Were you ever active against the dog-related issues where you live?

Q. Have you ever reported anyone to the police, have you ever worked in a shelter, etc.

I was a volunteer in the local shelter until a few years ago.

Answer
well i am currently lobbying the city where i live for more dog off leash areas ... i live in downtown vancouver which is more densely populated than manhatten and there are only three off leash areas, and one is for small dogs only ... and then the city went and spent 300 000 dollars to paint bike lanes ... i personally pay the city 50 dollars a year for a dog license and cyclists pay nothing but because it seems "environmentally friendly" the city pays that kind of money for these "lanes" ... which ticks me off ... and i have to say i have nothing against bike lanes ... i am 42, have never driven a car, and have only used a bike or public transit to get around ... but the reality is painting some lines on busy streets is NOT going to get people out of their cars ... google burrard and davie street view and see if you would cycle in that traffic ... another lane they painted, cars just ignore it and constantly i see cyclists almost get hit ... so for me the money spent on bike lanes (15% of vancouver population has bikes compared to almost 30 percent that have licensed dogs and no money is spent on dogs) is more for "environmental" show than anything else ... just like all the "parks" built right before the olympics so tourists would see vancouver as green ... NOT ... every time i suggest a location to the parks board, i get oh a condo is being built there, or a gas station is being built there ... approximately a block from my house one of these fake "olympic" parks was built, and just yesterday i saw the billboard that a huge highrise is to be built in that spot ...

Hiking dogs/separation anxitey!?

Dragongirl

Okay sorry if this is a little long. I feel you guys need to know as much info as possible.
Im 16 years old right now and i live with my 3 friends, one is 17, one is 19, and one is 20. Me and my friends go up to vancouver ever summer for about 2 weeks in July. We hike, swim, etc. hikes sometimes last all day and even we often to all nighters. This year i wont be able to bring my 11 year old Staffie with me, she has come every year for the past 3 years, but her hips are getting very bad and she just doesnt have the stamina and agility to climb the hike trails. She will have to be staying behind. However, Ive had her sence she was four, and when something happens other then her regular rutine, she gets quite upset. She can get out of the solid plastic crates, the wire crates etc. Leaving her with a friend is an option but i will need something that she cant get out of because she will rip open a door to get somewhere. Normaly she comes shopping with me and everything. She is totaly fine in the car. What can i do about the separation anxiety? Do any of you know of a EXCELLENT boarding kennel, who wont mind the anxiety and also, she is a little timid of men when they pick something up, she wouldnt bite, shes backs up and puts fur up and avoids. (she was abused).
Also, this year i will be going with my atm 7 month old heeler male, my 3 six week old heeler puppies, my friends will have there5 year old lab,2 year old sheherd and 4 year old dobie. By next year the heelers should be able to hike and stuff right? No ill effects on joints or anything? Any think i should look out for? Thanks! Any extra tips would be great!!
We also often rent 4 horses and trail ride, and other stuff, for a few days.

Answer
Try your best to find friends, family, co-workers, friends of friends, etc. to watch your dog while you are gone. This will relieve some of her anxiety by being in a home setting. Most top notch well run boarding facilities have dealt with dogs having the same issues. Just make sure you are up-front and honest with them so they know how to accomodate her.

As long as the puppies are fully grown by the time you take your next hiking trip, they should be fine.

What is a good inexpensive doggie boarding place in Portland Or?

kiwi

I am going out of town text week for two nights and i need somewhere i can trust with my 20lb shiba inu. She is very playful and loving. Can anyone recommend one?

Answer
Well if your dog is small and well behaved, check out http://www.pattyspreciouspets.com/id4.html. It's home style boarding at $25/day. Alpha Dog http://www.alphatopdog.com/boarding.htm is $30/night but includes a regular day-care facility. I have no experience with either as I am across the river in Vancouver but these check out well.

dog friendly places in Vancouver or British Columbia in CANADA?

Seattle

My husband and I are planning to take our 2 year old German Shepherd on a driving trip to Canada, what is there to do?

Answer
DogFriendly.com lists accommodations, parks, beaches, restaurants and lots more things you can do together. Dogs seem to be welcome on the ferries in Vancouver and Victoria. There is a guided walking tour of historic Gastown in Vancouver and dogs are welcome at Minter Gardens in Rosedale. A couple hours from Vancouver in Boston Bar there is an Airtram ride you can take together and a pub you can visit where you all can get a drink.

Pet Friendly Canada lists 150 sites of lodging that welcome pets, from hostels and motels and hotels to chalets, villas and resorts.

More links for dog fun in Vancouver can be found on BC Passport, including boarding, off-leash parks, hiking trails and doggie bakeries.

My dog ate some printer paper?

Cameron

My husband and I recently attended an SQL Server 2005 seminar in Vancouver and, rather than boarding him in a kennel, we elected to simply lock our adult Weimaraner in our den with plenty of water and four days worth of dog food.

Unfortunately, we returned last night to discover him completely out of dog food. Most worryingly, it appears that he consumed an entire ream of HP Advanced Glossy Photo Paper.

Could consuming this much printer paper cause our dog any gastroenterological distress?

Answer
i think it would be a good idea to call the vet.

This probably isn't the ideal time to come but I may spend a semester there in few years time as part of my degree and that's the time I would be going. I'd be going to Simon Fraser if anyone has anything to say about the uni, too :)

Answer
'Worst time to come' would actually be a Jan-Mar duration; that's when the coldness of winter turn into long bleak days - the Christmas and New Years buzz worn off and spring/summer not even on the horizon yet. If the Lower Mainland is going to get snow it's usually from Jan-Mar; rarely do we get a white Christmas so you'd be avoiding the 'worst' weather.

During your time here best forecast sadly however his mostly cloudy or rain but the silver lining we still get brilliantly sunny warn autumn and winter days on occasion. You'll get to see the Pacific Rainforest climatic zone at work too, the seasons autumn [and spring] monsoons complete with heavy wind, rain, thunder, lightning... the festive blackouts also due to trees being blown over onto power lines.

It's still shorts and t-shirt weather til end of Sept, then the days start getting a slight chill in october; long pants and light jacket, doesn't start getting to freezing november but that's just overnight [can still be very warm the next day]... constant freezing temps starting in december and from then on into the new year.
(starting in march it gets good again, can do spring skiing in the mountains, and tan at a warm beach - for the hardier types all in the same hour wearing the same pair of shorts lol)

Luckily if you're the hardy westcoast outdoorsy type like so many out here, rain or slight chills doesn't in the slightest way effect the cycling, hiking, walking the seawall - just means fewer families, dog walkers and tourists so less crowded, that's a plus.

Vancouver lights-up per-Christmas and gets real pretty; if it rains badly just go underground to say Pacific Centre Mall, go to a Polar Bear Swim and participate in the insanity or just watch them as I do LOL. Clubs are still open, Stanley Park is still open, if you're into snow sports you really score [skating, skiing and boarding huge out here].

SFU is an awesome University fyi, you never hear about it on the news [so that means the campus is a very safe place to be, but still use city-smarts and exercise personal safety!]... an old girlfriend went there for Psychology, she always had good things to say.
Easily accessable by bus routes also; the bus that goes to SFU makes stops at all major transfer points so you can get to and from from most parts of Vancouver or suburbs easily.

Hope you enjoy it!

Is there anyone in the metro Vancouver area that would look after a friendly pit bull for me?

Cat

he's 2 and friendly. very quiet at times. . a friend of mine needs someone to look after him until the end of the month , thanks.
and 200 bucks :P

Answer
Most people aren't going to look after a stranger's dog, especially a pit bull, especially during the holidays and especially ONLY for $200 (it's $40/night in most dog boarding facilities). You should get your friend to look into Jet Pet Resort. The reviews are terrible but she can probably get her dog there for around $200 until the end of th emonth. If she's willing to entrust it to strangers, she can surely entrust it to a poorly reviewed dog boarding facility.

What is the best way to provide our cat with food and water during and international flight?

I used a hamster water bottle for our flight over, but she was soaking wet when we landed. Food and water containers must attach to the crate. Any ideas?
I dread her having to make this flight! We have had her for 9 yrs. Leaving her in Japan is NOT an option!!

Answer
This link is all about pet travel...
http://www.pettravel.com/
It might have tips as well. Whatever you do, please don't sedate your cat, it can be deadly. How long is your trip? My daughter flew her cat in cabin on a four hour flight without food/water and he did just fine.
UPDATE: No worries, your kitty is going to be fine. I travel a lot and I've seen many small dogs in cabin traveling on an AirCanada flight from Hong Kong to Vancouver to Toronto, and those pets manage just fine. Yes I know I mentioned little dogs, however you can pretty much apply the same theory to cats traveling. You really should contact the airline you're traveling on and follow their pet policy procedure. Especially if it's an international flight because there is a lot of preparation involved along with red-tape prior to boarding your flight. The airline needs to be notified in advance that you're traveling with a pet or else your pet might not be able to board. Wishing your family including your fur-baby a safe and problem free flight. Don't be shy about asking questions and having those questions clarified to your satisfaction with the airline you purchased your ticket from.
