Please help me? My dog has seperation anxiety?

Raawrr

My dog has seperation anxiety and I don't know what to do. I made the mistake of being home all the time when he was a puppy and now whenever he's not near me, he'll whine and bark and screech. I locked him up in my room while Everyone went out and when we got home, he'd ripped up the carpet under the door. He's not a big dog. He's a chihuahua Maltese cross. We're trying crating at the moment but the neighbours are complaining because he won't be quiet.

I put some stones in a can and shook them whenever he barked and that's seemed to work. But any other ideas? Please help! Thank you.

Answer
Yeah, not doing home alone training while you had the possibility for it is a mistake, as is leaving a dog alone cold turkey without having done any home alone training first. Some dogs handle it just fine, but many don't. I do wish that there would be as much emphasis on home alone training as there is on housebreaking because it would prevent a lot of separation anxiety in dogs.

Look up home alone training, pick the method where you first leave the dog for 1 second a gazillion times a day, then 5 seconds then 30 seconds etc. never progressing faster than he can take, if he starts getting upset then you've been to fast and need to take a step back. Once you are doing 20 minutes, then you can increase the time intervals, 1 hour, 1 1/2 hours, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours etc. If you have to leave him during the training period, then try to get a dog sitter. If he is extremely anxious, then look into getting a DAP diffuser to plus in a switch near him. It's not a replacement for training, but it can help ease the training.

Other tricks that can be added to the home alone training: Leave the radio on at low volume. Don't make a fuss about leaving or coming home. Once you start doing 15 minutes intervals, then exercise him before you leave, but do more mental exercise than physical exercise, this will tire him out. Leave 20 minutes for him to calm down after the exercise before you start getting ready to leave.

Usually home alone training takes 10-14 days depending on the dog, some are faster, some need a bit longer, but once the problem is already there, then it generally takes longer.

Oh...and go to your neighbours with a batch of home-made cookies and ask for their patience while you train the dog.

A crate is usually only symptom treatment and you need to address the underlying issue: that he is afraid and panics when left alone.

I'm looking for a site where I can find good deals on dog beds/crate mats. Between two puppies and an adult border collie, we need some beds for them, and moneys a bit tight.
I've looked at Foster and Smith, petco and petsmart online, and they don't really have any good 'deals', so if you know of any other sites I could look at, let me know please.
Thank you!

Answer
You might want to try Overstock.com They have beds and mats starting at $10 but the best thing about them is they're shipping is only $2.95 no matter how big of an order you place. http://www.overstock.com/Pet-Supplies/Pet-Beds/323/dept.html

How to potty train a dog quickly and efficiently indoors?

sloth

I am getting a 1-2 year old papilion from an animal shelter and I'd like the dog to learn where to pee **inside**. I think i have the basic idea from the research i've done. Constant repetitive watch and praise as it goes pee?
How long did it take you to potty train ur dog?

I am planning on getting a pee pan thing for dogs at PetsMart this week and have the dog pee there. When the dog pees should i pick it up and rush it over to the pee pan? and do this everytime so he gets the idea?

thank you
also what is kennel training?

Answer
I started out by placing potty pads everywhere in the room. When my dog would use the pad, I would tap on the pad to bring his attention to it, tell him what he did and give him a treat. I would get all excited and that would get him all happy and excited. When he missed the pads and peed on the carpet, I would gently and in a very disappointed voice, tell him that he was a bad boy. He went potty on the floor. I would tap on the floor so he knew what I meant and he did not get a treat. Each time he went on the pad, I would reward and praise the heck out of him. He learned quickly. As he started to use the pads instead of the floor, I would pick up a couple of unused pads and put them back in the container until there was only one pad left. He went straight to it. Then, after he learned, I put the pad where I wanted him to go and showed it to him. It took me one weekend to do this but, I did nothing else that entire weekend. I used Beggin Strips a treats. I broke them up into small pieces so that he didn't get too many in one day.
He's 15 now and always uses his pad. He never misses. He always comes to me barking for a treat after he uses it. Even to this day.
If your dog is a boy, don't get the pee pan. My dog stood in the middle of it like a good boy but, when he lifted his leg, it shot over the edge of the pan. If it's a girl dog that squats, the pee pan works well. My dog stands on the edge of the pad and lifts his leg but, never misses the pad.
In the beginning, it's good to use the more expensive pads because they are treated with doggie pheromones that attract the dog to the pad. Once they get the concept of using a pad, you can buy the cheaper pads without the pheromones.
Never yell at your dog. Just sound disappointed. It really works.

People will argue that it teaches a dog to pee in the house. It doesn't. It teaches them to pee on the pad. As for crate training, a lot of people keep their dogs in crates all night or when they are gone. My dog has never been in a crate and never will.
