I have two dogs, one lakeland terrier and the other a staffy, they have loads of toys and play together, they go our for an hour long walk in the morning and when I go out for a couple of hours they have both been chewing the wall in the same place all the time, we are desparately trying to get the decorating finished but having to keep plastering the wall, any suggestions as to what we can put on it to stop them.

Answer
You can try spraying the spot with something called Bitter Apple Spray, it's a chew deterrent that tastes nasty to doggies. Also, provide more suitable chews for them - rawhide bones, cow hooves (they smell terrible, but the dogs love them...). If all else fails, you may have to crate them when you're gone. Check out craigslist - you could probably get 2 free or discounted crates just by posting an ad.

Good luck!

What suggestions do seasoned dog owners have to offer?

I already know all the basics i need to know for getting my new puppy like making sure it gets its shots and de-wormings, having a crate for him, toys to play with, giving him plenty of water and making sure he eats enough a day, giving him plenty of exercise, etc. But i'm interested in any tips and helpful hints that will help make life a little easier for my pup and me. Anything you may have learned throughout the years.
Thanks (:

Dont take your animal to dog parks

Dont take your animal to places were large numbers of animals have been, example petsmart, petco and other places like this.
(You never knwo if other animals are utd on shots)

Always keep your animal on a leash regardless of where you are b/c ppl can sue you without a leash.

Always carry an extra poop bag with you on walks and a treat for the pup

Freeze teething toys for extra teething relief

Kong are great toys that work the mind of your animal. You can fill these with peanut butter and freeze them for a treat that will keep your dog happy for 45 min- to an hour.

Don't use discount clinics! (They killer one of my dogs due to improper care)

Always make sure that your animal wears their tag on their collor just in case they get off the leash.

Keep good records of the vet and shots that your animal has received! ( Should you ever need to board the animal they will require these!)

Yogart with an animals food helps bacterial infections and digestion.

If your animal has food allergies you will need a non- grain based food with the first ingredent being non- grain... example Beef... chicken,.. rice... ( Normally organic food lines)

Pet Tab vitamins are the BEST vitamins I have found on the market!!!!

Remember that training takes time.( It took 2 years and my dog is still learning to listen to new commands) But don't give up! Your animal loves you and wants to please you.. but sometimes acciedents happen

What could be causing the allergy?

I just took my dog to the vet again because he develops staph infections from a contact allergy. This has been happening off and on for about two years. My vet and I are fresh out of ideas as to what he could be allergic to.

He is up to date on flea prevention and the vet found no fleas. It's heavy winter here, and there isn't a spec of grass to be seen anywhere. We do not use carpet fresh, febreeze, or any such products. He is not crated during the day and so he isn't laying on dirty bedding all day. He has a dog bed, but never uses it. We do have carpeting (plush and berber), but it's new within the last two months, and this has been going on much longer than that.

Any other ideas or suggestions as to what could be causing these allergies? The vet says she hasn't seen a case this bad or frequent before. She says it is most definately a contact allergy, NOT a food allergy.
Our floor cleaner is swiffer wetjet.

And our doggie has been damp a lot lately. Like I said, there's snow everywhere, and he likes to tunnel through it.

Answer
It could be a lot of things. Has your vet recommended an allergy testing series? I think at this point that is where you should probably go. They should take a blood sample and send it to the lab. They will run an allergy series on it and test your dogs blood for all allergens including contact and food allergies. Then when they get the results back your vet will call in to get a series of shots. Then you will bring your dog in on a schedule to get shots. The shots slowly desensitize the dog to the allergens. It is usually saved as a last resort on allergy cases because it can be very expensive (600 dollars+ at our old clinic). That would be my suggestion because one of the allergens they test for is...I know this may be funny but human dander. Just like people can be allergic to dogs, dogs can be allergic to people or other animals. The allergy series lets you know a whole range of things like different trees, molds, foods, and about anything else the dog could be allergic to. I would ask your vet about this option. If it were my dog and I was dealing with her allergies as long as you have I would be willing to pay the money to make her feel better. That is the best option I have for you. Good luck

What size crate/kennel should I get for a husky/german shepherd mix?

T

I'm getting a female 3 month old husky/german shepherd mix pup. I want to get the crate that will fit her adult size. I'm not really sure how big these types of mixes will be. Currently I am thinking of buying a PETCO Home & Travel Premium Kennel and I'm wondering which series should I get? A 500 or 600?

This is the crate I'm thinking of buying: http://www.petco.com/product/10316/PETCO-Home-and-Travel-Premium-Kennel.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch#description-tab
Keeping in mind that the dog is female, how big does this breed typically get?

Answer
As long as you have room for it, I would go with a bigger one. A mix can favor either parent. Think about a crate to fit an Adult shepherd. We have 36'' Pet Porters and they aren't big enough for our grand dog that is 26'' at the shoulder.

That looks like a nice crate to travel. We nest the halves of our crate and throw our stuff in it.

We never had any problems starting a 7 week old lab in a 36'' crate. It may be best to start with something blocking off much of the crate.
