://www.upco.com/vari-kennel-small-top-handle-olive-color
That one is $38.95. Shipping is $5.50.

Here's a link to a good, middle quality wire crate:
http://www.upco.com/general-cage-folding-cage-gold-side-door-only-small
That one is $79. Shipping will actually be a bit less, $4.00.

With this company the cost of shipping goes down the more your order totals. You may find other online stores or catalogs with lower prices, but double check the shipping. That's usually where they get you, especially on crates. Usually UPCO has the best prices in my experience.

You can find similar crates at your local pet store, usually for a lot more. You can find cheaper crates, both in price and quality, at discount stores like Walmart.

Make sure the crate actually fits your dog. I have a crate that claims to be suited for a Great Dane, but it is actually too small for my German Shepherd.

Your dog should be able to stand naturally (head up) without bumping his head. He should be able to turn around easily, and lie flat on his side with his legs extended. It should be no larger than that if you intend to use it for crate training.

Over-sized crates permit an untrained dog to set aside a section of the crate for toileting. A crate that is just big enough to comfortably lie in discourages crate soiling because dogs don't like to soil where they sleep.

Looking into buying a Vari Kennel Dog Crate and they have two options:
Size 1 (S): L 53 x W 41 x H 38 cm (L 20", W 16", H 15")
Size 2 (M): L 71 x W 52 x H 55 cm (L 28", 20.5", H 22")

Is the S to small for a full grown Jack Russell?
Thanks.

Answer
It depends on the size of your dog. I think that the crate is supposed to be big enough for them to stand up in and one and a half times the length of the dog. Good luck!
