My dog doesn't like dog food?

theoneando

I thought if there was a better kind that she would eat, she only likes human food mixed with dog food, we tried to stop feeding her that but she went on strike and stopped eating. when we drop her off at the kennel she doesnt eat anything and when we pick her up she's all vomiting and sleeps alot. we feed her the Kirkland brand from Costco. is there any way to stop this bad habit? or is there some kind of dog food (not wet or dry) that doesn't involve kibble? or wet food? (she hates that)
Harsh.........

Answer
The problem here is that you have a very spoiled dog that knows exactly how to get her own way. She knows that if she refuses her dog food for long enough, you will give in and give her what she wants. You need to break this habit by dealing with her a lot more firmly. Pick a brand of meat-based dog food that you are prepared to buy regularly and stick to it. Put her allocated amount down for her twice a day for twenty minutes and, no matter how much of the food remains, pick the bowl up again after that 20 minutes is over. Between meals offer her no treats, titbits, human food. Sooner or later, however reluctantly, when she realised you are no longer playing her game, she WILL eat. It may take a few days and you will have to stay firm but remember, all dogs have survival instincts and no healthy dog will let itself starve. Believe me, she WILL eat eventually.

It might sound mean but unless you want to be dealing with a very picky dog for the rest of her life, it is what you are going to have to do.

Toughen up and quit letting her take you for a ride. If kibble/wet food is good enough for every other dog out there, it is good enough for yours.

ADD: YES! It is harsh. But you know what? Sometimes you have to be. And what is worse, giving her a slighlty unpleasant time for a couple of days until she knows you're not giving in, or dealing with this horribly pickiness for the rest of her days? It won't kill your dog to eat commerical food nor to not eat for a couple of days while she tries her luck - and sometimes you do have to be cruel to be kind.

ADD 2: Remember everybody in contact with your dog needs to adhere to these rules. One lapse and she knows you will give in and then what? You're back to square one.

I'd also take up the vomiting/sleepiness when she comes back from the kennel with your vet. That sounds worrying.

Kennel Training Dogs...whats your take?

OK- So I have been a stay at home dog mom and housewife setting up our new house lol, so my puppies are now 9 months old and have had me home all day with them. I recently got a job and my husband and I usually work the same hours so they are home 8 hours a day 3 days a week. First, they got into toilet paper and mail, not THAT big of deal, but they did get in trouble...then, they got into their beds and tore them apart...that made me even madder so when I would leave I would put their beds in another room and make sure the house was "puppy proof". Yesterday, I came home and they have now gotten into our brand new eurosuede couch...NOT HAPPY! They are 9 months old now and have never been kennel trained, only "play pin trained" but they are getting too big for that now. They are mini schnauzers and can climb out of the play pin. We bought kennels for them but havent used them at all, they got in trouble yesterday, and i came home today and the couch is torn a little more.

SO- the question is...should I kennel them while we are at work? I feel like its kind of mean to do to them now since they arent used to them at all, but I cant let my couch get anymore ruined. I dont wanna hear "Would YOU like to be in a kennel all day?" Cuz no, I wouldnt but i also dont lick my own @$$ and eat poop lol. If you have better ideas let me know, or if you think kenneling them is the way to go...please say so.

THANK YOU! Sorry this is SO long! :)

Answer
I have been breeding dogs for 25 years and YES, kenneling is the way to go. We start all of our puppies out this way and when we rescue, we do the same to older dogs. Don't feel guilty, it's the way to go. Leave the TV or radio on for them though so they have something to "tune" into...
