How do I get my dog to Germany?

Q. My spouse and I just got stationed in Germany. Now that we are settled and are back on our feet we want to get my dog shipped here. He isn't very big, only 19lbs, and I don't want it to cost me an arm and a leg. I just don't have 900 dollars to ship him. ): Does anyone know of a safe decent priced business who can help me get him here? Thank you!

Answer
you might contact airlines regarding essentials for transporting animals.

if you know of someone who plans to travel to europe you might ask whether they would be willing to take your dog along (you could pay them and make it worth the trouble) certain airlines permit small dogs to be placed in a crate under the seat during flight which is far less traumatic than cargo.

If someone returns a dog to a shelter, can they ever adopt from them again?

One of my friends adopted a dog from her local shelter a couple of months ago. She really is a nice and warm person, but came into some tramatizing luck, so she had to take the dog back.

* The situation she was in, she had no help. I would have helped her but we live in different states, and she lives about 900 miles away from her family. She's not a bad person, so I'm hoping I don't have to hear that part from anyone who feels the need to judge.*

First, she listed her dog in the newspaper. She didn't contact the animal shelter because she was afraid they wouldn't have room for the dog.

The animal shelter called her the next day because they saw the ad and was really upset with her. They told her that they loved her dog and she needed to bring her dog back right away. She said they treated her like she was a bad person for it, even after stating her situation. She wasn't asking any money for the dog, and was sending her bed, leash, collar, crate, and food with her dog. She had a few inquiries, but didn't feel that the dog would be ok with them, so kept waiting.

She took the dog back to the adoption shelter and burst into tears because she really loved her dog and signed over her rights. She probably won't ever adopt another animal.

My question is, if she ever does have the means, will this adoption center ever let her adopt her again (if they still have her by then) ?

Answer
The contract you sign with the shelter says that if there is an issue, the animal RETURNS to the shelter. They don't want it dumped, used as fodder for dog fighting rings, tortured by someone looking to get any 'free' animal, sold to a lab, or any of the other things they're trying to stop in the community.

She made the mistake of not contacting the shelter first. This could be held against her if she ever wants to adopt again, they keep people's names in their database. And yes, they HAVE to assume that the dog was in jeopardy so they would be on edge when talking to her, if she didn't stay calm then that only makes things worse.

If she wants to reverse their opinion of her she needs to phone them, ask to speak with a manager and make an appointment to go down and calmly discuss the situation.

The shelter has a vested interest in the dog. They have the dog on file, have done medical work on it (spaying/neuter/checkups, etc.) and know how it reacts to the shelter workers. They do their best to get these dogs adopted to the right people for the long term life of the dog.

Newf owners - Why does it seem hard to find Newfs as rescues?

I am looking to get a newfoundland in a couple years down the road. Ideally, I would like to rescue a dog rather than get a pup off a breeder, but newfoundlands seem to be scarce whenever I check sites like petfinder. I ask about puppies because I would like to get a dog young to help solidify a strong bond from an early stage. Did you guys have to go to a breeder to find newf pups? Cause they seem scarce in the rescue department.

Answer
Members of the Newfoundland Club of America are usually on top of things where millers are concerned. Newfies require a lot of room (crate wise) so it isn't feasible for them to breed Newfs. You could probably fit 8 Yorkie crates in place of one Newf crate. There are still a few millers out there breeding Newfs, though.

BYB's - there are tons of BYB's breeding Newfs. Since Newfies from a reputable breeder cost around $2000, a BYB can get at least $900 from an uneducated prospective Newf owner.

I will add this - just because you don't see the Newf on Petfinder - it doesn't mean the rescue doesn't have what you are looking for. Some are in the evalutation stage, some require surgery, some just don't get posted because besides rescue and foster, many of these folks work full time and have Newfs of their own. There are also private Newf rescues, as well.

How much does a beagle puppy cost?

I don't mind getting one from an animal shelter.

Answer
It largely depends on the breeder and quality of the puppy as far as it living up to AKC standards. You can also rescue one at a shelter. My son adopted his dog at a shelter for $70.00. As for breeders....The prices are between $200.00 up to $900.00. If you buy from a breeder in another state, you will have to pay for the airplane transport and an airline approved crate.

What is the best, cheapest, most effective way to advertise a pet for sale or for free in NH?

AKC standard poodle, 8 months old, parent clearances, full registration, crate trained, good with kids, 900 or B.O.

Free sweet calico female, one and a half years old, good with dogs and kids, mouser, indoor/outdoor, can't keep due to allergies.

Answer
remember most serial killers/torturers claim they started out by taking "free to good home" pets out of the newspaper...

your best bet is to get allergy shots so you can keep the cat - at that age she doesnt have much hope of finding a home -sadly most people want kittens - and giving her to a farm is not good either - most farm cats have very short lifespans and are not well looked after ...

plan on checking any home interested - if you have a no-kill shelter you can take your cat there or put up posters in the vet office (not as likely to attrack nut cases in vet office as you will from an ad in newspaper).
