Is there a Kennel Club or Dog Show there in Canada? That would be a good place. Or try the Vets sometimes they know where to find certain good bred dogs. Ask around where the Pet stores are too. It might be possible to find one online. Good luck finding the breed you want. Roy E.

Q. Im only 13 and trying to take the responsibilitie of owning a dog. i even got a job to support him to buy his food and stuff. i got him his shots already but my mom did them at home for me. but i was wondering is registering and licensing your dog the same thing because i really have NOO idea and im doing research right now. I live inedmonton if that helps.

Good question.

The words can be used differently in different regions so I have to point out that I am not from Edmonton so my answer may not apply to you.

When you buy a purebred dog from a breeder who is registered with a Kennel Club, then the breeder's puppies are usually 'registered' - that means they are recorded as being purebred and having a confirmed pedigree with the Kennel Club.

Some people use the term 'papers' to mean the same thing, so a dog with 'papers' is one that is registered with a kennel club and is therefore confirmd as a 'pedigree' dog.

This kind of registration is done once only. There is no penalty if a purebred dog is not registered with a kennel club - it just can't be bred from to produce other 'pedigree' dogs.

The other kind of registration is very different:

When you own a dog you usually have to pay a fee and have them listed with some kind of local council or animal control organisation. That's so they can keep tabs on all the dogs (and their owners) and get some money to help offset all the money they spend dealing with dogs that aren't well looked after. [Well that's the theory anyway, some councils love to take our money but don't do good things with it!]

Some councils call that 'licensing' some call it 'registering' your dog. You can get in trouble if your dog is not 'registered' or 'licensed' with that local organisation.

So registering can be the same a licensing if you're talking about a fee you pay for the right to own a dog in your city/region/province/state.
